Vista: "The Semaphore Timeout Period Has Expired"

Q: Vista: "The Semaphore Timeout Period Has Expired"

This error, "the semaphore timeout period has expired" keeps popping up when I transfer files over a network. They'll go for about half, and then this error pops up and it's over.

How do I fix that?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is this a Linksys Router?

Wired or WIFI?

Are you using an Internet Security Suite or ZoneAlarm?
This may also be thr problem....
This can happen when the total path length of the source file
and the total path length of the destination file are greater than a given
value, 128 I believe. When this occures in windows, it results in a Path
Too Deep error.

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

A:Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Good Morning All,

I am having issues installing Windows updates, they have been failing upon install for the past 3-4 months.  I get the error code 80070079, "The Semaphore timeout has expired".  So I tried backing up my data to just wipe it and reload the OS, the backup fails as well, same error message.  Then I tried moving files manually to an external drive and that as well timeouts on the larger files.  I have searched the Internet and it many people seem to have this issue and it relates to the network adapter, but I am not trying to do anything over the network (Updates are already downloaded just waiting to install), so I feel it is something else.  Does anyone know of a fix or possible solution?  I searched semaphore through the registry and there are a lot of entries, but not sure if i need to change any of them or not?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

My computer that had been running the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium since early 2009 had become an appliance:  It worked every time it was turned on and it handled every network transaction that came through my DSL line.  I had set the "Windows
Update" program to check for updates periodically, every month or so, and then to inform me when ever any update was available.  I could tell when the "Windows Update" program had been checking for updates, as the CPU usage went up to 100
percent with the used memory amount "sawtoothed" up and down for about 15 to 20 minutes.   The "Windows Update" then would tell me about the available updates and it would ask whether it should load any of those.

This  worked until about January 2016.  At that time, the "Windows Update" CPU usage would stay at 100 percent for more than an hour.  After that, it gradually got worse:  Around June 2016, it held the CPU at 100 percent usage
for about 14 hours.  In August 2016, the CPU is held at 100 percent usage by the "Windows Update" for more than 45 hours with no end in sight.  It did find some updates to load, but it would not load them as the CPU had no time to do that.

"Windows Update" is currently holding the CPU at 100 percent load  this every time the machine is booted up until all of the updates are loaded and it can not do this as the C... Read more

For my birthday this year, when my parents asked me what I wanted, I told them all I wanted was Flash. Unfortunately, I did not specify which version of Flash I wanted, so they immediately got the cheapest version they could find (and I don't really blame them). Anyway, they went ahead and got me an unopened version of Macromedia Flash MX 2004, which, of course, no longer has any sort of customer support. I just got around to installing it today, and when I was prompted to do so, I entered the valid serial number that came in the box. It said that the activation was successful, so I pressed continue, and the activation screen closed, but Flash did not launch. I tried to launch it, but it brought up a screen saying that my "Trial Period" had ended, and that I needed to activate my software. I proceeded to activate my software again by phone, hoping that before it had been some sort of internet problem. However, the same thing happened. My activation was successful, but when it closed and I had to relaunch, it said that my trial period was over. I called all the numbers I could find for customer support, but they all said that they no longer supported the product (however they did say that the activations I had made were successful after all). Does anyone have any solutions/advice other than buying a newer version of Flash?

While it is only a minor problem, it irritates me to not find the desktop on the screen. This never happened in previous builds of Win 10, only 14971.

I should note that in "Power Options" in the "Control Panel", I have set my Power Plan as "High Performance", and have set the computer to "Never" turn off the display and to "Never" put the computer to sleep. I do not know if this is related to my problem, but mention it if it is.I also looked at other "Settings" and could find nothing that should cause this activity.

Hey guys,

I have another ravishing question for you. I have many (and I mean many) files where the words within the filename are separated not by spaces but rather by periods.

Example:
My.Summer.Vacation.mkv

This is because my family uploads movies and other content on sites like Rapidshare and Hotfile, in which the filename cannot contain spaces. Therefore people use periods to separate the words of a given file.

My question is the following, is there a way to index my hard drives using either Windows 7 search or even Google Desktop in order to return a search result for the word "vacation" in my above example. At the moment it does not return a result since the word vacation is not separated by spaces.

As per my usual etiquette, if anyone helps me figure this out, I will post images of how to do so in the replies section of this posts.

Thanks for any input,
Missionman

Hello,

I cannot find the correct method for removing the expired trial version of Outlook which was included with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office Home and Business Office 2010.

I have Word and also Excel which I use in my business. What I want to do is be able to use the "send email" tab in the Excel file drop down menu. But when I click on the send as email tab, Outlook Tries to open, but I get this message window: "Thank you for installing Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010. This trial has expired. You may purchase a full version at any time by clicking upgrade now (below)"

I do not use Outlook at all. I prefer to use gmail as the default email. I want to be able to click on any link to reply or send an email and have gmail pop open (like Outlook tries to do).

I have read several link articles on how to do this, but none have worked. ANYONE ??

Thanks!

A:Outlook "Trial Expired" I want to use Gmail as my go to email

Hey Ricobob-

I'm not as familiar with using strictly web-based email accounts (or Excel) as some, so there might very well be an easy way for you to do this without using any third party email programs, but what about installing Thunderbird (free)?

It sounds as if Outlook is the default email for Excel (??). I don't know if you are able to change the defaulted email client to what you want within Excel, or if it uses the system's defaulted email. I'm not even sure you can use a non-MS email client, as I know nothing about Excel.

You should be able to easily configure Thunderbird to work with your Gmail account. In fact, I think it might do most of it for you.

If interested in, see HERE and HERE.

Now my problem is whenever I boot up my computer, and it tries to load windows, the screen starts getting crazy green lines (http://imgur.com/gbVtBqP) goes black, and eventually a blue screen pops up (http://imgur.com/O8IMBJg).

Now it should be known, I have just received my computer back from Asus repair where I RMAd it because the motherboard had to be replaced because it was surged and no longer allowing it to charge. We also replaced the hard drive disk. The time between it stopped charging and I sent it and got it back repaired was 28 weeks. I never had this problem prior to the motherboard busting, and have had it since getting it back. When it first happened, I thought it was because since I had gotten it back I had not updated my drivers (all my data had been erased), so I updated to the most recent version, and for the most part the problem was fixed, until all of a sudden it started again.

The problem first started occurring while playing games, the computer would get the green lines above, completely freeze and have to be restarted. Then it started to get the green lines, black out, and come back giving a message saying "the display ... Read more

Hi there.

I am looking for some software to impose time limit restriction for logons (with more flexibility than the built in parental controls) and also time limits for running programs (e.g. 2 hours for program X, an hour for program Y, no limit for program Z, etc). It would be nice if it has remote management through a web interface, but that is not essential. I was wondering if anyone has recommendations?

I found Romaco Timeout, which looks like it would at least do what is needed for logons (and maybe programs, too), but this has been discontinued. It doesn't matter if it's paid or free, just something that is maintained and compatible with Windows 7 64 bit.

I've seen TimesUpKidz, which seems to be good but just does logon limits (as far as I can tell) rather than programs as well.

I know it sounds quite unkind, but my stepdaughter can end up spending all day just playing games and watching videos on YouTube (and similar sites). Her mother wants to put some limits in place, which we have already done at router level for Internet access. We don't want to have to keep continually spend our time "policing" her, but rather she has predefined time limits (which has worked well with her Internet time) and give her responsibility for using her time.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Daznov

Hi Daznov and Welcome to Seven Forums .. You seem to have found most of the Software which imposes time limits .. Except for Computer Time .. It is not Free though but might be what you are looking for ..

I'm experiencing BSID issues apparently due to graphic card.

Computer:vaio vgn-fw51mf laptop
system : windows 7 home premium 64 service pack 1.
graphic card:

The issues started with computer bugs when Alt-tabbing, but one day I got a "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from timeout" bluescreen and since then the only way to make the computer run properly is to disable the graphic card driver from the control pannel.

The bluescreen does not allways appear, but the screen frequently goes black just right after the windows screen, or sometimes windows starts but I immediately get continuous ?Display driver stopped responding and has recovered? errors.

Initially I thought that it was a hard drive issue, as I've been running the computer several months with an almost full hard drive, but now that I freed some HD space (205 free GB out of 454 GB) the problem persist.

I tried to unistall my drivers and update them: any results. I hope not have a hardware issue!

Please, any help will be precious!
Thanks in advance

Hi Lee,

Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking by restarting your computer, tapping F8 and select this option. See if you can access the problematic site(s) with out any issues.

Is this a wired or wireless issue? Have you tried connecting using both options?

Hi all,

So my monitor randomly blacks out during gameplay, this issue has occured while I've been playing Minecraft and League of Legends. However, it is yet to hinder me while I play Battlefield or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Simply put, it's just damn strange.

I recently upgraded to an MSI mainboard and now I actually get an error message.

MSI BIOS report: "HyperTransport Sync Flood Error"
Event Viewer report: "HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Processor ID: 0"

The problem only persists while the Radeon HD 6770 is installed but not while the GeForce 9500GT is installed.

Hyper Transport is processor technology (as far as I'm aware). So I'm left confused (again), I'd really like to know what my card is doing to cause such a stir. Or is it totally down to the processor? Any thoughts...

If any information is needed, ask away

I understand that maybe a couple of you read up on my previous and unresolved 'BSOD problem' but since I'm actually getting an error, I thought I'd put it forward and see of I get any joy out of this.

A:Solved: "HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error"

I've finally figured out the solution to this god damned problem. I can't believe I didn't try this in the first place.. So a big *facepalm* for me.

If anyone else is having a similar problem regarding the HyperTransport, increase the voltage to it to around 1.3V if this is your default and you have a decent PSU, you could try boosting it a little more.

I hope this does help someone as I almost had my hair out with it.

Hey there,

I've been having this issue for a while now and I'm starting to become more bewildered by the minute. After buying the PC back in April and receiving it via mail (from Overclockers.co.uk), I've had numerous bluescreens (most of which happened while gaming, one happened on the desktop when using Photoshop CS5) mentioning a clock timeout.

I have Windows 7 and a Motorola SB5101 Modem. My problem is that I'm getting a consistent "connection timed out" error on a specific website and no other site seems to be affected by it on three different browsers. The only thing I can figure is something having to do with a brief power outage that happened last night. I have tried disabling all my AV/Firewall programs, resetting the modem, trying to open port 443 (the port mentioned in the error message), system restore a couple days back and safe mode with networking, all to no avail.

Firstly, i was on problem where my monitor stopped to turn off in 1 minute (Im using auto turn off monitor). I tried to figure out what the problem is. Then i tried the settings on command prompt. I used "powercfg.exe /?" to see the list of available commands and i modified value of "powercfg-change-monitor-timeout-ac" into 0.1

And, it doesnt work. My monitor still wont shut. Next, i reboot my computer and after that, i waited for 1 min on my desktop and monitor finally turned off.

lol. So the problem is because i havent reboot my computer yet.

So my question is, what is the default value of that setting (powercfg-change-monitor-timeout-ac) and what is the function of that command? I need to revert it back to default because i have screw it up.

Thanks.

I have just installed 7600.16385 and have two problems: 1) a two-minute timeout while the "Starting Windows" screen is displayed while booting, and 2) CD/DVD drive does not show up in Device Manager.

System configuration in tech specs below.

I saw the same problem on both RC1 and 7264.

While booting, the system stalls at "Starting Windows" for 2+ minutes. This error message is in the event log:

I got a client that logs into our web based ticketing system. They are constantly kicked off the site with a session expired error just after a couple minutes of being logged in.

I have cleared their cache, deleted cookies, and reset their password within the site a few times. I am kind of stuck on what could be causing them to get a session expired error so quickly after log in. They are not able to stay connected to carry out functions.

Any ideas what else could cause this issue?

A:Solved: "Session Expired" Assistance please

Just a suggestion..
Check your ticketing system's config files and find a web.xml file.

Check to find a session timeout setting. It should look like this:
<session-config> <session-timeout>120</session-timeout> </session-config>

It may have a browser specific command or the timeout values are the issue.
Also, try having them view it in another browser.

Again, not 100% sure, just a suggestion.

I type in Google.com or Google and this thing keeps wanting to go to https://www.google.com (as in secure with an "s"). I also get an error message saying "Certificate Expired". What is causing this?

The hosts file is normal.

Google is now redirecting to https:// They are no longer using http. What browser are you using? (IE, Firefox, Chrome)? Delete all temporary internet cache, cookies etc. Do a full scan with Anti Virus software, and Malwarebytes, followed by CCleaner. Try a different browser. Make sure computer has all Windows Updates.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi Win7 Users,

I'm new to this forum and I would like to open a discussion how to fix my internet problem. I tried to contact the Costumer Support of my ISP but I think they cannot help me with this problem as I submit a lot of tickets and calls already but they are not able to make any steps how to fix this.

I'm actually having a bad internet connection. I run a Command Prompt (cmd) and type "ping google.com -t" (without quotes) to check my internet status. Here's my problem regarding my internet. See image below...

As you can see, that looks very2x slow and made me really mad most of the time. Does anyone have experience the same problem? Could you provide some helpful suggestions how to fix this?

Please comment below if I'm lacking any information regarding this problem. Will provide anything.

Thanks!

I've got everything up and running with my Vista x64 pc (finally!) and I wanted to put my pictures/videos/music on it. I plugged in my 1tb (WD MyBook Essential 2.0, powered separately from pc) external hdd and heard the "beep" or whatever that sound is that Windows makes when it acknowledges a USB device. However, when I tried to open up "Computer" it froze (just that window, not the whole pc) and I realized it was still registering the drive. I have to wait about 10 minutes before I can actually pull up the contents of the drive. Every time I plug it back in it does the same thing. This DOES NOT happen on any of the 3 or 4 XP machines I have plugged this into...it is immediately recognized and I can view the contents instantly.

When it comes to transferring files, it is VERY slow (approx. 2mbps) and in some cases, it won't let me transfer the file because it says the file/folder is corrupt. But if I plug it into my XP machine, the file/folder is fine and I can view or open it no problem.

I tried using a SanDisk 4gb flash drive to make sure it wasn't just my drive. It recognized this no problem (Windows made the "beep") and I could view the contents instantly, but I when I try to transfer files, it starts out fast (approx. 30mbps) then slows down, freezes, and eventually "loses" the drive. It says it can no longer find the drive. When I go to unplug it, I notice the flash drive's light is off and when I unplug it, I hear the Windows... Read more
