Preferred Solution: Is there a shortcut to toggle icons & thumbnails ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I sometimes want to turn aero off quickly for a short period of time (e.g. when runing 3dsmax 64bit, the "disable desktop composition" in compatibility options is grayed out) and the method for vista (rundll32.exe dwmApi #102) doesn't work. Any ideas?

Try the compatability tab. There's an option to turn off visual themes when a program runs.

I like to toggle Conservation mode in Vantage onwhen I game quite often to make sure the battery doesn't charge always to 100% but still preserve battery life by not gaming while on battery. Is there a way to easily toggle this without having to open up Vantage every single time I want to toggle it? My only interest is to use it while gaming exclusively, so having open Vantage everytime just for that occasion is a bit annoying to do. Any help is appreciated.

The only built-in way to manually disconnect and reconnect in Windows 7 that I've been able to find, requires a lot of mouse clicks and even on my Core-i7 steel nerves when it starts "troubleshooting" to reconnect very slowly.

I found a better way and because lots of people in several forums have been asking for it I hope it's going to be a Sticky.

Download http://itsamples.com/downloads/network-activity-indicator.zip (always scan downloads for viruses)
Activate it, it will show up as the Windows XP network activity monitor in the tray.
Right click it and click Network Connections.
You've now opened an explorer Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network Connections.
(I'm sorry, I found no other decent way to get to here)

Lets say you want a connect/disconnect Local Area Connection toggle on your desktop. You simply right-drag Local Area Connection from this control panel to your desktop, once you release your mouse button click on Create Shortcut. You can create such toggle shortcuts for every network connection that shows up in the list.. A simple double-click on the freshly made desktop item connects or disconnects whenever you like.

If you don't like the XP style network activity indicator, feel free to remove it now. But remember, once you close the Network Connections window, there is no decent way in Windows 7 to reopen it. As far as I know only the Network Activity Monitor knows how to do that. By the way, I do like the visual indicator of n... Read more

All of a sudden the following symptoms (all at the same time)::
1. Taskbar icons gone (replaced by a neutral identical icon) except Edge and Store
2. In File Explorer, no longer thumbnails, no icons either, simply blank, but names show
3. All desktop icons gone; but their names still show and they "work"
4. When I rightclick to "Properties" (on desktop icons, or File Explorer items) nothing happens
5. Control Panel no longer shows icons, names only
Seems rather dramatic.... Anybody any idea?

For a computer-based-training course I need to create screen images. PrintScreen does a nice job taking screen-shots of the entire screen.

I can't narrow focus to particular windows but I need a way to quickly remove and restore the desktop icons.

I know about right-clicking the Desktop, Properties, Arrange Icons By, Show Desktop Icons. But this involves too many mouse clicks. It's OK for doing this every once in a while but I do lots of those in the course of the day.

Do you know of any way or tool to assign this to an unused hotkey on my keyboard?

There?s a YouTube channel that I like a lot of the videos on. So, each time I see a video link I?m interested in, I drag the link to a folder so that Windows automatically creates a shortcut to the video. The problem is I recognize some of the videos by the thumbnail that was displaying on the YouTube page. So, that?s when I got to thinking: Is there a program out there that will cache the thumbnail image for a video link that has an accompanying thumbnail image and use that to replace the icon on said shortcut?

Yes, for a page full of shortcuts, that could take some time. However, taking into consideration the fact that YouTube now offers a variety of thumbnail sizes (LQ, MQ, HQ, & BQ), the amount of data that gets downloaded can be determined just by the size of the thumbnail.

The Problem(s):
My computer recently lost the ability to display both the "file type icons" (showing AVI, FLV, MKV, etc.) in the icon view and "thumbnails" in the thumbnail view of all my video files located on my hard drive (C drive). Additionally (and separately), the video files located on my external hard drive WILL display the "Thumbnail" without a problem BUT WILL NOT display the icon as it once did either. Instead it displays a blank generic system icon for all my video files, no matter the "view". This is what it looks like:

The Icon Itself (showing on my external and C drive):
The "Icon" File View (w/ file names redacted) (showing on my external and C drive):

The "Thumbnail" File View (w/ file names redacted) (showing on my C drive):
Here's what I would like to know:

1. How can I restore (or whatever) my computer's ability to display "File TYPE Icons" (such as AVI, FLV, MKV, etc) as it once did, preferably w/o having to perform an entire system restore?

2. How can I restore my computer's ability to display "Photo thumbnails" of each video when viewed in "Thumbnail View"?

3. And if I'm not PUSHING it by asking this, I'd also like to be able to "CHOOSE" the program my video files associate with in order to display "File Type Icons". For example I prefer "GOM Players" icon style when displaying my icons.

Anyway, I've installed Firefox - so far so good, AVG Free and AVG Spyware,

Java console, etc.

Now, when I get on the internet in a variety of places, thumbnails and numerous icons don't show - i.e. when I get an email (thru Excite) instead of the thumbnail or the actual picture if it's embedded in the message, I get a small icon that I have to click on to open the picture, etc.

Another example is on eBay - none of the thumbnails and many other little things on any eBay page don't open - they also have to be clicked and opened on a separate page.

I've looked till I'm blue in the face and can't find any setting in anything that looks like it would fix that. i.e. on eBay, I made sure all the scripts are allowed, AdBlocker is turned off for eBay, etc. Looked thru all the Options on FireFox, can't find anything. I've got the same programs on my desktop but never did have that problem on it.

Appreciate any tips and where to look to turn off (or on?) whatever it is.

A:Thumbnails change into Icons . Why ?

File/folder view...is determined by the options set for each respective folder/directory/drive.If you move a file from a folder where the selected option is Thumbnail...to a folder/directory where the selected/default option is Icon, you will get what you describe. If you want to change the view option for that folder/directory, then you can do that.If you want all the options for every folder/file to be the same (I don't recommend this), you can also set this up.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812003Louis

Hi - I hope someone can help

When I look at my phone image files through my laptop via USB MTP using Windows10 I can see some file thumbnails as images (those from the DCIM Android folders - DCM images and other JPG images transferred to my phone from my camera) but other folders e.g. the Aviary folder, or other third party app adjusted photos, or Whats App images (in IMG format or videos) all show as the generic icon rather than thumbnail image (weirdly there's one out of hundreds of Whats App files that shows as an image (????!!!!). This means file management is virtually impossible.

I've googled this obviously and can see

a) that my Folder Option / View / 'Always show icons never thumbnails' is unchecked, and
b) that through advanced system performance settings the 'adjust for best appearance button' is pressed and the 'show thumbnails instead of icons' is checked

What am I missing? Can anyone help me resolve this -
Thanks in anticipation

In Settings you Must Choose between Thumbnail or Icon - I don't know which is which - all I know is that I have always had my settings to show a preview of the picture - for some reason - and I don't know if this has anything to do with it - I just updated my Firefox and coincidentally enough all I get with my photos is a symbol instead of being able to see what the picture is of.
I have tried everything I can think of in Windows 8.1 to change that but am having no luck which means I have to remember what I named the photo to find it.
Can somebody tell me how to get my a preview instead of a little symbol for my photos please?

And one other thing, some photos print blank when this happens. On two different printers. I'll get to that later, looked this up on google and it pointed me here but the thread it pointed two is over 475 days old. Usually my best bet is to do a control alt delete and shut down explorer and start a new task and another explorer. But this is getting annoying. Attaching a couple of examples.

Usually when this happens when I print a photo of say a celeb pic, it prints blank. Both on the Canon MP530 with ink and the Olympus P-10 via a thermal print (which isn't cool when both turn up blank. 100 prints for $40 isn't cheap. Any ideas? There are a few free get arounds but these don't seem to work reliably.

64 bit systems particularly give problems -- Adobe stopped the psd file thumbnail integration with Windows (File) explorer a while ago.

A 15 USD solution is available -- normally I always try and find free stuff but if you are doing a LOT of photoshop work with psd files then this seems to me a worthwhile investment. Works with W8 64 bit systems too.

A:Saving thumbnails or icons.

Sounds like you have some software the runs either on startup or shutdown that is cleaning these things out. Windows by default doesn't delete these things. Unless maybe there is a size limitation of the cache I'm not sure.

Thumbnail Caches are here: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Icon Cache would be here: C:\Users\Logic\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

When ever I open a folder with many files it takes a while to open or the icons/thumbnails take a long time to generate and in task manager it can be seen that msmpeng.exe is using a core of my cpu @ 100% level. disabling MSE fixes the problem. i've no other anti malware/security application. just MSE and windows firewall. i installed malware bytes now to verify that my system has no spyware though (came clean). windows defender is disabled.

We've baenhaving the oddest problem and I've been all over the net looking for solutions.

My hubby is running Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit on an Emachines PC.

Intermittently picture thumbnails and program icons will suddenly stop showing up and will turn to only blank white icons. (Sometimes it affects a few files or the whole folder) You can see the thumbnails one minute, go out and back into the directory, and they are gone. Refreshing the folder view does not bring the thumbs back.

Going into other folders is fine and thumbnails show, but once it fails on a particular folder, it will continue to NOT show thumbs or icons for that folder until a restart is done. We have also tried to clean the thumbnails cache to no avail. This problem happens on all drives, flash drives, network drives, local drives, etc...)

There is one other bug that may be related. Sometimes his My Computer will not load. He can get to My Documents etc... but My Computer hangs forever until he restarts. It is an intermittent problem as well so hard to debug.

ANy ideas at all? I really appreciate it!

A:thumbnails & icons sometimes not showing and My Computer not loading

few questions:
what Antivirus are you using
how long has it been since the date of install of the OS
do you use any registry cleaner or similar of this sort
start with SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and restart upon finding violations and post back.

Hi, yesterday I don't know what I did but suddenly video thumbnails disappeared, so I reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA version. I'm using a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64. VLC is the default media player. I've installed MPC-HC and K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA. Everything is up to date.

Once I reinstalled K-Lite MEGA pack, thumbnails appeared again, but now something's wrong. When I open the "Videos" folder, VLC icons don't appear. All icons are blank (there's no icon, just blank space with the file's name below) until the thumbnail is loaded.

Before, ALL icons appeared (VLC icon) and then the thumbnails got loaded. If I refreshed, the thumbnails didn't start to load again, the window blinked for 1 millisecond and then everything was already loaded.

Now, if I refresh, it starts all over again, all icons are blank and the thumbnails start to load again.

I've reinstalled MPC-HC, K-Lite MEGA pack, Disk cleanup thumbnails, show only icons, apply and then uncheck that option... Nothing changes

I don't understand anything. Here's a screenshot in the middle of the process:
There should be VLC icons instead of those blank spaces, and it shouldn't start to load everything each time I refresh.

A:Video icons don't show up until thumbnails are loaded

Question, why did you need the Codec pack to begin with? I find they cause more issues.

All my thumbnails load with no problem with windows media player with exception of some types of video files.

May have to reset. Try SFC.

If this issue started occurring after doing some recent software changes on your computer, then I would suggest you to restore your system back to a date when it was working fine. System Restore will affect Windows system files, programs, and registry settings only.

For System Restore steps, you can refer to the URL mentioned: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore

If the issue still persists, try running Hardware Diagnostics on the computer.

(When I'm creating document graphic designs I usually make three or four different trial versions which can get confusing when I am away from my work for a day or two!)

I tried Googling the problem and found some discussions on other forums but still haven't found a satisfactory solution.

Thanks for the screen shot; makes it very clear what you are describing.

If you select a file it will preview it in the Preview pane (maybe not all types of files). If you'd like the Preview pane smaller and the main area larger drag the divider to the right. If you don't want the Preview pane at all get rid of it (Organize - Layout - remove check from Preview pane).

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Try reinstalling your KMPlayer and VLC player.

After that do system file checker:
Right click Command Prompt → run as admin → sfc /scannow
