Java problems, XP Pro problems, SLOW everything problems...

Q: Java problems, XP Pro problems, SLOW everything problems...

Hi guys

This is my first post in this forum so hello!

Title was difficult to put succinctly so I will describe the problems I'm having.

I recently did a complete re-instal of XP Pro. I wiped all hard drives, installed a new one, physically cleaned inside of PC with air, resat all cards, upgraded to SP3 for first time, installed software slowly and carefully and installed Avira Antivirus, Agnitum Outpost Firewall (disabled Windows Firewall first) and also installed Spybot S&D.

So, I am having various problems that I've never had before:

1. Startup is quite slow - this could be to do with firewall and anti-virus loading up

2. If I have any USB external drives attached and on, the boot will hang

3. My system tray lacks several icons that should be there; volume control, anti-virus

4. Strange things with right-clicking causing system crash - e.g. I grabbed 3 photos off desktop, dropped them onto bin and right-clicked right away to empty bin - system hung and I had to hard crash out and restart PC

5. When I open my new internal second HD, it takes ages to display all the items (a lot of videos) slowly writing out all their dimensions down a list. If I try any right click actions whilst it's doing this, the system hangs

6. Browsers - I use Firefox, have the new v3 installed, I installed latest Java and Flash but have problems with some sites. One relies on Java for its online tutorial I need but all I get is a blank white screen with 'done' in the bottom left corner. I tried watching a video demo on Microsoft's site and it said to install Flash which I already had; the demo just wouldn't play and again sat there idle with 'done' in the corner. Facebook is soooo slow... and as of today, I can't share links, it takes ages, twirls around and around then says, 'done' but nothing has happened.

I searched the forums for similar, and read advice to remove Java and re-install and I got this bad looking message (screen shot included) Any microsft experts know what that might mean?

PS - I haver tried ALL these things with IE and get same problems. I also re-installed Firefox to no avail...

Something is definitely up!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sounds like you got virus or malware. Turn OFF System Restore. Download and install www.malwarebytes.org and run a Full scan. Remove all malware Reboot.

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

thanks for taking a look at this I hope you can help.

About a week ago my comp was running fine and I had no problems. I was using Win XP Pro on my Advent 6414 PIII 1.1 GHz laptop and was using AOL to connject to the internet. I had Anti Virus guard working there too and thought things were ok....

I upgraded the AV Guard but halfway through the setup i had to turn the computer off.

When I started it up on Monday, there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen consisting of really chunky white bars.

The XP screen hung there for ages and when it did finally load, the programs running were prone to freezing. Specific symptoms were the Display Properties panel locking up and then saying there was a WIN32.DLL error (Not Responding) and that it had to shut down. The desktop picture froze and each subsequent time i tried to start the computer it took longer and longer to start. The programs hung for longer and froze earlier and it got to the point where I lost everything. I had to reformat the entire hard drive and re-install XP.

Surely this would have cured the problems despite wiping out my extensive and dare I say excellent music collection..aaaarrghhhh!!
Alas it did not. i have re-installed XP only to find similar re-occurrences of the same problems...programs slow to load, Explorer locks up (the start menu is the main one) and now the pictures that I loaded for my desktop are being halved each time i start up.

I learned my lesson and now have Nor... Read more

A:XP Problems: Slow to load, DLL broken, freezes, modem problems the list goes on..

How much do you know about installing XP?
And, what options did you select during the process?

(No, it's not a simple, linear, process.)
First of all, if you wipe the drive you should do it properly. That is, you get a copy of the Disk Manager software from your hard drive's manufactuer and you use THAT to wipe the Hard Drive from a boot disk. Low-level format the drive, which means you write zeros to the entire drive including the boot sector. That gives you a truely blank drive.

Then when you do the XP install, windows thinks the drive is "Virgin" and does a complete partition and format. No information is retained.

If you wanted to be faste (but lazy) about it, you could just delet the partitions on the drive and then make new partitions, and then install Windows, but let's be sure we've done everytyhing we can to start with a blank slate, shall we?

But you're not done yet: You need to get the device drivers from your PC mfg's website. Otherwise, all the drivers that XP doesn't have aren't there, and your hardware is in "Default" mode (if at all).

NOTE: Before you start to do any of this, check with your OEM to see if they have any special "Non-DOS" partitions on your model of laptop. If they do, all this is for naught: You'll have to get them to put those partitions back on your machine before you begin re-installing.

Compaq did this a few years back to a number of their models, and it was a huge headache to ITs everywhere... Read more

This is my first post here, so I hope that I follow all of the rules. And thanks in advance for any help. My computer has been running slow for a while, and I think one of my kids might have gone to a website that allowed some malware in. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I have noticed a few things, 1. Had a problem with Adobe acrobat reader, it wouldn't update for some reason, and couldn't open PDF files for a while, after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I think it is now working. Also noticed more recently when working in MS Word 03 every once in a while it won't let me save files. Now I am noticing that when I have Internet Explorer open for a while, IE tries to pop open a new window, to which the IP address is blocked by K9 web protection is the IP. After googling this IP address, I found a few posts leading me to think there might be a trojan kicking around on my pc. I have run MBAM and Hijackthis in an attempt to find the culprit, but MBAM comes up clean, and I can't find it on Hijackthis. Any help woould be appreciated.

I bought an eMachines laptop (I know off brand) but it was on Black Friday for $395. In addition, I bought an external hard drive. When I plugged the external hard drive into my laptop; the harddrive downloaded a backup software called Memeo. Hi, about 2 days ago I turned on my pc and many weird things started happening...
first it took a lot of time for the explorer.exe to load, so the desktop or taskbar didn't appear until after maybe 10-15 minutes. Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (bu... Read more

I wonder if anyone can help with a strange problem i'm having with Java on my LAN.

There are two machines on the network, An eMachines 3220 - Celeron 2.8ghz - 80gb HD - 512mb ram - Intel ixtreme graphs - onboard 5.1 sound - Win XP Home - This is the server. The other machine i built myself: PIII 800 - 2x 10gb HDs - 350mb ram - Radeon 9000 series 128mb graphs - Sounblaster 128 sound - Win ME

The problem is on the PIII machine. I play Runescape a lot and when i was using this comp as a standalone system it worked fine, but since i started using it through the network things have gone belly up I'm using an aol connection (AOL Silver, although i have 1mb bandwith for some reason best known to AOL. Not complaining tho... lol). I'm using Net Proxy server software on the server.

What i don't understand is; some Java stuff works fine. For example; For those familiar with Runescape, the world map downloads without a hitch. In fact, it downloads quicker now than before But Java seems unable to boot the game. I also use 321 chat sites occaisionally and although they do work, adverts on the site cause problems with the page layout resulting in me having to minimize the window, then expanding it again to fix the problem. Not an ideal state of affairs.

I've tried fiddling with different flavours of Java, even tried the Windows virtual machine without success.

I've posted a Hijack This log below for anyone in the know to study.

I am unable to install or update Java. The web page says to uninstall the program and reinstall if you are having problems updating. My computer does not have the program listed in the add/remove programs or in the processes in task manager. However when I try to instlall it it says java quick start is running to close it and then proceed. I have installed windows install clean up and it does not show up there either but every attempt to download it does not work. Does any one have any idea how to resolve this? I would be extremely grateful for any help. Thanks!

A:Problems with Java

I have updated my version of Sun Java many times and have never had any problems with elements of older installations interfering with the new install.

You could try a little program called Autoruns which identifies much more than Task Manager can, and which will allow you to disable the Quick Start feature by removing the tick from the relevant box; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx There is an option to run it online which may be all you need just to deal with the one issue. If you download it it doesn't 'install' in the usual way, you get an .exe file which you just have to click on and it starts up

When it first opens it will look very confusing and you should not change any settings until you are sure you have the right one. On my XP Home computer Java Quick Start is listed under ' HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowserHelper Objects' and 'HKLM\System\CurrentControlsSet\Services'.Both are only a short way down the page if you use the 'Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries' feature which is available under the Options tab. Uncheck the boxes by the Java QS entries and then try the new install again.

If anyone has a suggestion or a solution for this, please let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Hey, I haven't had Java in this computer for awhile, but I decided to download it again so I could use Limewire. I download the latest version and it says it is running correctly, but when I fire up Limewire, the window is all distorted and impossible to read. I reinstalled Limewire and even tried an older version, but still the same problem persists.

To see if this was a Java problem, I went to their site and clicked "Test Your Java Virtual Machine (JVM)." When it does test it, it reads:
"Congradulations. The latest version of the JRE is installed and running on your system," but the little image it is suppose to show is all distorted just like Limewire. I've tried reinstalling Java and installing older versions, but to no avail. I've tried all the suggestions on Java's site, as well. Even the Java Contol Panel itself is distorted.

To even further test it, I tried playing Runescape, which is Java based, and other online applets. Strangely enough, Runescape worked perfectly fine! This really baffled me, but any other web based Java game still gives me the distorted image.

So, I rebooted my PC in safe mode, and everything Java related worked. The Java Control Panel, Limewire, etc all worked flawlessly! I have fully updated video and audio drivers, and my Windows is up to date. I have my firewalls and antivirus disabled. Anyone have any idea how I could get Java to work out of safe mode?

I'm having problems with programs that use java where the window will appear, but actual graphics are not displayed. Banking websites don't usually require Java, but they do require that "JavaScript" is enabled in your web-browser, and this is entirely unrelated to Java despite the similar name. Instructions for all the popular web-browsers are here: http://www.enable-javascript.com/

I'll try and make this as short as possible. Recently I haven't been able to access some of the features on my broker's website. They put out a troubleshooting bulletin saying that many people were having problems and what you needed to do was clear you Java cache and everything should work fine. I went to do that and my Java cache won't clear for love or money. I've tried many times and I keep getting the message "Can not uninstall these applications." It's kind of frustrating but Java seems to be working normally everywhere else. I've run my McAfee Internet Security virus scan as well as Malware bytes and they can't find any infections that might be causing this so I'm not sure why it won't clear the cache? I've heard this isn't an uncommon problem with Java also.

The second thing is that recently I updated Java thinking that might be helpful. I was running Version 6 Update 31 which was out of date so I installed Version 7 Update 5. Still no luck getting the cache to clear. What got me though is that when I checked by programs list the version 6 update 31 hadn't uninstalled itself. It was still on my programs list along with version 7 update 5. I've heard it said that you shouldn't be running two versions of Java at the same time because you are asking for trouble it you do so I tried to uninstall the older one. When I tried it came up that it was an unknown publisher. I thought that was ... Read more

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , Service Pack 1, 64 bit
I have a problem with Java; this is preventing me from playing a game called Minecraft as well as other java related programs.

The problem i have is called "Java error 1723" the full error message is as follows:
Error 1723. There is a problem with this windows installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run.

This error message occurs whenever i try to install and or uninstall Java from my computer.

I have looked on the Java website and a variety of forums and they all say you must unistall Java and then install both windows installer and Java; however i cannot follow these steps as whenever I try to uninstall Java the error comes up.

Another step is to re-download windows installer but all the links provided say they don't coincide with my operating system.

I have tried these automated fix programs but they have done nothing to help the problem.

Please someone help me, this is driving me crazy as i cannot do alot without it.

I'm running Xp Pro and I haven't been able to get java working on my computer. I have Microsofts jvm installed and i've tried Suns verions 1.4.2_01-05 and java still won't work properly. What happens is this, webpages on the internet explore only seem to function correctly when using microsoft jvm.

However in order to code in java and run my own programs I use Suns java. When I try to run a java program, my whole screen goes black and then just the window that the java program is making is shown. But no buttons or anything are shown in that window. Its an empty window. In order to get my screen back i have to right click and click on refresh but that still doesn't make it so i can see my java program.

I've even tried uninstalling both and just using one at a time but it still won't work. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine and Sun Microsystem's Java runtime are both products of Sun Microsystems. The JVM is licensed by Sun for use by Microsoft.

I wouldn't become too dependent on Java technology, as Microsoft's license extension under Sun Microsystems is announced to expire in 2007. I am uncertain as to what runtime Microsoft intends to replace it with (I suspect VB).

First, I would be absolutely sure that you are developing your programs in the same version of Java as your installed runtimes. Then, I would try adjusting display settings and seeing if that makes any difference.

If no positive results occur, you should contact Sun Microsystems for help and support. I am not sure exactly what kind of help you could gain from Microsoft or it's users, as Java is being phased out as we speak.

Good Luck!

My employer has a portal where we go to read our email, etc. They set up a new Time Card system where we record our time online now.
We are supposed to update to JS2E Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11.
I cannot for the life of me uninstall the JS2E. I can't find it in my add/remove programs. I used Revo Uninstaller and it found it but said something like "this button is to remove only programs installed" meaning it isn't detecting that it's installed.
I ran a command prompt and it is installed but isn't the latest version.
I have been to Java website, written them an email, tried to download and install the update but it always fails with no error number.
I have downloaded JS2E Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 but when I click on it it never will open.
I am at my wits end with this. I know my Java is messed up because in my employers portal there are things I cannot see.
I use IE version 6. I got this problem corrected one time as I reformatted so a clean install did the trick. But I am nowhere near reformatting again.
Java website is no help at all.

Starting yesterday, I have been having a problem with Java. Almost every Java program or applet I have tried to run has not worked. Everything from Minecraft to Java's own website is not working. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java multiple times, yet it still doesn't work. The only think I have found that still works is Project Zomboid, which is already downloaded to my computer.

It appears that it is only Java stuff that involves the internet does not work. I have tried multiple browsers but nothing has worked. Thanks for any help.

What operating system do you have? When you try to run programs with Javascript what does it say? Does it give you an error message or just not work?

Edit: Make sure you have the latest Windows updates on your computer.

Got a couple questions for you...

First was your old system using the XP operating system too?

Second, How is this program installed (CD, Download off I-net, etc)

Third which version of Java did you download?

When the game does load and you are hardly able to see items on the game... is it everything (desktop, other programs too) that you have a hard time reading or just the game itself?

Yes there are several versions of Java out there, and some applications are specific to what you can use with them. Most often when you get a game and install it on your computer the required java is installed with it. Being that I am not familiar with amishdonkey as a game I am limited by what I can tell you at this moment, but these questions should help others as well as myself narrow down the issue.

I'm not seeing any serious malware in that log. Your java may have become corrupted...

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP which is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system.
Remove it in Add/Remove Programs and fix the items identified below. Your call.

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it!

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Clean Traces - C:\Program Files\DAP\Privacy Package\dapcleanerie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie2.htm

Delete this folder if you've chosen to uninstall DAP:

C:\Program Files\DAP

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files (if present)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

i use java applets for chat. not because it is better imo, but because it is (usually) convenient. but suddenly, for no apparent reason, i can no longer click on links that people send in the chats.

usually single clicking will open another window which will open the site (mainly pictures). now all i can do is highlight that text. i have tried double clicking, pressing alt or shift or control while i click, and searching the controls for anything that even hints at allowing me to enable links.

it is not the firewall, and it is not the anti-virus. i have tried disabling these.

is there a chat command that will enable the ability to click on links?

oh, and the chat i usually join is a part of everywherechat.

(also, is there a site that lists all commands that i can use in chat?)

I'm not an expert at reading those logs. However, I can see that you're running some sort of adblocking program. You'll need to check the settings of that program. Many adblockers will block java by default. Also, you'll need to check your IE Security Settings to see if you're allowing Java.
