Won't delete .dll files and volume is WACK!

Q: Won't delete .dll files and volume is WACK!

Hi guys! For a while now, the volume on certain websites has been messed up for me and I've tried everything and have come to a conclusion that maybe something's wrong, so I did a virus scan and then all of a sudden this message from McAffee started popping up:

The file C:/System Volume Information\_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B\RP249\A0048079.dll could not be cleaned. Please delete the infected file.

I couldn't find the file, but if it's infected I need to delete it, maybe that is what is causing problems. I honestly don't know. Here is my HJT log.

Preferred Solution: Won't delete .dll files and volume is WACK!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have some files leftover from when I was trying to use ROXIO RETROSPECT XPRESS to backup my entire hard drive. It never really worked out for me. It never fully backed up and I continued to have problems with it so I decided to delete all the files manually. I had a difficult time at first, until I realized that you had to right-click go to propertiesand uncheck "read only" and then you could delete the files. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/heavyjavadrinker/internet/read-only-not-work.jpgHowever, this will not work on the System Volume Information folder. When I click on the "read only" box and hit apply and then ok and then reopen again it is checked again. This on a partition called "back ups" on an Iomega 1TB Network drive and I don't want to delete anything else, just this 3 Gigabytes of data I don't need anymore. Does anyone knowhow to delete these files?http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/heavyjavadrinker/internet/more-contents-of-folder.jpghttp://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/heavyjavadrinker/internet/contents-of.jpg

A:How to delete System Volume files on backup drive

You can simply disable system restore on that drive and the contents of the SVI folder will be deleted. Or you can take ownership of the folder and then delete it (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/). Either way, the folder may reappear - but if system restore is disabled it won't contain any files so you needn't worry about it.

Okay, so I wanted to dual boot two operating systems so I shrunk my main partition in half but didn't format the new partition. Now, I want to delete it or format it but it doesn't work, instead gives me this annoying error message "The system cannot find the file specified". How can it not find the file specified? It's 170 GIGABYTES. Also, it doesn't have a name, so is that the reason? I can't find it in "My computer", so is that why? It says underneath that it's "Healthy", and a "Simple Volume". Please get back to me ASAP.

A:Cannot delete volume!

Click Start, type Disk Management and press Enter.
Right click on the 170GB partition you created and select Format.

That will assign a drive letter to it once the format is complete.
A quick format should be sufficient.

I'm trying to delete a volume so I can extend a partition. However the option to delete volume in disk management is grayed out. How do I fix this?

Here you can see I can't delete the E: partition

A:Unable to delete volume

Hi there, you cant delete this partition because its a system partition and its marked as Active.
Just next to the E:\ partition, there is some unallocated space. You can right click on the partition you want to extend and then click Extend Volume.

I recently changed hardware on my pc. I did not uninstall or change anything about my hard drive, but when using it in the new pc, it kept telling me to activate windows. This was strange, never happened to me before so why now. So i go through so much
trouble trying to fix it and nothing worked. Even in settings under activation blah blah, it still wouldn't let me activate because "the servers were down". ok. So i call Microsoft support, and he keeps trying to get me to repurchase windows 10.
No. Bad customer service  rep. He did not help at all just made me do everything i already did and  when it said the servers were down, he told me its because i don't have a legit license. I downloaded windows 10 when it was free in 2016 or whenever.
So i never got a product key. So I used to windows 10 installer tool and it seemed to work, the watermark was gone. but later that day when i came home it was back. Then i tried the activation again and it worked. This was incredibly frustrating and annoying.
so i wanted to leave negative feedback to windows/microsoft. But i dont have the feedback hub, so i go to windows store and try to search bnut the search function doesnt work. I dont know why i thought any other windows app would be easy to use after everything
i just experienced. I have no question. This isnt about windows 8. This is the only place i found to try to tell microsoft anything. so tedious and annoying. yuck.

Hi. This is gonna sound odd but every time I move my mouse real fast it goes out of control. If I don't move the mouse the cursor stays but with one little twitch and it is half-way across the screen again. This also tends to happen in Linux but Win2k is the worst. If I don't move it for about 3 seconds it goes back to normal until I move it fast again. And I am not even moving it that fast!!! Please help. Thank you.

Well I did an upgrade to vista from XP (yes i know thats my first mistake LOL). In XP I had several GB of data in the system volume information folder. I'm trying to get rid of it now and i cant. I've tried to turn off system restore in vista but the old files from XP will not delete. Ive also tried physically deleting them but I can't. How do i do it?

A:can't delete old XP system volume information

Hi David

I believe this procedure has a chance of working in Vista (it was originated for XP) -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531/

My other instinct would be to try any of these procedures in Safe Mode, logged on as Administrator. Gaining ownership of a folder basically requires you to be able to get to the permissions tabs (the "Security" tab for the folder's "Properties").

System Restore in Vista is quite different than in XP, as it relies on a service called "Volume Shadow Copy" to create it's 'snapshots'. But what you have in trying to delete the XP leftovers is a fairly straightforward "gain ownership" situation.

Let us know if you run into any troubles along the way.

I'm just wondering why I can't delete the "System Volume Information". Yet isn't it that you can easily delete these folder by just unchecking the hide button on the file option.

I've tried opening the folder by using "cacls" on CMD. All folders and files are easily remove except for one file name "change.log". This "change.log" bothers me a lot, upon accessing the file I started to notice that it increase it file size by 1b/second.

Can anyone have suggestions on how could I remove this folder? This may seemed new but this thing bothers me a lot and now I suspected this folder a reason why my computers' network and performance are malfunctioning.

A:How to Delete: System Volume Information

Have you tried just turning off system restore?

That should delete all the contents of the folder, including the change log

Btw, that file should not be effecting anything on your system.

If you deleted the files in SVI that file should have been deleted too.

Is it only the change file in the most recent restore point you are having trouble deleting?

I had an additional Windows installation for testing purposes, on a different partition and now I want to delete everything associated with it because I need some free space.

Although I managed to take ownership and delete the Windows folder and few others, I can't delete System Volume Information and the pagefile.sys file.

System Volume Information - I can't get "ownership" of the files in the directory. Although I'm listed as an "owner" of the directory with "full control", when I check "Replace owner on subcontainer and objectes" I get "Access is denied" and then "Stopping propagation of the owner leads to an inconsistent state..." I think I came across this before, but I have no idea what to do. I also get "access denied" when I try to change the read-only attribute of the directory.

pagefile.sys - when I right click on it, the security tab says "The requested security information is wither unavailable or can't be displayed"

note: I can't format the partition

Any ideas? Thanks!

When I first bought my 1TB Iomega Network Drive, I tried to do a copy or clone or something of my entire hard-drive. It didn't work out well, because I was doing it wirelessly and about half-way through every time, it crashed. I could never get it to finish. I went through and tried to delete all the files in the folder I saved them into (called backups) and was able to delete nearly everything (some things I had to right-click and go to properties and uncheck "Read-Only" to make it go away) but for some reason I cannot get rid of the folder leftover called "System Volume Information." I tried unchecking "Read-Only," but it doesn't seem to help. I tried also using a program that allows you to "Take Ownership," but that doesn't help either. Please see the photos and the contents of the folder:<a href="http://s167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/heavyjavadrinker/internet/?action=view&amp;current=3rd-folder.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/heavyjavadrinker/internet/3rd-folder.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I am trying to clean up a messy disk configuration by deleting two volumes from a disk and then extending the C: drive to occupy the entire disk.
I have deleted the first volume successfully but when I try to delete Vol E I get the error message that "The partition Vol E (E:) Simple Volume is currently in use."

At one stage there was music and video on there but that is long gone.

I can't figure out what is trying to use Vol E. How do I go about tracking down what is looking at it?

Any guidance would be useful.

A:Cannot delete volume in disk management. The partition is in use...

You're looking to delete it anyway, and I get the impression you've emptied that volume to add it to C.
So, don't worry about what may be trying to use it.

Just force the deletion, and go about with what you want to do.

Is it possible??? Please help me out.

A:Delete a LOGICAL PARTITION to increase volume of C drive.

Hi Joe and welcome to Seven Forums.

The built in Disk Management might be able to do exactly what you want depending on where the 19.5GB partition is located in relation to the C: partition.

How To Access Disk Management in Windows 7

If the 19.5 partition is immediately to the right of the C: partition ( in other words, if the hard drive is set up as C: | 19.5 | 39 | 39 | 107 ) you could format or shrink the 19.5 partition changing it to unallocated space. Then the C: partition could then be extended to incorporate the unallocated space. It's a somewhat complicated process.

Resize a partition in Vista/Windows 7

Or you could use a different free utility called MiniTool Partition Wizard to do the same thing with a lot less hassle and without worrying about where the 19.5 partition is in relation to the C: partition. This tutorial shows exactly how to extend the C: partition.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 Series Laptop with Windows 8.1. While purchasing I asked for partitions to be created on it. They created 3 partitions C, D and E drives.

Then I wanted to install Ubuntu so I created space on C drive by shrinking the volume. This shrunk my C Drive.

After that I wanted to install Ubuntu. There was an option to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. So I thought to upgrade to Windows 10 and then install Ubuntu. I did the upgrade to Windows 10 but forgot to reclaim the unallocated space back to C drive. So after Windows 10 installation, I have this drives. And now I am not able to allocate the unallcoated space to C drive since there is now a recovery partition present between C drive and the unallocated space. And I am also running out of space on C drive.

How is it possible to reclaim space on C Drive by deleting/ shifting the recovery partition and extending the C Drive to claim the unallocated space. And considering the partitions that I have, which drive should I try installing Ubuntu? I want C drive to contain some space , since I need to install programs / games in C drive. Also many software nowadays, dont ask for an install location. but install directly to C drive.

Could someone please help me out?

Maybe the solution is to plug the HD into a Windows XP system computer and delete these in XP which can be done, and then plug them into a Win7 computer...or can this be done similar to what XP is capable of?

A:How to delete recycle bin and system volume information folders

They will be automatically re-created unless you make other changes so deleting them is pointless.

its nearly the same problem as this thread Virus - Access denied - H:\system volume information

i have files laying on the hdd but i cant remove them. it tried reformatting but using roguekiller to fix shortcuts only brings them back. and i think this is what makes the desktop all twitchy.
clean reinstall didnt help.

its the same problem as being epileptic. its not fun. and may i add, done clean reinstall "deleting partition reformatting partition", and same thing happens after a while when i done reinstalling.
it has even happened during gaming. "oh lets go join a game - nope, shutdown time!!!:S"

is there a easy option? - like program start from cd\dvd and format the whole disk so that it nearly new?

A:System Volume Information and $RECYCLE.BIN wont delete

think i fixed it by doing normal format instead of quick format. if recycle bin and system volume information shows automatically if "show protected systems file" is unchecked i think thats the fix to this and its not a virus its just some misscalculation to backup gone wrong.

this is on a windows 2000 server machine.
2 Scsi drives.
The 2nd scsi drive is a 13 gig drive, and when i go into it and select all and properties to see the total amount of the files size, i get a total of 2.5 gigs. Now i have the option to show all hidden and even system files, so everything should be showing. When i look at teh free space left, it says theres only 1.5 gigs left. I'm losing 9 gigs somehow and i don't know where? The other drive is reading the free disk space fine, but this one has me worried.
I've ran scandisk, defrag, 2 anti-virus programs and still nothing.
Has anyone delt with any of this??

Couldn?t delete folders: ?$RECYCLE.BIN? and ?System Volume Information? ,

I wanted to delete two folders from my external hard drive but sounds not to work (attached)

What might be the issue?

How to delete them?

Thank you

A:Couldn’t delete folders: “$RECYCLE.BIN” and “System Volume Information

Hello Jamal,

What were you wanting to delete these system folders for? Are you having some sort of issue?

The “System Volume Information” is used by System Restore (System Protection) for restore points.

The “$RECYCLE.BIN” is used to store the deleted files for that specific volume until emptied from the Recycle Bin.

Sorry for my bad english.
I accidentally deleted volume disk in storage management (i'm using windows 7 Home).
It's my primary storage, I saved everything in that partition.
I'm looking for solution, and I found this thread
Undelete Hard disk Volume and recover data!

i follow his instruction by installing minitool partition wizard.
in this app, i use partition recovery wizard feature, and tada!! i see all of my data in deleted volume there!!
but i cant modify or anything from there, even i cant find any change after i've done this wizard.

so i used to follow instruction from thread starter named PANAIS by "right clicking on the hard disk,i click create, apply, restart, and tadaaaa the hard disk is back to life and with everything inside unharmed, programs, data, files etc."

and i..
i lost everything, including my "on progress" thesis and all memories from my beloved father

can anyone please help me with this?
i lost my mind, cant think normally.
thanks all

A:Accidentally delete volume and Wrong Use in Minitool Partition Wizard

You probably haven't received responses on this because your comments are contradictory. On the one hand, you say "everything is back", but then you say "i lost everything".

Which one is the case?

I've an external drive that has two partitions. I wanted to merge them and Clicked Delete Volume on Windows 7 Disk Management......but on the wrong partition.

There's no undo feature :-(

I've seen this but understand it only works on Windows 2000 and XP. How To Recover an Accidentally Deleted NTFS or FAT32 Dynamic Volume

I've also seen this Free Partition Recovery Wizard - recover deleted, lost partitions with EaseUS Partition Master.

I havn't done anything to the drive and don't want to do the wrong thing in case I start loosing data.

Has anyone used "EaseUS Partition Master" once it's restored the partitions are all the files intact? Or do I then need to use a file undeleter? I had about 91GB of data on the partition and don't have another drive at the moment with that much free?

Are there other software downloads that can help me?

Many Thanks

A:Clicked Delete Volume on wrong partition in Disk Management

I took a gamble.....

The key here was that I did not do anything with Windows or the drive, once I deleted the Volume.

Recover Deleted Partitions. Undelete Partition. Unerase Partition. Restore Partition - EaseUS Partition Recovery and Partition Table Doctor was perfect.

EaseUS Partition Recovery for free restored the partition and this included all files on the partition so no need for an undelete too.

Now i can't delete the virtual harddrive anymore.
I find the hard drive in disk management, but i can't delete it because the delete option is greyed out.
What i can do is to delete the corresponding driver to the harddrive with the game on.
Then the game and virtual harddrive is gone, however when i restart my computer the game and virtual harddrive is back again.

Can somebody please help me to get rid of this virtual harddrive ?
Thx !

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help. I definitely have a little spyware on this computer. It's Windows XP. It only manifests itself by either turning my master wave volume all the way down or random audio ads that come from nowhere. Also Internet Explorer windows open infrequently with ads out of nowhere.

I've run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, rkill, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot Search and Destroy and they pick up nothing. Hitman is the only thing to pick up two problems (labeled "smss.exe" and "services.exe") in the C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft folder. I've gained access to it by changing view and security settings and tried to manually delete the two files (which are labeled as "File Loaders" and "Black Internet"). It always says 'access is denied,' even when using Unlocker. Any attempt to delete upon reboot using Unlocker hasn't worked.

Hitman finds them, says it's removing them, and then says they will be removed upon reboot. I reboot and either one or both are still there. Any ideas?

Incidentally, when it starts up after rebooting, Spybot picks up that 'an important registry entry has been changed' and asks if I want to allow the change to the entry "BootExecute. Old data: autocheck autochk *\bootdelete. New data: autocheck autochk *\" I've tried both allowing it and denying it, and the trojans are still there.

Thanks for any help!

A:How do I delete services.exe and smss.exe from my System Volume Information folder?

Hello, the C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft folder is the System Restore Point folder. Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state. The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.Go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"Click... Read more

I found these using Microsoft Security Essentials:

With MBAM I also found "Malware.Trace" and "Broken.OpenCommand".

I haven't done full scans because they freeze and take a long time. Other things freeze also and sometimes it says windows explorer isn't responding and it restarts it. Even though I removed the above viruses my computer still behaves like this.

I have 25 photos in an album that I had to sort out and number, then renumber as I had to delete some.
Everything works fine until I get to number 16_sun city . Then for some reason I can't figure out, it skips from number 16 to number 20. After that things go completely nuts as the pix aren't viewable in proper order. 20 is followed by 18 for example.

I did a restart of pc knowing it wouldn't do anything. It didn't. I'm stumped.
Anyone else have this problem?

Anyone know a solution? Hope so.

Thank You

The System Volume Information folder is taking up about 18% of one of my 2 external hard drives. (I can't remember if I have actively programmed anything to be stored in that file.) In any event, is it safe to delete some of all of the files in that SVI folder?

Thanks much!

A:Is it Safe to Delete Contents of System Volume Info in External Drive

Basically the system volume folder is restore points. I wouldn't really recommened deleting it. It does a lot to keep your links in order. Also is you delete it you probable wouldn't be able to open some applications on it. You can turn off system restore under system settings in control panel. But this will stop restore for you computer also.
