Hi everybody,
Like I say in the topic I can?t format my SSD#1 Crucial MX100 512GB.
Here what I try. Thanks.

Operating System: Windows 10 full updated (October 2016)
Computer: Asus Maximus Formula (buy at 2008)
BIOS: Legacy BIOS (mean no UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)

BIOS and Windows 10 recognized the SDD#1.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- I try Disk Management to format the SDD#1.
One with ?Quick format? option check and one with ?Quick format? uncheck.

Same result for both:
The windows message received:
?Virtual Disk Manager? (title of the windows showing the message)
The format did not complete successfully (the message)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2- For this step I just connect the SDD#1 and the CDROM
I try to boot from Windows 10 DVD installation, choose ?Install? and Windows is not able to delete the partition on the SDD#1. It is not able to create a partition neither. And sure it?s not able to install Windows 10 on the SDD#1.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3- For this step I just connect the SDD#1 and the CDROM
I try to boot from Windows 10 DVD installation, choose ?Repair?, go in command prompt and do the following:

Diskpart
List disk
List volume

Select disk 0
Select volume 1
Clean

Any one know the brand and model of the 512GB Ssd used in M900? I wonder whether it is SLC/MLC/TLC.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

A:About 512Gb ssd for M900

Surely not SLC.

Per system service parts document you can get:

- Samsung (PM871) is TLC
- SanDisk i suppose MLC
- LiteOn i suppose MLC

Majority of systems that we get from Lenovo is with Samsung PM871.

**

Or you can use partslookup. Best is to have serial number. Also possible to have product number, but then not 100% reliable regarding SSD P/N (as substitutes may be used).

I just received a new XPS 15 and I was wondering about the unpartitioned drives.  It seems there is no recovery drive as the support app told me to create on. So what are the unused partitions of:
500 MB EFI System Partition
826 MB Recovery Partition
450 MB Recovery Partition
12.98 GB Recovery Partition (** Seems like a lot **)
1.05 GB Recovery PartitionWhat are all of these for?   Thanks, Mark

A:XPS 15 - 512GB SSD Volumes

The EFI System Partition is what all systems that boot in UEFI mode boot from.  UEFI can't natively read NTFS, so the EFI partition is formatted as FAT32 and contains the bootloader, which turns around and loads Windows from your OS partition.
If you use a tool like Diskpart rather than Disk Management, you'll also see a very small MSR partition, probably 16-128MB.  That's also required for systems that boot in UEFI mode.
The 13GB Recovery partition probably contains an image of your system as it shipped from the factory in case you ever want to recover to that state.  I'm not sure why the Support app isn't seeing that.
The fact that you have 3 other Recovery partitions is strange to me.  They're all sized to indicate that they're used for the Windows Recovery Environment, which is a small partition containing tools to help diagnose and repair an unbootable system.  A clean install creates 1, and sometimes updating to a new release of Windows 10 causes your system to create another one immediately after your C drive (by shrinking your C drive and using the freed up space) if the existing partition is too small for the new release's requirements AND it can't be resized in place.  At that point, the original Recovery partition sits there as dead weight since it's no longer used.  But once that second partition right after your C drive has been created, future releases should simply keep shrinking your C ... I mean the more GB on a SSD te slower it is?

I have an HP Envy 15-AQ118CA.  As far as I can tell, the 256GB SSD contained within is a NMVe PCIe M.2 256gb variety.  I have two question. 1) Can I replace 256gb with a 512gb type 2280 (80mm) variety? 2) Is there a slot available to insert a regular 512GB (or some other size) SSD?  Or to put it more simply, I would like to increase the storage from 256gb to at least 512gb if not more. Is there any way of doing so? I have looked for info but the best I seem to come out with from the HP site is a spec sheet. The Service and Maintenance guide that was linked to this model is actually for "model numbers m6-aq1XX and m6-aq0XX", and doesn't mention SSD's in any case.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting.
Apologies that your computer is not working as expected.
It would appear from the resources I have that this is a normal occurrence and is not a fault.  With smaller computer designs and smaller components, a lot of heat is generated and needs to be dissipated to keep things cool.

HI,

My system is built around the Asus Z97 pro (wi-fi) motherboard, currently running windows 8.1 on a Plextor 256gb M6 ssd on a pcie bracket... the speeds are expected for this SSD.... it is seen in bios no probs.

For christmas I was given these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J9V521S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MOXDGYI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I have taken the plextor m6 out of the pcie slot and replaced it with the xp941 512gb SSD placed in the top slot of the Bplus pcie bracket.

When entering bios the new ssd is not seen, thus I cannot do a fresh install of windows 8.1 onto the m.2 ssd in the pcie bracket.

I have updated my z97 pro bios to the latest listed on the asus support website to no avail.... bios will still not see the new ssd. I want the ssd mounted in the pcie bracket and not the m.2 slot on the board as I need all the sata ports.

Please help. Many thanks.

Hi Marty,Specs: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04746338I'm not able to source any Manual for this model series unfortunately from HP sites. From HP part surfer website, you notebook came with 512GB M.2 2280 SATA-3 TLC SSD. SSD is solid state drive, with no spinning disk - it's flash chip. No heat, no noise, absolute & consistent hyper in performance. You can definitely go from 512GB to 1TB. Hope you're aware that it'll be a costly affair. This would be good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/ssd-850-evo-m2-1tb-mz-n5e1t0bw...Before upgrade, be sure to create Recovery USB now so that you can use that to factory reset OS after upgrade. You can clone drive to new SSD also, using migration tool available from Samsung.RegardsVisruth

I've been keeping an eye on the Thinkpad P70 for a while and I'm ready to buy with the 4K display. I would like to have the fastest ad most robust storage option for the primmary drive. I see that I can configure the P70 with a 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe straight from Lenovo but this will now incur a 3-4 week additional delay. Or I can buy the laptop from lenovo and buy a Samsung 950 PRO 512GB PCIe NVMe M2 seperately from Amazon for slightly less and Amazon has it ready to ship right away. Are both of these drive options the same? This is what I'm considering buying from Amazon for use with the P70 and I wonder if the PCIe drive option that Lenovo offers is the same "Pro" version below. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-950-PRO-Internal-MZ-V5P512BW/dp/B01639694M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461... Thanks for any clarification.

A:P70 Storage: Configure with 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe or...

More or less yes. The 950 Pro is the consumer version of the SM951 that Lenovo uses. You can look up both on Samsung's site to see the differences. However, if you want the "fastest and most robust storage option" you'll want the RAID 0 m2 512 option. That nearly maxes out the theoretical read and write specs for 4 lane NVMe 3.0 connectors at about 3.8GB/s for both in real life tests. Otherwise, you are looking at 2.5GB/s read, 1.5 GB/s write as a single m2. You can't activate RAID unless the system is ordered that way (different motherboards.) (FYI: the 256 drives do not have these same numbers; they are 2.2 GB/s read and 1.8 GB/s write)

I have just finished installing windows 10 in a new pc while using old HDD drives I had from my older pc. I have purchased Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2 NVMe to be my boot drive and purchased the samsung 850 ssd for regular storage.

In addition to the above I already had 2 older HDDs from my previous pc that I connected them for extra storage.
When I started the windows 10 installation I chose custom so that I could choose the NVME ssd for installation and boot, however, I noticed that I couldn't differentiate between the two samsung ssds as both were 512 gb and windows only called each 'drive 1 or drive 2' and so on.

So, I randomly chose one and I think it appears to be the 850 that was installed, to my dismay.
Now the issue is that I cannot locate the NVME drive on 'this pc' although it is seen in BIOS for boot drive. To confuse me even more, in the BIOS I cannot see the M_1 slot when I go to advenced then storage in BIOS, the other 3 drives are located by their different satas.
I don't know what to do.
to summarise I would appreciate it if someone can help me in getting:
1 - the samsung 950 to be my installed windows, currently it says its the boot drive but i dont know if it needs to have windows installed on it
2 - to have the NVME recognised by windows so I can use it for storage an... Read more
