How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Q: How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ago (when I know the icon was showing) but this has not made the icon re-appear ?

I've also disconnected the External Drive, switched everything off, and then reconnected and switched it back on again, this hasn’t made any difference.

I've also right clicked on my K Drive and gone to properties where there is a customise tab that has a picture option which reads "Choose a file to show on this folder icon" . . . I've tried using this function but again it has no effect ?

All in all . . I'm totally baffled and a little frustrated . . I had thought this would be a simple little glitch to fix . . . . Any help or advice would be very very much appreciated . .

Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Also just spotted an obsolete thread on this site where someone suggested:-

"Un-install the driver while the external drive is connected and then rebooted and let windows reinstall - everything should go back to normal when Windows re-discovered the drive".

I don't know if this might cure my problem ? . . but unfortunately I do not know how to uninstall a driver ?

Greetings. I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desk external hard drive.

I used to be able to plug it into my laptop, and voila it automatically backed up all my files - and only those that were added or changed.

I gave my laptop a fresh load of Windows 7, and now I can't find the driver disk (if I had one) for the FreeAgent. In any event, now I have to back up manually, and click and paste entire folders (rather than just files that had changed). And I'll be darned if I can find a solution on Seagate's website.

I'd like to get back to the happy place where the FreeAgent detects new or changed files on my laptop, and automatically backs those up.

Suggestions please?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and not super tech-savvy, so my apologies if this is a newbie type of question. Here's my scenario:

I just purchased a Seagate Backup Plus external hard drive with 2TB of storage capacity. The box states that you can "use between Windows and Mac". However, I want to make sure I do this right before I do anything with it. In the past I've had various issues with this actually being true.

I need to be able to read and write data amongst three computers, 2 macs and 1 PC. I'm going to be going to a recording studio (mac 1) and asking for him to make a copy of the stuff we edit together and put the copy on this hard drive. Then, I'm going to be working with this data on two different computers. My home base computer is a PC (PC 1). However, I also work on the road a lot. The computer I work with on the road is a mac book pro (mac 2). I will need to be able to read and write amongst all three of these computers.

How do I make sure that I can do that?

Thanks,

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected. I appreciate any help you can give.

The icon is no longer displaying...the icon itself is on the drive, but i can't figure out how to make it show up under "my computer"...the icon itself, not the drive. I've gone through "properties"-"customize", to avail. I've tried the tutorials about restoring icons, but no luck.

I am looking at external drives for making system backups and additional storage. The storage part and copying data files are easy, but the backup/restore side of the equation for Windows XP is harder.

Let's assume that I made a full (XP, registry, everything) backup of my C: drive onto the external drive and my internal drive crashed. I install a new drive.

Would I need to install XP and all of my software onto the new drive first in order to run the restore software? If I did that, then did a file-by-file restore of both data and software files from the external drive, would there be problems?

I know software installs set up shop all over the place in Windows, including the registry and other places. Am I better off installing all of my software from scratch and restoring data files only?

Would I be able to restore a FAT32 file-by-file backup to a new NTFS drive? I know an image backup has to go to a like file system.

Installing all of the apps could take days, but a complete restore could be done in a few hours. Any thoughts?

A:XP Backup/Restore using an external drive

Can't answer that without knowing what you used to make the image file of "C" drive. If Ghost or Acronis True Image , you need to make a rescue boot disk after installing the program (Ghost the install cd is one) and then you put in a new hard drive and simply restore the image file to it. NT Backup no you have to install XP first before restoring the image file.

I have multiple computers that I want to backup - a Windows 2000 computer, a Windows XP computer, and a Windows 7 computer. I have one external hard drive that I want to use for all 3 computers.

I would like to have 3 subdirectories on the external hard drive - one subdirectory for each computer's backups. I am going to use a third-party backup program for the Windows 2000 and XP machines, and I know that it can backup to a subdirectory on an external drive.

But I'm thinking about using Backup and Restore to backup my Windows 7 machine. Is it possible to tell Backup and Restore to store its backups within a subdirectory on the external drive, so that it doesn't affect the Windows 2000 and XP subdirectories? Or will it take over the entire external hard drive?

A:Can Backup and Restore save to a subdirectory on an external drive?

Hi Delerious, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You get partly what you want to using native tools, Windows Backup & Restore creates independent folders for each computer using computer name. I just reinstalled Windows to this laptop today, the highlighted folders were created by system when doing initial backup after everything was installed.

You can't put these main folders, backup and image, into another folder. System creates them and does not let you to modify the path. Backup folders are located on root and named with PC's actual name, system images are located in image folder's subfolders with PC name.

Creating an image backup of your entire hdd is a wise thing to do. Some time in the future your hdd will become unusable. Sometime in the future
your OS will become unusable. How often you create an image backup of your hdd or just your personal/ business files is dependent on how important your files are.
Another option.....You can clone your hdd to another hdd of the same size or larger.

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

I'm having trouble getting Windows 7 x86 RC Build 7100 to recognize my Seagate 3.5" External Hard Drive 500GB (Model ST305004EXA101-RK). It is connected through a USB 2.0 port on my Asus K8V SE Motherboard - running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM.

Currently, this hard drive when connected appears in Device and Printers as as "Device" named Desktop. Right Click -> Properties shows that it is a storage device.

Device Manager recognizes it as a Disk Drive and calls it a Seagate Desktop USB Device - no conflicts.

Under Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management the drive appears as Disk 1 - Basic and Online statuses. If I try and assign it a drive letter, I get the following "The operation failed to complete becasue the Disk Managment Console view is out of date. Please refresh the console view..."

Only one conflict exists in Device Manager - I have one Unknown Device under USB Controllers. When viewing that device, it gives me a Code 43 error.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex Desk backup, which came preloaded with a Memeo backup program.
Recently I keep getting messages saying, "Failed to back up (various different files)" and "Failed to back up current session." One other message said "No backup plan found." When I watched what was being backed up, I noticed that the backup stalled when it tried to back up 00000002.sol (0 kb).
I have no clue what to do at this point, as I'm apparently going with no further backups. I have an old WD drive, but it's too small and too full already.
Would it be possible to reformat the extermal Seagate drive and do a complete backup from scratch?
I have a program by 2BrightSparks called SyncBackFree that I could put on the reformatted drive.
If that's not an option, and there's no way to get the Seagate going again, then I'm about to decide to just buy a new external drive and start from scratch with whatever backup program it comes with.
If anyone has any recommendations for a new drive and/or backup software, I'd appreciate it.

A:Seagate drive won't backup for reasons unknown.

You certainly don't need to use any of the supplied backup software. Yes, you could reformat the drive and start over.

There are a bunch of applications that can do an ordinary backup, most of them free.

Are you trying to back up just your personal data or are you also trying to backup your Windows installation?

If the latter, the most often recommended application on this forum is Macrium Reflect Free Edition.

If the former, you can choose from many, including FreeFileSync, Allway Sync, Folder Clone, Syncback, and others.

I suspect Sync Back Free, which you have, is for data backup, not Windows backup. I haven't used it, but it may work very well and I'd certainly give it a try. If not, try one of the other choices above. They all work in a very similar fashion---choose the one that is easiest for you to understand and that seems to work reliably after a few test runs.

Hello to all you smart/clever people out there;
My problem started as: My XP SP3 recyling icon howed full but when I opened it to see what was in it, it showed empty (nothing). From the icon it showed 41 files.
I deleted the contents but I did not realise or know that "my computer" and "my documents" folders on drive C were in the recyle bin I had deleted. A total of about 11 000 files - 30Gb.

As I had a saved version on my external "Seagate FreeAgent" hard drive I tried to restore these files for the first time ever. It was more difficult than I thought, I was unable to do so. The instructions only tell of dragging the respective file to the location wanted, but it does not work.

I have all the files from the external drive shown on the PC and load and transfer files that way. I am not allowed to to use the safe disconnection feature of the USB, getting the message to wait until later for disconnection so I leave it permanently connected.

My question for help is: how can I restore the two folders and and their files in a simple procedure.

Thanks to all helpers

A:unable to restore from external "freeagent" backup drive

You can't delete the My Computer icon or send it to the Recycle Bin. My Computer has everything on your computer under it, including the protected Windows System files, so it will not let you delete it. You may have deleted the My Documents files, but this too has protected system files that won't let you delete it. If you go to C:\Documents and Settings\[username} is there a My Documents folder there? If so, you can open it up and copy the contents of the My Documents folder in your backup, and paste it into the My Documents folder under your user name.

Do you have any power settings for USB devices set in your Advanced Power Settings... Try shutting off the USB selective suspend setting.

There is also a setting for Hard Drives, you can put them on a timer. You might want to check yours, see if it is set to a low value, if it is, increase it to 30 minutes or so.

OK, So i have an 1.5 External seagate drive that up until now has been running great, the main thing i keep on it is media which i access through a USB 2 connection. as of 2 days ago the drive has been acting funny in the middle of a playback it starts seeking or searching which is the best way that i can describe this. basically the media locks for a second the drive clicks like its searching and then the media restarts a few seconds later. The audio generally keeps going but the video hags during this time. I ran SEAtools looking for drive errors, defraged it, and ran a virus check on the drive to see if maybe i picked up a bug, nothing, i have also updated all my video and audio drivers, and by the time you read this probably the drives drivers also.

Any Ideas?

A:External Seagate drive keeps seeking

Kind of sounds like it might be indexing or something, is the indexing service disabled for the drive?

Hello forum, my Seagate external hard drive which i thought had burnt actually works. But there is a problem, I remember it used to have all its lights shining before, at least sometimes. Also it makes noises sometimes and sometimes it does not. So I thought it got spoilt because when i used to plug it there were no lights and no sound.

Now i still get the same reaction but i miraculously can access the files, so it did not burn right?

Also i have some ''backups'' maybe two but there are some files which are mixed with the original files from the Seagate external hard drive, so i dont know 1) if i should remove anything or place it somewhere else 2) if removing or deleting any files will affect anything in the backups or in the external hard drive. Some files are mixed with the external hard drive files so i dont know how to separate them

Also, i dont know what the external hard drive files do, and what to do if i ever accidentally delete them. I do not remember having a manual for it, maybe i lost it, but i dont have it now also i do not have the box...So i do not know which model it is

Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

I use W7 Home Premium and would like to make a backup of my entire system. I will use the image method and the combination of my C and D discs are about 125GB total. It appears to me that this Seagate will do the job, however, I would like some opinions before I purchase it. Thanks

A:Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

My seagate expansion desktop external drive seems to be dying. Its only a year old but i've filled it upto 90% of its capacity and that is when the problem started. Drive will show in my computer, disk management and even folders/files are visible/accessible but somehow i cant copy them. If i try copying, i'm slapped with extremely slow transfer speeds as below. Besides that it wont read some of the files so i have to skip them

I have even tried recovery programs and all of them recognized the drive properly but couldnt recover anything. I'm on win7 x64 and I feel there is a problem with the usb enclosure and so i want to pry it open and connect to the computer just like an internal drive. Can i do that without voiding the warranty?

I have recently had a new desktop PC. Prior to that I had a laptop where Seagate external drive was permanently connected via a USB port. I was running Win7, using FF browser and WLM.
With the new pc if I leave Seagate connected I can't boot up - the screen stops at BIOS. Everything seems to be running properly as long as I don't keep the external hard drive connected until boot up is complete.
What can I do so that I don't have to keep disconnecting Seagate each time I shut down?

Hope someone can help and that the solution is an easy one. Thanks.

Hello,
When attempting to back up files to my new external drive, the drive was not recognized by my computer. After reading other threads, I was able to assign a drive letter via disk management and run a backup. My question is, do I need to go thru this exercise EVERY time I plug in the external drive via the USB? Is there a way to make the drive map permanent? I had to do this again today to see the external drive with a drive letter via Start menu /Computer

A:Seagate 2TB external drive not recognized

When you buy a brand new drive from the shelf, there is no partition or partition letter on the drive. That you have to assign once and it will be good for the life of the drive (unless you change it later).

It sounds like the external harddrive has died - do you have copies of the files on your computer as well?

Assuming the drive is dead and it is not an issue with the USB connection, it is possible to get the files off of the harddrive though companies that provide such services often charge a high price.

I purchased a Seagate 1Tb external drive that came with "Seagate Dashboard" software to manage back-ups. What I would like to do is create 2 500Gb partitions and use my Acronis software to make mirror images of both my desktop and laptop. Is this do-able? Would it be advisable to delete the "Seagate Dashboard"?

Thanks for any advice.

A:Format Seagate external drive

Simply just plug it in and do a format. It took you longer to ask how to do this, than it would to have just plugged the drive in and right click on it after it loads in Windows Explorer, and choose "Format".

That is, I can allocate it one through drive management but it still doesn't show next switch on in My Computer, so I must go in an allocate it one. Otherwise it works fine. Bit tedious after a while.

Do I have to reformat it completely to regain auto allocation of a letter?

Used to be fine, but not now. A USB 3.0 Toshiba 500 gig external drive (sealed unit) doesn't have this problem.

Thnx

A:Seagate USB 3.0 backup unit doesn't get a drive letter

Did any software come with the drive? I had a couple of Seagate FreeAgent USB 2.0 externals and I found a download link on Seagate's site for the utility software. It may hold the drive letter if you set it to never spin down.

I recently obtained a new outboard drive off a friend for 10$ lol good deal right...Well I plug her in and format it no problem also note I plugged it into a VM not my host machine to format it completely using Easus Partition Master. It seems as though something got through and that would be a rootkit, but I'm not sure so here are the logs. I should have DBAN'D the drive but instead I figured it would take to long given the size of the drive. So I decided not to zero write the drive out. I really need help if it is a rootkit or is this just HMPA throwing a false positive somehow. I'm not exactly sure how HMPA exploit mitigation works whether it embeds itself into the kernel or what. So if I am kitted I need help removing it. Drive L is the suspected drive that is kitted but I definitely need help on the steps to take to get rid of the rootkit if it is kitted. Thanks for any response. And

I purchased a Western Digital 250gb external hard drive (My Passport Essential I think) a few years back with the idea that I would use it as a backup to my main computer and/or an alternative hard drive storage for my music. But I have been sadly deceived and luckily I have only used it as a sync/temporary access drive when I needed to print stuff away from home.

Well the time has come to upgrade to a new computer (with more space and speed etc than current) and I have been trying to find ways to transfer my existing files across.

In my search, I have stumbled across many forums/websites that advise the WD external hdd and the preinstalled software (WD Sync/Dmailer Sync whichever it is now) is not suitable as a backup drive and that if the computer is erased and at any point resync'ed, the data on the external hdd will be deleted. Also many people advise they have lost files as a result of computer crashes etc and cannot retrieve the files from either their WD hdd or their computer. All of which has prompted me to start this thread.

Can anyone please tell me, is there a way to...
1. Transfer my files to my new computer using the WD external hdd? NB. Not as important as I have alternative methods/may start another thread.

2. Turn the WD hdd into a back up drive without purchasing the Dmailer Backup software? (NB. I am not opposed to buying new software but I feel I have been "done" by a highstreet (actually retail park) computer store and I don't par... Read more

I have been using a Seagate Expansion 2TB external drive plugged into my ASUS RT-N56U router streaming movies to my WD TV Live. Recently movie streaming stopped working. I tried connecting the drive to my laptop and recorded what happened below.
Plugged power cable into Seagate 2TB drive. After about 10s plugged USB cable into Windows 7 laptop.
Could not see the drive in File Manager, Device Manager or Disk Management.
After a while the system hung however this was resolved by unplugging the power cable from the Seagate 2TB drive.
With the USB cable still connected to the laptop, I plugged in the power cable back into the Seagate 2TB drive.
This time I could see the drive in File Manager, Device Manager or Disk Management.
Windows popped up a window and asked me if I wanted to fix the drive which I selected "Scan & fix" and the scan completed in about 10mins but nothing was reported.
In File Manager I could see the first level directory structure but no other sub directories or files could be found.
I also ran testdisk which appeared to have found some read errors but no partitions were found.
I have attached a file which includes all the relevant screenshots.

I would really like to recover the files on the drive and any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Seagate 2TB external drive - cannot find any partitions

Download and run MiniTools Partition Wizard Home Edition 8.1.1 Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online

Right Click on your external drive volume and click on Check File System

In the ensuing dialog box, select Check and Fix detected errors and Start.

Let it complete.

Close Partition Wizard, shut down your computer and remove your external HDD.

Boot your computer and connect your external HDD.

Hope that resolves your problem. ( This is what I did when only one DVD ISO folder showed up on my 1 TB drive. I had umpteen BD ISOs and the drive was almost full. After running Partition Wizard File System check, I got back all the ISOs. If I remember correctly Windows Disk Check did not do anything.)

EDIT: If PW File System check alone does not resolve the problem, follow it up with Windows disk check - fix errors. Again if I remember right it did a good job this time stitching together the fragments and restoring to relevant files.
