Windows Update can't search for new updates: error 80072efd

Q: Windows Update can't search for new updates: error 80072efd

Hello -

I seem to be having a snowball effect of errors with my computer. It all started when I realized I couldn't find/install new Windows Updates. I hate to say it, but I went a year without installing new updates. I would always get the error code 80072efd. I tried following Microsoft's help and was able to download and install like 70 updates a few days ago. Since then, I have been unable to use Windows Updates again and am still receiving the same error. I don't want to post too many problems in this one post so I figured we'd just start with this one. Since it seems to be the start of all my computer problems anyway hopefully if I can fix this the other errors with get fixed as well.

BTW, I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, SP 1.

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Windows Update can't search for new updates: error 80072efd

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would check out this support documentation from Windows. From the sounds of it, the Windows servers are too busy, or an AV, or firewall program is preventing you from connecting. What AV or firewalls do you have installed, if any?http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...-error-80072efdIf you have already tried these solutions, we could use some more info. What service pack is already installed? What type of computer, etc.. When did you start having this problem? Can you connect to the Windows website? Can you connect to other websites? There is a problem upgrading to service pack 2 from Vista SP1 that I am aware of, but we need more info. The more information you can provide the better. With regards,bwest0703

My computer has been working properly until I got a update for the Windows Update software. After installing the update and Windows Update restarted I immediately received that error when trying to search for updates. I'm not even able to get to the part where I pick the updates, it just fails seconds after I press the button to search for updates.

After googling abit I found out that the error is somehow related to ones internet connection and firewall settings, but even after changing the internet connection and disabling antivirus/firewall I still won't get it to work.

Error: 80072EFD

Computer specifications:
AMD X2 4400+
MSI K9N Neo V2
4GB DDR2 800 MHz
Nvidia 8800GT

Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (Was not working before installing it either though)

Help appreciated!

A:Windows Update error 80072EFD

There is no update to the actual Windows Update service, I'm afraid. Error 80072EF means something is blocking Windows Update from accessing the update server, and this means the 'update' you downloaded was most likely a virus. I recommend installing Malwarebytes immediately. It is free and quite comprehensive in its ability to root out any harmful processes running on your system.

If you have any problems installing this or any other antiviral software, please let us know.

I've been recieving the error code recently while trying to update. Now, I've
read the support article that seems to be working for everyone, but not for
me. I've flushed the DNS, there were no hosts files to remove, and now I've
tried the command prompt (running in administrator mode as well). Yet, when
type in 'proxycfg-d' I get a message back that says 'proxycfg-d is not
recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch
file'. I've tried typing it different ways and no matter what, it gives me
the same message. I'm on Vista Home Premium and only behind Windows Firewall.

any other workaround for this?

Cant' update an x86 (vista) system. Keep getting the Code: 8007EFD, which basically says it is firewalled. The only firewall I know of is the Windows firewall. It also seems to be the only firewall that Windows security is aware of either. This happens whether or not the Windows firewall is turned on or not. Have tried the methods here: Windows Update error 80072efd - Windows Vista Help, and here: You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

I have tried it with all security off (Winpatrol, Spybot, Super anti Spyware, Avast, Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall), still no love. I have checked the coputer up and down for malware and viruses (it's a friends computer) and found and removed Internet AntiVirus, Win32 Adload.R and Video.exe. Have scanned with HJT, SAS, Malawarebytes Anti Malware (mbam), Combofix and GMER. Everything is up to date except of course MBAM, which just released version 1.37 this morning, and I haven't turned that computer on since 4 am (US, EST).

Any suggestions?

Hope you are well this fine weekend!

I have been in state of combat with my Windows 7 Home edition's inability to search for updates for around 3 months ! We're talking error 80072EFD.....so far I've:

Cleaned the registry (Reg Cure)
Completely and fully uninstalled Mcafee (using their own uninstall tool), and my antispyware program (re-installed now though AVG instead of Mcafee)
Disabled the firewall / altered site permissions
Run both available "Fix Windows Updates" tools
Checked for Malaware (Malabytes)
Ensured that I have the right settings in Component Services - there are no dependency issues

I'm at a loss how to solve this short of re-installing the OS - which would be a major pain as I have a number of big audio orientated programmes to reload.

Incidently, Windows Security Center Services has never been able to start either - I've disabled this; and my addition sound card (Creative X-FI notebook) works but stops working after about an hour (iTunes for example simply stops playing)....onboard IDT audio is fine.

I'm using a Dell Studio 1747, 4gb Ram machine pre-installed with Windows 7 Home bought in Jan 2010.....

i formated my pc, installed windows 7 build 6801, i used the crack "Windows 7 (All Versions) PlusPatcher_V5_Orbit30.exe" to activate windows and to be able to do updates because the official beta was not officially out.

windows update worked well, then i upgraded to build 7000 and i used an official valid product key to activate windows when asked just after the upgrade so windows update was activated with the windows genuine tool.

i started to have problems with windows update with the error 80007002 but i managed to make it work with the vista forums.

i updated to build 7057 and i am stuck with the error 80072EFD, i tried everything, i searched on everything i could find, (even translation of korean websites).

just to avoid certain typical answer that i found on forums, my msn windows live messenger has always been working well, i added the 3 windows update addresses to my firewall witch is KIS2009, and also to the file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt".

in "system properties", my windows is officially activated, could you please help me to find a way to be able to use windows update because i need it especially to use my bluetooth phone in order to download drivers, it tries to connect but fail.

i have used the troubleshooter of windows 7 for windows update but it does not find anything.

thank you for your forum and your time.
sincerlly yours,

I have not been able to run Windows Update for 2 months. I have gone to this forum and to many others and have tried all the suggestions. I have three Windows 7 Professional systems. Two update automatically but this one does not. It fails and then gives the error code: 80072EFD. I've searched for it. Others have found it but when suggestions are made, none of them, that I could find, have helped. For example, I have turned off the Update Services, renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder but no joy.

I'm running Vista Home Premium. Toshiba had to fix my corrupted motherboard, and since then , I can't update Vista most of the time. On automatic update, about 1/3 of the updates are downloaded and the rest say "failed". On maqnual download attempts, I get an error message, error 80072EFD. I've tried to fix this in many ways, including deleting the temp update file, etc. as per posts elsewhere, to no avail. Toshiba and Microsoft support have been non-supportive. I paid Reg-Cure $30.- for software to fix this, and it did not fix it. I'm concerned about running with important updates absent. Does anyone have a clue as to how I can fix this? I just completely reformatted my computer after a suspected malware attack.
The first thing I tried after reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition was to run windows update. I received the error code 80072EFD. This is before I installed any software, firewalls, or antivirus programs. I also get this same error when trying to activate windows or office, or when trying to set up Microsoft media center.

I do have internet connection. Both firefox and internet explorer work perfectly fine.

I have been in contact with microsoft, but nothing has worked so far. I thought I would see if anyone here had any ideas.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have already done. Please read through these before posting as you can see I have already tried a lot of things!

2. Restarting the computer
3. Adding windows update websites to the internet explorer exceptions list: http://*.update.microsoft.com https://*.update.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com Microsoft Support http://update.microsoft.com https://update.microsoft.com
4. Verifying internet connectivity (internet works fine)
5. Tried it with Windows firewall on and off. No other firewalls are installed.
6. I tried this before any anti-virus was installed. I have since installed AVG free and tried again both with it running and disabled

In late December (after 17th),  Action Center for Windows Updates on my PC said I had more updates than the ones I already received.  I could not download them.  So, I ran the windows diagnostic for Windows Update issues.  It says it's unable to fix, because of the error I listed in my topic title.  I've had no problems with updates before.  I use Avast IT Security,so I ran an additional complete scan.  Clean.  I ran a Malwarebytes (free) and same thing.  I did receive updates on 9 December and 1 Security update on the 17 December.   Can anyone help me out or send me to a topic thread for this problem?
Thanks ahead of time for anyone who might be able to help me out.

Hello, i would recommend you using Microsoft Security Essentials as a anti-virus/anti-spyware program, i have found the MSE to be very good. I also would suggest running free of Malwarebytes , follow this site for complete instructions of how to use. How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer
Get MSE here : Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials
Once you have used these to scan , post back results and we will go from there to see about these update issues please.

Hi all.
I am trying to update multiple Windows 7 64 bit systems in a Domain environment and keep getting error code 80072EFD. This only happens when the PC's are connected to the Domain. I brought one of the systems home and it updated no problem so I know it is not the anti-virus(Symantec Endpoint 11.5 for 64 bit systems) or the Windows Firewall.
I have added the update sites as suggested by Microsoft to the firewall and have tried doing updates with the firewall and Endpoint disabled, no luck.
I also tried it after uninstalling Endpoint, same results.
These are new Dell PC's right out of the box, I removed the resident anti-virus programs and installed Endpoint. I have done this many times in the same Domain for XP systems without any headaches so I am pretty sure it is a Windows 7 64 bit issue.
Even though they are new systems I ran MalwareBytes on them just to make sure there was nothing hinky on them from Dell, nothing found.
Do any of you tech gurus have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A:Windows update error 80072EFD running 7 64 bit on domain only

That sounds like it's a problem with the network, rather than the PC.
Check the network firewall settings - WU for Win7 uses a slightly different mechanism to AU/WU for XP and different ports may need to be opened for traffic.

firewall rules
You'll need both Windows Updates and BITS enabled.

Hi Everyone,

I am running a Domain from a Windows 2008 R2 Server. At the moment Windows Updates are not working on the Server, or the corresponding clients.

On the Server I see the following error message -

Notice above that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as never, as is the "Updates were installed".

I don't honestly believe that updates have never worked on the Server despite what is shown above.

From one of my Windows 7 client computers I see the following -

Notice in this instance that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as the 23/04/2013, and "Updates were installed", is listed as 10/04/2013.

I tried the "Answer" shown in this link -

Windows Update Error 80072efd

After resetting the Proxy settings on the Server I saw the following -

Furthermore I have tweaked various Group Policy settings related to updates and there has been no improvement.

There is no 3rd party Firewall on either my Server or the Clients, so there is nothing to configure on this front.

Finally when setting up new clients they are able to install updates on my network whilst they are not Domain members. However as soon as the new client becomes a Domain member it gets the infamous Error 80072efd message.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

I've been doing Windows Fix it, and some other stuff that I can find online but none worked. I did clean boot and disabling the Anti Virus (Kaspersky), it didn't solve the problem. I have also tried restoring the system back to the last time the update was working normally. Still, every time I click check for update, it always produce the red sign with the message:

I am having a problem with windows update. It will not search for any updates, whenever I try to get it to search for updates it finds an error code 80070422. I have tried microsoft fixit tool and the report says Repair default Windows Update locations Not Run. I am thinking maybe resetting windows update locations could help, but I don't know how to do that manually. I have also tried restarting services required by windows update, which did nothing. I also scanned for viruses. Any help would be appreciated.

I have read lots of threads by people with the same problems, and sadly I need the same sort of fix. I have run the fix-it tool and the System Readiness fix to no avail. Examining the files listed in the checksur.log reveals they are empty, with binary zeros.

I have attached my checksur.log file for your viewing pleasure.

Many thanks in advance for any help rendered.

Hi. I have a strange problem. I select the option to search updates automatically, but I must start the search manually. Furthermore, windows updates starts but it does not stop more. I used a tool by Microsoft to fix the problem. According to it, my problem was solved. Nevertheless, the situation is the same. What can I do? Thanks and best,                                                                                                            davide

So, I started off at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/590109/windows-update-stuck-at-0-downloading/ but have been directed here as my problem is no long er malware related. The problem is, I've been trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I do not have the reserve a copy icon on my taskbar. I found this was due to some uninstalled updates from windows update. Previously my update bar was stuck at 0% progress, but this was fixed. Now when I launch windows update I get the message "Install new Windows update software" i click install now and the program closes and relaunches and displays the error message "Windows could not search for new updates. Error code 800F081F". I click try again and the message "Install new Windows update software" appears again. Basically i can keep following the instructions and loop around continuously.
I've tried a Sfc scan with a result of no integral violations
Any help will be appreciated

I tried several times to install windows 7 x64 but every time I stay locked .... I can only come to the first update of service pack 1.

Using a windows 7 cd containing the service pack already one, once the installation is complete I can't check for updates. if I install a version without the first service pack, i can install the updates, but when I install the service pack 1 I no longer find updates....

Windows is in loop on "Searching updates...."

(can't find help on google, i tried all the hotfixes that I found.)

Hi there,

i have a really weird problem on my 7 here. Windows does not look for updates from time to time as it should. The settings for WU are correct, in fact, i tried all of them with no change in behaviour.
When i start a manual search everything is fine, finding and installing updates works like a charme. Nothing special in my windows logs, the whole systems runs just fine.

Anything i could do?

A:Windows Update doesnt search for updates

Well, after microsofts last patchday and a successful installation of all those, windows searches for updates again. Just to let you know.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1, on a Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop.

On 11th May Windows tried to download updates but something went wrong, laptop froze for over an hour and didn't respond - so I held the power button and forced restart. I thought updates had failed but when I turned the laptop back on it said it was finishing installing updates.

However when I logged back in the popup in system tray said updates were available, but would just search endlessly without finding anything.

I ran Windows update diagnostic tool, at first it kept finding error 0x80070057 and 80070005, and "Service registration is missing or corrupt". The diagnostic tool said fixed each time but when i re-ran the tool the same errors were reported and it still won't update.

I tried to use system restore but strangely I only had 1 restore point - 11th May when the updates failed - i have never seen this before how can all my previous restore points be deleted? I restored to 11th May but Windows update is still the same not working.

I have tried the following:

Manually resetting windows update components using the Microsoft article.
Running sfc /scannow (no problems found).
Running extended chkdisk with both options ticked.
Microsoft fixit 50123.

I have also ran the Microsoft Fixit 50202 in both normal and aggressive mode several times.

I am still getting the windows 10 update icon in the system tray. But I'm reluctant to try and upgrade until Windows 7 is fixed in ca... Read more

I am attempting to install a fresh Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 (Retail) virtual machine. When switching to Audit Mode to attempt to install drivers and updates before setting up the final users (the way I normally do), I find that Windows update gets stuck forever (apparently) at "Checking for Updates..." after the single update to the new Windows Update. I have also tried this without going through the Audit Mode on a separate fresh install, I had the exact same issue, so I do not believe that was the cause.

I have an Inspiron 1420 Windows Home 32.
When using Windows update I'm getting error 80072EFD. This is new. My computer was working fine before.
I checked for solutions at Microsoft site but nothing seemed to work. This is what I have tried:
1. Firewall exceptions
2. Internet optinos Allow sites

I talked to a Dell agent. I was almost 2 hours with him, but he could not solve the problem.
I have a new router Netgear. Not sure if this is the cause of the problem.
Model: RangeMax(TM) Wireless Router

I'm not a computer expert, so I need your help.

Thanks a lot.

I have 2 laptops with the identical issue. I am trying to work on one before fixing the other.
I have been working with another Bleeping Computer tech, and he referred me to this forum.
the above thread is the last communication that we have had on the topic. My problem is this: Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates.    At one time, I did an ESET Online Scanner scan and came up with a virus. The virus was cleaned, but I still have the issue with not getting Windows Updates. This one laptop in particular, the issue started when I had Vista on there. I had since erased the hard drive in a 3-swipe process, and I did this 3 times. After the first time, I used Win 7 on there instead of Vista. The problem still persists. Can you help me with this issue? Thank you.

A:Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates

I would say if the system has been checked by others as per your last original post and stated clean.
Then i see you say that Windows Update - stalls ? ... { You could check Task Manager - Running Tasks - and if WU is running ok.
Does this mean the PC is unresponsive or just Updates taking to long ? { No % Increase }.
I have had PCs take over 10 hours to process and then download.
Hopefully all your Services are still correctly Set ? , i would run the Windows Update over night , the longer the better , and see if it can actually complete.
This has been an issue for quite sometime after intro of Win10 , and for Win 7 machines to be last inline and  ess of a priorty over 10.

I cannot update Windows at all and it keeps coming up with this error "code 80072EFD".  I have tried all the solutions that I have found on Microsoft and on other support sites (checking that the update sites are allowed, stopping my antivirus and trying to update, stopping my firewall and trying etc etc) and nothing is working.  Any help with this will be much appreciated. Thanks PS - I am on an Acer Aspire notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium.

My Windows 7 Pro sp1 machine has been unable to run windows update or update Microsoft Security Essentials (which I have now removed) since the end of October. Strangely, on a re-install of Security Essentials, it can do the initial update and get the current virus definitions, but subsequent updates fail with the 0x80072efd error. Windows Update also fails with a 80072efd error (presumably the "0x" that MSE adds to the error code is not meaningful).

Quicken is also now unable to connect to any of my financial services providers--which has me very nervous. Quicken gives me an OL-297a error.

I've run the following:
ESET scans: initial scans found a couple of trojans (trojandropper.vb.gwztjvb was one of them--but I couldn't even find a reference to that trojan via google), but unfortunately I didn't right down the details of the other and don't know where to find any logs / history. ESET no longer finds anything.

SuperAntiSpyware: scan finds tracking cookies, but nothing more

Windows Security Essentials: initially found a trojan several days ago (sorry to say I don't know which one or where to find the logs, but a different one than ESET found), but last time I ran it it found nothing.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor: on attempt to install for their free scan, I get the following: "Error Message A Network error has occurred. Check your Internet connection and/or proxy settings and click "Retry" to continue."

I've been having this problem for two days now. I've done practically everything in this page : http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&q=80072efd+live+messenger&btnG=Search&meta= but none seemed to work. the messenger did work once after I checked the "Automatically detect settings..." in LAN settings in Internet Explorer. But after that, the old problem came back again.

Here is a the problem:

1. It says,

We can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger

There might be a problem with your Internet connection. Make sure...bla bla...

Error code:80072efd

2. I used the troubleshooter and when it reached Key Ports,

It says:

Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall settings through Windows Live Messenger Options. For Firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions.

Click on the repair..blabla.

3. So, I checked my firewall and Windows Live was allowed access so there was no prob with it. I also disabled my firewall but still got this error. So, I went into the Connections tab in windows Live options and I opened the troubleshooting log.

This is the content:

When I try to do the windows updates, is gives a red error box saying windows could not search for updates. I have clicked on the blue link - get help with this error. I have stopped the update service, deleted temporary update files, restarted the windows update service, installed the system update readiness tool, clicked on the fix it....everything they say to do and it still won't do the updates.

Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated. I have spent my entire day trying to get it fixed.

I have also tried to do an update in safe mode but can't get the computer to connect to my network. Get local only when running in safe mode with networking.
