Up key not working, Brightness stuck on low settings (FN+UP)

Q: Up key not working, Brightness stuck on low settings (FN+UP)

I have a dell latitude d620 and one day the up and left keys magically stopped working.. later on I had the brightest idea to see whats the lowest level of brightness possible, now I'm pretty much screwed because I cannot get the brightness back up to normal (which is a pain in the rear end) using the FN+UP combination.

I've searched the web trying to find a solution and cannot find anything, any solutions?

Help is very appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to Seven Forums Nurein615. I think you can adjust it in BIOS with the down right keys (I hope they work!). Here is a (poorly made ) video that will illustrate how. Basically, F2 at boot, then video settings, then brightness. Don't go too bright as you have no left key to turn it back down! Good luck!

Hi, I have a np9770 sager laptop and about a day ago the brightness settings no longer work and external monitors I plug in no longer work either. My version of 8.1 is fully updated with windows update. Nothing as far as I know changed but here is what I have tried to fix it:

1. Running driver sweeper in safe mode and reinstalling most recent drivers from nvidia.com
a. Running driver sweeper again in safe mode and installing drivers from the sagernotebook.com website
2. Uninstalling and scanning for hardware changes fo generic monitor in device manager
3. Running sfc /scannow in command prompt, nothing wrong
4. Updating chipset drivers from both the intel.com website and sagernotebook.com website
5. Rolling back windows to a restore point on the 12th of September, about 5 days ago
6. Creating another user account
7. Verified adaptive brightness is off in advanced power settings.

Odd things I found:
1. In device manager the gtx 980m display adapter has a warning triangle on it and this message when I double click on it:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
This has been constant throughout the whole ordeal
2. Whenever connecting a monitor as soon as I plug it in the monitor lights up as if it were going to work and just says hdmi not connected then goes to sleep. Nothing is detected in device manager.

A:Brightness settings stop working after hibernation or sleep Windows 7

Hello Nikak mate one of my machines is a G750JM ROG and I find most little irritations like that are fixed with a simple run of these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs - you can leave out the /r switch if you think it not necessary.

Edit Forgot try updating the NVidia driver too

Hi, I am having some issues regarding my laptop's brightness. Firstly, when I turn my laptop on, the brightness is always on pitch black so I can't see the screen. I have been on to all the settings and put the brightness as max for both when it is plugged into power, and not. And yet each time I switch it on, the brightness isn't on and the screen is completely black. Secondly, my brightness buttons are the wrong way round, so the button I should press to reduce the brightness actually increases it, and the button I should press to increase the brightness actually decreases it.Again I have looked in the settings and can't find anything there to change them - I haven't downloaded or installed anything that should have changed them, I literally use the laptop for microsoft office and the internet.  Please help

So my brightness is stuck on high. Seems like a simple fix right? wrong. It will not adjust using the brightness buttons or in display settings. In display settings the option to adjust as well as night mode are grayed out or disappeared. I've googled what to do and tried all of those options.
1. turn computer on and off again. didn't work
2. right click on battery and manually adjust brightness through windows mobility. didn't work. Well, the dial moved to 0 but the brightness didn't adjust at all.
3. I've looked in device manager to uninstall/reinstall the display adapters thing, but theres no display adapter in my device manager! That's a problem within itself right?
4. I've reset my PC already twice and it still will not adjust.
Please help!

Hello

I am having trouble with my HP nx6120 running Windows XP. Basically it happened like this; One day, when the laptop was plugged in, i turned the brightness all the way down using the Fn+F9 hotkey. Now it wont go back up (usually Fn+F10 hotkey). This is very frustrating as i can barely see the screen.

I know its not the lamp, because (and this is very annoying) when i unplug the power adapter, the screen goes to full brightness! Unfortunatly the battery life is about 12 minutes, so this laptop usually remains plugged in.

Please HELP! I can barely see the screen. Does anyone know of a 3rd party program or any another way (other than the hotkeys) to increase screen brightness

Thanks so much in advance

Hi all, So, I installed windows 7 64bit on my T500 last night. I've downloaded the win 7 version of  the thinkvantage system update software and installed everything, powermanager and all.  The problem:When i am in High performance graphics mode, the display brightness doesn't change... ever. Function keys don't work, the power management slider doesn't work. It is very frustrating to say the least. My work around: (this is annoying but works)When in low graphics mode, the function keys DO work. I can change the brightness and then switch back to high performance graphics. It's really bizarre!  Does anyone know why this would be happening? I've got all the latest drivers from system update & tried reinstalling the hot key drivers with no luck. I've played with every power setting i can think of, nothing seems to change the screen brightness on high performance graphics. Suggestions welcome

Usually the function buttons on the keyboard will do the trick, or the sliders in the taskbar/Control panel.

I am currently trying to run two games, Unreal Tournament 3 and Alien Swarm.
Here are my specs.
Intel quad core Q660
Nvidia 8800GT
4 gb Ram
Windows 7 Ultimate

The only problem with my system is that currently I'm using an old monitor... it has a refresh rate of only 60.
I am using the Nvidia drivers with the Nvidia Control panel and such.
The problem I'm having running these games is that they are just too dark :/
I mean the games themselves run smooth but I can barely see anything in them because the Games own brightness settings are too low even at max brightness for my computer apparently. When I use the Nvidia panel and turn up the brightness, I can see fine but in-game that brightness is resetted to the game default one. I want to know how to override the brightness settings of those games and use the brightness level of the Nvidia Panel. I somehow did it with counter strike and now its nice and bright but I really don't know the procedure.

A:Brightness settings on games.

In nvidia control panel for your desktop display properties, select use nvidia
settings instead of use application settings.
Then adjust your desktop brightness.
You will need to lower it to use the normal desktop brightness when not
playing games.
It's a pain that nvidia took out the 3D brightness and gamma settings.

We ordered about 20 of the Lenovo 10AY tiny desktops for our businesses and I've found a consistent problem with the Lenovo tiny computers and NEC monitors. Whenever i pair the lenovo 10AY units with our NEC monitors in our business, users have constant monitor brightness issues. I have updated to the latest version of Lenovo power manager software on several desktops and the monitors still will not stay at 100% brightness after a log off/reboot. I've also tried downloading the latest NEC monitor drivers. still no luck. Here's how it goes: - deploy new lenovo 10AY- log into workstation- NEC monitor goes to lowest brightness setting- manually set brightness back to 99%-double check lenovo power manager settings to ensure brightness is set to 100%, dynamic brightness control is disabled, timers are off ETC..-log off computer- log back into computer - 5 mins later, monitor goes to lowest brightness setting- go into monitor menu and manually change brightness back to 99%-REPEAT above steps every day  on the other hand. i found a DELL monitor and a SAMSUNG branded monitor and plugged the same computers into them. No dimming occurs. Power manager settings work fine. This is specific to NEC Multicync monitors. The exact model i tested was a NEC Multisync EA244WMI LED

Well, I have installed Windows 8 on my laptop, but was wondering if there is a way to lock the screen brightness.
The reason being is that family members constantly mess with the brightness and sometimes leave it at 100% when using the battery. I basically want to extend the life of the battery if it is possible by disabling or locking the screen brightness at a certain level.

Hello Ion,

Sure, you could specify a default setting for them in group policy (gpedit.msc), at the location below.

Code:

Hi
I have an Asus laptop running 8.1
my laptops screen has been working perfectly fine as far as i know. a few weeks ago the laptop itself fell and the hinge-part that connects the physical screen to the physical keyboard came undone, together with the wifi antennae. i got all of that fixed. i think since then, my brightness wont adjust. it stays on the brightest setting, whether i use the Fn key or go to she settings screen manually.

i tried to download an ATK package which was suggested elsewhere, but the comptuer said it cant downlaod it because its already installed.

i tried to search for already existent drivers manually but that did nothing.

Any ideas? is it possible its a hardware issue, or unlikely?

thank you!

A:Screen brightness stuck after unplug during sleep

Quick solution: Close the lid and open it back. Now you'll be able to change the brightness. AFAIK, there's no other solution to this problem.

Also make sure closing the lid doesn't make it sleep or hibernate or shutdown (go to Power options > Click 'Choose what closing lid does' on the left and then on the next page, select 'Nothing' for both AC power and battery)

It's a Windows 7 bug.

Hi, From the posts I've already read I know this is a common issue. However, none of the suggested solutions helped yet, that's why I'm writing this post.Windows 10, originally used to be Windows 8 which was later updated to Windows 8.1 when the update came out. Have been having the issue either from Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. The issue is, as the topic says: my screen brightness is stuck on either the brightest or the dimmest (usually the latter one). The brightness keys won't work whatsoever. The only way I can switch brightness is via the display parameters - from one extreme to the other. When I adjust the brightness in Settings > Display, either it's blasting my eyes with nuclear bomb brightness or it's darker than in coal mines, regardless of what brightness I choose (it can be set on brightness 2 out of 100, but the screen will still shine on max). The issue is definitelly not related to the display itself, since it has recently been changed, but the problem has remained.  The means I tried to fix the issue are:1. Installing all kinds of drivers. Old ones, new ones, chipset ones, Intel HD Graphics 4000 ones, NVidia ones, etc. Won't help, the issue still remains.2. Modifying the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver as been advised (changing the Graphics/igdlh64.inf  PwrCons_IVB_AddSwSettings from F000 to F900). Did not help either. (I must add that for older, "original" drivers I didn't even manage to find the needed file. Driver version 9.17.10.2932... Read more

Andy, this makes it clearer versus my last reply! To fix the brightness problem, in 8.1 do this:1.) Right click on the windows icon on the bottom left hand corner. A menu pops up.2.) Click on Device Manager, then double click onDisplay Adapters and AMD Radeon HD8470D pops up. Double click on that. An AMD Properties box pops up. Click on Driver. Go down to Update driver and click on that. It may lessen brightness for the moment, so then go to Roll Back Driver and click it and that is all you need to do. Then go to setting in right hand corner, and you should be able to use the slide to change the brightness. It worked for me. I even turned off the computer, then turned it back on and the slide still works andchanges the brightness. Good luck.

Very bizarre issue. One day I noticed the screen on my C260 W8.1 desktop (my trusty home workhorse) was a bit too bright for my liking. It was the very early morning (about 5am), so it seems like a relatable situation. Here's where the problems begin: I immediately reached for the brightness controls on the unit, but it went down one notch (one from full brightness) and refused to go down any further. Tried using the slider in the Control Panel, tried restarting, didn't do anything to help. It's still refusing to change brightness. I'm curious as to how I can get the brightness controls to work again. I also noticed someone on this forum having a near-identical issue with their Z400, which also had 8.1 installed and ran on the same brand of intergrated graphics card (Intel), so I wish to ask: Is anyone else having the same issue, either on the C-Series that I'm typing this from, or any other Lenovo computer?

Since last Monday, my laptop's been through its fourth at Knowhow's facilities. I was anxious to play games like Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Gmod again, but after a minute or two of gameplay, they would both freeze. From there the screen would turn black, turn back on at full brightness, and allow me to play for a few seconds before looping the process again. The only way I could stop this was by 'Alt-F4'-ing my way out of the game, which would allow me to change my brightness.

At first, I tried updating the drivers as that could have helped, though, instead, made no difference. From there, I proceeded to do an 'express' uninstall of the drivers and anything else associated, restarted, installed the driver only, and restarted again. No success. I even tried Red Faction: Guerilla, only to be met with the same results. Weirdly, though, 2D games like Hexcells, Prison Architect and Speedrunners run flawlessly!

I'm using the 14.12 Omega drivers, according to the Raptr app.

So I am using an Acer Aspire One Netbook on Windows 7 64 bit. Recently I tried to lower my brightness using the Fn + left and right arrows and nothing happened. I tried updating my video drivers and I also updated the Acer launcher that handles the function buttons. All the other function buttons work. Then I went to adjust the brightness manually and to my surprise it is like brightness was deleted from Windows 7 completely. It is not in control panel. It's not in the god mode folder that I have. It's not under windows search. It does not dim like it used to when I unplug my netbook (I have it set to half brightness when unplugged) and the option to set brightness under power settings isn't even there anymore. The only thing I can think of is the last windows update that might have caused it. I've attached a screenshot of the updates I've recently installed. Not sure hot to handle this one but I am going nuts even using F.lux trying to work using full brightness. Somehow brightness just vanished from my system. I also will get terrible battery life because of this. Any help would be appreciated.

This happens in games too. I'll find an area too dark and change the in game brightness and bam, it just reverts back. The thing is, the slider doesn't jump back or anything, the computer just adapts the new brightness so that it looks like the standard. Here are a couple of screenshots to visualize my rambling. Notice the gamma settings and the fact that regardless of which setting I chose, the screenshot brightness is literally exactly the same. This is not a monitor issue because 1) I've turned off all adaptive measures on my TV and 2) those are screenshots, they would not display the monitor settings.

I've had a X380 for over a year, and it's worked great for the most part. A few weeks ago I got a new monitor, and ever since I first changed the brightness on the monitor while my laptop was plugged in via HDMI, I haven't been able to adjust my display settings, and my brightness setting is locked.  The brightness buttons don't work, and neither do any of the other ways of changing it. Additionally, whenever I open settings, and select "system" the settings app freezes for a few seconds, then closes entirely. By getting into other settings under "system" such as sound and notifications, I've realized that this only happens when the display settings menu tries to open.  I've tried every workaround I could find - I've reinstalled every driver related to the screen, I've hard restarted the computer and even tried to reinstall from a system recovery disk (which would quit from error anyway). If anyone has had a similar problem or knows a solution, I would love to hear it. Thanks.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my latop brightness to stay at maximum when I unplug and switch to DC. I am aware of the function key but my dilema is that it's a tablet and I don'thave access to that key when it's in tablet mode. I've looked everywhere I know to and cannot find a setting for it. Any help would be great.

A:Adjust Brightness brings up Power Plan settings!

Hello Limneos,

What build is this from?

That window is different than in the 7000 Beta build version, but it works fine here.

I'll have to come back and add screenshots to this later - if they are needed - but what I want to do is remove the inactive (and thus un-needed) brightness control and keyboard control icons in the Settings Charm panel.

These icons appear on the right side of the six available icons in the Settings Charm (Windows + I for shortcut).

Also, I'm new to this forum, and as a former IT tech, I realize that information gets lost or misplaced. If this topic needs to be moved, forgive me, and I won't mind if this is moved.

A:Remove keyboard & brightness icons in Settings Charm?

They are a part of the coding for the Metro Interface. No way to remove them.

I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 and the next day my screen went dim and I could not adjust it neither with the keyboard +/-, nor with the onscreen graphics dashboard, nor within the power settings.

How do you fix it?

A:Windows 8.1 Update Causes Lost Brightness Settings / Screen is Dim

Sometimes Windows updates will break your graphics driver. That is because Intel and NVidia do not update their graphics drivers on the same schedule that Microsoft
updates Windows, and sometimes the updates are incompatible and cause the graphics driver to do wonky things. In my case that came in the form of lost brightness settings.

I searched these forums for a fix and I could not find one, so now that I know the answer, I am sharing it here.

How do you fix it? You have to reinstall the graphics driver. This is how I did it.

I found the graphics driver install file that was already on my computer and I ran it. It reinstalled the driver in about 5 seconds and my screen brightness functionality was restored.

Where is my graphics driver install file? On my computer it is here:

D:driversVGAIntelx649.17.10.2932\Setup.exe

Yours is probably in a different but similar location depending on how it was installed and what brand it is, etc. I have a Lenovo
P400 touchscreen laptop with an Intel HD 4000 Graphics.

I've had a lot of problems with this computer's graphics and stuff being way too dark despite my monitor settings(that I set with the little wheel thingy on the monitor) of brightness and contrast being all the way. I could not figure out how to make the picture better after a lot of searching, but I tried again recently and found where to go (see first pic).

So I adjusted that stuff until I got it good. Then I saved it and checked the apply at startup box. But the problem is, it wouldn't apply the settings at startup. They were saved and everything and the box would still be checked, but the picture wasn't what I saved it as. All I'd have to do though is just select what I saved from the drop-down box but shouldn't it already be applied all the time? I'm guessing I'll have to adjust something in my System Config Utility in System Information but I dunno so I'm asking you.

I have the following issues regarding the OLED brightness When I change the display configuration, e.g. attach the yoga to a 2nd monitor via Dock, flip the notebook into tablet mode, change screen orientation, wake up from standby.... In half of all cases, the brightness is reset: It shows like 50% brightness, but the screen is turned up to 100% and I have to manually re-adjust brightness. Very annoying!OLED "power saving modes" (e.g. reducing brightness of the taskbar) aren't persistent: If I restart the device, If I change the display configuration (see above for examples) - the OLED power saving settings seem to get lost and I have to restart Lenovo Settings in order to make them work again. Very annoying as well!Using Windows 10 with most recent drivers supplied by lenovo companion. Happy to provide additional details.

Hi! I have seen a few other posts on here about havig issues with the brightness changing and have looked to them first before writing my own post. I have made sure that Enable Dynamic Brightness is turned off under the Lenovo Vantage settings and I have Change brightness automatically turned off under my system settings, but I can still still see my brightness changing when I change from light to dark backgrounds and it is getting VERY annoying. It makes reading, or doing anything on the computer for that matter, very difficult and I can't figure out why it keeps changing when I have everything turned off. I have also checked to make sure none of the drivers need updating but they are all updated and have rebooted my computer multiple times. Is anyone else having this issue or does anyone know why this is still happening?? Thanks!
