Q: problems with hp finding hard disk

i have an hp pavilion a1560n. i am trying to install win xp pro sp2. just put a new hard drive in but windows installer will not recignize the drive. i have tryed to install 3rd party raid and it doesnt work does anyone have any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: problems with hp finding hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

take the motherboard out of the computer with the hard drive power supply and RAM. See if it recreates the issue outside the box. Sounds like bad ground or bad mobo if this really is an intermittent issue.

I am using a usb bootable drive to install a fresh copy of Windows 7. I have used hade USB copy of Windows for some time now so I know that it works.
My issue is at the moment is once the install starts and makes it to the screen that ask you which drive you would like to install windows on it cannot locate any drive.
I says something similar to no useable drive or something similar. (I do not have the screen in front of me) The list is empty. You have the options of opening a command prompt, advanced repair options, or load drivers. From what I see I need to
create a new drive but cannot figure out how or if I'm trying to do something I don't need to do.
Any help walking me threw this Please.

P.S.   The hard drive I am using was at one point used in a different computer and was wiped clean

Can anyone please help me with this?

My problem is that I have just bought a new system running vista after the old one died following a motherboard problem (it refused to boot). I have salvaged the old hard disk which ran XP and it appears to be sound and I have put it in an external enclosure connected to the new computer. I want to retrieve/access old mail folders created in MS Outlook 2003 on the old hard disk but cannot seem to locate them anywhere.

Any suggestions as to how I can get to and open them please?

A:Finding and transferring Outlook Personal Folders from an Old Hard Disk

Your old outlook.pst file should be located here: Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Copy it over to your new PC. In Outlook, do File > Open > Outlook Data File

Am reinstalling Windows Vista after a virus infected my PC. I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. There are no issues with the hard disk and this happened once before but I can't remember how I solved this.

My problem is the Vista installer not recognising my hard disk so I can install Vista. I have an Alienware pc with hitachi deskstar hard disk and asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard.

I have to reinstall as a virus has caused my windows explorer to malfunction and it also installed a trojan which stole my key.

I have tried a couple of ASUS raid drivers via a usb hard disk with no luck. We can't find any appropriate hitachi drivers.

I think this is related to the hard disk controller? Any ideas?

Nah. Reset BIOS to default settings and then try booting from the DVD again. If it doesn't work, come back and let us know.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

Hi, i have a customers computer Gateway SX2110 it used to have windows 8 and my customer wanted to get windows 7, so i proceeded as usuall but started to have problems with the boot.So I took the hdd, put it in another PC and installed windows 7 on that. I deleted all three partitions that the hdd had on it, OEM, System Resever, and Power Reset Button (something like that, it was the Recovery partition) because it would not let me install windows 7 on any of the partitions since they were all linked together.

So installed Windows 7 on it, and popped it back on the other PC.

Lo and behold, It would not boot. I keep getting the error message " Error: No Boot Disk Has Been Detected Or The Disk Has Failed".

I checked the cables, they were working fine. I switched sata ports, no avail. I plugged the HDD back on to the other pc and it was working fine again.

I decided it was probably Windows 7 incompatible, so I took a win 8 image and installed it back on to the HDD using the working pc then popped the hd back into the Gateway. But it still gave me the error message.

I also tried completely formatting the drive and installing it blank see if it would at least say something else, but same error message.

At this point Im thinking that installing win 7 might have deleted something that the BIOS needed in order to boot properly. Everything is in perfect working condition hardware wise (except maybe the WAN mini port which started all of this.)

I dont think this happened on windows xp.

Anyone encoutered this problem? A setting in vista? or any other advice?

When you plugged in the new drive did you go into the BIOS and let it get identified, I know from the Dell GX150 that it doesn't recognise new drives off the bat, I had to go and set the BIOS to Auto for the Primary Master as it was set to a user config.

It may also be true that the replacement drive is set as a slave and again I think Dell set any unused drive slots to OFF in the BIOS, so check the jumpers and check the BIOS is set to Auto for all the IDED channels.

A:Hard Disk Problems

Try restarting the computer while pressing del to get into the bios. From there, try to autodetect the drive. Also, check the boot sequence as he may have left a floppy in the floppy drive. Next step if that doesn't work is to try replacing the jumpers on the hard drive, sometimes corrosion on the jumpers will keep them from running correctly.

Three potentially related problems, all having begun recently. 1) When I attempt to copy or backup files to a Maxtor external hard drive (USB 2), it stops at about 20 gb with a "Unable to complete request because of I/O device error". Happens with various software packages. 2) A HP scanner (also USB 2) will scan one picture and then refuse to scan a second -- just freezes at the warming up lamp phase. 3) My DVD writer is sometimes unreliable -- will say no media present when a DVD is inserted, and sometimes copy problems. No problem with CDs on same drive. Various diagnostic programs show no problems with USB ports.

The computer is a Dell 8250 with 512 mb running Windows XP Pro. A printer and slide scanner work fine on USB ports. I have done all the testing of ports, testing devices in various ports alone and in various combinations. Also everything working fine according to Device Manager and other diagnostic packages.

The Maxtor people (who have been very helpful) cannot find a problem. At the insistence of Dell I have reinstalled all USB drivers, relevant software drivers, etc. and have updated BIOS, chip set and USB drivers. In testing the internal hard drive it failed the write test by completing about 20% and then resetting. Norton and Fix-It both show the drive to be fine generally and with surface scan. No other problems of which I'm aware with the drive.

Dell insists that the problem is a defective internal hard drive and wants to replace it (unde... Read more

A:Hard disk problems?

The easiest way to figure it out ( if it's hardware or software ) would be to take the Maxtor drive to a good working computer and try it. If it works then you'll know it's a windows problem. If it doesn't, then have Dell send you a new one.
One quick question though. You mention reinstalling drivers,etc..etc. Did you reinstall Service Pack 1 as well? "Stock" XP doesn't work well with USB 2.0 , that's why i was wondering. You mention about a printer and a slide scanner are those USB 2.0 ( i got this feeling that those are USB 1 )

i recently bought an LG laptop (1GB RAM on Vista Home Premium). It worked perfectly in the first couple of days but then i started to see random blue screen ( i think it is BSOD) on which the comp shows a blue screen dumping some thing and then restarts. "Windows was temporary unable to read your harddrive. This problem is general in nature and we are unable to determine the specific cause of the problem from the problem report. In most cases this problem us temporary and can be ignored".

IBM Deskstars, Do they ever work right??

one HD (40g) with 2 partitions, (i) 82% 32g NTFS & (ii) 18% 8g Fat32

The NTFS partition has stopped working but Fat 32 works fine.
If I boot up an NTFS OS system (w2k or XP) when the drive is attached, the OS fails to boot. It gets about half way then the HD gives a er, er, er sounding noice.

If I boot up W98 then it works fine but no access to ntfs of course.

I can fdisk and delete the NTFS partition (I had this problem before and and set the partition up again) but this is a final solution as at least 20g of info I have no back up for.

Any ideas to how I can recover the Data??

A:Hard disk problems

It's a bad sector most likely. Just run a surface test. If the OS can't boot even in safe mode, then you have to take the HD to someone elses computer to run disk check and/or copy off the data you want.

Do the "drive erase" thingy in the IBM feature tool for a better solution.

I have a wierd problem. I run Win 8 prof. I have 2 internal HDD's. Plus 3 external HDD's. The 2 internal disks are each 1TB the external disks are 2 tb and 1 2tb.

There are 2 separate problems. In device Manager I show all the hard drives.
However. In File Manager only 1 internal HDD shows. I have tried to correct the problem in Disk Management and though the second drive show is as unallocated (it has a lot of data on it) I cannot issue a drive letter to it and if I persist the system crashes by freezing. That's one problem.

The secon problem is that the system will not boot if the 3 external drives a on so I keep the off electrically until the full boot is complete. I can live with this if I have to and have for a while although I would like a cure for this problem also but the 1st problem is more critical and in need for help.

A:Hard disk problems

You should try updating your BIOS. I've had motherboards in the past that had trouble booting when USB drives were attached, and a BIOS update fixed it.

If the drives are shown as unallocated, then that means they aren't partitioned, and there is no data on them.

Hi, I bought my PC new about 10 months ago, specs are:

AMD Athlon64 X2 4000+ Dual Core processor
Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard
2 hard disks: one 200GB one 50GB (7200rpm)
nVidia 8500GT-512MB Graphics card

The OS running is Windows XP Home Edition, anyway yesterday it was working perfectly fine (however this month it has frozen several times which had never happened before) and today I turned it on and got the message: "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER." I've restarted several times but the same thing happens. If I stick the Windows disk in it tries to re-install but I haven't done that as I';m not sure it's going to fix the problem because when I went into BIOS setup I couldn't see either of my two hard disks which is kind of weird because I don't think they could have both died at exactly the same time?
Anyhow wondering if anyone could give me some help into how to get it up and running again and as to what could be the problem because I'm pretty sure the hard disks can't be dead.

Thanks =)

What I don't understand is the AMD 756 PCI bus master dual IDE controller is working, but the others aren't. I also don't know why this just seemed to happen out of nowhere...my computer was working OK besides a problem with my CDrom, which seemed to fix itself, but after restarting the computer today, this whole problem happened. I have a new PC with an Intel Dual Core processor an ASUS motherboard and with 3 nVidia hard disks (2 of which I want as RAID drives). I am trying to install Windows on it but whenever it tries to install, it says it cannot find any hard disks yet in the DEL setup thing it says that they are connected and everything.

I have tried doing the put some HD drivers on a floppy and then pressing F6 and all that but it still can't find them.

Any help please...? Thanks.

A:SATA Hard disk problems!

Well, you are on the right track as you'll need a floppy for the F6 option for the initial install to recognize and configure your SATA controller and thus see your drives.

What we really need is the precise model number of your motherboard. Do you have a receipt or can you see it silk-screened on the motherboard itself? ASUS motherboards usually have the model-number in big, white lettering near the expansion slots or by the CPU socket.

From here, we can better instruct you on how to make a properly functioning F6 driver floppy for your SATA controller.

Alternatively, most ASUS motherboards also ship with a cd. You can try booting off that cd to see if it present a menu for making a boot floppy image.

Hi i'm new and not in any way a computer whiz. The viruses worry me. Install malwarebytes. Reboot your pc into safe mode. Run a FULL virus scan and malwarebytes scan. If you find anything, remove, and then reboot again into safe mode. Repeat until nothing is found.

You might want to run a diagnostic check on your external hard drive to see if that fall damaged it. You could check on the manufacturer's website for a diagnostic tool or you could run SeaTools from Seagate.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

If any issues are discovered it may be time to save your data and replace the hard drive.

I have some major problem with my computer. First of all I booted my computer and it said boot disk error. when I saw this I though my hard drive crashed so I tryed to use my Restore cd. After it tryed to format the hard drive the restore Cd failed. so I booted from my win 98 cd and tryed to format through that it also did not work. Then I tryed to repair the hard disk and I got a ton of errors and running scan disk did not solve the errors. I tryed booting from a floppy disk but i was unable to do that. the light just went on for a while then it blinked and shut off. I tryed using accessing the directory of the floppy but it saud general error reading disk. Then i tryed with another floppy and it said not ready reading disk. I thought this was all due to the hard drive problems so I went out and bough a new hard drive. I got the same errors as with the old hard drive. Im almost possative that all the cables are ok. Ive tryed a lot of things. PLEASE TRY TO HELP ME.
Any advice is welcome.

I saved a Word document on a floppy disk, now when I try to open the disk on my computer, I get this error message:

"A:\ is not accessible.

The system cannot read from the specified device."

To counter this, I attempted to open the document itself when opening Microsoft Word. I click on "File," scroll down to the document, and I click it. When the A:\ drive is running, soon I get this error message in Word:

"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*Use the file open dialogue box to locate the document."

I tried the second suggestion, but the "A:\ is not accessible..." error pops up. I would try the first suggestion, but I don't know how to do it.

Any suggestions? This is important because a class assignment is on the disk.

A:Hard Disk drive (A:\) problems

could be a couple things.

1. the floppy disk is corrupt and your out of luck.
2. the floppy drive is experiencing problems, try to access the disk on another computer, if you cannot open it on another computer I am afraid the disk is shot.

I have windows xp. Everytime l start up l get a page telling me windows has to check the consistency of one of my disks. It takes ages to check so now l cancel it.

I don't know where to look to tell you what drive i've got. I've got a Time AMD Athlon 1800+ machine and never had any problems before.

I am cancelling the disk check and doing everything with no problems (as of yet) but would like to get it sorted.

Any ideas?

It sounds like your hard drive is starting to go bad. I suggest you visit the manufactures of your hard drives web site and download their diagnostic tests for your hard drive. You can usually look at the label on the drive itself to see what kind of drive it is.

Ok I have three External hard drives, The External Cases are all the same make and model. Now the power cord for one is them gives off a noise which i now isn't good, So i try not to use that hard drive that often.

Anyway i turned it off last week cause i didn't need it, then this week tried to access it and the thing isn't being detected by windows. It's an older smalled Harddrive.

Western Digtail 120 gig Drive

I run both window vista and xp on my computer and have tried logging into both and nothing happens. i have a second computer and I plugged the drive into there, with no results it didn't detect the drive at all.

Anyone have ideas cause i really want the stuff off there.

Have you looked in Disk Management (Right click on My Computer and choose Manage)? Does it show up there, but is not being assigned a drive letter?

If it didn't work in 2 setups, the drive might be dead. If you really need the data you can send it off to a recovery place, but it will be expensive, and not guaranteed.

I have an old 12.7 GB hard disk hooked up as secondary slave. A cd burner is on secondary master. The drive is formatted as FAT32. I am running XP home edition with the restore option disabled.

Here is the problem:

In DOS (from a bootdisk), the files appear and everything is normal. (can read and write to the drive).

In XP. The drive is unreadable, and gives the following message:

"this drive is not formatted, do you want to format this drive?"

How can I get XP to read this drive? It was working before, but all of a sudden just quit. I am assuming that since it is readable in DOS, then something is screwey with XP.

This drive is full of all of my ripped audio cds. It took me forever to rip them, I would really hate to see all my hard work go down the drain. Anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this thing?

Try the thing with another computer or at least another operating system (a Live CD?).

Take the hard drive out of the enclosure and see if it works when connected directly inside a computer.

ZAR lets you restore 4 folders at a time for free I believe, so you can throw that at the disk when everthing else fails.

Next time, make backups of your important stuff

You may have knocked the video card loose when replacing the HDD.
Make sure it's firmly in the slot.

If the PC has a built-in video chip, then make sure all the cables and memory are firmly plugged in.

When you turn it on, does the PC sound like it's turning on? (fans spinning, beeps, etc.)

My PC is out of disk space. I used SequoiaView to take a look at the files on my hard drive. Much to my surprise 2/3 of my disk is eaten up by outlook.pst files. They are located on c:\programfiles\support.com/backup/ou/outlook.pst/xxxxxxx_xxxxxxx_xxxxxxx
What are these and do I need them? Please help me reclaim my hard drive.

I recently deleted the 3 partitions on my hard disk, and created three new ones and reinstalled windows. Now anything I download from the internet is corrupt, .exe s dont work, zip files dont extract. No problem with the isp because my other computer works fine with the downloaded files from the internet. When I copy files from my other computer on a usb stick and run them from the usb stick on my main computer then it runs fine, but when i copy the files on the hard disk of my troubled computer then again it says its corrupt.

How I can solve this problem without doing the partition again and will that solve my problem any way.

I'd suggest that you run a diagnostic on the hard drive...and check the network connection settings for the two systems. If both are using the same device for Internet access and one works fine, while the other does not...maybe the settings are different.Personally, I know of nothing that consistently causes corrupt downloads...but I did find this link where someone has a theory. From http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index...livion_Mods_FAQ , click on 3d question.[edit] How do I avoid corrupt downloads? Q. I keep getting corrupt or incomplete downloads. Why can't I download this? Can you host it somewhere else? Quick tips for a successful download: Check free drive space. Disable firewall. Use a Download Manager There are quite a few very large mods for Oblivion, and a lot of players seem to have trouble downloading them. If you're having trouble downloading a large mod file, especially when the download consistently dies just before finishing, chances are that it's your firewall causing the problem. Temporarily disable the firewall, download the file, then re-enable the firewall. You should also check to make sure you have enough free space on your boot drive (where the temp file is kept during the download) and wherever you're saving the file. Using a Download Manager is also a very good idea, and may be critical for some really huge mods. (The following is adapted from Using a Download Manager by Monica21.) With very large mods, it's a good idea... Read more
