Malware house offered bounty for infected Macs.

Q: Malware house offered bounty for infected Macs.

A researcher has unearthed fresh evidence of cyber criminals' growing attraction to Apple's OS X platform with the discovery of a now-disbanded group that offered 43 cents for every infected Mac.
Mac-codec.com was just one of hundreds of "codec-partnerka," a term researcher Dmitry Samosseiko uses to describe the well-organized affiliate networks that pay a small bounty each time their malware is installed on an unsuspecting end user's computer. What makes this one stand apart is its dedication to the Mac platform.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello..I am desperately looking for a solution who is making my life a living hell!!
I moved into the new house with two laptops with Windows Vista installed. Since then I have been experiencing severe problems with the wireless connection. The operator is TalkTalk.

As soon as we realised that the problem seemed to exist exclusively on our Vistas (since the two Macs, of another couple of tenants who had been living here for long, were working correctly as usual) we called the company. They suggested many things I have already read on this forum such as deleting the other networks, re-adding mine manually etc. We then realised that things were more complicated than initially thought and started analysing the problem more in depth. We went through their website and changed different settings, including those listed in the properties of "Manage wireless connection" or sth like that (we changed some IP configurations, the protocol ivp4/6, etc.). The outcome was that my Vistas started working while the Macs stopped.

I called them again many other times but no conclusive solution was ever found. I eventually talked to another operator who drew the conclusion according to which the WEP configuration of our Vistas is not compatible with that of the MAC. In other words either the Vistas would work or the Macs. No way they could both work at the same time!!!!

Please I noticed that people from this website are much more competent than those working for these companies and ... Read more

Each side sincerely believes their platform is better and destined to rule the world.

New wave of phishing attacks serves malware to PCs and Macs

By Ed Bott
March 23, 2012, 5:24am PDT

Summary: Malware distributors have launched a new wave of attacks aimed at taking over unpatched PCs and Macs. They look like routine messages from a bank or a social network, but instead of phishing for passwords, they?re serving up malware.

In the past few weeks, I?ve noticed an alarming increase in fraudulent email messages coming to some old, well-established email addresses of mine.

It?s not just the quantity of messages that?s noteworthy, it?s the quality as well. This particular wave of attacks includes some attacks that are frighteningly real looking. And they?re being used to serve up a toxic brew of malware to unprotected systems.

Consider these two examples of messages I received this week. The first appears to be a fraud alert from American Express:

It has all the right logos, and the wording has the same professional tone and grammatical accuracy I would expect of a legitimate communication from American Express. Unlike many phishing messages, this one made me look much more closely, and I suspect that the click-through rate was higher than most such attempts.

Hey guys, I need help modifying my network/internet setup at my house and guesthouse. This is how my current setup looks like. Main house has the DSL(dynamic IP) modem, connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless G router(DHCP) 1 laptop connects via wireless to that, and a cat 5 wire going from one of the ports to the guesthouse bedroom in wall plug, and connected to it is a Dlink Dir-625 wireless n router. I have 2 computers connected to the router wirelessly. With this setup my Internet connection is inconsistent in the guesthouse. And recently I bought a Denon AVR-3808 Audio receiver in the living room that needs to be connected to the internet via Ethernet wire., and I don?t have access to that. Let me give you more info on the Distance between the farthest point of the guesthouse, and the position of the modem and wireless router is in the main house. It?s about 60-75ft, 5 walls in between, and 2 of the walls would be the outside stucco walls?? I need suggestions on how to do this the right way. My Denon audio receiver is the only equipment that need to connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable, and I don?t have access to that??

Thank you in advance

A:Network/internet setup between my house and the guest house

First off, get stability from Main to Guest by using wired access. If this is not stable,
then the wireless will not be either. Update the Netgear WGR614 firmware.

Wireless will bog down when it is encrypted, but you need that to avoid your neighbors
from getting access to your systems.

Which location (Main/Guest) has the worse reliability issue?

I know this is going to sound awful but get your OWN internet connection. The distance is too great for a wireless network and probably wouldn't work terribly well by hardwiring it (and that's assuming you can get past the physical problems of installing the cable externally). You may be able to use a powerline network connection (not sure if these will work on an extended intranet) but the setup costs are still pretty high for now.

Really - fork out the few dollars that a internet connection of your own will cost. Much better proposition all round.

If so, how is the payment processed ? by paypal, check ?
If my windows bug is eligible for a reward, then Microsoft would be supporting a greater cause, which is my antivirus:

I erased all the files of the Grissom House I could find in My Documents/EA Game/The Sims ... But the house still shows up in the Lots and Houses Bin. In fact, there's two copies in it right now.

I'm fixing this system for someone and they had the typical antivirus 2012 popup rampage BS. I got process explorer to run, found where its process launched from (application data/local) and there were three 3-character executables sitting there, all created on the same date, one of which was repeatedly starting up. So I terminated and deleted those three and the system was acting mostly normal. There were no unable-to-account-for items in any of the various ways to view startup lists but now windows update is broken :(

It's Win7 so I ran the built in Windows Update utility and 1 installed and 14 didn't but they were already downloaded. So I deleted the update cache with a batch file containing:
CD %Windir%
CD SoftwareDistribution
DEL /F /S /Q Download

and that worked so I re-checked for updates and it was the same ones so I hit download and they did redownload successfully then all failed to install pretty quickly. So I picked one of the Win7 security updates from the list and downloaded the WIn7 64 bit version of that KB# from download.microsoft.com and tried to install it manually via a standalone installer download of it. It went through the steps nicely then just said it failed.
I unhid the administrator account and logged in as that (for the first time on this system by the way) and got the same result trying to run it. So apparently something isn't quite right.

So I ran the SFC utility and it came up with a result that some... Read more

Hi All, I have a Lenovo B590 laptop. I had some issues with my wifi card (long story, and I guess it's not relevant) and decided to update my BIOS. The original version was H1ET75WW (1.18). I made a bootable USB with Rufus and the updating process was started. During the update I got a message like ?System will be restarted?. However, it didn't turn on anymore, the update seems failed. Now when I push the power button, the power led lights up, the fan starts and after a few seconds it restarts again and again endlessly. The first ?boot? is a bit longer 6-8 seconds, the next ones shorter, 3-4 seconds, but the screen is always blank. It's a bit promising that when I plug in an USB and while holding the Fn+R buttons and turning the laptop on, then the first ?boot? is a bit longer, and it tries to read the USB drive - at least it's led light starts blinking. So I hope that there is a solution to repair the BIOS by using the appropriate files ont the USB stick. What I tried so far:Taking out the battery and plugging out tha AC power, and holding the power button for a minute.Taking out the CMOS battery for half an hour and pushed the power button without battery/AC power.WinCrisis (even though I couldn't find a BIOS.wph file, but tried to rename EXE and CAP files).Creating a bootable USB again, with the DOS files on it from the official Lenovo site.Trying to rename/edit autoexec.bat and other files endlessly... Starting this fall, Apple will pay up to $200,000 for iOS and iCloud bugs

As part of a security presentation given at this year's Black Hat conference, Apple today announced that it would be starting up a bug bounty program in the fall. The program will reward security researchers who uncover vulnerabilities in Apple's products and bring them to the company's attention. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and many other companies have offered bug bounty programs for some time now, but this is Apple's first.

For now, Apple is intentionally keeping the scope of the program small. It will initially be accepting bug reports from a small group of a few dozen security researchers it has worked with in the past. For now, bounties are only being offered for a small range of iDevice and iCloud bugs. The full list is as follows:
Secure boot firmware components: Up to $200,000 (~150,000)
Extraction of confidential material protected by the Secure Enclave: Up to $100,000.
Execution of arbitrary code with kernel privileges: Up to $50,000.
Access from a sandboxed process to user data outside of that sandbox: Up to $25,000.
Unauthorized access to iCloud account data on Apple servers: Up to $50,000.
As the program continues and Apple works the, um, bugs out of its processes, the company will expand the list of eligible security researchers as well as the list of hardware and software bugs for which bounties are offered.

Researchers who want to claim the bounties will need... Read more

Source: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Vulnerability Disclosure

In early November, a well-known and respected security researcher by the name of Tavis Ormandy alerted us to several security vulnerabilities in the consumer version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Within days, we were able to fix several of the vulnerabilities server-side and are now internally testing a new version (2.2.1) to release in the next 3-4 weeks to patch the additional client-side vulnerabilities. At this time, we are still triaging based on severity.

The research seems to indicate that an attacker could use some of the processes described to insert their own code onto a targeted machine. Based on the findings, we believe that this could only be done by targeting one machine at a time.

However, this is of sufficient enough a concern that we are seeking to implement a fix. Consumers using the Premium version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should enable self-protection under settings to mitigate all of the reported vulnerabilities.

Unfortunately, vulnerabilities are the harsh reality of software development. In fact, this year alone, our researchers have found and reported several vulnerabilities with other software. A vulnerability disclosure program is one way to accelerate the discovery of these vulnerabilities and empower companies like Malwarebytes to fix them.

I?d like to take this opportunity to launch the Malwarebytes Bug Bounty program which I hope will encourage other security researchers to re... Read more

Hi all,

Having this problem for several months, suspected HDD first but bought new M500 and seems there's something else is responsible for this "fun" I'm having with the PC.

Basically, the nature seems to be the same all the time - when I playing video games (currently it is Kings Bounty, used to be the problem with Max Payne 2012 even during the installation), also used to play Flash games and used to watch video online, it was crushing.
Most common BSOD problem was "page fault in non-paged area" and "IRQL is not less or equal". Sometimes it gives me just a black screen and nothing else at all so I have to go "hard reboot". Sometimes, it hangs with the destroyed, "torn in pieces" video and annoying repetitive sound like ding-ding-ding, so I need to reboot it again, sometimes it goes into BSOD with some errors and exceptions.

I have tried numerous times different Windows 7 versions, both x86 and x64 architecture, and tried XP. Same issues.

I have noticed although, that when the W7 has a clean installation and almost no updates installed, it gives me less headache. Recently I have stopped installing the Catalyst suite for the graphics and thought the problem was just with that but after going through all Windows updates it started again.

I think that there is something with the video, but cannot get to the bottom of it.

Please help as this is becoming now a paranoia for me and I cannot sleep properly.... Read more

i need to figure out how to best clean a possible malware from my 2 mac laptops, an ibook and a powerbook. isn't the best thing to do a clean install on both just to be safest?

A:help for macs?

i had originally posted an issue in the security forum, and i was referred to ask in this forum. hope this is right, it's my first time posting on a computer forum. i don't know the protocol for mac laptops as far as the problem i'm having. when i search google for "my full name" i get weird spammy results, some offensive and some not. obviously, people are going to say that someone else with my name....etc. but this is not the case. i am the only person with my name for one, the other is that the results that the search index shows are some sites with what appears to be fake website domains, all showing jumbled language etc. with my full name amidst random text. if i click on the actual link, i'm directed to a domain purchasing site, or some foreign blog that i know nothing about and is in a different language. HELP? is this malware installed on my own computer creating this or is someone else creating it from another location? i just want to do a clean install to be sure i remove everything. i've already backed up my files, so its not a problem to clean install. any other recommendations?

Another dim question:

Bro is asking for RAM for his Apple Mac desktop. Apparently it takes PC100 SDRAM.

I have a handful of PC100 and PC133 RAM for pc, is this compatible with Apple Macs, or do I have to go down the (seemingly) expensive route of buying Apple RAM? (Not being a cheapskate sister, am simply genuinely broke!)

A:RAM compatibility - Macs

Hi josbd,

I'm pretty convinced that there's no such thing as Mac RAM or PC RAM. However, I do not suggest that you simply assume that any PC RAM will just plug and play into a Mac.

If you check out the link below (which I researched for you), you'll see that it mentions a PC100 SDRAM that is 'MAC and PC Compatible.'

The best bet for you and your bro I guess is to try out the current RAM you have first. If it works, great. If not, I strongly suggest you go out and get a proper RAM stick for that Mac. Find a Mac-friendly vendor, or you could even order it online off a website.

The other thing is to take note of your Mac. Is it an old machine or a newer one like the Mac Mini? Chances are, a newer machine will be able to take PC RAM more easily? Just a gut feel.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions.

1 Log into safe mode;

2 Move HijackThis.exe into a permanent folder (e.g. C:\HijackThis) otherwise your desktop will be filled with a bundle of files created by HijackThis after fixing bad entries;

3 Disable the system restore;

4 With your Add/Remove Programs utility, uninstall Visual IP Insight or IP Insight (unnecessary) and Web Rebates;

5 Close all open applications;

Hi. I have 3 macs, 2 pc's which i want to put wireless DSL on. My PC downstairs (not included in the two) has DSL on it. My other five computers are upstairs. My macs are an imac G3, Power Macintosh 5400/180, Beige G3. One Gateway PC and Custom built PC by me. I would like to know how to get internet to all 5 of my computers upstairs wirelessly. Thanks, Tony

A:Wireless Networking w/ macs and PC's

Might be best to get a wireless access point/router to which you connect your DSL and then let that share the broadband connection to all six computers in the house. If this doesn't immediately make sense to you then have a read of this HowStuffWorks.com home networking tutorial (especially the WiFi bits) first. Make sure you're securing your connection with a decent firewall (e.g. many routers include firewall capabilities).

Ok from what I can tell, the U3 program that comes on my Sandisk Cruzer flash drive is not going to work for what I want.

I think its nice how you can have certain programs open.

But I need access to this drive not only on pcs, but also Macs at school.

And the U3 isnt compatible with macs.

I'd really like the flash drive set up just like a normal HDD where I can easily drag & drop files off & on it & easily access it via My Computer etc.

But I also want it encrypted on both pcs & macs.

So is there any password encryption that I can put on here instead of U3 that will work on both platforms?

A:U3 isnt for me - how can I encrypt for macs & pcs?

Try TrueCrypt. Crossplatform and free.

I have a mid-2011 iMac 27" and a 2018 MacBook Pro 13" w/ Touchbar. The iMac has usb ports, thunderbolt 2 ports, an ethernet port, and a firewire port. The MacBook only has thunderbolt 3 ports. I want to be able to extend the MacBook's desktop to the iMac screen. It seems that the most popular and easiest way to do this is to purchase these two adapters:

However, this solution is quite expensive. My question is if I wanted to achieve the same goal, could I use these adapters instead:

Any advice/ input is appreciated.

In both Vista and XP, I could explicitly setp the printer share name on the network and also what printer driver to use (PCL, PostScript). My PC has two printers, an Epson inkjet which doesn't support network printing from the Mac because it only supports PCL, and a Brother HL5240 laser printer.

Under XP/Vista I installed the BR-Script drivers on both the Windows and Mac boxes, shared the printer as //Skip-PC/HL5240, and have no problems printing. Does anyone have a clue how I might do this in Windows 7?

A:How to share printers with Macs?

OK, I figured out that I had to click on the printer and get to the printer properties page. On that page, I could change the share name and also setup the printer security. After that it worked fine.

Hey there.
I have a portable hard drive, that I can modify and add files to just fine on my PC. But on Macs, it's read only. Any ideas why?

A:Can't modify portable HD on Macs

Hi there,

Your hard drive must be formatted with NTFS from Windows. This is not a problem necessarily, it will just take a few minutes to get Mac OSX to be able to write to it (only 10.4.3 and above). There is a program called NTFS-3g. It has been ported to the Mac, and works great. I have tried it myself.

There is the link. Check it out. If you need help installing it, just ask here.

Also, if you do not feel like going through the trouble, you can always reformat the drive with FAT32 instead, which will wipe all the data on it. But Windows and Mac can both read/write to FAT32 with no problems or modifications.

Hope this helps.

I'm an accounting major and plan to start doing some taxes for individuals following my class at H & R Block (don't worry, it's legal, I have an internship). I was wondering if there is any good software out there that does tax work that is compatible with a mac. I actually haven't done too much looking, so I don't really know what there might be out there. Also, good cheap places to buy software?

A:Accounting software for Macs?

Back before Intel powered Macs, my mom was interested in such too.

Have the following info that I had for her at that time, plus some other info:

Tech Support Guy Forums have never let me down before! So here it goes!

I live in a house with 2 room mates. They each own a Macbook Pro. I have 2 PC's running Windows 7. PC #1 is a media center PC in the den. It has 2 shared drives on it. PC #2 is my personal PC upstairs in my room with a shared folder.

I want all of us to be able to see the shared drives on PC #1 and see each other's shared folders on our personal computers.

We cannot seem to get all of the computers to see each other. I am more than willing to tear the whole thing apart and start from scratch if that's what it takes. I've attached an image for those of you who are more visual people.

A:Networking Macs, Windows 7 PC's

First off, can you ping them all from the other computers by computer name? Get that working first.

Next, disable ALL firewalls until you get file sharing working, then you can work on configuring the firewalls.

Does anyone know of a way to hide Macs (IP address and all) that connect to a PC network. If not possible to do while the Macs are connected to the server, would it still be possible to hide the Macs from the network when they are physically connected but not logged into the server/network resources.

Thanks for any interest.

I am interested in using a switch to create VLANs in my network, with membership based on MAC addresses. I have looked at solutions from 3COM, Dell, and D-Link; however, as far as I can see, these companies only offer switches that configure VLANs based on the physical port that devices are plugged into. Could you please refer me to a 48-port switch with the capability to assign VLAN membership by MAC addresses. Not to be picky, but I would like to stay away from Cisco products because of the price premium associated with them.

Thanks for all the help,

A:Make VLANs from MACs, not ports!

We have one HPlaserjet4mv connected to a Appletalk (MAC) network. I recently installed a NTserver and 5 PCs. Since the printer act as a print server in a Mac environment, can the NTserver and PCs print to the same print server.

The printer has a static IP address and both Macs & PCs uses TCP/IP protocol.

Is it possible??

Thank in advance.......

A:Macs & Pcs Sharing one print server?

I don't recall if the 4mv supports lpd printing, but if it does, that's your answer. On the NT machines in the Network applet, click the add button on the services tab, install Microsoft TCP/IP printing. After a reboot, you will be able to add a (local) printer port that corresponds to the printer's IP address. After you make the new port, pick your driver and set the printer name.

About two years ago a computer tech visited our home and told us we were the victims of a "man in the middle attack" (he actually suspected much of my neighborhood was) It now seems that whenever logon to our wifi network another "hidden network" will pop up along with it. The interesting thing is that this "hidden network" only appears when our gateway is plugged in --in other words if i disable the gateway and search wifi networks with my phone or tablet BOTH networks --home and hidden--are no longer available--as though they are dependent on one another--also, both networks share almost down to the letter MACS and bssids...So if my home network has a mac of ce37326, the hidden network's is ce372327...and my event viewer (up until last week) showed me attaching to both...unfortunately the files showing this seemed to have dissappeared. Any ideas on what's going on and how to stop it would be appreciated.
BTW -- I wanted to attach a couple of jpgs but saw nowhere to attach...

A:Hidden Networks With Similar MACS

...I should add that at the same time this hidden network appeared  my ability to connect my Kindle to my pc via USB was no longer functional and after a series of convesrsations with Amazon's tech crew their only suggestion was to do a factory reset.

Not sure if this is in the right section, but...

The new IT guy in our London Office is proposingchanging all the PC's and purchasing all MAC computers and running Windows XP Pro.

We are an architectural firm, so all the software is CAD/Graphic relates that runs off of PC machines.

I know that MACs use intel chips, but am dubious about running windows on a mac that needs additional software to run the PC side of it.

CAD and Graphic software is very finicky on it's native PC platform that it was designed for. i just don't want the company spending tens of thousands because the IT guy likes MAC's better than PC's (Dell to be specific).
