CMOS Jumper In Wrong Place, What To Do?

Q: CMOS Jumper In Wrong Place, What To Do?

Hi,
To put if breifly I was wiping the cmos after some trouble I'd had with my PC, I got distracted and when I went back I powered up the computer with the cmos jumper still in the wipe position. It won't boot to windows and seems pretty messed up, anybody know if how I could get around this?? I'm I right in thinking I could flash the bios, I haven't personally done that before so if somebody could speak me through what to do I'd be most appreciative...

Thanks in advance,

Preferred Solution: CMOS Jumper In Wrong Place, What To Do?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: CMOS Jumper In Wrong Place, What To Do?

Have you switched the jumper back to the correct position?

Does the computer POST? Do you hear a beep or see anything on the screen?

I am assembling a PC for the first time, and am having the "does not POST" problem. I've read through some previous threads here (googling the problem is how I discovered this website), and I THINK I have everything set up correctly, except for the CMOS jumper.

I've found the place on the motherboard where the plugs go, but I can't find anything to plug in there. Is this something that would be coming from the case?

The only thing coming from the case that isn't already plugged in is a bundle of four plugs, two three-prong and two single-prong. The three-prong plugs are numbered 1 and 2 and are labeled GROUND, +D, and -D. The single-prongs (also numbered 1 and 2) are labeled +5V. I thought this bundle was for the front USB ports, but I could be wrong.

In case it matters, the specs are:

Board: MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz
Video: MSI NX6600 AGP 8x
RAM: 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR 400 (currently only one installed, to cut down on the variables of the problem)

All of these components are brand new. The power, case, hard drive and floppy disc are inherited from the previous system.

Other things I've checked based on other techspot threads:

Both power connectors are plugged in.
The RAM is in the right slot and well-seated. I've tried booting up with each chip in the #1 slot, with the same result. So either they aren't the problem, or both RAM chips are bolluxed.

Tipically the "clear cmos" is 3 pins with a 2 pin jumper.
pin 1&2 clear the cmos and pin 2&3 is default.
There are boards that have pin jumpers that need to change
inorder to flash the bios.
Look in your manual page 2-24
The motherboard provides the following jumpers for you to set the computer?s
function. This section will explain how to change your motherboard?s function through
the use of jumpers.

MSI Reminds You...
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off.
Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the
system is on; it will damage the mainboard.
Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1
There is a CMOS RAM on board that has a power supply from external battery
to keep the system configuration data. With the CMOS RAM, the system can automatically
boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the system
configuration, use the JBAT1 (Clear CMOS Jumper ) to clear data. Follow the instructions

I Have an old Compaq, it has a 900 MHz p3. I was upgrading the ram when I saw the Jumper reset, I moved the prongs to reset and started the computer. The computer went to the Compaq screen and checked the Ram, shutdown and restarted to check again and it kept repeating. I moved the jumper back to normal operating and the computer won't start. THe fan will start and the processor will run but nothing happens. THe computer will not stay off unless I unplug it. Please help. I'm have win 2000 pro.

A:Jp 1 cmos jumper reset

Unplug the computer. Remove the battery usually located near the jumper. Move the jumper back to reset and leave there for 15-20 seconds. Put the jumper back to normal and replace the battery. Plug in and reboot.

I know putting it from 12 to 23 position resets the bios settings to default but I was wondering what exactly does it do internally? Does it stop electricity from the battery reaching the mobo? And is taking the battery out the same as doing the thing with the jumpers?

Also, when taking the battery out sometimes I get a video failure beep code but I never get it when using the jumpers, what causes this?
Just for general knowledge

A:How does the CMOS jumper work?

I believe it does the same as removing the battery, however I would always first use the Reset to Defaults option to avoid risk of static shock ruin: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

The computer is a dell desktop with windows xp. After all power is cut off, when I go to turn it on the power light blinks amber over and over. It continues to do so and the computer will not start unless I pull off the cmos jumper, then I don't even have to hit the power button again, the computer boots up immediately by itself when I pull it. The PSU is good and I have tried starting it with every configuration of hardware attached. The only visible motherboard problem is 1 blown capacitor, but once the computer is on it will run perfect until it is powered off. The cmos battery is good and everything else I have checked is good I have no clue where to go next the ONLY way to get it to cycle on is to pull that jumper off. It's not a huge problem since I know I can start it I'm just extremely curious now. Thanks is advance.

Hello everyone. Hopefully one of you clever people will be able to help me with this problem.

I have just installed a new motherboard and processor and upon starting for the first time everything seemed to go fine. I then read in the manual that clearing the CMOS was recommended so I did as advised (moved the jumper to clear, waited, moved it back), but then upon switching the computer back on the monitor would refuse to come on (the computer would start checking the CD-roms drives, so I assume it is at least booting).

I got a bit annoyed so I decided to see what would happen if I left the CMOS jumper set to 'clear' and, as it happens, everything started up perfectly and appears to be working fine. The questions I have are:

What effect will having the CMOS set to clear have on my computer?

What the hell is going on and how could it be rectified?

Many thanks.

A:Computer only starting with CMOS jumper set to 'clear'.

The procedure to clear the CMOS is a little more involved that you described and may be the source of your problems. Try this:

1. Unplug the PC from the wall and put on your ESD (static discharge) strap.
2. Remove the battery from the mobo. (should be right next to the jumper).
3. Now move the jumper to the "clear CMOS" pins.
4. Move the jumper back to the regular pins after a couple of minutes.
5. Replace battery.
6. Plug PC back in and boot up into BIOS.

If the above doesn't help, then remove everything form the motherboard but 1 stick of RAM, the video card and the CPU/HSF (unplug all drives iincluding the hard drive) and do the above procedure again and see if you can get into BIOS.

Good luck.

This pc had a dead generic 250w switching PSU so I replaced it w/ a 300w switching psu but when I turn the power on I don't get any beeps at all and my monitor has a message to check the pc and that the monitor is working properly. I thought that clearing the cmos might do the trick but I can't find one on the mobo and I can't find a manual online to tell me where it is. I took the battery off for about an hour but that didn't help. I can hear the HD working when I power it up but nothing shows up on the monitor.

I think I'll replace the vid card and see if that makes a difference.

Any opinions anyone?

TIA.

Hi!

I just installed XP Profession on a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive . . . but I must have gotten the jumper wrong. It's installed, but all it's showing is 32GB!

If I shut down and change the jumpers to show my 250GB, is that all I have to do? Or will I have to repartition it? Or what? Yikes? Or should I just change the jumper settings, and then reinstall XP?

Thanks for whatever suggestions you can give me.

A:Got the jumper settings wrong

A really old bios would give that problem, but I would guess that there is a jumper on the drive (not the usual master/slave one) that is limiting its size.
Edit: Using FAT32 would do it also.

*Solved* I messed up, powered on while cmos jumper set to "clear"

That's right, me someone who deals mainly in hardware made such a stupid mistake.

I've never done this before so I've never had to remedy the problem.

I set the jumper to clear, went off and did a few things came back plugged it in not thinking and fired it up, the fans spun for a second and it shut off, now me being the stubborn ******* i am i continued to try and figure out why it wasnt powering up, until finally i remember oh crap, you were clearing the cmos.

The board is an old DFI Lanparty PRO875, Im using it and the hot 3.00ghz Prescott to run as my media center PC.

it was at the point where it wouldnt go past the post so i was clearing the cmos.

now, i have no clue if it can be fixed, google turned up nothing.

Please tell me i can save it, its just an old board i had lying around but it served a purpose, and it served it well.

EDIT: I guess i should be patient, i left the battery out for however long its been since i did it, powered it on a few times to no avail, then the final time it came up no problem...

I don't really know why it suddenly started working...

Just removing the battery and replacing the battery doesn't allow the accumulated charge in the board's capacitors to dissipate. Leaving the battery out of a few hours (or overnight) wil allow the charge to dissipate or the same result can be achieved by pressing and holding down the Power button (after turning off the power at the wall)

My usual procedure is:

Remove power from the system.
Hit the power button to discharge the capacitors.
Move the CCMOS jumper to the clear position. (or press the CMOS button)
Remove the battery from the motherboard.
Spend an hour doing stuff you wouldn't be neglecting if you didn't have a computer
Replace the battery.
Place the jumper back in the normal position.
Restore power and boot up immediately into BIOS.
Select "Load Optimized Defaults" and set the recommended voltage for your RAM
Save & exit.
On reboot, go directly into BIOS and set the recommended timings for your RAM and any other options you'd like to set (i.e. boot order, voltages, power saving etc.)

A:may be in the wrong place

The monitor you have now, as the old monitor you had, should have some buttons or knobs on the front of it. These are used to resize the image, adjust it's position etc. Try them out looking for the obvious such as a knob with an image that looks like it will stretch it etc. Also, you might want to adjust your settings to a different resolution. For example: 800X600, 1024X768 etc. To do that, just right click on an empty space on your desktop, select PROPERTIES, then left click on SETTINGS, then move the slider under SCREEN AREA. Hope this helps, T.

A friend has just created a new subdomain of his existing site. If I go to http://www.newsubdomain.existingsite.com, I see the host's generic "new site will be available soon" message. BUT if I go to http://newsubdomain.existingsite.com (that is, the same address, but without the leading "www."), I wind up on the site for some perfectly innocent-looking automotive specialty parts distribution company. (It looks like they mostly sell to retailers, not the public, so it makes no sense at all for them to be complicit in this apparent hijacking, although someone could have put something malicious on their site, I guess.)My computer is a laptop running WinXP Pro. AVG, spybot and Ad-aware scans find nothing amiss. The machine has no other symptoms of any kind of infection, afaict. The problem shows up regardless of whether I use Firefox or IE, but another machine on my home-network does NOT have this problem, so I know it's not a case of my ISP's DNS cache having been poisoned. I did run ipconfig /flushdns from a command prompt; that didn't fix it.Could this just be some simple corrupted record somewhere, or must we conclude a malware infection?TIA!!!

Or when the washing machine switches from wash to spin. (The fan only does it switching from "hi" to "medium," not from med to slow.

I have WINDOWS XP, and can't figure out what other topic this question might belong in...

I don't know when or how it happened, but two file folders MY SHARED DOCUMENTS and CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS are now in MY COMPUTER.

MY COMPUTER, where it shows the drives. I am pretty sure it never had yellow folders in it before.

I think they should be in C DRIVE? There is a MY DOCUMENTS in C Drive, but it has nothing in it. I'm the only one who uses this computer, but apparenty everything saved goes into CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS. SHARED DOCUMENTS has various folders in it that I suppose would be shared by all, if others used the computer, too.

I've tried dragging them there (or anywhere) but only shortcuts appear in the new area. The folders still say in MY COMPUTER. They won't copy and paste.

When I open something, like in WORD, etc. I can still find them, just they are under MY COMPUTER.

So, they still work, it just seems strange, like they shouldn't be in MY COMPUTER. Unless I have totally missed this for the past year, I don't remember ever seeing them in there before. I take pictures off my memory card with a removable drive, which shows up as F drive, so I look in MY COMPUTER to click on this, all the time.

What happened and how can I fix it? Actually, since it seems to work this way, the only reason to fix it seems to be it looks odd this way.

Hi, has anyone ever experienced this, in Win XP?

I'll try to explain the best I can... my father (on his computer), was playing around with his taskbar putting it on the sides to see if he'd like there, I guess...

Now he's got repeats of his icons from the desktop sitting on his taskbar, fullsize. We tried to delete them, but if we did, they would also delete the twin that's on the desktop. I found this too be so weird, his taskbar is now about an inch and a quarter high, and we could not reduce it.

Has anyone ever seen such a glitch?

I don't think a restore would do anything, it being icons...

Could anyone tell me the best utility for fixing the registry/broken links/shortcuts etc in XP Home. My computer has become quite slow and I think I may have a lot of rubbish cluttering up the system.I do tend to trial a lot of progs and then uninstall them.

A:This question may be in the wrong place

Personally I would not 'fix' anything in the Registry. Yes there may be a few broken links but they will be taking up minimal space and will probably not cause your system to slow down that you would notice.. Better to defrag your hard disc and run something like Cleanup! to clear out your temp files etc.

I got broadband last week and we're only allowed 2GB monthly usage limit (hehe, well it is cheap). I was wondering if streaming videos counts towards this, like does it take up disk space? And is there any chance of viruses? Thanks, pretty random, but I'd like to know.

A:ok this is probably the wrong place, but...youtube

Hi...

Yes that will count towards your 2GB monthly allowance...everything you get from the internet will count (emails, webpages, videos, music etc).

It does take up disk space but once you clear your temporary internet files, that will solve the problem.

As with the risks of internet use, there is a chance of picking up spyware/viruses by downloading content....but the chances are far less with reputable sites.

Hope that helps :)

What does it mean when the screen that comes up before windows xp comes up... the black screen that tells you about your system comes up with a message like this

CMOS settings wrong
CMOS memory size wrong

What does this mean? How did it get this way cause I never made changes, and how can i make adjustments. When I hit F1 to enter set up it brings me to the standard CMOS set up. The date is January 21, 2003. I seem unable to change the date. On exit and continuing on to windows and opening up to my section, the clock is wrong as well as the date... it also reads January 2005. Can someone help me make the appropriate changes to my computer CMOS?

Sounds like your battery is getting weak. Pick up a new one and put it in. Take the old one with you so you get the right one. After you put it in go into the bios check your settings, then exit and save. Suggest you go into bios and write down the settings before you remove the battery

My computer is fairly new, but just out of the blue it decided to not let me turn it on. I get a black screen with a bunch of words, the ones I noticed are: CMOS Settings wrong, and CMOS Memory size wrong. Then it has press F1 to run set up or press F2 to load default values and continue. I understand this may have something to do with a battery, but I cant see it being dead already, I’ve only had the computer for two months if that. Just wondering if there is something else I can try before opening it up and changing a battery. If you can help, I thank you!

A:CMOS settings wrong?

try going into your bios (usually hit f2 or del)...and choose the option to restore your bios to default config

Sigh, back for another problem.

PC is about 2 months old now. About 2 weeks ago I started receiving an error
message while booting up. Very shortly after I boot up the PC, I receive a black
screen that points to "CMOS Settings Wrong" "Date/Time not set".

Press F1 to run SETUP, Press F2 to load default values and continue. Or something like that. At first I just pressed F2, it booted up normally, except my date and time were wrong. Went ahead and fixed it, np. A few days and some restarts later (doesn't do it during EVERY restart, but definitely some), I boot up and get the same message. This time I hit F1 and put in the correct date and time. I hit the save hotkey and it boots up normally with the time and date I just entered, np.

Basically, same problem, a few restarts or so days later, same thing all over again, regardless of if I F2 or F1. Most of them were normal restarts, nothing strange, although this time I was playing CoD: MW2 when the game froze up/sound skipping, so I turned the PC off, tried to turn the PC back on, and nothing... I know the mobo had power, the mobo light was on. Although pushing the power button did nothing.. I turned off the back power switch, replugged the power plug, turned the power switch back on, the mobo light lit back up, pushed the power button on the front, nothing... Tried this for a lil while with no luck. Ended up going to watch some TV, then I heard the boot sound and it had booted back up.

Hi,
My partner has Windows 2000 Pro installed and when she went to start up this message came up CMOS Settings Wrong. Also had lost some time on the clock. Was wondering if it was the battery and if it is where is it and how do you change and reset.
Thanks for any help.
John

A:CMOS Settings Wrong.

On the motherboard you will see a battery like in a watch but larger (usually) I would say that the battery needs replacing....take it out take it with you to any PC store and get a replacement..their not expensive...Put it in and restart the PC.

I have recently installed a new power supply due to the fact that the other one had seen the light. Now when I try to start up the system, the POST test is just fine but then I get the message that there is a CMOS setting wrong. (See picture) The system boots in windows and everything looks okay except the fact that my mouse and keyboard are not working. Any advice on whats going on?

Did you try setting the bios to default? Or removing cmos battery for about 5 secs. ? This might reset the bios for you. This may resolve your problem. If not post back.

I'm trying to use robocopy for mirroring my most important files between two computers. Except for one issue, it works as expected.

I'm trying to copy the complete "Documents" directory. Previously, this was called "My documents" and contained for example "My pictures". Now it doesn't, and I like that, but robocopy don't. Somehow it still searches for these directories, and of course can't find them. Seems robocopy needs a fix, or am I missing out on something here?

A:Robocopy looking for my directories in the wrong place

When I use robocopy, I use it in a text based batch file. So, as long as your paths are correct in the batch file it should go exactly where you tell it to. I haven't noticed any issues doing it this way with Windows 7.

Now i cant do any features including:
* make new account(when i type something like TEST, it says: you cannot use .,{[}]!?,etc in a account name)
*cant change account types( because i cant make a new account)
* cant give passwords to accounts
* guest cannot check internet connections but ben94 can, but ben94 cant do anything about connections because its a standard account

they are a few things to add to that list but i dont want to go off topic. if there's anyway to fix this, please tell me.

On the remote possiblity, do you have a backup from before the problem existed?

do you have a win 7 dvd to do a repair install?

Please run a system file check

(type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with Windows XP Pro. I have just changed my email host to lunarpages.com, and configured a new (IMAP) account in my email client Outlook Express per lunarpages instructions. I am able to send and receive emails, but the sent mails are being saved in the ‘Sent Items’ folder in Local Folders rather than in the IMAP account. Anybody know how to make them appear in a ‘sent items’ folder in the IMAP account? I’d ask tech support at lunarpages, but they’re gone until Tuesday.
Thanks,
Ken

I Just updated my bios from R1-B4 to R1-C0 and i havnt seen any differnce, bios options are the same, pc still has buggy boots before getting to Operating system select,
so what would a bios update do exsacly?

A:BIOS Updated But.... (Sorry If In Wrong Place)

I can't say without seeing the release notes on the bios update, Generally they will only fix one problem at a time. Often it's compatibility for hardware that you may not even have. Meaning you will be unaffected by the update at all.

For some time now I have had no sound. I think I might have plugged the sound connector into the wrong hole. On the back of my Dell Dimension #2350 PC are 3 holes (one pink, one light blue and one real dark blue). I currently have it plugged into the pink hole & was wondering if I should try one of the other two.

Have I got it connected in the right hole now or would I hurt anything by moving it to one of the other two holes?

I am a beginner and would really appreciate any suggestions and/or help as I really miss the sound, especially on e-mail cards I receive.

A:Have I Got Sound Connected In Wrong Place?

It would not hurt the computer or your speakers to plug it into the other holes.

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the wall (if they are that type of speaker), make sure they are turned on! And turned up! Put in some music, play it, and then plug the speakers into the different ports and see if they work.

If they still don't, let us know and one of us can walk you through it!

I've installed a windows to go on my USB driver. It works well, but only doesn't work on my own home computer.
The symptom is that it will boot from my hard drive(I've already set the BIOS to boot from USB drive).
I've checked the BCD file in my USB drive, it's normal when booting from other computers. But on my home computer, it will be replaced by another file, which contents are exactly same as BCD file on my hard drive. I don't know why.
So it there anyone who knows about the boot process of windows to go? And how could i solve this problem?
