Audio device disappears on startup.

Q: Audio device disappears on startup.

Hello there!  I have a Radeon 6850 video card and I use the HDMI Audio as my sound output.  Sometimes however, it disappears on startup and I have to use the executable and reinstall it.  I don't know what causes this.  Anyone out here have an idea? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Audio device disappears on startup.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Audio device disappears on startup.

The very first thing you need to do is to update your ATI driver. First go to control panel and uninstall ATI drivers completely. You can find the latest ATI driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Report back if the problem still continues after updating drivers.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

A:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

Hi, i just recently got my convertible laptop. I have found ou that the audio doesn't work due to there being no audio output device installed, and after researching, I found out that there was a problem with the the Intel SST Audio Device. The device status stated:  "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)There are no compatible drivers for this device. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver." I tried updating the driver but the computer could not find any drivers for the device.  Can anybody fix this for me please? Thank You.

Hi @JD_gin?,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion x2 Notebook and issues with sound drivers not installed correctly. In the Device Manager, right-click on Double-click on Sound, video, and game controllers and select all that are listed and uninstall the Driver Software. Here is the download to the Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driversp69248.exe. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed! You could also try in the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adaptors to expand that categoryRight-click on Graphics and select Update Driver Software if more than 1 Graphics adapter do 1 at a time.Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driverAfter the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. Please let me know how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below!.Thanks.

I'm using my Asus P6T Deluxe v2 motherboard on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. In device manager for my on-board ethernet controller (Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E) I've unmarked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". But when I restart my computer this option is marked again. Asus driver is installed.

Does anybody know why?

A:Network device configuration disappears

Do you have that option ticked in a seperate Power Plan, so that it's not enabled on boot? I.E. have it marked in the Power Saving plan but not the normal Balanced plan, or the plan for running off battery power if you're in a laptop (which wouldn't be applicable in a desktop but sometimes shows up for the hell of it for some reason).

I'm using Windows 7 and have been having some annoying issues using headphones. They aren't USB headphones, just ones that go into the headphones/speakers port. First, I have to disable the speakers sound device for the headphones to work, which is annoying, but something I can live with. But when I unplug the headphones, the headphones sound device will disappear, and plugging them back in will not always make it show up again. I can restart with them plugged in, and it will show up, but obviously this is annoying, and I can't figure out how to get it to just show up. Anyone know anything about this?

Hello all,
I have a Crucial 64gb SSD labeled as the D: drive. It is not the primary drive. IT keeps disappearing from windows. When it does I can not see it in device manager or disk management.

So I disconnected and reconnected it to a different port on the motherboard and restarted the computer and It showed up again and worked fine.

While I was backing up my Lightroom catalog to that drive, my computer froze and D: was gone again. So I connected it to a different port, restarted the computer and now it is showing up again. I fear it is only a matter of time before this happens again.
I tried CrystalDiskInfo and the drive doesn't show up there.

It has failed again, this time I wasn't using the drive for anything. Windows Explorer stopped working so I restarted the computer and the drive is not showing in explorer, device manager, or disk management.

A:SSD disappears from Device manager and Disk management

It sounds like the drive maybe faulty. Crucial do have an SSD Drive Utility which will test it for you. - Sorry, I cant send you a link as the site is down for maintenance atm.

I'd also check to see what PSU you have installed. It maybe underpowered for the amount of devices you have in your PC. However this is uncommon.

I have pretty much confirmed the following problem isn't malware (or at least that I've cleaned my system of intact malware) using the help of a moderator on the malwarebytes forum and combofix, although I *DID* discover and clean infections by Alureon A and a backdoor trojan and a couple other things prior to obtaining his help.My XP SP3 computer's E:\ drive (DVDRW) usually (though not always) doesn't show up in My Computer NOR in Device Manager. There isn't even a CD/DVD section in Device Manager when this happens. However, all my IDE controllers appear TWICE in Device Manager. If I uninstall (both copies of) the secondary IDE channel and/or standard dual channel PCI IDE controller (I'm not sure which, actually -- I've never just done one) and do a rescan, the drive usually THEN shows up (both in Device Manager and in My Computer. However, if I click on the newly revealed drive in device manager or in my computer -- not always right away, but if not then soon after it appears -- my computer almost always crashes to a beige colored screen with a weird pattern (sometimes all over the screen, sometimes just in a small area) composed of tiny dots and dashes. It looks like old school computer game terrain graphics or something (when it's the "all over the screen" version, that is). Sometimes the pattern is just a vertical dot-and-dash line on an otherwise blank beige screen. After these crashes, my notebook generally fails to... Read more

Weird problem here. I pulled a DVD Rom from one Gateway and put it in this Gateway (P4 1.4, 768mb, XP home). Now I know it worked a few weeks ago because I ripped a bunch of my CDs right before Christmas. Well I just went to rip a new one and here's what happens: On boot up everything is fine. I look in My Computer and the DVD Drive (F Drive) is there. In System Hardware it's listed, no errors. But as soon as I put an audio CD in it starts to read it and disappears from My Computer and System. I have to reboot to get it to come back. It'll read data CDs fine, just no audio.

In my system log the error says: "The device 'COMPAQ DVD-ROM GD-8000' (IDE\CdRomCOMPAQ_DVD-ROM_GD-8000__________________0011____\5&2ba5797f&1&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."

Any ideas?

I have a blutooth speaker that I use with my laptop. When paired, the OS (Win 8.1) identifies it as headphones and uses the headphones icon. I don't like that; I want to give it my custopm name and use my custom made icon for this device.

When I change name and icon, all works as supposed as long as the device is not unpaired. But since I sometimes need to pair the device with my telephone, I have to re-pair it when using it afterwards with the computer. And then all my customizations are gone.

How can I get the OS to remember my device and apply the nice icon and name I have prepared for it?

Double post, since this is a vista problem too.

I am trying to run a piece of legacy hardware (a sidewinder precision 2, the one that is purely USB, no game ports) on a Vista install.

Though warned it might not work, I was surprised when I plugged it in that it worked flawlessly as a plug and play device; I installed no extra software or drivers. I happily chugged around in a game for a while, then quit. A little later, I tried again and after a short investigation realized that Vista did not recognize the device was connected. I tried the other port on the front of my computer, nothing. Then I tried the hub on my keyboard. Worked like a charm, for a few hours. On a restart, it no longer sees it there; nothing changes in system properties when I unplug/plug it in anywhere, and it is obviously no longer listed in game devices in control panel as it was before.

There is no noise on a hardware disconnect after Vista loses track of the joystick, but neither is there a disconnect sound at the time it loses track (as far as I've heard).

I've run out of ports! Any ideas as to why Vista would throw this kind of fit over a device?

Point: I also deleted entries relating to sidewinder in the registry when I ran out of ideas, deleting everything below joystick where a sidewinder entry occurred. No luck so far.

Problem: The Wild Tangent Error Pop-up was solved on my desktop computer by using:

START ---- RUN---type in msconfig-----then going to START-UP and unchecking the Wild Tangent File...... But.....

Our Laptop has the same problem, which is an XP also.....we tried the above solution. The lap top has SPY Bot, and Ad Ware removal like my desktop computer, but now we have a new problem before we solve the Wild Tangent problem.

And that is.......When we go to click the Start-up Tab in the System Configuration Ultilty which brings us to all the files on Start-up, we do see all the files but, the page disappears after about 5 seconds, it acts like it is timing out.

This quick disappearing act does not give us a chance to find the file and unclick the Wild Tangent file to solve our problem.

How do we fix the Start-up so it will last more than 5 seconds?

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Guys,

I need some expert help here. I was using the WRT600N for years without problem. I usually have 10+ APs around me. But suddenly, two days ago, the whole wireless network was down.

I cannot find my SSID (even if I put the laptop right on the top of router), nor others. It is just like my router doesnt exist. All SSIDs but one(not mine) disappear from the list. I tried my Laptop, my psp and my PS3. None of them has SSID shown. Then I found that only if I switched to channels 11, that my own SSID appears again. However, even though it shows stronge signal now, I cannot connect to it wirelessly. the client card Cannot obtain IP.

The wired function is normal so my router should be ok. In the meantime, I noticed that my wireless mouse freezing from time to time and my bluetooth headset also constantly lost connection to my phone. Another obersvation is that if I move just 30 feet away from my apartment, the orginal 10+ SSID magically appears.

The interference must be a small range but so strong!!.

My question is: What kind of device can sent out such strong signal that can block my router, my wireless mouse, and even bluetooth? Is it possible that someone installed a wifi blocking device nearby?

Is there any way (hardware/software) I can find the source and block it?

Thanks in advance

I recently upgraded from a XPS 400 to a refurbished XPS 420 Vista Home Premium 32. I moved my extra internal hard drive, Nvidia 8600GT PCI Express card, and my Hauppauge HVR 1800 tv tuner over the the XPS 420. Everything went smooth, my Nvidia card, internal hard drive, and tv card all works. My only problem is when I resume from sleep mode my Hauppauge HVR 1800 tv tuner card disappears from my device manager. When I restart the system tries to shut down, but gets stuck on the shut down screen. So I end up having to press and hold the power button to get the computer to restart. This is my Hauppauge card:

Is the card malfunctioning or is the motherboard malfunctioning?

The card worked flawlessly in my XPS 400 running vista home premium 32. It also works fine in the XPS 420 until I resume from sleep...

Once I restart the tuner card is found and functional. I've tried removing and reseating the card several times, I thought it might be a poor connection, but still no luck. Once the computer comes out of sleep the card is missing again in the device manager and media center says no tuner detected.

Should I replace the motherboard or replace the card? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

New kid here, who posted this first in the windows 8 forum, but probably should've put it here.  Oops.
Pulled my graphics card as a test because it may have been causing problems, but that isn't for this post.  My problem is a "disappearing" intel hdmi audio driver.  My monitor is connected with HDMI, so once I pulled the graphics card I installed the "Intel Display Audio HDMI1" driver.  Worked fine, EXCEPT every time the computer sleeps the driver disappears and I must reinstall.  I've now set the computer not to sleep.  Win 8.1 64 bit, I7, Intel 4000 onboard graphics.  Thanks, Mike

A:intel hdmi audio driver disappears

Update: The driver disappears whether it's the monitor that sleeps or the computer.  In both cases, as should be, get a message "no hdmi input", then the screen goes dark.  In both cases, individually tested, when I wake up either the monitor or the computer, the audio symbol indicates having audio capability, but very quickly goes "red x" and upon opening the sound driver window, the intel hdmi audio driver is missing.
Also, at that point when I run the audio troubleshooter, it indicates the speakers are not plugged in, although I haven't touched anything since verifying, after reinstalling the driver, that the audio is functioning.

Just recently i scanned my computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and found a trojan "DC3_FEXEC", i removed and rebooted my computer, i opened the task manager and found a process named 'Test.exe' and he disappeared very quickly. I ran ADware cleaner, Combofix (probably a mistake), Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and it didn't found anything. But everytime i reboot and open the task manager it's there, but it disappears so fast that i can't click on it.
This viruses are in my new Hard Drive that a friend gave me, i formatted both partitions except the one that said ''System Reserved''.
If anyone could help i would be very grateful. Sorry if it's confusing, english is not my native language.
Thanks in advance!
Hey, i solved (i hope), apparently it was something from spybot, i ran in safe mode and used the ''autoruns'' application and the description it said ''test.exe - Makes sure Spybot 2 is there on Windows 10.''
I deleted it and now it's gone. I tried removing the topic but i don't think i can. Sorry if i wasted anyone's time.

A:Test.exe process on startup and then disappears quickly

Hi there,Just to drop by a piece of advice - Spybot Search & Destroy is no longer recommended as its performance is very poor, and the TeaTimer function interferes with malware removal. Two better alternatives for anti-malware software are Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Both have excellent track records and offer real time protection if upgraded to paid version, and can be used alongside existing antivirus software.

A:A windows pops up at startup on the taskbar then disappears

Greetings, and welcome to TSF.

Your log apprears clean, so we'll need to look a little deeper.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago and the Quick Access menu was working normally. A few months back however, all of the pinned items disappeared and I cannot pin anything to the quick access menu either. I've gone through all the posts and different solutions I can find and all I have been able to do is temporarily fix the problem by deleting the "5f7b5f1e01b83767.automaticDestinations-ms" file in the C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations folder.

Deleting this file does bring back the quick access folders that I had pinned before this problem started to happen, but every time I restart my computer, the quick access menu is again empty and nothing can be pinned to it.

I have googled and tried all of the different solutions that I can find so any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

One thing worth checking - are the two boxes ticked in the Privacy settings of Folder Options? Select Options on the View ribbon of File Explorer.

Before I even get a chance to see what it says or refers to. Anyone ever heard of this and or what it could be an indication of?

A:Solved: Dialog box appears then disappears on startup

You don't give us a lot to go on SG. Do you see an outline of the box? Is it about 6"x4"? Do you run Zone Alarm?
ANY more info would be good.

Hi there,
I've been having a hard time with my secondary hard drive showing up when I go into the "computer" option under my start menu. It does appear under Device Manager though.
I've reseated my cables numerous times, purchased and used new Sata cables, and I'm also running a new motherboard. I've also changed and disabled all my sleep options already.
I recently switched to using a Primary SSD for my programs to be installed on but ever since switching over to my SSD my HD no longer appears and I can't save anything to it.
Any advice? Thanks.

A:Secondary Hard Drive Disappears in 'Computer' Shows in Device Manager

You seem to need to assign the drive a path. Do this:
1. Open the windows search bar by pressing the windows logo in the bottom left corner of your screen
2. Search disk
3. Find the option labeled Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions
4. Select it
5. Find your hidden disk
6. Then assign your disk a path and it should appear in My Computer

Hope I helped!

I noticed that recently the little speaker icon for the Realtek HD Audio Manager (on the taskbar next to the clock) seems to completely disappear at times. One minute it's there, and then Poof! it's gone. It started a few weeks ago. I would restart the computer, and it would be back, but then later disappear. (I checked everything I could think of, enabling the notification, checking all the boxes in the control panel and in the realtek control panel, making sure it wasn't a "hidden" icon, etc.)

Now it's back, but instead of being white, it's red. I used to be able to right-click on it and the volume slider would appear and I could adjust the volume easily. Now when I right-click on the red icon, I get a list--> Sound Manager, Audio Devices, System Sound Events, etc. but no volume slider like before.

The sound itself works fine--no problem with the speakers--but I just can't figure out what has caused the problem with the icon disappearing and now re-appearing but with a red color.

Any ideas? I just want my volume slider back!

A:Realtek HD Audio Manager icon disappears/turns red???

Higekkota and welcome to Vista Forums

That is the normal Realtek system tray icon and context menu that you are describing. It is the other icon that is missing, the speaker icon. Have a look at this Tutorial to see if it can help you replace it. Notification Area - System Icons

Whenever I boot up my X395 Thinkpad, an icon briefly appears and disappears at the lower center of my screen. It's a side view of a face, with a finger held up to the lips. I'm pretty sure it's a Thinkpad icon and not a Windows or app icon.It doesn't seem to be related to audio settings or mic settings, since these have their own icons. It seems to be telling me that something is being muted, but I don't know what.Any help appreciated!.

Two problems, related in timing.

On July 1st, I made some adjustments to my startup config and such, and ever since then I've been having problems where my IE and Windows Media Player freeze for a few seconds when loading (though without interrupting data)

But most important of which is that since that time, my HP Factory Image D:\ drive has disappeared. It never served me any purpose, but it always just sat there in my Hard Disk lists on my Computer screen, and is conspicuous in its absence.

I checked my Disk Management and found that the 12 GB where the "D" drive was had become "Unallocated". Before I did something stupid, I checked to Rescan Drives, and it re-found the Factory Image! From then on, the FACTORY_IMAGE (D shows up in my Computer.

But after a few days I found that it was no longer showing on my Computer window, and realized that after restarting or shutting down my comp, it would always disappear, only to re-appear when I rescan my disks.

What's the problem? What service do I need to restore/fix to stop this from happening?

Somewhat related question: Would getting a whole new motherboard and CPU but retaining the old harddrive end these problems mentioned above or is it something to do solely with my faulty configurations?

A:Adjusted startup: HP Factory Image drive disappears after each restart

before you start spending money or mess your machine up any more--go into MSCONFIG and select the normal startup button then restart to see if problem(s) are gone

Hi all. I am trying to fix my dad's computer that has a curious problem. When the computer boots up, the network fails to load, Norton's anti-virus fails to load, the windows gui is very very sluggish (many times locking up all together when any icons are double clicked), and the shutdown/reboot options are no longer displayed under the start menu. Additionally, ctrl+alt+del fails to open a task manager. When the computer is in this state it is almost completely unresponsive to any input.I have managed to get the computer operating normally by booting into safe mode and either choosing the "load last known good configuration" option or using the system restore. (I have used both these options because neither works consistently, often requiring multiple attempts to achieve a good boot). I have discovered no particular pattern, nor been able to identify any particular restore point that works or doesn't work.My current solution has been to simply not shut down or reboot the computer after I've succeed into getting it to work, however I would like to solve the underlying problem that is causes this.I have tried numerous things, including windows updates, reloading restore points, using Spybot S&D, updating and running a virus scan, all to no avail. I have yet to use HiJack this, so I went ahead and downloaded it and ran the scan, but I could use some help deciphering the results. (Note that I currently have the computer operating normally, but that wo... Read more

Hello, the problem i have is peculiar. I tried googling it, but i had problems describing the problem, so i will try to do that here. I hope that someone will be able to help me.
Recently i decided to upgrade my CPU so i had to replace the mobo as well. After reinstalling windows 7 everything seemed to work fine for a week or so and then one morning when i started the computer i noticed that all sound was replaced by buzzing. Constant buzzing noise coming from my headphones. I thought that my headphones were broken.. so i pulled the headphones from my Z-2300 audio jack and the same sound came from my logitech speakers. I then tested the speakers on my laptop - everything worked. So the speakers nor the headphones are not the culprits. So i restarted my computer and i was so happy when i heard the windows startup sound, but soon after when i went to youtube i noticed something very weird. Some bits of a song that was playing went quiet.. so the problem persisted. As i listened to the track i noticed that the sound came back at random times for a while and then went to buzzing/static noise. The way the audio disappears is very strange, the audio starts to disappear from the left speaker and then it disappears from the right speaker and gets replaced by buzzing noise which isn't very loud.
I thought that maybe it's some kind of adobe flash problem, because moving my mouse on the music video sometimes managed to get the audio working again, but i have concluded that it... Read more

A:Solved: Problem with audio - it disappears and is replaced by buzzing noise at random

Sounds like the audio chipset is faulty/failing. You could try using a different audio port (ie: front panel, rear panel, digital optical, digital coaxial, etc.), just to rule out a port issue.

The AUDIO FADE PROBLEM is an issue with this laptop and I am wondering if it is related to the above.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS and drivers using the Dell Product Support pages.
Every other day I have to reinstall the Realtek Audio Device to get audio from streaming media.
The current Driver Version is from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Date 12/08/2016 which is what it defaults to upon reinstall.
I suspect that for whatever reason Dell has not yet come up with a fix. Has it something to do with the fact that although I bought the laptop new, it had been upgraded from Windows 8 to 10? (A fact that I only discovered later)

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver").  Has the hardware itself ac... I'm trying to fix an hp pavillion dv6704nr laptop running windows vista home premium. It has the little red x on the speaker in the lower right hand corner. The owner said it has been there for some months. I have tried downloading the current audio drivers for the computer but every time I try to install the driver, I get an error that says the device couldn't be found.

The first time i restarted the computer, after the driver installation failed, the audio came back and worked fine, until I had to restart the computer. Now I keep getting the same error and nothing i have found so far online has helped.

There are no yellow triangles in the device manager and the device list isn't showing the category for "sound, video and gaming etc." at all.

Please help. I did a search but the other threads didn't solve this problem for me.
Thanks in advance.

A:No audio device installed error and devices wont show in Device Manager

I see three different audio driver packages at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...ct=3646926#N661.You need to find the right one to install. If you install one and the system doesn't work properly...please uninstall it before trying the next one.Installing the wrong one won't do anything harmful to your system...it just won't do any good to leave it installed.Louis

I have a 5-year-old Asus z70Va laptop. The hard drive is a PATA, and the system is running XP Home SP3. The problem I am about to describe started roughly a year ago, and has re-occurred at least 5-6 times.

I will be listening to audio (off the main hdd, not the DVD drive) when the problem starts -- usually streaming audio, though it has also happened twice when Outlook was playing a wav file as part of an Outlook rule I set up to flag emails from a particular sender. Interestingly, the error has *never* occurred when I have been playing a video file with audio.

What happens is that the music will sound as if it is getting "stuck" on one note or passage. It sounds distorted. It may pass quickly, but then will happen again ten-thirty minutes later, even if I stop and later restart the audio file (or stream). Once it recurs, I end up with this message in Event Viewer (System):

Event 9: The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.

If I don't stop the audio immediately, the distorted and very discordant "stuck" audio continues, leading to a series of Event 9's before I can stop the player. But about every other time that happens, I *can't* stop the player; instead the computer freezes up (sometimes going to a BSOD), and when I restart I find that I now also have a series of bad block errors on a previously clean drive (usually 2 bad clusters).

So I end up replacing the drive, but then a month or two later the... Read more

A:Strictly Audio-Related Serious Event 9 Errors (The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0...)

The audio is just a coincidence, not a symptom.

Bad sectors are a sign of a hardware issue with the HDD. Software won't cause bad sectors on a HDD. I'd suspect a bad HDD. If you have replaced the HDD multiple times, then there is an underlying hardware issue (ie: motherboard/controller issue or power).

Also, if you have to "whack" anything, there is a hardware issue. It's typically a sign of a loose of faulty connection. Otherwise "whacking" it wouldn't do anything.
