Stuck on Loading Your Personal Settings

Q: Stuck on Loading Your Personal Settings

I am running Windows 2000 Pro and it was working just fine yesterday. This morning I go to turn it on and it's stuck on the loading your personal settings screen. It acts like it's about to load and than it restarts and does the same thing over and over. I did read somewhere that it probably has to do with a corrupted file in my settings...but since I'm the only one who uses the computer I don't have it set up to have more than one account setting. I can't even go into safe mode..the same thing happens. I did try to go to last known good configuration and that didn't do anything. It there a way I can log on without loading my personal settings? I can't think of anything I did yesterday that would cause this problem except that I ran a spyware scan with SpyBot and it deleted a few bad things. I also don't have a Windows boot CD since my computer was built by someone and he didn't give me the CD.

Preferred Solution: Stuck on Loading Your Personal Settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, one of my XP computers was infected with the FBI Moneypack virus. I booted into safe mode and ran a few scans with Malwarebytes and Bitdefender 2012 and both found nothing. I deleted the main profile and created a new user account. When I try to boot normally it takes a good 5-6 minutes at the "Widnows is loading" screen. Then I finally see the user account and when I click on the account and enter the password it just stays stuck at loading your personal settings. I can boot into safe mode with networking and load up the account just fine, however every time I do I noticed in Documents and Settings it creates a new profile folder which looks something like Username.Computername.000, and keeps adding a number every time I login. Not sure where I can go from here. Thanks in advance for any help.

I am having a major problem logging into windows. When I get to the log on screen, and click my user name (the only one available) it gets stuck on "loading personal settings".

My first reaction was to boot from CD, at which point I could not get my USB keyboard to work during the boot which made it impossible to "hit any key to boot from CD", so I fixed that by plugging the keyboard into the default keyboard port with an adaptor.

When I managed to boot from CD, I tried to do a repair install and got the message "Setup cannot find Hard disks bla bla cannot continue, windows will restart".

I have 2 hard drives in raid 0.

Sounds like your profile has become corrupt. Do you have any other accounts you can sign in with that have admin credentials?

This is almost identical situation as the previous post with this name, only with these differences:

- if I hit ENTER, then the destop appears immediately and I am able to start working.

- There are 3 users on this computer, all administrators, and this happens with 2. I can only logon normally with one user.

I have already tried the following, with no success:

- created another user. Same thing happened.
- removed AutoLogon through Control userpasswords2 feature. No changes in behavior.
- turned off all non essencial programs affecting the booting process. No changes in behavior.

Windows is activated. No problems here.
Also no wsaupdater.exe issue here.

Don't know what to do next...

Appreciate any help.

Hey guys! So umm, there's something wrong with the computer I can start the computer, click on my user icon, type in my password, and that's it. It says "loading personal settings" and it just stops there. My mouse doesn't freeze or anything but that's where it stops. It doesnt move for hours.. well after a few hours I just gave up and and turned it off. I could go into safe mode but it's really slow. I tried running defrag in DOS mode and umm.. it's still stuck at 24% I also tried restoring configurations back to a certain date when it was working fine but that didnt help. Should my last resort be FORMATTING O_O? Anyone out there who might know a solution? If you do please and thank you

A:stuck at "Loading Personal Settings"

Hello and Welcome to TSF

It sounds like you either didn't activate windows within the
30 day grace period or you ran into some spyware and it corrupted
a registry key or file.
Try a repair installation if you forgot to activate Windows within the 30 day grace period. This will reinstall Windows XP to your computer and your programs
and most of your settings will be just like you left them.

In some cases the spyware has corrupted a registry value on
clean up.

Now you will need to boot with the Windows XP CD to the recovery console, and copy userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe. And then you may be able to boot back normally and repair the registry entry.

So boot from your WinXP CD and when you reach the setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Choose the installation to log on to (if there's just one, hit enter). When prompted for password, just hit enter unless you have set a password for the user "Administrator" (it's blank by default in XP)

When you get logged onto the Recovery Console, go to c:\windows\system32 (or wherever Windows is installed).

Use the following commands.
cd \windows\system32
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Take the CD out of the drive, and type exit to quit the recovery console and restart Windows normally

Next if your booted up normally go to Start, Run, type regedit and navigate
to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersio... Read more

Hi. I'm having a problem at the moment with my personal settings not loading on XP. Whenever I load up the computerand click to login, it thinks about it for a few minutes before letting me into windows, but with literally all the default settings in place. The desktop is entirely reset, all my bookmarks are gone, programs where they shouldn't be, and so forth. though no error messages to speal of. At first it was happening scarcely, then more frequently, then every other day, and now it's every time I start up the machine. Now it's nothing a system restore isn't solving, so that's not a problem, but it is extremely irritating and wasting about twenty minutes of my time each day. Any idea what's causing the problem?

A:Personal settings not loading.

Your personal folder or the register for your personal in XP may be corrupte ( may also due to Virus)... first thing make sure your original folder information is still there..

Open My Computer > Choose "C: Drive" > "C:\Documents and Settings" >
you will see all people's profile folder in there .

you can goto you Username and see your stuff like photo.. music ... document .. is still there.

If still in there you may want to back these things up and do a New installation..

I am trying to fix a laptop for one of my users. The laptop is a Dell Latitude D610 2.13 Ghz, 512Mb. If you sign on with the network cable attached and try to log into the domain the laptop will sit at loading your personal settings and nothing. It has sit at least 30 minutes and nothing. If you reboot and log in with the network cable disconnected it will log in fine. I can't figure this one out.

I have renamed the users profile on the laptop to username.old and windows went through and recreated the profile. the only thing that might be a issue is the laptop was added to the domain on a different domain controller. the user is out of alabama and working here temporarily. According to him this laptop has never logged in before so I'm not sure if that is a problem or not.

Thanks in advance.

Hi PetrosP and welcome to TSF !

Repeatedly press F8 during startup to bring up a menu before Windows starts then choose to load the last known good config. Tell us if you have any luck with that.

If not, try to start the computer in safe mode (same menu as before) and see if you can log successfully into your account there.

hi, for the past few days my xp sp3 notebook has been slow on the "loading personal settings" page - taking say about 20 seconds to load instead of going straight through to the desktop. This happens on the account I use on a daily basis. I have another account that I use for downloading programs or updates, and there is no such lag with that. I have run a malwarebytes scan and nothing was found. Event viewer did show that yesterday my AV program did not start properly first time but that was only yesterday, nothing showed up for the previous days or today. I tried creating a new account thinking that maybe my normal account is becoming corrupted, and then logged in to it - that also was slow as above, but maybe that is because it was a brand new account? Would you have any idea what if anything could be going wrong with the original account? Any ideas much appreciated.

Hi, felony0513
We will try to help but were going to need alot more info. I would first reboot and hit F8 key and try to go into Last Known Cofiguration That Worked and see if it will boot. Many things can cause a PC to hang (Dirty PC, PSU, HEAT, CPU, RAM, Viruses, Spyware, HD) are just a few. We will need the specs on your PC. How long this has been going on etc.,etc., before we can even attempt to help you. If you do get it booted up the first thing I would do is SAVE YOU DATA. Depending on the issue you may loose it.
Please post back with what ever you can.

Hi Everyone,

We have about 1500 PC's which we are migrating from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. We are running a piolt for a month to iron out any problems with Windows XP and Office 2007, so curently only have about 20 PC's on our new Windows 2003 domain.

Last week all the PC's on the new domain started to take ages logging in, you login with local or domain creds and then it just shows a blue screen for about 20 seconds and then starts to load up the "applying personal settings". First I thought it was profile related but it happens on every account domain or local and the wait is before the profile has started to load. Evan happens if I unjoin domain. It don't happen when logging directly into the DC's or any member servers.

I have checked for viruses and spyware and nothing is found. No updates have been applied to the PC's in the period before or since the problem started. Also there is nothing in the event logs to suggest any problems.

Any ideas??

Thanks Rich

Good afternoon, my computer (an old dinosaur of an E-Machine) has been hanging up after i've selected a user and inserted the password and it begins loading personal settings.

I have gotten a few "low on virtual memory" warnings that helped to explain this but I have expanded the memory, and cleared out as much space as I can for the RAM by deleting temporary internet files, and disabling certain startup programs and processes. This includes disabling my Spyware Doctor which was sucking up most of the space.

I have uninstalled an old Norton Antivirus that had gotten lost in the background, since I thought perhaps it had been corrupted and this resulted in the problem. That does not seem to have fixed the problem. I have also run Malwarebytes several times but it has detected nothing.

I have run TweakNow Registry cleaner several times to see if I could fix the problem but it was all to no avail. I can enter the computer via safemode or by entering into a low memory usage mode (alt + tab) and everything seems to be working smoothly once I am inside.

The mouse and keyboard are both responsive when it hangs up, the Windows XP just seems unwilling to load the users. It also continues to insist that it is low on virtual memory despite my having cleaned it out. Either something unseen is using up all the virtual memory, or for some reason it is just not registering that it has the space.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all very much.

Hi, recently, I downloaded a game software and it didn't work on my PC. So I tried a variety of things suggested to me by people, downloading avast! Virus Cleaner and many other things. Eventually I ended up on my Task Manager's 'Process' tab and this is around when my problem started.

I started shutting off processes I didn't need, to see if maybe unneeded or infected processes were what was causing my problem with the game. Then, right after I shut off a process (I'm not sure which process precisely) I got an error message saying that I should save all my documents and shut down the computer. The message had a countdown (to shutting off the computer I presume) and otherwise, I didn't read though it thoroughly.

So I restarted my computer, and everything was fine and pretty much the same until I got to the log-on screen. There, I typed in my password, got in, and the screen just started hanging at 'Loading Your Personal Settings'.

I tried googling this many times, to no avail, I tried restarting in Safe Mode, shutting off again, Ctrl+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, so many I can't even think of them all. Nothing worked. I have the same problem in Safe Mode as well.

I think it's likely that either

Last weekend I upgraded a small office from a File Server (WOrkGroup peer-to-perr) to a MS-SBS2003 domainServer environment.

The installation went smooth. All clients are running WINXP and able to join the new domain just fine.

The problem is when each PC starts, it shows "Loading Personal Settings" and that takes much longer comparing when they were networked to the previous File Server. After a long say couple of minutes (or more to some PCs) then every appears as usual and the speed is just fine as before, just the initial load.

This is happening to ALL Pcs right after joining the new Domain server.

Also there are 2 PCs previously sharing a printer which attached to a PC close-by, I mapped the printer for the 2 users to share, and with no reason the 2 clients will lose connection (during teh day) to that printer. I attempt to remap the printer but failed to find the shared printer, after I reboot the client then I can find and remap again.

Can someone shed some light on my problem above please please?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition (SP1 I believe). When i go to log on to either of the screennames on the computer, both admin, one password protected, it hangs for several minutes on "Loading your personal settings..."
It loads eventually, but when it does the hard drive makes an audible grunting sound and the desktop loads up normal except for the taskbar. Most programs work properly (at least through the desktop shortcuts that I have), however Windows Media Player refuses to even load at all, and the only way I can get to my documents is through My Computer, however I am unable to open anything in any folders that aren't .exe files. Pictures, videos, pretty much any media is unresponsive and it seems that only .txt files will open.
I have tried to open windows in safe mode, but the taskbar still doesn't open and it is EXTREMELY slow, with the same side effects as stated before.
Now, i most situations, I would simply borrow a reformat disc from a friend, but I'd rather not lose all of my music and videos.
If possible, I need to get this issue sorted out extremely quickly, as I'm lacking on some fairly important files on that computer. Any other details I can give, just ask and I'll see what I can do. Open to suggestions, pretty much anything logical.

A:Login hangs on "Loading your personal settings..." loads after a few minutes, but...

Im getting a really annoying problem where my computer will get as far as "loading your personal settings" screen and basically hang up.

I had a virus infection just recently which i cleaned up. A few days later my computer started doing this. It boots up normally until it gets to the "loading your personal settings" screen then it will not go any further.

The mouse responds and there is hard disk activity but nothing happens. I also don't get the windows start-up sound. It will do this probably 9 times out of ten. When it does boot up all the way it works fine and runs perfectly. I had it running for 3 days without any problems.

Some more info:I have tried unplugging the computer from my router, this had no apparent effect.
The computer will boot up fine every time in safe mode & safe mode with networking
I have disabled everything in the start-up apart from AVG FREE edition. This has not had any apparent effect
I ran a check-disk last night and it found no errors.
when it hangs up, ctrl+alt+del does not work, alt+tab also does not do anything
I have downloaded the latest AVG setup file and ran a repair install, this had no apparent effect
I haven't ran system file checker since as the system works fine in safe mode i assume that the system files are probably fine.
i had avast on the system but it got really screwed up so in the end i used the avast uninstall tool to remove it.

I currently have left it sitting at "loading your persona... Read more

A:Irritating boot problem (hanging at "loading your personal settings")

Hi cloudflint, only a question, have you try to create another user profile to verify if the problem persists on another account?
It seems to be a profile problem..

From what I can find on this subject, it seems to be an old problem, but I can't find an answer I can use. I have a Dell desktop, running Windows XP Home, and just two days ago I got the problem where it will let me sign into my account (I only have one set up) but it hangs at "loading personal settings". I tried to do load up in Safe Mode but the same thing happens - and I left it on (both times) overnight and nothing happened. I don't know what else to do short of reformatting and reinstalling Windows.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I recently downloaded a program from downloads.com (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=wav+to+mp3&tg=dl-2001) one of those... to convert wav to mp3.

When I downloaded it, the stuff came with LOADS of spyware and ads, such as SaveNow and RedSwoosh and crap like that. I quickly uninstalled all that crap using "Install/Uninstall Programs" in Control Panel.

But I noticed after uninstalling it all, that everytime I start up my computer and click on my account, the computer hangs on "Loading Personal Settings..." for about a minute. I'm not sure if the download is related, but maybe is messed with one of my settings or drivers... ?

Howdy! I'm happy to have found this outstanding community. I have a very superficial question, but I would love it if I could find a solution.

I'm trying to customize my netbook's startup; it uses XP sp3. I've already changed to boot screen (with the progress bar). I also changed the background displayed at the login/welcome screen.

I was all happy, thinking that I had completely changed everything, but when I restarted, there is still an ugly blue "loading your personal settings" screen that comes up after the welcome screen.

Does anyone know how to change the appearance of this screen or the registry values associated with it? I deeply appreciate your time.

A:Customizing the "loading your personal settings" screen

" was to click on the Change the way users log on or off link and uncheck the Use the Welcome Screen option."

Most of the time my XP Pro Sp2 system freezes upon booting and will not get past the "Loading Your Personal Settings" screen. I can do a hard restart two or three times and encounter the same thing. However, I can boot into the desktop in Safe Mode, and when I restart after that everything is normal.

I'm booting into an administrator account, using the welcome screen with no password, and loading very little upon startup, basically Norton AV and Firewall, that's it.

No virii, no spyware, no trojans, etc. All hardware diagnostics perfect.

I've searched the internet for hours and found nothing.

Well, I was trying to add the Japanese language pack to my Windows XP Professional and all seemed fine until I rebooted. Once I get to the "welcome" screen, when I attempt to enter a user account Windows briefly displays "Loading your personal settings..." and then the message disappears as though I hadn't tried to log onto a user account at all. The same problem persists in safe mode and when trying to boot from the last working setting. Additionally, this happens on both password protected and non-password protected accounts.

Is there anything I can do to boot besides a clean install?

A:"Loading your personal settings..." no boot

So, you have tried to log in as a different user and it still hangs?
Boot off of the Windows Disc and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

I have a slight problem with my computer booting up. I`m on XP PRO, and when I get to Loading Personal Settings the pc hangs for about 15-20 seconds. This never used to happen and I was hoping someone could shed some light on it.

A:Problems with "Loading Personal Settings"`

Disabled Simple File Sharing and edited usage rights on WLNOTIFY.dll after editing the registry in order to attain verbose messages during Load personal Settings. This told me WGALOGON.dll and WLNOTIFY.dll were taking a longtime to run so I renamed WGALOGON.dll to .OLD. Still no luck.

I am having trouble with my mother's computer. When I type in the password to log in the "Loading Your Personal Settings" screen appears and stays. The computer has sat overnight twice and it has not went away. I have tried running the computer in safe mode and the other modes as well many a time, but yet it does the same thing. This computer was given to my mother by a friend so we have no Windows Installation CD as we do with our other computers and I'm trying to avoid buying Windows XP again. Please help if there is any way possible to at least get past this and see if there is anything that is causing the problem.

I tried using the driver CD to see if it will help with anything rebooting and I did some Express Test. It gave me this code:
Error Code:    650F:136C
Msg:    IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data (Resource CD, Installation CD).
Have no clue what it is. Ive done some reading on Mup.sys. It requires me to remove some 'USB card'. I dont really see any . Any advice would be appreciated or if you have anymore further queries let me know.

A:Stuck on Mup.sys (during safe mode) and stuck on Windows XP loading screen.

HI Jon,
Thats not  a error to worry about.
That error comes up when u run express test on the computer and the cd drive is empty.
Are we working on a notebook or a desktop.
And mup.sys is a system file .You can repiar mup.sys by following these steps.
1>Start the computer from the Windows Xp CD.2>At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair. 3>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren c:windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys mup.old4>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:expand <cd-romdrive>:\i386\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys5>After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console. 6>Restart the computer.
Best of Luck.
