How to setup Avast Internet Security 2016 for Maximum Protection (Guide)

Q: How to setup Avast Internet Security 2016 for Maximum Protection (Guide)

Avast Internet Security 2016 offers a great level of protection on its default settings. However, there are a few settings which you can change to increase even more the protection offered by Avast Internet Security 2016.
This guide should also cover Avast Premium 2016, and some settings should apply to Avast Free 2016.

1. Enable Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP's) detection
A PUP (potentially unwanted program) is a program that may be unwanted, such as spyware, despite the possibility that users consented to download it. This usually includes: toolbars, browser hijackers or adware (ad-supported software)

Open Avast, then click on Settings (gear icon)

In the "General" tab, select "Scan for potentially unwanted software (PUPs)".

2. Enable Avast Hardened Mode
Hardened Mode is designed to make protection tougher without interfering with the computer usage much.
Avast by default checks suspicious files with DeepScreen within virtual environment to see how they behave. But if you use Hardened Mode, it starts to behave a bit differently.

Hardened Mode: Moderate
Under normal conditions, if Avast decides that some file is too suspicious by various characteristics, it then throws it into the DeepScren for further scanning. But if Moderate Hardened Mode is enabled, Avast automatically blocks files that are detected as suspicious by preliminary analysis.
In most cases DeepScreen checks the file and if it doesn't find obvious malicious problems with it, those files are started automatically after analysis. But Hardened Mode (Moderate) blocks it right there.

Hardened Mode Agressive
This mode behaves a bit differently. It actually relies on analysis on a very small scale and mostly relies on a huge whitelist database located in Avast Cloud. If file is located within the cloud and flagged as safe, it will allow to run it. If it's not found or marked as bad, it will block it. So, at least based on my experience, Aggressive Mode is actually much more secure and also a lot less intrusive. Only time that it will cause problems is with some very rare old software or very very new software that isn't used by thousands of users. Usually some very specialized programs used by only few users.
Moderate mode often feels a bit too paranoid (despite its name) because it often blocks safe programs just because they exhibit local suspicious file characteristics that are basically ignored by the Aggressive mode.

To enable Avast Hardened Mode:
Open Avast, click on Settings (gear icon), then in the General tab, check "Enable Hardened Mode".
You may use Moderate or Aggressive mode. I do recommend the Aggressive mode.

3. Enable "Warn when downloading files with poor reputation"
Avast offers a settings which warn you when you are downloading a file with a low reputation with the Avast network.

To enable "Warn when downloading files with poor reputation":

Open Avast, click on Settings (Gear Icon), then on Active Protection tab and click on Customize in the Web Shield field.

In the Web Shield settings, please check Warn when downloading files with poor reputation.

These are the recommended settings for most users. In the next part we will cover some settings which may increase the level of protection, however they may also produce false positive detection.
The below settings are recommend for experienced users only. Not recommended for most Avast users.

Spoiler: These settings are recommend for experienced users only. Not recommended for most Avast users
Increase the Sensitivity level of Avast.

Open Avast, click on Settings, then on Active Protection and click on the "Customize" link to the Files System Shield field.

In the Files System Shield settings, click on Sensitivity, then in the "Heuristics" and "Suspicious Behavior (HIPS)" sections, set the level to High.

Next, we will increase the Sensitivity level for Avast's "Web Shield".
1. Open Avast, click on Settings, then on Active Protection and click on the "Customize" link to the Web Shield field.
2. In the Web Shield settings, click on Sensitivity, then in the "Heuristics" section, set the level to High.

If at any point you wish to revert to the default Avast Internet Security 2016 settings, open the Avast "Settings" menu by clicking on the gear icon in the top right corner.
In the General tab, click on "Troubleshooting" option, then in the "Restore factory defaults" field, click on the "Reset now" button.

That's it. If you know other settings which will increase the level of security offered by Avast Internet Security 2016, please post them in this thread.

This guide should also cover Kaspersky Total Security 2016, and some settings should apply to Kaspersky Antivirus 2016.

1. Enable "System Changes Control" to block changes to operating system and web browser settings
If the web browser start page or the default search engine has changed without your intention, it might be activity of an adware or malware. In some cases, such changes are caused by add-ons that come with software you install (for example, with media players or instant messengers). Sometimes system settings are affected by malicious scripts that could have reached your computer through insecure websites.

A:Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 vs Avast! Internet Security 2016

If you have the money to purchase it, I would strongly recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2016.
Overall, Kaspersky might not be as user friendly (many alerts when properly configured) and as light as Avast (Kaspersky always was a little hoggy, although that has been mostly fixed in the recent versions), however the security components of KIS are much more mature and powerful (when properly configured) than those of AIS.

In conclusions, if you have capable computer hardware and you don't mind a little bit of configuration and quite a few alerts, I would definitely recommend KIS.
If you believe that KIS might be too heavy for your system, and that you do not really visit suspicious sites and download suspicious applications, then I'd recommend AIS.

I have recently bought a new laptop and I installed norton security standard version no backup
And yesterday I got a new license from the avast giveaway that was posted here on MT
I like how little impact has norton on my system but I don't know if it is good enough for detecting PUP and PUA, and this system might not be always connected to the internet (around 80% of the time),
so do you guys think that avast is a better solution or should I keep norton

A:Avast internet security 2016 vs Norton security standard

I vote for Norton.
If you change SONAR to agressive you will have better protection against zero-day threats even offline.( despite Sonar requires on-line connection for better heuristic real-time protection. )
Norton is lighter, Its improved performace and, I think if you are 80%of the time not connectec to internet, norton gives you a very good layer of protection

Ransomware Protection ? is a new module included in all Bitdefender 2016 classic line products (Antivirus Plus, Internet Security and Total Security) and it is designed to protect certain folders from ransomware malware that infects client?s PC?s, encrypts personal files, making them unusable and demand money in exchange.

http://www.Bitdefender.com/images/1DE/1aaaaa/1.png

Ransomware malware - is a malicious software that attacks vulnerable systems by locking them, and asks for money to let the user take back the control of his system. The malicious software displays false messages to panic the user, urging him to proceed with the asked payment.

Ransomware can have one of the following behaviors:

ō Encrypts sensitive and personal files without giving the possibility of decryption until a ransom is paid by the victim.

ō Locks the computer?s screen and displays a message asking for money. In this case, no file is encrypted, only the user is forced to proceed with the payment.

ō Blocks applications from running.

Using the latest technology, Bitdefender Ransomware Protection ensures system integrity by protecting critical system areas against damages without impacting the system.

Boot time Protection
Given the fact that many malware applications are set to run at system start-up, Boot time protection scans all critical system areas before all files are being loaded, with zero impact on the system. At the same time, protection is provided from certain attacks tha... Read more

A:F-Secure Internet Security 2016 vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

If a security soft ranks amongst the top performing AVs, it won't matter much if it does function correctly or causes problems on your specific system.

From lab test results F-Secure has an edge over Panda during testing the past few years in terms of detection (although higher false positives).

From users, it seems more prefer Panda - which is one of Neil Rubenking's (PCMag) favs (that don't mean much - but that is just my opinion).

I'd say, in terms of overall protection, Panda has a slight edge; it might protect your system in a few instances that F-Secure will not.

AIS has SecureDNS.

A user in Avast forum mentioned "It is programmed so that it is used, and not your isp or other dns services".

I think during install this should be mentioned that SecureDNS enabled will use Avast DNS instead of ISP DNS or system DNS.

SecureDNS enabled gives randomly "check if the site name entered is correct".

SecureDNS disabled gives no probs.

And this is confirmed. I am checking for past few days.

Anyone with the prob?
And does SecureDNS has malware/phishing protection?

A:Avast SecureDNS in avast Internet Security?

SecureDNS is design to provide protection against hijacking webpage which translates the web address to IP to determine if its in blacklist + in my view the malware/phishing protection may already incorporate in Web shield so there's no problem if both turn on.

A:[Behavior Blocker] Norton Security vs Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

As for Kaspersky, I have not used it since about 2009 when it was Kaspersky PURE so I cannot really comment. But as for Norton, it blocks unknown files it doesn't have a HIPS as such but any program being stupid of trying to access websites and files they shouldn't get blocked by SONAR their zero-day and zero-hour malware component.

Earlier I was using Bitdefender and thought Bitdefender was the number 1 and Kaspersky is the number 2. But After coming to this forum I realized that the reality is completely different! Some products have trouble working with Windows 10, some have trouble protecting 64bit systems. I did some digging and settled with two products. Kaspersky and ESET. Im using a Windows 10 64 bit system. What product might be the best for such a setup?

A:ESET Smart Security 9 vs Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 for Win 10 64bit

For purely protection basis you may go to ESET SS 9 as you can tweak the HIPS for protection and their Sandbox (Banking) + so far the architecture (x64) isn't affected from performance.

KIS 2016 is a promising suite, however until now limited components working from prevention due to Windows 10 environment which the developers make a note to fix those issues; but overall a balance concept where you can tweak more from numerous components.

Somehow the system impact tends to be consistent as light for ESET than Kaspersky.

Still brace yourself to see those possible unique characteristics.

Hi,

Well I want to know is Comodo Internet Security 8 or Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 better?

A:Comodo Internet Security 8 VS Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

Despite one being paid only and the other free solution, if you can have even trial versions of Kaspersky, then comparison can be done as follow:

KIS has a very good selection of under the hood protection even on default settings, so it works out of the box. Comodo on the other hand has good tools as well but requires manual configuration on settings to even come close to Kaspersky.

In terms of AV, KIS is known for its signatures and removal processes. Comodo on the other hand has always focused on Prevention over Detection.

User friendliness, both are fine at first look but when you start to dig into the options, both can be daunting.

So if you have the option to use KIS, then I recommend KIS.

If you do not and you are just an average user/casual user, perhaps another free solution will do you better.

Edit: forgot to mention: Kaspersky does have a small boot time impact compared to Comodo but it is basically negligible.

Emsisoft Internet Security 11 VS Norton Internet Security 2016

A:Emsisoft Internet Security 11 VS Norton Internet Security 2016

Hello, personally I have a dislike for Emsisoft simply because of the size of the database updates and other reasons, my opinion should not come into this. I like Nortons' Virus-Free guarantee, if your computer is infected you will be compensated, and they have good detection. Emsisoft has quite good detection also, this is difficult...

So here are some security tips you should try before you go out and surf the net, carefree:

Hi,

I am infected with something calling itself XP Internet Security 2012, and am attempting to follow the self-help guide. However I can't get past the first step! I have downloaded the registry fix file, on a clean machine, to a CD-R, but when I try to open it on the infected machine, the bugger is blocking it, and the CD appears to have no files on it at all. Help!

A:XP Internet Security 2011 Self Help Guide - Need help!

Try making the file again on the other PC and confirm its on it before you leave,There is also this methodIf you do not have any removable media or another clean computer that you can download the FixNCR.reg file onto, you can try and download it to your infected computer using another method. On the infected computer, right click on the Internet Explorer's icon, or any other browser's icon, and select Run As or Run as Administrator. If you are using Windows XP, you will be prompted to select a user and enter its password. It is suggested that you attempt to login as the Administrator user. For Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you will be prompted to enter your Administrator account password.Once you enter the password, your browser will start and you can download the above FixNCR.reg file. When saving it, make sure you save it to a folder that can be accessed by your normal account. Remember, that you will be launching the browser as another user, so if you save it to a My Documents folder, it will not be your normal My Documents folder that it is downloaded into. Instead it will be the My Documents folder that belongs to the user you ran the browser as. Once the download has finished, close your browser and find the FixNCR.reg file that you downloaded. Now double-click on it and allow the data to be merged. You should now be able to run your normal executable programs and can proceed to the next step.

Ok. I am new to this forum. But not new to computers. I can remember a few years ago. Not even that many ago. When it was safe to surf the net. I new that using firewalls, Virus softeware, and other saftey software was very inportant. But yesterday I got board. Let me start by saying I am posting this with my Lap Top that Has XP on it. The machine I used to do this test is my tower with 98se on it. I turned off all the security software. Well I thought I did all of it was off except the viruses software. I surfed the net like someone new to the computer world and the internet. I went to a lot of different sites. I also went to a lot of the sites in SpyWare Blaster as unsafe site. And unsafe they are. I only hit about 30 different sites. And as many new users would do I said yes to the different things that would pop up and say you needed to down load this software to view there site. That is when AVG would say Viruses ditected. But sence it was a test I ignored it. And keep going on. This happened a lot. SO it was detecting the problems. But as some one with out this protection would not detect these problems. They would have no Idea what was going on. But I also noticed that my machine ... Read more
