KB3161949 June 2016 Update Causes Network File Shares to Become Unavailable

Q: KB3161949 June 2016 Update Causes Network File Shares to Become Unavailable

After installing KB3161949 on Windows 7 and 8.1 Professional, mapped network file shares become unavailable (red x). This seems to be an issue when the systems reside on separate networks (like Public/Private) Shares are only accessible via IP or FQDN.
Uninstalling the update restores access. Microsoft needs to pull this update!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two PCs wirelessly connected via a linksys router. Both have good internet connections. Both have had working shares that were seen in both directions. Recently the laptop was connected to a university's wireless lan. Once the laptop was returned to the home network, the shares stopped working.
Share on comp 1 - \\Primary\common , guest account turned on. gpedit used to set guest account restrictions to disabled. IP of 192.168.1.100
comp 2 - guest account turned on. gpedit used to set guest account restrictions to disabled IP of 192.168.1.101

When comp 2 attempts to use previously good share of \\Primary\common the error is "Windows cannot find '\\Primary\common'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking on the Start button and then clicking Search."
When comp 2 maps a network drive to \\192.168.1.100\common, the share exists and is fully accessible.
Bad news: All previous mapped printer shares no longer will work. Double-clicking on them opens the printer dialog window, but the title bar says "Unable to Connect". When I use the Add Printer and browse for them, the browse window shows the 'Primary' pc but does not list any printers beneath it

Again, up until recently both pcs had working shares against each other. now they can ping each other's IP and comp2 can access an IP based share on comp1 (Primary).

But, neither can ping the other's computer name. A ping -a 192.168.1.100... Read more

What is the verdict on MSKB3161608 - June 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1?

I see that MSKB3161608 includes quite a few patches, including MSKB3161647 - Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: June 2016. In the past, I think some people mentioned MS possibly slipping in some Win10 crap with patches to the Windows Update Client.

For Windows 7 SP1 systems that will not be "upgraded" to Windows 10, does MSKB3161608 (or MSKB3161647) include any nasties, Win10 garbage, or MS-suprises?

For Windows 7 SP1 systems that will not be "upgraded" to Windows 10, is MSKB3161608 a recommended install?

A:What is the verdict on MSKB3161608 - June 2016 update rollup?

Hi SevenOfNine

(So, you are referring to Star Trek Voyager)

Actually, you still can upgraded to Windows 10 as this will end on July 2016, as announce.
I refuse to install, as i am used to Windows 7.

I think you can do it, because it keep showing when going to MSN website.
Try it, as it may works.

Sometimes i don't understand why people so like to do update this patch that so on....
When it is good and ready, Windows update will push to your pc, definitely.
You can go > Start --> Windows update, then it pop-up to remind to upgrade to Windows 10 (was downloaded into my pc.)

Hiya

The Nimda virus has been detected within one of the compressed help files included in the Korean language version of Application Center Test (ACT). ACT is a component of the Korean language versions of the Visual Studio .NET.

In all analyzed scenarios, Microsoft considers the likelihood of activating the virus to be extremely low, if not impossible.

Microsoft has released an update that eliminates the infected files from an existing installation of (Korean) Visual Studio .NET.

System Requirements

Any one of these Korean releases:

Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect, Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Developer, Visual Studio .NET Professional, and Standard editions of all Microsoft developer tools, including Visual Basic .NET, Visual C++ .NET, and Visual C# .NET.

I have encountered an annoyance in Winddows 8.1. Whenever I delete a file from my network shares I get the confirmation prompt, if I really want to delete this file (or folder). I have, of course, unticked the option for the prompt in my Recycle Bin settings but it only affects the local drive.

Surprisingly, I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere but I found a lot of instructions how to enable the Recycle Bin prompt.

A:How do I remove the delete file confirmation on network shares

The following is a direct quote from the Windows server website.

I hope this provides some additional insight.

You may have noticed that when you delete a file stored on a network location or mapped network drive that the file is permanently deleted. It does not go to the local computer's recycle bin and does not go to the server's recycle bin. I have discovered a work-around that extends recycle bin coverage to include mapped network drives. The solution is not 100% perfect, but works extremely well and does not rely on Shadow Copies or 3rd-party software.

Here's how:
1. Map a network drive to the network share you want to use. Make sure that the drive is re-connected on logon. If you don't know how to do this, search Google.
2. Browse to C:\users\<user name>.
3. Right-click on one of the folders in this location (I chose saved games) and click properties.
4. Select the Location tab.
5. Click Move, browse to to root of the drive you mapped in step 1, and click Select Folder.
6. Click Ok and click yes in the dialogue box that appears.
7. Repeat these same steps for all users on the computer.

You can now verify that the network drive is protected by the recycle bin by right-clicking on the recycle bin and clicking properties. The network drive should be listed in the Recycle Bin Locations column.

Some warnings:
1. This only protects files accessed through the mapped network drive, and not by UNC paths. So for example, if you mapped \\se... Read more

Hello all,

We have a Windows 7 Pro computer in an unsecure room acting as a file server to 10 other computers on the network.

My issue is with creating and securing network shared folders so that prying eyes can not access info not meant for them.

We currently have 3 folders to share with different departments. These folders are 'Accounting', 'Design', and 'Production'.

As mentioned there are 10 other computers on the network and user accounts have been created on the file server to match the user accounts on each of the 10 computers. For these 10 user accounts on the file server, we did however set up the users with passwords that are different than the password used on their own computer. This was done to prevent anyone from logging into the file server and messing with it.

The method I am considering for sharing the 'Accounting', 'Design', and 'Production' folders is to share each folder on the file server and to add 'Everyone' as a user, granting access to all 10 users on the network. To limit access to any particular user, via the 'Security' tab on the shared folder, I press the edit button and add the user. Then all their permissions are set to deny. I would add more users I wish to deny access in the same way.

It seems to work fine. Mapping a network drive to the file server is allowed only by users not denied for the particular share and a password is not required to map to the share.

Is there any security risk to doing it this way or any downside I may ... Read more

A:Win 7 Pro file server with network shares - is this method secure?

Hi there,

This is not an optimal solution. What you've done, if I understand your explanation properly is open up access (everyone), then put band-aids over it.

One better approach is to (a). Create groups for each department (b). Create the shares with permissions specific to each group (Accounting users can access the accounting share), then grant specific Allow permissions only to that group for that folder and sub-folders. You could add deny permissions for others, but it simply adds complexity that you don't need.

A good security model starts from a deny-all point and adds allow permissions as required. You are working the other way.. Allow all then deny as required. It may well work, but you risk missing something one day and then someone gets access to something they shouldn't.

It's better to have a user complain that can't access something (that you then fix), than have someone with access to something they shouldn't and they don't tell you about it.

Where possible you should always stay away from Everyone permissions.

Also, full control, unless specifically needed, should only be granted to administrators.

As a general rule of thumb, you open it up only as much as you need to to let the people who should have access gain access.

It may be that the credentials required to access the share are stored in your credential manager (see control panel). Password protected shares are a good thing, as long as you don't have to enter the password every time. Worked in... Read more

Hello All,
Strange things happened when I tried to access a NAS share using my windows 7 PC.

Steps:

1. Access "\\ipaddress" and login in. -> success.

2. Click any folder listed  -> Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.

3. Wait for a while. Click the folder again -> success.

However on other PCs, windows 7 or 8, I got no error. I tried the fixes proposed online and found that configuring "Windows Credential Manager" works for me. But no one explained why.

So I traced the packets in wireshark and found that the windows 7 client sent a strange smb2 packet to samba server after clicking the folder.

The wrong message looks like "Tree Connect Request Tree: \\ipaddress". According to smb2 protocol, the tree connect function requires a buffer in the form "\\ip\sharename". Obviously, my PC sent a wrong message and got the error back.

Why my Windows 7 client sent the path without sharename, others don't?
How to avoid it?
If you need more info, please ask.

After installing the Security Updates from the October 2016 Rollup/Quality Update. IE crashes when you open an .eml file. An application hosting a WebBrowser control (ieframe.dll) also crashes when doing that. This happens on Win7 and Win10 (maybe others
I couldn't test).

Today June 19 2012 I received this.Did anyone get this also? After Microsoft's service had been cracked by Flame, my trust in Microsoft has dropped to zero.So I would need confirmation if anyone else had thisupdate today (19 June 2012).The interesting thing is, mostly it gives a link forthe update to read more info about a certain update. But here today is no description whatsoever.edit: I should mention the odd thing about this is, I lookedinto my update settings and it was set to automatically installand update windows. So it should have downloaded this and installed. So why the difference? It makes me feel uneasy, to say the least.Advise pleaseThank You

A:Urgent - Windows 7 Update Service Update June 19 2012

I called Microsoft just now.
They established a remote session directly to my PC.
After verification that my OS is legit etc. they had a look at this.

They recommend that I reinstall Windows from one of their ISO images
and not from the HP recovery partition.

The guy said he wouldn't trust that update as there is the information link
missing.

I only can do what he says, downloading that 3 GB ISO and burn the DVD
and reinstall Windows.

So, if you get the SAME looking update, my advise is as his.
Don't install that update.

I'm going to buy a new license of one of these product, so any suggest please?
I have used Bitdefender, Avast, Kaspersky ( about 3 years ago), I haven't used Norton and Trend Micro.

A:KIS 2016 vs NIS 2016 vs BIS 2016 vs Avast IS 2016 vs Trend Micro IS 2016

Out of all these, and your prerequisites,I would go with Kaspersky!

Any help will be much appreciated

No DMP files included in upload please try this method
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the ... Read more

Update 493 available. Added detection of new virus Worm/Mofeir and new variant of I-Worm/Sobig - I-Worm/Sobig.E.
- June 25, 2003 -

A:AVG update 25 June Sobig-E

Kaspersky Labs noted this Sobig worm is new in it's use of zipped files:
Separating Sobig.e from its four predecessors is its use of the Zip file format, what it does after system infection is virtual identical to past Sobig variants. Sobig.e getting around as a Zip file is a significant twist because while company gateways often filter out potentially dangerous file formats such as .exe, .vbs and .scr files, the .zip format is rarely scrutinized by businesses. Indeed past Sobig variants would have usually never made it past company gateways.

I just saw this after checking for updates.

Looks like one of them is to address the long scan time for updates on "some" computers.

I understood MS would release a final update in June 2020 before going end-of-support in jan 2020.
But, almost August and no update in sight, according to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/advanced-threat-analytics/ata-versions
So, when can we expect this update (if at all)?

"Patch Tuesday" broke our install of Outlook 365. It was working fine on Monday and on Tuesday it was hanging on "Processing." So I restored back to the last restore point before the update and it worked great after that. Yesterday it re-installed the updates, and again Outlook didn't load. Restoring again today "fixed" it. Now it wants to update again, so I will disable updates until the problem is fixed. I don't know which particular "patch" is causing the problem; there were about 22 of them that installed.

I am setting up a computer for a user in an office. The user can access all her required network share folders from her existing computer and from any other computer in the office. The computer we are setting up for her is denied access to the two network
shares that she needs to be able to access. We are able to map the drives but get "You do not have permission to access
\\computer\folder. Contact your network administrator" We are able to access shared folders on the same machine that contains the folders for which access is denied.

There are two shared folders with this problem. One is on a domain server, the other is shared on a workstation. There is acess to other shared folders on either of these machines. Access is only denied to the folders that we need to map.
I have also tried logging on to the problem machine as another user with administrative privileges and get the same permission denied error message.
So it appears that the problem is on the Windows 7 machine not on the server since the problem is not experienced from any other computer on the network.

I have tried turning off the firewall, renaming the computer and logging on as a different user. We have also looked in Group Policy for any policy settings but didn't see anything obvious. I am not fully knowledgeable about Group Policy editing so I could
be overlooking something in Group Policy.
Would appreciate any help or suggestions for fixing this.

Sam
