EXE setup file wont load

Q: EXE setup file wont load

I am using flight sim, I downloaded an addon file that is an exe.file, when I double click it nothing happens or starts. I tried downloaded the same file at work, that is Vista as well, and when I double click it works.

Funny thing when I view the iconat work it is the computer set up icon, at home it looks like a folder, when I right click it at home it says application (exe).

Any thoughts of why it wont load at home, some setting that is not up to date?

Office computer is the 32 bit and I beleive my home is 64 version, would that make a difference?

Preferred Solution: EXE setup file wont load

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A symptom of this often appears as shortcuts become .LNK files where the .LNK extension shows up and none of them work.

Hey there,
Iím trying to run a repair on my friends Compaq Presario 1245 but I have a strange problem. Every time I boot into setup, it will load the setup files and then just try to start windows up. The setup program will boot from the CD, load the drivers and whatnot, but instead of going into the actual setup process (where you can install a clean copy, repair etc), it just tries to boot to Windows automatically (Which doesnít work).

I've tried it even with a Windows 2003 CD and the same thing happens. I have went and reset the bios to their factory settings just in case for a session but that doesn't seem to be the problem (the CMOS battery is dead anyways). I was told the CMOS battery being dead might be the problem but its never really been and issue for me before when Ive worked on laptops (with dead CMOS batteries)

Any help to this would be appreciated as my friend has a bunch of tuning maps for his car.

Hello, all

Once again i need some help.

PC: Gateway
Model: MX6421
OS: Win XP Media Center 2005
Ram: 512

While still in the hands of the owner the PC kept shutting down on its own, like it was over heating.
So he tried to use his restore dvd and it shut down in the middle of the operation.
now the only thing i can get is the first part of the restoration process.
I have tried to load win XP from a known good disk and it fails saying "file setup.sys could not be loaded" or it shuts down at the same point in the loading process.

Thank you, jpass

I cant get windows XP to load at all

Here's the problem......... On boot up I get a black screen and then a error message saying <WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED < WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\ ntoskrnl.exe> please re-install a copy of the above file.

Windows wont load so I can not use system restore or even go into safe mode.
How can I get around windows and get this file " NTOSKRNL.EXE" into system32 folder without windows being able to load ???

Also I have a HP computer which did not come with a windows XP CD. XP is hidden on a partition on the hard drive.
So that kind of leaves out being able to use the CD to repair windows and using the Repair "R" key during bootup.

So how can I get into windows long enough to be able to repair the NTOSKRNL.EXE file ??
Any and all suggestions would be so much appreciated !!!!

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.
Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"
The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"
I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

A:Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.
I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."
Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.
Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0
Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."
Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"
BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files
Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

I've broken my desktop pc and I've tried to sort it but my skills are pretty minimal so it would be great if anyone could give me a bit of advice or point me in the right direction.

Here's a description of what happened:
After using my pc I went to turn it off as normal but I switched off the socket too soon, as the pc hadn't finished shutting down.
When I went to restart it, it seemed to be ok but before it booted up properly i got this message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Unfortunately I dont have the original setup CD-ROM, but I do have a copy of windows xp home.
I booted the pc from this disk and I pressed 'r' which took me to the recovery console, I'm well and truly stuck here, I dont know how to operate the recovery console.
Does anyone know how I can repair my pc from here or is there anything else I can do?
Many thanks in advance,

I downloaded Kapersky internet security 7.0. It was working good for a couple days, and then it identified some file that was named something like win32/winlogon.exe, as behaving suspiciously. So I quarantined it, and then the computer shut down, and when it restarted, it went throught that initial Windows loading page, and then right before I get to the part where I choose which account to log into the computer with, the computer restarts. I have tried to run the computer in safe mode, and done like all the options in that screen, like restoring last known settings or whatever. The only thing I didn't do on that menu was something where you type commands, and I dont know how to do that kind of thing, nor did I even know my password to start the process lol..

Some people have told me to try fixing Windows with the Windows Recovery CD that comes with the computer.. but I lost this a couple years ago when I moved. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1135CL, I have Windows XP Home, with service pack 2. I contacted HP to try to get a new recovery cd but the person I talked to said he couldn't help because my warranty ran out. But he said if I paid 59 dollars, he could connect me to a technician who could solve the problem in a matter of seconds.. So I don't know if the problem is actually something very easy to fix or if he was just trying to scam me into paying for a service..

sorry so long, thanx for reading

A:windows wont load b/c missing system file

Winlogon.exe is used to facilitate logins/logoffs and is a necessary file. If you could find another XP Home disc you can repair the OS and that should fix it. Other than that you could try copying that file from a working computer and put it in the folder where it is supposed to be although i don't know if that method will work or not. And the HP guy was probably going to tell you to use the CD to fix it in a matter of seconds.

This is only happening on my Win7 computer. About 20% of the time, I'll either get "the connection was reset", or the page will only load some text.
If I restore to windows default host file, all is fine. Except of course I get the annoying ad popups and stuff.
My 2 other xp computers are using the same MVPS hosts file and the same web pages load fine, with popups being blocked by the hosts file.
This started about 2 months ago.
I tried Firefox in safe mode, no help. Internet Explorer does it, too.
I tried offloading firewall, no help. Rebooted router, no help. Reinstalled Firefox, no help.
I deleted all temp internet files, cookies, no help.
The only thing that fixes it is restoring to the default Windows hosts file.
The only way I can see my websites is to refresh over and over till they load. Might take 5 times, maybe 10.

A:Websites wont fully load with MVPS hosts file....

Alright I fixed it. I'm using F-Secure anti-virus (free from my isp). When I un-checked the "scan and remove viruses from web traffic" the problem disappeared.
I still have "real-time scanning" and "browsing protection".

Okay, here goes..
I am having serious trouble reinstalling windows. My system is:
P4 3.8
1gig ram
MSI 925XE Neo board with Intel 925XE chipset
2 Maxtor 250gig hard drives in RAID 0 (stripped) (i think)

I seem to be missing vital files for the Intel 82801FR SATA RAID controller.
Whats happens is; I run my recovery disk, press F6 to load the controller drivers and insert the floppy. I then choose the SCSI adaptor from the list (82801FR). It then seems to load the file 'iaStor.sys'. After then pressing enter, setup loads some more files then gives me the option to delete the existing partition and then select the unpartitioned space. I then choose to format the partition using NTFS. Then it formats and shows this info;

c/partition 1 (new Raw) 478742 free space
478742 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on iaStor (MBR)

Once the formatting is finished i recieve the message;

Set up cannot copy the file: iaStor.sys
To skip press esc
To quit press F3

When i skip the file it says;
Setup cannot copy the file: iaStor.inf
When i skip this it says;
Setup cannot copy the file: iaStor.cat

If i continue the installation, the pc blue screens when windows boots up.

What the hell is happening here?!? I have mutiple floppies from various sources containing these files (i think) but none of them work.

These are the files i have on the floppies;

iastor - system file - 457kb
iaahci - security catalog - 8kb
iaahci - setup information - 3kb
iastor - security catalog - 8kb
iastor - setup inf... Read more

A:"Setup cannot load the file: iaStor.sys" My god please help!!

As you seem to have already determined Windows needs to load the drivers for the HDD(s) very early in the installation process, and normally these would be loaded from a floppy as you are doing.

You seem to be a little unsure of what exactly you have in terms of your physical hard disks. For a start it is essential that you obtain the correct drivers for whatever configuration you have decided upon. Normally the best place to obtain these is from the manufacturers site. (See link below).

In the raw state disks have relatively little (if any) "intelligence". The "intelligence" comes from the driver. Now the same model of disk (e.g. a Maxtor 6L250R0) can be configured in a number of ways, depending on which driver you use and with some models you may have to actually set a jumper on the motherboard (Most Maxtor SATA disks don't require a jumper setting - even if the installation instructions say they do - so check the latest information sheet carefully).

While you are visiting the disk manufacturers site make sure that you search the Knowledgebase for information relevant to what you are trying to do.

Drivers are often Region-specific, so make sure that you go to the correct site depending on where you live. Click the link below and then on the top Menu Bar click on Worldwide Support, select your Region from the map and then select your preferred language. The site contains a wealth of information, all the current driivers as downloads and contact i... Read more

Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. Now with internet issue, it works in safe mode with connection, but not in my normal screen. WHY IS THIS DOING THIS?

Hello there,
It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.
Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:
1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.
4. Accept the Windows license agreement.
5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.
6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.
7. Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal.
First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly.
After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects. someone please help

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.

Hi everybody.
I got dell latitude d800 laptop with dead display and without os (supposed to be XP, sticker is intact).
Hunting for affordable good shape lcd panel will take a while so I made unattended cd with nlite and installed XP but external monitor didn't fire up
I checked the installation with live CD and it looks like complete install so I got an idea that the install is lacking dell drivers particularly video driver (nvidia fx 5200 go card).
Even more: it's possibly lacking any video driver 'cause native display was disconnected.
So I have to somehow inject video driver and force setup to install it. Then XP must fire up external monitor and then I can update all the drivers.
I read about winnt.sif and $OEM$/Drivers directory but that all about "naked" drivers like .sys .cat .inf ... but the drivers I got from dell have also .dll .exe and other files but nvidia driver even has its own setup.exe.
How to make XP setup to install such drivers during unattended setup?

Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

When I start up my pc, I get a screen that says, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change may have caused this, ….etc."
Then I am offered with a bunch of options to either:

1) Start in Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt
4) Start Windows Normally
5) Last Known Good Configuration

None of them work, the safe mode ones, show a bunch of lines of code as per normal when starting up safe mode, then it freezes and stops and eventually goes back to the screen mentioned above. Same for 4 and 5, windows blue loading bar screen comes up, then the screen turns black and nothing. After a few mins my computer restarts again and goes back to the screen mentioned above.

Prior to my computer not being able to restart/load windows. I had some pop up vundu trojans i was trying to remove. Did some research after about 5 hours finally removed it. A couple days after i started receiving "generic host process error" Something to do with explorer.exe program. So i ctrl + alt + del and explorer.exe was taking up 100 cpu usage. At this point i tried to minimize task manager and my computer froze up. I waited about an hour came back and still nothing so i manually turned off my computer and turned back on. And now it will not restart. I have no idea where my windows xp disks are or even if i have them. I found what appears to be the solution to my explorer.exe pr... Read more

Our family computer is randomly having trouble connecting to the internet when loading some web pages or web pages wont load. I occasionally have the same problem with my laptop but never at the same time. Which leads me to believe it is not likely my router. Would that be correct? My wife plays alot of games from Yahoo Games. Could that be a source of some of the problems?

I have some of the tools I believe will be needed to clean the system loaded to my desktop ready to go. I need some direction to be sure I don't go out of order and cause a bigger problem.

Thank you

Do you have more then 1 computer connected to your modem/router? If so, does this happen on them? If not, can you connect a separate one (ex: friend's laptop) to test?

Normally when you get errors like this it's best to rule out a problem at the modem/router and provider before going crazy over trying to fix a problem (that may not exist) on your PC(s).

Also just a couple of other questions:

Who is your internet provider (ISP)?
What connection type do they use (Cable/DSL/Fiber/Fixed Wireless/Mobile Wireless)?
What is the make and model of your router and modem?

It appears that you have already posted a hijackthis log here. Please be patient while waiting for assistance. HJT Helpers are all volunteers regardless where you post a log. While waiting for a response, you should not ask for help elsewhere or make changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc.) Any modifications you make on your own can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the HJT Helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. If you had posted your log here, similar rules would apply. We would ask that you be patient while awaiting a reply and refrain from asking for help elsewhere. If you followed any other advice already, please ensure you inform the HJT Team Helper when they respond to assist you with your log. This will help them know what has been done and they probably will ask for an updated log.To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. I have minimal things load on startup of my pc

Any help with this problem would be great

A:Some Pages wont load at all and others load fine

Try running a ping to the sites that have trouble loading to see what kind of connection times you are looking at. I would also run a tracert to those sites to see if there are any places dropping the connection.

Nothing will load on my Compaq Presario 700 notebook. It wont even turn on in safe mode.
When I go to turn it on it sounds like the hard drive attempts to spin. I don't hear the fans, but all the lights come on. The battery is fairly new and everything is plugged in properly.
All this began when I was running Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and it locked up forcing me to shut down.
Any ideas?

I have dictionary called the Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic

anyway, i have the ISO file
i installed it on Win7 x32 with no problem

but i tried to install it on Winx64 but it says an error like "the setup file is not compatible with Win7 x64"

I tried to search for the x64 version but i had no success, google sometimes becomes lame u know....
I tried to just copy the already installed dictionary folders to Win7x64 but it didnt open cuz it seems that it needs to be installed

So is there any way to like edit that setup.exe file or something to work on x64 version cuz it seems if i can just bypass that step it will work

or like a work around the "copy whole folders" and get it to work
I really need some help with it,
thanks in advance,

A:Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

sometimes 32 bit applications have 16 bit installer and that won 't work on 64 bit system, but if this is not the case did you try to run installer in compatibility mode? (right click/properties/compatibility). Installer generally does three things: creates program directory, copies some DLL files to system directory and writes some data into registry. You could trace those things in Win32 installation and try manually recreate this on 64bit machine, but who knows if it will work. Also search for portable version, those don't require installation and frankly now a days I don't use anything else but portable applications unless there is no other way.

hi guys

I've been trying to install a program , but the setup.exe wont load, when i double click on it, it starts to read it, then it simply stops and does nothing.

I've tried to run the setup from the cd, then copied the entire folder to my computer, and ran the set up again, but it did the same thing, the folder is not compressed or anything. Could it be my antivirus preventing from opening the setup? its the first time that it has happened.

Any info on this would be highly appreciated.

Hi Joe, Welcome to TSF!
When the installation set up completes for the first time, it will reboot; however, this time put your hands in your pockets, and don't touch the keyboard, when the screen saying "Boot from CD....press any key to boot from CD" (or something like that) appears, just let the installation do its own thing.
It will automatically proceed to the next phase of the installation.

Try the installation again, but this time follow the 'tip' given here.

Good Luck with it.

Post back with the result, and if you have any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD before the HDD.
Boot up with the XP CD in the drive.

I was having problems with my Maple Story, so I un-installed and re-downloaded the program. However, when I tried to open the setup wizard, it gave me the error:

Error reading setup initialization file

I looked online for troubleshooting solutions, and I have so far found two options:

-Re-download because the error could be the result of a failed download that wasn't identified when the file was downloaded.

-Find and delete old files that could be stopping the file from being reaad properly.

I need help with the second solution, as in how I search for those files. Also, any other solutions for this problem would be much appreciated.

Hey Everyone,

So I've been running Win7 for a while, I would consider myself a pretty advanced user... So being stumped here really bothers me.

The basics:
Computer: Dell XPS1530, T8600, 4GB Ram, 500GB 7200rpm drive.
Updated 7-Zip, prompted restart. I restarted.
Computer BSOD's every boot now (Safe Mode, Normal, Last Known Good Config, etc).
When it begins to boot it recommends I go into Recovery Mode. If I do that, it goes to the basic Login Screen, but there's nothing displayed at all. It just sits there (I've left it alone for 20-30 minutes).

So at that point I was like, well even if I did recover, I would prefer a fresh install so might as well install...

So I go to install, and right after you get to the second page (where it gives you the option to Install or Recover (recover does the same as above)) it says Loading Setup, and once again hangs. I've left it there for about 30 minutes...

Anyone with ideas? I have plenty of things on the HDD I' would like to salvage, but it's a laptop hdd, so it's not as easy to salvage... I've considered putting the HDD in another comp and just seeing if it'd boot at all, but looking for ideas first.

I've also disabled all the hardware I could in the BIO's thinking that may have been one of the problems... but no luck yet.

A:Setup Won't Load (Can't recover either)

1. 7zip is benign, it should not have given you that trouble. I installed 7zip on several systems (XP, Vista, Win7) and never had to reboot.

2. To recover your data, try this: Computer First Aid Using Knoppix

3. Adding all your events up, it sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem. But what part of the H/W is the million dollar question.

I have built my own PC nearly a year ago now i had some initial hassles at first but then It went ok and since it has worked consistantly with no big problems
However the other night I pressed the wrong button when I wanted to shut the computer down so instead of waiting for it to reload etc I turned the psu switch off instead

After leaving it for about 1 minute I switched it back on and since then Windows will not load up

After going through the POST checks I get the single beep (everything ok) then this is when normally Windows XP screen should come up but it didn't
I checked the BIOS and found that the Boot Order was reset so I changed the order back to Load from Hard drive as the Primary booter but this didn't make any difference
I then decided to re install the Windows to see if that would work

I changed the load priority again to CD/DVD and started the procedures to installing windows but after the message "Press any key to boot from CD..." nothing happened
So no matter what I do the damn screen won't change from the Blank screen!!

Can anyone HELP???

The moniter is still on but I get no sound either from speakers (I have the USB speakers so normally when I turn comp on the speakers makes noises whilst going through the POST checks) either

A:Windows XP / Setup CD won't load

sounds to me like you have a HDD problem on your hands if it not making it past there check in the BIOS if it even sees the your HDD if it does then you either have a dead drive or your boot files are frag'd

if it doesn't trying unplugging all the HDD cables and reseating them back down

but your best bet is to just go to the BIOS load the fail safes and try and reboot it about 70% of the time that fixes whatever happened with loading problems
