Trouble downloading things

Q: Trouble downloading things

Okay, i am not sure what causes this, not even really sure what forum it belongs in, but here is my problem.

When downloading things, whether in IE or Mozilla Firefox, the download seems to think its done about halfway into it, if not less. Anything I download does this, it starts, and finishes...and me, thinking its done, open it. It of course doesnt work and i look at the file size and its way smaller than what its intended to be.

My question is, what causes this, and if you know that...how do i fix it?

Preferred Solution: Trouble downloading things

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everybody.
My name is Santiago and this is my first post

Im a Computer and Repair Tech, but this thing has been bugging me for quite a lot of hours.

Here's the deal.

I did a format and installed XP again. (the why of my format will be another thread problem )
I installed everything, up to SP3 and all the main updates.
Adobe flash, etc etc.

The problem is that, when i go to a video website, such as youtube, i have to wait until the WHOLE video has finished loading, to be able to play it. Its not that it loads a bit, and play, and then stops until it loads more.
But thats not the big issue with this problem.
The worst part is that, when downloading from hosting sites, (a direct download), the little window with "open/save" DOESNT show up!!! Neither in IE8 or in Firefox., but...when i check my ISP recieved bytes, it seems it is downloading it, but i have no sign whatsoever. Therefore, i cant chose whether to open or save, or see the progress.
But the funny thing is that...when i close my internet connection, they do show up. But i cant resume the downloads.
And no, my PC has no virus and that stuff, so dont ask

This issue got solved, out of the blue. And i dont know how.
It was there for some days and today is all working fine.

My sister has a roommate who is making life kind of difficult - he's downloading stuff and installing it without permission, despite being asked not to. They're on one desktop and she wants to know if there's a way to make it so you can only download things if you've got the password on one desktop, or if she has to make separate desktops (because I told her I'm pretty sure you can download but can't install on XP desktops that are limited accounts - that's true, isn't it?). She's using the latest version of IE, and she uses a laptop (not sure if XP is different on laptops or not - during the short time I had a chance to try it out it seemed the same, but I wasn't particularly looking.)

A:preventing users from downloading things

Limited users aren't supposed to be able to download, but there are ways around it unfortunately. The first thing you should do is make sure any Administrative level accounts have passwords that only she knows, and that includes the System Administrator account which may be hidden on her machine but reachable by booting into Safe Mode (tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up).

These also might help:

Enable or Disable Downloads Per User in IE (Line 254) Right hand side
You can also block CD/DVD and floppy installs: See line 264 (right hand

Recently I've been getting BSOD's quite often. I wouldn't bother anyone with it if I was able to read the problem. Before I'm able to read the error message, the computer just reboots.
I'm running XP SP3 on a custom computer.
Specs for computer:
Intel Quad Core 3.0 GHz CPU
Not sure what the GPU is, but it's ASUS "Black Pearl" which is just an improved version of a different Gforce one.
And 640GB HDD.

I'm really at a loss here as to what's going on.

Hi there,

About a week ago I foolishly let my son onto my pc and he downloaded bits and bobs including a couple of viruses which AVG picked up. Since then IE pages are taking ages to open, often I need to refresh. Some aren't opening at all ie. Facebook and Windows Live Messenger isn't working unless I go to troubleshoot and then click on "repair", then sometimes I manage to get in. When I send a hotmail email the page freezes after I click send so I'm never sure if it's sent or not. If I try to get into a Pogo game the IE pages just vanish.

So, I've done what I guess are the usual things, deleted temp internet files, system restored to a few weeks ago and I've run an online virus scan from ESET which found one virus and deleted it. Nothing is helping. I've just done a Hijack This scan as I think that it might help. Could you let me know if you need more info. I'm very grateful and feel bad asking for help as I can't think of anything that I can do to help in return!

Thanks for looking. - Sally

I came home from work turned on the computer and the resolution is all screwed up. I've tried to adjust the display settings but there is no selection..it only shows the screen resolution as 640x480 and you can't move that, and the color qty is 4bit - I didn't even know there was such a thing.

I've done the trouble shooting, I've tried to go back to the settings from 4 days ago and it couldn't do it. Right now as I type the screen pops up gray coloring while I type.

The monitor wasn't dropped, no magnets and it's only a year old! Dell puter.
I can still use it but either can't read some things and some programs won't work cuz of the required color qty.

I can't think of anything else--PLEASE HELP!

I recently aquired an Emachines T5082 desktop PC from a family member. The (used) machine was running horrifically slow on Vista, so we cleaned it out and replaced it with XP.

I tried installing some basic stuff; Housecall, Firefox and Steam. I tried loading up CS:S, but Steam flashed a message saying that the PC didn't have enough hard disk space! I've only been on the internet to download the aformentioned applications, and a desktop PC like this should be at least be decent enough to run some Counter-Strike, considering how some other people seem to run The Orange Box on it.

I tried freeing disk space, but XP displayed a message saying that I would have to insert the disk, or I'd alter important files.
I know it's a horrible sytem, but it's the only desktop I own at the moment, and I'd like to clean it up. I've seen other tech support forums have threads where other user's T5082 PCs are reportedly fixed after installing 2GB ram and XP.

The only problem is, mine has been altered by the previous user; it has:

140 GB (127 Free out of 140)
8.50 GB (another drive)
Windows XP service Pack 1
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHZ
1.87 GB of RAM

The error message displayed was:
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-Rom Now.

Anyone have any Idea what's going on?

A:Emachines T5082 Trouble with XP (among other things...)

Have you installed the OS on the 8.5 GB hard drive? there is plenty of hard disk space on the 140GB drive. try running the CS installer again and see if it will allow you to choose the destination for install (perhaps a custom install option?)

The error message is strange, I have seen this before on PC's brought to me and they are usually the result of Modded or pirated versions of XP being installed.

I know it seems a pain but try re-starting, making sure that you are installing on the larger of the two HDD and that you are performing a Full format with the windows installer

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure where this should go since I have no clue where my issue actually is :/
So, I bought this PC in August off of Ebay. It may be the last time I do such a thing. I've been troubleshooting for weeks, and I'm about ready to smash this thing.
Anyway, it worked fine up until about mid November when I started getting BSOD while playing World of Warcraft. I was extremely busy that month, and it didn't happen any other time, so I just stopped playing until I had time to figure out what was going on.
At the end of December, it got to the point where it was BSOD every time I opened a program. Symptoms changed over and over. One day Seatools for DOS and Chkdsk tests were failing. The next, those tests were passing with no issues found, and it looked like the boot sector was corrupt. I found a solution somewhere on here to fix that through cmd, which worked for about a day. Then sfc /scannow caused the HD to start beeping at me. Seatools found no problems, and neither did Chkdsk after replacing the SATA cables going to my HD. Then I started getting a weird Avast error. When I tried to uninstall, the program was showing in my programs folder, but nothing was inside...like the files had just been deleted without a proper install.
At this point, I think I have a rootkit or something equally nasty since all AV scans were coming clean. The only problem is that the standalone antiviruses (I tried Bitdefende... Read more

My brother's computer (WinXP, SP2) has gotten fairly messed up recently. We're not sure how it started, but here are the symptoms:

- When using Google, will get a list of sites, but when you click on one, a new tab opens in Firefox with a random site being displayed (former tab remains unchanged)
- Click Start, no user name or icon is displayed
- Go to User Accounts through Control Panel, get "Unspecified error", click OK, blank page is displayed. Click Home or either arrow from that blank screen, get error message "'g_Navigator' is null or not an object"
- Go to Manage Computer, Local Users and Groups will not expand, and its icon has an X over it (when clicked, it gives the message "Unable to access the computer [computer name]. The error was: The RPC server is unavailable.")

Also, when the computer starts up and hits the Welcome screen, a box pops up with an error message saying that LSASS.EXE failed with status code 1073741819 and then it begins a 60-second countdown before it reboots. I can only get around this by waiting for the welcome screen to disappear, bringing up the Task Manager, and running "shutdown -a".

I'm not sure if those are all of the symptoms I've seen, but I think it's enough. I've found fixes for pretty much all of them individually, but nothing actually works. I've tried running anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, but they catch nothing, and they are unable to re... Read more

Just a week ago I got XP (prof) (I'm coming from 98SE). A friend installed it for me. Almost every day, while getting it built up and installing programs, I made a return-point.

Today I tried to install a program that needed windows-installer (I don't know if earlier installed programs all installed without that or not) and it wouldn't work (message: no entrance to Windows Installer Service) (some words may be unusual, sorry, I'm translating from my own language).

So I wanted to have a look at system-information (ms info) to see what was up. That didn't work either. Started but then stopped with at the right an empty screen. Message: 'No entrance to Windows Management Instrumentation-software. The files could be moved or deleted.'

When I tried to diagnose my networksettings I also got lots of 'WMI'-faults (I assume also Windows Management Instrumentation, the letters fit?). I know this friend installed a networkcard 'in advance' to a radiowave-internetconnection I will be getting in a month or so; but just now I only have modem/phone-connection (which works just fine btw). And this friend won't be around for a week to go at least, so I'm in the blue as to what exactly he might have done (might be quite okay though: just my suspicion that the trouble might come from something to do with networks...)

While looking around I also came across a message that said something like 'classes are not registered&#... Read more

I am having trouble downloading anything from any website whether it's through IE, Netscape or AT&T browser. When I go to any website to download, computer acts like it's downloading, but the end result is a large solid window, except for a small white square in the upper left hand corner of this large white window. Within that small white square there's a even smaller red square in it's left hand corner. Then below that is a blue triangle. Then to the right of those two small objects, there's a small black circle. I have searched and searched the internet for any explanations, but to no aval. Even AT&T couldn't explain it either when they tried to use their remote assistance to help me with downloading their software. I have taken a picture of this weird looking icon with my cell phone. If anyone out there would give me their cell phone # I'll send the picture to you. I have dug deep into IE's internet options, but don't see anything that should be blocking me from downloading. All options are checked that allows downloading. Please help!

I don't know whether this is an XP or an IE thing...

I inhereted this laptop at my company. I have full admin rights to it, btw.

This is kind of tough to explain. When I go to download certain types of programs - not files with a direct link to the file, but something that's supposed to run an installer on my machine - I don't get a prompt to download the software and the files don't start to download.

For example, go to http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00...&param=onlyGet

If you click I Agree, it should start to download a file. Except on my machine, it won't. I've had this same problem at other sites and it's becoming a major issue - I can't DL the webconferencing software we use, either.

I've gone into IE tools/Security/Custom Level and made sure that everything in ActiveX will download (or at least prompt me), but I don't get the pop-up box to download these types of programs. I've dropped my security levels to the bare minimums, but that didn't help either.

For what it's worth, the Sidestep site listed above gives me this error message:
This is taking too long.

Hi all.

I couldn't find any threads that cover my exact issue and I assume that this is the correct section of the board to post in... anyway, my issue is as follows:

IE8 won't allow me to download any programs. The download box pops up as normal and the progress bar goes to 100% but then it just closes and the download is nowhere to be seen. The search function won't find it either; the program is not on my computer.

The only bits of advice I've found online is to download Firefox (which would be great if it wasn't for the initial downloading problem) and also altering permissions in the Component Services bit (dcomcnfg), which did nothing.

I've also turned off Windows Firewall and am using Kaspersky 2011 with all permissions set so that it doesn't delete stuff automatically.

I also had an issue with uTorrent that I believe to be related: Whenever I clicked on a link to download a torrent, uTorrent wouldn't pick up on the fact that I was attempting to add a torrent to the download list. I was able to add a new torrent by inputting the URL but they would invariably fail.

(Foolishly, I had a bit of a tantrum and uninstalled uTorrent so as to install BitComet but then realised that I couldn't download that anyway. I blame quitting smoking.)

Any ideas?

something easier, I'll take that instead. I have RoadRunner Cable, I Obtain

You may be infected with Poweliks or Xswkit (aka Gootkit, a Poweliks clone) which typically affects the ability to browse or download files using Internet Explorer and causes PowerShell error alerts. Task Manager typically shows numerous occurrences of (COM Surrogate) dllhost.exe or dllhst3g.exe. If using a 64-bit version of Windows, then these entries will be listed as dllhost.exe *32 or dllhst3g.exe *32. These processes are known to spawn and consume a large amount of system resources. When attempting to download files in Internet Explorer you may receive the message "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." or you may see a pop-up alert advising that "powershell (powershell.exe) has stopped working".If you are having trouble downloading files with Internet Explorer, follow these instructions to re-enable downloads/reset all Security zones to default.

downloading its not there, the download screen just disapears
upon completion even though box isnt checked,

so i tried just to run it and it gets to point where window pops up
to install and click instal and window vanishes and nothing happens

ive check temp folders and cleared them ive tried system restore
set all internet options to default closed all virus programs,
no firewall up and still nothing
and it does this on everything thats downloaded or rather attempted

its funny because there is no errors that come up it just acts as though
nothing happened , created a folder for downloads and assigned everything to download to it and following downloads nothings there..

im wondering if the windows defender is a culprit here but i deleted it and still nothing, but maybe still remnants in registry or something

i hope that made sense and if any1 has any ideas please help

i ran online panda scan and nothing shows , aside from that i checked
logs and comp seems to be clean

Try using 'Download Accelerator Plus' Its free to try. You obviously have a problem in windows but please try DAP 1st just to check if that can download anything. This should eliminate any doubt that your internet connection may be causing the problem. Then we can take it from there

While I was downloading Windows 8.1, I accidentally shut my laptop off (which it clearly states not to do during the download) and now I cant download 8.1

It used to give me an error code but now it just says "cannot download windows 8.1" or "your windows 8.1 download could not be completed" in the windows store.

I'm not a techy so English words would be much appreciated.

pls halp.

I'm having trouble downloading files as in
"The page cannot be displayed"

but I don't think it's the site, as I tried others.

Last thing I did was install MS AntiSpyware, but basically turned off a lot of the auto-updates in that program.

Is it that or something to check in IE settings?

A:Trouble Downloading / MS Antispyware

Turn On Auto-updates in MS-antispyware and reset websettings in Tools>Internet options>programs> click "Reset Web Settings" and press '"Yes" then restore IE settings....Tools>internet options>Advanced> click on "restore defaults" then click "Apply" and 'ok'. if still not downloading uninstall MS-antispyware and then download any thing if it does then reinstall MS-antispyware and dont disable Auto-updates again.

I seem to have lost the ability to download any files from links on the internet or email attachments. I'm specifically trying to work with an attachment (PDF file).

I click the link and it automatically tries to open it in a browser window. It does not give me the option of saving it. I'm not able to right-click and get it to save either. The browser page opens and I get an error message that says the file cannot be saved because the source file cannot be read.

I get the same message when trying to download files from the internet as well.

What do you think????

Here is my original problem in a nutshell. I am a beginner. I installed an old windows xp i had (2002). After installation i couldn't connect to the internet. I checked the drivers, and sure enough, they had a ? next to their name. I needed these drivers: ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, video controller. I have only 1 computer, so i thought i should try the ubuntu (linux) cd i had. I installed ubuntu, and now i have internet. I went to dell.com/support and tried downloading drivers. I get this "delldriverdownloadmanager.application", a plain text document, 9.3 kb in size (not the 3.3 mb size i expect). I don't think this is the correct driver application. I cannot open it in winzip. I don't know what i am doing wrong. Can i download these drivers using a linux OS? Any help would be appreciated.

A:Trouble downloading drivers

It looks like Dell is trying to make you use a download manager to download the drivers (why they do this I do not know), try looking for a direct download link, if you can't find one, you can try using a friend's computer to download the ethernet drivers.

In response to your Report:

If you have solved your issue you can post back the solution and mark the thread as solved using the Mark Solved button above your thread; this lets other people know the solution and lets the helpers know that you no longer need assistance.

Also be be advise that the Malware Removal section is very busy due to the high number of infections and it can take 24 hours or more to get a response and if your thread has been lost you can also bump it up by posting to it again. Patience is required as their is only a limited number of quality helpers giving their time for free. Also if you still need help with TIS 2010 or having your HJT log read and checked for infections you can post it.
