New T580, CPU always at full clock even when idling

Q: New T580, CPU always at full clock even when idling

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum as I just bought a nice T580 with i7 8550U Intel CPU. So far the machine is amazing, it's my first Lenovo (I'm coming from a MS Surface Pro 3) and I'm happy with it, except for one thing: When AC is plugged on, the CPU clock always goes to max speed (3.8-4.0GHz), even if the load is at 0%. That means that the laptot heats more and the fan kicks in very fast if you start to do something, even if it's only web browsing. That's really annoying.Everything goes back to normal if I unplug AC and work on battery. The CPU immediately lowers the clock, as you can see on my screens. Here are all the tricks I already tried: - Changing power modes by clicking on the battery icon on the desktop. This doesn't do anything when AC is plugged. But this works perfectly if I unplug it.- Resetting the BIOS. No changes.- Changing BIOS AC power settings with the same values as for battery power settings. No changes on Windows 10, still at 100% clock speed.- Restoring Windows 10. 2 times. Still no changes. I even used the Lenovo recovery tool to factory reset it. It's not a software problem as this happens already after the very first startup of Windows 10.- Downgrade the BIOS to rev. 1.06. No changes. I'm currently using the latest 1.09. I don't know what to do now. I asked some people on Reddit and they don't seem to have the problem. I run out of ideas. Could you help me? Thank's in advance for all your answers!Florian On batteryAC powered

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We have several T480 and T580 i5 laptops and have had nothing but headaches with these.  They blue screen and randomly shut off for no apparent reason.  While trying to resolve one of these, I came across a forum about the i7 version of these running CPU at full clock, so I started looking into this as a possibility for our issues.  So far, the same holds true for the i5 version.  These computers are supposed to have a max performance of 1.7 and 1.6 GHz with a max turbo performance of 3.4 GHz.  Every computer I have looked at so far has been running at 3.45 GHz.  The only changes we made to the power/cpu settings are OS settings that all computers get, but ONLY the T480's and T580's are in overclocking speeds (barely, but it's still overclocking).  We have had these computers for about 6 months and this is starting to cause hardware failures due to overheating.  Now that we know we have faulty firmware on these computers, we may be able to prevent future hardware failures, but this is something that your team needs to address.  This could actually be seen as scandalous practice since the forum discussing the issue with the i7 versions is about a year old and 4 BIOS versions ago.  Supposedly, this issue was fixed in a BIOS update to version 1.15, but our computers are on 1.18 and 1.19 (which the Lenovo Updater [tvsu.exe] did not find, I had to manually download).  This needs to be fixed because this is causing hardwar... This may seem strange, but this is what i need:
a little application that i can put on any computer that, when i run it, will display a black screen with the current time in red block (digital style) numerals as read from the time set in the computer( windows).
BUT, i only want the current minute portion of the time displayed.
This is for use in an environment where things are time dependent and happens every 30 minutes on the 1/2 hour.

The quality of the graphics should be as high as possible so as to be seen clearly form a distance of 150 feet this will be displayed on anything from a 19 inch monitor up to a 50 inch plasma so should be scalable.

any thoughts on how this can be accomplished?

I refer to another similar complain post, I just met a similar problem with lenovo bad screen quality and poor customer service. I bought Thinkpad T580 laptop last year and used in a  normal  environment (always on the desk in my home). One day I found there is a 2x2cm light/white spot on the screen bottom area, which can only be observed when the screen background is in white color. Lenovo told me that it's cased by outside pressure  and they are not covering my screen replacement  under warranty. I own another thinkpad x260 which use in my daily and oversea business travel for over three years and everything is still fine. That's why I purchase T580 for my home use. It is disppointing  that Lenovo can  not  stand behind their product and stand behind their promise to customers (warranty).  Lenovo advertises the Thinkpad T580 as following on their webside: "We test ThinkPads against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 quality checks to ensure they run in extreme conditions. From the arctic wilderness to desert dust storms, from zero-gravity to spills and drops, you can trust your T Series device to handle whatever life throws your way." I disgree with their statement and  not going to pay ~$295 parts+ ~30 labour total around 325 to fix my screen. Very disapointed with Lenovo quality and customer service, I won't consider Lenovo again if there is another choice.

I am trying to compare between two video cards that are very similar, and I'd like some other opinions on which would be the better purchase. The differences are subtle but I am not experienced enough to know how large the effective payout difference will be.

The first card is here:

It is a SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100273L Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. The Core Clock is at 650 MHz, the Memory Clock is at 1000 MHz. The final price would be $102.

The second card is here:

It is a HIS H485FM1GH Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. The Core Clock is at 625 MHz, the Memory Clock is at 1986MHz. The final price would be $109.

My comparison so far is that Card 1 has 25 more MHz Core, but 986 Mhz less Memory Clock.
Warranties are the same.
I cannot truly tell, but it seems like the fan on card 1 is less robust than card 2. Can someone confirm this?
As far as my research has led me, the manufacturers themselves are not very different.
GRAM, SPU's, etc., are all identical between the cards. The main difference is in the two clock speeds.

The most major question is this: will a gain of 25MHz in the core clock be more beneficial to high-end gaming with a loss of 986 MHz in Memory Clock? My gut feeling i... Read more

I'm havving issues with a brand new Precision 3620 workstation.
The processor is an Intel 6700K  4Ghz base clock and 4.2Ghz turbo clock.
1) For any kind single threaded task it always runs at 4Ghz and never at 4.2Ghz.
How can I make it run at turbo speed (bios is set so it should) ?
2) For multithreading tasks using all cores (also using SIMD) the clock drops to 3.6Ghz
Using Intel power gadget I measure 60Watt power consumption and 54 degrees C.
(Test is Prime95 using blend mode test, so not max heat small FFT test)

I find this clock behavior quite unacceptable for a PC sold as workstation.
Using the Intel Extreme Tuning tool I can fix issue 2) by rasing the Processor Core IccMax from 92A to 110A.  This indicates wrong CPU setting in the bios, but these hidden settings are not visible to be changed.
Issue 1) I can not fix.
Is there any way to correct these issues ?

And old Windows problem has finally reared its ugly head on my system: "clock drift". My Windows clock keeps losing time. About 1 minute by the end of the day.

My CMOS clock is fine and is NOT losing time. I shut my PC off at night, automatically correcting the Windows clock when I restart the next morning. But my scheduled tasks later in the day will start late as the Windows clock slowly loses time.

I've edited the Registry to update "Internet Time" daily instead of weekly, but the time of day that the clock updates fluctuates, sometimes updating in the morning (which is unhelpful.)

"Clock drift" is a problem that has been around since Windows-3.0. As the number of background tasks grows, the software clock has a tendency to lose time.

Since my CMOS clock is just fine and and polling the Internet NTS (Network Time Server) sometimes fails (about 15% of the time), I was wondering if there was a simple way to automatically resync the Windows clock with my CMOS clock?

A:Clock Drift driving me nuts. Any way to sync to CMOS clock?

Here's a link to a constantly updated list of NIST servers.

If you search for your existing host in Regedit and substitute one from my list for the preset one you should also stumble upon a registry setting to increase the frequency of synchronisation.

It goes without saying you should back up your registry first, as a safety precaution

Hi have a big problem at the school that i work at:

all of a sudden, the network has fallen over.

what is happening is some of our clients will authenticate on one server, some clients will authenticate on the other server and some wont authenticate at all and produce an error message stating that

"There is a time difference between the client and server and is unable to log you on"

the odd thing is, the servers can not see each other. if we go to my network places on say our admin server, and try to connect to the pupil server it will say

"the servers clock is not syncoronizing with the primary domain controllers clock"

If we try to force a replication on the servers, we get the message

"there is a time difference between the client and server"

i think we have established that is a problem with the time settings on the server but dont know where to start

any ideas!!!

any help to websites or info will be very useful

Your help is appreciated

I know that in 3D mode it should be at 750MHZ and 900MHz and 2D at 507MHz and 500MHz(2gpu).
I have un-installed and re-installed the 8.12ccc
with no change at all, also using driver cleaner(in safe mode) when un-installing.
I get no arifacts as I use ExpertTool V4.0, enable fan contol for cooling while playing games.

what happens when you set it to the default values..?? will the settings stick..??

not sure about ATI but i know the new nvidia cards have a power saving feature which drops the clocks when idle, kind of like Intel SpeedStep..

here's where my card clocks currently sit while its idle..
you can see they are far below stock clocks, maybe ATI have a similar feature in they're newer drivers..... have you checked to see if the clocks jump up when you stress the card.??

A:is there any program about CLOCK for window 7 (not pc clock )

Windows 7 clock must work properly.
You could add a dozen clocks and it won't solve the problem.

You are referring to the motherboard bios battery. That what allows the bios and Windows 7 to keep time.

The batteries cost less than $4.00.
You will have to reset the time in bios and Windows 7 after changing the battery.

This is my first post here, and my computer appears to be infected.

The Symptoms:
-- The desktop has "disappeared" and is replaced by a blank blue screen. The icons on the desktop are all gone.
-- There is no "bar" at the bottom: no start button, no task bar, no clock, no indications of open programs. i.e., the entire screen is blue.

-- However, the situation is different right after I start-up.
-- At first, I see all my programs. Sometimes I see the task bar and start button, clock, etc., sometimes not.
-- But something is wrong even then. The computer is slow. And I know desktop will not last long. Sometimes if I am quick I can double click on a desktop icon before the desktop disappears.
-- Sometimes there is a "transition" period. For a few seconds I'll see the desktop, then for a few it will go "all blue".
-- When it is "all blue", I can still get into programs. If I open up the task manager, I can click on the "New Task ..." button under the "Applications" tab.
-- I can still work with documents, but thinks are slow.
-- When I start in safe mode, I still have the problem of the missing desktop.

Other Signs:
-- When I can see the clock, it says "VIRUS ALERT!" followed by the time. My google searches inform me that this is a common symptom.

What I have done so far:
-- I've done the Norton "Quick Scan" -- found something the first time, and fixed i... Read more

Somthing must be using power somewhere. I have seen alot of downloadable programs that show you every process (sometimes it has things that 'task mgr.' does not show), or you could remove one software item at a time and see if one of them is doing it. Try rebooting (nothing else) and see if this occurs every time or just off and on. I've had it happen quite a few times myself and it is maddening.

I am using an nvidia gtx 660ti and I am monitoring with HWmonitor. I have used BP before and ran rogue killer which successfully terminates it but it does come back after a restart or 20 minutes. I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of fully removing this from my system. Some other information, my CPU and RAM loads while this is happening are unchanging-they are not affected.
I have pasted in the dds log as well as attached my "attach.txt."

If you are overclocking any hardware, STOP. Reset any changed values back to default.

McAfee is a frequent cause of BSOD's. Please remove it using its removal tool from here:

Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase

Microsoft Security Essentials is recommended from a strict BSOD perspective.

Microsoft Security Essentials, Free antivirus for windows
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free

When i leave my htpc on by accident while watching a film, i usually come back to the htpc still on but the tv screen is sitting at the black "input 2" screen, as if the tv is no longer getting a feed from my htpc. When i move my cursor on my wireless keyboard, the image comes back and i see my paused movie.

If i want to stop this blackout from occuring, is it the tv or htpc's setting i must adjust and where exactly? Samsung tv here and running win 10 32-bit

Task Manager shows that my CPU usage is at about 60-100% when idling. The problem is that I can't find a single process that uses that much of my CPU, and each of the processes under Task Manager's "Processes" don't add up to this amount either, but to about 5-20%. HJT, Norton Antivirus 2008 and Trend Micro's HouseCall couldn't find any spyware or virus. An sfc /scannow found no corrupt system files.

At times, the CPU usage drops to about 10%, but if I open a folder on the start menu, it takes a few seconds to show the shortcuts, and the CPU usage goes up to about 100%. Opening normal folders, running programs and so on have the same effect. In addition, it takes almost a minute for my computer to shut down (on the "Shutting Down" screen). Booting up is a lot faster, but that might be due to the 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory installed. When booting up, however, CPU usage reaches 100% after about 10 seconds in Windows, which indicates that a process (malware?) has been run?

Thanks a lot!

Hey there people, I have a computer with 32GB of RAM. No matter what I am doing, it idles at 4GB or more RAM usage. I have gone down my process list and there is nothing eating up a lot of RAM. It is set to show all processes. I don't understand why it uses so much. It's not a problem, I have memory to spare I was just wondering why.

A:Idling with 4GB of RAM usage?

4Gb of 32Gb isn't a lot! That RAM isn't actually "in use" it is on standby ready to be used at a moment's notice.

Lucky man. You get at least some use from your RAM that you paid with your hard earned money (I assume). There is nothing to worry about. Win7 has an excellent RAM management.

Everyone else with an 8800 GT says that they idle around 40c-45c; none of the people I read of specified their fan speeds.

When I first got the card, it would idle at 43c with the fan running 100%; now it Idles at 49c with the fan @ 100%, and 57c on "automatic". I just finished dusting the card (and the whole case) with a tech vac, but that had no effect on my gpu's temperature (however the cpu cooled 2c).

-The card is and has always been OC'd to 648/956.
-I always run my fan at 100%

I'm not sure what my load temps are; I'll go play crysis for a little and post them.

Any ideas of why I'm idling higher?

Hey there,

Normally im used to leaving the PC on when going out etc.
But i've completely reinstalled my PC 3 days ago, and now everytime when i leave the PC for a couple of hours,
i get back and the PC got a BSOD and rebooted.

I've attached the dump files.

Thanks in advance!

A:BSOD after idling for a while

Why did you decide to completely reinstall your PC?

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

I'm guessing that this is hardware/compatibility issues. Please start by running these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Also, please run Driver Verifier (according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings ) in case this is a software issue.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

So my power went out the other day for about 10 minutes, with my computer on. I turn it back on and its running really slow, like the start menu takes about a minute to open up and when i try to get on the internet it crashes, then takes about 3 or so minutes to open the page.
I have a compaq desktop computer running windows xp. If you need more info on my computer let me know.
I opened task manager, and go to processes, and find there is a processes called SYSTEM that is making my computer run at 99-100% cpu usage. i looked up what SYSTEM is and its a normal processes, its what they call a "kernal". So im thinking there is a bad driver or something on my computer. I downloaded a program called Glary Utilities, and used it to analyze my drives, and found that the D: drive is using an abnormal amount of resources. So im thinking its something to do with the D: drive, whatever that is, I thought the only drives I had were C and the CD drive.
Im no computer expert, so before i did anything stupid i figured i would ask someone who actually knew what they were talking about.
I did already restore my computer to factory settings, because i didnt have anything important on it, but it didnt do a thing. I ran a bunch of virus scans and found some viruses but i really dont think that had anything to do with it because the problem happened right after a power outage.

A:CPU usage idling at 99-100%

When the power went out it could have fried part of your ram. open the run box and type    mdsched.exe     Run the test. If no errors are found then check your hard drive with CrystalDiskInfo http://www.snapfiles.com/get/cdiskinfo.html If no problems are found there then open an elevated Command Prompt and type    sfc /scannow    and let that test run.

So lately my laptop has been producing a lot of heat while not doing much work. This is probably because of a clogged air vent, but it also led me to believe the CPU was doing unnecessary work. What I found out via task manager is that explorer.exe is constantly idling around 20% CPU load. What I tried is ending and restarting the explorer.exe from the task manager
and deleting the content in the temp folders in C:/windows/temp and appdata/local/temp, then rebooting the computer. These two fixes are what I found most through google but they did not help.
I found out more people have had this problem and many of them were solved by this and other fora through DDS, FRST analysis and the like, so that is why I am posting in this particular forum. If you think I posted this wrong, please tell me.
Closing down explorer.exe causes a significant temperature drop in my CPU (from 75C to 60C). Also wmiprvse.exe occasionally pops up and uses around the same CPU percentage as explorer.exe, and killing it in task manager does nothing as it pops right back up (this may be entirely unrelated to the explorer.exe problem, but I thought I should let you know)
Many thanks in advance and if you need more info, please let me know.

Hello all, I come here after some help to solve the problem of my recurring BSODs, I have had 18 of them (well 18 minidumps are logged) since the 29th of August.

At first I came to think it was due to my PSU not giving off enough power when I leave my computer on overnight - even though it ran fine on WinXP so I turned off all powersaving settings yet it still occurs, and now it is happening while I am using it (just surfing the net or gaming).

My spec is listed - Everything is default, bar the GPU which came factory overclocked. The cpu sits at 30c - 35c and upto 50c when gaming, not sure about the GPU.

Here is the latest minydump and error (this morning)

A:BSOD - While idling and using

There's a possibility that the machine has been pwned by malware, although I should emphasise that's just a wild stab in the dark.

The crash has something to do with a driver called gdrv.sys, except the one on your machine doesn't look quite like it should, hence the pwnage theory, but that might just be a side-effect of the way that data has been committed to the minidump at the time of the crash.

Does that box have a Gigabyte motherboard? If so, you might want to make sure the BIOS and the motherboard drivers are all up-to-date. If not, I suggest panicking and running every anti-malware scan you can find.

Has anyone actually fixed that in a decent way that constantly works? I have seen there is multiple threads with even older thinkpadshttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T480-throttling-and-high-CPU-temps/td-p/...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T480-TDP-throttle/td-p/4064211funny when you go through the thread and all you see is "yeah im having the same problem", "#metoo" etc. and it just looks PATHETIC. This company may have got my money this time, but when the time for a change comes, I will not even look at their useless products. Ive had my T580 for like 2 weeks and the last week was a constant fight with gpu(MX150) getting up to 70 degrees, then throttling and slowing the whole thing down. I have studied ThrottleStop inside and out, studied BIOS like an engineer enabling/disabling Intel speedstep, power management options etc., spent hours on reinstalling windows after removing Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework with no real fix, underclocking, overclocking, undervolting WHAT THE...?! Should all that be even necessary when I want to play a game on a laptop for 1 hour? Even if it is not a gaming laptop, there should be an adequate cooling system that actually allows you to do that at a certain performance. The laptop cost like $2k and I have a feeling I could have bought a yoga 310 for $200 if I wanted something with the same performance.Reddit is full of people having the same issues with ... Hello,I'm interested in buying a T580 thinkpad and got some questions: 1. does the 4K display consumes more battery power than the FHD display? 2. for those customers with 4k display - are you satisfied with that choice? (are the fonts readable)2. in reality, how long does the battery last with standard use? (with all types of rear batteries)?3. how is your overall impression of this model? Thanks, Johnny

Hi everyone, basically I have the same problem as previously mentioned in other threads, but the solution providied, isn?t applicable for my case. The fan turns on if  you?re only webbrowsing or doing some editing work in word, which obviously shouldn?t be the case.I run Win10 Pro. All updates and drivers seem up to date, at least Win10 says so.How do I check if it?s really the case? BIOS is 1.09. Setting the battery plan doesn?t have an effect. Coming from a reddit post, ist was suggested, that I should ask @someotherguy if a solution he proposed for other models, also works for T580. Everything is explained in the following reddit  thread. http://reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/8f24ki/t580_fan_turning_on_cpu_10/dy1cw9u Help would be greatly appreciated. Please note, that I am not as tech?savvy as you are, so please keep it in mind, if you?re answering(read: talk to me like i?m an idiot ) ?

I'm about to order a T580 today and I see there is a choice of "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear". Does anyone own the 48Wh battery for the T580 (or T570) so that they can confirm if the 48Wh batter sticks out at all? I want a battery that does not raise the laptop. Also where can I buy a second (spare) battery that is exactly the same as the "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear"? Thanks in advance. Hi, i have poured all of my summer money into a brand new T580.I belived i was getting superior build quality and keyboard. Well at least one of these is true. But it came with its share of problems The plastic only chasis bends even when picking the notebook up -> the screen is getting scratched by the keyboard. The static crackling sounds with ultrasound circuit whining  in Windows resolved only by disabling TurboBoost and underclocking aka Intel SpeedStepInability to wake up from the deeper sleep/suspend. I have dualboot and waking up after suspending from Windows gets me into Linux every time. Pressing F12 does nothing. And then after i restart into Windows my mouse in the Thunderbolt port stops working. So i got to reboot a second time. The motherboard has no daughterboards, wrecking one port means replacing the whole motherboard or resoldering the portNitpickingFirmware takes 6-7 secs to do its thing on every boot.Non existant Linux fingerprint drivers .Keyboard does not remember it's backlight settings between reboots. The top plastic is uncleanable. It becomes hydrophobic where you touch it frequently. If something has a solution please let me know. I am more than happy to try it.Sending the notebook for repair would likely solve nothing.I just expected the machine to live up to the legacy it has. There is so many cheaper convertibles and gaming laptops i did not buy just to have this one and so far, i don't feel like it was worth it.So ple...
