No ethernet or wireless suddenly!

Q: No ethernet or wireless suddenly!

Hello,

I am having real issues with both wired and wireless connections. Basically, I don?t have either all of a sudden. One day my system was fine, the next nothing. I have searched and carried out all the obvious and non-obvious ideas but have got nowhere. I have even been out and bought a new Netgear WNDA3100v2 and NIC. Everything is recognised by Windows but will not connect to the internet. Please can anyone help. I suspect and fear that it is a Windows problem and that I will have to reload the OS. (Win7 64bit)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For the past year and a half, I've been using a Netgear N300 Wireless USB Adapter to connect my home-built computer (with Windows 7) to the wifi from the router on the floor directly below me, and it's worked just fine. But lately, for the past couple of weeks, often when I get up in the morning, my little networking icon in my system tray has insisted that there are no available connections, or that it can't find any because my ethernet cable is unplugged. I don't even HAVE an ethernet cable on this computer, and I haven't ever.

I have also noticed that it seems to have this problem during the daylight hours. No matter how many times I restart my computer or reset my adapter or physically go downstairs to make sure Dad hasn't bumped a wire, Dad's computer remains perfectly connected and functional while mine mostly just frustrates me. I get a pretty regular inflow of newsletters from various places, and when I wake up in the afternoon and my internet is down, my Gmail shows no new messages any later than 11 AM, and when my computer is magically able to detect a signal again and autoconnects, this magic seems to happen at around 10, 11 PM.

As an experiment, I plugged my old 2005 Presario (with WinXP) back in and hooked the adapter up to it, and it couldn't connect either. So I was sure it was the adapter so I went out and bought a new one, of the exact same model as my old one. And I'm still having this problem.

Ive been using my Sony Vaio laptop (windows 7) to connect to my uni halls internet connection by ethernet cable (and keysurf login) for months with no problems, now all of a sudden my ethernet cable is not being recognised. its not a problem with my connection or cable as other people's laptops work on it. and its not a problem with my hardware as my laptop works in other people's rooms. its just the combination of my laptop and my connection.

my friend did something along the lines of resetting the IP address, but not really sure what he did.
so i've done a full recovery of my computer, and this hasn't helped! don't know what else to try!
please please help, i've been internet-less for a couple of weeks and i'm ging a bit nuts.
oh and im not the most techy person in the world, so please keep it simple.

thank you lovely internet people!

Welcome to TSG:
I think my first suggestion would be to contact your uni's IT/Tech support folks and see if some settings tweeking might be in order for your pc.They can at least perhaps tell you if they see your attempted connection at all.Might be a good first start.
FYI:I think a full recovery may have been a bit of over kill.

Hello. I have wi fi in my home that is running fine. My phone etc is getting about 13 mbps for downloading and 1.4 for uploading which is normal for me. My desktop however had a virus issue and I had to take it to be repaired. It is repaired and I brought it home and hooked it up EXACTLY as it was before I took it to be repaired. It is hardwired directly to modem but it is only getting about 2 mbps downloading and .44 uploading. I called my internet provider and they tried to help but said everything looks good on their end and that it was a computer issue. The shop that repaired it is closed today and I am in the middle of a deadline and I NEED this fixed. it is an ACER computer so I called their helpline but because it is out of warranty they wanted me to pay $100 for them to tell me how to fix it. He suggested it was a setting on the computer that needed changed but I have been looking for HOURS and can not find the solution...PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi folks. I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix this.

My Windows 10 desktop is on a college dorm's wired connection. It was working 100% fine yesterday morning. When I get home from work hours later, it's an unidentified network with no internet connection. I tried moving the cable into my roommate's Win10 laptop, and I get the same thing.

Of particular annoyance is that I can't get the wifi to work either. On any other device there are no problems (aside from the slow speed). I can hold a good minute or two of connection to the wifi with the desktop before I start getting "we can't reach this page" errors from Explorer.

The wifi's not really reliable anyway... I'd just like to be able to submit my paper by Sunday evening when it's due. Any ideas? Particularly for an ethernet fix? A month ago when I called the dorm's tech support, it was about the wifi; my wall socket wasn't opened up to their network. They couldn't fix it, so I asked them to open up the Ethernet as a patch fix. It's been great until now.

Wow, that's odd indeed! Do you see them in Device Manager? If not, try and do a search for new hardware. Also, if your familiar with navigating the BIOS, make sure those devices didn't get disabled somehow. You may even want to try unplugging those devices, and adding them back to the system one at a time.

I want to make this wireless since I bought a new macbook and was wondering if this product would do it? http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006PYGWG6

I don't know much about it but I was concerned because the Router Mode says 'cable connection only' and I'm not sure the connection is cable (is it ADSL?). Will I need anything else like a modem?

Any advice?

Wifi suddenly stopped working, works with Ethernet cable, works with iPad and iPhone, but not with Sony Vaio laptop wifi.

Have spent hours on the phone with Internet Service Provider, who went through all settings and checked everything (checked CMD prompts and changed SSID, created new channels, etc).

I'm using Windows 7 and have McAfee. What could have caused this to suddenly stop working? How do I get it to work again? I have checked my wifi is still on, it still connects to the wireless modem router (D-Link), and at start up has a yellow triangle with exclamation mark inside, then that disappears and says internet is connected (on internet bars icon) but no browsing is possible at all with any of my browsers (chrome, Firefox, explorer).

Have disabled McAfee firewall, have restarted in safe mode, but nothing is helping.

Have tried on different wifi connections, with same problem. I restored to the last date I could use wifi and it didn't change anything.... Help please!

I have a Dell Studio 17 with Vista and Wifi capability. I've had the computer for a year and a half, and I've never had a major problem with wireless connection before. Any problem has been purely because of a low connection strength or because I was in a classroom (I'm a college student) in which multiple people were trying to connect at once. Eventually it always worked.

I was home for the weekend and connected to my primary wireless connection and all of a sudden I lost connection and could not reconnect.

I tried restarting and shutting off both the computer and wireless router. I tried resetting the wireless router. I tried turning on and off the Wifi button on my computer. Still cannot connect.

I plugged in an ethernet cable into my internet directly from the router and it runs fine (that is how I am on the internet on my laptop at the moment).

I will not always have access to an ethernet cable when I go back to school later today and I have a project I need to research so I'm kind of in a rush to get this figured out. Also it's just so much easier connecting wireless and obviously I'd like this fixed.

Anyway, I read up on other people's similar problem and I don't know if I changed something or messed up, but now whenever i click to view Wireless Connections the router for my house has a red x next to it and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."

Hello everyone! So just recently I started experiencing a problem where I couldn't connect to the internet and when I would click on the little ethernet connection icon it would say "unidentified network". Upon trouble shooting it through windows' included troubleshooter, it came up with "troubleshooter cannot find the problem". So I began trying to figure out the problem myself.
Before I get too ahead of myself here are my system specs:
CPU: i7-2600 (non K)
GPU: EVGA GTX770 SC 2GB
MOBO: Dell Specific (XPS 8300)
RAM: 12 GB no name

Before going further I'd like to point out that my rig is a frankenstein build beginning its life as a dell XPS 8300, thus I don't know the exact type of motherboard or RAM.
Anyway, I would consider myself normally pretty tech savvy, as I built my own rig and have done pretty much everything with it on my own. Here are all the fixes I've tried thus far (In no particular order) to no avail:

Ok, I have had a look at other posts that seem to have the same problem as me, and I did try to do the IPCONFIG/ALL thing first before posting, but couldnt find the computers ip address or any of the other needed info in what came up after I did that so I couldnt progress further. We have a netgear router with sky, which I have no problems with for well over a year now, and since tuesday I havnt really been able to connect. My mums laptop works fine with it still, she has no problems at all. I have tried restarting my laptop, doing a virus check, a disk cleanup and defrag, a system restore to a day before it stopped working, taking the sky wireless off my list of networks and reconnecting where I put in the security key. Also have restarted the netgear a few times. Sometimes when I open the networks box my wireless cant find any networks then will find mine and the others in my area, and then suddenly not find any again. And sometimes it will connect of its own accord, but within a minute or 2 will disconnect again. It never connects to the wireless if I open the networks window and click to connect to sky. I have a hp compaq presario v6000 running vista. Is there anything I can do to try and fix this, bearing in mind im not particularly technology minded. Thankyou.

Your internet speed is determined by your provider and the package you have, it is irrelevant how fast your connection to router is as long as it is at least a little faster than speed to the provider. So you can not change the internet speed above what provider gives you.

Is there such a thing as a 5 Ghz Ethernet card, or is just 5 Ghz wireless?

A:Ethernet vs. wireless

No - 2.4/5 GHZ refer to the wireless frequency.

Ethernet comes in two speeds mostly - older 100 Mb/s (100 megabits) or more modern 1000 Mb/s (1 Gigabit). Of course, these are usually much faster than internet speeds even for slower 100 Mb/s unless you have amazingly fast broadband.

What i was thinking, was loosing the ethernet cord and turning this computer in to a wireless connection like the other two, but if i do will i loose speed? This computer currently gets between 700-950 kbps., depending on traffic.

That probably means that they want to restrict usage to one computer per connection and do not want wireless networks set up. So, please check with the IT department before doing anything, as it's not very hard for them to detect violations.

On the assumption that you will not attempt this unless it falls within the rules, you can use a Wireless Access Point (WAP). Use encryption, preferably WPA2-PSK, AES, but at least WPA-PSK, TKIP. Use a passphrase that cannot be guessed and does not include dictionary words.

A:ethernet and wireless together

If I am going to use ethernet for an extended time I remove an external wireless adapter or switch an integrated wireless off. But that's to extend the life of the unused component and to save the battery if on battery. If you are using a PCI wireless card with the desktop then disabling it is probably the best you can do. But that is not going to impact your ethernet usage, so it is really your choice.

Please show the following for when you have an ethernet connection and for when it has dropped ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 4 port wireless broadband router with 2 x wireless laptops that can see each other and share files fine. I also have a PC which is hardwired to the router. All 3 machines have an IP address from the range I configured and all 3 machines can access the internet. The problem I'm having is that my hardwired PC cannot see the workgroup I have set up so therefore it can't see the 2 wireless laptops. The 2 wireless laptops can see the hardwired PC but cannot connect to it to view the shared folders.

I have switched all firewalls off, changed lots of config in the router, reset it to default, rebuilt my hardwired PC, pulled out some hair, changed network settings all over the place but just cannot get the hardwired PC to see the workgroup.

Any suggestions anyone ! !

A:! ! ! ! ! Ethernet Can't See Wireless ! ! ! ! !

Well, as long as all three are getting DHCP addresses from the same network, then the router isn't to blame, so, get it configured and leave it alone.

You say you've setup a workgroup for the laptops. That desktop machine also needs to be a part of that same workgroup. Then, you need to have the same username and password combination on the three machines, and then the desktop should be able to share files with the laptops.

And you definitely want the firewalls disabled until you get things working.

Here's something that is causing massive loss of hair.....

My PC is connected to my router with a wireless card. I also connect my PS2 to my PC using an ethernet connection (the ps2 is "modified" and I use this connection to play music and video thru the ps2 to the TV).

Everything works fine with one exception. It seems like the wireless is not getting a DNS. To obtain one, I have to disable the ethernet card, connect to my AP, then enable the card. If I lose my connect with the AP (which happens sometimes, it's on the other side of the house and the signal is a little weak), then when it reconnects I have to do the whole disable/enable thing.

It's not a huge deal, but I do like my stuff to work properly and usually things like this are not problem for me, but this one really has me wondering. Anyone have any ideas?

Here's my ipconfig /all if that helps. What's odd is the ipconfig is *exactly* the same when I can connect and when I can't. So maybe it's not a DNS issue, but something else. But I am unable to connect to any web sites until I disable and re-enable the ethernet card.

Hi everyone

I dont really know whether this is really relevent, but I was just wondering. If I have both ethernet cable and wireless on one computer as 2 networks. Can I join up both of them to increase my internet speed or somthing. I tested both of them seperately and the ethernet cable was much faster than the wireless. My router is next to my computer. Can I have some tips. I will be putting some screenshots later.

Thanks in advance

A little confusion here - When I log onto my Verizon router page (that 198.xxx thing), I show many menus but the following 2 have me a little confused. One says "network connection" type is: Ethernet - I do have a yellow cable coming out of my Actiontec router to the pc so I get that. Another menu says "wireless settings" and this says "wireless" which I have set to WPA and the mode is 802.11g "only". Is this system wireless or ethernet or both? I would like to do the pc to tv connection for netflix movies at some point.. Am I all set with this configuration? (knowing I have to buy a box of some sort, Roku or Apple or something) and if I do have a wireless connection, can I connect the two without cables running from one to another? Hope that is all clear. Thanks in advance.

A:Ethernet or wireless?

Is this system wireless or ethernet or bothClick to expand...

both

you have a wireless router - and so you can connect to the router with a cable as you currenty are doing and other devices PCs etc or your PC can also connect with wireless
I would like to do the pc to tv connection for netflix movies at some point..Click to expand...

someone else will need to answer the netflix service

from what I can see on the website
http://www.netflix.com/HowItWorks#faq1
you can watch via a PC

http://www.netflix.com/HowItWorks#faq1
Can I also watch instantly on my PC or Mac?

Yes. Simply press Play on any TV episode or movie to instantly watch it online on your Internet-connected PC or Mac.Click to expand...

so you can watch directly on your PC without any other device - and then if you have your PC video output connected to the TV you should be able to watch on TV via PC

whats the make and model of TV
- what outputs do you have on the PC video card ?
- what inputs do you have on the TV

if you have HDMI on both - then you should be able to use that - although for some copyright materials you will only be able to display on the TV and not two monitors

Hi there,
I'm having troubles with our new router. I can connect via ethernet but not through wireless. I'm certain it's an issue with my laptop, as I've managed to connect several other devices without any problems. Any help would be appreciated as I've tried everything I can think of.

Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007
Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

If you post a reply here with the Make and EXACT model of your PC, along with the windows version you are running. we will see if we can find a link to the driver and will post a reply with the link here.

--- 3) On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved t... Read more

Average user here, so I'm sorry in advance for not knowing terms I should be using. My laptop is an EeePC, with Windows XP. I have McAfee 8.7i, Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, Comodo Firewall and Threatfire.

My wireless connection is automatic. I was working when I noticed that the wireless was turned off (red X on the lower right of the little icon on the blue bar with the Start button), but it was on when I checked (I work in another room). I tried manually connecting several times, but nothing happened. Thinking that it was the wireless that had the problem and not my laptop, I tested it out on another PC in the house. It worked. I tried connecting manually over and over, turned the wireless off and turned it on again more than once, which didn't do anything. I restarted the laptop and it was fine again, but I'm keeping an eye out for any disappearing connections.

What could have caused this? Help, anyone?

A:Wireless died suddenly, help

Quite the mystery!!!

If your card was disabled or not working it wouldn't show up with this much information in the ipconfig /all report.

It also looks like you're on Windows Vista of some sorts since your home path is: C:\Users

Your Wireless card's network stack is also working. It's assigning itself an Automatic Private IP Address. (APIPA) That's the weird little address that you get starting with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx in the IPv4 Address line. Usually to me, it means that you computer tried to ask the network for an address but nothing was configured to respond to it. So it gave itself an address - which is mostly useless in this case.

I think, maybe, could you try to disable any firewall settings? (Just turn your firewall(s) to Off and test again to see if the problem went away.) If it goes away, then you know that some rule in the firewall is doing this to you. Do you have Symantec Anti-virus installed? Because I've seen that come with a firewall that screws up a computer on more than one occasion. It wouldn't be the right way to configure a firewall, but it might be blocking the broadcast responses.

I've had an HP Pavillion dv4-2045-dx with Win 7 for about three days. Today I was not able to connect to my wireless network. Ran the diagnostic (Windows gave up), rebooted computers, router, etc. with no results. It gives me networks to connect to and will connect to a neighbors unsecured one, but not mine. This seemed to happen after a Malwarebytes scan when I removed some items, all of which appeared to be malware. Wireless switch is blue (on). Tried a system restore to no effect. This is a Belkin router, and my sons laptop is getting internet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, I am a complete novice and therefore have no idea how to fix this (but I'm hoping it's something absurdly simple which I am just too ignorant to fix!)
I've been using an old Dell Latitude C600 laptop with XP and a Belkin 802.11g Wirless card. I've been connected to the internet fine for over a year when suddenly, last week, I started getting the message for "View available networks" "No Wireless networks were found in range - Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on."

A friend came round with a laptop just to confirm that there still ARE several networks within range, and she connected no problem. But I have been unable to work out what has gone wrong with mine. Weirdly, in tinkering about, at one point I could briefly see several networks (but not the one I need to connect to), but now I am back to zero again.

The Device Manager says the Belkin card is working fine but if I click on the Belkin card it just says "Scanning" and has no data or statistics.

I have tried FN F2 which some forums suggest is a wireless switch for my laptop but this does nothing. There is no manual switch on the Dell C600. I have also switching on and off the Wireless Zero thing (which other forums suggest) but nothing changes.

The network diagnostic says
Wireless - Service disabled
Wireless - User SSID
action User input required:Specify network name or SSID
Wireless - Radio off
action Manual repair: Turn radio switch on

Hi everyone.
Since yesterday both my home PC and my work laptop (both completely independant of each other in different cities and both running Windows 7) have the same wireless problem: they can't automatically connect to their usual respective routers and when you bring up the wireless networks menu it displays all the available normal networks but freezes for 2 seconds then says "no connections available". I can't click on my network as it is frozen when it brings up the menu. This has suddenly happened to two independant machines on two separate networks on the same day after months of working fine and connecting to the internet automatically from startup. This leads me to believe it is due to a Microsoft automatic update possibly. Does anyone else have this problem all of a sudden?

Thanks,
Nick

I have an Acer Aspire 7552G laptop running Windows 7 x64 that is having problems with connecting to the internet.

I started to notice the wireless and LAN connections becoming very weak, web pages would load slower, data would take longer to download, etc. This lasted for a couple weeks. As of now, I cannot get any signal, neither wireless nor LAN.

I normally use Google Chrome but have tried to connect through multiple browsers.

I have tried updating the wireless/ethernet drivers, and I have also tried uninstalling them all together and reinstalling them. Both to no avail. I have no idea how to resolve this issue and am hoping the tech pros here can help me out!

Wireless LAN and LAN vendors are both Broadcom and the drivers can be found here: Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook / Aspire / Aspire 7552G

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

Just a simple question. My apartment complex has installed wireless ethernet. My desktop computer has a 10/100 ethernet card installed, but I suppose I need to purchase a wireless card. What am I looking at as far as installation? Does it slide into a slot, or would somebody who's never opened his chassis before be better of getting pro help?

The ones I have seen advertized just plug into the ethernet jack on the back of the computer....I dont have one but my best guess is check with the manager of the apartment complex to ensure you get one that matches their frequency.

Hi,

My problem has been going on roughly since i aquired the laptop but im sure that it isn't a hardware fault as it is both the ethernet and wireless adapter having problems.

My ethernet will disconnect usually once or twice a day usually an hour after the laptop has been turned on. After that it won't disconnect again.
The wireless internet will disconnect more often and it is random as to when it will happen.

The disconnection happens like this,
Unable to browse the web using any internet browser like firefox or internet explorer
Any online game i play kicks me from the server to a login screen (if the game has one)
However, the laptop still shows a stable connection to the ethernet/wireless. It will show the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark for a second then show a stabe connection.

Laptop Specs;

Windows 7 64-bit
AMD Athlon II Dual-core M320 2.1 GHz
4GB RAM
Wireless Adapter - Atheros AR9285
Ethernet Adapter - Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

So far i have tried;

Updating all devices,
Uninstalled the devices and re-installed,
Unistalled Anti-virus software,
Disabled Firewalls,
Changing Channels on the router,
Update Router firmware,
Reseting the router.

Hi all
Im not compleatly computer illeterate but basically if something goes wrong im buggered!

latest problem is that I was connect to orange broadband (live box) with numerous problems, the main one being that i could only connect using ethernet(?) after numerous phone calls they sent me to 192.168.1.1 or something to that effect and had me change a few things around and hey presto it worked.

problem is I then moved and am now trying to connect to my very unhelpful flatmates O2 wireless box ii. and am back to only being able to use a cable to connect. I tried the previous address that orange gave me but im guessing it only works for them as it wont even display the page now.

i'm pretty sure the problem isnt the O2 box as my flatmate and friends have no problems connecting and i cannot connect to any wireless networks (macdonalds WiFi included lol)

so where do i go from here?
