explorer.exe crashes and restarts continously.

Q: explorer.exe crashes and restarts continously.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I shut down explorer.exe and then i ran HijackThis. don't know if that affected the log. Anyways here it is.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 1:49:48 PM, on 6/30/2010Platform: Windows 7 (WinNT 6.00.3504)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.7600.16385)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\system32\taskhost.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exeC:\Program Files\IDT\WDM\sttray.exeC:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\hpwuSchd2.exeC:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\HpqSRmon.exeC:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Wireless Assistant\HPWAMain.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP QuickTouch\HPKBDAPP.exeC:\Program Files\HP\QuickPlay\QPService.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Zune\ZuneLauncher.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPHelper.exeC:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Update\DivXUpdate.exeC:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 10\Nero BackItUp\NBAgent.exeC:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avgnt.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exeC:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Shared\HpqToaster.exeC:\Windows\ehome\ehmsas.exeC:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeC:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeC:\Windows\explorer.exeC:\Users\Marco\Downloads\HijackThis.exeR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...ion&pf=cnnbR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0" target="_blank" class="wLink">http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...ion&pf=cnnbR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...ion&pf=cnnbR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...ion&pf=cnnbR0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.localR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhostO2 - BHO: &Yahoo! Preferred Solution: explorer.exe crashes and restarts continously.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

Xp reboots/reboots

Try tapping the f8 key as it starts up ,you should be able to start in safe mode then choose last known configuration by using the keyboard arrow keys and the enter key

alternatively this may help

Have you ever had to troubleshoot a Windows XP system that appeared to be stuck in a continuous reboot loop? In this scenario, you can start the system as you normally would and even log on. But within seconds of logging on, the system mysteriously reboots itself. In some cases, you do not even have to log on before the system reboots.

If this sounds familiar, you could be encountering a feature of Windows XP's Startup and Recovery system. By default, this system specifically configures Windows XP to automatically restart itself after encountering a system failure error.

These system failure errors are usually isolated and occur randomly. As such, the best way for the operating system to deal with them is to automatically restart.
In most cases, doing so solves the problem

But if the system failure error is more serious and occurs on a regular basis, you will encounter a continuous reboot loop.

However, you can disable the automatic restart behavior. Follow these steps:

1.Press Windows>>Break to open the System Properties dialog box.

2.On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section.

3.In the System Failure section, deselect the Automatically Restart check box, and click OK.

Hey everyone,

So I turned on my Asus F3T laptop which runs Windows Vista today. It began to boot, showed the Asus logo with black background, and then restarted itself. It has been doing this over and over all day. Hitting F8 will not bring me to a menu where I can choose to start in safe mode. I don't think it boots far enough to let me do that. I have been able to pull up some menus with F2 and F9 but I have been tentative to fiddle with the settings too much. I have a strong feeling this was caused a windows update. It was either yesterday or the day before.. about 15 updates installed and seemed to have difficultly being installed. I have no idea what to do and don't want to lose data on my hard drive. My computer did not come with an installation disc, just a recovery disc that would clear out my hard drive if I used it. Please help!

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Acer Aspire V3-772G. Windows explorer crashes randomly, and restarts instantly. Various solutions on the internet are for problems where explorer crashes due to a specific task such as accessing some programs. In my case, it is just random and occurs once in a while. Help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. Finally I decided to just go to the video on my computer and show it to someone, I went into the picture folder, and then Explorer closed and restarted. It happens all the time, where I can't even get to open a file. I ran the SFC and got a SFC detail sheet. I think some file is corrupted. Can someone help me? I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Hello 7799121935.

Unfortunately the crash dumps are not showing adequate information about the crashes; but what is noticed that three haed-to-head crashes showing three different bugcheck codes. Most of all, the files like EventApp.txt, EventSys.txt and SystemInfo.txt are totally blank, whereas they can give us some more information about the situation.

A:Explorer Restart Continously

Hi everybody,
I was in a hurry so, while waiting for help, I tried by myself and now my pc is working fine.

I used HijackThis to find and remove bad registry entries, and Spybot utilities for BHO and running processes, looking for dll involved and deleting them.

Of course this had to be repeated some times, because some entries and some dll recreated under new
names, and some files were locked. I used the win console to delete them.

At the end I scanned everything with avast, ad-aware and spybot.

I think I had some good luck, anyway, I am grateful to this site for all helpful information I found here.

Hello,

after ZeroAccess virus successfully has been removed with TDSSKiller, Combofix and MBAM, a performance problem still persist
Explorer continously runs at 40-50% CPU.
According to procexpl, this is caused by ntdll.ll, one of the explorer threads. If I suspend this thread, CPU usage is normal (20-30% total). I I kill the thread, explorer terminates after a few minutes.
How to further diagnose the cause of this and remedy (I have downloaded Windows SDK, but lack the skills to use).

Secondary issue is that register contains 163 controlsets (while 2 is normal). It is unclear why these have been created. How to remove these ?

Hey guys,

I've recently encountered a problem which i've never experienced, nor heard of.

Whenever I start up my laptop(Windows Vista Home Premium SP1), it starts popping up 'Windows Explorer has stopped working', after about a little over 3-4seconds, it closes, and another pop up follows: 'Windows Explorer is restarting..', then not responding, and it continues in a loop, repeated motion. A Vista help center comes up, and tells me that this error is caused by a program by the name of 'PowerCinema by Phoenix Technologies'. With this, i'm unable to even start up my Start Menu - thus, unable to start up Command Prompt, to try out some commands which might fix the problems - which was recommended by the Vista Help Center - Built into Vista OS's.

Anyone got any solutions? I'm currently unable to use that computer, as it doesn't allow me to run even Command Prompt, with that continuous popping up. It seems like some kind of virus, but i'm not too sure. I've reformatted it to 2 days before, when my computer was still running perfectly fine(on the surface at least), to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

Hello - having trouble with my system:

HP Pavilion a1230n / Windows XP SP2
Anthlon 64 3700+
Geforce 7600 GS
1.5 Gigs PC3200 RAM

Problem: sometimes the pc simply crash-restarts, no error messages or warnings. Most often happens when playing an on-line computer game, "Eve Online." The screen goes black and the pc re-boots.

A PC Doctor diagnostic test shows my cpu (Athlon 64) failing three tests:

AMD FPU Test
AMD MMX Test
AMD SSE Test

Error Message for above tests (comes up during PC Doctor test): "Virtual Device Driver format in regsistry is invalid." This error message is a windows pop-up box, NOT a PC Doctor result message.

HP Tech Support online chat says the cpu is screwed and needs to be replaced. Anyone have any other opnions? Thx!

A:PC crashes & restarts

See if you get a error message by turning the Automatic Restart OFF.
How to turn off Automatically Restart

Click Start then right click My Computer choose Properties
Then Advanced tab
Under Startup & Recovery click Settings
Under System failure uncheck Automatically Restart
Click OK.

Now the Error message should stay up so you can read it.

Over heating or Video Card or both is a likely cause.

Morning/Afternoon All.

I have a system that runs on windows 7 home premium 64bit SP1, its primarily a storage server but also handles time consuming tasks (and some folding while it idles :D ) .

However for a month or two is has been restarting randomly every day or two. (not a clean shut-down from what i can tell).
I log in to check on it or do something and i'm back at the logon screen instead of the lock screen I usually leave it on.

A Look into the event viewer shows the error as the vague "kernal power - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

This error has been getting on my nerves and I thought I better start heavily looking into it this weekend before it creates worse problems like file-system corruption.

Here is the speccy file requested from the sticky on the sub-forum :D .
YGGDRASIL.speccy

Thanks Again for any help you awesome people can give,
Will be happy to give any more info/ logs to narrow down this problem.

Sorry for the double post but I noticed something odd.

I just noticed speccy was reporting my SSD at 128C and I double cheaked this with Speedfan. (i'll attemp to walk down there soon and cheak by feel, I view it remotely normally).

do ssd's get naturally hotter (i assume not this much) all other drives are listed around the 33-38C mark and its right in there with them (in the group directly behi... Read more

Hi.

My windows explorer crashes and restarts every time I perform some action (e.g., opening a file, moving a file, saving a file). I get the standard "windows explorer encountered a problem and needs to shut down; sorry for the inconvenience" message. In addition, trying to attach a file (mostly word documents) crashes the web browser - IE and firefox simply close, chrome gives an error message "plug-in crash - shockwave flash" and becomes unresponsive.

I very much appreciate your help.

I have already begun a System Scan using sfc /scannow in Command Prompt...which just finished upon writing this up an Windows didn't find any "integrity violations"

I have NOT installed the latest Windows Updates only because I haven't gotten around to doing it. I have also read on other forums that Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be the culprit but I wanted to come here to verify that with you guys before I start messing with Windows essential applications.

What I will do in the meantime while waiting for an answer here is run a chkdsk and a virus scan(AVG).

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Rebooted my computer and Explorer.exe now runs fine. The problem I'm going to run with is intermittent but... Read more

A:Explorer.exe Crashes, attempts restart, crashes again. Details Inside

Are you running both AVG and MSE? If so, remove one or the other. Having two security programs that accomplish essentially the same tasks can cause conflicts due to them accessing the same system files or system resources simultaneously. It is possible this is the behavior that is causing your explorer.exe issue.

MS Outlook 07 send/receive works with all except googlemail. When that tries to send/receive, outlook crashes and a DOS window very quickly appears then the computer restarts.

I was going to clean the registry, so I wanted to backup, but had to erase disc first. When I tried backing up, the above happened again.

Now, I have no backup and I am worried that I will lose everything. The computer has been extremely slow for many weeks too.

I really need you help........please!

A:MS Outlook 07 crashes - restarts

Since I have no backup of my contacts, I thought I would try to delete the all email. The 2 that are stuck in my outbox will not delete. If I try to open them, I get:

Microsoft Office Outlook: Cannot open this item. Outlook has already begun transmitting this message.

Help!
