Q: Thinkpad P50 only starts after disconnecting both ...

Hey there, after being on the phone with Lenovo representatives in Germany for a couple of times with no succesful solution to my problem, I wondered whether someone in this forum might have an answer to my P50 problem. Model:Thinkpad P50 20EN0008. The problem:At the beginning of August, my P50 would not boot, no vitality signs at all. I removed the battery, tried to push the power button in various sequences ( 60 seconds long ; in alternating time steps, and so on) but nothing helped. So I decided to call Lenovo tech support who said that probably my mainboard needs to be swapped. Next day a Lenovo representative showed up with a new mainboard. However, before replacing the mainboard he checked all RAM sticks and figured out one was broken, being the reason for the dead P50. Thus, he removed the RAM stick and the machine started working again. The P50 continued working for 2 days but eventually showed the same symptoms. I called tech support again and after 2 weeks a new technician showed up, now replacing the whole mainboard. Then, the P50 worked for 2 days but eventually would not boot at all again. Being curious what might be the bug, I thought what both operations had in common and voila, after disconnecting the coin cell battery and the main battery for 3 minutes, the Laptop started again. So I called tech support again, now with the recommendation of updating my bios to the latest version. Having done this, my P50 still does not boot without removing the main battery and disconnecting the coin cell battery. Does anyone here have any idea what might fix my P50? I can make it work but doing the whole procedure every morning is a bit time consuming and exhausting. Thank you very much for your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It looks like one of endless BIOS issues. What BIOS version to you have ? Try to disable Fast Startup in Windows which may be a temporary workaround. Considering the repair history I would return it. There are many basic functionality issues with P series Lenovo is not able to solve because they seem to already lost production competence of workstation machines. They are too focused on cheap consumer laptops and its resulting typical reliability.

I'm a college CS student and I like to have a few screens to do homework on. Windows 7 worked slick. Extra monitors were plug & play. I just got a new laptop running Windows 8.1 and it does not behave the same.
Disregarding any issues with having several monitors, lets focus on using just one. I plug it in to my HDMI port (or, if I booted up with it already plugged in, unplug it from said port) and Windows 8.1 automatically logs me out of my current session. Once
I log back in, every single application I had running (browser, word processor, games, etc.) has been terminated. It looks like I just turned my computer on. Everything I was doing is lost.
It may not be best practices to unplug your additional monitor while the laptop is running... But it should be. If I want to move from my room to the living room and plug into the tv, I should be able to do that, no?
Am I the only one experiencing this issue?

I have to restart the AP or my network adapter which is really annoying when it happens every few minutes. Also I noticed that something similar is going on on my home Wi-Fi, it doesnt disconnect me like in the first case, but it feels like it keeps reconnecting every few minutes (I have difficulties loading a video on youtube while on smartTV its not a problem or on any other device connected to the same network)I tried- uninstalling the driver and installing different one- reinstalling current driver- do this (https://support.lenovo.com/cz/cs/solutions/ht502846)- bunch of other stuff My spec- Lenovo ThinkPad L440- Windows 7 Pro SP1- Wireless driver - Intel(R) Wireless-N 7260 (HW ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_08B2&SUBSYS_C2628086&REV_6B) Thanks in advance Reiter

Hi Reiter,1. Have you tried installing Wi-Fi driver from Intel Website directly?2. Have you tried toggling between Power Plans? (Power Saver to High Performance)?3. Change Wi-Fi Adapter Settingsa. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections, right-click Properties.b. Click Configure

Hello,  a year ago I bough Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 20CD0038MC with Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and also OneLink Pro Dock.  Because Yoga has't own Ethernet adapter I connected cable to OneLink Pro Dock. Unfortunatelly it disconnect cable (and switch to WiFI) many times during each day. Everytime it takes only second and than cable was normally connected, but this destroyed every work which depends on stable connection (e.g. streamed webinars). Sometimes disconnection occurs once per day, sometimes 10x per day.  So I bough also original Lenovo USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter and connect it directly to USB port on Yoga - the same problem. So I decided that OneLink Pro Dock itself is fine and problem has to be in Yoga.  Approx. 2 months ago, disconnection time starts growing and sometimes I spend whole day only on WiFi. Two weeks ago, after last diconnection Ethernet don't get back and now I'm on WiFi only over two weeks.  I checked - Ethernet port on OneLink Pro Dock - both LEDs working and shows some traffic- Devices in Windows 8.1 - there is only wireless adapter (and bluetooth adapter), but in LENOVO support is not any new drivers for Ethernet, only one adding support of wake-on-lan. I installed it anyway. - when I turn off WiFi adapter, I'm without connection - LAN doesn't return- I found new drivers for OneLink Pro Dock, but when I attempt to install it, get error message that system doesn't find any OneLInk Dock :-/ (it shows... Hi guys,I have a laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 model running on Window 10 Pro OS. It is a Core i3-3110M CPU @2.40GHz 8GB RAM 64-bit OS. My issue is :WLAN / WiFi keeps going ON and OFF every now and then. The WiFi once connected keeps connecting and disconnecting every minute and it sometimes take forever to reconnect back. I will need to right-click on the WiFi Symbol at the bottom right and click on 'Troubleshoot problems' to recover from this issue. Once recovered, it disconnects again. Some Observations :The issue could be because of the conflict between the Bluetooth drivers and the WiFi drivers. If Bluetooth is disabled then the WiFi works correctly. There will be no problems regarding the WiFi getting disconnected. These are the following details of the hardwares and their respective driver versions. Network : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless -N 2230Driver Version : 15.18.0.1Driver Date : 30-04-2015  Bluetooth : Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)Driver Version : 18.1.1525.1445Driver Date : 18-06-2015 I have no idea why these two are causing this issue, but I really need to fix this. And it has been atleast a year since I bought this laptop and it has been showing this problem since 4 - 5 months back. Please let me know if there is a work around for this. If not atleast I hope the above information might help fixing the issue. If there is any additional information that is needed from me, please leave a m... Read more

Hello! This has been happening for the past few weeks, and the only solution I've found so far is restarting the laptop. When I disconnect from my monitors and take my laptop with me to meetings (which is several times per day), I lose my physical mouse (on the laptop, not an additional mouse). The pad just doesn't respond. I am forced to use the touch screen to do everything. I want to use my mouse, and I used to be able to. My little red button mouse also doesn't work. I've already confirmed that I'm still in Desktop mode, not in Tablet mode. Using Windows 10 Pro

As strange as it sounds, I have a 3 year old IBM T20 laptop running XP Pro that has decided that it only wants to startup every 4th day!

About 4 weeks ago, it was in hibernate mode and didn't wake up normally when I opened the laptop. This happened before, but pressing and holding the power button started it up. This time nothing except a flash of the hard disk light.

The charger and batteries are fine and fully charged. I have tried everything I can think of including removing the HD, PCMCIA cards, DVD drive, memory expansion cards and the CMOS battery.
Still wouldn't startup. Put everything back together and set it aside checking to see if it would start everyday. 4 days later it started up normally. I ran a full System Tools test suite on the hardware and HD with no problems found. I shut down and then restarted with no problem, but let it sit for 30 minutes and it won't restart for another 4 days. This has happened 5 times now and I am at a loss for a logical reason.

When it does startup, everything functions normally, it restarts with no problem, but if I shutdown or hibernate - it doesn't startup the next time.

I also used the system restore and went back two months to a clean copy. Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem.

I thought it was probably the HD or the CMOS battery, but the HD test fine and the CMOS battery still keeps the date/time correctly.

The CMOS version is not the latest (version 1.03) ,but XP is current as of 45 days ag... Read more

Hi guys, I've got a Thinkpad S1 Yoga 8GB i5 with a standard HDD 500GB and what I've notice is:one barely notices that the HDD is spinning when starting up or when left idle after booting.I can move the laptop around and the HDD is always as quiet. I bought another Thinkpad S1 Yoga 4GB i3 with the same standard HDD 500GB and I'm noticing the following differences, so wondering if there's some kind of a problem with that hard drive? As soon as you power it up the HDD starts spinning and it's quite loud (compared to the laptop above, ie, it's not really loud as such, but compared to my 1st one you can definately notice that it's spinning whereas the other one is almost always quiet). It keeps continuously spinning once it's booted up, even when idle (and even though the task manager and resource monitor doesn't indicate anything using the disk, it's reported as 0% usage a lot of times)then when I move the laptop the most minimum, the HDD stops spinning and then starts again, so if I'm using it in on the move, you can notice that the HDD is continuously stopping and then starting, which seems quite weird to me. I had never noticed that before. I've tried Win 7 pro, Win 8.1 pro and Win 10 pro and it's happening in all of them. The Lenovo diagnostics for that HDD don't report any problem either.... Any idea if the 2nd HDD is behaving correctly? or anything I could change to make it work like my 1st laptop? Thank you!

Hi,I have one ThinkPad E330 (latest BIOS), Windows 8.1  that behaves very strange: 1. If I perform a console shutdown, at next reboot starts booting sequence from HDD (this is BIOS Boot order)2. If I perform a remote shutdown (using "shutdown.exe -s -t 1" command from an RDP session) then at next boot the boot process starts Intel PXE boot and crash because there is a boot server in the network for some special ARM devices that delivers an non compatible image to the ThinkPad architecture... What is wrong with the E330 - it simply does not respect the BIOS settings after remote shutdown. How can I make it respect the BIOS settings even when I perform a remote shutdown? BIOS version: H3ET76WW(1.13) 2016-04-15Model: Edge E330 (ThinkPad) - Type 3354Windows: 8.1 Pro N, [Version 6.3.9600]LAN: Realtek PCIe GBE

Basically what the title says. I have a new computer which I spent about 1300 dollars on. I built it myself and everything ran fine for about 6 months until I tried to overclock it. The bios and overclocking are pretty ***** proof since the motherboard is fairly new. You literally hit one button from normal to overclock. Since then when I boot the computer up the computer comes on for about 3 seconds, the monitor doesn't react at all, then it shuts itself off for another 3 seconds then boots up normally. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? I've seen some similar cases on here but they aren't exactly the same.

When i press the start button, it turns on for a moment, then shuts down and starts beeping. I have counted 8 continuous beeps, then a pause, then another 8 beeps, and so on. What is happening?
Also, my model is a Dell inspiron 15 5000 series.
Thanks in advance.

A:My laptop starts beeping when turning it on, but never properly starts

The system isn't detecting the display panel.
If the system is under warranty, call Dell. If not,
Check the connection between the display cable and mainboard.  If it's loose, reconnect it.
If there's evident damage to the cable, and it's a non-touch model, replace the display harness.
If it's a touch or tablet screen, the cable isn't separately replaceable.  In that case, the screen assembly needs to be replaced.
If that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard is the faulty part and will need to be replaced.
If you need a reference to the service manual, please post the full model number (i.e., Inspiron 5521, etc.).

Hi -

I'm a beginner so bear with me please. I have a Sony Vaio Desktop which is probably 4 or 5 years old. It has Win XP. Last night I tried to do something I wasn't capable of - I went into the registry and I crashed the computer. I lost everything. This morning. I loaded my back up system disks and application disks. No problem. Then I started loading my own software and a few off the web like WordPerfect, Mozilla Firefox, AVG, etc. The last thing that I loaded was AVG anti-virus and I swear that before the computer went blank AVG said something about detecting a virus. Now the machine can't be loaded. It loads the first couple of screens that say Sony and then Microsoft XP (it gives the beep) and then the computer and monitor shut down. About 30 seconds later they power up and start the process of trying to sign on again. If it's a virus then I can't get on the computer to do anything about it. I tried to get in safe mode with no luck but I really don't know what I'm doing there. I have a call in for my computer expert friend, but he's no where to be found. I know the answer may require some complicated manuevers.

Any help that you can suggest is greatly appreciated. I use the computer for personal use and for volunteer work that I do. I really wish I had the bucks to just by a new one. Best Buy's interest is just too high.

Thank you
Dawn

I was trying to remove Windows Defender this morning as I'm running MS Security Essentials. I thought the two programs might be conflicting with each other. MsMpEng.exe was using over 260K of physical RAM which I thought was excessive. At one point I suspended the MsMpEng.exe process while in Resource Monitor. My system immediately crashed. After rebooting, I discovered that I couldn't start Windows (7) again.

Thinking that I damaged one or more critical system files when I suspended MsMpEng.exe, I booted to Safe Mode with networking and restored Windows using a system restore point from yesterday. I was able to log into my user account after the system restored. Everything worked fine. However, my relief was short-lived: I wasn't able to log in again to my user account after re-booting without waiting fifteen minutes or longer. There are no earlier restore points I can use. Starting with the last known good configuration didn't work. I tried rebooting and running Startup repair. That didn't work either. The message it gave was that my problem booting was probably due to a change in configuration.

Shortly before the crash I ran Malware Anti-Malware Bytes and AdwCleaner. All instances of malware and adware were removed. After the crash I ran MS Security Essentials. No viruses were found.

Please advise if I need to upload a system configuration file, and if so, what program I can use to capture it to a file. I haven't done this for a while since before today, my system has b... Read more

Well you can't really 'remove' windows defender per se, but you can disable it. Also, windows defender is not an antivirus, but anti spyware. Essentials is anti virus.

1) open windows defender

2) Click Tools, and then click Options.

3) Click Administrator, select or clear the Use this program check box, and then click Save. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

also uninstall essentials after this. See if there's any improvement.

A friend of my wife that works with her called and said her computer won't turn on, I looked and this is what it is doing.
You turn it on and the green light on the tower comes on and you can hear it starting up the green light on the monitor is on the key board lite is not. nothing ever comes up on the screen because you can listen to it and it starts then I think before it can really do anytning it sounds light it shuts itself off, then right away it starts up, then shuts down, then you can hear it start, then you can hear it shut itself down, you can hear it doing this and will keep doing it till you shut it down by the tower, could a cd being stuck in the cd unit make it do that or any idea's?? pleae help this lady needs it for her business, Thanks

Also if it makes a difference--you can get I think it is a white box with red trim on it you can get it on the monitor screen and it says something like saving power 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,and counts down and then goes to sleep

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hello, We have a problem with 2 laptops (ThinkPad X270) that "freeze" on the LENOVO logo when using Lenovo Ultra Dock with monitor Dell UZ2715H.Display Dell is plugged by Display port ports and one USB 3.0 (9 pin - used for display integrated webcam) connected to ThinkPad dock. When notebook turned ON with connected USB 3.0, computer freeze on LENOVO logo (To interrupt normal startup, press Enter) and work only when USB 3.0 disconected, or turned OFF and again Turned ON. Firmware on Dock is 2.33.000 Any suggestion?

I am just going to guess that computer is trying to boot via USB, so you might try changing the boot order in the BIOS so that Windows Boot Manager or the HD is first.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

X1 Carbon 6th Gen - (Type 20KH, 20KG) Laptop (ThinkPad) on ThinkPad Pro Dock.  I have a secondary display (connected with DisplayPort).  When the battery is charging, the secondary display works properly.  As soon as the battery is fully charged (100%), the secondary display disconnects and goes black (no signal detected).  The power is still on the the display.  The only way to get the secondary display to reconnect is to unplug the power supply from the dock, then plug it in again.  Has anyone else experienced this?

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Hallo!

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yours,

Kyklopes

That T-20 is pretty long in the tooth. I suspect your optical drive either needs cleaning, or is worn beyond repair.
Did you try the CD in another drive as a double check?

I contacted Lenovol support and they send me a replacement unit. The the replacement unit has the same problem. Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.  I need to plug in the power adapter for both docking station and notebook.  Does anybody have similiar problem?

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)
