Disk setup launches and closes on startup

Q: Disk setup launches and closes on startup

I am helping a friend clean viruses off her tablet. After about 4 hours of Skype screen-sharing, going through regedit and other obscure locations as well as scanning and cleaning her system with multiple antivirus software (avast and malwarebytes), it seems we've fixed just about everything. One thing remains, when she starts up her system, she spots disk setup (probably disk management) open up and then close quickly. I have searched for something like this online but I have no luck.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Gotta be a corrupt registry or something, but I've got a computer that launches MS Money setup when ever I open just about any other program or My documents, Control Panel, or My computer etc.

Could this be a bad file association, so that the Windows Installer or Money Installer has been associated with opening a window or something?

Any ideas without a Wipe and reload?

A:MS Money setup launches with everything

No one has any idea on why one specific program would launch when ever any windows are opened? Actually it appears to launch three times whenever I open any Windows system folders, Control Panel, My documents, My pictures, Internet Explorer, (but not aftermarket software (like photodeluxe or quicken, etc)

I recently had to replace a friends hard drive so I had to reinstall all the software. Things went smoothly until I tried to setup up Outlook Express. When I clicked on the OE icon or even launching MSIMN.EXE directly all I can get is a setup screen for MSN Internet Access. I've never seen this before. There must be a simple check box somewhere to allow me to use the local ISP.....right?

It's a Dell Dimension 4300 running Windows ME.

It sounds as though you've not quite finished the dial up networking setup, as though you've not given the MS Outlook and I.E a connection.

Good evening. Download OTL by OldTimer from here and save it to your Desktop. Double click the tool to run it. Click the Quick Scan button and allow it to do it's thing. Once complete, it should open two Notepad Windows - OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt It should also save copies in the same location as OTL. I want you to copy and paste the contents of OTL.txt that should appear into one reply and Extras.Txt into another. The length of the two logs sometimes results in the end being chopped off if you post both in one reply.

A few days ago firefox starts at startup. Theres nothing listed in startup for it. Im fairly sure its not a virus or malware. Is there a tool that can monitor what causes it to pull up? The only recent changes have been setting up a vpn.

I reinstalled firefox and didnt atart on its own for about 10 boots but now it is. I have vpncheck pro that autostarts rograms and disables them when vpn is active but this occurred before that program was installed. it closes firefox after startup cause it sees no vpn. the vpn connects and reopens it like it should. So i dont think it that software..

nvm. yesterday i was doing system image restores. today just got done creating one. I think it involves windows 8 fastboot thing with shutdown vs restarting. maybe i had it open and thats why cause it doesnt happen with restart.

I am a new user to windows 8.1 and am getting more familiar with it each day. I have an issue that I have not been able to resolve however and would appreciate any advice on how to stop this happening. My browser launches immediately after I sign into my windows account on initial boot only, does not happen when it awakes from a sleep condition. It happens regardless of the browser, it happens with whatever the default browser is. The browser opens the local (Australian) MSN page, has a bing search bar, lists all MS services, one drive, outlook.com etc. plus the local news. Bing is not my selected search engine. I was being automatically signed into outlook.com and others but was able to turn off the MS sign in assistant in services. This page is not my set home page.
I have followed the various tutorials on this site and have checked the services, the startup entries, the task scheduler and the registry entries ( great tutorials! Thanks) but it persists. I am at the point of accepting this as part of the "windows experience" but thought it worth a question here to see if anyone has a way to turn it off. Appreciate any help.
Alexm.

Hello

If you go to the following directory on your machine:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

Are there any files in there? it sounds like you may have a HTML file or internet short cut in there.
Anything in this folder will start up automatically when you log in, delete anything you don't want to start up.

Hi people, found your forum via Google. I have an issue with Windows 7 Professional.

It is a new install (2 days old) and every time it is booted it launches into start up repair. Is there anyway I can completely disable it so this doesnt happen?

After it goes through it boots correctly but still comes up after a clean shut down. Also, if we reset the PC during startup repair then manually tell it to boot normally, it does so successfully.

When I launch Firefox, my last session loads up fine, no matter how many tabs I had open the last time I closed it. But then, it starts loading multiple blank windows. It started with 10-20, then 30+, but the last few days it has launched 62 additional windows, all blank.

I didn't have this problem until upgrading to Firefox 4.

I have not added any additional add-ons since upgrading.

I am running Vista on an Acer laptop.

I looked for an existing thread for this problem, but none of the ones I found addressed the same exact problem I am having.

Silicon Valley startup ZeroVulnerabilityLabs has made available a free program it claims stops malware from exploiting a wide range of software vulnerabilities regardless of whether these flaws are publically known or not.

Available now in a beta version for consumers and non-profits (the business version requires a license), ExploitShield Browser Edition is designed to be "install and forget," the company said.

Once installed, the software named 17 applications as being protected, including the most common and troublesome ones such as Adobe Reader and Flash, Java, Microsoft Office, various browsers and a number of video players. Others may be added in future.

Security innovations pop up from time to time and this one represents a lateral approach to what has become a major - possibly the major issue - for consumers and businesses alike; how to secure PCs when software flaws crop up on an almost daily basis.

The overwhelming majority of Windows malware attacks now hook into common flaws as a way of infecting their targets with many automated using commercial exploit kits serving attacks from compromised websites. Patching is one answer but this can be exhausting. The number of flaws has become a major overhead even for single consumers.

At the same time it has become apparent that conventional antivirus software isn't stopping all or even most of this kind of malware which raises an obvious que... Read more

I run into a strange problem. Firstly:
Radeon HD 5830
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Today I decided to update my AMD Catalyst and drivers from 14.12 to 15.7.1.

I did the usual thing, uninstalling all AMD stuff via the catalyst install manager at the Control Panel, then restarted my computer. I ran the new 15.7.1 catalyst installer exe. It launched into the language selection screen as normal. However, after I click "Next" I briefly see the "Express" or "Custom" install option window before the setup closes abruptly. There is no error message or anything else to indicate what happened. I've tried running it several times to the same effect.

I still had the old 14.12 catalyst setup, so I tried running that. However, it does the exact same thing of closing itself after the language selection screen. I even tried running AMD's autodetectutility.exe but that program immediately closes after launching with a brief window message about how my resolution is lower than the recommended for installing AMD graphics, despite my current resolution being 1920x1080.
I tried restarting my computer again, but I still have the same problem.

There doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with my computer. I can run browsers and other programs just fine so far. So it seems this problem is only with AMD .exes for some reason.

I am at a loss for what to do now. I have had this AMD card for some years now and have updated AMD catalyst many times before without ... Read more

I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is … how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I don’t want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.

I am able to choose my operating system when I press F8

If I launch the corrupt system in “safe mode” or “domain controllers”, everything appears to progress normally until the very end… when the XP black desktop appears (and just before the icons appear). At that point I get the error message
“Windows XP cannot run under safe mode” and I am asked to click OK to consult a log file. The screen however is actually frozen at that point, so I have to unplug the machine.

Otherwise if I launch in debugging mode or “Last known good configuration”m I get a message saying “Setup will restart now” and then “ Setup is being restarted…” while the usual XP installation logos start to appear e.g. “An exciting new look etc…”. Shortly afterwards I get
“An error that has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing ”,
Again the screen freezes so I need to unplug the machine.

When I open Internet Explorer on my windows XP sp2 laptop it starts up, shows a dialog asking me if I would like to restore the last open pages or just go to my homepage. I have tried both options but the results are still the same. When I click either of the options the homepage starts loading but then the internet window dissapears. The iexplore process is still running though.

I have so far uninstalled/reinstalled IE 8 on the computer, tried to run it with add-ons disabled, cleaned my computer with MBAM and done a virus scan with my antivirus and restarted the computer several times. So far nothing has helped.

The only other info I can give at this time is that when I have gotten through to the internet explorer main window (that is, choose wether I want to restore or go to my homepage) a new iexplore.exe process starts up, my main window dissapears and the small iexplore.exe process closes again, leaving only the original iexplore.exe process running.

Please keep in mind that if I cannot access something via using the 'run' command in the Task Manager that I will not be able to do it, running downloaded files/installing things is okay though, just nothing in explorer!About three days ago I turned on my computer to update my iPod to find it really, really slow - it was fine a couple of hours before hand, but now all of a sudden it was bad, I did the usual registry/virus/spyware sweep and deleted a couple of low to medium risk items, restarted my computer only to find that explorer would not load, though I had gained back some speed, it was still a little slower than usual, I accessed Task Manager to manually run 'explorer.exe' and thought everything was going fine until about 20 seconds later when it closed itself, it did this again, and again, until I decided to come here. Another virus/spyware scan with CA showed nothing and using the 'STINGER' program found just as little... nothing! Here is my current, as in, 30 seconds ago HijackThis log... help needed wow aka world of warcraft question. my sons game closes at load with storage error we use vista computer with kaspersky security. Game started acting up last night. Could it be upgrade to kasperysky 2011 or vista update? both were updated the night before. If you need the error posted below . You'll need to tell me how to copy and paste it in a message. I know how to do screen shots but I'd rather just copy and paste error without having to deal with screen shot.

Hi, I left my Pc on standby last night, there were no signs that the computer was broken in any way. I started it up by hitting one of the keyboard keys and it came up with a blue screen of death which I didn't take note of. After I restarted my pc and now it looks like it can't find the OS. I have tried to system restore but it won't let me. And I have also tried choosing a system image backup but it still won't let me. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

A:Disk boot failure on startup, insert system disk and press enter

Hello Kyle!

What kind of boot drive do you have? What model is it? Is there another storage device in your PC?

Start your PC up and check if you see the boot drive in BIOS. If not, power down the PC, open it up change the cables and port, start up again.

Good luck!

I have an Alienware M11x with Windows 7. This brand of Alienware laptops "does not" have a disk drive, so a windows 7 boot disk is useless even if I had one, which I don't. I tried to start up this laptop today and Windows will not load. it goes to startup repair, and startup repair will not fix the issue. So I don't know how to fix this issue and get windows 7 to load. Every tutorial I
find online say "use the boot disk." I don't have a boot disk, as I said this laptop doesn't even have a disk drive built in.

I am running Windows XP Home v2002 SP2

My IE will not open, it just flashes and closes. I have tried running with no add-ons, repairing, reinstalling, and installing newer version, all with the same results.
My WMP is not able to be updated, attempts to update and freezes. Also unable to install newer version successfully.
As of a while ago, my Notepad application seemed to just disappear.
When Windows updates it always seems to hang up before completing, and is also running increasingly more sluggish. Some Windows applications, like System Info among others, will not open.

I have run all sorts of virus/spyware scans and have found traces of Virtumonde and Smitfraud on my system. I have also had the Windows Security Antivirus - 2009 prompt pop on me a while back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have tried to research what I can for so long I have forgotten where I am at in all this.

My IE 6 setup screen is appearing whenever I reboot, in normal mode and safe mode. IE 6 is installed already. If I cancel out of the setup or go ahead with it, then the Windows never finishes loading and just sits there. The only way I can get around this is to boot to the command prompt and then rename the "Internet Explorer" folder, then type "win" to exit to Windows.

If I reboot, then it happens all over again. I'm wondering if I'm hijacked. Below is my log.

Anybody see anything out of the ordinary?

I currently have Windows 7 32bit but i have 8GB Ram and would like to use all of it so i am upgrading to 64bit.

When i put in the 64bit CD I get an error message saying "This Installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced).

I then restart the computer with the CD in but it does not boot with the CD. I went into the Bio's and made sure it said boot CD as number 1 and it does.

My computer is capable of using a 64bit OS.

I really am not sure what else to do at this point.

EDIT: This problem is fixed! See last page!

Hello ,

is the keyboard a usb device ?

if it is then try a wired PS/2 wired board

usb drivers are store on the harddrive and do not get activated untill the harddrive does

now if it is a mobo with usb drivers built into it & you have no PS/2 plugs you may need to go into the bios and set the bios to factory setting

or you can just open the case and change the bios jumpers for about 3 min. then change them back or just remove the litheum battery for about 5 min.

make sure you unplug the power cord first

If I use them to boot my computer from the Floppy drive and setup XP, will my files and folders (i.e pictures, etc) be deleted?

If so, what method can I use to repair the corrupt .dll file without erasing my pictures?

Thanks in advance for any help...

In anticipation of a fresh install of W7 when the retailbox ships, I'm playing with various configurations for storage and looking at various scenarios.

I'm thinking of ditching my RAID 0 array and looking at setting the disk controller up as AHCI now that 7 supports this out of the box.

I'm thinking of the following:

Drive 1 Sytem and programs

Drive 2 pagefile (what sort of capacity woudl suit this?)

Drive 3 User files perhaps partitioned for x2 user (or would a drive for each user be better)

Drive 4 dumping ground for pictures, downloads etc.

What are your thoughts, and if you had say two to four drives kicking around how would you organise your PC?

I have read through your 2 posts umpteen times and I cannot figure out whether you are spoofing or just lost.

Let's start here - you had 1 hard drive with an operating system loaded and the computer ran OK.

You added another hard drive and now you only get as far as a screen logo 'COMPAQ'.

When you now insert your XP cd in the cd drive it says 'it cant read it or the disk is not valid'.

Is this anywhere near what you mean?
