I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am almost done cleaning up a home computer for a coworker. I have question regarding the guest account. I was thinking about trying to delete it entirely and so I strated doing some research on it and came across a site regarding "disabling" the guest account. I stated that in XP Home that the guest account is never truly disabled and if there were a way to force it that it would create a lot of problems since it involves some rudimentary ways in which XP Home works. I am going to heavily password it but I was wondering if it was also possible to rename the account and if doing so would also create problems. Also it seemd that it was talking more about networking. The user is using a dialup would this make a difference?

Well, I have one more question regarding SP2. I have been working pretty hard at tweaking her security settings through various means including hacking the registry. SP2 is getting close to being fully downloaded while I am working online. What would happen to all of this work if I were to go through with the sp2 install? If it were to undo my changes is there a way to save my settings?

Thanks

A:The User Profile (Administrator Account) Service failed to logon and then left with only Guest Account in Windows 7

Hi,

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows 7. About two or three months ago, I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account. I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege. It is not a huge hassle, as I know the administrator account password.

Here is where it becomes very strange. When I turn my computer on, it automatically logs me into my user account (the guest account). When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts, it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer. Also, when I try to change my user account (the guest account) to an administrator account, precisely nothing happens.

It gets evens stranger. When I log out of Windows, the only user account I can pick from, to log back into Windows, is the generic "Administrator" account. My user account is nowhere to be found. When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts, only the administrator account is listed. There is an option turn on a generic guest account, but nothing related to my original user account is shown. Again, this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account (the guest account), and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen.

I feel that I am pretty good at avoiding bad websites, and I do have an antivirus program installed (not that that will prevent my ... Read more

Hi and welcome to the Forum
When you refer to the generic Administrator Account do you mean the Account that is hidden in Windows 7? If so did you activate it using this:
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable If you did the above then this is strange as forgetting the "Hidden admin account you must have at least one ordinary Admin account in Windows 7. You can't operate the system without one!!

Hey guys,

I have a problem and I hope you can help me out.
Today I changed some regedit settings for the guestaccount.
To be able to change the desired properties I had to make my guestaccount admininistrator for a moment. Now the changes are made I want to put guest priveledges back to the standard user ones. Now here is the problem:
When I acces the accountmanagement from the controlpanel, whilst being logged on as guest, I can change my own accounttype back to normal user, but after saving - nomatter what i do - the guest just stays administrator.

Since I have the home edition I cant use any other tool to manage accounts, and because the guest is build-in I also can't change the accounttype fromout another administrator account (It doesnt give the normal option for changing the account type in the Accountmanagement from the controlpanel).

Does any of you guys have any suggestion for how to reset the guestaccount type? Because I'm really stuck.

Thank you in advance

Like the title says. I mean WTF?? It was a custom that a so-called friend of the family conned my mother into buying(at inflated prices, I checked). Told my mom not to trust him but she felt sorry for him because he just lost his job working for a company that make computers. Loser actually has the balls to act like I am a idiot that don't know anything about computers, speaking to me like I am a baby. This isn't the only problem I have but most of the others are manageable. I had to put in a new RAM chip because the one he place in was only had 128 megs, added a 1 gig RAM chip from best buy, and a new sound card because there was no sound card.

Anyways, I can see the disk drive in my computer and it knows when there is a cd in there. I have to manually access the files or .exe for installing things like Microsoft Office in Guest (it basically does not autorun when a cd is place in) but I don't even get that in my admin accounts. It either sits there doing nothing or it tells me to insert a cd when I try right clicking on the disk drive in the admin accounts.

EDIT: I am pretty sure that this problem has something to do with the OS or at least part of the software because I have taken the drives out and placed them in another computer before. Unfortunately the guy that made the thing refused to give me the OS installion disk. Didn't bother to put a CD image on there either.

A:I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts.

It is possible to create user groups on a workstation set-up in windows 7, although as the full set of tools available in a client - Server set-up are not available to you it is a lot more complex and time consuming.

The other issue is that a lot of the tools available in the more professional versions are not available in the Home versions

Hi,

When i access a system which is having windows xp professional as an operating system and it is in workgroup it is going to guest account and asking the guest password but there is an option in which if we change and when we try to access the same system it will ask the user name and password instead of going to guest account.

So do anyone have an idea about that option. Please let me know it is very much needed to me.

Awaiting for the reply.

Not sure I understand your question or problem. Maybe this info will help.

If you are using Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab - Use simple file sharing) it should quietly use the network guest account for access and there should be no prompt. If there is the system has a problem.

If you are using Advanced File Sharing (not using Simple File Sharing) you should get the prompt for a regular account/password.

My friend and I share my laptop. Recently I found out that he was watching porn on my computer. So I promptly confronted him, and told him to stop. Weeks later, he did it again. So I downloaded Norton's Safety Minder to prevent it. So this sneaky prick goes around and enables the guest account, and lo and behold, porn fest again.

What can I do? I don't want to keep him off the admin account, because he plays games on here, but I don't want him watching porn on my laptop either. Is there a way to put parental settings on the guest account? I know you can disable it, tried that, he just re-enables it, then disables it before he gets off. I'm really frustrated about this.

A:Need To Disable Guest Account On Admin Account

You could provide more info about your machine, of course.

For starters, password protect the BIOS and give the child a user account.

There's no need for him to use an admintrator account.

Occasionally check to make sure your BIOS is still secure. Other than that, take the machine away and lock it up.

How to move all the data from the Guest Account to another account so that my kid can play the game from the new account without losing anything? Thank you for your answer.

A:How to move data from Guest Account to another Account?

I have moved data from one account to another several times. Most of the time, it goes really well! However, finding, identifying [safe to move], copying and/or moving folders' files from guest to a standard account is very geeky! If you are not properly geeky, it can go really not well at all. I recommend copying the files from folders, I do not recommend trying to move folders. How geeky, how skilled, do you regard yourself concerning Explorer [which was once called File Manager back when Fred Flintstone used windows]?

When I attempt to login using my user account the PC opens the guest account. The settings for this are as if the PC has just come from the factory and has none of my files in My Docs or Desktop. When I open user accounts in Control Panel it only shows guest account as running. I have tried to do a System Restore but after a selecting a restore point the screen sticks on "gathering information" and won't go any further.
Help please, I have a lot of important inforamtion stored in various memories and also important emails in Outlook Express which I can't access

A:User account opens as guest account

Your user profile has become corrupted. If you have Windows XP Pro (not home) at the login screen, pres CTRL+AL+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the classic login screen. Here log in as Administrator, leave the Password blank unless you set a password for the admin account. Here go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user account with admin rights. Log out of the Administrator account and login as the new user. Browse to C:/Documents and Settings open up your old user profile folder and Copy the My Documents, Favorites, Desktop and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new profile folder overwriting the empty ones.

Hi,
I'm running XP Home SP2.
I have always been using a user account with administrator rights.
Having heard that it is not safe, I thought I would change my account type to power user.
1. I ran "control userpasswords2" and, just in case, tried to change the account I was logged in with; which naturally did not work.
2. Then, in the same window, I defined a password for the main (default) Administrator account, which I had never used.
3. I rebooted in Safe Mode and logged in using the default Administrator account.
4. Went to Control Panel > User accounts, and the admin account I use everyday was not there. Only admin, and guest.
5. Then I rebooted in normal mode and logged in using my usual login... which is now a guest account! Meaning I don't have write access to the C:\ root, for instance... I can't even display the calendar as I don't have the rights to change the system date & time!
How can I sort this out? I've done my Google research but did not find any relevant solution. I'd be very grateful for any advice.
Thanks

Hello. I can't open the guest folder usgin my admin ccount on windows 7. Each time I need a file I have to login using guest account and its frustrating. I just clic on the folder and nothing happens

A:Can't access to guest account files from another account

Administrator account is not for general usage, and NOT your own account.
Administrator account required password to access.
Usually, no one use Administrator account.
Do note the differences between "Administrator" account and "admin" rights.
Administrator account have full rights to anything and everything.
"Admin" rights is just act as administrator and is not an account.

As the 1st newly create account (mainly your own account) may have that admin rights.
With admin rights, you are accessible to create accounts for other users.

Also for guest account, by default have no password.
Guest account is always available, but need to initiate it for use, and no password is needed.

If you create guest account, it will not be a guest account, and this will be another user account, but the name "Guest" may conflict with the system created "Guest" account.

In conclusion, you may started the wrong way.

So, if your had manually create an Guest account with password, it is not a guest account at all.
But an user account with the name "Guest".
When you activated the Guest account, there will not be any password.

Hello all, My gf decided she wanted her admin account name changed on her Windows 8 machine from her first and last name. I edited her account name so that only her first name showed up. I used Netplwiz and everything seemed to go well. Upon rebooting the machine, somehow her guest account (which was turned off and not showing) was the only account accessible. Before this she only had her admin account which was just her first/last name and this was only the account accessible upon booting the machine. Now she cannot access her usual account. In the guest account, I was able to browse to the Users folder in Windows Explorer and see that her usual account titled her first name is still there. When trying to double click the folder, I am prompted for a password, but there is no box to type the password. When looking at the properties of her C drive about 150 GBs are showing as used so I am guessing all her data is still there. Can someone please help a guy out? V Day is this weekend and I would really like to survive it as she is already made at me for basically locking her out of her computer. Thank you in advance!

We've had a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) which until recently, happily shared folders/files across the network to clients requesting access as Guest.

For some reason it has now stopped working in this manner: clients are now required to use an account and password instead.

The only changes made recently are some system updates.

The configuration is as follows:-

Network type: Work

Advanced sharing settings:-

Network discovery: ONFile and printer sharing: ONSharing for anyone with network access to read write the Public folders: ONMedia streaming: ONConnection encryption type: 40- or 56- bitPassword protected sharing: OFFHomeGroup option: set to use accounts and passwords
Other settings:

Windows Explorer folder options has Sharing Wizard UNCHECKED.Firewall is OFF

These settings haven't changed although we've toggled a few to see if they fix something - no joy.

We've also tried setting read or modify privileges for the Guests group and the Guest account at the are disk permissions and file sharing levels.

It wasn't difficult to setup in the first instance (a few weeks ago now) but now things have gone awry and we are lost to know where to go next.

Can anybody help please? Thanks.

By default the Guest user account has very little rights assigned for security reasons. You can change which rights are assigned to it, but I would wonder why you want the guest account to access the modem. Hackers would have a field-day on your PC.

A:A admin account under a Guest account.

Hi StolenChips,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

First, try to access the built-in Administrator Account to see if you can create another Administrator Account or fix the one you already have: Administrator Account. If you can access and work with this account, but can't fix the current account, create another Administrator Account (and while you're at it, create yet another as a backup in case this or something like it happens again - if it's working, you're somewhat lucky - the next time may not be the same and the following procedure may be the only option) and treat the situation like a corrupt user account to transfer your data and profile information. To do this use http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile.

I know you don't want this, but it's probably your only remaining choice (and you don't need a personal reason not to want to do it - NOBODY ever wants to do it). If that doesn't work, the best bet (I would even say the only choice) is to try to save your data and then do a clean install or a restore to factory conditions to re-create a valid Administrator account. To save your data, try Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek.
This should give you enough access to the system to backup your important data (if you can't get in any other way - if you can, use normal procedures to backup or copy/paste the data). If that doesn’t work, try slaving the drive to another computer and recoverin... Read more

It is possible that you computer is infected in such a way the most antivirus tools cannot find the infection. These types of infections try to download/install other infections (which might be caught by your antivirus program). There is a place in your system spec for the antivirus tool, please update that field when you get a chance.

If you have java installed, uninstall it or at least disable it. Let us know if you need help doing that.

You might want to try a scan using this tool:

Recently while running some log checks I found the guest account had been logging on and off, even tho I have disabled the guest acount long ago.

Now MBSA has been showing that the guest acct was active but I had thought it was an error, since when I would check it would show to be off.

Finding this I decided to check deeper and found while checking services that DCOM and RPC had been reenabled and I can no longer stop or disable those services.
The functionality is greyed out.

DCOM is still being blocked luckyly since there has been over a 1000 attemps to start the srvice.
In my admin tools I no longer seem to have the tools to set user permission levels.
I run XP Home with SP1 and all the latest updates for it.
AV and AT scans daily SpywareGuard;Blaster and Spybot S&D tea timer running also Previx. Sygate Pro
I am not sure if the P2P connection attemps are related to this or not as there are no outbound attemps from me logged.

Any ideas have I been owned as a P2P server even tho I logg no outbound connections?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Hi,

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Win 10 and was loving it (was). Saw there was a mail app and thought that would be pretty handy. Signed in and since then, I have to log in to my PC as my email address and password.

I don't want that.

How do I revert my existing user back to a non-Windows live user, with a normal, local account and password?

I am happy to not use the Mail app if that's what it takes, but my concern is that the profile I have now has all my icons and docs and stuff and I don't want to go through the hassle of copying over the profile.

There must be a way to undo this change, but I can't find it.

Thanks

Hi,
Initially, I've had my only administrator account. The problem was the system was not able to login automatically which has no password (pwned). So, i went through here Log On Automatically at Startup.
But the problem was I accidentally removed the Administrator Group from my only account, whether you believe it or not - It accepted and went on. I logged out and logged in to find that my current account has been turned into Guest account and don't have the administrator account.

Now, this is the problem I've run into : I am not currently in Administrators account and I cannot make changes to account/install a software.

I've tried out the cmd.exe with creating administrator using netuser and it showed System Error 5. Access Denied. Mostly I get an Access Denied error on all occasions.

I'm not able to create password for Administrator account which is disabled too!

P.S : I have a dual boot system with Linux as an another OS. So, creating folders in the partition is not a problem.

I'm getting rid of an old netscape web based email account and begin a new yahoo account. I would like to forward the mail from my old account to my new account automatically.
Yahoo gives instructions on doing this but says I need a POP server name. Will this type of mail forwarding work with web-based email? If so, how do I find out netscapes POP server name?
Thanks,

A:forward the mail from my old account to my new account automatically.

POP Access on Yahoo is only for paid accounts I believe, not free.
Settings are:

pop.mail.yahoo.com

smtp.mail.yahoo.com

All this is on the Yahoo site.

newcomer just looking for an answer to: how one forwards their outlook mail account to an aim.com mail account?

A:How does one forward their outlook mail account to an aim.com mail account?

There are no such things as Outlook mail accounts (in the context of your question anyway). Your mail account is on a server where Outlook fetches mail from.

The better way to set up mail forwarding is on the server. If you have some sort of a web interface or a shell account, then you may be able to set the forward address yourself. Otherwise, talk to the mail server administrator.

You can set up mail filtering rules in Outlook too, which say that whenever Outlook receives a new message, it will send it so somewhere else. This approach is very bad though, since you would have to have your Outlook running 24/7 to keep the forwarding ability.

I can only guess that the Account.equals() method in Windows' codebase looks like this:
{
return this.emailAddress == account.emailAddress;
}

A while back, I realized I no longer needed my Hotmail address, and set up my Microsoft account to use my G-mail address. This simplified things quite a lot for me. This is the account I use to log into Windows 8.
I just decided to try out the much-hated Mail app, and set up my G-mail account there. After some imperfectness, I thought about just removing it and using Chrome G-mail on its own. However, I ran into this:
They seem to falsely think that my G-mail account is the same as my Microsoft account, when in reality there's no reason I shouldn't be able to remove this. (Heck, it wasn't there 10 minutes ago) Any ideas? If this is a real bug, any way to submit it to Microsoft?

My account on Windows 7 64-bit has become a "guest account" with no rights. I cannot do anything anymore! Everytime I try and do anything (even a simple system restore) I get the message from user account control which tells me to insert an administrator's password. There is no place to insert the password and the "yes" icon is disabled.

I have no idea how this happened. The computer is 2 days old!

Does anyone know how I can manage to give myself administrative rights again?

Thanks

Hiya!

The Help and Support of Windows XP Pro (SP1) says that the Guest account can be used to allow people to log in and check their email etc.... but when I log in as Guest all the Dial-up Accounts are rendered unaccessible. I would prefer not to create a User account so can anyone tell me if the Guest account can actually be used as its supposed to be (ie: in the way Help says it can be used?)

Using Win Xp Pro (SP1)
Thanks,
J

I enabled the "Guest" user for my son to use when he visits, but when he tries to log on as "Guest" the message: "The User Profile Service service failed the login" appears.

I disabled Guest and re-enabled, but still the same message.

I created a user name just for him as a standard user, but when he logs on as "Joe", the same thing happens. I created 4-5 other accounts, some standard users, some administrators, but can't log on to any of them.

I have no trouble logging on as myself (administrator).

After searching the forums I find similar issues in Vista, but not for Windows 7, and the registry entries seem to be different in Vista and I don't want to try the fixes in Windows 7.

When I go to C:\Users\ the other accounts I set up, are not listed, just mine.

Any suggestions?

A:Can't log onto guest account

See this tutorial on how to fix this problem. It'll work with win7 also.

I have 2 Promise NAS boxes, both NS4300N. The both lack a guest account. I cannot create an account without a password and as far as I know, a guest account is the user called guest without a password. Reason I want to do this is that I have my eyes on this media player which has a LAN connection and it will let me browse to my NAS, that is if my NAS had a guest account and the devices I found on the market that connect to any network all use the guest account to connect.

Does anyone know how to add a guest account on my NS4300n NAS ??

Thanks

Hello:

I have successfully activated the hidden guest account by using the net user /guest:active command from an elevated command prompt. However, the account does not appear at the bottom left of my login screen along with the other accounts on my system, so I am unable to use the guest account. Does anyone have any ideas?

A:How to log in to the guest account?

The built-in Guest account is deprecated in Windows 10. You can create a new Guest account easily and quite fast by yourself, instructions in the video in this post: Windows 10 instructional videos by Ten Forums members - Page 96 - Windows 10 Forums
