Windows 7 Freeze and Possible Time Server Problems

Q: Windows 7 Freeze and Possible Time Server Problems

Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me resolve a problem that i have been having since day 1 with windows 7.

The problem is that my PC will occasionally freeze requiring a hard reset.

The PC itself is solely used as a HTPC with Media Center running on it 24/7. Its running Win7 64 bit. There doesn't seem to be any common tasks that it will freeze up on, although a possible slight propensity for it to happen at 100% CPU use (encoding).

Its not heat on the CPU (it has also happened when at idle), all my drivers are up to date, I thought it might be Catalyst Control Center but it froze without this too, bios was updated the other week and yet i had three freezes in a day today.

The main clue (I think) is that there is always some problem with the time when it reboots after the freeze. A lot of the time it will wake up and think that its 2000, exactly 10 years to the second has been lost from the system clock. obviously this affects the scheduling of tasks, scheduled recordings and so on. Until recently there's been very little detail in the event log, often i have seen the last 1/2 hour to 5 hours missing completely and showing the wrong date when it resumes.

The last three freezes it has (seemingly) been able to retain all the even log and i have noticed that there is a event relating to synchronising the system time shortly before the freeze. When it has rebooted on each occasion, if i go through to changing the internet time settings, it tells me that the time server has stopped. It will restart if I attempt to sync and picks up the right time but this must be more than coincidental?

i am just about out of ideas. i thought that the bios update last week seemed to have fixed everything but now i feel back to sqaure 1.

i would be very grateful for any help, this is the last thing that is really stopping me from enjoying my HTPC

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 Freeze and Possible Time Server Problems

Have exactly the same problem but at least I think I've found out why. The culprit appears to be searchindexer.exe.
My freeze is fairly random except that it will always occur when the tv listing update runs in the early am.
My setup:
- Windows 7 home premium
- Originally an ATI 4300 video card - now it's a Nvidia 430
- Hauppage PVR
- Asus N4L motherboard with 2M memory
- Home Server for pictures, music, etc.
I've gone thru a heck of lot of testing. Here's what I did:
1. Replaced the ATI with Nvidia. I too was seeing a bunch of errors and suspected the flood crippled the system. Didn't fix anything. Nothing in any of the system or media center logs; system just froze and required a reboot.
2. Replaced the hard drive and cable. Denada.
3. Replaced the memory. Denada,
4. Replaced the hard drive. Denada.
5. Double checked and reloaded all the latest drivers. Denada
6. Killed all the services that I could reasonably kill. Denada
7. Cleaned out all of the extraneous autoruns. Denada
8. Rebuilt the entire Windows 7 media center. Turned of aero and only loaded Total Media Player. Set up Home Server. Went thru the autorun and service cleanup. Downloaded all new drivers. Turned on monitors for temperature of CPUs and GPU - all remained fine. Ran memory test for two days with no errors. Denada and still not a single event log error posted - the system just stopped.
9, After 6 months of frustration, 3rd party and system software tuning, and hardware replacement I was pretty convinced that the problem was in Windwos 7 or Media Center. Finally set up sysproc internals and process explorer let them run all the time displaying results on a second monitor. That way when the system totally locked up I could see what was running at the time. Here's what I found when the system hung:
- ehshell running at 51% (media center key module)
- searchindexer - 37%
- sidebar, wmplayer, wudfhost, and svchosts running but all less than 10%
Searchindexer was off the chart with updates to WHS and directory. Ehshell was obviously not a problem so I killed searchindexer. For the first time in 6 months my system has not frozen at night! Continued running next day and had another freeze running TV. There was dwm.exe running even though I had turned of aero (selected classic windows as a theme). Killed dwm and have run a day without problems.

Please anyone else - if you are having the problem try killing searchindexer and see if it fixes your problem.
Please Microsoft - step up and address the problem rather than pointing at 3rd parties, memory, drivers, etc. There's a real problem here that you need to fix.

I was trying to sync Windows time with Internet timer Server. I was following this tutorial : Time Synchronization - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

For the first option, I couldn't couldn't find the necessary options.

For the second option, I've already set my settings right.
But, still my windows 8 time was showing wrong.

I had to change my BIOS time to make the necessary change to Windows time.

So, what happened here. Can windows 8 override BIOS time? or How can I set Windows time to Internet time server even if my BIOS time is wrong.

Thank you for your help.

A:Synchronize windows time with internet time server.

Yes the OS can override the BIOS time. It uses UTC to update. Check your time zone in Date & Time tab, to see if that is why your time is off.

I just wondered, why does Windows XP freeze here and there? I would think, from what I understand of preemptive multitaking, that worse case, Windows should just slow down, but now freeze like I see it do. It is like it gets taken over by one program or stuck on one task?

P.S. I am not jsut referring to this computer, I have seen this on about every Windows XP machine I have used in the past few years.

Despite the name, this is NOT belong in the Windows Server section.

I have a computer that I use as a server machine for my webpage(s). Lately it's been freezing up after about an hour or so of running. I've done a scan in MalwareBytes, and disabled all start-up programs in msconfig. I've noticed when it freezes, it's only using around 400/1982 MB RAM, and the processor is only at around 34%. I haven't done any Windows updates, and I haven't installed Service pack 3 because it screwed up my install last time and went on an infinite boot loop. I'm stumpted as to what is causing this. Any ideas?

Ever since I updated my computer from windows 8 to 8.1 (a long time ago), everyday at around 7:50-8:00pm, I get a prompt from my computer to activate windows - I follow the steps and nothing works. I never put much thought into it because I could simply exit out of it an continue whatever I was doing.

Problem is, after exiting the prompt, my computer freezes completely, doesn't matter what I was doing, how long it has been on for, what I had open, everything just stops. I;m usually browsing the web on Chrome and it just freezes, videos stop, tabs crash, etc.

It's pretty frustrating as it takes a good 10-15 minutes for everything to get back up again. It happens everyday, without fail, at around 8pm. Any ideas how I could fix this?

Thanks

A:Windows 8.1 - Activation prompt then freeze same time everyday?

Did this computer originally come pre-installed with Windows 8? If that is the case the key is embedded in firmware and there should not be a problem with activation as 8.1 uses the 8 key.

Download Firmware Tables View. Run the program and look under the MSDM table. Is your windows 8 key shown. Is it the same when running the below keyfinder?

https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus/releases

If the keys are the same you can reinstall Windows 8.1 using the Media Creation Tool. It will let you create a DVD or USB flash drive. Also an iso which can be used with Rufus which is the preferable method. Select GPT partition scheme in the dropdown box. Leave all boxes as checked. Press Start.

Doing a clean install after backing up all your data and any licenses for purchases software like Office would give you a clean slate without the baggage of Windows 8. You may need to download drivers from your computer's support site before hand. One would be your wifi driver and possibly Ethernet also.

RPC server and Printer Spooler problems
Hi i'm running windows xp professional edition.

i had to wipe my system after a nightmare virus infected my machine. my friend then reloaded xp pro from scratch. its all been working fine but i can't reload my printer onto the machine.

first i got error messages saying 'printer spooler service not running please restart computer to start service'. so i had a look in the services area and restarted the spooler service manually. i then tried to install again and got the same message. so i looked up solutions on the net that included clearing all the printer drivers from the computer and then restarting the computer with the services i needed (RPC server and Printer Spooler) set to automatic. i started the installation again and got the same message.

this time i went down the corrupted files route and replaced the spoolss.dll, spoolsv.exe, winspool.drv and winspool.exe files in the win32 system with fresh new ones off the installation disk. (I can't access winspool.drv as its part of winlogin.)ran the pirinter installation again and this time i got an 'RPC server unavailable' error. i again checked the RPC server and it was running in the services window. also all of its dependents are working fine so it must therefore be running. I tried again this time it said 'Remote Procedure Call unavailable'. By the way the DCOM server is already working.

Every now and then i get a script error when restarting ... Read more

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it. These two issues seem to be related since right after I reboot, the Authentication tab works normally (as well as the time sync like I mentioned above), and they both seem to stop working at the same time. I have no idea if it happens after something I run or if it's just after a certain amount of time or what. Any ideas?

You had a BSOD yesterday, it was due to your hibernation file being too small.
To fix this, open an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt and type this code:

Code:
PowerCfg.exe /HIBERNATE /SIZE 100
and then press Enter.
If you don't get an error message, then this should fix the problem.

Hello, I've been having a problem since I installed windows 7;

Computer screen will freeze up, mouse and keyboard will not respond, waiting long periods of time after the freeze up have no effect, until i hard reset my computer(hold down power button for 5-7 seconds) which I hate to do because I know that it can really mess up your system after doing it repeatatively, thus, this problem is becoming more and more painful to deal with.

Here's what I do know

Computer worked perfectly fine BEFORE windows 7 was installed. I was running on Windows Vista 64 bit previously. I did a FULL wipe of my harddrive to install windows 7 64-bit. Before doing the installation, I checked with the windows 7 compatability check to make sure my hardware was all compatable with the change. Below is an Everest full report of my system with everything in it. Most websites that deal with these computer problems like to have some sort of report to work with.

After the installation, I had to reinstall my Nvidia graphics driver to

I went to my monitors website to see if they had a driver, they had no compatable drivers for my monitor, although, After installing the nvidia graphics driver, my monitor went back to normal in widescreen allowing my to run at a 1920x1080 resolution and seems to work fine now.

Hi,

I have my laptop for almost a year now and I'm starting to get more and more problems.

As soon as I upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7, it started freezing sometimes. These freezes appeared too be totally random: about once a week, sometimes with only one application running, sometimes with alot, sometimes 10 minutes after startup, sometimes 4 hours after startup etc... It is just running smoothly before these crashes and it does again after.

But since about a month it started getting worse. It freezes almost every day now (sometimes with a weird bluescreen) and sometimes it can't boot (also when it was shut down normally). When this happens it first looks normal with the animated windows 7 logo and then suddenly I get a bluescreen for a fraction of a second and it reboots. Then I'm given two options: to use startup repair or to boot normally. When I choose to boot normally, it fails again. When I choose to use startup repair, it says it can't repair after a while, but when I press cancel after that my laptop can boot again normally (for a few times at least).

I have a lot of restore points but Windows can't seem to use any of them .

Some things that might be related:
I had some problems with viruses lately, which caused some random changes like messing up my Google Chrome settings and deleting my 'open on startup' applications.
I once spillt some tea on my laptop which caused it to crash, but it worked again after leaving it to dry for a few days.

Now that you've upgraded windows 7 from Vista, that could be a major reason of all these problems. Doing a clean install can keep you happy.

Hello!
I've already asked the
question regarding auto-starting the data collector sets and have posted MS's answer - now it seems the issue can be much broader: I failed to make my user defined data collector sets start according to their schedules, for example:
I created a test data collector set (with several CPU counters), saved it as a template and tested it on Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows Server 2019:
2008R2

2019

I've tested various user defined data collector sets on all my Windows Server 2019 computers - physical and virtual, domain and non-domain joined, the result is always the same - the data collector sets just don't start and the following event(s) get registered
in the Diagnosis-PLA log:

Here's the codes' description -
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols/ms-pla/590752a5-ddc3-49e4-9914-147a90bd0193

No issues arise when starting the data collector sets manually.
Can anyone tell me if it works on your computers with Windows Server 2019?

Regards,
Michael

Hey all.... I'm new to this forum, but I'm not new to computers or fixing problems, but I've come across one that I can't seem to figure out:

I'm running Windows XP Media Center on an HP Pavilion laptop. Basically, upon startup, the start menu, quicklaunch, and taskbar all freeze, and I can't use them... I can access the start menu using keyboard shortcuts, but only momentarily before it disappears. I am able to click things on the desktop, but once I open a program or window, whatever I have open de-selects itself, and I have use Alt+Tab to get it back.

This seems to be the most telling problem: whenever I open a window (IE, Firefox, or even a Windows window (my documents, etc.)), after a few seconds it automatically goes back to whatever previous screen I had open.... as if I hit the "Back" buton". So it let's me get nothing done.

All this still happens when in Safe Mode.

I've updated and run all sorts of programs, which makes me believe this might not be adware, spyware, malware or necessarily a virus or trojan.

I've run Norton Antivirus, Sybot, Adaware Pro, CWShredder, Windows Defender, AVG Spyware and AntiVirus, online Bitdefender. They've found a few minor problems (a little spyware and a minor virus or trojan), and fixed/deleted them, to the point where now when i run them they find no viruses or anything, but still the problems persist. I have all the recent Windows Updates, so I'm lost.

A:Menus Freeze, Windows Problems, Not Virus Or Adware/spyware?

Hi shipwrecked77 and welcome to BleepingComputer.

I hope you are not running both Norton and AVG at the same time, you should only run anti virus at a time otherwise you will start getting problems like false positives.

When you ran your scans did you run them in safe mode, if not try that as you have a better chance of catching problems there. It does sound like malware.

I am getting tired of having to restart IE7. What is going on with this freezing problem. It started about three or four weeks ago, and hasn't stopped. Seems everytime I access the internet the system freezes up (at least two or three times, each time).

I am now running it without any add-ons, and still have the same problem. Any suggestions? I am getting really annoyed.

Hi Barnum,

Have you run an extensive malware scan? If not, I suggest you do with an Antivirus and antispyware program. Have you tried a different browser and if so, does it happen with that as well?

So i woke up today and my laptop was closed, assumed windows 10 updated something again by itself.

The weird thing is that after like maybe then minutes, while using firefox, firefox stopped responding, and i couldnt open task manager either.

Then after a restart i also went into wow which after like 10 mins again stopped responding, then alt tabbed to firefox which was working but in like 30 seconds it stopped responding as well, and task manager couldnt open either

I assume it was my bit defender anti virus that wasnt in game mode so i put it in gamemode after the 3rd restart.
In that one i opened task manager from the beginning, as expected wow stopped responding in like 10 mins again and i alt tabbed to task manager and killed the process. The weird thing was that WoW was consuming 0% of cpu before i killed it, after i pressed end task, WoW closed but it would still remain on the task manager, then task manager also stopped responding.

I am not sure what could be causing this, i am trying a full systems scan with bit defender to see if it is a virus or something, anyone has seen this problem before?

EDIT: after trying out rescue mode to scan each drive, one of those gave me an error that it wasn't there or something.

whenever I go online, regardless of which browser I use, after about 20 minutes the page / pages I'm currently viewing stop responding. If I try to refresh, open a new page, or switch browsers, i get the message "the connection has timed out". At that point IE, FF, and also IE and FF download managers will not work again unless I restart my computer.

I thought it might be a problem with the wireless modem but the connection strength displays "excellent", the settings indicate that its connected, I am able to connect to other computers in my workgroup (via wireless modem) and other applications (some but not all) are still able to download files from the internet.

My guess is that it might be related to an http protocol problem, and for some reason after about twenty minutes all software using an http protocol stops working. I couldn't begin to guess why and I don't have much understanding of that area...

At my workplace, we have about 9 PC's, all of them Dell Dimension 3000 with 512 MB each. They all have a shared drive mapped out to the server which has a Windows 2000 Server. At around 12:20-12:30, 3 computers start freezing. Apparently, this has happened before with the computers they replaced, so I think its a server problem.

I've scanned them with Mcafee, Trendmicro, Panda, Spybot, Adaware and Microsoft Antispyware. I've cleaned out the temp folders and defragged the drives. They still freeze,

What else can i do?

Good evening,

I have been experiencing a problem for several weeks now that has me perplexed. My computer is off during the day while I am at work. I come home, I turn it on, and it freezes (without fail) withing 30 minutes. I restart, and it is fine for the rest of the night.

I previously wrestled with a power issue which was causing a system restart every time I used a graphics intensive operation. However I now should have more than enough power going to any one component, and it should not be an issue. System specs and SysInfo are below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i recently got a DSL-connection, and the celebrations would never end. i thought. i bought a webcam for the fun of it, and logged on to msn messenger (6.2). ofcourse i wanted to try out the cam, and clicked "invite to view webcam". then the messenger froze. when i tried to close it, a message popped up and told me messenger didn't respond. after nagging about "report to microsoft", i finally got back into the usual windows. the problem now was that the computer couldn't find my internet connection, so i restarted the router. the connection was refound, and i went back to messenger. then i discovered that file transfers caused the same error to occur, and i have not yet tried voice chat, but i'm guessing it will cause the same problem.

what is the problem here? file transfers aren't a problem with trillian, but trillian doesn't have the webcam function...help?

A:Why does my msn messenger freeze all the time?

Are you running any software firewall? Try disabling that, including the Windows builtin one.

MSN messenger tries to use uPNP for streaming media, it may be that this is causing the failure. Check the status of the uPNP services in Windows and on your router.

Many people have solved many Messenger problems by upgrading to the 7.0 beta version.

Ok...so i built my first computer this summer. I had it dual booting with Fedora 7 and xp sp2. Both Operating Systems exhibited weird behavior, freezed and random restarts. I was getting kernel panics on both sides. After playing with both systems I have convinced myself that hardware must be causeing the problem. I decided to delete the Linux partition as the Windows side was giving me errors and crashes that were more predictable. Here are me specs:

Case: NZXT Zero (black)
MoBo: Asus M2N32-Sli DLX Wifi AM2
GPU : 2 of Evga (nvidia) 7950 GT 256mb ram
PSU : Rosewill 550w
CPU : AMD x2 5600 2x1mb cache
RAM : 2 of 1gb Corsair (can't remember the exact ones, but it was on the aproved list for the mobo)
HDD : 320gb SATA Segate 7k 16mb
DVD : lightscribe burn lite-on

i can get links and models numbers later...doing this on the road from memory ;-)

Here's my problem. When running windows the machine starts up most of the time (95%) with no problems. As long as I am doing someing (i.e. WoW, surfing, watching mlb tv....) things run pretty smoothly. However if I leave the machine idle for 1-2 hours...sometimes it has to be longer, the machine will freeze. Usually giving me a black unresponsive screen. I googled this and it appears that sometimes with large lcd's the BSOD can't get displayed if the resolution is too large.
