Extremly slow computer

Q: Extremly slow computer

I have a compaq laptop with windows[I'm assuming]. I have downloaded a file using torrents and I recently downloaded photofiltre.

For some reason my laptop is running very slow. I've run AVG and McAfee and it has said there are no viruses only tracking cookies.

Is there anyway to make my laptop faster? I'm not sure what's slowing it down but we really have no huge files on it.

Whenever I try and watch youtube videos or any videos it laggs and stops.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok so, first of all im alex, this is my first post on this forum you guys have got

i have just yesturday bought an Acer 5536-644G32MN Laptop which is running vista.

i have a dialup internet connection (ha ha, please dont tell me to just get broadband)
which on my desktop computer running windows XP works fine,

Yesturday when i tried dialing up to my connection useing the inbuilt modem in my laptop, it connected but i noticed it was quite slow,
as in would take a few minutes to load google,
i went out for the day because i had other things to do,
when i came home later i tried the internet again, and it was working fine, just as well as it works on this desktop computer im on now.

now tonight when i tried connecting to the internet again it was realy really slow again, it would say its connected fine and running at 52kb but it wasnt loading pages
and 4 out of 5 times it would fail to sign into msn, and when it did sign in it woudl take a few minutes to show people online and then a minute later it would lose the connection to msn and sign out.
very frustrating
the inbuilt modem is a 56k ITU v.92 wake on ring ready (in the book it says that)

can anyone shed some light on the situation

i ahve tried disabling the mcaffee firewall on my laptop but that made no difference,

im not sure if this is a vista problem or something else

any tips?

A:Internet Running extremly slow (new computer)

Hi Alex, welcome to Tech Support Forums, First of all..... Get broadband :) Im just kidding, however that would solve your problem :P Have you contacted your ISP at all? They may need you to add some modem strings so your modem and isp can 'play nicely' that happens alot with software based modems, which are in most laptops.

Hi,

I am posting due to my Dad's work computer running extremly slow. The mouse movement is very jumpy, programs take an extremly long time to load and run much slower than my own computer, and the start-up is extremly slow. My sister often uses the computer for myspace etc, and I'm sure that shes been to a few dodgy sites that have caused the computer to slow down.

I was considerring buying more RAM (its on 1gb DDR at the moment), however it is not running any intensive processes (Symantec antivirus corporate ed., itunes and printer software are the main things running) andI'd rather see if a simple software fix can be implmented.

Attached is a Hijackthis log. There is no urgent need for a response, as there are likely higher priority requests from other people. Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Hello. I work as a help desk technician for the Alaska State Legislature. I have exhausted all available resources from work trying to revive my home laptop. I am running windows XP on a roughly 1.7 Ghz processor with about 756 Mb of ram. I don;t have a slow boot, but after windows initialization I expierence 5 minutes if inoperable time as programs load and then it takes several minutes for Netscape to load after that, I only use IE and Netscape for surfing. Here are the things that I have tried:

Updated all the drivers
Updated Java and Flash.
Checked my internet speed (3 times) and it is running at the speed I have contracted with the provider.
Ran Advanced System Care 8 & CCleaner.
Ran the windows troubleshooter.
In my Control Panel- Action Center I get a message that says;
Microsoft JVM is not working properly because it isn't compatible with this version of Windows.
Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated

A:Extremly slow

RAM: 2815 MbClick to expand...

3GB of RAM would be 3072MB, video is using 256MB (1MB unaccounted for)
You need to increase the RAM to 4GB. Even though a 32 bit version of Windows can only use about 3.5MB, you will notice the increse.
I've made sure all our Windows 7 computers are running 4GB. I've talked a friend into buying more RAM so two of his slow computers would be peppier. He has noticed the difference.

As far as Java, MS discontinued java with Windows 2000. You should not have MS JVM on a windows 7 computer.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version A13) dates from 2009.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.Please don't use CCleaner while we're troubleshooting.  It'll delete some of the reports/files that we use. There is a driver named uroogb.sys (in C:\Windows\System32\drivers) that isn't found elsewhere in the system.Could you please have a look at it's properties and see if there's any information on it that we don't have?I also searched Google for it and there's no record of a driver by that name there. This is suspicious and you should perform an antimalware scan with another antivirus to ensure that you're not infected. If infected, I'd suggest posting over in the Am I Infected forum:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/Please read the pinned topics at the top of the forum for instructions on how to post there.  Please update these older drivers. Dell Latitude w/ Windows XP, 25% free space. Most time it is extremly slow (like today), while other times it moves along at a respectable speed. The only thing that seems to help is running Lavasoft (just ran and did a complete restart) but not always. It took me about 1.5 hrs to login to techguy, print the Welcome Guide (oh that was painful), get registered, etc. then do a quick search in the forums b-4 posting this question.

I believe there are a lot of programs/applications running in the background that could be removed but I do not know what is required to stay running. Am I barking up the wrong tree or will this speed up things?

The laptop sets beside a Jurasik (sp?) Park model (Windows 98) desktop that won't die and just keeps plugging away at top speed. I need the same from my laptop.

Any suggestions appreciated (and please be specific on actions to perform as I am an end user, not a tech head). Thanks...

A few months ago I noticed it was registering that the hard drive was almost full, which I found odd as I couldnt locate any extremly large files. I havent used it much and now it takes hours to get it going. Is there and easy way to search for files stored that are over a certain size? Start here please
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/

Clean boot the machine using the manual method and GO ONLY as far as STEP 3 pls. Do not proceed to step 4.

The go to this link below from MIcrosoft and in Control Panel add and remove programs, uninstall any programs you KNOW beyond doubt that you do not use.
Having done that run a disk cleanup.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/improveperf.mspx

Having done that go My computer, right click the hard drive , click properties and post the info re the capacity and free space.

On your reply please include details of your anti-virus installed.

If the computer is running with a noticeable improvement to allow you to doanload and run items then please do as below.

Please click http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

DO NOT CLICK FIX or any other buttons or tabs pls. Hi-Jack is an extremely powerful tool and can with just the wrong mouse clicks cause havoc.

Now please run HiJack again, but this time click on Main Menu, then click on Open Misc Tools section, then click on Open Uninstall Manager, then click on Save List. and do the same as above please to copy and paste that result to your reply.

Hi,

I have this acer laptop which is quite a manance. It gets very slow as soon as I start Windows XP (Professional.) The cursor stucks while moving and you just can't do anything. Even when I press and hold the power button to stop the machine it stops after 20 to 40 seconds where as normally it takes no more than 5 seconds.

Also, there are two drives C and D drive on the harddisk. When I double click D drive an 'Open With' window opens up asking which program do I want to open the file with!. When I right click it the first option on the popup menu is "Auto".

Since it was impossible to operate the mchine in normal mode I have taken HiJackThis log from safe mode.

I was recently infected with some kind of Trojan, and other malicious items. Description of infection - I was nearly always using 100% of my cpu, I had confirmed threats running (nsvc32.exe etc... That one is still running, actually. AVG wont do anything about it. I just stopped it in Task Mannager.) on Task Manager. I deleted Mozzila Firefox because that is where the download originated. I then went to System Restore to fix the problem the easy way, and when I looked, all of my restore points had been deleted. After a quick panic attack, I thought that I would be able to go into IE and find solutions, but as soon as I tried, IE closed. This happened every time. I then went on my moms laptop and Google searched each process running. I ended the ones that were confirmed threats, and then turned them off in the startup programs menu. I had Ad-Aware installed, so I ran a scan. It was working for a minute or two, when my computer all of a sudden re-started. It did this every time I attempted a scan. After a prolonged panic attack, i grabbed a flash drive and downloaded AVG with my moms Laptop. I installed it and ran a full scan, and deleted all the threats. I then did another one just to be sure. So far, my performance has for the most part been fixed, except for one thing. The internet connection is the slowest Ive ever seen. It would probably be considered bad in 1987. Right now, i can download at 400-500 bp/s. I used to be DL'ing at 79 Kbp/s, or so. The browser itself is f... Read more

Hi there:
3 days ago when I was trying to download a Tv show episode from http://thepiratebay.org/ (I won't do it again in a long time :() with uTorrent my computer froze, I restarted and when I oppened uTorrent my computer froze again. Then I scanned my drive for malware and norton found a backdoor thing and a tracing cookie; it deleted both. Then my internet speed went from 2Mbps to .2Kbps (ridiculous). And said that I had no connection (wireless). I reset de modem, reinstalled drivers etc. but nothing worked. I am writing this on my ubuntu partition. I even formatted the vista partition with windows 7 RC 64bit and the problem was solved, then, when I moved my files from the windows.old folder. my internet speed went to .2Kbps again! (on vista). I did ipconfig/release,renew and it said it cannot proceed because the specified file could not be found? that was weird.

Those programs do not work in my OS; Anyways the problem solved by itself.
Thanks though

A:Java running extremly slow

Start with an uninstall, reboot and reinstall of the latest Java.

A thorough virus scan (see the Spyware section) would also be a GOOD thing.

Hi
Thanks firstly for taking the time to read my issue.

My PC (originally running Windows 7) was running really slow, it would sometimes take 5 minuets to action a mouse click (IE close an app, click a button etc) I did what I could with my Norton AV but after 5 days I couldn't get to the bottom of this issue. I eventually ran CCleaner, didn't help, ran windows update. This started with over 100 updates as I had turned live update off. Got down to one file which wouldn't update.

Last update I decided to try and update to Windows10. Hoping it could repair the issue.

I have also tried running the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool but because if the go slow issue it does not get to complete a scan before stalling & eventual reluctant reboot. It will perform a quick scan without crashing but that only finds one infected file (No idea what the file is from MRT) Even when running a full scan, before it locks up it says it has found 3 infected files so I figure a full scan is in order.

One last note: I called Norton help line & after remote operating my PC for a few minutes the guy informed me I had a rundll.exe file that was causing the issue. He said it was disabling a lot of things on my PC. Unfortunately the same guy then went on to try and skin me of AU$400 to help fix the problem. Sorry but I don't have $400. I have a sick PC and hope fading fast.

I have learnt several things from this. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
