Q: HP laptop will turn on but the screen will not turn on and r...

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in. I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display. I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it. Please help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I have an HP laptop. I have the settings to turn off the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity, however, I think that using Majic Jack as my phone service may show the system always being active.

Is there a way I can manually turn of the screen without shutting down or going to sleep mode, which would also turn off the Magic Jack?

Thanks,

Hi, I have a Dell XPS L701x notebook, and i have an external second LCD Monitor connected to the laptop. A:Laptop screen won't turn on

This can be several problems. My diagnosis: The LCD back light could be giving out and/or the operating system could be shot. If the laptop doesn't have reinstallation discs then I suggest buying a new operating system(Recommend Windows XP Pro) If the reinstallation of the operating system doesn't work. It's time to replace the LCD back light or better yet the whole screen. Which if I'm correct could be costly. It might be best to just buy a new laptop or hopefully you have a warranty and can return it for a new one. I hope that helps.

I have a older Imb laptop modle T23 computer and when I shut it down rather then using standby it takes several times trying to get it to come back on. I press the little round on/off button and the (z) button lights up and I hear the fan turn on and all of a sudden a series of beeps, and the screen won't turn on. The beeping is like 8 beeps, then stops but still nothing come up on the screen. Completely black! So i turn off the computer again, and turn on same thing. I continue doing this like 30+ times sometimes more sometimes less, then finally the beeps dont start and the screen is working. So needless to say its still working in the mean time, but its just such a pain if I shut it down. Does anyone know what may be causeing this and how I may be able to fix this problem. For now I am just going to continue using standby but when I have updates sometimes i need to shut down...Well hope you can help me! Thanks in advance! ~Nicole

I have a Dell Latitude C610, with Win2K. My hubby says he played a music CD he made recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried again, nothing would work. The CD plays OK in my desktop, so it seems that's not the cause, was just trying to accurately report what happened.

I come home, check it out, the screen is black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit, the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button. I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off & back on again, that works with my desktop.

What else should I try?

I have a HP Pavillon laptop that I purchased in 2008. It runs windows vista. Last night I put the screen down (which makes my laptop sleep) and came back after 30 minutes. THe light turned on for a little bit, but then it turned back off. The CPU and fan is running and I can see the display (barely), but the light will not turn on. This morning I turned it back on without the battery (but the power cord was plugged in) and it ran fine. I turned it back off and brought it to school with me. Now the laptop screen will not turn back on again. How do I fix this problem and get my laptop light to turn back on again?
Note: THe day before, I updated windows vista (not sure if that has to do with anything).

I have a Compaq Notebook PC with Windows 7. I was using it the other night and i locked it as I always do, and I opened the lid the next morning and the screen was black. So I shut it down with the power button and turned it back on, but the screen was still black. I don't know what to do with it. I haven't even had it a year. I bought it February of 2010. I really need help, I have no clue what to do... Please help!!

A:My laptop will turn on, but the screen is black.

Well, you should of posted in Windows 7 forum, so I'll move it for you. But being it is less then a year old, and I've never heard of a laptop with less then a year of warranty, you should contact Compaq about getting it repaired. But things to check, is the brightness turned up? There should be a key on the keyboard that'll adjust the brightness levels. Also, most Windows laptops have an option to turn the screen off when connected to an external screen. Look for that button on the keyboard and cycle it a few times and see if your screen comes back to life. Also, find a monitor to plug into the video out port on the laptop and see if you get a picture on it.

A:HELP MY LAPTOP SCREEN WONT TURN ON

If you can use an external monitor to connect to it, see if that produces anything. If the external monitor doesn't work then it is a video card problem. If the external monitor works, then the laptop's LCD screen is dead. Either way, you need repairs done to it. That's one of the reason I don't use laptops, everything is in one piece, when one thing fails, you have to send the whole thing to the repair shop, whereas with a desktop, you can swap parts yourself.

Have you attempted to connect an external display to see if you can get some sort of display? That will help make the determination if it is the motherboard itself or if it is the screen or a cable that could be having an issue.

Hey guys, I know there's a bunch of 'laptop won't turn on' threads around but none seem to apply to my laptop.
Basically, I have an HP dv2915nr Pavilion and the case for the screen finally broke from its hinges (the left side first then the right two months after). Not wanting to try to get replacement parts for it - it's a three year old computer I got at a clearance sale, I decided to just get rid of the screen and use a spare monitor I have.
I took off the adapter and battery, carefully removed the screen, microphones, and webcam and left it there for about five hours.
When I came back, I attached the monitor, plugged in the adapter and battery, and the light on the power jack turned on, but when I tried turning on the computer it wouldn't do anything. No noise from the fan, nothing. The little light that indicates the computer is powered wasn't on either - just the one on the jack.

I don't really know what to do now. I assume it's something to do with the power supply? Thanks in advance for your replies and Happy Holidays!

Hi there @Gleed,  Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I read your post and wanted to reach out to you to let you know that I will do my absolute best to help you get the display on your HP Pavilion 17-e067cl Notebook PC to come back on.  When we have come to a resolution, please share what worked for you with others by marking that post as an Accepted Solution. Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. Hi all

I have a problem with my fresh install of Windows 8.1. In the settings menu I have enabled the option to play a slideshow on the lockscreen and that when my PC is inactive it will show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen
For testing purposes I have set the screen turn off timer to 1 minute, but here's what happens:
After that one minute, the screen will dim slightly for a brief moment as if it wants to turn off the screen/go to the lockscreen slideshow. Then one minute later, it will do the exact thing again. Like it's being waked the second it wants to turn off the screen
Is anyone able to help me? It would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

A:Laptop won't turn off screen and play slideshow

It would be better to make a Photo Gallery Screensaver and use that, just point it to the pics you want to use in the screensaver setup.

I think the very settings you used to set up the Lockscreen Slideshow are preventing it from Locking. I don't know if you can tell your system to go to a Lockscreen after a certain period, it's either a screensaver or OFF. I'll try to set this up on my test machine and see if the same thing happens.

Hi, Check if there's any change to this behaviour if you disable hybrid boot - you can do this as follows. Right click on the Battery icon in the taskbar and select Power Options. Click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, first click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save changes button, then restart the notebook. Regards, DP-K

Hi, so I have an Acer Aspire 3002LMi and for as long as I've had it it has been susceptible to overheating easily and crashing. Normally this is resolved by manually cutting the power and everything is fine and dandy.

Now my sister was on the laptop and shut it down normally, and the next time I came to turn it on the green light on the power button came on, and I could hear some fans whirring inside and the CD drive was spinning, basically everything one would expect for a normal boot up, except there was nothing on the screen. No faint images, and the same happened when I attached a monitor and attempted to switch between screens.

I have tried many solution so far, such as opening up the laptop to see if the screen has come loose, and checking RAM, processor etc however everything seems to be fine and all connected.

Was hoping for any possible ideas as to how to resolve my problem, or whether it is more likely to be a component failure due to the overheating mentioned?

Sorry for the long windedness I am just trying to be as specific as possible to save answering all the basic questions over and over.

Thanks for any help
Matt

A:Laptop will not turn on/screen doesn't work

If you see normal views on the external screen, you likely have burned out your LCD Screen inverter. You should be able to find replacements online, but you need experience installing inverters. There are about 18 screws to remove since you must disassemble the top half of the case, and remove the screen to access the inverter socket which is at the bottom of the screen. Usually you can get an inverter for $15, but there are almost no two alike so be sure you have the correct one.

Sounds like the graphics processor on your laptop is on the way out, if even an external monitor didn't work.

Does BIOS work? F12/DELETE when booting up to get in.

Well, somehow I got the darkscreen problem fixed to where it will light up. Now, however, when the computer is turned on, it goes through the Window's XP page then before switching to the log on page, the screen goes dark and I have to hit Fn F7 to turn it on. I guess it thinks there is another monitor or something but there isn't.

I can't find how to change the booting procedure to fix this. I tried going into bios but hitting the delete key on startup doesn't seem to work on Think Pad T20's.

I know there is a simple fix to this but this simple mind doesn't know it and can't find it. Obviously this is a job for one of you incredible wizards.
Thanks as always

Hi,   first of all my laptop is : HP Pavilion dv6-6160se Entertainment Notebook to the problem now  A few days ago my laptops screen started  out of a sudden shutting down/turning black( no lights at all ). This was happening while using the laptop at random. The screen  had no lights, and if i use a flashlight on it there is nothing. like its turned off completelly. Before this happens. Ths behavior varies. Sometimes it flickers from my desktop to a black screen then back on and some times not. Most of the times screen changed to a radom color (green mostly) then becomes black/shuts down. NOTE: The laptop keeps runing, i can hear the videos playing so it probably isnt a gpu chip or gpu issue , music and games.  I searched the web for all kind of reasons that this could happen and tried some of the fixes . Here are everything i tried and all or the details i could accumulate in past coupe of days: 1. If the screen flickers , blacks out and then turns back on i get a message that gpu drivers have stopped working and recovered (  on both amd and intel ). 2. If the screen blacks out, on rare ocasions if you close the laptop lid and let the laptop go to sleep , when waking up screen works again ( noticable due to screen moving) 3. I tried installing 4 different drivers all with clear install. ( didn't work) 4. I tried to  to recover system with restore point. ( didn't work) 5.... Read more

A:Random laptop screen Black out / Turn off .

Hi @Ntas  I have read through your post and it seems there are a couple of possibilities, and I noted that you have already tried several of the things I would normally suggest. I will however post some of those links anyway for you to review, it is always possible there may be something in one of them that may have been missed or may inspire an idea of the cause. Since you mentioned that sometimes just moving the screen will cause the problem or make it disappear, that does seem like either a loose connection or maybe something like pressure on a part of the display causing the issue.  Of course that last part may just mean the display is on its last legs, but hopefully not. First I will give you a link to the service manual, to help you check the connections. Just be careful to read the sections on precautions, to protect yourself and to prevent any other damage. This manual is also useful in that it lists all the compatible parts, so if the display is defective you could use this guide to help order a compatible replacement if you choose to do so. HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide Here are some other sources, that may be helpful to you.Resolving Problems with Notebook Displays (Windows 7 and Windows 8)Diagnosing a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for Damage Also for your convenience here is the drivers page for your notebook.HP Pavilion dv6-6160se Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers I hope this all helps.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I spilled coke in it like a month ago, I have already replaced my laptop but have tried turning it on and it does a 1-3-1-3 beep code. I tried looking up solutions but I'm really not sure what to do. Any solutions to this problem will help. This is what I've found

1-3-1-3 22h Test 8742 Keyboard Controller Troubleshoot the keyboard. Troubleshoot the keyboard controller. Troubleshoot the motherboard.

1-3-1-3 A20 gate failure.

I'm not really sure what they mean or what I can do in this situation. Any help is appreciated.

I have been able to turn it on a couple of weeks ago after about 100 tries or so (lol) so is there anyway I can just turn it on only this once. I'm only trying to turn it on to retrieve some old files.

A:Laptop screen doesn't turn on but beeps

I am inclined to say that too long has gone by for an adequate fix. Normally, following spillages, you need to remove the battery, HDD, keyboard, RAM (pretty much all of it), wipe up what you can, and then leave to dry for 24hours (more if possible).

I'm afraid the damage may have already been done, BUT, may still be worth a try. Remove all components that you can (a quick search online should help you with your particular model), in particular those mentioned above (remember to use an anti-static wristband and mat when working with components). Clean up any sticky coke and dust, etc. then LEAVE everything to dry. Who knows, you might get a working laptop from this.

However, if you're not that bothered and just want the files from your HDD, invest in a HDD usb dock. They're relatively inexpensive and allow you to connect your bare HDD to your computer via an external docking station. Just make sure you take the battery out of your old laptop before trying to remove the HDD (again, make sure you have some antistatic equipment to do this).

Good luck

Hi guys,Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 500-14IBD Windows 10 I was hoping maybe one of you knows what to do. My girlfriend?s laptop does not turn on anymore (not how it is supposed to). But let me start at the beginning of the story. First my girlfriend called me and said to me her laptop was broken (no physical damage) and giving her a bluescreen. See picture: https://i.imgur.com/hkXxjlb.jpg. (the picture shows a kernel issue in Dutch). With this I thought that it will be a windows problem and possibly an easy fix. She clicked one of the keys and got this message: https://i.imgur.com/OlbgFcj.jpg.So, I when I got to her laptop the next day, I tried booting it up. I got the same bluescreen only with the [ESC] option, so I tried that, but the screen went black and I believe off. I waited for a bit, but it did not change so I turned the laptop off by holding the power button. When I restarted it, it went straight to the black screen (keyboard lighting works it?s even adjustable and fan spins up). I googled the problem and read I should try to hold the power button for said amount of time and then try again. I got it to work once (same bluescreen) but it went back from blue to black screen when I tried to do anything. Now I can?t get to the bluescreen at all. Can anybody help me with this problem? I already tried: Turning off, taking out the battery then holding the power button for 20 seconds. Putting in the charger and trying again.I tried to take out th... Read more

A:My laptop seems to turn on but the screen stays black.

Hi @AshwinVlaar,

Welcome to the Community.

Let us try to boot into BIOS using the novo button and load the BIOS its default settings. Follow the steps below.
1. Press the NOVO button
2. Select BIOS Set Up
3. In BIOS, press Fn+F9/F9 to load BIOS defaults then Fn+F10/F10 to save and exit.

If you were able to access BIOS using the NOVO button and load the BIOS defaults, but still getting a black or blue screen, then we suggest to reset the laptop to its factory settings by selecting the System recovery on the NOVO menu. Please be advised that system recovery will delete all your data.

Let us know how it goes.

I had been having battery trouble before but the laptop was working fine. The power and other lights on the keyboard light up for a second then it shuts down with a single beep. Then doesn't respond to pressing the power button for a few seconds. I have installed a new battery so that's probably not an issue anymore.

Hello,

My computer was running slow yesterday and I decided to refresh my pc. Today I updated it to 8.1, started installing my programs again and my computer was freezing like crazy. I then held the power button to turn it off and then pressed it again to turn it on. Only this time it just left the screen black and I was unable to do anything.
I press the power button on and it shuts off after a few seconds
I press the power button on and I try pressing the F keys to try and get something going and it shuts off
I remove the battery, but the battery back in and turn it on and it stays on but still has the black screen

I have taken the battery out, held power button for 15 seconds, and put it back in to try again and all it does is stay on with a black screen. Battery and power supply are fine as they both can individually power the laptop only if I remove the power source and then put it back in.

I'm normally okay at fixing problems on my computer but this is the first time I can't even get to any menus to try and get something going.
If anyone has any ideas, if I need to provide more info or can help me in any way I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,

A:Windows 8.1, turn on laptop to black screen and can't do anything.

Can you see anything when you boot the computer up  (even if only the BIOS/splash screen)
If you still get nothing, have you tried to connect the laptop to an external monitor and see if that shows anything?
