Solved: Windows Firewall turn off or leave on with COMODO Firewall?

Q: Solved: Windows Firewall turn off or leave on with COMODO Firewall?

I have COMODO firewall installed on my notebook running Vista Home Premium. Should I turn off Windows firewall? Will they conflict with each other? Other threads I searched about this didn't really answer that question.

I also have NOD32 running.
Thanks,

Preferred Solution: Solved: Windows Firewall turn off or leave on with COMODO Firewall?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently installed the freeware firewall of Comodo in my Win7 PC. However I am not too happy because of some problems and would like to remove Comodo and simply use the firewall that came with Win7 (I am using the Home Edition of Win7).

I had a hitch that probably both firewalls are somehow enabled on my Win7 PC. I went into Control Panel and turned off the bult-in Firewall of Win7 but it now show the message (or maybe the icon) that firewall is not present (EVEN though I already have COMODO installed). SO that's the first question/confusion I am facing.

The 2nd question is that how do I uninstall COMODO in a very clean manner. I remember froma long time back when I tried to remove Norton Anti-Virus and it simply refused to un-install. Will I face a similar problem when trying to remove Comodo.

Last but not least, will be very thankful if you can share tips regarding what settings I need to put in place for the Windows Firewall to work effectively. Based on what I have read, the default configuration of Win7's firewall has a lot of room for improvement and I would like it to be as secure as my favourite firewall (which I use on XP) i.e. Sygate.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Firewall Issue(s) - Windows XP Professional & Comodo Firewall Pro

Friday/December 3rd 2007: This morning I was looking at the features and settings of Comodo Firewall Pro Version 2.4.19.185. Accidentally I clicked ‘no’ when a learned prompt came up asking if I wanted to allow Avast Free Edition to connect to the net. I believe it was Avast. Anyway I figured I would uninstall and reinstall to correct the settings, no big deal, or so I thought.

When windows started back up and gave me the security alert prompt (Control Panel > Windows Security Center) and I figured no big deal. However it was saying “Comodo is not installed bla bla bla.” When I enabled XP Professional’s firewall, window’s message said, “Comodo was working, etc.”

Windows Firewall worked within normal parameters as far as I could tell otherwise. I will try to recreate issue buy uninstalling and will post detailed results later with screen shots.

Sunday/December 9th 2007: I tried recreating the incident and my results confuse me. Windows XP Professional Security Center Says “Comodo Firewall not on bla, bla, bla.” However, when I turn on XP’s firewall it says “Windows Firewall is on bla, bla, bla. So why when I turn off windows firewall does it say that “Comodo” not windows firewall is disabled?

How would I correct this?

Thank you.

Hi and thanks for viewing this thread. I hope you can help me!
I have a few questions which I will number and I hope you can answer them in detail, as it would be much appreciated. (I am using W7 64-Bit)

1. Is Comodo Firewall reccomended? (I am using it currently but am unsure, as I have heard about some scandals pertaining to Comodo, but wanted to get your opinions) and what are other, perhaps better alternatives if there are any?

2. Should I run Comodo Firewall or any other firewall with Windows Firewall on?

3. Why does Windows Firewall have a "Domain Profile" with the firewall turned on, but a "Private Profile" with it turned off?

4. What is the advantage of using the option to join Comodo's custom DNS server when installing the firewall?

Any other insight or help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks so much for your help!

A:Question about Comodo Firewall and Windows Firewall

Hallo poobla;

Your question in regard to alternatives have a look at this;

question 2; you should not run a third party firewall & windows firewall at the same time

question 3; I don't know about question 3

question 4; I tried Comodo DNS & could not get Windows Update to connect to the server

Sometimes my Comodo Firewall seems to be the "last thing" to come alive in the tray notification area.
Should I have Windows 7 Firewall on by default?  But, that would mean two active firewalls, correct?

A:Can I have Windows 7 Firewall w/Comodo Firewall?

You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

KIS alone for sure. Its maybe the best firewall out there in any security suit u can find. turn on application control and set it to untrusted and u are safe to go.

The best protection is based upon the user's habits, so both could give some users the same protection level.
You could not apply this to all users since some are reckless and neither one would be able to provide protection.

Comodo Firewall has HIPS which is more likely to flag more false positives which most inexperienced users would not know how to deal with. Of coarse if the user utilizes UAC, then HIPS would not be needed.

ZoneAlarm is more user friendly, uses Behavior protection instead of HIPS which will not flag as many false positives.
ZoneAlarm is more compatible with programs.

For myself Windows Firewall provides excellent protection along with UAC with no issues at all.

Just a note: Never trust review sites or testing sites, they will install a product use it for about an hour or less then write a review.
You need to test a product for at least 30 days in order to see how it works and if any potential problems occur.

Enjoy!!

Hi,
I am having some trouble with my Comodo Firewall. I installed v2.4, and although my internet connection was slowed down a little bit, I kept it. But later, i found it really hard to browse the net with a wireless connection, and even with a LAN connection, the CPU usage and the PF usage was way too high. I usually play games online (eg: counter-strike), and when I am playing, the PF size is usually around 600 MB, but with this firewall running, its 850 MB (noticed the change as soon as i removed the firewall). Computer started lagging, games were laggy, had no choice but to remove it and start the windows firewall.
Can u pls tell me wats wrong? If this is a common problem, is there another firewall that u could recommend?
PS: tried sunbelt firewall, but in all the time that I used it, dint see a single thing blocked or denied in the log. Dint really feel that safe.

"Inbound Policy Violation (Access Denied, IP = ***.***.*.*, Port = upnp-mcast(1900))' The IP listed is my "default gateway" IP. I fear that when the firewall was "learning" I may have unknowingly denied a connection that I should have allowed. Any thoughts? Thank you.

New Comodo Bug. We found a second new bug in Comodo which may cause conflict with MBAE and result in browsers not being able to open correctly. It seems when MBAE injects after Comodo there is no problem, but if Comodo injects after MBAE then Comodo doesn't handle the chained hooks correctly. A fresh re-install of MBAE might temporarily solve the problem (as it sometimes makes MBAE handle the API hooks after Comodo) but the definite bug fix must come from Comodo.

You would use CFW along with SpS Free? In my opinion, this might not be a good idea.

As far as I know, HIPS softwares will use hooks to monitor the activities of applications.

I know little about hooks, but I hear that hooks of different security products could conflict with each other with a non-zero probability.

I am afraid that such kind of conflicts would not only influence the stability, but also influence the protection. (I have no evidence, just some thoughs...)

A:Comodo alongside windows firewall

NO !

you should NEVER use 2 firewalls !
they can create conflicts, resulting in LESS security.

turn off Windows Firewall, you don?t need it.

actually, i once had both Comodo?s firewall and Windows firewall running,
i was testing different firewalls and when i activated Comodo?s firewall i forgot to turn off Windows firewall.
it took a week before i discovered it, and i didn?t have any problems during that time.

but don?t do it !

then set both to safe-mode.

I've been doing some research lately about Firewalls and have seen numerous articles suggesting that Windows Firewall is better to use then most third-party firewalls and that Comodo, Zonealarm etc would be useless if you have a router based firewall along with Window's built in one. I've came to the conclusion that i want to switch back to the built in Windows Firewall but i want to keep Comodo HIPS. Will disabling the firewall feature in Comodo be enough to not cause any conflicts? Can someone screenshot which settings i need to disable? A:Can i run Windows Firewall w/ Comodo HIPS?

You cannot use the Windows Firewall with Comodo Firewall, as Comodo Firewall will disable Windows Firewall when it is running.I would not use Comodo HIPS, or HIPS firewalls in general. It is too much bother and would not give extra security if you do not know which program to let through and which to block - potentially letting malware through or messing up legistimate programs.Just stick with Windows Firewall - especially if you are behind a router.

I installed Comodo firewall since it was the only 3rd party firewall available when I first got my new PC. I got tired of it not remembering rules, and decided to uninstall it. Upon rebooting, my internet connection did not work. Vista said no connection was detected. I checked in the device manager for my network adapter. Comodo had created three entries in the network adapters section. I didn't tell it to.

NVIDIA nforce Networking Controller(default)
NVIDIA nforce Networking - Comodo Firewall Miniport
WAN Miniport (IP) - Comodo Firewall Miniport
WAN Miniport (IPV6) - Comodo Firewall Miniport

The default device says it is still working. The other three entries won't let me remove them. I deleted every file and registry entry that had to do with Comodo with no luck. I reinstalled the nforce drivers from Nvidia, and they didn't change. I reinstalled Comodo, and then uninstalled again with no luck. I tried to let Vista diagnose the problem, and it said that the drivers/hardware were having problems but offered no solution. My ethernet is integrated , and can't be removed. How do I get rid of this crap and get my connection back?

A:[SOLVED] Networking screwed after uninstalling Comodo firewall

Exactly the same thing has happened to me!!!!

I have Vista Business but never understodd where the problem was. I manually uninstalled it just like you (removed everything in the registry that had to do with the word "comodo") - since Comodo couldn't uninstall itself for some reason - and now none of my internet connections work; pcmcia-broadband modem, LAN/Ethernet or my WLAN!
This is very frustrating and I were contemplating reinstalling Vista before I read that I wasn't the only one who had experienced this.

Have you solved this? I am very anxious to get my internet working as I'll be moving soon and really need the internet to work for me.

I've been using Comodo Personal Firewall and been very happy with it. However. I had some major system crashes a couple of weeks ago, and ended up having to take my laptop to an engineer - I've learned from experience that said engineer will blame *everything* on a software firewall if you've got one installed, so I uninstalled Comodo in Safe Mode via Add/Remove Programs (it was the only way I could get him to agree to fix it).

I've now got my laptop back and want to reinstall Comodo, but every time I try it tells me there's already a copy on the computer. It asks me if I want to uninstall it, and I click Yes, but nothing happens.

I've been Googling, and it seems like a lot of people have had this problem. There's a lot of discussion of editing the registry to get rid of it manually, and I know how to do this in theory - I've found a Comodo Personal Firewall folder under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > Software, but I've also read that it's not okay just to delete the whole thing because it references other programs on the system. I have no idea which registry keys to delete, and can't find a full guide anywhere.

Can anyone help?

I am attempting to download free Comodo Firewall updates which I do monthly. Never had a problem in the past. This time received following notice:

Error 108: Update could not be completed. Please check internet connection settings.
Internet connection settings are used to deliver updates to Comodo.

What settings and where?

The firewall is active and running smoothly!

Thanks for any help forthcoming

I wasn`t sure where this should be posted, but since it involves an unknown network, I figured I would start out by posting it here. Yesterday my internet went out in the middle of doing my average daily surfing(all sites I know are in good standing) when my internet suddenly went out. Later on that day, I went through the process of trying to get back online(turned off/unpluged power to modem, reset modem). When I turned my computer back on to see if I could get online, Comodo Firewall threw up a window telling me that it had detected that my computer has joined a new network and needs to know how to treat the new network according to my location. The IP address Comodo gave for the new network joined was 169.254.131.41/17 Neither the wife or I know anything about setting up, or joining a new network, so it wasn`t anything done by us, and we are the only ones accessing our computers. As a side note, I ended up having to call AT&T to get back online, evidently there was an error in my line. I have run all my antivirus/malware programs, and they all show up clean. I would appreciate any thoughts on why our computers would be according to Comodo Firewall have joined a new network without us knowing. Running Windows XP Thanks for taking time.

A:Solved: Comodo Firewall tells me it has detected a new network

When your computer did not get a response from a Dhcp server (your ISP's assuming you are using just a modem) it assigned an APIPA (169.254.x.y) and that, of course, is a different network.

Hello,

I'm looking to "microsoft-proof" my windows installation, for the most part. Right now I'm just using defender + windows firewall + peerblock. I've been without an actual antivirus for a long time now, so I'm a bit out of the loop, so I guess I'm curious if NOD32 as a super-light base with either Tinywall or Comodo firewall on top (I plan to block everything then whitelist as needed) is still considered a good combination? Back when I was still very active with security software NOD32 + Comodo firewall was considered the holy grail of all combinations. I was also looking in to KAV/KIS 2016 but from what I've read, they're having trouble with getting everything working properly in Windows 10.

I'll make a poll at the top for people who don't have time / initiative to leave a response but still have an opinion.

A:NOD32 + Tinywall / Comodo Firewall + Windows 10

If you are already going for NOD32 why not go for their smart security option where they include a firewall together with their antivirus which will make it smoother rather than trying to combine 2 different products and trying to make them work together

If you really want to use another firewall I would think that comodo has a more comprehensive protection than tinywall since it has a significantly larger consumption in memory and such. Also Comodo has a few features that you might find helpful such as sandboxing and such that tinywall lacks.

However if you want to make your setup as light as possible tinywall is obviously the way to go since it barely has a GUI and it has no other bulkware, it's just a straight up firewall program, a decent one!

I noticed that, unlike other Internet security software, CIS does not "take over" Windows 7/8 Firewall upon installation. Is this correct?

If the above is correct, then the Inbound and Outbound rules of Windows Firewall would still be observed?

You mean your Windows FW is still active??
I´m using Comodo Firewall and it deactivates Windows FW upon installing on Windows 7.

Hi! After i instaled Comodo Firewall Pro on my PC, somethimes i get bluescreen error that cmdguard.sys STOP 0x0000050. cmdguard.sys is Comodo's driver.. How can i fix this problem without unistalling Comodo Firewall Pro??

A:Windows BLUESCREEN Error and Comodo Firewall

Well first off you can check out their site, and try to find out if they have any updates or patches for their firewall. Also, do you have any other firewalls installed, are you running XP or VISTA, as both of these OS have a firewall built in that you will have to disable before running a third party firewall, well you dont have to disable them, but they cause problems if you do not.

Hi,

I have been unable to get my Windows Updates lately, and I know there are several issues causing the problem. I want to deal with them one at a time because the problem is complex.

The first problem is that I've installed Comodo Firewall on my laptop, and though this seems like it may be an issue more suitable for a Comodo Firewall forum, my question is really about trying to find out what protocol (?) Windows Updates uses.

I have a question about the Comodo Firewall configuration relating to an Application Rule named Windows Updater Applications. The setting reads: Allow and Log TCP or UDP In/Out from IP Any to IP Any where Source Port is Any and Destination Port is Any. When I click on that information, a window opens and there is a choice of Protocol. The selected protocol is TCP or UDP. Is this the correct selection? The other options are TCP or UDP or ICMP or IP.

I can't recall whether I created this rule myself. It's possible, but someone else may have done it. I don't even know if this is a necessary firewall rule. Can you tell me? I am trying to learn about firewall function, but it's slow going.

Any help anyone can give me is very much appreciated.

A:Comodo Firewall & Windows Updater Applications

Firewall should work correctly on default settings, just try reset firewall to default settings,if it don't help uninstall firewall completely and reinstall it again

I just need a suggestion of which is better to use........................

should I be using the Windows XP Pro SP2 Built in Firewall or my Norton AntiVirus Firewall program???

A:Solved: Windows Built in Firewall or Norton Firewall

"Norton AntiVirus Firewall program?"

Do you mean Norton Internet Security?

Whether you use Norton or another 3rd party firewall depends on your analysis of your risks vs. the increased complexity.

Am runnin WinXP Home edition on AMD Athlon XP2600+ 1.91 GHz 1.00 GB Ram

I am running Sygate Firewall & til now it was runnin alongside windows firewall, however it recently stopped running on startup & I had to manually start it, so just uninstalled & reinstalled. This time the windows security center was whingein that it wasnt protected by windows firewall so have told it I will manage my own firewall....my main query is
1, why did it ask this time & not before? ie: ran alongside sygate happily
2, what caused it to stop runnin on startup?
& just as an added extra...why is Avast still runnin yet no icon showing & to my knowledge has not updated automatically??
Should I be lookjin for nasties or is this all just a configuration problem?
