Apple offers up to $200K in its first Bug Bounty Program

Q: Apple offers up to $200K in its first Bug Bounty Program

Starting this fall, Apple will pay up to $200,000 for iOS and iCloud bugs

As part of a security presentation given at this year's Black Hat conference, Apple today announced that it would be starting up a bug bounty program in the fall. The program will reward security researchers who uncover vulnerabilities in Apple's products and bring them to the company's attention. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and many other companies have offered bug bounty programs for some time now, but this is Apple's first.

For now, Apple is intentionally keeping the scope of the program small. It will initially be accepting bug reports from a small group of a few dozen security researchers it has worked with in the past. For now, bounties are only being offered for a small range of iDevice and iCloud bugs. The full list is as follows:
Secure boot firmware components: Up to $200,000 (~£150,000)
Extraction of confidential material protected by the Secure Enclave: Up to $100,000.
Execution of arbitrary code with kernel privileges: Up to $50,000.
Access from a sandboxed process to user data outside of that sandbox: Up to $25,000.
Unauthorized access to iCloud account data on Apple servers: Up to $50,000.
As the program continues and Apple works the, um, bugs out of its processes, the company will expand the list of eligible security researchers as well as the list of hardware and software bugs for which bounties are offered.

Researchers who want to claim the bounties will need to submit a report to Apple with a working proof-of-concept exploit that works on the latest stable version of iOS. If the bugs are hardware-related (as may be the case for Secure Enclave bugs), the proof-of-concept must also work on the latest shipping iPhone or iPad hardware. The payment amounts outlined above are upper limits?actual payments will depend on the novelty of the issue and how likely the issue is to be exploited.

Researchers are also asked not to disclose the bugs before Apple has time to fix them, though the company would only say it would fix them as soon as possible and wouldn't commit to a firm time window. Once the fix is published, researchers will be given credit if they want it (Apple already does this in its security update release notes). Successful researchers will also be given the opportunity to donate their bounty to charity alongside a matching donation from Apple, though Apple says it may choose not to match donations at its discretion.

Exploit broker steals Apple thunder, offers $500,000 for iOS zero days:
SOURCE: zdnet.com (ARTICLE DATE: 11th Aug 2016)

It was only last week that Apple finally launched a bug bounty program, but it did not take long for exploit peddlers to outbid the tech giant...

Apple is offering security researchers up to $200,000 if they privately disclose serious, critical holes in software rather than take such vulnerabilities and exploits elsewhere. However, Exodus Intelligence upped the game on Tuesday by raising Apple's bid, luring researchers with rewards of up to half a million for valid Apple software bugs.

The exploit trader has launched a "hit list" of the hottest, most wanted exploits for software including Apple iOS, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Adobe Flash. The company will pay $500,000 for the most dangerous bugs in Apple iOS 9.3 and above -- and researchers can choose to take a lump sum or smaller payments which continue to roll in as long as the exploit is still alive.

"Exodus is excited to be engaging the global research community in our mission to provide the highest quality of vulnerability intelligence in the industry," Logan Brown, president of Exodus Intelligence said.

Source: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Vulnerability Disclosure

In early November, a well-known and respected security researcher by the name of Tavis Ormandy alerted us to several security vulnerabilities in the consumer version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Within days, we were able to fix several of the vulnerabilities server-side and are now internally testing a new version (2.2.1) to release in the next 3-4 weeks to patch the additional client-side vulnerabilities. At this time, we are still triaging based on severity.

The research seems to indicate that an attacker could use some of the processes described to insert their own code onto a targeted machine. Based on the findings, we believe that this could only be done by targeting one machine at a time.

However, this is of sufficient enough a concern that we are seeking to implement a fix. Consumers using the Premium version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should enable self-protection under settings to mitigate all of the reported vulnerabilities.

Unfortunately, vulnerabilities are the harsh reality of software development. In fact, this year alone, our researchers have found and reported several vulnerabilities with other software. A vulnerability disclosure program is one way to accelerate the discovery of these vulnerabilities and empower companies like Malwarebytes to fix them.

I?d like to take this opportunity to launch the Malwarebytes Bug Bounty program which I hope will encourage other security researchers to re... Read more

I have Comcast Cable. A few months ago, I started having VOIP problems (no dial-tone, or not able to hear person on the other end). About a month ago, I started testing the internet speeds and found out I was only getting 200k at certain periods of the day. It usually happens after 3pm, but I haven't been able to nail down an exact pattern. The proper speed is 5,000-6,000k, and it tests that way about 2/3 of the time. The upload speed is always 900k, no matter what (that might explain why people on the other end of the phone can hear ME.)

I've called Comcast several times. They run tests and tell me everything looks fine on their end, and that my speeds are quite good. At first, they gave me a laundry-list of things to do, like scanning for viruses, etc., but nothing worked. Finally, Comcast offered to send a technician out, but they charge $50 if it's the customer's fault. That's why I'm here, trying to get some help.

Right now, I have a wireless router and a voip adapter connected to the modem. However, I've tested the speed with just the modem alone, and the speed is still slow.

I've "power-cycled", re-booted and all that stuff MANY times. I have antivirus and a firewall, and I even get these same exact speed issues with Linux, so it doesn't appear to be virus or firewall-related. I cleared out temporary internet files and I think I reset my IP; these are all things Comcast told me to do. Nothing I've tried ha... Read more

The desktop that is affected is running Windows XP Home Edition, SP3. Literally, within a minute of turning computer on a Svchost.exe will quickly climb to the 200k memory usage range. When I end the process through the task manager, it quickly comes back and climbs just as high all over again. I stepped away for a couple of minutes, and when I came back the computer sounded like it was going to explode: the problematic Svchost.exe was running at 950k! This is horribly impacting the performance of the computer and it is making it practically impossible to use. I've Googled solutions and tried a couple "common" fixes but to no avail. I was also going to try a system restore, but I was unaware that it isn't even turned on, so that plan's a bust. Please, someone help!

If so, how is the payment processed ? by paypal, check ?
If my windows bug is eligible for a reward, then Microsoft would be supporting a greater cause, which is my antivirus:

Hi All, I have a Lenovo B590 laptop. I had some issues with my wifi card (long story, and I guess it's not relevant) and decided to update my BIOS. The original version was H1ET75WW (1.18). I made a bootable USB with Rufus and the updating process was started. During the update I got a message like ?System will be restarted?. However, it didn't turn on anymore, the update seems failed. Now when I push the power button, the power led lights up, the fan starts and after a few seconds it restarts again and again endlessly. The first ?boot? is a bit longer 6-8 seconds, the next ones shorter, 3-4 seconds, but the screen is always blank. It's a bit promising that when I plug in an USB and while holding the Fn+R buttons and turning the laptop on, then the first ?boot? is a bit longer, and it tries to read the USB drive - at least it's led light starts blinking. So I hope that there is a solution to repair the BIOS by using the appropriate files ont the USB stick. What I tried so far:Taking out the battery and plugging out tha AC power, and holding the power button for a minute.Taking out the CMOS battery for half an hour and pushed the power button without battery/AC power.WinCrisis (even though I couldn't find a BIOS.wph file, but tried to rename EXE and CAP files).Creating a bootable USB again, with the DOS files on it from the official Lenovo site.Trying to rename/edit autoexec.bat and other files endlessly... I'm fixing this system for someone and they had the typical antivirus 2012 popup rampage BS. I got process explorer to run, found where its process launched from (application data/local) and there were three 3-character executables sitting there, all created on the same date, one of which was repeatedly starting up. So I terminated and deleted those three and the system was acting mostly normal. There were no unable-to-account-for items in any of the various ways to view startup lists but now windows update is broken :(

It's Win7 so I ran the built in Windows Update utility and 1 installed and 14 didn't but they were already downloaded. So I deleted the update cache with a batch file containing:
CD %Windir%
CD SoftwareDistribution
DEL /F /S /Q Download

and that worked so I re-checked for updates and it was the same ones so I hit download and they did redownload successfully then all failed to install pretty quickly. So I picked one of the Win7 security updates from the list and downloaded the WIn7 64 bit version of that KB# from download.microsoft.com and tried to install it manually via a standalone installer download of it. It went through the steps nicely then just said it failed.
I unhid the administrator account and logged in as that (for the first time on this system by the way) and got the same result trying to run it. So apparently something isn't quite right.

So I ran the SFC utility and it came up with a result that some... Read more

Hi all,

Having this problem for several months, suspected HDD first but bought new M500 and seems there's something else is responsible for this "fun" I'm having with the PC.

Basically, the nature seems to be the same all the time - when I playing video games (currently it is Kings Bounty, used to be the problem with Max Payne 2012 even during the installation), also used to play Flash games and used to watch video online, it was crushing.
Most common BSOD problem was "page fault in non-paged area" and "IRQL is not less or equal". Sometimes it gives me just a black screen and nothing else at all so I have to go "hard reboot". Sometimes, it hangs with the destroyed, "torn in pieces" video and annoying repetitive sound like ding-ding-ding, so I need to reboot it again, sometimes it goes into BSOD with some errors and exceptions.

I have tried numerous times different Windows 7 versions, both x86 and x64 architecture, and tried XP. Same issues.

I have noticed although, that when the W7 has a clean installation and almost no updates installed, it gives me less headache. Recently I have stopped installing the Catalyst suite for the graphics and thought the problem was just with that but after going through all Windows updates it started again.

I think that there is something with the video, but cannot get to the bottom of it.

Please help as this is becoming now a paranoia for me and I cannot sleep properly.... Read more

One thing that drove me crazy when using windows vs say a mac is that all mac programs use the search, spotlight feature really well.

For example, when launching UNISON, a usenet program for Apple OS, and you typed "shooter" you would instantly get every instance of the word "shooter" in a matter of seconds. On Vista, it was a completely different story. Using Forte Free agent, it could take up to 10 minutes, sometimes longer, as it searched out every instance of "shooter" before showing you all the hits/posts that you were looking for.

Just wondering if the file indexing/search has changed in Windows 7 compared to Vista and if developers would embrace this if it works.

Would also like information on any usenet programs for windows 7 that may work.

Let me re-phrase - does anyone know if the Windows 7 architecture for searching has been updated? In Vista it took a while to span, search across all discs and am wondering if search had been updated.

Thanks -

The second question is, what is the best USENET program one can use for Windows 7 or Vista? Forte is very out dated in my opinion.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

Filseclab is the only free firewall for Windows that I know of that has time-based filtering rules. You will more than likely have to pay money for anything else, or switch to a Unix-based operating system.

A:How To Remove Best Offers Spyware

Hello and welcome to the forum. If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, I will see what I can do. This is a nasty infection and it will take some work. Since I do not see some of the normal markers for this infection I will use a slightly different fix. We may have to run the more complex fix later, we will see. Let me start you off with this information: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=12155 concerning a class action suit you may be able to get involved in against the purveyors of this garbage. Thanks to Atribune, Trevuren and any others who helped with this fix, you can be successful if you will follow the directions carefully. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad . I am trying to up the graphics on my computer since i was stuck using only PCI slots i upgraded to an Abit AW8d mobo SLI enabled. So i'm on a pretty tight budget for building my PC, i can easily use up to $200 on this and i can put in more if i need to but is it better/cheaper to get x2 SLI video cards or one high end video card.

What i'm running atm:
Abit AW8D SLI mobo
Dual pentium 4 3ghz cpu
1.5 gbs RAM
3d Fuzion Nvidia FX5500 (PCI vc)
stock PSU

also have a question for the PSU if i can afford to use the SLI. When i buy the PSU does it have to have SLI support or be a SLI enabled PSU or can i just get a PSU with a solid ammount of watts and it will work? Because i noticed that some PSU specs say "SLI support: No" but it didnt seem right to me so if someone could clear that up for me it would be great thanks.

A:Which card offers best SLI for budget

Ok i did some research and found some good deal SLI cards i can afford but i'm stuck with the decision between these two cards can you guys tell me which one is better, they are essentially the same price just one has a better rebate which i don't expect to get anytime soon in the next 4,000 years.
The links to both cards are below, help is appreciated.
