Q: Java problems, XP Pro problems, SLOW everything problems...

Hi guys

This is my first post in this forum so hello!

Title was difficult to put succinctly so I will describe the problems I'm having.

I recently did a complete re-instal of XP Pro. I wiped all hard drives, installed a new one, physically cleaned inside of PC with air, resat all cards, upgraded to SP3 for first time, installed software slowly and carefully and installed Avira Antivirus, Agnitum Outpost Firewall (disabled Windows Firewall first) and also installed Spybot S&D.

So, I am having various problems that I've never had before:

1. Startup is quite slow - this could be to do with firewall and anti-virus loading up

2. If I have any USB external drives attached and on, the boot will hang

3. My system tray lacks several icons that should be there; volume control, anti-virus

4. Strange things with right-clicking causing system crash - e.g. I grabbed 3 photos off desktop, dropped them onto bin and right-clicked right away to empty bin - system hung and I had to hard crash out and restart PC

5. When I open my new internal second HD, it takes ages to display all the items (a lot of videos) slowly writing out all their dimensions down a list. If I try any right click actions whilst it's doing this, the system hangs

6. Browsers - I use Firefox, have the new v3 installed, I installed latest Java and Flash but have problems with some sites. One relies on Java for its online tutorial I need but all I get is a blank white screen with 'done' in the bottom left corner. I tried watching a video demo on Microsoft's site and it said to install Flash which I already had; the demo just wouldn't play and again sat there idle with 'done' in the corner. Facebook is soooo slow... and as of today, I can't share links, it takes ages, twirls around and around then says, 'done' but nothing has happened.

I searched the forums for similar, and read advice to remove Java and re-install and I got this bad looking message (screen shot included) Any microsft experts know what that might mean?

PS - I haver tried ALL these things with IE and get same problems. I also re-installed Firefox to no avail...

Something is definitely up!

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Java problems, XP Pro problems, SLOW everything problems...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sounds like you got virus or malware. Turn OFF System Restore. Download and install www.malwarebytes.org and run a Full scan. Remove all malware Reboot.

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

Hi,

thanks for taking a look at this I hope you can help.

About a week ago my comp was running fine and I had no problems. I was using Win XP Pro on my Advent 6414 PIII 1.1 GHz laptop and was using AOL to connject to the internet. I had Anti Virus guard working there too and thought things were ok....

I upgraded the AV Guard but halfway through the setup i had to turn the computer off.

When I started it up on Monday, there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen consisting of really chunky white bars.

The XP screen hung there for ages and when it did finally load, the programs running were prone to freezing. Specific symptoms were the Display Properties panel locking up and then saying there was a WIN32.DLL error (Not Responding) and that it had to shut down. The desktop picture froze and each subsequent time i tried to start the computer it took longer and longer to start. The programs hung for longer and froze earlier and it got to the point where I lost everything. I had to reformat the entire hard drive and re-install XP.

Surely this would have cured the problems despite wiping out my extensive and dare I say excellent music collection..aaaarrghhhh!!
Alas it did not. i have re-installed XP only to find similar re-occurrences of the same problems...programs slow to load, Explorer locks up (the start menu is the main one) and now the pictures that I loaded for my desktop are being halved each time i start up.

I learned my lesson and now have Nor... Read more

How much do you know about installing XP?
And, what options did you select during the process?

(No, it's not a simple, linear, process.)
First of all, if you wipe the drive you should do it properly. That is, you get a copy of the Disk Manager software from your hard drive's manufactuer and you use THAT to wipe the Hard Drive from a boot disk. Low-level format the drive, which means you write zeros to the entire drive including the boot sector. That gives you a truely blank drive.

Then when you do the XP install, windows thinks the drive is "Virgin" and does a complete partition and format. No information is retained.

If you wanted to be faste (but lazy) about it, you could just delet the partitions on the drive and then make new partitions, and then install Windows, but let's be sure we've done everytyhing we can to start with a blank slate, shall we?

But you're not done yet: You need to get the device drivers from your PC mfg's website. Otherwise, all the drivers that XP doesn't have aren't there, and your hardware is in "Default" mode (if at all).

NOTE: Before you start to do any of this, check with your OEM to see if they have any special "Non-DOS" partitions on your model of laptop. If they do, all this is for naught: You'll have to get them to put those partitions back on your machine before you begin re-installing.

Compaq did this a few years back to a number of their models, and it was a huge headache to ITs everywhere... Read more

Hi,
This is my first post here, so I hope that I follow all of the rules. And thanks in advance for any help. My computer has been running slow for a while, and I think one of my kids might have gone to a website that allowed some malware in. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I have noticed a few things, 1. Had a problem with Adobe acrobat reader, it wouldn't update for some reason, and couldn't open PDF files for a while, after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I think it is now working. Also noticed more recently when working in MS Word 03 every once in a while it won't let me save files. Now I am noticing that when I have Internet Explorer open for a while, IE tries to pop open a new window, to which the IP address is blocked by K9 web protection 91.212.226.6 is the IP. After googling this IP address, I found a few posts leading me to think there might be a trojan kicking around on my pc. I have run MBAM and Hijackthis in an attempt to find the culprit, but MBAM comes up clean, and I can't find it on Hijackthis. Any help woould be appreciated.
Thanks!

I bought an eMachines laptop (I know off brand) but it was on Black Friday for $395. In addition, I bought an external hard drive. When I plugged the external hard drive into my laptop; the harddrive downloaded a backup software called Memeo. This backup software would pop up everytime I downloaded something or wanted to uninstall or open a file. So I eventually uninstalled the backup software (MEMEO) and my computer began to run EXTREMELY sluggish and slow. 1. I ran a Nortan scan believing that it would fix my computer situation. Hi, about 2 days ago I turned on my pc and many weird things started happening...
first it took a lot of time for the explorer.exe to load, so the desktop or taskbar didn't appear until after maybe 10-15 minutes. Then, the taskbar looked really weird, it seemed like it had been cut horizontally, so you couldn't get to see the whole lower part of the taskbar (and it wasn't the screen size config... since I tried changing that and it didn't work). I thought it might be some kind of virus, so I opened Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I got the following message:

Then also I noticed I can't paste anything anywhere... or drag things, so I can't copy paste things or cut-paste things... then since yesterday I no longer have a taskbar... and I also can't use the search function (not even when I go into My PC and click on the search icon... a frame appears on the left, just as it should, but it just stays blue)
Also, when I go into taskmanager, and go to processes the Username under all processes is blank (except for one: Inactive process... under SYSTEM) when normally many of them were under Administrator and others.

Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (bu... Read more

Hey all. I'm going nuts with Sun Java here. When the application is needed for a website, I'm told Java isn't on this machine, though I downloaded and installed it from Sun's site. When using Firefox browser, it says to install the missing plug-in. I try and do that and when install is finishing up, I'm told it already exists on my system. It then says to un-install it through Add/Remove Programs, then re-install it. I have two listings under Add/Remove Programs for Java, J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 2, and J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 4. When I try to remove either one of them, it only tries to do an install, then tells me it's already installed. When I went to test my Java on Sun's site, it couldn't find it in my PC. BTW, Adobe has been acting up lately too. When trying to access a PDF file on the net, I'm told Acrobat Reader doesn't exist in my PC, yet it's right there on the desktop. I'm able to open the program from there and it seems ok. I've uninstalled and re-installed Adobe several times over the past few weeks, but it keeps happening to me after using it just a couple of times. I scan disk and defrag almost daily on my Win 98 SE machine. 256 MB SDR RAM, 466 Celeron processor, 120 gig Maxtor Hard Drive. Nod32 Anti-virus finds nothing wrong. Same with Trojan Hunter 4 and AdAware SE Plus. Any help is appreciated.

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have Windows XP Home SP3 and have only been online for around 2 and a half months. Everything worked like a dream...until around a week ago

After startup everything seems to work normally, but after a while anything that (I assume) uses java starts to behave odd.

Videos online (Youtube, Liveleak, etc) won't play until they've completely loaded. It shows the current and total timers as 00:00. pressing the download button from rapidshare (the button that appears after waiting) doesn't bring up the save dialog until it appears to have donwloaded it (I have Networx running and it shows download activity after pressing the button). This also seems to happen now with all downloads.

A little time after this, the whole computer starts to be sluggish. This is all fixed by doing a restart but today I booted up and has gone straight to these problems but has not yet started to be sluggish.

I have tried both Firefox (3.5.2) and Internet Explorer 8 with the same result. I only use Firefox and even tried resetting it all back to default and removing what few plugins I had.

I've been using ProcessExplorer and AutoStart along side FreeRamXP Pro to see if it's something gobbling memory and not releasing but I'm at a loss

Trying to think back, I'm not sure if this all started after Updating Kaspersky Internet Security to 2010 (It was 2009. Note: originally had Mcafee that came from BT but bought Kaspersky instead) or after the lat... Read more

Hello,

I'm not very new to the Windows Vista XP 64-bit operating system, but I'm not very experienced either. It's still hard for me to find out problems with my computer, and when a week or two ago my computer started having random windows pop open, I couldn't figure out how to solve them. I was hoping if someone could help me out or has had this problem before:

A handful of times every day, a random Internet window pops up, saying that Internet Explorer could not display the webpage. My wireless internet is functional and connected, and my Internet browsing settings have not been altered. I ran a McAfee virus scan around the time this problem arose, but no viruses or damaged files were found. I'm also running IE 7, and as far as I know I have all the updates. The only clue I have is the URL:
<javascript:history.back();> I opened up my Java program, but I couldn't find any apparent problems... I can't find a specific link between each time this window pops up, either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

For some reason or another, Java applets and programs wont work. I checked to see if the updated version was installed. It is and when I test it on Java website with Firefox, it displayed fine. Yet, when I run the same test in IE8, a x appears in the lefthand corner where a moving pic should be. It even sometimes say that the addons for it is disabled, even though in Internet Options, it says it is. It doesnt make sense. I uninstalled it, and it seems that it did the same to IE7 too. I dont have a clue why its doing it, I've uninstalled, registry fix, ccleaned, restarted, and reinstalled, but still the same thing. Sometimes I can try to open IE8 and it says that its sending a windows report, so I'm thinking it has to do something with a addon.

I have Vista Home Premium, I got Java 6 Update 13, IE8, and for addons, I got:

Got a couple questions for you...

First was your old system using the XP operating system too?

Second, How is this program installed (CD, Download off I-net, etc)

Third which version of Java did you download?

When the game does load and you are hardly able to see items on the game... is it everything (desktop, other programs too) that you have a hard time reading or just the game itself?

Yes there are several versions of Java out there, and some applications are specific to what you can use with them. Most often when you get a game and install it on your computer the required java is installed with it. Being that I am not familiar with amishdonkey as a game I am limited by what I can tell you at this moment, but these questions should help others as well as myself narrow down the issue.

I have a user that needs to run Java 6u7, it's installed on her system. She accidentally installed Java 7. I was uninstalling 7 when it erred and quit. Uninstall didn't work for it anymore, so I ran the MS Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, this seemed to have removed the installation that had a problem. To be clean I also removed Java 6u7 and reinstalled it. IE and Firefox both think still that there is no Java installed on the system, even though it's clearly there and visible in the add remove programs. Reinstalled 7, then removed it. Java Test page now sees that there is an old version installed but cannot launch it.

This is all because our instance of Oracle require Jave 6u7, otherwise I would have no issue instaliong the newest version.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

What could you need Java 6 Update 7 for? Running such a outdated version of Java runs HUGE security risks for the PC.

I already tried un-installing and re-installing the most up to date versions of java 6 and mozilla, but i have no idea what else to do. I get these see through boxes only on certain pages. I no longer use IE. The only browser that doesn't do this whole see-through thing is Safari. This is the only problem i have had with browsing.

I'm not an expert at reading those logs. However, I can see that you're running some sort of adblocking program. You'll need to check the settings of that program. Many adblockers will block java by default. Also, you'll need to check your IE Security Settings to see if you're allowing Java.

Luck!

Since this is happening on all three browsers, the problem is not with Java but more likely the problem is in your security or firewall settings. That's what I would look at.

While in facebook I clicked on a link from a friend for Smoking Hot Bartenders that took me to some wesbsite that didn't even really work correctly. I didn't think much of it at the time but it must have been a virus of some sorts. Later that day I tried to do some internet banking on the USAA website where I'm typically able to deposit checks via my scanner. I got an error message then saying there was a problem with security of the Scan Applet for Java. I called USAA bank and they determined it to be a Java problem. I uninstalled Java and then tried to re-install. That re-install was successful, but just after the screen saying it was successfull I get an error message saying that the Installer creatfile failed with error 5.Anyone seen this before? Seems like its not letting me uninstall Java properly and then re-install? This problem with the USAA site and Java has been the only issues I've detected. Please let me know your thoughts. Much thanks! Kevin

I'm not seeing any serious malware in that log. Your java may have become corrupted...

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP which is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system.
Remove it in Add/Remove Programs and fix the items identified below. Your call.

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it!

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Clean Traces - C:\Program Files\DAP\Privacy Package\dapcleanerie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie2.htm

Delete this folder if you've chosen to uninstall DAP:

C:\Program Files\DAP

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files (if present)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

I wonder if anyone can help with a strange problem i'm having with Java on my LAN.

There are two machines on the network, An eMachines 3220 - Celeron 2.8ghz - 80gb HD - 512mb ram - Intel ixtreme graphs - onboard 5.1 sound - Win XP Home - This is the server. The other machine i built myself: PIII 800 - 2x 10gb HDs - 350mb ram - Radeon 9000 series 128mb graphs - Sounblaster 128 sound - Win ME

The problem is on the PIII machine. I play Runescape a lot and when i was using this comp as a standalone system it worked fine, but since i started using it through the network things have gone belly up I'm using an aol connection (AOL Silver, although i have 1mb bandwith for some reason best known to AOL. Not complaining tho... lol). I'm using Net Proxy server software on the server.

What i don't understand is; some Java stuff works fine. For example; For those familiar with Runescape, the world map downloads without a hitch. In fact, it downloads quicker now than before But Java seems unable to boot the game. I also use 321 chat sites occaisionally and although they do work, adverts on the site cause problems with the page layout resulting in me having to minimize the window, then expanding it again to fix the problem. Not an ideal state of affairs.

I've tried fiddling with different flavours of Java, even tried the Windows virtual machine without success.

I've posted a Hijack This log below for anyone in the know to study.

I'm having problems with programs that use java where the window will appear, but actual graphics are not displayed. Although I can't see the graphics, I can still click on links if I know where they are. It seems like the java is working, but there is maybe a conflict. I have tried all of the obvious things such as completely uninstalling java, and re-downloading from various locations. I have also downloaded different versions of java with no luck. Sometimes by minimizing and maximizing numerous times some of the graphics will eventually appear.

This really is a big problem for me as a lot of my programs use java, and I also have problems with some websites that use java.

Any help would be appreciated. My graphics card is 'ATi mobility Radeon 9600'

Hello,

For the past few days I have had a Java problem, or what I was told was a Java problem.

Three sites I have been trying to access will not load. They all take Java to run correctly. I have been told to install the new Java, which I did. Even with the new one installed and the old removed, I am still having some problems. I was told it could be Vista causing the problems, but I have gone on these websites before. So I know that is not it.

I really don't know what information to give to help out with this, other than I currently have Java(TM) 6 Update 3, and am using Windows Vista.

Thank you for the help in advance.

I know I have it enabled for my browser because I enabled it under the control panel, but it still doesn't work. And I don't know much about firewalls but would I know if I have one? Or could my ISP have one setup with me out knowing it, and if so how do I customize the settings. Also, when I try to Direct Connect with people over AIM it usually doesn't work, it says im trying to connect but then it never does. That happens like everytime and I was just wondering if anyone knew why?

Thanks for your help ")

A:Java and other problems

Do you have a router on your internet connection? If so that is probably acting as a firewall. A firewall could also be a piece of software like Zone Alarm.

It is also possible for your ISP, actually most likely they do, to have a firewall between you and the Internet that is blocking certain ports.

If you do have a firewall then the direct connect option will probably not work as the firewall is blocking it

I ran Secunia several times today on both FF and IE. At first gave me 3 patches - all java but when I tried to install wouldn't and then would give me the following message when trying to run Secunia again : "There might be problems loading the Java Applet in your browser. If you are sure that Java is installed (version 1.6 or later) and functional, then please press OK and proceed anyway.

I reinstalled java and got it working again but then it tells me that I still need JavaJRE_7u9_32-bit_SPS.exe.part - I've tried running several times and it doesn't load and get the same message about java as above.

Is this a bad patch?

How can I fix everything. Do I need to totally uninstall and reinstall Java?

I have screen shots but can't find how to attach.

I just ran again and it now says I need Oracle Java JRE 1.7.x/.7.x is insecure but won't update it with the link tried multiple times.

Hi -Can you look in Control Panel and find the Java Icon -Click on this and when it opens, the second tab is Update - Click Update, and it will tell you if you have the latest version (7 Update 9) -If you do not, it should update for you - Then remove all older versions from Programs and Features -
