Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

Q: Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

Hi, Ive been having a problem getting task manager to run at all. On a fresh reboot, if I use the ctrl alt del function the according screen will come up like normal, and I will click on task manager. It bring me back to my desktop and nothing pops up.
Its not running in my task bar or anything. Then if I try to use the ctrl alt del function again, nothing happens. Ive tried running task manager straight from the start menu, but then I get an error saying that the version of that file is not compatible with
the version of windows I am running, which is 64 bit W7. It just started happening on my system a few days ago and I have changed nothing the past few days. I have tried to do a system restore, but to my idiocy, I did not know I needed to manually create restore
points. So I can only restore to yesterday which would fix nothing. I have run antivirus and anti spyware programs and they have shown no problems and my hard drive only has a 1% disk fragmentation. Is there a way to uninstall and re download a 64 bit compatible
version of the windows 7 task manager? Or is there a separate reason why it is not working? Thankyou

Preferred Solution: Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

Also try it By Registry Editor :

Start --> Run --> regedit --> ok

Then

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Name: EnableTaskMgr

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 0=Disablethis key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager

Howdy,I created a post on the "Am I Infected?" thread back on 11/02/2009 and Mark (garmanma) has been helping me. He does not feel I am infected but stated I could always touch base this you kind folks so here I am. My task manager won't come up with ctrl+alt+delete, ctrl+shift+esc, start -> run-> taskmgr, or from right click on the task bar? We tried all kinds of neat little programs to see what was up but to no avail, however we didn't try the HijackThis route so I am hopeful. The previous post can be found at the following link provided (if you're curious as to what solutions have already been explored), http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/top...ml#entry1491790. Okay, this is one for the books. A freind noticed about a week ago that if he hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and selected the Task List button, he gets dropped right back into his desktop (it's basically acting just like the Cancel button). He can, however, get to Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting it from there. WEIRD. Has anyone else here ever seen this phenomenon?? The Helpdesk was stumped, and this is certainly a new one on me.

Oh, Win2K, SP4, he's got an IBM Thinkpad T40, and it happens with both the laptops own keyboard and the keyboard hooked to the docking station at the desk, so it's not a keyboard issue. We can't bring up Task Manager with Ctrl Shift Esc, either, but typing taskmgr into Run fires it right up. We're going to hit the machine with Spysweeper tomorrow, but he is running Zone Alarm Pro and as it's a company machine he doesn't clickity-click and download things.

It's been suggested the GINA is pooched. I'm thinking of maybe copying msgina.dll from another machine...or is that a Bad Idea?

I always get these kinds of cases - I must be a weird magnet.

Went online and found out it could be a bad thing. Ran Hijackthis and saw a lot of things..stuff I really don't know about for sure. One thing I recognized that had apparantly caused me problems before was "My Web Search". I had "fixed" it before w/Hijack this, but this time it wouldn't go away. Trying to "fix" it caused Hijackthis to behave in such a manner that I thought it might have been corrupted. So I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. This is where I figured It was a situation calling for someone who knows something about something. I tried to follow all the directives before I posted this but RootRepeal said it wouldn't have anything to do with Vista 64 bit. Is there a similar application that will work with it? Also I guess I couldn't figure out how to make a zipfile with the "attach" thing. I would really appreciate your help and the opportunity to learn something about these things. I ran scans with AVG & Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found adware but nothing malicious.

Although regularly scheduled virus check with Norton 360, I suspect there might be some virus in my PC. I started notice something wrong yesterday as I could not run ctrl-alt-del to access Task Manager and run regedit. I soon also noticed my Norton360 has been deactivated and could not be activated manually. So I contacted Norton for support. Followed their instructions I removed Norton 360 with the intention to reinstall the software. That?s when I found out I could not even complete the Norton360 installation. The only suggestion I got from the technical supports at Norton is format my PC, which I really hope to avoid.
I have since run online scans using Trend Micro Sysclean and Panda ActiveScan, both tools report nothing suspicious.
I have found HijackThisLog has helped the other member fix a very similar problem back in 2004, I?m attaching my log. Please can anyone provide any help or guidance to get me back to being able to run these programs. Many Thanks.

This is a real strange problem in Windows XP (Home, if that matters). Everything seems fine, taskmgr.exe works fine if I open it or make my own shortcuts (icon or keyboard) to it. Just the default windows keyboard shortcuts aren't working for me (ctrl+alt+del mainly, but I've tried a few).

It seems like somehow or another, Windows either lost the file that should point to task manager, or that file is pointing to the wrong place. When I hit the key combination, nothing happens, no error message or anything. Right now I have taskmgr.exe set to run off the combination Ctrl+Alt+End (close to del ), but this is annoying for me as I never remember and also for my family.

I thought it might be some kind of spyware deal since they hate you messing with their processes, but so far all the scans turn up empty.

Does anyone know what the problem might be, or at least to point me in the right direction? Thanks for all your help!

The fastest/easiet way to bring up the "TaskManager" is to right click on a blank part of the Task Bar. The ensuing menu includes "TM." Not an answer to the "why", but a trick that is really neat.

Hello

I am running Windows XP on a Toshiba Tecra Laptop. A couple months ago my supervisor "hooked" my laptop up to our work network, and ever since when I try to get to the task manager by Ctrl + Alt + Delete, another box comes up. This box has no title, but has the columns: User, ID, Status, Client Name, and Session. There is a user logged on, with an ID of 0, a status of active, and a session of console. The only options are to disconnect or logoff (both at the bottom of the box if you right click on user). I showed this to my supervisor, and he has no idea how to get me back to task manager. Anyone have any ideas?!

Thanks!

I don't think so. That was deliberately done in Vista. Ctrl+Shift+Esc is the current hotkey. You can try a hotkey program and assign Task manager to Ctrl+Alt+Del though. Have a look it:

A:need to know how can get back my task manager when i click ctrl+alt+del

When I hit CTRL ALT DEL the task manager doesn't come up. However, this only happens when using either the left ALT, left CTRL, or both. If I use both right CTRL and right ALT, the task manager does come up. Either DEL and numpad DEL work with the right CTRL and ALT. In addition, CTRL SHIFT ESC also brings up the task manager, whether right CTRL SHIFT or left CTRL SHIFT (or a combination right and left) are used. Also, if I right click on the taskbar and choose "Task Manager", it comes up fine. Did I somehow disable the left hand CTRL ALT DEL combination? If so, how can I restore that functionality? I am running Windows XP SP2. Thank you!

I`ve only ever used right hand CTRL,ALT,DEL.How much do you really need to use the left hand variation ?

I miss how CTRL+ALT+DEL brings up the task-manager instantly in Windows 7 instead of bringing up the screen with options to lock the pc, change user etc.

Can I change this somehow?

Using XP SP1. I could always use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to open the task manager. Now, it doesn't. But I CAN open it with Ctrl/Shift/Esc.

What happened? Did my system get a virus or trojan? Never had this happen before if I can remember. Tried rebooting, but still doesn't work.

Someone gave me an old computer running Windows 2000 pro to fix and it had tons of issues with it (spyware, trojans). After running multiple scans, I've finally cleaned up the entire thing and it is working perfectly except for one tiny little problem.

Hitting the keys CONTROL ALT and DELETE will bring up a "Windows security" window which will have a button to access Task Manager, but when I hit the button it will not bring up the Task Manager. Right clicking on the task bar at the bottom and clicking on "Task Manager..." will not bring it up either. Hitting CTRL SHIFT and ESC does not bring it up either. However, Start/run/tskmgr.exe DOES work. I should mention that this problem has existed for a long time now, according to the person who owned the computer. They say they used to be able to run Task Manager using the CTRL ALT DEL method, but it just stopped working one day.

So basically, Task Manager works ONLY when using the START/RUN/tskmgr.exe method. I guess it could be a virus of some kind, but keep in mind that I've just got done running tons of scans, IN SAFE MODE to boot, and it has brought up absolutely nothing. When I try any of the other methods to open Task Manager (ctrl alt del, ctrl shift esc, right clicking task bar) it pops up for maybe a half second, and closes. What's interesting is that I'll hit CTRL SHIFT ESC and leave the buttons pressed opening up many of these disappearing little windows, and I can actually se... Read more

I read previous forums on how to fix this but am still having the issue.

Anyway, I used to be able to bring up task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+delete once, and it I pressed that two times in a row I was able to shut down my computer if I needed to. None of that works anymore. I can still access task manager by right clicking on the taskbar. I did recently Uniblue and have been cleaning the registry, so this may have something to do with it but I'm not sure. Here is the Hijack This log. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

My computer monitor suddenly went black with only my mouse cursor showing. The computer was rebooted. And after with the windows login, the monitor was black again. I did a ctrl-alt-delete and was able to access task manager. I shut down Explorer.exe. Then went to Task Run and started it again. Still just a black screen. I am running a Dell XPS 435mt with Vista Windows Home Premium. I don't think it's a video issue because I did some diagnostics tests, and everywhere else I can see the screen, except windows.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Also when attempting to boot in safe mode it has hung after "Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys" with only a "Please wait..." message.

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

Hi to All,

I have an friends HP ProBook 4510s running Windows XP Professional that will not show the Desktop after logging in to Windows.

This maybe a virus of some sort ???

Normally if it is, it is usually an "Explorer.exe" problem that can normally be resolved by by pressing "Ctrl Alt Del" to bring up the "Task Manager" then running a new task like "Explorer.exe" or "Regedit" that eventually enables me to resolve the problem.

In this particular case, when I press "Ctrl Alt Del" it just brings up another version of the Windows Login Screen, not the Task Manager.

I have also tried to boot "ERD Commander" off a CD but it gives me the "Blue Screen of Death".

Error Number: *** STOP: )0000007B (0xF789E640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

I have also tried to put the Windows Installation CD in the Drive but get the same sort of problem.

FYI, I also had HP replace the DVD drive after this problem appeared as it was not working at all.

Any help to help me slove this puzzle would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Regards

Luka123

A:Blank Desktop after Login, "Ctrl Alt Del" does not bring up Task Manager

Hi to all,
well... I managed to find out what this problem was...

In the 1st instance, I gave the Laptop to HP and they told me the DVD error was caused by an incorrect setting in the Bios, but they didn't tell me what setting they changed ... but at least that resolved the hardware error.

As for the Blank Screen virus.....

After the DVD drive problem was solved I was able to backup the PST and other critical Office files to a Western Digital USB Passport Drive by using "ERD Commander"....What a great program this is...It has saved me on many occasions -:)

Then I :

1. Reformatted C: Drive and Re-Installed Windows from a set of Recovery Disks
3. Re-Installed Office
3. Updated Windows
4. Re-Installed the previously saved backup files from the WD Passport Drive to C:\

I determined this strain of the "Blank Screen" Virus could not be repaired. I haven't come across a fix for this yet. As previously mentioned for previous versions of this virus pressing "Ctrl-Alt-Del" on startup usually brings up the Task Manager allowing a way into the file system...but this particular strain of the virus disables "Ctrl-Alt-Del" making life very difficult.

Anyway, at least part of the puzzle has been solved.

Regards

Luka123

I not quite sure what you saying but I believe what you saying it the menu part and option part of the windows task manager is not showing.

Easy fix for this on the screen that does show near the top of it double click with your mouse. This should fix the problem.

I am not sure if it's related to a malware. so I posted it here. My system is a xp pro, sp3 ,IE7 . I have a wireless networking with total 2 computer attached. My system was running smooth then I don't know why from time to time when clicking on links in IE7 would produce no result. Then I would have no more connection to wireless network and no internet. However the other computer attached to router would still have internet. Then I would try to bring up task manager ctrl+alt+del but it won't show. later I will have freeze but not for the whole computer. when I try to restart computer it won't do it, or very very slow. error message is usually " hsm sink won't end" or something similar, I end manually, still windows won't shutdown. Finally I have to hold power button to shutdown and restarts.
There is not specific time period for this to start to happen, 1-2 or 3 hours. I don't know what triggers it. I thought maybe IE7 is the problem so I started using google Chrome browser. I still have this happening.
I have the DDs text here, and the other 2 logs attached. I disabled panda antivirus before starting this process.

Thanks
