How to define a good computer?

Q: How to define a good computer?

Is a laptop has more memory, hard drive space , faster processor speed like I5 is consider a very good computer?

Preferred Solution: How to define a good computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How to define a good computer?

Good is a subjective term... Good for what?

Powerful would be more a term for an i5 laptop... rather than good.

I am new to the forum, but not new to computing. I recently started having problems with this Vista Home Premium box not being able to resolve DNS names for only computers on my home network (all others XP boxes or Windows Server 2003). It can ping the IP addresses of the local boxes. It doesn't have a problem connecting to the internet. But this is a big problem when it comes to sharing files within my local network.

I have disabled Windows Firewall and McAfee Firewall and Services to try and diagnose the problem.

I have been googling this for a couple of days looking for ideas, but I have none. I have validated that DNS is running. NETBios over DHCP is enabled. Subnet mask is 255.255.255. DHCP and DNS server IP is correct.

Anything that anyone could point me to try? I am out of ideas.

A:Ping on Workgroup Computer Names Bad / IP Addresses Good / Internet Good

Unless you've got a DNS server running at home, it's rather unlikely that DNS is being used to resolve names of your home computers when pinging by name. Instead, the machine does a broadcast (on the local segment) to the effect of "if you're called XYZ, please get back to me and tell me your IP address".

If that's not working for you, my first inclination would be to suspect firewalls on the other machines - not necessarily on the machine exhibiting symptoms. Try disabling and even uninstalling (3rd-party) firewalls while you're troubleshooting, and also test what happens when all machines are booted to [safe mode + net].

I have about a 5 year old computer i will tell you the specs.

MSI (VIA) MS-6309 v2.0 - Motherboard
850Mhz Intel Celeron - now overclocked to 1Ghz
40GB Western Digital 5400rpm HDD(now slave) - now with a second 7200 40GB as master
it came with a (tornado?) video card but i now upgraded to a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 which is a 256MB AGP 8x card.

I got it because it was at a VERY good price and it out of the packet but my friend builds computers and he got the wrong gfx card so he sold this one to me cheap... my computer is an AGP 4x. I understand i cant upgrade that unless i get a new motherboard. I have drivers that microsoft installed by itself (Nvidia GeForce FX5200 Microsoft Corporation) is it worth going to the nvidia website and upgrading to their drivers? my computer is really old and slow and i want to get the best performance out of this card... I dont think i can run games like Need For Speed Underground 2 can i? because i have a slow processor? i tried to play Halo Trial downloaded from microsoft but it went to the loading screen at the start but then just shut down before it got to the menu.

My point is... what can i do to get maximum performance out of this card but without increasing the startup items too much etc

Hi -

Someone said the former, which doesn't make sense, to me.

A:Always on -define, please

Hi - When I turn on my PC, am I connected to WEB or am I connected only when I open the Browser?Someone said the former, which doesn't make sense, to me. Thank you.If you have a modern broadband Internet connection that is considered "always on", then that is exactly what it means…always on…whether your computer is on or not. Of course, if you do not have any Internet device (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc) that is actively using the Internet connection, then the Internet connection will not be actively used even though it is "on".For example, my cable Internet connection is always on as long as my cable modem is powered up. It does not matter if I have all my computers turned off or on.The only way to shutdown an "always on" Internet connection is to unplug the cable/fiber/DSL modem.

When someone states that their computer has been hijacked do they mean that they have Adware/Spyware/Virus or are they referring to something else? I read a thread where people were helping her and she was following and doing what they had her to do and she was successful, she was at one of the last steps and stated that she had just been hijacked and had to start with different steps. What happened? Is hijacked just a catch all or is it where someone else has actually entered her computer and is running behind her? Thanks

I'm trying to send some window messages from user input.
For example: BM_CLICK

Now I know BM_CLICK is defined, but I can't figure a way
to use the input string "BM_CLICK" and get it's defined
value (or any other #define) without using something
like if(lstrcmpi, Arg, "BM_CLICK" == 0) and manually
assigning the value, or hardcoding BM_CLICK in

Any ideas on how to convert a "BM_CLICK" string to a
BM_CLICK message without using IF?

Thanks, Mac

A:C/C++ using #define values...

You're quite right -- you can't really use BM_CLICK or any other #define at run-time unless you refer to it directly, because a #define is just a text substitution as far as the compiler is concerned (i.e., it happens at compile time, and any knowledge about the #define is lost). I've used a table and a lookup function to map the input text ("BM_CLICK") to the corresponding value; it's not particularly elegant, but it solves the problem.

Hope this helps.

OK, I'm writing a C++ program, and I've got several #define statements after an #include statement for one of my headers.
Something like:

#include "classes.h"

I was wondering, can I use the defined values in the header file that was included, or is there some problem with this. I ask b/c my computer is all unplugged and I can't test it for myself.

If there is a problem, is there any way I can resolve it and still use the defined values in both files.

Recently in an exam I sat I was asked to write in an algorithm in which I was familiar how to find the maximum value in an array.

I wrote it out in True Basic how it would be done, but I'm told by a friend that the correct answer should have been written in pseudocode or represented as a flow chart.

If there is a debate over my answer should I accept I did the question wrong? Or should marks be awarded as I was able to represent the steps in True Basic which proves I understood the process?

Any ideas?

I want to use a table in a wordprocessor for a diary. In a couple of wordprocessors (one of which is OpenOffice.org Writer) it asks you to state the number of columns and the number of rows. The number of columns is no problem, 2. One for the date and the other for the coverage (writing) of that date. The problem is stating the number of rows. I don't know how many rows I'll need. Is it possible to set up a table with an indefinite number of rows?

Hi so today i finally got my computer built, everything is nice and cool running, its purely awesome right now, its also very quiet. well kinda, the fans are silent, my psu isnt hearable even if i put my ear next to it, i got 2 140MM fractal fans running at 7V (Cant hear them at all) and my cpu cooler with a 140mm noctua is even more silent, but i get a very very weird noise, its not constant either, it makes the fairly loud (atleast annoying) sound for a couple of secs then it slowly fades of and the computer becouse silent, the silence remains for about one sec and then the noise slowely fades in, this keeps happening again and again non stop, when i take of the side panel the noise gets less intense, then i apply pressure on my old harddrive on 500gb (well old and old, its about 3.5years or so..) in a very special way the annoying sound stops,
Why is this? can i do something about it? i will try putting 4 more rubber rings in the harddrive cage and screw the screw less tight and see what happends, but if you have any idea please let me know

So I'm brand new to programming and I've decided to learn java first. Whenever I go to turn my .java file into a .class with the "javac" command, I get the following:

"'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command"
So I googled and got that I should put this into the command prompt:

set PATH=%PATH%;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_01\bin

That worked, and from there I was able to type 'javac filename.java' and it worked. Once I exited the command prompt and went back in, however, I had to redefine it again. I really don't want to have to define javac or otherwise put in its path every time I want to compile something.

Also, all my java files are up to date. And I know I could just use a compiler, but I want to get used to doing it without the command prompt so I don't become dependant on compilers and then be put in a situation where I lack access to one.

A:Permanently define javac?

Hi there

Go to Start > Run and type in sysdm.cpl (or into the search bar if you are using Vista or 7) Then press Enter.

Click on the Advanced tab at the top and then click on the Environment Variables button on the bottom.

This will open a new window.

Click on New... and under variable name use : PATH
and under variable Data use : C:\j2sdk1.4.2_01\bin

press OK and exit. Then reboot your computer. It should work just fine now.

Note: you will have to change this every time you update the JDK. If you'll notice, the version is part of the path.
Newer versions of the JDK take care of adding this themselves.

Sounds like you have effectively deleted the file type, IMO.

You can add it back by creating a "new" file type (.inf) and designating Notepad as the program that opens such files.

Does anyone know the nature of this when I opened Windows XP tourguide from my desktop?

Your computer is halted and needs to do something about this script:

File: C:/hp/HOTGuide/hpagent.wsf

What do you want to do?

1. Stop this script (recommended)
2. Allow activity once
3. Allow entire script once
4. Quarantine
5. Authorize this script

A:Define Norton file and warning please!!

Judging by the path, I suspect that this may be something to do with a Hewlett-Packard peripheral on your PC. Whether it's a logfile (doubtful, given the "HOTGuide" part) or something more sinister, I don't know. It's probably best to stop the script from running, just to make sure it's not malicious.

Hi tech guys,

I was checking the recent laptops and their specifications to buy one, I came through the below spec. in which to define the processor speed,
what I knew so far is something like 2.00 GHz, 1,7 GHz, 2,3GHz etc, easy figures to understand since I bought the last laptop about 6 years ago,

I need to understand these (i5-xxxx) or (i7-xxxx) it's clear that (i7) is the recent one, but what the are the digits following the (i7) and the next alphabet such as (M), (U) or (QM) what do these imply? or how to configure which is the recent or the fastest one by these digits? look in below:

01) intel Core i5-3210M
02) intel Core i5-3317U.
03) intel Core i5-3517U
04) intel Core i7-3517U
05) intel Core i7-3612QM
06) intel Core: i3-3110M
07) intel Core: i7-3610QM = (2.3 GHz, Up to 3,3 L3 cache 6MB)
08) 3rd Core: i7-3630QM (2.4 GHz turboboot up to 3,40 GHz 6MB L3cache)
09) intel Core: i7-3630QM (2.4 GHz, 6MB L3 cache)
10) intel Core: i7-3610QM (2.3 GHz)

I will be very much thankful and appreciate to provide me some idea about the above,
Thanks and regards

So then i downloaded real temp to make sure my processor wasnt over heating (didnt buy the fan upgrade) and it shows 2 cores. The performance increase is noticeable but i did go from 1.8Ghz to 2.6. Temps are running between 40C and 60c at a load.
Then I started wondering is this a dual core so i checked in task manager and it also shows core 0 and core 1 (2 cores ).
Intel says the bios supports quad core technology. So did I do something wrong? or is this a dual core with 4 cores? <<<That sure sounds dumb...

Hi all

Firstly let me mention that I have a severe learning disability and am not tech savvy, so please if you intend to respond to this question ensure that it (preferably) includes graphics to describe the process and contains no technical jargon; every online article regarding this question has no mention of what I am about to ask:

I am using Word 2013 and am wanting to apply the expand/collapse feature to several areas in my existing document, everyone will know that it is easy to apply; but what I find frustrating is that when I collapse the desired text (half a page) I find out that everything from that point onwards gets collapsed.
How do I tell Word to collapse only a specific portion of the document and up to what point? I?m sure the solution is easy to achieve, but as mentioned before this isn?t addressed online.
Thanks in advance.

Hello guys,

I use MS Excel 2010. In this app, I know that using Formulas > Define names > define name it is possible to name a cell (or range). At that dialog box there is a scope rectangle which if I choose the entire sheets scope (workbook) so it's said that this name is valid for the entire workbook. First what does this valid mean please? Then, OK, I think I understand it but why when I name cell A1 (in the worksheet1 for example) to "first" its name on that worksheet is valid, that is its name, here "first", is shown in Name Box, but although I've used workbook scope, when I change the worksheet (to worksheet2) and active cell A1, just A1 is shown there not the put name, "first"!?

A:Define names in workbook scope

If you name A1 "First" in worksheet1, the name is a valid name that defines the cell reference worksheet1!A1.

The name is not allocated to any other range of cells.

So, A1 in worksheet2 is still A1. Setting the scope of the name to global does define the same name for the same cell(s) in any other worksheets.

However, in worksheet2 you can reference the name "First" and it will use the contents of the named cell(s) from worksheet1.

An Example;

In Worksheet1 A!:A3 I enter the contents..

A1: Apples
A2: Oranges
A3: Lemons.

Then I define the name "Fruit" that covers that range of cells. I also set the scope of the name to be workbook (Which is the default)

Now I go to worksheet2 and I create a data validation list object and I tell it to use the "Fruits" named range. I create this list in Worksheet2 at B2 (any cell would be fine, just using B2 as an example).

When I click on the list drop down in worksheet2!B2 it will show me apples, oranges and lemons.

Had I not used the workbook scope I could not have used the name in any but the named scope sheets. Eg. If I had selected Sheet1 as the scope, then that name can only be referenced from within sheet1

Can someone plz tell me the difference between the speaker channels when you want to buy speakers? Like 2 channel,2.1 surround,5.1 surround......
I understand that its to do with what sound card to a point, but Im not real bright on the specifics of sound cards,or audio electronics. Can I buy a 2.1 surround system and use it on integrated sound? I guess I have noticed that that is the difference between 2 channel and 2.1 surround, the 2.1 has a subwoofer,so does that need its own plug? Plz advize

A:Solved: Speaker channels/plz define??

2 channel is left and right, also known as stereo. 2.1 is left, right, and a sub woofer for bass. At best, this could simulate surround. 5.1 is front left, front right, rear left, rear right, center speaker, and sub woofer. This can produce true surround sound.

As for integrated sound, that would depend on which sound chip the motherboard has and what it supports.

Typically, a 2.1 system will have filters in it so that the bass is only going to the sub woofer, but will use the same plug as the normal stereo.

Hey Guys -
Hope this is the correct forum to post this into - wasn't 100% sure.
I'm used to creating transform files (MST) to accompany MSI installers, but in the past have stuck to the basics of changing existing options in the "Property" table.  I'm in a scenario now where I need to specify a value for a parameter which
doesn't exist in the common places.
Below is the installation string currently used to install an EXE to install the application in question.  When executed, it extracts an MSI which it passes the strings below to.  I'm needing to implement all of the strings listed into a transform
so that it can simply be installed using a basic string like "msiexec.exe /i "setup.msi" TRANSFORMS="setup.mst" /qn

When viewing the MSI in Orca, most of the parameters are already in "Property" ("IN_PROFILENAME" & "IN_SERVER_NAME") or "Feature" ("ADDLOCAL" options) where I can easily change the default values.
However, "INSTALLDIR" is not in either of them yet referenced multiple times in multiple tables.  I searched the MSI for "Program Files" as it's in the ... Read more

Hey guys, I'm in need of some knowledge here.. Is it possible that a motherboard's chipset defines whether it supports SLi or Crossfire? If so, can any of you guys let me know which supports which?

Also on a side note, how can one know whether both PCI-E slots run at x16 bandwidth when both have cards inserted or if they rearrange into both x8/x8 (if not already specified in description)? Thanks in advance to any of you who can help me out .

A:Mobo Chipsets Define Crossfire or SLI?

Yes, normally only NVIDIA's nForce chipsets support SLI and Intel's X series and some of their P series chipsets support Crossfire. There are two exceptions to this, namely the DX5400XS (otherwise known as "Skulltrail") motherboard which supports SLI and Crossfire, and some motherboards based on Intel's latest X58 chipset which also support SLI and Crossfire.

As for the PCI-E slots running at x8+x8, don't bother. There are no cards that utilize the maximum bandwidth allotted by PCI-E 1.1, let alone 2.0, which is the PCI-E specification you'll find on mobos with newer chipsets like the Intel P45 or nForce 7xx series chipsets. In any case, these newer motherboards feature both of the PCI-E 2.0 slots running at x8 each, which is equal to two PCI-E 1.1 slots running at full speed, more than enough bandwidth for any card.

Hi All,

I have an internal wifi card and a USB one.

I have two APs,
Adapter Name = WifiPh, SSID = AP1 - connects to Internet via tethered phone
Adapter Name = WifiLAN SSID = AP2 - connects to local wired LAN router

On my laptop (win8.0) it shows
AP1 <-- Set Connect Automatically
AP2 <-- Set Connect Automatically

Providing both Adapters are active then it works as required. But, if the WifiPh is it not running (phone off, flat battery) then it connects WifiPh+AP2 and that is not good as the Gateways are totally different.

Is there some way I can force WifiPh to ONLY ever connect to AP1 and similarly, force WifiLAN to ONLY ever connect to AP2?

You could try turning off Broadcast SSID then delete/forget the network you don't want to connect to. If I'm understanding correctly.

I'm getting an error when I define a named range using the name box in Excel 2003 SP3, started after a software update. Comes up with "Can't Find project or library" and brings in the references form. Have I lost a link or setting somewhere as seems ok on other pc's on a shared network.

A:Excel - Using Name Box to define ranges error

Does the word "missing" appear before any of the references in the list that pops up?

Okay firstly I'm following a tutorial from this link

I follow it step by step and it comes to a point where I have to make my text as a brush. I go to Edit>>Define Brush Preset, but it doesn't allow me to select it. Only Define Pattern is available. I rasterize the text in Layer>>Rasterize>>Type and it still doesn't work.

Watch the video to get an understanding of what I'm on about. Is there a way to fix this?

If not.

Is there a way for me to restart my settings on photoshop incase some settings don't allow me to do it?

Hi everyone!
I'm getting started with programming in windows. I have a lot of experience in ubuntu, but I'm getting hung up trying to define environment variables in windows 10. I'm using a software that wants me to define a variable as the path to my autoexec.bat file.
I know in windows 10 I should be able to go my environment variables via the control panel and define this variable. However, I don't have  an autoexec.bat file in my system.
I made a point to log in as the administrator, show all hidden files, and I've even manually tried to follow other paths people have posted to their autoexec.bat in my own system (thinking it might be called something else). Still, no results.
I apologize for how ridiculous my questions is about to sound, but how do I define a variable as the path to the "windows 10 version" of an autoexec.bat file?
Thanks a million! I appreciate the help.

Hello, We have home networking enabled on two pc in our home. My roomate and I freely share files in many shared folders. When My roomate formatted his computer he created an extended partition (Drive D:\) on his computer. This is where all his shared folders are. I am sitting at his computer right now trying to figure things out. I have full access to his pc and he even set me up an account on it to freely use. no passwords since we share alot of apps and things. (cool roomate).

Anyways on my computer in my room, when I click View My network Places....
I can see his shared folders. One of the main ones is named \\Hal9000\25gigity and the other is named \\Hal9000\SharedDocs.

Two questions:

1> I am first off wondering what the double \\ slashes mean?

2> After a bit of digging I realized that these shared folders are on drive D: on my roomates computer.

So the question is... why is it, when I run a search on D: (roomates computer) for the name Hal9000 or 25gigity no search results are found? Folder options have been configured to show hidden files. But I think I am trying to overthink this.

PS: I look in explorer on Drive D: also the name Hal9000 or 25Gigity are nowhere to be found. Or for that matter anywhere even with a full computer search..... (pulling my hair out over this one)
Where can I find these names??? Help! Thks

A:Solved: Please help define the double backslash \\ in windows

"Hal9000" is your roommate's computer's name. To find it when on his machine, right click My Computer, click on Properties, and look in the Computer Name tab.

The double backslash indicates that a computer name, or IP address, follows.

The single backslash separates computer/folder/file names in a path.

"SharedDocs" and "25gigity" are the "share" names of shared folders. To find them via search on his machine, you have to search for "Shared Documents" or whatever is the actual name of the "25gigity" folder.

Programs, in general, have removed the prompt for a customization option e.g. "Add to Start Menu."  Consequently, many programs change Personalizations which are either noticed post-install or creep up due to performance issues.  Firefox updates are also culprits i.e. change my profile by modifying the toolbar.  I'm looking to at least prompt to avoid these surprises post-installation.  Ideally, I'd prefer to restrict applications from summarily adding to the start menu or placing an icon on the desktop or adding to the taskbar, etc.  The online documents I've seen refer to removal after changes are made, but I want to pre-empt this "take-over."
I'm a Win 7 32 bit recent recruit and a formal comfortable Win XPer.

A:Define prompt before apps make changes e.g. Startup

IMO...unless you have access to the installation routine used by the specific program developer...your only alternative to control what is installed is to read carefully options provided.
Browsers vary in what they install without permission...installing any toolbar is just asking for trouble, IMO, which is why I prefer IE over other browsers.
XP is no different than any other version of Windows in that respect, IMO.  XP does not provide those options, they are inherent in the specific program install routines, IMO.

Reading descriptions in the knowledge base or in forums like this part of the steps suggested is often to run SFC (System File Checker), specifically to run SFC /SCANNOW as admin to check and repair corrupted files.

I have had issues with that program already on my previous systems (a Lenovo ThinkPad and an MS Surface Pro 3), i.e. it ALWAYS showed "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. ..." Since any repair option also always fails, this tool is essentially useless under Windows 10, as it ALWAYS reports issues that it can't fix. Maybe that is just a stupid trick so that MS in case of issues can always claim, the user installed some virus, but I doubt that. I rather assume that this tool is buggy!

Due to this prior experience I ran this SFC command immediately after unpacking and switching on my new MS Surface Pro 4 for the first time and after having completed its initial setup (choosing time, keyboard, location etc.). I.e., SFC was essentially the very first action on my brand new SP4 and - as expected - it reported the very same error right there and then! So, Windows 10 on a brand new SP4 is already corrupted out of the box?!? Again - I doubt that!

Since there is practically 100% positively nothing corrupted on this machine: is there a way to reset this tool? I.e. make it accept the current setup as baseline and as non-corrupted. Only unapproved diffs (i.e. files not part of that baseline) and not installed via... Read more

I used to have a program that makes this change but I can't figure out what its name was. I re-installed Windows 7 on my machine and forgot to save its installation file.

It's a plain, all gray and squarish program, with a menu at the left and the corresponding options at the right pane. I has a lot of cool intuitive menus for everything one wants to change in Windows 7. I thought it was a TweakUI from Microsoft, but it looks like there's no such thing.

I just tried a program called Ultimate Windows Tweaker but that's a different one that doesn't have the option written at the title, and is also less organized IMO.

Anyone knows that this program is - please, let me know. Thanks a lot

When will Microsoft legal define the life cycle of a device & Windows as a service?

I already know people opinions on these subjects. This will tell me if I even buy a new computer several years later using windows 10 or windows 10.99999

It will also tell me if I will upgrade to windows 10 (Maybe) or Keep windows 7.

What does Microsoft have to do with the life cycle of a device ?

Nobody tells you to upgrade to 10 or keep 7, that is your decision and no one elses.

My fathers laptop screen seems to have gotten a crack at the bottom. It doesn't affect the rest of his screen, and he needs to work over Christmas before returning home, where he'll get a replacement. As a temporary solution, I've moved the trask bar to the top of the screen, and reduced the resolution. It has helped a bit, so the computer is at least usable.

However, he's going to be making a newsletter for his company over the christmas, which he needs the entire screen for, he says. I was wondering anyone knew of any applications that would allow him to define what area of the monitor is used to render the screen, like an app that basically fools windows into thinking that the monitor only goes from point x to point y (in height).

I tried googling a bit, but searching for "adjust screen area" is so broad it's hard to find anything even remotely useful.
