How to keep System Sounds at 0 volume or mute?

Q: How to keep System Sounds at 0 volume or mute?

I find System Sounds does not stay at 0 volume or muted, with one exception: when volume mixer is open.

When I close the volume mixer and open a program that requires UAC, the chime is at "full" volume of selected device's volume setting.

As examples, Piriform's CCleaner and Revo's Uninstaller chime and reset the volume to "full" while Auslogics' Disk Defrag does not reset the volume but nevertheless chimes.

Is this a lost cause?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My volume icon in Taskbar disappeared a few days ago, along with sounds of any kind (internet, iTunes, WMP...). A diagnostic from Fix My PC revealed the error: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe" ...I'm not sure if that's part of this problem or not.

There are no yellow! prompts in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. I haven't identified the virus which likely caused this issue, and I do not have a copy of Windows XP to reinstall as I bought this laptop from my former employer upon leaving the company.

My objective is fix the Sound so it is fully operational again. Any ideas? Please help!

Thank you!

Hi bge2i. Welcome to TSF.

You could try running the command "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt window, which you can access by going to START>ACCESSORIES>COMMAND PROMPT. Let me know if that helps.

Basically when I listen to music through foobar2000, winamp, any audio player, windows sort of regulates my volume if any other program makes a sound. System sound rings? Music volume lowers. Watching a video on youtube or any other service, music volume lowers, playing a game? Music lowers.

This problem has persisted through 2 entirely new computers, the only thing remaining consistent is my AV receiver. 2 different brand video cards as well (monitor is hooked into receiver hdmi out, and then video card goes into receiver hdmi input) so both AMD and Nvidia have done this to me so far. I don't recalled if this was an issue before the receiver, it's been way too long.

It was also like this in W7 and now W10.

I find it weird that this isn't a problem when I use headphones. Only my receiver. I've never had this happen with any other component though (blu ray player, ps4, xbox1 , 360, etc). I've also listened to music on those devices and played a game or w/e and it doesn't happen.

It really seems like a windows issue or driver problem, I don't understand how it can't be fixed.

Usually these are the go to things -

The BenQ is the monitor connecting to the receiver, other is my headset.
So I figured I'd ask for help here, there's entire articles dedicated to selecting "Do Nothing" in the Sound Communications tab to stop this problem. Getting tired of reading them.

Thanks!

I just removed and recovered from a virus a few days ago that disabled my Antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Everything is back to normal except for my system audio. Here is a brief list of my computer specs before I list my specific problem and what I have done so far. If you want any other specifications, let me know and I will gladly give them.

1. Home-built computer, so no specific brand.
2. Abit SG-80DC Motherboard
3. Pentium(R) 4 3.00GHz Processor
4. 3.01GHz, 512 MB of RAM
5. Audio Onboard 5.1 cannels Audio CODEC (Yes, my sound card is built into my motherboard.)
6. RealTek AC'97 Audio with Diver Version: 5.10.0.6030
7. Windows XP SP2

The Problems
I believe my computer was infected with the Trojan.W32.Beagle virus and perhaps one or two others as well. I have managed to rid myself of them, but several sound issues have cropped up in their wake. NOT ONE of these problems was around before I got the virus. They have ALL occurred since I removed the virus using various programs recommended by tech people online. I did actually have sound while I had the virus, so my suspicion is that one of the programs designed to remove the viruses removed something else that it shouldn't have. Here is a list of the problems I am currently having:

1. The volume control icon has vanished from the taskbar.

2. The startup and closing sounds, along with all other system sounds have stopped playing.

3. In the "Sounds" tab area of the "... Read more

Hi,

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

A:Dell Studio 1535 wont start. Blinking mute and volume up button, solid volume down button.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
If the computer has active warranty, please send me the service tag and registered owner’s name on the computer in a Private Message. To send me a Private Message, click my User name, and then click Start Conversation.
If the warranty on the computer has expired, you may contact our expired warranty services to purchase/replace the compatible parts. Please refer the following link that has contact details for our Expired Warranty Services: http://dell.to/14FoBtb

Hey so I have (what I think) is a basic question.

I listen to the radio on my work computer.
What I am trying to do is have it so the volume is on mute all the time, but when I plug in my headphones it un-mutes. Then if the cord comes out by accident it goes to mute without playing any sound.

I hope this makes sense and that someone can help.
It is a realtek audio, and I am using the front audio port (if that matters).

A:How do I make my volume mute when my headphones come out?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no function for this native in windows. This function does exist in things like iPods via programming.

I think HP uses a program to monitor the "extra" buttons like volume, play, mute, etc. Try the Vista version of that program for your laptop.

Hello All,Am facing issue with the WAVE volume control . It gets muted automatically and have to manually again raise its volume bar. This I guess is related to the Advertisment pop up's which comes up and I can hear the music of the advertisement. Sometimes 2 AD's are played simultaneously. The strange thing is even when am not using internet explorer, I can find iexplorer.exe being displayed in Task Manager. I am not sure what kind of virus is this. I tried running Bit Defender Anit Virus, but before the scan completes and results are shown, my Dell Inspirion 1525 , shuts down due to over heating(I guess).I ran a Hijack This , so that I can find the problem. Attached for your inputs.

Just an update to my problem. I learned that I was infected by iexplore.exe virus. I tried various tools like1)Hijack This2)Malware Bytes3)Prevx4)Trojan Removerbut none worked for me. finally I tried "Combofix" and seems like it has fixed the issue. I need to monitor my machine for couple of more days to be sure if there is no other problem. The wave control is normal now and I don't hear random advertisment music.Strange thing is after combofix finished , it created a folder on C:/Combofix and inside that folder, it created some exe's and PREVX is claiming it to be a virus threat. Not sure how a virus removal tool can create exe's which are identified as virus themselves. Please suggest, if I can delete the combo fix folder.???Thanks in advance.!!

Probably some sketchy website I visited, they say curiosity killed the cat but it also messed up the computer. The sound just randomly shut off. When I started looking at what was the problem I noticed that on the volume control panel the wave volume was muted. I fixed the volume but after a few minutes it will mute itself again. Another odd thing was that although I usually use Firefox, I keep getting IE pop-ups showing an HTTP 404 page. When I looked at Task Manager it shows iexplorer.exe running. If I try to end the process, it will restart in about 10-30 seconds. Oh, and it's being run by SYSTEM instead of Owner like normal IE. Thanks,PeachyMei

I've got a cordless logitech iTouch keyboard. When I hit the button button on the keyboard, it mutes the "master volume". However WAV volume seems to overwrite the master volume. Meaning if I have an mp3 playing you can still hear it even though master volume is mute.

Strange I know, but it's true.

Sound card is onboard: Intel 82801BA/BAM AC' 97

I've got latest drivers from Logitech, but problem still occurs with different keyboard.

A:Muting master volume doesn't mute all?

Hi:

I have the same problem. WAV volume level is used instead of master volume. It does not matter if I use my laptops volume buttons or adjust the volume with the volume control in the Control Panel.

My sound is processed using an ALi Audio Accelerator.

If anyone can help with this it'd be super.

Croque.

As in another fellow member, i have the same problem. This is my first post, which is of course about some suspected malware. I'm not so sure how it started but I'm having the same problem as a few people on this forum. Oh, and it's being run by SYSTEM instead of Owner like normal IE.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Administrator at 3:03:53.31 on Sun 07/11/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1006.262 [GMT -7:00]AV: avast! Hey there. I was wondering if there is a way to create a shortcut to mute/unmute (or 2 shortcuts: one for each function) an specific application. For example, I am constantly muting/unmuting Firefox because I am listening to music most of the time, but when I need to listen to something I gotta open the mixer, click, blah blah. Maybe there's something I can add to the line "C:\Windows\System32\SndVol.exe" or something like that.

A:Volume mixer: way to create a shortcut to mute an app?

Google yields lots of possibilities: shortcut to mute sound

One of them should do what you want.

Two days ago I uninstalled a codec pack while I was logged in as another user. Since then the buttons on the front of my laptop that control my volume don't work. They don't light up and are unresponsive. I know its a small thing, but I've grown reliant on those buttons and I'd like them to work again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sounds like your keys are not mapped correctly. Does HP have some utiliity that does that for your system?

Also check the control panel and keyboard. You might be able to map those keys there.

@alwend Hi,Perform a Hard Reset:1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards.2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 1 minute.3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (do not connect the battery), press the Power button and check is your problem solved or not.

This is problem that just one day came into being on my laptop running Windows 7. I can't associate it with any particular update since I don't play videos or sound files frequently.

Here's what happens. Let's say I got to YouTube and play a video. The sound will work for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then it will suddenly stop. The video still plays. If I toggle mute (press it twice) or press the volume up or down, the sound comes back but it doesn't last as long. To listen to something, I have to stand ready at the volume (one click up or down) or mute (two clicks) button to press it any time the sound goes away. The same thing happens if I play an mp3 on the music player. So it's not browser plugin related. It seems either sound driver related, or even a HW issue perhaps.

I just upgraded to Windows 10, using a completely different browser and the problem is still there.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks

Hi,

I am running windows XP on a Dell Inspiron Mini and have internet explorer popups coming up in the background. Sometimes there are ads with audio messages. Sometimes the sound mutes (wave volume mutes). I tried reinstalling the operating system, which did not work multiple times, until it finally succeeded (I am not sure why it finally succeeded). Even after this reinstallation (which seemed to delete most files from the hard drive) the popups and other antics continued. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Norton Antivirus aren't detecting anything. I ran DDS and GMER as per instructions prior to posting. GMER generated a message after completing scan that said rootkit detected. I clicked OK and haven't done anything with regards to that message. I have included all the log files requested. Thank you for your help!

I have been chasing threads trying to find solutions to this.  Found a clue, was directed to the power management driver thread as a possible solution, was told it was not as I was on Windows 10 and was told to start a new thread.  So here it is.Very frustrating as none of my other brands of laptops have issues wth actual buttons working after an update....however Lenovos do.  Here is the situation that occurred after most likely a Windows 10 update. However I cannot be sure it was not a Lenovo update or a Lenovo update hidden in a windows 10 udpate.  All I know is my volume buttons don't work correctly now.  Some specifics.... Holding the function key and hitting escape toggles the fn behaviour. However the light on the mute button never goes off although it does mute and Un mute the volume. It also brings up the onscreen volume display which you can touch and change volume crudely. However while the mute button toggles muting the volume....Although the light stays on....the volume up and down buttons also mute and unmute vs. raising and lowering volume!!!I saw the comment that in windows 10 these buttons are controlled by windows. However not sure why only lenovo has issues with their functions keys after oem or Windows updates. Thanks for any help.BJBBJB

Hi,

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

Thanks,
Jack

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

Jack (too)
