Y500 Ideapad, some keyboard keys stop working

Q: Y500 Ideapad, some keyboard keys stop working

Since a few weeks, the keys I and K sometimes randomly stop working. I first noticed it four weeks ago. At first I only had this problem when entering my password (I have Windows 8.1), I would try to enter my password and then notice that my "I" didn't want to work anymore. Pressing the button for a long time made it work again. When my laptop was fully booted I wouldn't notice any problem with the keys, not even a little. But slowly over time, there was no way I could make my I work when I was entering my password and then I also noticed my K didn't want to work either. It started happening randomly when I was on the internet or writing on Wordpad: my I and K would stop working. First after a bit of pressing on both keys at the same time it started working and so I ignored it, but now sometimes i'm waiting and pressing the buttons for ten minutes long before they work properly again. For 3 minutes they work, only to stop working right afterwards again. ^, *, -, and . stop working too, but those are only minor problems. I can work without punctuation, but I can't work without my K and I. I don't think there's a problem with the keys itself, I assume if it's something with the actual keyboard then my K and I would stop working seperately at different times, and not all together at the same time? They don't feel stiff either, and I also never eat at my laptop so it's definitely not bread crumbs or anything under them if there is. I tried something that I read on the internet for when keys stop working: Shut down laptop, remove cables and battery, press and hold on/off button for 1 minute, place battery inside the laptop and then start the laptop up again. It helped alot of people, but I'm afraid that if anything, trying that only made it worse. Does anyone ever had anything related or can someone try and help me figure out what would cause or more importantly, fix this? If it's really needed, I'm definitely willing to do a factory reset if there's chance that that would fix this problem. But I'm not that smart in computers to know if it would. I'm not a hundred procent sure, but really think that there's nothing wrong with my keyboard itself but that it's a hardware failure. Thanks so much in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

If you have a USB keyboard available can you try that and see if the problem continues ?

I suspect that the USB will work without problems, That the problem you are having is with the keyboard itself. Since the problem is random, but slowly getting worse and centers around the K and L keys could be a good indication of a keyboard defect. Is your system still under warranty ?

Hello Lenovo Community,I currently have a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad. I personally love the processing power of my laptop and have found it to satisfy most of my needs. The problem I seem to be having is with the quality of the keyboard. After about a month after purchase, one of my keys (the F key) seemed to have fallen off. I noticed after examining it that the plastic that holds the keys on simply snapped off (about 5mm of cheap plastic to hold the keys on). I sent it in and have recieved a whole new keyboard within a week. 3 weeks later and my S key has broken again. I do have warranty on it but it is a pain to sendit in EVERY 3 weeks to get a single key fixed. I was wondering if this was simply my bad luck or poor Lenovo keyboard design. I am considering returning my computer or scrapping it to get a new one with better quality. Someone let me know if it's just me that is experience this or if Lenovo has serious issues with their key design.Sincerely,Angry Lenovo Customer.

Hi, the latptop is only about 2.5 months old now... 3 weeks ago randomly the keyboard's keys on the laptop itself stopped working. No clue why, Ive checked drivers, did a reboot, tried safe mode, etc... It's only on the laptop itself. The keys that work are tyhg caps lock num lock and maybe a couple others... Ive never spilled anything on the laptop nor have I ever dropped it. I was in love with this laptop for the price I paid for it at Best Buy until the keyboard stopped working on it... It just randomly happened and I'm not sure why. The keys don't appear to stick or anything like that... (normal keystrokes just nothing happens in result of clicking them) I am using a keyboard plugged into it right now... I really need to get this fixed and I'm very upset at the fact it happened just 2 months after the purchase... So that cancels out my bestbuy 1 month warranty right there. I really can't deal with this much longer considering the fact that I was planning to use this laptop for my work.. If I can't get a simple easy fix I will have to find something new somewhere else... sorry to say. Praying for an easy solution/fix.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

For about 2 - 3 weeks now, some keys on my Lenovo Z50-70 laptop have stopped working. At first my left arrow, right arrow and home button would not work until I would press them multiple times and they would all simultaneously start working. They now don't work at all anymore no matter what I try.  This is now starting to happen with the letter "E" on my keyboard and it frustrates me a lot. Here are some of the things I have done to try and solve:

- connected an external keyboard (which works perfectly fine) - but I cannot use this at places such as university or work.
- attempted to update keyboard drivers and reinstall them (did not work).
- Ran virus scans with avira and malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found 200 PUPs - quarantining these fixed nothing.
- Tried using the keys (arrow keys) in BIOS - they still did not work
- Checked to see if I could update the BIOS - had the latest version.

Any help would be massively appreciated, I really want to get this fixed.

I have a user whose Tab key stopped working, but only on its own. That is to say, Ctrl-Tab, Shift-Tab, and Alt-Tab all still work. After swapping with a known-good keyboard, Ctrl doesn't work, and escape opens the start menu (which would indicate that ctrl is stuck down). After a second keyboard swap, with a keyboard that is known-good, tested, and absoutely pristine, he reports that the F key and Ctrl key sometimes do not work, along with a couple other keys.

No accessibility options are active, and the BIOS on all machines in this office are identical. What could possibly be going on here, and what can I do about it?

Are you receiving any errors in Device Manager?

To get to device manager, do the following:
Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager

Or

Type the following into the run dialog box (Located at: Start->Run)
devmgmt.msc

Let me know if there are any discrepancies.

Hi guys,

I am experiencing an annoying issue with Windows 10 and my Cherry keyboard (Cherry eVolution Stream Multimedia Keyboard G85-23000), especially with the multimedia keys.

Upon a boot / reboot all the multimedia keys are working without issues: mute, volume up/down, etc.
However sometimes it stops working completely (completely random). I have no idea what is causing it or how to solve it.

When they stop working I cannot get them back working at all anymore, other then rebooting my PC. Obviously this is not a solution, because I have to close everything I was working on.

While typing this, I tried to unplug and plug back in the keyboard. Apparently that solves it also. Though this is not a good solution, because the backside of my PC is not easily reached.

Cherry keyboard don't have drivers available, so that's not a solution. Also removing the HID keyboard thing from hardware devices and reinstall / refresh doesn't provide a solution.

Anyone else experiencing this? Or has a solution for this problem? Would be great, because I am very used to using the multimedia keys (especially the volume keys).

I am using the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview version. Version 1511 (build 14257.1000).
Maybe it's an issue with the insider version, or something else. Or my hardware combination... I have no clue...

Thanks in advance.

A:Multimedia keys on keyboard stop working suddenly...

Well I still haven't resolved it. As a matter of fact; it's become worse.
As soon as I hit my volume keys (or a few times) they will get "stuck".

The only solution is a reboot or re-plugging my USB keyboard.

Hello, I purchased Cooler Master's Devastator gaming gear combo off amazon and received it yesterday. Randomly today the ASDF and JKL; keys (oddly enough the keys you were taught to put your fingers on in elementary school) stopped working. However, they sometimes do work, but then stop again... It does not seem to be a keyboard command or anything like that, the device is getting enough power for the backlight to work, this still occurs with the backlight off, I have restarted my PC, tried different Usb drives and deducted that it was just that keyboard(the one I'm using now is fine) and finally, there is nothing inside those keys.
I feel the problem must lie within the software of the keyboard as there looks like there is nothing wrong with it physically.
I have been googling this all day and have fund nothing even close to the problem I am having.
It would be a huge hassle try and get a refund and I was very happy with the product before this problem occurred. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Devastator Keyboard ASDF and JKL; keys randomly stop working

Since the old keyboard works it looks like a hardware fault so I would return it and ask for a new one or a refund.

For the 4th time, the W540 keyboard has about 7 of its keys stop working. The seven keys are usually on the right hand side and in a group, but could be in any row, and within 1 or 2 columns of each other. Pressing the key does nothing, not even the click in click mode. I am convinced this is not a software problem as I have tried all possible software remedies. I am sure it is due to the keyboard or connection itself. A year later on the new keyboard it happened again, but came back after two days. 3rd time was four months later, and I have lost '-', '=', '5', '6', delete, and others. I remapped these. Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hello There is a feature in Lenovo Ideapad 310 which is being annoying to me: the trackpad is deactivated when I press a key in the keyboard. How this can be configured on Xubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and on Asus M2400Ne with a Synaptics device, looks like this is solely a software issue, but I was not able to find where is this configuration on Windows 10. The Windows 10 options in Configurations-> Devices-> Mouse and Touchpad had no effect, even the option to delay the time between I use the keyboard and click was not effective. Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Mouse had no option to change this too. I have searched and found this topic, but I am seriously concerned regarding messing with Windows registries. I do not want to change registries I do not know because I need the capability to boot the computer after this. I tried to find the registries cited on that topic, but could not find them. Is there a option somewhere which I can deactivate this behaviour? All drivers are updated using the System Update program that came installed on the computer. Windows 10 is updated too. Thank you.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Dear Friends, Am using Lenovo ideapad G570 from last 2months in my laptop some keys not working  (N,B,Left,Right,Up Arrow and Space bar) Kindly Suggest me For resolving the issue.

A:My lenovo ideapad G570 some keys are not working

hi vickydy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First make sure this is a hardware concern.
Run an Onscreen Keyboard, by Pressing (Windows key + R) then type in OSK then hit enter
Now on your onscreen Keyboard click on the keys that are not working see if they responding with the Onscreen keyboard.
If the keys responded using the Onscreen Keyboard, Then your Keyboard hardware is bad.
Either you call Technical Support to have them repair the unit in / out of warranty repair OR Ask them where to get the part for it and have the keyboard replaced.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hi Murtuza,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Does this problem occur on external keyboards? If doesn't, then there is a good chance that you would to get a new keyboard. Or try to reseat the keyboard connector or maybe clean it with some cotton buds to see whether that helps.

Or

Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Ease of Access --> Ease of Access Center
Click on "Change how your keyboard works" --> Under Control the mouse with the  Keyboard
Uncheck the check box "Turn ON Mouse Keys" --> Click on OK.

You can also refer to this thread.

Let us know how you get on.
Regards,
Shashi

Certain keys on the ideapad flex 14 quit working unexpectedly.   Keys identified as not working -   z x c, v, m, comma, period, Enter, Shift key on the right side of the keyboard and the Delete key.  Could it be related to Windows upgrade released in October? The keys stopped working shortly after the upgrade.  Thanks for your help

I've only had this laptop for a couple weeks & everything has been fine besides this. Randomly, the E, G, H, (spacebar), -, \, keys just stop working! Will Lenovo fix this problem through drivers? Randomly they will start working again, then just stop working. I use virtual keyboard until they start working again. If I get a USB keyboard, will that be a possible solution? I've never done that with a laptop before. Obviously everything is immaculate and clean on the laptop, only have had it for a short amount of time. So I need some advice on how to deal with this, I'm thinking USB keyboard, any suggestions are welcome!

Alright. I've have this problem in almost every MS Windows operating system I've used (WIN31, WIN95, WIN98SE, WIN2000, WINXP) and I can't take it anymore! It's time to finally find the answer to this. Does anyone know why on one day, Windows shortcut keys (in a regular shortcut) I've set up work, then the next day (or maybe next reboot) do not? (It doesn't happen that often, maybe every 6 - 8 months or so, and it only seems to affect one or maybe two shortcuts at a time, not all of them.)

When I try to reassign a shortcut key to the shortcut that "lost" the shortcut key, it won't stick. For example, I'm trying to put CTRL + ALT + T into where it says "Shortcut key" (I've right-clicked on an existing shortcut to bring up this dialog box.) (Please see attached.) It was there last night and when I hit that key combination last night, the correct program came up and all was hunky dorey. This morning, I hit CTRL + ALT + T and nothing happened! And now it won't let me put that particular key combination back in (though it will let me put in any other combo, e.g., CTRL + ALT + S). And why do you think this happens at all?

I've run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification for IE6 (rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"), but it didn't help. I also have the latest versions of Ad-aware and Sp... Read more

A:Shortcut keys sometimes just stop working

Most likely it being controlled by a third party utility, which overrides the Windows setting.

To fix the problem you can use a third party Hotkey utility which will override it, such as Hotkeyd from PCmag, see: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,6319,00.asp

Or go to www.dowload.com and find anyone you like.

Keyboard and mouse stop working

Hi, I'm having some major problems with my Dell Dimension 8400 which runs on Windows XP.
It all started with some files found and replaced during chkdsk.
My PC was working fine yesterday, but today when I turned it on the problem started.
At first, everything is okay. Then, after the initial Windows page the screen goes black and a gray bar appears at the bottom. At this point, the keyboard and mouse shut off (lights go off) and stop working. Once the gray bar has finished loading (1-2 seconds), windows continues to start as usual. The only problem is when I get to the log in screen (where I have multiple user accounts) I cannot choose one to log on with because the keyboard and mouse do not work. I have tried unplugging them and putting them in the USB slot instead but to no avail. I cannot run safemode or anything because the same login screen comes up.
I tried hitting F12 initially and ran hard drive diagnostics which gave me the alarming result:
"Drive 0: ST3160023AS - FAIL - Return Code 7
Drive 2: No device"
Drive 4...my CD drive...diagnostics not supported
Drive 5...my DVD drive...diagnostics not supported

Any Suggestions? Please help!

Thanks in advance.

A:Keyboard and mouse stop working AND STOP 0X0000007B

Please follow the steps here for the Stop 0x0000007B error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

As you will note, one cause can be a boot sector virus.

Return Code 7 can indicate hard drive failure. Drive 0 is the hard drive.

As for CHKDSK replacing files and causing this problem, it's not likely. Even IF you check both options- fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, it didn't 'cause' the problem, it just made it more evident.

Backup everything you do not want to lose and consider replacing the hard drive.

I have had this windows 8 laptop for half a year now. I didn't have any problems with it until AFTER the 30 day warranty expired. My issue is the right parenthesis key, the underscore key, and the question mark key stop working every now and then and it is getting more and more frequent. I haven't done anything to this laptop at all, It hasn't been dropped, hit, spilled upon or anything. Is there any way I can fix this issue without spending a ridiculous sum of money to get it taken apart?
