I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:cant change bios options

Exodus777, welcome to the forum. HP limits the amount of BIOS settings that can be changed.  You can use the Recovery media that you made to Reset the computer.  Also, you could use the Disk Management to extend the partition next to Z.

Hello! A friend of mine was recently gifted an X120e by her employer when they were upgrading their tech. There is no password to get into the BIOS menu, but some options simply are not selectable within the menu, it just skips over them! I want to try to boot from a USB drive to remove the GNU GRUB version 1.99 that's installed, but it will not let me change any boot options and I'm not sure how I can get those settings unlocked to be able to boot from disk. Hoping for a few ideas on how to get this little guy going, would appreciate any input!

Hi everyone, thanks for looking.
Im running into a particular problem that I cant seem to find the reasons or the settings.

I watch HBO GO (i have a valid subscription) on my Windows 7 Home laptop and use an HDMI cable to connect my TV.

Scenerio 1:
If I leave the close the lid power option on hibernate, I must leave the laptop open and, when I connect the HDMI the TV, it becomes my monitor and I view as the monitor and watch anything full screen no problem.

Scenerio 2:
I change the power option on the lid close to "do nothing". When the HDMI cable is hooked up, if the laptop is open it uses the laptop display, if its closed it displays through the HDMI/TV. This is perfect and exactly what I want.
I can watch as the monitor no problem HOWEVER, if I choose full screen, I get gray borders and the "Full Screen" is not full and just centered.

I can not for the life of me figure out why and Im going crazy.
Does anyone know why the power option would have an effect on this and what settings I could change?

Many Thanks in Advance!!!

A:External display settings change when Power options change?

Check to see what resolution your laptop's display is at, what the external TV resolution is when you connect it to your laptop, and MAYBE what resolution the videos you're watching are. This just sounds like a resolution issue. If the TV is at a larger resolution than your laptop's resolution, change the TV's resolution to the size your laptop is at. Then try watching a video to see what happens. Hope this helps.

In the Dell XPS 13 (9360). Using the latest BIOS 1.3.2 (but the old previous BIOS version was the same).

If you go to the "Fn Lock Options" under BIOS, there are 2 options, they are listed as:
Lock Mode Disable/Standard   = The F1-12 Keys behave as function keys
Lock Mode Enable/Secondary = The F1-12 Keys control the secondary functions.

These options are Swapped. If you disable the "Fn Lock" and set the mode to "Lock Mode Disable/Standard", log into Windows, and Press F1, it will then MUTE the system. Even though it should act like an "F1" Key.
If you go back into BIOS, set the mode to "Lock Mode Enabled/Secondary", log into the system and Press F1, then the Help comes up.

The options are swapped on these two configure options. Please update the text in the BIOS to match the appropriate configuration. Thanks. I've included a ScreenShot of the BIOS options. "Fn Lock" does do what it describes (disables Fn-Esc). Doesn't matter if u turn this on or off. If you have it set up as I do below, the Fn Keys are set for the proper Function (F1-F12) operation. However, the text says it should do its secondary functions in this mode.

Trying to set up a FP monitor, and in the process I tried changing the bios setting from onboard AGP (flat panel wasn't working with this, had to add another video adapter card) to PCI, thinking I could change it back if ineffective. But now my display on the monitor that WAS working is black, so I can't undo my mistake.

How to undo damage??

A:bios change, now can't view monitor to change back

If you remove the battery on the mothernoard
for a minute or two, the BIOS loses it's
current settings and goes back to the defaults
that will work on any system. You'll have to
let it auto-detect hard drives and everything.

I made a clean installation and downloaded necessary drivers from Lenovo's support site.
It has been a long time since I have had this laptop, so I decided to update the BIOS as well.
The updated BIOS version is B0CNA0WW. I'm uncertain of my previous version, most likely the version that the laptop was shipped with, as this is the first time I updated my BIOS.
Is it possible to revert to previous BIOS version without any further problems?
And if not, how can I get rid of the utterly displeasing BIOS splash in the boot? Or maybe change the splash image?
Mod's Edit: Additional information added to Subject line for clarity of issue.

A:Revert back to previous BIOS or change displeasing BIOS splash screen

I would leave your current BIOS alone.
Maybe another user can help in the BIOS screen change.
Note: Bios is unsigned, you may get a warning message during download.

I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0 on windows xp. somehow, when I typed a search preference in the address bar, it always went to something called quick. which I hated, after a few days, I figured out how to delete it. now when I type something in the address bar, it goes through yahoo. and that sucks! because half the time it will never bring up the links, it has some kind of error, and you can only view the first page, if you go to the next page of searches it never brings it up.

what I have noticed is, when you click on on the link, for example instead of going to www.computerhope.com it will goto to this

it has all that crap in between, and half the time it doesn't work. and like I said, you can never goto the next page of searches. so does anyone know how to change the default search? It's much easier just to type in the address bar, if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I am the administrator on my computer, yet I can't access the main customization options, such as power options, user accounts, system, personalization, or performance information. I've tried disconnecting from any internet since it may be a system administrator's settings from the network that might have been the problem, but I still couldn't. I just want to have access to the things that I SHOULD have access to. I am the only one with an account on this computer.

As a side note: This computer came loaded with Vista and just recently I loaded Win7 onto it. I was the administrator on Vista, but I don't know if something got messed up in the process of switching to Win7? Maybe?

My computer suddenly started to crash alot almost a week ago and now it crashes sometimes before windows starts loading. After almost a week of testing and reading my theory is that the power supply to the RAM memory has went crazy. However the problem is that the BIOS gives me no option to change RAM voltage (guess it's a warranty thing). So how should I fix this? Is it possible to reset these things or make the computer search the right vaues again?

Because what's strange with my "theory" is how the RAM voltage settings suddenly changed. Can it also be so that the hardware is destroyed? What should I replace then?

My motherboard is a Fujitsu Siemens MS-7450VP.

Thanks in advance!

I have Win XP HOME with Internet Explorer 6. When I wanted to go to INTERNET OPTIONS..I got a dialogue box stating I cannot get into it as I do NOT have administrative rights!

I once had this problem before, as I had/have Spybot-Search & Destroy software on my PC, and all I had to do was change a setting in it, and ALL was AOK.

Now on this new other PC, with SPYBOT s/w, I tried to log int it, and all it kept doing was SCANNING my PC for SPYWARE. For the life of me, I can not get into the SPYBOT s/w...except for it to SCAN my PC when I clicked on the icon. I REMOVED IT from the PC PROGRAM SELECTOR + then REINSTALLED IT, and same thing happens. I then tried REMOVING IT [successfully?] from ADD/REMOVE in CONTROL PANEL. Then rebooted. Same thing. I download a new install of SPYBOT. Do "install". Then, instead of giving me install screen, it creates it's ICONS. I click on ICON, and it SCANS my PC [for about 4 minutes]. But I cannot change anything in the program...or even get further into the program like I used to be able to do with the program on my old PC.

Any help here?

The real issue is that I cannot get into and change IE6 INTERNET OPTIONS. But I think it is related to SPYBOT. And now I cannot get into SPYBOT to fix things...even after removing + reinstalling it!

Please help?

A:cannot change IE6 internet options

Hi...I had the same problem with Spybot...what happened is that I set it to start with windows...then it scans and wont let me in the progam. I tried what you did and no luck....When I uninstalled for the 3rd time...I then used jv16 power tools..and cleaned the registary...then went into search in Windows and deleted any files left behind...When I reinstalled Spybot I was able to access the program and change it to manually start program and got my IE options back

The free jv16 program is here

Hope this helps

I am running 500 MHz CPU and 512 mb's RAM with a 80 gig harddrive and XP Pro Operating system.
When I click on my computer and it brings up the explorer window this is normal but if I click inside that window on a drive such as my CD drive or one of my partitions that I created with the 80 gig harddrive it brings up a search window as if I clicked on the search option from the start menu.

If you right click the icon for the cd drive or one of the partitioned drives the right click menu shows search first, then open, then explore. also if I create a new folder on the desktop and make some sort of short cut to lets say a document file or to drive D I get the same thing it brings up the search window instead of whatever short cut I have the icon pointing to.
I do know that my computer was not doing this and it just started doing it a few days ago and I am not sure what caused it I have removed anything I installed and ran norton system works and fixed anything that was wrong. What else can I do any suggestions?
I ran adware and spybot and regseeke. It could have been one of these programs but I have run all of them before with no problems like this.

If you go to start and then click on search, this is the window that comes up when I click on a folder on my desktop, or if I click on a CD or drive partition it does not go to the folder or the hddrive it is supposed to up comes a search results window.

Thank You in advance

Hello. Thanks for the help yesterday. Got another question about dual booting. I have mostly run WinXP. But I did install Vista Home Premium and fooled around with it. But didn't like it much so uninstaled it. When I installed Win7 it must have found enough dregs to decide I wanted Dual Boot, even though I don't. In WinXP you just modify the boot.ini file. I don't see anything familier. I want to go straight to Win7.

A:How to change boot options.

So you want to remove XP from Boot Menu ? It would be better if we just disable it.We will be editing Boot Configuration Data using BCDEDIT tool. Warning : Make a backup of Boot Configuration Data (BCD) first. Improper use of this command line tool may render your computer un-bootable.To make a backup of BCD :1. Type cmd in Start Menu search box. Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as administrator2. In command prompt type, bcdedit /export c:\backup. This would save your BCD to c:\backup.If later you want to restore BCD, type bcdedit /import c:\backup after booting from Windows 7 DVD.You can follow these steps to disable dual boot menu :1. Boot into Windows 7.2 . Open command prompt with admin privileges. To do this, click on Start Menu, type cmd in search box, right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as administrator.3. In the command prompt type these pressing Enter after each line :bcdedit /default {current}
bcdedit /timeout 0 This will set Windows 7 as default OS and set timeout to 0 seconds. So at boot yuor computer will boot into Windows 7 straight.4. Restart your computer.

Hi! On my notebook (Dell Inspiron 6000, XP Home SP2) I am unable to change the logon options. When I click on user accounts >> user accounts >> change the way users log on or off, I get an error message saying that a recently installed program has stopped the ability to change this, and it offers the file dwlGina2.dll saying that can help me find the program. The thing is, I have no idea what program. I've done searches and the only resemblence of a program I could come up with (on the internet) was Replacekeys, but I don't have that program.

Can anyone suggest another way? As it stands, when the computer turns on, I need to enter my password (well, just click ok since I don't have a password) and then it turns on. If I click on start, where my name is, there is no image. And the shut down menu is changed as well.

I am at a total loss. I'd do a restore, however, it's been like this for a while, and I just happened to see a tutorial on how to change the options, so I thought I could fix it, and this is what I encountered.

Thanks for your help!

A:Unable to change logon options

I would try this -

1) go to Start/run and type in regedit and hit enter.
2) navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
3) Look for the following ans see if its a key like - Winlogon
Value = GinaDLL REG_SZ

If the Gina DLL value is present and is anything other than Msgina.dll, this probably means that a third-party product has changed this value. I would back this registry key up and then change it to what it shows above.

You also could try a system restore if you have that available and this just started happening.

So, now if I want to ensure that I am looking at hidden files, or have insight into protected OS files, I can no longer open explorer, click on Organize and click on Folder and Search Options.

I've found I have to open File Explorer, click on the View tab, find the Options button dropdown, and then choose "Change Folder and Search options".
This came up because I was trying to add a new taskbar. I right clicked on taskbar, select Toolbars, and choose New Toolbar From here, I get the "old school" explorer view (from Windows 7 without the ribbon), but the option under Organize for "Change Folder and search options" is grayed out. I thought it was just a dialog box limitation of the add toolbar wizard, so i went straight into File Explorer and failed to find the option. I actually had to Google it and figure out where they now moved the option to within the ribbon.

Remind me again as to why this is faster, better and awesome!!

A:Change Folder and Search Options

I didn't have any problems intuitively finding this dialog when I looked for it. I mean, there are only 3 tabs, and the options button is pretty prominent.

Sometimes I think people that have gotten it in their mind that they hate something deliberately blind themselves to common sense thinking so they have something to complain about.

It is interesting, however, that the file dialog is part old and part new.

Hello Melissa,

The "My...." folders with shortcut arrows on them are not real folders, but only junction points for backwards compatibility for older programs that point to you real "My..." user folders. I would recommend to set you hidden files to no longer show so that you do not mistakenly use or do something to them.Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
In your screenshots above, you are only viewing files from the "Music" library on only your computer. Each default library includes your "My..." user folder and "Public" folder for it. I am afraid to say that I am not quite understanding this. Checking and unchecking items in msconfig does start/stop programs from starting when your computer starts. Anything which is unchecked in msconfig is just a backup, and is not causing any harm, so I would recommend not to delete it.

However, msconfig settings should be permanent, and so you should only ever have to change settings once, and not on every boot. Is msconfig resetting itself to the default every boot?

Thanks a lot!

Using Office XP Pro, with Windows XP. All updates and virus protection are current.

Everytime I try to change any options in Excel (general, view, security, etc.) I get the following error message: "Cannot access directory F:/excel"

Every so often when I need to autorecover something I get the following error msg:
"Microsoft cannot save AutoRecover info to F:/excel. Please check the network connection or change the location on the Save tab of the Tools, Options dialog."

When Excel was originally installed it was done from the server located on the F drive.
Since then, the server has been changed and that drive has been deleted.

Is there anyway to change the default location other than in Options? Because right now I'm caught in loop.

Or, do I need to uninstall and reinstall the whole app?

This is my first post here, so hi to everyone.
I just got an ASUS X401a Notebook and I want to use a flash drive to boot from Linux.
I need to change the sequence in the BIOS so that the flash drive is first choice to boot from.
I have no problem accessing the BIOS utility, but it allows me to alter only some settings. Those in blue colored font I can change those in black font I cannot. What drive to boot from first is in black and not adjustable.
I used command line to work as admin and I also set up a password for admin in the BIOS to access the BIOS utility, but still no go; some things are allowed to be changed some aren't.

Any help is appreciated.

A:BIOS: Can access BIOS utility, but cannot change settings.

Is it asking for a password or something?

I errantly switched the BIOS setting from Raid-AHCI to IEDI while attempting to allow my system to recognize a newly installed SSD.  The plan was to clone my HDD to the SSD as the boot drive, but it wasn't seen in windows.  Initially, was able to see it in the BIOS settings.  Long story short, I switched from Raid-AHCI to IEDI and have not been able to boot the PC since.  On boot, the pc turns on and the fans for the power supply and NVIDIA cards spin, but there is nothing visual taking place on the monitor. It's as if the devices are getting power, but the motherboard doesn't know they are there.  Tried clearing the CMOS (unplugged, took out CMOS battery, held reset button) and that didn't seem to make a difference.  There is supposed to be a "recovery" jumper on the MB (E15), but the pins seem to be missing on my motherboard, so that's not an option.  I'm pretty sure that if I can get the MB back to Raid-AHCI mode, it should respond for me again.  Unfortunately, without access to the BIOS on boot, I have no idea how to do that.  Any and all suggestions are welcome.  Thanks in advance.
