My Laptop Gets VERY HOT...I used to leave it on for days at a time. HELP

Q: My Laptop Gets VERY HOT...I used to leave it on for days at a time. HELP

Hello I have a DELL XPS M170 Laptop. I used to run an ebay business which I would sell INSTANT DELIVERY items. I used Outlook Express to send emails once I had received payment. Outlook Express has an option that it will automatically send emails if it picks up key words. The problem was that my laptop had to be on with Outlook Express running in order to instantly send emails. I used to leave my laptop on for days at a time, not only that but I had it on a bed so there wasnt any airflow. I know im a IDIOT for that and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. My laptop doesnt have any problems like shutting down or anything like that. It actually still runs perfectly except that it gets so hot I could barely touch the bottom of it. After leaving it on for a couple hours i could feel the heat coming through the top. I need your help guys what can I do to fix my very hot laptop. What part do I need to replace (because I know I need to replace something) in order to get my laptop back to its original condition? All the replys from other people about this type of situation always say use air to blow out dust but that is clearly not the case for me. I left my laptop on for days and it wasnt on a flat surface. I basically just need to know what i need to replace in my laptop and I can just purchase the new part and install it myself. I am aware of laptop cooling pads but I just want to fix the problem. I would really appreciate ANY help from anyone who knows which part is getting hot from leaving it on too long. Thanks! Robert Cestero

If you would like to send me a direct email please send it to - [email protected] - thats my sidekick email so i will get it immediately. But i will check these posts so that will be fine too. Thank you guys soo much!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is this okay? I usually shut my laptop off every night before bed. But lately I have been having shutdown and start up problems. Something is causing Windows to hang during shutdown, and therefore I have to hold the power button down for it to turn off.
Doing this at night, then causes Windows not to want to boot up in the morning. It eventually boots up and loads fine after a few attempts. So instead of having to deal with the frustration of doing this every night, is it acceptable to leave it on for a few days at a time?

(And in regards to the problem my laptop is having, My CD-ROM is also broken..so at this time, I'm unable to use the Windows recovery disk :/)

A:Leaving Laptop on for a few days at a time.

It won't hurt it as long as it has enough ventilation. Don't stuff it into a corner or anything. You could also set it to hibernate, which basically turns it off without shutting down Windows. Of you could just put it in standby, which uses more power but basically does the same thing.

From Google, the sound distortion appears to be worldwide and has been around for a long time - but Dell tech support appears they know nothing about it. I'm using Windows 7 SP-1. The distortion will stop if I reboot. Without rebooting, the distortion returns anywhere within a few hours to a few days and, as time goes on, the distortion gets much worse. If you have any ideas on how to fix this issue, I will provide as many other particulars about my computer and software as you need. If there is no known solution, I believe a class action suit may be warranted. Thank you in advance.

I always leave my computer on for virus scan, error checking and downloading or uploading for days,

is it actually good to do that?

are there any down sides of always keeping a computer on for days?

any idea? suggestions?

A:Is It Good To Leave A Computer On For Days?

It's definitely not 'good', but it's not that harmful unless you're computer is getting REALLY heated while you're gone, because then you could have a fire while you're away from the house/computer.
But as long as your computer isn't getting ridiculously hot while it's on, it should be fine.

The only downside is that wires will start getting burnt. For example, the other day I had to replace the wire going from my graphics card to my motherboard because the part connecting to my graphics card was turning a golden brown because my graphics card was getting hot. Either way, I replaced the power supply and added an extra fan as well as gave it a good cleaning and stuff, and not to mention the wire's been in my computer for almost 6 years.

On topic: You shouldn't have a problem as long as you have ventilation and maybe consider an extra fan or a higher watt'd power supply if you notice any smells of burning or anything. If you still smell the burning of stuff after upping the wattage and everything, then take it to a computer shop and let them look at it. But I'm ranting. There should be no problem.

I've noticed that if I leave my XP machine on for a few days straight that the Task Manager won't open. Also, Notepad doesn't work nor a few other programs.

I have scanned the computer in safe mode w/Networking with Malware Bytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and in regular mode with Spybot Search and Destroy and Avira.

They didn't find anything.

However a few weeks ago Microsoft Security Essentials found:

and removed it twice in a few days.

I'm not sure what that is or how it got there. But I do know this:
I have some issues with the task manager not opening after the machine has run a few days. And the computer is about 5 years old with two hard drives. Both have XP loaded on them but I boot from only one.

Curious what the problem may be. I figured virus but none of the programs I use are finding one.

I have run:
-Spybot Search and Destroy
-Malware Bytes
-Microsoft Security Essentials
-Avira Antivirus

thanks for any help!

I use my laptop almost exclusively at my desk with it plugged into the wall. Should I unplug when it gets to full charge or should I remove the battery and keep it plugged in or what??I've read different answers and just want the best for my laptop. I run Photoshop and Lightroom as well as other programs so it gets a good daily wookout. Any advise would be helpful. Also, Im getting another EXACT memory stick (matches the sticker with all numbers, etc), do I just have to pop it in or is there something else I need to do? Currently have 4GB and adding another 4GB stick. Thanks again!

A:Is it OK to leave plugged in all the time or should I remove...

Device batteries typically deteriorate based on two factors.  Age and amount of hours they are charged.  If it is charging while at 100% then the charging is being wasted.  But even a battery that is not charged deteriorates over a number of years and will eventual stop providing consistent power.  The way I personally decide to handle this is that I plug in the device when the battery is low and I unplug it anytime I notice it is at 100%. I think you are talking about a stick of RAM.  You will need to turn the device off and disconnect all power.  It should automatically begin working once you plug it in and turn on the device.  You can check in Windows to see how much memory is installed.  Enter the "System" window by using shortcut keys "Windows Key + X" and selecting "System."  The data in the middle includes "Installed Memory (RAM)." I hope this helps! #HPExpertDay

I'm wondering if it's better or worse for the computer to leave it on all the time? I'm running a new PC with XP. a P4 2.53Ghz, 512RDRAM, and the rest of the normal goodies. Monitor is a 21" Viewsonic.

Right now, I have all the power settings set to "Never" but my monitor shuts off after an hour.

I've heard it both ways - that it's better for electronics such as computers to be left on all the time instead of turning off and on....or that it's better to save wear & tear by shutting down when they won't be used for a while.

I have DSL, running Norton AV, ZoneAlarm on it.

Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

I know this question has been around a long time, and I know there are plenty of answers out there, but I am finding a lot of different opinions out there, and many of them are old and perhaps not relevant to today's smart batteries, so I'm starting a new thread for this question: Is it bad to leave the laptop plugged in all the time? I don't mean like weeks or even days, I usually unplug at night or when not using. What I mean is during my 8-hour work days, is it OK to just leave it plugged in the whole time? Or, should I let it discharge and then recharge, either a lot or occasionally? I'm most concerned with the long-term battery life here...thanks for your thoughts!

A:Is it bad for battery to leave it plugged in all the time?

The "usual" advice still stands. A battery that becomes "lazy" -- never fully discharges (and is fully recharged) -- loses its ability to deliver "full-cycle" service. Computers are getting smarter -- slowing-down the CPU, and dimming the display -- when running on battery power, in order to extend the usage of the current charge. The power-management software in some Lenovo computers even _refuses_ to fully-charge the battery, if the software detects that you typically run the laptop on AC power most of the time.  This extends the life of the battery.

The title basically spells it out. I would like to know if leaving my WiFi switch on my laptop on all the time is a bad idea? Would I see any performance hit because my system is constantly looking for a WiFi signal?

A:Is it alright if I leave my Wifi switch on all the time?

I leave my switch on all the time and have never seen any performance hit. It would be mighty inconvenient to keep it switched off, then switch it on everytime I need to use the internet.

And your system is not constantly looking for a wifi signal. Once you've connected to your home network, it would stay connected to that.

All of the attached DMP files are of the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a) bug check.

This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high. The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

Hi everyone.

I recently bought a custom-made computer from a well established business in the UK.

The computer arrived and as I was installing everything onto it, the internet dropped out a few times. I thought nothing of it and continued. After a day or two, the dropping out happened more and more until after about 4-6 days, it become unusable.

I contacted the business, and they sent out a new network card. Whilst I was waiting for this to arrive, I tried using a USB adaptor instead of the installed card. This worked fine, until again, after 2 days or so, it started having the same issues and then stopped working completely after a similar amount of time.

The new network card has now arrived and after 2 days, the errors seem to start to be happening again. It has dropped out 3 times now and looks as though to be getting more frequent like before.

I have tried numerous attempts to fix the errors - resetting the adaptor, reinstalling the adaptor, pausing anti-virus, and all the other methods I could find online - but none have made any difference. Using the troubleshooter works okay for the first few times, but as the issue gets worse, it becomes less and less effective. The errors it reports change but most often it is related to a gateway not being available, or there being some form of IP issue.

Perhaps worth noting is that I use my phone as a hotspot as the internet signal is terrible where I have the computer. However, I've tested it, and it works absolutely fi... Read more

I just watched a YouTube video of a Win7 Image Restoration.
The author indicated he had trouble restoring a System Image that was over 30 days old, due to the fact that the 30 day activation period for Win7 had expired from the time the System Image was made. It returned an error message for an Image that was over 30 days old, whereas an Image that was restored within 30 days of making it did not. Can anyone definitively shed some light on this? Do I have to create a new System Image each 30 days to remain protected due to Microsoft activation requirements?

This guy did not activate his system with a valid product key. Else there is no such restriction.

in this video Laura E. Hunter from Microsoft describes behavior analytics: https://youtu.be/hNZdboDvnuU?t=1251
She says that ATA will analyze the behavior in a domain for 21 days and declare this as normal behavior. After the 21 days ATA will report unusual user behavior based on the 21 days analysis.
I have two questions about this:
1. Can we see the progress of the analysis somewhere? I searched through the ATA-center but there is nothing. Is it possible to see it in some kind of logfile or the Mongo-DB?
2. We have started ATA with one DC. What happens if we add our other DCs later? Will the analysis recognize behavior from those, also when the 21 days are already over?
I did not find anything about this 21 days analys period in the documentation. I'm more than happy with a hint if I have overseen something there.
Thanks in advance

If you can, post any minidumps created by the BSOD's by going to C:\windows\minidump and select all the .dmp files. Right-click sending all the files to a compressed(zipped)folder. Upload this folder as a file here.

Wasn't sure where to post this!

Not having had a laptop before and having always left my p.c. on all day, I'm not sure whether doing the same with the laptop would be harmful to it as regards it overheating - should I switch it on and off three or four times a day as I use it?

Thanks for any advice you might be able to give.

A:? Leave Laptop Switched on Or Not?

If your desk isn't that tidy make sure your not blocking any of the cooling vents.

If you think its getting a bit hot then you can get a "stand" that holds the base off the desk at a better angle for typing and allows a better air flow. Some of these have built in fans which might help. To be honest you dn't need one.

The power saving can still be set so that your machine switches off monitor and hard dreive after a period and most laptops have other power saving features which are still worth using when left plugged in on a desk, just change the timings so they don't cut in at enoyingly short intervals.

Also as you might occasionally use your laptop on the move I'd run the battery down once a month just to check how long it works on battery. Its not unusual to find a laptop thats been plugged in for over a year with a battery thats worn out and lasts about 5mins.

In short leave it on and set up the power saving for the way you work.

Any desktop or laptop can be run for as long as you like under proper conditions, however one concern may be overheating if you are going to leave it running a MineCraft server.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on Lenovo laptop running at 1.90GHz.

Power options set on high performance.
Sleeps when I close the lid.

The BSOD occurs whether I close the top to put it to sleep or just leave it open to continue running.

The BSOD: Driver Power State Failure

I've followed posting instructions and uploaded the zip file.

A:BSOD whenever I leave the laptop idle for a 2+ hours.

Welcome to Seven Forums.

The BSOD seems to be caused by:
S6000KNT.sys Mon Sep 13 09:18:58 2010 (4C8D9822)
Chicony Webcam Driver
Update to the latest version available. If that does not help, unplug the device and remove any related software and see if that helps.

sptd.sys Sat Mar 3 22:45:52 2012 (4F524AC0)
SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools (known BSOD issues with Win7)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=sptd.sysUninstall DAEMON Tools and any Alcohol % software. It uses a driver called sptd.sys which is known to cause BSODs in Windows 7. Uninstall the software using Add/Remove Programs. Reboot the system. Once the program is uninstalled, run sptd.sys uninstaller to remove the driver from your system.
As an alternative, many people recommend the use of Total Mounter or Magic ISOKeep less stuff at the start-up. Only anti-virus, this helps avoid driver conflicts and improves time to log in to windows.

With the comp on. Is that too much for the battery? Its Li-Ion. Would my battery last longer if I took it out when I have the laptop plugged in? From what I was told, you should constantly try to keep the Li-Ion batteries as full as possible to have the maximum battery life.

A:Is it safe to leave laptop plugged in 12hours a day

If the laptop maker has designed the charger correctly, it should be OK.

I certainly leave mine on for a week or so at a time, and it has not hurt it.

The simplest check is to feel if the batteries are staying warm. If so, they may get damaged by the constant charge, mine stay almost cold after they have charged for a day or a week. They may be warm while recharging though.

Hi all

I'm using a thinkpad T60. I think my battery is out, I've been checking it through the ThinkVantage and it said battery ok but should discharge and recharge. I did that and it was ok for a few weeks but power gauge always says 80%-90% and less than a hour, it goes into hibernation.

Now, without AC, my thinkpad can't be switched on. I leave the ac on while the battery is still attached to use it. The battery icon is orange and blinking. When I've shut down, I remove the ac plug. I've never removed the battery before since I've used this thinkpad 4 years ago.

Is this harmful to my thinkpad, all my data and stuff?
I'm reluctant to remove the battery in case dust gathers around the exposed portion. I'm also reluctant to buy a new battery as I'm thinking of getting a new netbook, those 10" type of laptop.
What's the best way to manage and keep using this thinkpad without a new battery, or is it a big NO NO???

Please help, I'm not very IT savvy. Thanks in advance!

I have been using a Win'7 HP (64-bit) based Acer notebook for sometime. Recently, I noticed that the battery was draining faster than earlier. After I read some posts on the web, I changed the power options to 'hibernate' intead of 'sleep' when the lid is closed, as it seems hibernate consumes less battery than 'sleep' mode. However, I noticed that when the system comes back to life from hibernate, it seems to consume more power, than when the system resumes from 'sleep' mode.
Can someone advise me on whether I should retain the 'hibernate' or revert to 'sleep' mode to have better battery life / backup ?

A:Is it better to leave laptop on 'hibernate' or 'sleep' in Windows 7 HP

Use Hibernation when you are not going to use the computer for a few hours or more.

Hibernate takes a snapshot of everything you got on RAM (including any windows and apps running) and saves it to a special hard disk file and then shuts the computer down, when you resume from hibernation the computer boots a bit faster than a normal power up bootup. This method does not consume any power while the computer is off.

Use Sleep Mode when you are just leaving the computer for a few minutes or hours, like at lunchtime or something like that.

Sleep, basically shuts your computer down except some components like RAM, so the next time you resume, it will boot almost in an instant. However, this method consumes battery power.

Your battery may be starting to have a broblem also.

I recently bought my HP Pavilion for school, as of a few days ago I noticed I didn't have sound anymore? I have tried going to my control panel, device manager, and checking the sounds, I have made sure the volume is not on mute, device manager states that my volume, speakers, and headphones are working. I don't know what else to do! Any help would be appreciated!

A recent Windows 10 update is causing sound issues. See here for more info: https://news.google.com/search?q=sound "windows 10"&hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en

Hi all,

I have noticed that my laptop speed has been slowing down lately. I know that a couple of my friends used my laptop last week and I am not sure what sites they went to, but I was just wondering if everything on here is A-ok. Here's my HJT log; can anyone kindly look over it for me just to check if there are any trojans or what not? This is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I purchased brand new HP laptop (ay503tx) a few days back from an authorized seller (Grab A Gadget) through Amazon. The status of my battery as per the HP Support Assistant is "OK" but the battery age is 92 days. How is it possible? Is this the case of used battery?

A:Battery age 92 days but the laptop is brand new

The battery was made and first fired up for testing 92 days ago. Laptops do not sell immediately; they are shipped and sit on the shelf for a bit. The critical statistic is not the age in days it is the number of cycles. If the battery has more than a couple cycles on it then I would worry somebody swapped in a used battery.

Not really sure where to put this thread and don't know what's wrong with my machine.
For the past 2 days the Hard Drive never stops whirling and spinning. This is not normal.
Task Manager shows system idle is in the 90's and the computer isn't running anything - Even when there is no browser opened, the HD continues to spin and spin and the laptop gets very hot.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

- Win 7 Home Premium
- Gateway laptop NV47H
- Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB
- Total physical memory 5.74 GB
- Avail physical memory 3.55 GB

- Available Virtual memory 9:30 GB

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

My desktop is a Windows 8.1 computer with a tplink router and the offending instrument is the laptop downstairs with Windows 10. Every 2 or 3 days the laptop can't automatically connect and when I order it to connect it just can't. It sees the connection, but it just can't.

What I have to do is this

netsh int ip reset reset.txt
netsh winsock reset
netsh advfirewall reset
ipconfig /flushdns
restart laptop

and then the laptop has internet again.

It's just inconvenient and makes my blood boil. Is this the way it has to be? Any possible solutions I can try?

A:laptop disconnects from network every 2 or 3 days

Install or reinstall the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site.

A few days ago I had some strange behavior on my laptop, I couldn't open any of my antivirus software that I have, McAffee (which I trash already) and Malwarebytes. Every time I tried to open any of the software mentioned, I got errors windows or blank windows… more less errors everywhere. Windows 7 became very unstable after that, so I decide to do a clean installation, now things are working normal, but at the back of my head I am wondering if this was some type of infection.
I would appreciate if someone could help me to check on this, please.

How can Dell not consider a serious overheating problem with my Inspiron 17 7778 2-in-1 a replacement option. I have less than 40 hours on it have been on the phone with tech support multiple times and it is currently in the "repair" cycle and I have been without my business computer for over 2 weeks while they authorized / sent the return box, entered in the system and diagnosed it. How does one contact someone at Dell with a level of authority to do something other than state that they do not really warrant their product they just give customers the run around.

A:No Warranty for laptop that has been in service for less than 60 days.

I have a 7779 for about a month and so far, no problems.  If it is getting hot, where is it getting hot?  If on the bottom, what area of the bottom?  Do you hear the fan running and is it constant or changing?
Latest Bios?  Did it ever not get hot since you have had it?
My System threw three BSODs the first hour due to a product registration utility, but stopped after the initial problem.
Have you checked your Processor speed/utilization and drive usage to see if it is being overworked?  Anything showing in Task Manger showing high CPU usage?
Any programs you use often?
