Background "picture position" respected only on primary monitor.

Q: Background "picture position" respected only on primary monitor.

Some background first. I have three 1920x1080 monitors. The central monitor is Landscape. The two side monitors are portrait, used for working with web browsers, code, communication . . . I find it easer to deal with large amounts of text in portrait, where I can continuously track a lot of text without tracking back and forth across the entire width of a widescreen monitor.

So, I'm trying to set a background. It works fine. It's abstract-ish, so I set the 'stretch' option. That works fine on the central monitor.

On the two side monitors, the image is compressed between the left and right sides of the screen, but does not stretch to reach the top or bottom of the screen. The extent that they seem to extend up and down seem to exactly match the dimensions and alignment of the central screen. If this is so, then it would mean that on the portrait monitors, the background is filling a 1080x1080 block in the center of a 1080x1920 display.

The only thing that functions properly is 'Tile'. None of the other options seem to produce any change in the image displayed. (In some of the options, though not all, this would be normal.)

Preferred Solution: Background "picture position" respected only on primary monitor.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all
Previously the "Save Picture" box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG. Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault. I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

I've repeatedly attempted to center, fill, fit or tile an image I wanted to use as a desktop background, but the changes do not take place. I can get the picture to be my background, but that particular change will not work. I'm able to change my theme in every other way, however. I've tried multiple pictures and each of the ways to change the picture position, but nothing has succeeded. I'm using Windows 7 home premium.

Any suggestions?

When I go to insert a picture in a certain program the "picture services" window pops up. I go to choose the "icon size" for my photos and it will not remember the selection, "medium icons" for the size of my photos in the selection window. It always reverts back to "large icons". I can only see 2 pictures at a time with "large icons" instead of 8 with "medium icons". No matter which option I choose to view my pictures it always reverts back to "large icons". Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have discovered a frustrating problem when i attempt to customise my desktop background. While i have had no problems selecting the desired images or an problems with the slideshow itself i an unable to alter the picture position, meaning that the picture position is permanently on stretch which distorted the pictures. I select Centre from the drop down bar and then save the changes but it makes no difference, the pictures remain stretched and when i re-open the Desktop Background menu the Picture Position has reverted to Stretch.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Hi and welcome to SevenForums!

The way you want to set your wallpaper is by openning windows explorer and browsing your image. Then right click on it and select 'Set as desktop background'.

Also make sure that your image is in jpg format. Now go back to the customization window and select option Centre, or whichever you wish.

I was having an issue with my Windows 7 cursor flickering between 'arrow' and 'working in background' at an irritianting rate and found the following TechSupportGuy thread a couple of minutes ago:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/642572-mouse-cursor-constantly-flickering-between.html

One of the posts in the thread lead me to the solution but unfortunately it seems most people have opted for reinstalling the OS instead!

Given the the original thread is closed I decided to create a new one and post the solution here in an attempt to prevent people from taking such drastic measures to get rid of this (incredibly irritant) issue in the future.

I simply disabled the Windows Search service and killed the process behind it (SearchIndexer.exe) in Task Manager. My cursor is now back to normal

Disabling this service means any new files will not be indexed although you can re-enable it and leave the pc running for a couple of hours every now and again so that new files are indexed. Hope this helps!

Hello:

Hi,

I was doing some major partitioning work on my comp...just to re-allocate space and so forth throughout my two drives.

But i found out on one of my partitions on my second drive (while I was trying to resize it by making it larger) that there was a an error : "Error 1555 Internal file number does not match position" and the resizing process halted.

I consulted Powerquest's website for a solution to this error (please see: http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id2419.cfm)

The problem is that the solution requires me to go into the drive itself and run CHKDSK /F, but on my system I cannot even see my drive unless it is within Partitionmagic.

I can't even see the parition in "My Computer", nor can i access it by going in dos mode... the error i get is "system cannot find the drive specified".

How do I get my partition to re-appear, so I can be able to run CHKDSK on it???

thanks in advance,

Zach.

Somehow the file holding my documents was moved. I know where it is, but it doesn't show up in the proper place under Libraries when I look at it with Windows Explorer.

Problem: My backup program looks in C:\users\Mark S. Bacon to find files to back up. My photos and music are there and current, but the "my documents" file was missing. I copied it from the library, but now I have a duplication in the library and in C:\users and the C;|users version does not change when I modify a file in the "my documents" in the library. (What I copied was not just a link, but the entire set of documents. I had hoped I was just copying a link to the files.)

Is the solution just to make my Cobian back up look in Libraries, not C:\users? Or is there a way to put things back they way they were? Would a system restore fix the jumbled folders in C:\users and the library? That would not be my first choice of solution as I would have to reinstall some software that I've loaded since the restore point. Or would I?

I know this sounds like a mess. It doesn't hinder my computer use, but it screws up backing up.

Thanks very much.

Hello,

I have tried to find an answer to this but cannot. Lately, I noticed my User Account Picture was not the picture I had selected. In addition, the Background Picture for my Windows 7 Home Premium edition log on screen was changed. This happened after running a program that is for exams at school which reboots your computer into a safe mode where the only program available is a rudimentary word processor.

I contacted the company that makes that software, Examsoft, and they told me how to get my default logon picture for my Windows Logon background back.

To address the User Account picture, I went into Control Panel > User Accounts and attempted to "change picture". This is not an option, however, for my administrator user account. It is an option for my guest account. I tried cloning my account without the bad .dat files, but that didn't work either as the new account I had created, also an administrator account, did not display a "change picture" option in control panel either.

I ran sfc /scannow, and it found no errors.

I am not sure what to do. Has anyone encountered this? Can you please help me?

Attached is a screen shot:

Thank You.

Title is supposed to say that it is NOT animated.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1737 direct from Dell.

Every time I turn on my laptop and log into my account, there would be a blue, animated circle cursor indicating that the laptop was just turned on and that it is working in the background.

Later on however, I noticed that whenever there were programs working in the background, my cursor shows a blue circle with a light in it, but it wouldn't be animated. This usually happens about 15 minutes after the laptop has turned on. I'm assuming that the cursor SHOULD be animated just like how it was during start-up.

I tried switching the pointers (eg. aero large to aero regular) and it seemed to solve the problem (i think), but after a while, the circle becomes frozen again; I am faced with the same issue. I tried downloading and installing different cursor sets (from DeviantART), and the ones that WERE animated in ANYWAY, were also frozen after a couple minutes.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem and would greatly appreciated it if they provided a solution.

I'm using a 64-bit 7 Home Premium with ATI Radeon HD 3650.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am trying to use my TV as a monitor for my computer. I have a GeForce 7950 and an Olevia TV. It has VGA and HDMI but I am trying to use the componet cables from my video card. The blue, green, and red ones. It shows up but everything is blue and white. The colors aren't coming in right at all. I have checked that they are matched correctly multiple times. I was wondering what I may be able to do to fix the problem? I have also tried reinstalling the video drivers. I would like to see if there is any way to fix this using the cables and not having to get a VGA cable.

A:TV picture for monitor"?

It is possible that there may be some type of "component video" type difference. The controller may be outputting Y,Pr,Pb signals while TV is expecting RGB signals.

It may be rather difficult for someone here to help troubleshoot your problem without knowing the exact brand and model number of the video controller card (I believe that GeForce 7950 refers only to the graphics ICs on the card) as well as the model number of the Olevia TV.

without a complete reinstall:

Quote from Fred Langa:
"Moving The Operating System To The New Drive
There are several ways to move the operating system to a new drive. But because I'm a fan of drive imaging, my preferred method for setting up the operating system on a new drive is this:

Still running the operating system on the old drive, I enter the Device Manager and uninstall the current entries under "Disk Drives." This in effect makes Windows "forget" what drives it's currently using. I then reboot to my disk imaging tool and create an image of the "no disks configured" version of Windows residing on the old drive. I then restore this image onto what will become the C: partition on the new drive. This whole process is measured in minutes, not hours, and gets a complete clone of the old Windows set up onto the new drive, with all the software and user files intact and ready to pick up from where they left off."

Quoted from Fred Langa

http://www.informationweek.com/LP/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=181502411&pgno=5&queryText=

He glosses over this part of the instructions expecting all his readers to understand this
critical piece. I believe that just this one paragraph would qualify as a complete article.

Anyone care to point me to an article that explains these steps?

I'm using Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and Acronis True Image 9

What do you guys think? Is that a real, unaltered photo? Or something created with some fancy image editing?

I even tried searching for moutain shots including different places in the world including the ALPS etc... and none of the mountains I saw look that "dramatic".

If this is a real village and mountain scene, do you have any idea where it is located because I wanna take a trip there someday if I ever hit the lottery.... LOL

You can't "share" incomplete downloads in a download manager in this fashion, because in each operating system, each installed version of the download manager program have their own unique configuration settings stored for download progress, and there is no way of usng a single download configuration across two or more operating systems.

Rather allow the download to complete before rebooting into the other os...

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Just a dumb question: what does this operation do? When in the photos application, select a picture. Then right click. There's a "Set as" button. You click that and there are a couple of choices. One is "Application Background". What is that? I could just click it and see what it does, but I didn't want to change something away from a default and find that I couldn't figure out how to get the default back. So I thought I'd ask here.

How it happened: I started up my notebook on 'F8' > 'Device Driver Enforcement Protection' = off , and my comp booted into win7 (x64 professional), and it blue screened, and would then boot to a screen with a blinking '_ '. I hooked up my hard drive to a desktop pc and its showed that the disk had the majority of the drive (the space my win7 partition used) marked as 'unformatted' (other than NTFS).

In Short: So, all my files are marked in an NTFS partitioned that became an unformatted partition. How do I re-partition the area of the disk as NTFS without wiping my data within those boundaries.

Thanks

Hi

I got a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M grafical card in my notebook. However, most of the time I use the Intel integrated graphics (Ci7-2670QM processor). All NVIDIA drivers and NVIDIA applications are installed too.

When I double-click any 3D picture file (*.jps file), the NVIDIA 3D Vision Photo Viewer is then called; however, the app doesn't seem to find the display adapter of nvidia and generates an error:
"primary display's adapter does not support nvidia 3d vision".

I tried to fix the problem using the NVIDIA's Control Panel by setting the gt540m as the preferred gpu, and rebooting the computer a few times, but it does not help; the error keeps on popping up. I've also associated the gt540m as the preferred gpu specifically for the /NVIDIA 3D Vision Photo Viewer/ app, but also that does not help, not even after a few reboots.

I read somewhere one should install the NVIDIA Optimus app but I prefer to solve the problem manually and not let the problem be solved in a hidden way by some other app---Optimus in this case.

So, any suggestions how I should start tackling the problem?

Thanks in advance,
Johan

Hello friends,

I'm really in need of help with this wireless networking problem I've been having. I am aware that there are quite a number of threads with the same issue, but most of the advice that I saw and tried didn't work. Most of the in-depth tech stuff just goes over my head, but.. I know roughly what's going on, so please don't pull any punches, if I don't get it I'll ask for clarification!

I recently bought and installed a Belkin Wireless Universal Range Extender (F5D7132) to cover the blind spot in my house (namely my room). The signal strength is fantastic; I'm getting 5 full bars, but it intermittently cuts off the connection going to 'Local Only'.

When I use the Windows Network Diagnostic to test the connection, I get the message "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server (192.168.1.254) – Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response." I've did some elimination work, and I believe the problem lies with the Belkin WURE, and not my 2wire 2701HGV-E modem/wireless router since I don't have this problem when I turn the Belkin off and my notebook is next to the 2wire.

The fix for it is "Reset the network adapter “Wireless Network Connection”. The fix does work, but it is only temporary. It seems like it's only a matter of time before it conks out again. Interestingly, my HP notebook seems not to regress to 'Local Only&q... Read more

My friend gave me a vista laptop that she was having problems with and didn't want anymore. For the longest time, the wireless worked perfect then about a month ago, it would work here and there; never consistently. She did Compaq recovery and reset everything and the wireless worked for a bit then stopped so we ran her a hardwire from our router which worked for awhile then stopped. Every time the wireless stopped working, we would get the error "cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server (64.86.133.53)" with an option to "Reset the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection". Then it tries to repair and I get "Windows tried to repair but a problem still exists. Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server (64-86.133.51)". It tries to repair and then the whole process starts over again. I don't know if this matters but we have Verizon Fios and everything runs through a wireless/hardwired router that Verizon supplies. Everyone else in the house is hardwired and we have never had any problems. And anyone else that has brought wireless in to our house has never had problems. Please help!!! Thanks so much.

There is a worm named W32.Tidserv.G that is known to configure primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses of a computer with the same two that you have. This can be an infection on the computer in use, or it could be another on the network, and it can infect all computers on your LAN!.

Try removing both the DNS server designations, and manually configuring 192.168.1.1. But this likely will not do the trick.

You may want to take this to the Malware Removal Forum for help.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I just bought a Linksys Router model BEFSR41 and installed it step-by-step. Everything appeared okay until the last step of the Setup CD. The bar loaded 99% and then said "Router not found."

I called Linksys and we tried for an hour to fix the problem. Finally he said it must be a defective router. So I exchanged it for another. Still the same problem with the new router.

When I open my Network and Sharing Center, it says I'm connected to a local network but not to the internet. When I diagnose the problem it says "cannot communicate with primary DNS server 192.168.1.254."

Does anyone know how I might fix this? I've tried to reset the router and also to power down everything and power back up.

I have At&t DSL internet. The modem is a Motorola. I'm running Windows Vista.

Thank you so much.

Hey guys,

I'll be getting a copy of Windows 8 very shortly, (After becoming Accredited for Windows 8. Cheers, Microsoft), and I'd like to have a system partition.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit installed on my system at the moment, but my hard drive is not yet partitioned. My plan is to have a system partition so that when I use the "Custom Install" option when installing Win8, I can wipe Win7 out of it and do a clean install of Win8.
I want to make sure I get this right with nothing exploding, so I figured this would be the place to ask.

I checked in "Disk Management" and was going to follow a tutorial I found within the depths of SevenForums, but the tutorial says to partition "Unallocated" space, whereas I have "Primary Partition" for my entire hard disk space.

Any solutions for me?

A:Partitioning a "Primary Partition" Win7 Ultimate 64bit

Do you want to get completely rid of Windows 7?

I assume you do.

In that case, you would boot from the Windows 8 disk and delete all partitions during the Windows 8 installation process. That will get rid of Windows 7.

You will end up with a small System Reserved partition and a large primary C partition, containing Windows 8.

You don't need to worry about unallocated space, primary partitions, etc. Just delete all existing partitions.

If you want to have BOTH Win 7 and Win 8 on the same PC, that's another story.

After Win 8 is installed, you can then go back and make another partition for data or some other purpose if you like.

Hello guys,

This is my situation - I have got a computer which previously was used by some other user. While looking through the system, I see the OS is installed in C drive, while I can also see there is a 'Windows' folder in D drive too, which makes me believe that at some point of time there was another Win7 installation in D drive too.

Now I want to free up D drive for Ubuntu installation (I will make a dual-boot system). My plan is to delete the D drive, then install ubuntu there. But I when I click 'Delete Volume' from disk management, it says - "Windows cannot delete the active system partition on this disk". The reason is, OS is installed in C drive (it is tagged as "Boot, Crash Dump") but the active partition is D drive. So I guess it contains the bootable files.

Can anyone please suggest me how to proceed to get a clean system where C drive will have all that is necessary for Windows7 and D drive will be free for Ubuntu installation ? I am attaching the screenshot of my disk management.

Thanks
Subhasis

A:Delete "System, Active, Primary Partition" in Windows7

Windows terminology is a bit weird in this case. The "Active" partition is the one with the boot flag set in the partition table. If Windows is the only OS installed, it will also contain files needed by the Windows bootloader. The "Boot" partition is the one that contains the Windows installation you're booted to.

According to this thread the "Active" partition must be a Primary Partition, in which case you're out of luck. You may be able to move your Windows install from C: to D: but I doubt it would be easy. You may also be able to delete much of what's on D: and move the contents of I: or G: there, then install Ubuntu to one of those. But if you're not careful you could render Windows unbootable.

Your partition table looks like it was created by the Ubuntu installer when allowed to use the entire disk. I always thought it was a poor solution, TBH. If I were you, I'd backup everything to another drive and start from scratch, installing Windows first.

Let's add some pings here.
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

Paste the results in a message here.

My Dell 4600C's XP op sys was eaten by a virus before Christmas and the local shop wanted more than I have to reload XP, the backed up data and get me going again. They did say the hard drive was functional and fine. I found instructions on getting rid of all existing partitions before reinstalling XP, and have come down to the end of the installation and stuck with the error msg above.

I've read through J Barnett's instructions to load Windows onto a SATA drive at one of the links provided at the Setup cannot continue thread, and other info at other links there; I will go back through the installation and stop at the prompt to press F6 and install SCSI or RAID drivers. But I'm not completely clear on how to find the drivers on the cd's I have. I've opened up the case, made sure cable connection is tight at drive and board, and now know I have a WD400 Caviar drive - that came with the Dell.

Have been to Western Digital site to look for drivers for my model number and found specs and jumper settings for the 400BB, but the list of downloads is greek to me. There are two that mention IDE/RAID compatibility upgrade - one for 3Ware cards and one for Non-3Ware cards. Help??? I thought I just wanted plain ol' drivers.

We though nothing of it. a few hours later my wife attempted to use the CPU and found a blue screen with white txt on it. I look at it but could not read the message because the left margin was cut off. I didn't write it down either. I do remember the message stating that I should restart the CPU and if the problem was still there I should contact someone for help. I turned the CPU off and when I turned it back on the CPU made sounds we have never heard before. Beep, Beep, pause, Click. The beeps occured in a rapid succesion, then a pause, then a click. Theses noises repeat themself constantly as a white bar fills itself running from left to right at the bottom of a black screen. On that same screen the CPU showed Dell's insignia on it with the words "F2 = Setup F12 = Boot Menu" at the top. Then it goes to another black screen with white text showing the error message:
