Shared Folder - Computer Name Fails

Q: Shared Folder - Computer Name Fails

I have a Belkin +n Wireless router hardlined to a desktop running Windows Vista Business x64. I also have a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium that has a wireless connection 802.11g. I was able to get my XBOX setup to stream from the desktop PC, and I was able to get print sharing setup from the desktop PC.

However, I'm having problems sharing folders from the desktop PC to the laptop. On my laptop I have the following share:

\\HomePC\Public

HomePC is the name of my desktop PC. When I initially setup the shared folder it works great. From the laptop I can connect to the desktop PC public folder no problem. However, after about 1 to 2 hours I try to open the share and it no longer works but, it will still work if I type:

\\192.168.2.2\Public

Why is the ComputerName failing??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Shared Folder - Computer Name Fails

You might need to change your computer name to something else and see.. getting the Ip address means that there is no connection problems.. try that and let me know the outcome.. might make you run a diagnose tool to identify the issue else..

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

I have 2 windows 7 computers and i'm trying to share a folder (that I want password protection on) outside of the homegroup.
Both computers are part of the same workgroup and I have the same user account/password combination on both computers plus I have password protected sharing turned on in the network and sharing centre along with file and printer sharing turned on.

On computer 1 I have right clicked and selected that I want the folder shared. When I navigate via the network on computer 2 to computer 1 the shared folder shows up on computer 2 but double clicking on it to open it gives me an alert saying I don't have permission to access it, no option to type in the user name and password (according to the help files I shouldn't even need to type the password in if both computers have the same username/password anyway but would need it if I'm logged in as a different user). It's just a blanket denial of access.

Hi
We have a network with a server running 2003 and all 63 computers using xp pro.

the 3 office computers need to access a shared folder, containing a frequently used program, on one of these computers. (This folder cannot be stored on the server as the program doesn't work then. It is also easier as only one computer needs the frequent program updates). I have done this by mapping a drive to the folder.

The user of Computer A has left and I changed the username and password on server and computer.

When I tried to connect using Computer B I was prompted for a username and password to access it and everything was fine. But computer C didn't give me this option. I disconnected the drive and tried to remap it.

computer A has the folder, computer B can access the folder and program, computer C can see the computer but not the folder.

All computers were recently upgraded from win 98 with fresh install except Computer C which was just upgraded over the top (Lazy tech guys couldn't be bothered to reformat)

I have called in tech guys but they take 3 days to arrive and usually mess things up

Has anyone any ideas on why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mel

A:Can see computer but not shared folder on network

What are you the System Admin or Network Engineer?

Computer C has to be re-formated with a fresh copy of XP. So that would have to be done if the lazy tech didn't do it right the first time.

Sounds like your remoting into these Computer A, Computer B and Computer C. Can you go out to their location and see what's going on? If you can't get the techs to do since you have to wait 3 days. Computer C needs to be taken care of.

Each PC A, B, C need to be setup in Active Directory so you can administer them correctly.

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."

But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.

What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

A:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,

This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.

Just double check, this must be a shared folder.

Hope this helps!

Hi everyone,
I have a specific problem. There are some shared folder on one server with access for everyone. But one folder is inaccessible from one specific computer (PC1). I have tested it with several users which have access right. Users can reach the folder from any other computer. Also other folders (with same access right) from PC1 are accessible.

Where can be a problem?

I have tried to remove the computer from domain and add it again.
There are no viruses detected.
I have tried to map the foldet to another drive letter. (The share is inaccessible with "\\computer\folder" too.)

Do you have any idea, where can be a problem?

Thank you and have a nice day.

Hello!
English is not my first languaje, i will do my best.

A client has a computer running Windows 10 Pro that shares a folder to be accesible from MS-DOS based machines (i have no control from them). The MS-DOS program asks for user and password and gets connection to the folder.

The Windows 10 machine was not enought fast, and we decide to change it to a better machine (new machine with i3cpu, 16gb Ram, Windows 7 Pro 64bits).
I setup all configuration the same as was in the old computer:
- computer name
- Workgroup
- user and password
- static ip adress and DNS
- folder shared name (this is in a secondary hdd, moved from old computer to the new)...

Computers with Windows 7 and Windows XP in the same network have Access instantly, all works fine,
but the MS-DOS based machines says: "wrong password" (and is not).

Surfing in the web I found that:
http://ss64.com/nt/syntax-ntlm.HTML

I have setup Windows LAN Manager authentication level to Send LM and NTLM Responses, but the result is the same.

I don't know where is the mistake. Has anyone any idea how can i solve that problem?

Every time I reboot the win 7 comp. I get different networking result
1- Xp sees win 7 but can't access win7 but Win 7 sees Xp computers and access files.
2- Xp sees Win 7 and access share files but Win 7 don't even displays XP computers.
And many variations of above

XP computers talk to each other with no problem. I have not changed any network seetings on XP computers. But I have tried everything on the Win 7

I turned off norton and windows 7 firewall.
I turned off windows 7 password requirement
I set win 7 shared folders to EVERYONE
I set I reduced the win 7 encription from 128 bit to 64

I have seen many other post with similar problem and no clear answer yet.

A:Solved: Windows 7 don't display XP but XP displays Win 7 computer and shared folder

SOLVED!.

Blame Norton firewall.

The reason why sometimes Win 7 connected with all the computers and share files and sometimes it didn't was because Norton turned the firewall back ON after a period of time.

When I turned the firewall off permanently. All the XP PC's including a Mac were visible to WIn7. and VISIBLE TO NORTON also. So then in Norton I changed the level of protection for each individual in the firewall mapping and turned the firewall ON again.

So I didn't have to patch the XP PC's nor modify the register.

Thanks to all who helped with ideas

I spent days tinkering with the network setting in vane. But in the process I learn a few things.

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

A:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

Thanks,
NYTCG

A:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos
to C:\ and when it won't! I don't get it. If I'm Owner don't I own it already?

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Anyone have a clue? Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

A:Move Folder Out Of Shared Folder Same Drive Wants To Copy?

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. The post deals with the unexpected copying of files when trying to delete them, but I thought the same (or a similar) principle might apply with respect to moving files/folders. sharename, pop-up authentication window appears instantly.

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

I have a shared folder with many sub folders.

For another folder on the same server, with the same setup, it`s

I have checked the sharing permissions, and all of them are the same
on both shared folders.

All run Win 7 Ultimate.

no difference)
All use Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

And this are the same problem on all computers that's trying to open that folder.

This all happened after a reinstall of Windows.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve allowing the login script to map drives? This pc a hp compaq dc7900 ultra-slim desktop, is using Windows XP SP3. I have read on the microsoft forums that this error could be the result of windows firewall blocking, but this feature is turned off and all exceptions are handled thru group policy.

A:login script fails to map shared drives. System error 53 network path not found.

I think the issue could be that the machine does not have "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed on the Ethernet Card. This can be changed by right clicking on the Ethernet Adapter and making sure there is a tick next to this option. You might have to restart your machine for the login script to work.

I have NT as does the other computer in my office. We have been sharing files for months, and something has happened that is now preventing me from accessing the other computer. Windowns Firewall and AV is turned off, as we use a router. I can go to the other computer and confirm that the folders I need access to are shared and can be edited by others. I return to my computer and when I try to browse to that folder get the following: "\\server\foldername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin... Not enough server storage is available to process this command." Both computers have lots of memory and disk space.

Should be a security tab when you right-click on a folder. You may have to be logged as an administrator or in safe mode to access it. Check that permissions are correctly allowed for the other account.

If you are running homegroup you need to change it. Homegroup is for win 7 machines only and it uses IPv6. For networks with mixed environments workgroup is a better alternative. to test for yourself create a new network connection using workgroup and if it works disable Ipv6 and kill homegroup

I am attempting to go paperless.
I would like to create a shared folder that will allow my
students to drop their assignemnts into it , but not allow
them to open the folder or see/opne the other files, thus allowing them to acces the
other student's files.
I have tried (on the NT server)giving the students:
1. Add: write & execute (WX)
2. Add & Read: read, write & execute (RWX)

I have also tried sharing from a Win98 desktop.

Sometime I can access the folder on the desktop but not via an app (i.e.Word)
What I end up with is either a folder they can't access
or a folder that they can get to everything.

I rememebr setting up a "Drop box" many years ago with
Apple share.
How do I do this with NT 4 or Win 98?

Does anyone know if OE6 will supprt the use of a shared network folder to use as a message store. Ie. So that anyone on our LAN can access the Inbox of a specific account??

If OE6 does not support this feature, what is the workaround? Creating a local IMAP account or maybe using thunderbird instead?

any help would be appreciated

A:LAN shared folder with OE6??

Hi dalani

Creating an Imap account would probably be the best way to go.
I don't have any information on Thunderbirds's capabilities regarding sharing.

I have a desktop and a laptop computer. They are hookup in a home network with my desktop acting as server. Each computer has a shared folder which contains the files that I want to be able to access from either computer. On my desk top I can access my shared folder just fine, but my lap top I get an error message stating shared folder is misspelled. I check and it is spelled correctly. I ran the diagnose that came with the message with no results. Please help and thank you in advance.

I am a local administrator on this domain member Windows 7 Professional computer. When I try to share a folder, I get the message "Your folder can't be shared". The folder is on a local USB-attached drive. That is all the message says; it does not provide
any further details whatsoever. Also, I cannot seem to find a KB article pertaining to this issue. Very frustrating. Any help would be very much appreciated!
TIA,
Sam "flux"

A:Your folder can't be shared.

Hi Sam, you can try enabling file sharing in the network properties:
Network and Sharing Center -> Click the current connection -> Status -> Properties
Make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked.Sean Zhu - MSFT

Hi,

I am trying to fix an issue with our company shared folder at my workplace.

All the computers/laptops have access to a shared folder on the server, but one laptop isn't showing all the folders that are in the shared folder, for example in one folder it is showing 76 folders instead of the 93 that are actually in the folder.

The shared folder also keeps going offline on the laptop. I restarted the laptop and the shared folder was back online again, and I tried to sync the folder, but it then disconnected and went offline within 5 minutes of the reboot.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

A:Shared Folder Issues

It sounds like you have Offline Files enabled, and that your offline files database on the laptop is corrupted. You'll have to re-initialize it. See here:

How to re-initialize the offline files cache and database

This is a common issue and I have had to do this quite a few times with my laptop users.

I'm trying to access ghost.exe which I have copeid to shared folder C:\Ghost on Vista Home Basic, using a network drive mapping DOS boot disk.
The boot disk is obtainable free to download at Universal TCP/IP Network Bootdisk for M$ Networks.
I have correctly configured the IP addresses in the config file on the boot disk, and configured net use G: \\vistab\ghost as the drive to be mapped.
I have shared the c:\ghost folder for Everyone group full control and also added Everyone group to security permissions full control.
Each time I try to access the folder from the dos prompt run from the floppy boot disk I get 'Error 5 - Access Denied'.
I can ping vistab from dos and recieve a reply, and vice versa.
I turned off Windows Firewall and turned off Password Protected folder sharing.
Still can't get it to work.
Has anyone had any experience with this please?

brandendumont, file recovery is a serious and tedious process and can be expensive read about it here and then decide what you want to do.
**stop using the PC that you are trying to recover files from immediately and turn it off until you read the links OK.

I apologize if this is in the wrong area.
So I'm running win xp mode on my win 7 computer and I have a shared folder to pass files between them. The folder's drive letter is S:
Every time I restart my win 7 the S drive disappears and I have to re-share it through command prompt.
Any suggestions? To initially share it in command prompt I used this: subst S: C:\WinXP
I mapped the folder in win xp so that isn't a problem right now, I just need that S drive on win 7 not to disappear when I log off or restart the machine.

Hi all,
I have three pcs, one desktop (Win XP Pro) connected directly to wireless router (Linksys WRT54G), one desktop (Win XP Pro) connected to network via Linksys Wireless "B" USB adapter, and a notebook (Win 2000 Pro) connected to network via Linksys "G" PC card. All pcs have a good internet connection and share my printers and files just fine with the exception below. I also run the Windows XP Pro firewall.
There are two "issues" that I would like to figure out:

1. In order to see the files on any pc I have to disable the windows firewall. Is there a way around this without compromising security?

2. Whenever I try to see a shared folder on the Win 2000 laptop, I am prompted for a password. There is not password assigned to that pc. It's in the same workgroup, folder is shared with full access. What am I missing?

Thanks for any help.

Gary
