New T580, CPU always at full clock even when idling

Q: New T580, CPU always at full clock even when idling

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum as I just bought a nice T580 with i7 8550U Intel CPU. So far the machine is amazing, it's my first Lenovo (I'm coming from a MS Surface Pro 3) and I'm happy with it, except for one thing: When AC is plugged on, the CPU clock always goes to max speed (3.8-4.0GHz), even if the load is at 0%. That means that the laptot heats more and the fan kicks in very fast if you start to do something, even if it's only web browsing. That's really annoying.Everything goes back to normal if I unplug AC and work on battery. The CPU immediately lowers the clock, as you can see on my screens. Here are all the tricks I already tried: - Changing power modes by clicking on the battery icon on the desktop. This doesn't do anything when AC is plugged. But this works perfectly if I unplug it.- Resetting the BIOS. No changes.- Changing BIOS AC power settings with the same values as for battery power settings. No changes on Windows 10, still at 100% clock speed.- Restoring Windows 10. 2 times. Still no changes. I even used the Lenovo recovery tool to factory reset it. It's not a software problem as this happens already after the very first startup of Windows 10.- Downgrade the BIOS to rev. 1.06. No changes. I'm currently using the latest 1.09. I don't know what to do now. I asked some people on Reddit and they don't seem to have the problem. I run out of ideas. Could you help me? Thank's in advance for all your answers!Florian On batteryAC powered

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This may seem strange, but this is what i need:
a little application that i can put on any computer that, when i run it, will display a black screen with the current time in red block (digital style) numerals as read from the time set in the computer( windows).
BUT, i only want the current minute portion of the time displayed.
This is for use in an environment where things are time dependent and happens every 30 minutes on the 1/2 hour.

The quality of the graphics should be as high as possible so as to be seen clearly form a distance of 150 feet this will be displayed on anything from a 19 inch monitor up to a 50 inch plasma so should be scalable.

any thoughts on how this can be accomplished?

Greetings,

I am trying to compare between two video cards that are very similar, and I'd like some other opinions on which would be the better purchase. The differences are subtle but I am not experienced enough to know how large the effective payout difference will be.

-=-=-
The first card is here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102834

It is a SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100273L Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. The Core Clock is at 650 MHz, the Memory Clock is at 1000 MHz. The final price would be $102.

-=-=-
The second card is here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161296

It is a HIS H485FM1GH Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. The Core Clock is at 625 MHz, the Memory Clock is at 1986MHz. The final price would be $109.

-=-=-

My comparison so far is that Card 1 has 25 more MHz Core, but 986 Mhz less Memory Clock.
Warranties are the same.
I cannot truly tell, but it seems like the fan on card 1 is less robust than card 2. Can someone confirm this?
As far as my research has led me, the manufacturers themselves are not very different.
GRAM, SPU's, etc., are all identical between the cards. The main difference is in the two clock speeds.

The most major question is this: will a gain of 25MHz in the core clock be more beneficial to high-end gaming with a loss of 986 MHz in Memory Clock? My gut feeling i... Read more

I'm havving issues with a brand new Precision 3620 workstation.
The processor is an Intel 6700K  4Ghz base clock and 4.2Ghz turbo clock.
1) For any kind single threaded task it always runs at 4Ghz and never at 4.2Ghz.
How can I make it run at turbo speed (bios is set so it should) ?
2) For multithreading tasks using all cores (also using SIMD) the clock drops to 3.6Ghz
Using Intel power gadget I measure 60Watt power consumption and 54 degrees C.
(Test is Prime95 using blend mode test, so not max heat small FFT test)

I find this clock behavior quite unacceptable for a PC sold as workstation.
Using the Intel Extreme Tuning tool I can fix issue 2) by rasing the Processor Core IccMax from 92A to 110A.  This indicates wrong CPU setting in the bios, but these hidden settings are not visible to be changed.
Issue 1) I can not fix.
Is there any way to correct these issues ?

And old Windows problem has finally reared its ugly head on my system: "clock drift". My Windows clock keeps losing time. About 1 minute by the end of the day.

My CMOS clock is fine and is NOT losing time. I shut my PC off at night, automatically correcting the Windows clock when I restart the next morning. But my scheduled tasks later in the day will start late as the Windows clock slowly loses time.

I've edited the Registry to update "Internet Time" daily instead of weekly, but the time of day that the clock updates fluctuates, sometimes updating in the morning (which is unhelpful.)

"Clock drift" is a problem that has been around since Windows-3.0. As the number of background tasks grows, the software clock has a tendency to lose time.

Since my CMOS clock is just fine and and polling the Internet NTS (Network Time Server) sometimes fails (about 15% of the time), I was wondering if there was a simple way to automatically resync the Windows clock with my CMOS clock?

TIA.

A:Clock Drift driving me nuts. Any way to sync to CMOS clock?

Here's a link to a constantly updated list of NIST servers.

NIST Internet Time Service

If you search for your existing host in Regedit and substitute one from my list for the preset one you should also stumble upon a registry setting to increase the frequency of synchronisation.

It goes without saying you should back up your registry first, as a safety precaution

Hi have a big problem at the school that i work at:

all of a sudden, the network has fallen over.

what is happening is some of our clients will authenticate on one server, some clients will authenticate on the other server and some wont authenticate at all and produce an error message stating that

"There is a time difference between the client and server and is unable to log you on"

the odd thing is, the servers can not see each other. if we go to my network places on say our admin server, and try to connect to the pupil server it will say

"the servers clock is not syncoronizing with the primary domain controllers clock"

If we try to force a replication on the servers, we get the message

"there is a time difference between the client and server"

i think we have established that is a problem with the time settings on the server but dont know where to start

any ideas!!!

any help to websites or info will be very useful

Your help is appreciated

at both 3D and 2D mode, using GPU-Z 0.3.0.0 and ati 8.12 catalyst control center
I know that in 3D mode it should be at 750MHZ and 900MHz and 2D at 507MHz and 500MHz(2gpu).
I have un-installed and re-installed the 8.12ccc
with no change at all, also using driver cleaner(in safe mode) when un-installing.
I get no arifacts as I use ExpertTool V4.0, enable fan contol for cooling while playing games.
Its just the card will not run at its full potentuall or how it should. Can you please help!!!

what happens when you set it to the default values..?? will the settings stick..??

not sure about ATI but i know the new nvidia cards have a power saving feature which drops the clocks when idle, kind of like Intel SpeedStep..

here's where my card clocks currently sit while its idle..
you can see they are far below stock clocks, maybe ATI have a similar feature in they're newer drivers..... have you checked to see if the clocks jump up when you stress the card.??

A:is there any program about CLOCK for window 7 (not pc clock )

Windows 7 clock must work properly.
You could add a dozen clocks and it won't solve the problem.

You are referring to the motherboard bios battery. That what allows the bios and Windows 7 to keep time.

The batteries cost less than $4.00.
You will have to reset the time in bios and Windows 7 after changing the battery.

I have a brand new T580 in front of me. I am trying unsuccessfully to boot it from a USB stick. In case it makes any difference I am trying to do this before ever booting into Windows. Here is what I have tried. First attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F12 at Startup Interupt Menu; Select my USB drive from list; Hit Enter; screen goes back for about one second and then the F12 menu reappears like nothing happened. Force power off by pressing and holding the power button. Second attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F1 at Startup Interupt Menu; to eter the BIOS Setup. Disable secure boot (Security > Secure Boot). Save (F10); repeat first attempt. Same result. Third attempt: as before except that I additionally set Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both and tried again. Same result. Fourth attmpt: as before except that I changed the boot priority to put legacy first. Same result. Fifth attempt: as before except that I set  Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot  to Legacy Only. Same result. The USB stick has Grub on it and boots Linux distributions. It works in about a dozen other machines that I use it on regularly.  I tried two separate USB sticks and I tried both USB ports on the right-hand side of the computer. If I can't get this to work then it's going back. I am stuck. Hello everyone,I would like to take advantage of the current sale on T line (since I kind of need the laptop ASAP). Hence all the questions: 1. I am planning to get the UHD screen. Some places reference it as 100% AdobeRGB while the shopping page just says 400 nit. How accurate are the colors, really? I do some photography editing on the go, so this would be a great thing to have. 2. Speaking of UHD screen - how big of a power drain should I expect? I plan on getting smallest batteries to minimize the weight and then purchasing an extra batter (probably the large one) to supplement for cases when I'll be away from power outlets for extended periods. Any recommendations here would be great. 3. Upgradability - I want to order the cheapest HDD because instead $200 that Lenovo is asking for 256GB NVMe drive I can buy a 500GB 970 @ $140 or 1 TB @ $277. If ordered with regular (spin) disk - do I have a hardware present to use NVMe HDD? Or do I need to order additional cable? 4. Temperatures - how hot does it get under heavy loads? Thanks in advance for responses.

Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so.  1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on?  4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them?  Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u).  Thanks!

Hi,

This is my first post here, and my computer appears to be infected.

The Symptoms:
-- The desktop has "disappeared" and is replaced by a blank blue screen. The icons on the desktop are all gone.
-- There is no "bar" at the bottom: no start button, no task bar, no clock, no indications of open programs. i.e., the entire screen is blue.

-- However, the situation is different right after I start-up.
-- At first, I see all my programs. Sometimes I see the task bar and start button, clock, etc., sometimes not.
-- But something is wrong even then. The computer is slow. And I know desktop will not last long. Sometimes if I am quick I can double click on a desktop icon before the desktop disappears.
-- Sometimes there is a "transition" period. For a few seconds I'll see the desktop, then for a few it will go "all blue".
-- When it is "all blue", I can still get into programs. If I open up the task manager, I can click on the "New Task ..." button under the "Applications" tab.
-- I can still work with documents, but thinks are slow.
-- When I start in safe mode, I still have the problem of the missing desktop.

Other Signs:
-- When I can see the clock, it says "VIRUS ALERT!" followed by the time. My google searches inform me that this is a common symptom.

What I have done so far:
-- I've done the Norton "Quick Scan" -- found something the first time, and fixed i... Read more

Hi,I'm trying to configure a ThinkPad T580 but I have many doubts about the choice of the monitor Choices are:- 15,6" IPS FHD (1.920 x 1.080)- 15,6" IPS UHD (3.840 x 2.160) I'm not able to find information about the srgb coverage of the two options.I will mainly use the laptop for music creation and for photo editing and the% of srgb coverage is very important.Someone can tell me where to find this information? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english....Ale

Hello- this is my first post to the Lenovo community forums. I just received a brand-new T580, custom ordered directly from Lenovo. If it matters, this was supposed to have a 500GB spinning disk and 16GB SSD (Intel Optane PCIe). Windows 10 was the only option for pre-installed OS (Professional, in this case). This new machine will not boot and has yet to boot. I received it on a Friday afternoon. Once I unboxed and charged it and tried to boot, tech support conveniently closed for the whole weekend. I opened a ticket in Lenovo's MTSA (yet another account to open), with no response. Now I am turning to the forums. I installed the battery and charged it, then attempted to boot. My first attempt resulted in INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, then rebooted. The same thing happened again, then started "Automatic Repair" Automatic Repair (a/k/a Startup Repair) did nothing, probably because there is no existing image to revert to or older version of Windows to fall back on. I get the following errors: "System Restore: To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore." (Of course, that does not happen-this is a brand-new laptop) Then "Re-image Your Computer: An internal error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002)" (Good luck!) I ran all the Lenovo diagnostics, and they all pass with flying colors. I also like that my display... Read more

First... long time T series user going back to the initial ones. Had been using a T520 up until I finally gave in and purchased a T580 over the BF in July sale. Since I have been using a dock for a long time and like the convenience factor I got the Pro Dock (40AH0135US) to go along with the T580. Long story short... the first T580 arrives with a blown system board. I send it back and 11 days later another T580 arrives. This one boots and has no issues off the dock. It's fast and definitely an upgrade from the T520. First thing I notice in placing it on the dock is that the side mount process is tedious. Reading other posts seems to confirm that experience. It's nowhere near as well engineered as the bottom dock solution and I spend more time trying to insert the dock mechanism than I ever had with the legacy dock solutions. I eventually get things perfectly aligned and power on. Right off the neither external monitor is working. I have two Dell UHD monitors connected to the DP's on the dock and neither comes on. I mess with the cables and nothing, I take the T580 off and re-insert... nothing. I call Lenovo and without even trying to diagnose the issue they issue an RMA for the dock. I get another dock 2 days later and this one works for exactly 1 day. The external monitors work and then 10 hours later when I come home from my job and place the T580 on the dock they don't work. Nothing changes but somehow things are back to not working again. To be clear at no point from powe... Read more

Hello All, What is the Thunderbolt 3 port on my Thinkpad T580 in relation to the cables that I find online? This is my first computer with USB C and Thunderbolt 3 so I'm having to buy new cables. The Thunderbolt port in my T580 has a horizontal piece in the middle with a tiny vertical bit at each end of the horizontal piece, all of this being inside the port. All the Thunderbolt 3 cables that I see online look a bit like they would fit into a USB C / USB 3.1 port. I have spent hours trawling online and also on Amazon and other sales sites looking for a diagram or similar showing what a Thunderbolt 3 and a USB 3 ports are supposed to look like, with no success. I also see for sale on sites what seems to be cables for USB 3 compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 looking like the same thing but when I look at the ports in my T580 these ports are distinctly different. Sorry to write so much but I've lost hours searching for the answer not wanting to write such an apparently stupid question ! ToutouVik

Please advise if Lenovo can deliver T580 with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional as out of box delivery so save several tinkering hours at user's garage. It had been tremendous performance issues with T570 with Windows 10 resource hog experience. I would not prefer to run Windows 10 again on T580 - high performance machine hogged by Windows 10. If Lenovo could pre-install downgrade option out of the box that would save several hours of research by end users, T580 with Windows 7 would perform more stable and solid provided if they have enabled all the drivers to function properly.  This has been hugely frustrating experiencing to deal with T570 machine running Windows-10 Pro, I had to dump the machine. I dont have much confidence to run T580 on windows 10 pro, it would not even match T520 machine ( 7 years old machine) running on Windows -10. Looking forward for the solution, request Lenovo team to enable Downgrade option as part of the customization to save users's time and stable user experience. If Lenovo Does not deliver out of the box, first thing to do after the machine is to wipe out Windows 10 to install, Please let us know if the drivers available or I would be placing a ticket to go through 100 steps to get it done.  Thank you,Mamba.

I'm about to order a T580 today and I see there is a choice of "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear". Does anyone own the 48Wh battery for the T580 (or T570) so that they can confirm if the 48Wh batter sticks out at all? I want a battery that does not raise the laptop. Also where can I buy a second (spare) battery that is exactly the same as the "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear"? Are there any accurate pictures of the 6cell 48Wh battery online someone can send me a link to? Thanks in advance. My first post!

Brand new T580 (20L9) and feel like I have had batter problems from the start. I have updated all there is to update to try to solve the problem but now have hit a dead end. Battery 1 currently says 0% and not charging and does not recognize it anymore I think.  Where do I go from here? I have looked around and seen other models with similar problems but nothing seems to come to a clear conlcusion on how to solve this.

Hello everyone,I'm planning to buy my first Thinkpad, probably a 8th gen Intel processor one. I read this on the T580 specifications sheet : "System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage" but that doesn't seem clear to me.I found here someone else who as the exact same, unfortunately unanswered, question :System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage. Why I cannot use it with dual drive setup. One fast but low capacity PCIe NVMe ssd on the M.2 slot and another high capacity hard drive on the regular 2.5" HDD bay. Why one or another but not both? I couldn't find a simple and clear answer to that question
