I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hard drive error. Left long enough it might boot otherwise I would boot to a live CD and see if you can recover any data, then wipe the disk and test it before using again.

I would appreciate any assistance I could get, it seems I have an issue...Thank you so much in advance!

Computer is running slowly but seems to be processing constantly, freezing up when opening certain on-line sites. This has been occuring for a few days and I downloaded and ran TFC and Malwarebytes without any success. Run AVG free also. Tonight it froze and I powered it down at the power strip and upon restarting it went to a light blue screen and indicated the following (this is just parts of what the screen displayed)....

"File is dirty"
"Deleting index entry...listed multiple file #'s"
"CHKDSK is recovering lost files"
"Recovering orphaned file...then listed directory file #'s"
"CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors...."

I previously reported a slow (ing ) computer. In the process to find the problem I ran Chkdsk. At 22% of stage 2 it paused. Then reported' "deleting an index entry from index 0$ of file 53065. It ran again and then reported it was deleting a total of three files, something about blocked content, cookies and something else. Then it quickly finished and disappeared. What happened? What does this mean. I was thinking that something is failing. I ran (now deleted) System Mechanic 7. On one of its scans it mentioned that something on the hard drive was not right.

I deleted some programs, ran a AV scan, but the system is still slow. I noticed that when playing music it now is not as clear and has stutters a small bit.

Just ran the Chkdsk, paused at 22% but now no messages until it completed. Then it stated it was recovering two orphan files and this time ran stage 3 and checked a USN journal.

Is there something here.

So I may have a hard drive problem, a virus problem or both. Winpatrol keeps appearing to tell me that notepad and registry editor attempting to share a file association. Hope this makes sense as the computer is fast becoming a hostile object.

Thanks

I think I killed it....loaded the WD lifeguard to check the hard drive. It asked to reboot which I did and now its frozen on the startup screen. It seems to be making noises though.

Sometimes when I?m updating files that happen to reside in my user folder, the same folder that?s indexed on my Windows 7 machine, I?ll notice that the indexing engine doesn?t always pick up the last time it was actually modified. It?s kind of spotty actually, sometimes it?ll pick it up and sometimes it won?t. Why is that and is there anything I can do to improve the authenticity of my searches, kind of like an Indexing Best Practices?

A:Incorrect Index Searches

Indexing is not a quick proposition. One or two small edited files should update pretty quickly but if your editing a large, or several large files, it could take some time.
To improve your search reliability, knowledge is power. Learning the syntax language and understanding boolean searches goes a long way in making Windows work for you.

This line appears a couple times a second running down the screen, after waiting half an hour nothing has changed that line still keeps coming back...

I reboot and skip the scandisk at the beginig and it works fine, though i would like to fix this problem at the begining...

Hi, I have a SSD and a HDD. What happened today is that I changed the SATA ports my SSD and HDD were plugged into.

P67A-GD65 SATA Performance | bit-tech.net

Basically I plugged my drives into the Marvel controller on my mobo by mistake as my manual did not say which port was which. I only realised the performance difference after reading the above article (the Intel P67 ports are faster on my mobo). So i open up my pc and switch the ports they are plugged into. (i changed from sata7_8 to sata 1_2, both 6gbps)

HD Tune Pro does register some performance increase from changing the SATA ports. However, the WEI index now says my Hard Disk score is 5.9. It was before on 7.7.

I suspect it's reading the HDD as my primary hard disk? because there's no way my SSD is broken. it doesn't feel funny and HD Tune Pro sees no errors and some performance increase.

A:Windows Experience Index - Hard Drive score totally incorrect

Honestly, if the system is running fine, it isnt worth the effort it took to type in your entire post. WEI is not a benchmarking tool and shouldn't be treated as such. It is utterly and completely useless. I haven't cared about the my score the entire time Windows 7 has been out, but in Vista, I could occasionally get a different score just by refreshing the tool a few times. I'd completely ignore it.

HD Tune Pro is a better indication, and it is showing a difference, going by your post, so that's all you should worry about. I have a Gigabyte board nearly identical to yours, and considering the chipset bug, you should be using the first two ports...which you are now. They are unaffected.

I have an index.dat file in my cookies folder that opens Quicken when I open it. It opens Quicken as if I have never been there before, I use Quicken all the time.

I tried to delete/remove the dat file with "Complete Internet Cleanup" and nothing happened. It still opens Quicken. Any ideas on why it is opening Quicken and how to stop it from opening Quicken?

A:Index.dat file

the file is a database which IE needs to keep track of your cookies (even if you don't have anyone at present)...

It most likely opens up in Quicken because you've at some point associated all .dat files with Quicken (or maybe the program did it by itself)...

How to stop it from opening Quicken depends on which OS you are using... (though it's quite similar in most of MS' os')

In win2k:
Open explorer, choose tools -> folder options. Click on the "File Types" tab, and let it load.
Press the "d" button, and you'll be taken down to the first file which starts with a "d"...
Browse until you find the one which says "dat".
Select it, and click on the delete button.

It should be somthing similar in W98 and XP...

The next time you open index.dat it shouldn't open Quicken anymore...

Hope this helps...

How can I print out what the index.dat file viewer shows. I am desperate. thanks a bunch It says export to csv and then it comes up save as type csv for excel. I have excel but nothing happens....

A:index.dat file

You did not identify your OS or the application producing the index.dat (csv?? formatted) files.
If you are using WinXP or Win2K, have you accidentally latched onto one of the system index.dat files? If so, there is nothing of use to you in them and they ceratinly are not csv format.
If you have, in fact, a csv format you should be able to read it with any ascii viewer. Try notepad to test for this.

Hi Can someone Help my I have been searching everywhere and cannot come close to finding my problem.
I have Vista 64 bit and Microsoft Office 2007. My file indexes for my c drive, program I have when I view them show up like an iTunes index. What I mean is all I get is the file name and then stars on the right of the index.

The headings are the same as iTunes i.e., Artist, Name, Album, #, Genre, ratings. Right now I am looking the the Temp docks in Widows and it has those headings and an iTunes set up (my documents do the same but not all the time) I like to view everything in details but have to go to the profile because the index is in an iTunes set up and does not give me detailed information but with my Windows files it is consistent always in the iTunes index set up. Any help out there please!

A:File Index Problems

Hi gripweed,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Folder type formats are typically determined by the first file entered into that folder. I suppose audio type files were the first entered into these other folders and so they are using that format.

Here's how to change the default template for a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-explorer-folder-view-settings.html. Default behavior is to select the template based on the first type of file placed in the folder (it has to choose something). Vista sets the Explorer window view settings and folder type template according to what folder types are in the window. This will show you how to reset the Windows Explorer folder view settings, turn off Automatic Folder Type Discovery and increase the folder view cache to have Vista remember the view settings, folder type template, size, or position of a specific window for when it was last closed at the specific path location.

Here's another article on how to change the Windows Explorer columns and sort order in Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/108665-column-customize.html. This will show you how to add, remove, move, change the width, and change the sort order of Windows Explorer columns to how you want them.
I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hi,

I just ran a virus scan, and a file was quarantined. I found the file in the quarantine area, and deleted it. It was something like Index[1]... I'm wondering if this was a necessary file? Or how to find out if it was?

When I restarted the OS, some of the deleted favourites had re-appeared in the favourites menu--if that has any relation.

If it was necessary, how can it be restored?

Thanks.

I apologize for "shouting" my frustration but I've wasted so much time trying to find answers to the below questions for Windows 10 and all I ever find is everything else but 10 and from before 10 was even released.

I have a Surface Pro3 running Windows 10 with Office 2016.

So. I wake up one morning, come to work and my Index is wiped out and I can't search emails or anything else on my computer. I use this feature in my emails CONSTANTLY so I fought with that for two weeks and finally upgraded from Office 2010 to 2016 hoping new 'digs' would solve my problem. It did not. However, going to "conversations" in outlook and rebuilding the Index had me back up and searching happily until ...

YUP. MS upgraded Windows 1o about two weeks ago and it wiped out my Index. Again. Because my index includes 734,000 entries it took a week to get it to finally index everything again because I have to leave the computer running and set up a special power setting to keep it from hybernating/sleeping/shutting down, etc. So it finished Monday and I had two days of blissful searching.

Yesterday I logged in and my index was deleted and it was re-indexing and I was at 4,000 entries.

Questions:
1. Why did Windows (or Office) delete and/or re-initial my index?
2. Where is the Index File in Windows 10 (I really don't care about XP, Vista, 7 or 8!)?
3. Is it possible to save a copy of that file once I find it so WHEN MS or Windows eats it again I can re... Read more

Hello jrshane, Welcome to TSF!

However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck with it.

Read more

Hello and welcome to TSF.

This may take several rounds to clean. So, please stay with us until "all clear" is given even if the symptoms dissappear.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
