The advisability of Partitioning of HDD of my W530

Q: The advisability of Partitioning of HDD of my W530

While installing 'ExpressCache software for Windows 10(64 bit)', the set-up came up with a message stating that "Please create a ExpressCache partition manually on an SSD to speed-up your computer performance".My question is on the advisability of partitioning the W530 HDD or SDD.My device was delivered to me by Lenovo without any partition, at all. Now, almost five years down the line, while distinctly sensing the continuously reducing performance of my device, I approached the Lenovo service center in my city(Kolkata), as suggested to me by the Lenovo India customer care. The guy, the owner of that service center, told me that partitioning of W530 HDD is "not possible"!There was no explanation offered to me though for his observation. Now, therefore, my question to this forum is on the advisability of partitioning of HDD of W530.Could this be a fact that this guy (the owner of the service center and an engineer himself, as claimed to I) is unaware of his job and hence avoided me and the question altogether? Thanks in Advance to all of you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

The ExpressCache software is used with a small capacity (16-24GB, as I recall) mSATA SSD installed in the slot normally used for the WWAN cellular modem card. It acts as additional cache for the primary hard disk drive.l If you don't have a mSATA SSD in your ThinkPad W530 you should not install the ExpressCache software.

Not sure if I can go with a 3840x2160 with this and have anohter external monitor.  The page is a little confusing and I dont want to end up with a nice montitor I cannot use.Any help would be appreciated.

Well, Monday was Upgrade Day and it's a good thing that I alloted most of the day for it.  I started the upgrade and after the first reboot, blank screen and no response from the laptop, shutdown and started over, same thing.  Then it came to me that I hadn't removed the video drivers which were not compatible with Win 10.  Went in to UEFI/BIOS and selected Integraded Graphics and the install then worked fine. Reactivated Discrete Graphics and installed Nvidia Drivers. Now Windows 10 Enterprise is working moderately well but I have some irratating issues that maybe you guys know a solution. 1. Power Management - Since Win 10 removed the power manager, how do I set the battery to charge only below a certain level (ie. 75%)?2. The Wireless light keeps coming on and the network connection is turned off.  No Fn F5 anymore to turn the radios on or off?3. No onscreen display of Thinklight/Backlit Keyboard? Other keys appear as normal, ie. Caps Lock/Unlock? I'm generally happy with the transitition and was already familiar with win10 (used it as a VM)  The only other issue was Office 2016 and click to run, didn't like that at all and figured a work around to install it. TIA

OK. W530 user here obviously. My first W530 I bought about a year ago and it came with the older USB2 dock with eSata. This dock has been mostly ok for my needs (the sound noisy unfortunately) but I am considering just grabbing the USB3 dock. So a weird thing happened and my first W530 died after updating a BIOS setting. It gave an error on writing the bios settings to NVRAM and refused to ever boot again. I spent a few days trying everything. I liked the laptop so much I just decided I would replace the board or buy another. Long story short I ended up with a working replacement that is a newer revision and was built in 2013 with a slightly better CPU. It came with the 170 watt power supply, but I my dock only takes the 135 watt unit. I'm thinking that the newer USB3 dock takes the beefier supply? It would seem so. I haven't had any real issues with this machine other than twice my cat has tapped it with her head and the static discharge froze the nvidia GPU. Very odd. I also had some instability but then again I did have the K2000 overclocked and running pretty hot. It seems to take some abuse though. I did repaste the heat sinks and made sure that everything was pretty well and tight. Temps at full load on both the GPU and CPU are around 90-95C which is in the upper limit, but at the same time nothing is throttling. At stock clocks temps max around 80C or so. Not bad really. Lenovo did a decent job with the thermal design. So I've been trying to get better battery life out ... Read more

Hello everyone, There seems to be a lot of posts regarding W10 and Thinkpads and most of them appear to negatively speak of the impact of switching from either W7 or W8.1 to W10. That being said, there is a lack of data regarding how some people have made the upgrade/switch and how that impacts their experience of the OS. So, my question is simple: If doing a clean install (USB boot) and not an upgrade, would W10 bring something new to the table compared to say W8.1 (currently running on my W530)? It appears to be that some people are doing the W7, install all updates and service packs, and then upgrade to W10 as a way of doing a "clean install" that seems to solve some issues with drivers. Also, it appears to be that some download drivers directly from Lenovo for their respective machines/hardware, taking those to a USB stick BEFORE doing a clean install and after the clean install of W10, they install all drivers they downloaded to make things like WiFi or BT work. I always believed a clean isntall was best, but it appears to be that Lenovo has yet to cover essentials when it comes to legacy systems and the drivers needed. Another thing that I am concerned is that I would probably want to download W10 and make a bootable USB (as I have W8.1) as a back up for future installs in case my mSATA fails and I need to restart from scratch to have a working machine (happened once with a previous T400 I had and having the CD for W7 helps a lot) Howe... Hi, I have a newly purchased refurbished W530 with a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD, 219 GB. It's the only drive in the machine other than the optical drive. I'd like to upgrade to a larger SSD data drive. Can anyone explain my options here? I take it that there is one internal bay, occupied by the current SSD, plus the "ultrabay", currently occupied by the optical drive, yes? So my choices are: 1. Swap out the current SSD for a larger one2. Swap out the optical drive for a larger SSD in some sort of adaptor caddy (and use an external optical drive if I want/need one)3. Use an external SDD (presumably USB 3?) Can anyone comment on these options and make any recommendations? The machine will be used for recording and mixing audio, including high quality multitracks of live shows. Thanks for your time and help.

Hello,  Does Lenovo have a car charger for a Thinkpad w530 or an adpater that could be used as such? My normal adapter says 20V / 170W / 8.5A. I did see some 20V / 4.5 car chargers at Amazon, but I am not sure what the effect is of a lower amperage. Will it just work, but charge slower, or will it not work at all or will it possible even break the laptop? It's been a while since I took physics classes... Anyway, a car charger from Lenovo that was built for my laptop would be best.

A:Car charger for W530?

If you really mean "charger", the answer is yes. The battery will charge slowly with the 90W combination (car and A/C) adapter if the laptop is turned off.  The W530 will not run at all when hooked to the 90w. I suggest a real Lenovo adapter, rather than aftermarket, so the resistance is correct on the signal pin, (used to identify wattage) although some generics may be OK.

Over the past couple months my W530 has been shutting off by itself.  At first, the problem seemed to happen every few hours of use. I could turn the laptop back on immediately after shutdown and it would continue to operate normally for a few hours until it would shut off again. Then, the laptop began to shutoff more frequently until it was to the point where it would shutoff two second after I turned it on (the green light on the power button would light up for a couple seconds and then power off).  I have taken it to several repair shops (one local third party shop and one Lenovo service provider here in HCMC, Vietnam) and neither of them found anything wrong with the laptop. But both times after I took the laptop to the shops, the computer began to display the same problem within a few days after gettign the laptop back from repair. For whatever reason, this problem doesn't seem to occur while the laptop is at the repair shop. One idea I do have is that the problem seems to occur after some extended periods of use... When I took my laptop to the shop the last time it had been off for probably 3 weeks... and then seemed to operate fine while they were searching for problems. When I got the laptop back, I used it frequently for about 3 days with no issues until suddenly the same problem occured (laptop shut off by itself, can't turn back on for more like a few minutes before another shutoff). However, if I leave it off for about 2-3 days,  I can get... Read more

Hey everyone, I've had my W530 for 3 years now and its worked flawlessly. However a few weeks ago it began to just shut-down randomly, and the time between shut-downs would decrease up until the point that I couldn't start the laptop because it would shut down after 2 seconds after the power button was pressed. I took out my battery and directly used the AC adapter once the problem began. When I could make it to BIOS the laptop would not shut off and could stay on for a long time. At the beginning when the problem began I did install a temp. monitor and nothing looked abnormal, and the temp. never went over 90 deg C so I know it is not a heat issue. Also, safe mode worked and I could access windows. I ended up recovering the hard drive and factory resetting it. It worked!...... but the symptoms started coming back the next time I booted the laptop, and slowly the shut downs would happen more and more often until it was unusable. So I thought the hard drive had something to do with it, so I swapped the original hard drive with a Seagate one I had laying around and installed the factory default image on it. Again it worked for the first day, and then after I shut it down once and move it somewhere else it begins to show the symptoms again, even if I move it back to the original place. Does anyone have any advice how I can go about fixing this? Hello and welcome,

The way I read this:  ThinkPad Notebooks; 2013 to present (withdrawn models)

Some came with Windows 8, some came with 7 as a downgrade from 8, and some were "pure" Windows 7.  I'd expect the 8 and 7 via downgrade to have embedded Windows 8 keys and the pure 7 machines not.

Not quite 100% on this, but that's my understanding.

Hi everyone! I have had my ThinkPad W530 for a couple of years now and have been experiencing this problem basically from when I first got this laptop. When I try to power up the laptop, it does not turn on - sometimes it reaches the ThinkPad boot screen and I am able to enter the BIOS, but when I try to diagnose hardware issues, the computer turns back off. Sometimes I am able to boot into Windows or Ubuntu, but the computer turns off immediately after the boot (without bluescreening), or if i just let the computer sit for a couple of seconds. There are also other times where when I press the power button, the power button LED turns on for a second and you can hear the hard drive start spinning and then it just stops almost immediately and the power button turns back off, with nothing being displayed on the screen. I am pretty sure this is not a harddrive problem because I have tried replacing the original harddrive with a harddrive that works. When I did this, at first, I was able to boot into Ubuntu (as I have that OS on the other hard drive), but after a couple of minutes, the computer turned back off. In addition to this, I have tried booting into an external bootable USB, but just as I was trying to boot into the device, the computer would turn back off. I have tried doing these with the battery in and without the battery. I have also tried doing the "hard reset" by disconnecting the battery and AC adapter from the computer, holding the power button for ~... Read more

A:ThinkPad W530 not turning on at all

Since you mentioned that you had the motherboard replaced, I am not sure whether my solution can be applied to your problem, but the things you described appear to be similar to what I experienced with my w530 (2436CTO, i73840QM): the power goes out irregularly and sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. I had the issue for about a week. The machine was running great till the nightmare. At first, I thought it was dead. When I pressed the pwr button, the button light was on for a second. I also noticed the think light flashed. After hours of trying the tricks that you also discribed in your post, I was able to get it up and running by luck. I thouht the problem was solved until it suddenly shut down. And more unexpected poweroffs. I was blaming battery first, then RAMs, then power jack, finally I was able to narrow it down to the motherboard. Here is a quick way to diagnose whether your problem has the same cause: firmly press the power slot ( left highlight in the illustration of the maintenance manual  page 100 ) and push the power button, if you can boot it up without issues, then it might be the same problem, which is likely that some connection in the motherboard near the power slot is wearing out. Simple solution: fold a piece of paper into a short thick stick, slide in the gap between the magnesium structure frame and the right brass arm of the thermo fan (at where they cross), so that the board is effectively pushed down to enforce the power connection... I have a Thinkpad W530 (2438-4KU) running Windows 7 Pro, with a 3rd-generation (Sandy Bridge?) Intel processor (Intel Core i7-3630QM). Even though BIOS Update 2.70 had been listed in the Critical tab in Lenovo Update -- presumably because it addressed the Spectre and/or Meltdown vulnerabilities -- I purposely held off on installing it. Doubly so after reading comments on this board about pc?s running at hot and widely-varying temperatures after installation. Well, just now I ran Lenovo Update again, and was expecting to still see a BIOS update listed in the Critical tab since I hadn?t applied it. But I was surprised to see that the only BIOS update listed is now in the Recommended (not Critical) tab -- Update 2.71 -- and the only vulnerability it states as addressed by the update relates to Intel Active Management.  (There are no updates of any kind listed under Critical now.) So is 2.71 cumulative, i.e., does it have the Meltdown/Spectre patches even though not listed in the specs? And if so, shouldn?t it still be listed as Critcal in my run of Lenovo Update since I never applied 2.70? In addition, I?d appreciate any feedback from W530 users with Sandy Bridge as to how BIOS 2.71 (or for that matter, 2.70) is working for you -- particularly if you have Windows 7. Any heat issues? And what kind of practical performance hit did it cause (comparing to 2.69 or earlier)? Thanks

For the last 2 years, I have never had an issue. Then since last week, if I go and get a coffee or leave the laptop untouched for half an hour, I come back and its shut down. This happens both in the doc, and on direct power. It happens with both my batteries, which are always 100% charged because I never use it on battery. When I switch it back on, chrome etc. says it session was ended and offers to reload my last windows, so it must be a "kill" rather than a graceful shutdown.I have not had any updates or windows updates for some time.Any ideas how to diagnose this? I needed a portable machine to do graphic design and animation work (Photoshop, After Effects, etc.) but I also needed a Blu-ray drive because I love to watch them blu-rays on my laptop. That rules out any of the newer workstations. So, I've been unhealthily drooling over the W530 for years and, finally, I had the chance to get one. I bought it used ($600) and then completely replaced just about everything and now it's like-new! I also had to buy a new screen as the one that came with the laptop was not 95% Gamut. The RAM is new and the SSD's are new. it came with a 9-cell battery but I also bought a 6-cell battery because I don't like how the 9-cell hangs out the back. I also have 2 power supplies, a 135W that came with the machine and a 170W that I bought new. Lastly, I got a cool Thinkpad toploader carrying case. So now my laptop looks super brand new, performs brilliantly and didn't cost me that much overall. As you can tell, I am excited!

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading a T530 to a W530 and have ordered the following motherboard04X1537 - PL Q3 W8-PROyAMTyTPM RAID K2000M (as detailed in another thread) There are two heatsinks listed for the W530 04W3626 FAN WS Delta04W3627 FAN WS AVC From research online it appears the Delta has a widened GPU area to cover the GPU RAM and the AVC does not.Any help on the correct one for the motherboard I have listed will be much appreciated!

A:W530 Motherboard Heatsink

I believe they are simply 2 different suppliers and either will work. I don't have one to look at, but I believe the VRAM normally has thermal pads on it that rest against the magnesium frame. The board normally comes with several pads that cool important parts by contacting the frame

My new W530 came with W530 I7?3720QM 1x4gb.   The laptop will not boot (blank screen) whenever I tried to install dimms in slot 3 and slot 4.   I can install a single dimm in slot 1, or one each in slot 1 and slot 2.  I have 3 sets of identical modules.  Each set tested fine using the memory tool individually or in sets of 2.  I have also loaded the latest BIOS.  Just cannot get 32gb to work.  Do I need to get 1.35v sodimm when I am using 4x8gb ?

A:Cannot install 4 sodimms in my new W530

Do you have 4x8GB modules?Someone else reported that his machine wouldn't POST with DIMMs in slots 1 and 3 or something.

Hi, To start off with, my Bluetooth has always been somewhat sporadic in terms of when it works or not but, before I upgraded to Windows 10, it always would eventually work and I could figure it out. I upgraded to Windows 10 and then, after a few days, downgraded back to Windows 7. Ever since then my Bluetooth just doesn't show up anywhere on my computer. It used to show up in the taskbar but no more. I've tinkered with the Bluetooth drivers, etc. But it seems at some point my computer just completely forgot it has a Bluetooth radio in it. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated.

My SSD drive keeps getting full and I'm tired of having to move/delete files. I am confident I can physically replace the drive with a larger one but my main concern is the original one had several partitions which enabled me to install everything to factory defaults. How can I copy these partitions to the new drive?

A:W530 Upgrade SSD Drive

Hello,

You may wish to consider purchasing an SSD "laptop upgrade kit" which contains not just the SSD, but a USB 3.0 to SATA adapter (and possibly drive enclosure) and disk cloning software to copy all of the partitions from the old SSD to the new SSD.

Hey everyone, Does anyone know which SSD/HDD the W530 would support? I am running out of space on my main drive and would like to add another one or just replace the main drive. The only problem is that I do not know if the maximum would be compatible with larger sizes like 4TB. I saw someone asking about 2TB, but I want to know if I should also consider larger drives. I am running Windows 10 64-bit with NTFS partitions in case that is relevant. Thank you.

A:W530 Maximum SSD/HDD Size

You need a 9.5mm (thick) drive.  As far as I know, there is nothing bigger than a 2TB Seagate (5400RPM).

When shopping for a new(ish) laptop, one of the things that caused me to decide in favor of the W530 was the fingerprint reader. I shopped for a used one, and when it arrived I was disappointed that it did not have a fingerprint reader (turns out that when I was looking at pictures, I saw the square where the color sensor goes and assumed it was a fingerprint sensor like the one on the new Motorola phones.) Is it possible to replace the keyboard bezel and add a fingerprint sensor, or is it more complicated than that?

Hi All:   Sorry for the repost, but none of the solutions found seem to work. As indicated by the title, my Bluetooth card is having problems. After a Windows or Lenovo update, the Bluetooth radio stopped working. The card does not show up in the hotkey menu, device manager, or under the hardware tab when I go to Start -> Devices and Printers -> Right Click on Computer -> Select "Bluetooth Settings."  I've checked to see if it's enabled in the BIOS, which it is, I've had the card replaced this morning, updated the hotkey and I've tried installing the latest Bluetooth driver from Lenovo. When installing I receive the message stating that my Bluetooth is not plugged in. I've done everything I can think of, and now I'm short on ideas.

Hi,Recently I am thinking to configure two SSD as RAID 0 in my W530 in order to improve its HD performance. My original HD configuration is  a 500G 7200rpm disk which is noisy and slow.My questions are:1. Does the BIOS support RAID configuration by myself or not?2. Does anyone know whether the 'TRIM' is supported in such configuration or not? (I have windows 8 pro upgraded.)

The only way I can power on the laptop after a shutdown is to: remove the power adapter and battery, press the power button 10 times and then hold it for 10 seconds, reinstall just the battery and it fires right up. Does anybody know a solution for this? BIOS setting, CMOS battery, clone exorcism? Thanks for any info.

I'm looking to upgrade my W530 with a 3720M processor and 4 GB factory RAM. I can't find out my RAM's specifications like voltage, timing or mhz from the BIOS and I don't want to run into compatibility issues, so can anyone suggest some compatible 8 GB RAM sticks, as well as a screwdriver or screwdriver kit to remove the back two screws? Thanks.

A:W530 compatible RAM + Screwdriver

Pompous,

Here is your Hardware Maintenance Manual:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM014941

Your PSREF will show you how much RAM is supported depending on your processor, etc.  You can have up to 16GB in the dual-core model and up to 32GB in the quad-core model.

The PSREF is here:
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf

Any PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, non-parity, dual-channel capable RAM is supported.

The W530 ships with memory under the keyboard.  It should be easy to install additional modules by removing the bottom memory door cover.  I think any small screwdriver should work fine.

Your System Service Parts List is here:
http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/W530_FRU_BOM.pdf

Hope this helps.

I purchased a W530 last fall. Sometimes I connect it to our large Samsung TV so that a few of us can see what I'm  doing. I'm connecting through the VGA port. But the system won't let me DUPLICATE the desktop; the option for "duplicate" shows up, but it only allows me to Extend the desktop.  How can i Duplicate it? I've tried the Nvidea controls, the Intel HD Graphics controls, and the Control Panel/display controls; and I've tried going into the BIOS/setup/display and adjusting Optimus, Discrete (and one other, I forget). But none of them, so far, have allowed me to DUPLICATE my desktop to the VGA/TV connection.HELP!

Solved!

A:Duplicating Desktop on W530

Hi, samwill

Once the VGA cable is plugged in and the connection has been made, have you tried hitting Win + P? This is a keyboard shortcut that lets the user select display options when connected to another display.

If that doesn't help, then I would make sure that all drivers for your system have been updated. All of them can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

... going back to unanswered question of power and battery on W530 - mine presently at 94% and not charging. Since last 5 years charge was slowly alternating between 100% and 96% quite regularly there is something hotrribly worng going on, and seems that lenovo does not give a flying frack about fixing major screw up with recent batch of updates.

A:w530 battery is not charging...

Most people prefer batteries to charge to somewhere in the 90's and to start charging somewhat lower.  (I set it to 75%.)  This kind of setting makes the battery last longer.  Limits can be set using Lenovo Vantage.
