T470 Thunderbolt 3 DisplayPort and Slim Tip charger options

Q: T470 Thunderbolt 3 DisplayPort and Slim Tip charger options

Hi, I have a T470 laptop with the USB-C charger. I'd like to connect a DisplayPort LCD screen to use as a second display while simultaneously being connected to A/C power and charging my batteries. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what my options are. 1. I could buy a Thunderbolt 3 hub/dock with a DisplayPort connector on it. I would then connect the charger to one of the USB-C ports on the hub/dock, and the screen to the DP connector. From what I can see, these hubs are fairly expensive, so given that I currently don't need to connect any other TB3 devices I'd like to avoid it if possible.2. I could buy a USB-C - DP adapter or cable, but I have not seen anything with some kind of pass-through function which would allow me to connect my charger. I thought daisy chaining was something TB3 can do, but unfortunately the charger does not have the ability to do this (I know a DP connection has to be at the end of the chain).3. The T470 has a slim tip charge port, in addition to the ability to be charged via the TB3 port. Perhaps a USB-C - slim tip adapter exists which would allow me to connect my charger to the slim tip port, and not worry about the lack of daisy chaining in point 2. I've found a different adapter (wrong interface and wrong direction), but nothing that can do this. Thanks for any info/advice!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We recently moved from the Lenovo T470 to the T480. We have purchased two of the T480's, with both we have the same issue; The adapters we have used for the T470, won't work with the T480's. The ports do work with our usb-c displays.  Some background information, the monitors we are connecting too are both from Apple, Thunderbolt Display and the Cinema Display. We have no issue with the T470, with the same adapter. The adapter we are using is a Apple Thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2. We have also tried other adapters from some aftermarket sellers.  What we have tried already:Several adapters, none work. Both portsWe have tried deactivating the security in the BIOS for the USB-C, just to make sure we tried everything, but also no succes. We have spoken to our Lenovo reseller for over an hour, but no succes or tips.. Checking the thunderbolt software, if it gets recognized or anything but no. If anyone could provide some insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

The Precision 7720 with P5000 video card is specced at DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 1.4 and Thunderbolt 3. I know that you can get adapters to go from DP to HDMI or Thunderbolt to DP and HDMI though. If I have an application that requires HDMI 2.0 for example, can you get it from the Thunderbolt 3 port or the DisplayPort or is there an underlying limit to HDMI 1.4 in the processor itself? I'm having a hard time understanding the various capabilities.

I tried to ask on Reddit but it looks like nobody knows the answer. trying it here  where could I find a confirmation that the T470 with onboard HD 620 graphics can drive two 4K Dell P2415Q at 60Hz monitors when connected via Thunderbolt? PSREFs just say it can support up to 3 displays (which is cool, but at what resolution and what will be the refresh rate) and max resolution supported is 4K at 60Hz (again, great, but how many of them?)I was planning to use either the Startech's Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter or Dell TB16 dock to connect the monitors, as Lenovo is not providing ways to connect two 4K monitors over the DisplayPortIdeally, I'd love to have a dock which can connect both monitors but as I understand current generation of mechanical docks does not allow to use two 4k monitors, I guess it has something to do with bandwidth of chips used for DP ports in the docks.

You might need to enable it.

With the monitor connected, turned on and displaying your computer's desktop:

Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "playback devices."

In the white area of the dialog box, right click and make sure both "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" are both checked.

Right click on the various playback devices to make sure they're all enabled.

If you start something with audio, you should see the little green "meters" bouncing on one of the devices. Right click that device and set it to default.

Today, I noticed that my USB-C docking station was no longer passing video from my T470 to my monitor. The monitor's HDMI cable is plugged into a docking station that is connected to my T470 via USB-C. It's been working fine for more than a year. All other connectivity via the docking station works (e.g., keyboard, mouse, ethernet, power). The docking station, including video, works just fine with another (non-Lenovo) PC. My first thought was to check Lenovo Vantage or the support website for Thunderbolt software and/or firmware updates. The most recent software is several months old and already installed on my machine. I can see that there's a relatively recent firmware update on the website, but it's specifically for Windows 10 1809 or older. I am running 1903. When trying to install that firmware update, I receive an error message (can't find suitable bin file). Vantage does not find any updates for me to install. I did see this post, which mentions HDMI output not working as a symptom (among others). However, it recommends the Thunderbolt software that has been installed for several months as well as the firmware that I cannot install. I have two questions:Is anyone else having problems with HDMI output via their T470 USB-C/Thunderbolt port?Is there any news on when there will be a new T470 Thunderbolt firmware update for Windows 10 versions newer than 1809?

I would buy the USB-C, thinking if or when I replace the laptop, the USB-C charger is more likely to work as a spare.  As far as wattage, the 45W will be lighter, but 65W may charge some devices faster and is more likely to be compatible with any replacement.  (I am not suggesting that you are going to replace the laptop soon, but things happen and situations change.)

Thunderbolt controller is not in the list in Device Manager. (0x20B SDK_NO_CONTROLLERS)2. USB-C devices (flash, camera) do not work3. Charger only charges when laptop is powered down (when on, it barely maintains the battery level)4. HDMI doesn't work either What I've tried (several times now):1. Running Vantage and installing all updates.2. Flashing newest BIOS (1.44)3. Installing the "critical thunderbolt update".  - Software update went through.  - Firmware update didn't happen cause controller is missing4. Clean re-install of the Thunderbolt drivers, including  - 'sc delete nhi'  - deleting tbt* driver files under system32/driverstore/5. Battery reset (pin at the bottom)6. Toggling 'Thunderbolt assist mode' in BIOS. Current system status:1. BIOS version 1.442. OS version Win 10 Pro 17763 (1809)3. Thunderbolt Software version 17.4.80.550 Nothing worked for me so far. Any ideas as to what I can try next?

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

Are there any adapters to do this or ways to do this? I can't seem to find any.

I am buying new monitors, the dell u2414h. Now, while this does have hdmi, I will be connecting multiple monitors together to extend the display from the laptop to give me multiple screens. The problem with this is that it only works if you use displayport and not hdmi, so I need a way to convert the hdmi to displayport or mini displayport.

I will primarily be using these monitors with my laptop that has displayport, so that is why I am getting these monitors and that won't be a problem. I will most likely hook up other laptops to the monitors and hdmi is way more common from what I have seen on laptops than displayport and is why I need a way to go from hdmi to displayport or mini displayport.

Any ideas? Thanks.

A:Hdmi to Displayport/Mini Displayport

You can't, HDMI does not support daisy chaining in the manner that DisplayPort does and you can't use a simply adapter to go from HDMI to DisplayPort and get the features of DisplayPort.

Hi,
I myself own an XPS 15 9550 and noticed that I was not getting the full Thunderbolt 3 speedover it's Thunderbolt 3 port. I expected speeds around 2700MB/s, because of the overhead withthe theoretical gross speed of 3870MB/s, but I only ever got 1400MB/s out of it.
I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

After a while:Pulling Thunderbolt cables gave me 1 in 3 cases a bluescreen (internal power error). I did a BIOS / Thunderbolt / Driver update on 21th of May 2019. Everything was fine, restart worked. Went to work, this time, turned into standbye before pulling the cable. Everything was fine. At home, I opened the Screen after getting out of Sleep (old Linux Standby), saw the welcome for a short moment, and than bluescreen again.  Reboot, ... freezes in BIOS. Directly at the "Lenovo" Splash screen, before having the chance to put on the finger on the fingerprint reader.Super laggy. Tried EVERYTHING mentioned in this forum, enabled/disabled all settings in BIOS, had to reset with the button in the bottom with a paper clip, tried to deactivate internal battery. By a chance of 1 in 4 I could get into the BIOS or select a boot media.  Lenovo hardware test says, that everything is fine. Have been many times, close to a brick, since it hangs directly after pressing the power button. By chance could boot, made a backup. HDMI is also not working. Does not recognize any thunderbolt devices. Flashed old BIOS version, no difference.  What makes a difference: completely disabeling thunderbolt in bios. Than BIOS/booting works like a charm, b... A:X1Carbon6th, Pulling Thunderbolt cable broke Thunderbolt CHIP, BIOS is freezing, HDMI not working.

For me it sounds like the Thunderbolt Chip or Firmware is broken. Similar to the more popular bricking of Yogas, P51, before. I maybe could flash it manually like discribed here, but I guess, this is against warranty regulations: https://posts.nadim.computer/2018/10/26/repairing-a-thinkpad.html

Hi! I have 4 years old Lenovo Yoga Ideapad 13.  The problems started couple weeks ago, when the computer wouldn't run or start up without being plugged in. I followed some other people's advice and got a new battery. It seemed to fix to problem for while. Now few weeks after the same problem stands with the new battery. It won't start or run, but when plugged in it says the battery is 100% and charging.   I tried checking if the charger isn't working, but it charges all fine on my other Yoga, which has the same charger model. So please note that this isn't the common problem that is seen here on the forums, that the battery doesnt charge. I'm pretty frustrated, as this problem persists even though I changed the battery. Anyone have ideas? I figured it could have something to do with the battery wire connecting battery to the motherboard, but there doesn't seem to be any defects or loose wires.  However, I tried taking off the battery connection wire when plugged in, and then I get the message "No battery detected" instead of the regular "100% Fully charged". Any help is appreciated.

I just got my X1 Extreme yesterday. I updated the BIOS to 1.15 and also updated other drivers. The one pending thing is the Thunderbolt firmware update utility. The first pop-up says "do not connect any Thunderbolt device", but then a second pop-up right before the firmware update says "connect at least one Thunderbolt device. I cancelled the update for now due to the conflicting pop-up messages. Note - I do not have any Thunderbolt devices connected to my X1E laptop. Can I upgrade Thunderbolt firmware safely with no Thunderbolt devices connected, or?
