Display corruption

Q: Display corruption

Hi All,I suspect I know what the answer is going to be to this question, but I'll ask anyway in the hope there is something I've overlooked. I have an ENVY17-J005TX (Windows 10) that has a corrupt display. Connecting to an external display via HDMI works intermittantly, and if it does work it only seems to output once the laptop has booted into Windows. I can't get PreBIOS (Windows key +B) or BIOS to display on the external screen at all. Laptop screen displays a randomly flashing white screen which appears to have information, but it looks to be displaying ghosted images of that information which is so out of focus it's more of a fuzzy grey box. When it gets to the Windows login screen it is displaying an image the same colour as the login in screen on the external monitor, but again it looks to be displaying ghosted images of the User/Login prompt which is so out of focus it's more of a fuzzy grey box. On the occasions I have been able to get the external monitor to display the Windows login, only some of the keyboard works ('ENTER' mainly but their may be others). I have connected wireless keyboards, but they appear to work the same as the built-in keyboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.RegardsGav

Preferred Solution: Display corruption

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I previously posted this in the wrong forum section, apologises.

The line spacing between text seems to become compressed and tops and bottoms of lines are cut off.
What should I do to correct this?

Hey guys, I'm sure this has come up before and I tried searchin for a similar problem but cant really see much to get much info.
heres my problem.

I was working on a new map for Half-Life 2 like i have been doing for a while (so this probably has nothing to do with the problem but anyway) then I started getting display corruption on my screen while still working from the desktop (Hammer open, winamp running, the regular routine).

I fear this may be some kinda video card problem? lets see if i can explain the visual problem (cause now it seems i cant even use PaintShop to see if i can capture)

the lines are mostly verticle and flicker alot while i type right now, and when i move my mouse pointer around theres a black square where it should be sometimes.
sys specs are in the sig, and Mobo, BIOS and video card drivers are all upto date. btw vid drivers are Cat 4.11 but i was running the 4.9 cat when this started about an hour ago, updated to cat 4.11 and its all the same. video card fans are rollin all normal, with no funny noises or anything.

any help @ all will be great.. thnx ladies and gents.

I have an issue with Aero and Wallpapers when using the Ati Catalyst drivers from this year (all the 9.x version I tried). I have attached the screenshot of what happens to the desktop wallpaper.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

It only happens if you apply a theme that has multiple wallpapers that can change. If you use a theme that has only one background it doesn't happen. I have an ATI HD 2600 Pro AGP card.

I am currently using the Catalyst 9.9 driver. I also notice that the text in the top title bar of windows occasionally gets scrambled so that you can't read it.

One other item I have found, is that the built in HD 2600 Pro AGP driver labelled Microsoft Production WDM 1.1 makes the Fan on the card run constantly had top speed. Where as the ATI Catalyst driver doesn't have this bug, the fan runs on low speed unless the GPU is under high stress.

My thoughts is that possibly its to do with texture caching? I assume the Aero interface is using 3D mode of the card and that the multiple wallpapers are somehow using more of the card memory. Just an idea. Anyone know if this is a common bug and if there is a fix?

The Catalyst 8.12 driver doesn't have this issue, but its a lot slower then the 9.9 driver.

A:ATI Catalyst 9.x display corruption

ATI Catalyst 9.2 doesn't have this bug, but from 9.3 or later it happens. Someone in the AMD forum believes its a change with how Aero support is implemented in 9.3 and later.

The bug seems to affect both HD 2xxx and HD 3xxx AGP cards.

Here is my thread on the AMD site

This is a Radeon 9700 on a 3yr old Dell Desktop.

Corruption is intermittant, usually occuring on video game initiation or shortly after.

May persist through a reboot and begin with the Windows splash screen. Shutting down and alowing to cool seems to correct it.

I'm open to suggestions on what the source is. To me it appears the display adapter has lost horizontal sync.

Would reseating the card likely help this, or is the gpu itself damaged or has something in the card circuitry developed a bad contact?

Hey's all,.

This comp has a GF3 ti200 64mb card on it, drivers are DirectX 9.0c and the Forceware Drivers 66.93. This older system is running a few older games, i installed C&C Generals and Vice City on it and they run fine. Now my poblem is that in some other games that let's say 50% of all rendered poly's go beserk, they seem to flicker on and off or do not display at all. The attachement is an example of the problem in NFS Porsche. U can see in the sample pic the floor is missing, it pop's in and out of screen all the time. Same go for the parts of the car.

So, i tryed playing with the setting's of my vid's driver and directx.and reinstalling forceware drivers and DX9 also didnt help. Anyone got a solution or a bit of help im lost here and NFS.PU really rocks my world.

I have not tryed this though, downgrading DirectX...
I've heard that DX9.0c isnt *all that*. True? should i downgrade to DX9.0b or DX8?

A:GF3ti200 with oldergames display corruption

Ouch, that is some of nasty bug. You should have this installed...

Start with Microsoft DirectX 7.0 if possible then upgrade it to 8.1b (Maxminum stable available)
nVIDIA ForceWare v56.72

ALSO use ForceWare setting in windows, turn off both the Anti-alising and Astrophic setting. It is bad enough for your GF3 TI200. Have NFS.PU set the video setting in software if possible or set the all detail in medium.

It's never a good sign when your manufacturer is clueless...

The display corruption takes two forms: A flashing, flickering, of straight lines of various colors, that seems to be text related (Meaning, if there's more text displayed on the screen, the more rapid and violent the corruption), as well as textures being displayed as long poles or spears, shooting out from their proper place.

About a month ago, this was playable, and there wasn't much of a problem with crashes, or lock ups. With special thanks to my tinkering, I'm now very good at getting the machine to die...fast. I've been using World of Warcraft as my primary test, as the display corruption seems to occur only in D3D, and requires DirectX 9.0c. The crashes and lock ups occur with both OpenGL and Direct3D, however. It takes less than 3 minutes for that to occur with WoW.

My tinkerings included uninstalling and reinstalling of the various catalyst drivers, from 4.1 up to current 5.3, and the Omega drivers. I've reinstalled Win XP Pro, along with Directx 9.0c.

All and any help is appreciated.

Okay, so there's about a 50% chance when i start up my PC the display will get corrupted. its always at the same spot (After the windows loading logo, going into the user sign in options). what happens is the screen turns green with lines and you can see 3 windows logos in the back. nothing moves or changes. The PC doesn't Crash / Hang (Aside from the display that is). it continues to load up even though the display is shot. every time this has happened i wait for it to finish loading via HDD Lights. once the lights stop flickering i simply press the power button once and wait for it to shut down on it's own as if normal. Usually when i restart from the green screen the display works but the aspect ratio is off. the only way to fix this issue and to restart one more time. then it loads up perfectly fine. so pretty much Green screen (Pic1) > Restart > Aspect ratio off??(Pic2) > Restart#2 > Display is fine.

I've had this problem since first startup a couple years ago and Dell refused to give me a new videocard and then my warranty expired. It only happens when I play a game that runs OpenGL or DirectX. I get very uniform artifacts in either 3 or 4 sections running down my screen. I have updated drivers, I've reinstalled the drivers. I've also been looking around at corruption problems online for a while and have never seen one that looks like mine. Can anybody help?

and you can see it real good in this Flightsim pic.

A:Radeon 9800 Pro display corruption

Get a new videocard. 9800PRO's have countless problems, more than any other videocard I can name. Said problems usually take a few months to manifest, but once they occur, the card is pretty much useless. Just go buy a 7600GT AGP. It's better than a 9800PRO, and will not break like a 9800/9700.

Occasionally, without warning the display on my XPS13 L322X is corrputed and displays many short horizontal bars (see image). When this happens the PC becomes unresponsive and I have to shut it down by holding down the power key. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas what the cause could be?

A:XPS13 L322X display corruption (and crash)

It's either a bad display panel or  a bad GPU --  attach an external screen. If it shows clear, chances are it's the display that's bad.  If it doesn't, it's a bad GPU -- replace the mainboard.

Hi everyone.

I have a problem regarding desktop display settings. When the desktop resolution is set to 1024x768, everything is perfect. However, when I change the resolution to 800x600, everything is very bad quality such as text and images.

Here's a screenshot:

This corruption also affects fullscreen applications that run in a lower resolution than 1024x768. Is there something I'm missing? It seems strange that the computer wouldn't be able to render this resolution!

Any help is appreciated!

P.S. It's a laptop and the video card is "VIA/S3G UniChrome Graphics".

Hi everyone, I'm having a lot of strange things happening to me, hope somebody can help me.

A few days ago, I was playing a game and I started noticing artifacts on the screen. I was thinking my cards running hot so I gave it a break. But when I tried playing later, the artifacts were still there. Then the problem increased; I started to freeze in game for about 5 seconds, then my monitor would turn off, turn itself back on, then the game would resume. Wondering if it was specific to the game I tried a different one. Same thing happened there.

My next problem was my screen went black, saying it lost sync. After rebooting I had error messagew relating to my video card. It would not continue. I opened my case and changed the power cable to a different one on my power supply. Booted up, and everything seemed ok.

Thinking I had solved it, I start up my game again. Nope, still got artifacts, and the monitor turned off and back on again. Now I'm thinking it's definitely my video card is fried. So today I brought it in with my warranty, and got a brand new card.

But of course, I wouldnt be writing here if things went well after that , right? So yeah same issues, except after rebooting after the most recent error, my computer would not even get past the XP load up screen, it would just restart the boot process. I turned it off, and came back an hour later and tried booting again, and I'm up and running(for now).

I replaced my power supply about 3 months ago.... Read more

A:Strange random errors (display corruption, freezes)

What kind of display cards have you been using?

And can you post a screenshot of the problem?

Do they occur on bootup, in Safe Mode, or only under special circumstances, such as gaming and high cpu usage?

High temps or an inadequate power supply could certainly be a cause.

I'm going to move this to the hardware forum as it seems unlikely it is an "XP" issue.

I installed Vista RTM on my Compaq X1000 last night after finally getting my copy from work and everything works great except for some pretty serious display corruption (looks like it's trying to run too high of a refresh rate or a poor resolution.) The display is perfectly fine if I switch it to the generic VGA driver but I'm stuck at 800x600. ;)

I've tried the Mobility Radeon 9000 driver that came in through auto-updates as well as ATi's beat package. The ATi solution didn't work because the lowest Radeon they support is the 9600. :(

I've also tried a couple of versions of the Omega drivers which didn't help much. A coworker suggested a much older version then what I've tried but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

*edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the LCD on this unit runs 1280x800 natively but the closest Vista will go is 1280x768. I dunno if that's part of the problem as well, but it seems to persist at other resolutions anyways.

Up untill today my PC has been working a-ok. I first encountered the problem when i was palying a online mmo. After a couple of hours playing i entered a world and some graphical corruption occured where green pixels seem to appear in bands where the lighter colours where. After a short while the pc locked up,with loads of green pixels appearing and the last split second of sound caught in a loop.Nothing worked, mouse keyboard, even the lights for numlock, scroll lock and capslock did not respond to the keys being pressed.it has happened almost every time i tried a game since then.

I rebooted my pc and it was fine untill i was loging into the pc,where more of the same graphical corruption occured, when i logged in after a short while the pc froze on my desktop and hr monitor lost signal.after a few seconds it came back on an a message appeqred in the corner by the toolbar saying Kernel driver 258.96 had failed but had been recovered, his happened a few times. Windows works perfect in safe mode and i updated the graphics card drivers to try and resolve this but it did not work,i am posting this off my iPod so pardon the bad spelling, will upload a picture or video tomorrow wih more info if needed.

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

A:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

I am new to this forum and have a new computer and a new W7 pro 64bit
When I initially turn on computer the screen displays an illustrated information title of the gigabyte mother board,, then goes to a black screen with white lettering that flashes on briefly and appears to list the components of the system.
Why I believe there could be some corruption is that a flight sim game Rise of Flight is refusing to load. When i go to the start it tells me -"connection to master server was temporaily lost. check internet connections" All other sites are working. This change in Windows display occurred about the same time access to the game was denied which is why I I feel some problem has arisen within W7

A:possible corruption of W7?

Do you initially see something like this:

Then (or now) something like this:

The 1st is Gigabytes Splash screen. The 2nd is the BIOS screen. Usually, if you disable the splash screen, you will see the BIOS loading screen (which I prefer).

For me it was either/or, are you saying you now see one, and then the other? I won't be able to test it, but it's possible the BIOS is taking longer to load now and so the splash screen ends before the BIOS screen (which loads "behind " it) is finished. Does the boot take longer now? Perhaps the BIOS is hanging while your PC searched for a device? You could have a device (HDD, Optical drive) issue.

If not, this may just be a coincidence and you just need to troubleshoot your game issue. I don't think the OS itself is "corrupted". Have a look here and see if you don't find some help:

I am a mac user and I own a site that has downloads available for purchase. They are zip files with psd's in them. I have two windows 7 clients who can download the entire file and unzip it and everything show up except the psd files.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to why this is happening.

A:zip corruption

Welcome Paigeypar to the windows 7 forums.

There is the possibility that the .psd files that you created are not compatible with the intel version of photoshop.
or, your zip program is only zipping up the fork files and not the data files. Not being a mac person, I do remember from my mac days that the mac uses two files to make a pair, one being the resource fork and one being the data fork. Most pc's ignore the resource fork and only use the data fork.

Hope this helps

fresh install of OS(Windows Vista) installed on 80 GB HD, and one of my 400 GB hard drives has crashed
what happened is that while i was downloading a file though firefox, firefox froze and could not be shut down(by task manager and by right clicking - close, and various other ways of trying to shut down the program) , so i reset the computer thought the start menu, now after a full re-install of the OS (vista ultimate) i have no access to the hard drive that has very super ulta important information, i've had a bad experience with data recovery programs that i still lost everything anyways, so i'm wondering if there is a way to rebuild the MFT with a free program so then i can access the hard drive in a whole, just like it was before the MFT got corrupt

the only things that were installed in the new OS were firefox, avast, and the raid drivers(that the crashed 400GB drive is NOT connected to)

I have a corrupted OE using version 6 IE, on an XP Home version machine. Both PC World and Microsoft said that I have to reinstall or download IE version 6 since OE is bundled with it. When I do that, I am told that I already have version 6, and it won't download, therefore correcting whatever is wrong with OE. My XP came preinstalled on my machine, so I have no specific XP disk to fix the problem. All I have is the standard restoration disk which restores the whole HD to the stone age. How do I fix the corruption in OE?

Re: Dell XPS, 2 gb ram, 160 gb hd, Intel Pentium 4A 3200 mz chip, running XP Pro SP2. I am having a series of problem that may or may not be related and would appreciate any help on these you can give.

First, The computer will not respond to keyboard commands in the boot source menu. But, the keyboard works fine once windows is running. I tried a USB board and the standard keyboard port; got the same result with both.

Second, the update download notification shield, microsoft puts in on the task bar while downloading, never gets beyond 9%. Auto update is turned on and my fire wall, sygate, has never gotten in the way before.

Third, the internet connection service that can be turned on or off in the Services window, is not there, neither is there a network icon in the Network Connections window. But, my satellite connection to hughes.net is running fine and my Belkin router is sending strong signals to my router.

Fourth, System Restore will not restore to a prior configuration whether it is one saved 20 minutes before or ten days earlier.

for starters ..backup everything you can't live without to CDs or DVDs...then scan with your anti virus and any spyware tools you have..post list of what you are using and what they find...have you installed any hardware or software recently.. what were you doing when you first noticed something was wrong...

I'm having massive corruption issues running windows 7 ult 64. It regularly fails to boot and gives random bsod messages (Memory Managment, dll errors etc.).
I recently RMA'd the HD after it showed errors on the HD diagnostic utility (even after a complete wipe ) I also RMA'd the motherboard but it didn't change anything. At this point I have my eye on the wireless card (Rosewill RNX-G300EX PCI card). My thought is that (either through driver or hw fault) its causing some corruption in downloaded files, namely system updates. I also regularly get errors trying to open zip and executable files.

I all of a sudden started getting messages about my DRM being corrupt when trying to use Rhapsody music subscription software. The software directed me to a microsoft web siite to upgrade windows components (see below). I then tried upgrading the Windows components from Microsoft web site, but the upgrade button is grayed out - don't know if this means no update available or means invalid windows. Working with their support, I was finally told my windows valid license key is corrupt (as in illegal copy - Not!). They washed their hands of me and said I had to contact Dell because they installed the OS. I do not really think it is a license key issue, but I am still trying to resolve the DRM problem.

Working on:
Dell B110
DE051 Celeron D
Almost 800MB Ram
DVD/CDRW+- drive

User complained about Computer slowdowns and crashes when left alone.
I turned off startup programs and power options to always on with no screensaver.

They said they were using malwarebytes antimalware, so I did a quickscan to reporduce the results of the crash to get more info.

1hr 30min later the scan was in the Huiristics portion of the scan.

The user then used the bathroom and turned on the heater, turning on the waterpump and hitting the main breaker killing power to the computer.

Now 1 sec into windows booting "normally" it BSOD with:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disc defragmentation or backup

Safemode does the same thing.
I dont have a cable onhand attach their HDD to my laptop and run CHKDSK,
So I try a boot from a windows install disc intending to repair. Either the disc was scratched or the drive would not work on the CDR, but my drive at home plays it fine. Im thinking of going to install from USB or get a cable to CHKDSK from my laptop.

Im starting to think Im over my head, and am taking too long to finish.
Any help is appreciated.

A:possible OS corruption

You are headed in the right direction
0x24 indictes the NTFS file system and chkdsk /r should help.

I dont suppose that you can get to a command prompt?

As long as the bios is set to boot from the cd
I would try a few more times.
I have seen it take 6-7 tries before it will "hook up"

If the computer supports booting from a usb device that would be good.
If not you may need to hook it to your laptop to run chkdsk.

so where to start, well first of all i need to know how to repair a corrupted version of windows 7. I have two hard drives atm one with windows 7 working and one with the corrupted version on it. The main issue here is when my friend was fixing my computer he didnt format the hard drive with win 7 on it properly and i now have about 500mb's if im lucky on that hard drive. So id like to know how do i go about fixing the other hard drive with the corrupted windows 7 on it and no i cant reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows on it since he lost the disk briefly after doing so and it may not have been all that legal.

In the end of it all id like to get windows 10, how i figured about doing this was to get my old hard drive working with win 7 on it, boot up using that then install win 10 on it since it would have enough space to get the files which my current one cant.

If anyone else knows a better way of eventually getting windows 10 as my os without all this trouble that would amazing, i just want a hd with space on it

uhh i dont know what other information to give, i'm fairly certain its the windows files that are corrupted since i can still run my old games from it and not the hard drive.

tl;dr win 7 corrupted, got new hd with win 7, didnt format correctly, ****, want win 10 but not enough hd space, help get meh win 10 somehow by fixing corrupted hd or black magic

ill be out for the next two hours kinda bad time to post this but oh well

I have an Acer travelmate 3300 and all of a sudden on startup, in windows, or even when running the recovery Console or in Safe Mode, the system will blank out e.g. the screen will just go blank and the HDD light will completely disappear (the light that shows HDD activity)

Everything else is on including all the power and the motherboard Fans.

I've taken the drive out and ran a scandisk and repair on it and it says that it fixed some bad sectors (about 32k) but I put it back into the laptop and i still get the problem

i did get blusscreen once and it had the following information.

It then went on about Win32k.sys and then

So heres the rap,

i have used the same install of windows XP for around 2-3 years without a format. ive updated all pc components in that time but kept the same install. of course i used all the relative driver cleaners before hand to reduce any clashes. I always kept the system clean and virus/ spyware free. never missed a beat until...

A few days ago i left my computer on all day whilst at work only to come home to a moniter screen which displayed 'no signal detected' so decided to reset it. then windows loading screen came on and near the end of the loading phase BSOD. i decided to boot in every other mode all followed with BSOD. i have never come across this before in my experience. I am very desperate to recover a few files within my documents including uni work and photos amounst other things <1gb in total id say.

to rule out hardware failure i tried booting it with another computer but BSOD still follows. it must be a software issue. or perhaps the hard drive it self?

i also threw the HDD in an external hard drive box and tried to load it as a mass storage device it does show up however i cant access it because it says it needs to be formatted. also windows displays the drive as empty instead of partially full which it should be.

any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
im sure this comes up alot but it does teach a valuable lesson to back up!

Hello Kimbo
I would suggest that you d/l the tools from the website of the company that made your drive.
Most major drive manufacturers offer such tools.
Some are great... and highly recommended.
Not all are fully compatible with hardware from other makers.
SeaTools may be useful across makers, but I cannot say that it may be used with all.
That is why I suggest going to the maker of your drive.
(When I changed drives, I found that the WD utility was better for my new WD drive, and the Toshiba utility better for the old drive).
Again, YMMV.

Run both S.M.A.R.T. and Long tests, especially the Long.
This will let you know if the drive is bad, and (hopefully) whether anything can be recovered.

I'm just looking for a second "fresh pair of eyes" to comment or suggest a fix for a dilemma I'm having with my WIN XP PRO system. I'm working with a mS MVP on another board, but it's going stale and I'd thought I toss this over here and see if anybody has a suggestion. Approximately 3 weeks ago, when i started Internet Explorer this error message came up: In the above example, substitute sys restore, help center, sys info, management console etc To cut to the chase, as I tried to solve this error, it turns out several of the windows components return this error also even in safe mode, thus ruling out using system restore. sys restore is dead, sys info is dead, mmc, helpctr etc.. However, the computer works with my Corel Draw! program, the internet works with mozilla or Firefox. Things I've done is uninstalled add ons in Internet Explorer, dumped adobe, corel draw, ran hijackthis and run virus scans.. Here's a funny thing: Windows hot fix and security updates come on down the line and install no problem. But when you try to run sys restore you get that "* has encountered a prob and needs to close..." And of course Dr Watson has the same prob If there is an expert who wants to see the total history, here's the link:http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=23623 Nothing against Walter, just thought I'd ask if there is a fresh pair of eyes who might have a different opinion thanks all!!

This computer is a Dell Dimension desktop running XP Home SP2. A couple weeks ago a family member was downloading something and the download apparently stalled, he cancelled and rebooted. Since then Internet Explorer will not open any websites, and System Restore gives an error “System Restore has encountered a problem and needs to close. Do you want to send an error report……..”.
Firefox is also installed on this computer and works fine. I can do without IE but am concerned about not having System Restore.
I have tried the following:
Ran ewido malware removal, Spybot and Ad-Aware (all in Safe Mode), system was clean.
Ran Trend Micro Housecall, system was clean.
Ran ccleaner.
Ran sfc /scannow.
Repaired Internet Explorer and System Restore using the command line “rundll……” commands.
Reinstalled SP2.
Turned off all Startup programs via msconfig.
Turned off all Internet Explorer Add-Ons.

I can ping everything ok.
I’m pretty much out of options other than a Repair Install of XP. I have about 30 gig’s of family photos on here that I need to back up first. HJT Log attached.
Thank you.

Windows Vista Home Premium

I have an external hard drive (just over a year old). It's a WD MyBook. I have it hooked up by eSata 3. It is 1.5tb in size. FAT32 format.

A folder on my drive that had a bunch of video files in it started showing up as about 4 or 6 folders that were named really oddly (a bunch of symbols and underscores and asian characters and lines). At first I thought it might have something to do with a loose ethernet cable or be the fault of the media center thing I was viewing the stuff over (so, the media center viewed the shared files over the network). That was ehh, maybe 2 weeks ago when I noticed it.

Last night I finally decided to see what the flippity was goin' on, and lo-and-behold, they were actually named all that weird stuff. The folder ("From Michael") was obviously corrupted. I used "chkdsk /f" or "chkdsk /r" (I can't remember which of the two it was). It told me I had some problems and if I wanted to turn the folders into a file. I said yes. The folder "From Michael" had no folders in it originally (only files), so this sounded appropriate. Boom! 32kb "From Michael" file now exists.

There was another location on the disk that had problems, but that one isn't important at all.

On the root of the drive (M:\) there are the 2 FOUND.000 and FOUND.001 folders. Hidden and such. FOUND.000 has a file in it named "FILE0000.CHK" dated to 6/3/2010. I probably don'... Read more

I believe that FOUND files originate from chkdsk operations or system operations where something has gone wrong with ability to move/save data files to the appropriate location.

My experience is that these files cannot be converted to anything useful...I just delete mine and move on.

Regarding the only chkdsk log that I am aware of...you should be able to find it by going to Event Viewer, Application tab...looking at the items under Winlogon as Source, Event ID 1001.

Hi:I was having a problem with an update to Windows 7 - specifically my system would not download Explorer 8 updates (even though I never use this browser, I was tired of getting notices to update it). Upgrading from Vista to 7 probably caused this problem in the first place. In-place upgrades are notorious for being riddled with bugs and glitches that can only be resolved by a clean install. So, I don't recommend going back to Vista, then upgrading to 7 again. You will likely experience the same problem again. However, depending on how the manufacturer's Windows 7 disc is set up, you may or may not be able to do a clean install. See here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 VersionYes, you should keep IE8 up to date even if you don't use it. It is built into Windows 7, and is an open vulnerability if it stays unpatched.I would recommend making a full system image backup inside Windows 7 before you do anything else.
