Totally confused by iCloud

Q: Totally confused by iCloud

OK, I installed iCloud on my PC. I created a document in Pages on my iPad. When I go to the iCloud manager on my PC, the document is listed as being there, but I can't open it. So what good is it to me that it's there? Is there some way to open it that I'm not getting?

OK, I install iWorks. Now I can upload the document to iWorks, and open it and read it on my PC. But I can't edit it. So OK, I can download it in Word and edit it. But now I don't know how to save those edits to the original document in iWorks, so I can have them on my iPad.

What am I missing? What am I doing wrong?

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

Before I go on whining, here are the specs of my laptop :
Vista Home Premium
Processor : Intel pentium Dual Cpu T2310 @ 1.46GHz 1.47GHz
Memory : 2038 MB
Hard Drive : 120 GB
System : 32-bit
Most recent updates : KB 946609 (optional ), KB 915597 ( auto )
My Confusions :
1.) A week ago Brink said SP1 was not available through Windows Update( WU ), while at the same time .Joe indicated it was available in website and WU. ( I read those threads .)
2.) Someone said something about driver not upgraded and therefore it was not offered in the WU for those users. Does that mean I'm one of those?
3.) .Joe said that there are 2 prequisites for installing SP1 (it's from the same thread I mentioned .)
a) First prerequsite includes updates to the servicing stack, which I never saw it in WU.
b) 2nd includes updates required to reliably install or uninstall the service pack, which I never saw in WU either.
4.) We all saw the " horror stories " posted in this forum regarding problems during installing and after installing SP1. It got me worried.
5.) I still do not see SP1 offered in WU, optional or otherwise.
Will someone please clear my head ?

A:SP1. I'm totally confused.

Hi David,

I'm using Vista. Windows Mail is my default for email. I'm trying to send a photo via email. Photos are on Windows Photo Gallery. I follow the steps to send the photo but when I hit "send" it just goes back to Photo Gallery. Started researching and found that the photo is in the "send" in Microsoft Office Outlook which I've never used. I decided to try hitting "send" in this program only to find that the "send" button wasn't there - I had to set up the account. It still doesn't go. Error says the settings are wrong but they are the same as Windows Mail.

1. If I'm using Vista and their Windows Mail and their Windows Photo Gallery, why are the photos going to Microsoft Office Outlook and not Windows Mail.

2. Should I uninstall the program Microsoft Office Outlook. Would that solve my problem.

Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

A:Totally Confused

Go to Start Default programs and then "Set your default programs". In the Left Pane select Windows Mail, then select Set this program as default.

I have a problem that's probably tied to another problem. I opened an e-mail that I shouldn't have and got infected with something. I ran scans from Norton 360 and SuperAntiSpyware and other online scanning sites but I could not locate the malware. I paid a Symantec consultant to remove the infection from my system and he says it is clean. In the meantime, because my computer would randomly shut down and I was afraid that it would not recover, I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed all my programs. My computer does not recognize my video card and I have put in countless drivers to repair it with no success. Although my computer is more responsive and stable I am still plagued with random shutdowns from time to time. It sounds like you would hit the enter key and it would stick and continually click until I get a blue screen. This is the error code from Windows : Stop 0x00000012 (0x00000002,0x8001003B,0x00000000,0x00000000)

My system info is as follows
Dell Dimension E510
2.67 Ghz Intel pentium D
1 Gb memory
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
160 Gb Hard Drive

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm desperately trying to get a program to run for a surprise. The system requirements say I should have at least 128 ram. The computer says I have 130,524 Ram now. Another tech person said they don't know why it came through that way but it should be about the same. Anyway, it's not working and I was told to get more Ram so I started shopping around. Well, I called CompUsa in my area and they told me that I would have to buy 2 because this is something that comes in pairs. (saying I would have to buy 2 128's) Well I called Best Buy to get a price from them and they say that they are sold individually and I just need to buy 1. Who did I think of when I needed to know the "real truth"? My best support team out there, Tech Guys. So which is it, can I buy one or do I have to buy 2. The wierd thing is, the price for both was really close. CompUsa was charging me $60/each and Best Buy was charging $120.00 for one. Wierd!

i'm an old xp/outlook user, (thoroughly unfamiliar with Vista) who recently started using Windows Live Mail on the XP machine, and now have just installed a new, Windows 7 machine. I tried to access the Windows Live Mail account on the new Win7 machine and instead of getting the Windows Live Mail desktop layout, I've gotten Windows Live Hotmail, which ain't the same. Among things I was getting, and needed, from the WLM were ability to save email files to text files, which I had found on a menu bar, and access to a calendar, neither of which seem to show up on the WL Hotmail application.

I'd appreciate it if anyone can suggest how I can get Windows Live MAIL on the new machine and eliminate the Windows Live HOTMAIL application. It also would be great if somebody could point me (and probably many others) to a single source of information about the difference between all of these apparent versions, and how to keep them straight.

Many thanks.

I have been having a problem with my wife's pc. When I try to boot into widows xp it would restarted and give me the choice of how I wanted to reboot ie: Safe mode, last know good configuration, ect. I thought that I had the problem narrowed down to the motherboard or processor. I was planning on upgrading the pc soon any way so I bought a new motherboard, cpu, memory and video card. When I put everything in the pc I have the same problem. Right now I have the motherboard powersupply and harddrive sitting on my desk and am running chkdsk on the harddrive. It sound to me like I have a corrupted widows file but when I put the harddrive in my system it boots and runs fine.

The only real difference between the two systems that I have is mine is an AMD and my wife is Pentium. If any one has any ideas I would be grateful to hear them or if any one can explain why this harddrive seem to prefer amd's to pentium's? Any help would be great.

Thank You.

What is happening is that Windows is looking for the hardware that it was originally installed on. While the Hard drive maybe the same, the motherboard chipset and controllers are different and windows will not loadwhen it doesnt find what it is looking for. What you did when you installed a new motherboard and processor was create a completely different computer. Windows will need to reinstalled as new. Now if this was a major brand PC like an HP/Compaq, Sony, Emachines, Dell, or something similar that came with windows preinstalled or with an OEM Windows installation it will not install on your new system unless the Motherboard is pretty much Identicle to the original. And in that case you will have to purchase a new copy of windows to be legal and in keeping with the OEM EULA.

I am on build 10162 but would like a clean install, if that is what you recommend! Or will it be automatically updated to a full version?

Can you tell me the correct way to go about it in words I can understand!

I am trying to set up a home network to share files between a wireless Toshiba Satellite and an HP desktop. I have the desktop wired to a Belkin Wireless G Plus router. The Toshiba can see the router network name to connect to the internet. I have tried to set up wireless network on the desktop running Windows XP. Then it told me to run Network Setup wizard. I did and gave desktop a new name for a network. I can see the "clients" on the Belkin router setup page, but cannot see them on either computer. I have all kinds of books I borrowed on networking and I am just getting more confused.

I have a Printer connected to Windows server 2008 and shred among users. When I click show me "Print Both Sides" on the printer, in prints a paper and on the top of that paper it says that it is a HP LaserJet P3010 Series Printer. On the Server it is HP LaserJet3005. And on the front side of the Printer it is HP LaseerJet P3015dn. Why is that all things are complected? How should I identify what printer I have?

A:Totally get confused with HP Printers.

I do believe when it says its a 3010 Series printer that just means its one model in a rang of printers, (3010, 3011, 3012, etc). They likely all use the same driver and its probably the driver thats adding that message to the printed page. If it says HP LaseerJet P3015dn on the front of the printer its a HP LaseerJet P3015dn. Why the server lists it as a HP LaserJet3005 I don't know? Incorrect driver installed maybe?

I recently bought a HP Pavilion with a 640 gb HD and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I went from Win 98 to Win 7 so I am years behind in new hardware technology. I want to add an external hard drive to make backups but after reading about the different brands and types I am totally confused. Which is the most recommended brand and what size in gigs should I get? Should I use the Win 7 backup software or the software that comes with some of the brands ? Thanks for your help.

A:Totally Confused About Backup

Western Digital, Samsung, and Seagate are the predominant brands. You can have bad luck with any of them, but I would lean toward the first two.

I'd get a size at least as big as your 640. There won't be much price difference if you go larger.

Some people here use Windows backup successfully, but others find it lacks flexibility and isn't intuitive.

Distinguish between the 2 forms of backup: imaging and file by file. The general problem with imaging is that it doesn't always work---you think you have a valid backup, but then can't restore it for whatever reason.

You should definitely do file by file for your personal data.

Optionally, you can use imaging to make an image of your entire C partition. That image file would include any personal data you might have on C, but I would still make a separate file by file backup of personal data.

You can store it all on the external. I'd just make a single partition on the external and use a folder structure to organize your backups, whatever they may be.

The primary alternative to Windows for imaging are Acronis and Macrium Reflect Free Edition. You can also get a free copy of Acronis is you have a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive.

There are a number of file by file backup applications: Synctoy from Microsoft, Karen's Replicator, Cobian, Second Copy, etc. Most people use a free application of some type.

You might consider making 2 partitions on your boot drive if you haven't already done so: C for Windows and D for perso... Read more

Hello everyone.
I recently updated my rig, but only motherboard and CPU. The rest is the same, and I have never had that problem before. So here is the deal: My PC freezes after some time. Freeze is quite hard, everything stops responding, even the keyboard LED lights when I press Caps Lock. I can't even use restart button, just have to long press power button to turn it off. I tried: changing voltage, using XMP, using RAM at 1333hz and 1600hz. Nothing workd, it just freezes. But then, I tried to give a PC some stress. So, I started playing crysis 3 at max graphics. I played more than 2 hours and nothing happened. When I finished, I decided to check my facebook and youtube, and after watching a video, it froze after 2 mins. I can't say it for sure, but as I remember, every time PC froze, I was surfing the web.
What I'm going to do: I downloaded AIDA64 extreme edition, I plan to stress each component until I see what causes the problem. If I do not discover anything, I'll bring it to my local techsupport team, and ask them to remove and change every component, if that didn't work, then it's a motherboard problem.
Before that, I would like to try anything you can offer to fix this problem. I'm quite desperate, plus I'm low on budget.
So PLEASE, may be you had a similar problem and solved it? What should I do?
Any help would be appriciated.
Thank you in advance

Just established in a previous thread that I've got a hardware issue in my PC. Checked everything I can and pretty much narrowed it down to the mobo/processor.

So - I'm looking for a new one. Need to get it asap (preferably want to buy today) as the wife is breathing down my neck but totally overwhelmed & confused by motherboard/chip language!

Firstly - should I buy a whole new motherboard bundle or just a new processor? My fear is if I just buy a new processor and then find the motherboard has gone then I have to go through more hassle so might just be simpler to buy a bundle.

I currently have a Foxconn G41MX running an Intel Core 2 Quad.

I was hoping to stay with Intel, was looking at Asus/Gigabyte brands. My budget is preferably around the ?100 mark.

Generally it's used as my wife's work machine but I do use it for a bit of Photoshop design work when working from home and also gaming (MW2 & ACR) so needs to able to support those easily.

I'll be keeping my GPU (ATI Radeon 5770).

Can anyone suggest any suitable boards I could look at?

A:Best motherboard bundle to go for? Totally confused!

It would be better to know your location to be able to suggest where you might buy from, I have to say your budget is very restricting. 775 CPU's are getting difficult to find, you should take the opportunity to change.

Just as an example look at this, board,CPU and RAM from the UK but it's ?107 plus delivery and is an entry level kit.

In an initial effort to wean myself away from OE, which I've used for 15 years, I downloaded/installed Thunderbird. I thought I set up two accounts, like I have in OE: One for Business Mail, the other for Personal Mail. Problem is, only the Personal Mail account works. When you view account settings for it, it has all the setting options under it, like Server Settings, Copies & Folders, Composition & Addressing, etc. It also has all the usual folders -- Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash, Outbox.

But while the Business account imported all my messages from OE thru 10/16/11, it has not downloaded a single message since and when you click to view the account settings, it says, "The following is a special account. There are no identities associated with it." Because it wasn't working, I set up a duplicate account which DOES work. I then tried to delete the "special" account, but the "Remove account" option is dimmed, so I can't get rid of it.

What is a "special" account, why is it there (i.e., what does it do), and why can't I zap it?

Yesterday I had a system failure and was not able to boot into Windows. Previously I had created an image using the built-in imager in Windows on an external hard drive. I had also created an image using Macrium (thank goodness).

I used the Repair Disk I had created to boot up expecting to be able to use the Windows created image to restore my C-drive.

I have read all the tutorials on how to restore the image, all that did was confuse me. It seems there are just too many "IFs ands Buts" in the tutorials I have read.

The restore would NOT see the image I had created on the external HDD. I ended up restoring with Macrium which did a fine job.

What I would like is some simple instructions on how to restore an image created on an external HDD using the built-in imager.

If there is such instructions, I would appreciate I would appreciate directions to them.

Thank you

I'm guessing I must have installed some form of malware at some point, but I have absolutely zero clue as to how to get rid of it this message, or the components that have caused it. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hi All

I cant figure this out can sombody help?

I would like to make the Barge wifi but here is the way I would like to accomplish this?

I have an Netgear 18dbi Panel Antenna outside on the helm room connected to a Alfa b/g 500mw usb modem then 3 x 5 mtr active usb cables to a usb wall socket near a mains (240v) socket in the main room.

I can use the connection from the office BT wifi router in the marina to the Barge ( approx 50ft away ) without any problems so far this is working as I would like it to, although this dos not give me a wifi signal around the inside boat for my desktop etc.

I have also got 3g Dongle which I can connect directly to the laptop or desktop with no problems when out of the marina.

1. What I would like to be able to do is have the Alfas usb wall socket connect to some kind of wifi unit to send the signal around the Barge for my other Desktop & laptop?

2. & If possible in the same unit use the 3g dongle for when I leave the Marina and go down river which would still give me a signal around the Barge ?[

Is there anything available which would do them both together?

If not I would primarily want to do number 1

Any help would be much appreciated
Many Thanks

I'm not sure exactly what's wrong with my computer, but here's the story of how I came to be here this evening...Earlier today, I was surfing the web, reading Oh No They Didn't (an online celebrity gossip magazie, of sorts) when I get a random pop-up from Symantec. Usually when I get a Symantec pop up it's reminding me that my subscription is out of date (probably problem #1) this time however, it's a very strange message saying "Your email message to [email protected] has failed to send the message Subject: Get free viagra!" I don't exactly remember WHAT the message said or who it was going to or really even what the subject line was, but this was something I had never seen before. I hit "ok" to get the message to go away, and that's when the madness happened. hundreds of little symantec "0% of 1% message completed" boxes popped up. I would close one, and 5 more would open, and they just kept coming no matter what I did. So I hard booted out of the computer. When I rebooted the computer, all of the programs I open upon start up had a "Bad Image" error. I tried to research on the net what this meant, but every time I opened an internet browser, it would shut down after several minutes. And then, my desktop would clear itself of my task bar and my icons, then bring them back. Every 10 seconds it would refresh, clearing itself of my icons, closing anything I had open, and bringing the desktop back up. The computer would not start... Read more

Hello everyone.

Since thunder strike hit my house some 5 months ago (and killed my router and the LAN port on my motherboard), my 9 year old Athlon XP machine keeps freezing completely randomly. There are days when it freezes 2-3 times, but there are also days when it won't freeze at all. TOTALLY random freezing, no matter whether it's a blank desktop or dozen of open applications.

The first thing I tried was to simply reformat and install Windows XP SP3 again. No luck there, it kept freezing. Next, I've checked the RAM with MemTest86+ and defragmenting the drives. All OK. Next, I've tried cleaning all the components, so I disassembled the machine and cleaned everything. I also checked the motherboard for blown-up capacitors, everything looks fine. It still kept freezing.

So few days ago, I finally tried replacing the motherboard battery, and placed new thermal compound on CPU and graphics card. It didn't freeze for two days, but it started again this night... So, is the machine finally dead? I know it's old and everything, but can we extend its life a bit more?

A:PC keeps freezing totally, totally randomly...

NOTE: I have severe eye problems. If I do not respond to your postings, please PM another staff member for assistance.

Does it freeze in Safe Mode? If you haven't tried it, try running in Safe Mode with Networking for a while to see. To get into Safe Mode, rapidly tap the F8 key just before the Windows splash screen shows up.

Please note the time on the system clock (in the lower right corner of the screen the next time that it freezes (we'll need this to search for events around that time).

Then, please generate these reports (this was written for Vista, but XP is similar):

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

Event Viewer Log Files
Please provide us with copies of these 2 logfiles:
- Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes and press Enter
- Expand the Windows Logs category by clicking on the arrow/+ sign to it's left
- Right click on the Application log and select "Save all events as" and name it Application
- Then, right click on the System log and select "Save all events as" and name it System
- Zip up the log files an... Read more

OK, My Grandmothers house was hit by electricity a couple of weeks ago. It blew out her phones and her computer will not turn on. I have not tried turning the computer on myself this is just what I was told. The strange thing to me is the computer was plugged into a surge protected with the monitor and other things. The monitor still works the surge protector still works and everything else that was plugged into the surge protector still works. The only thing that does not work is the computer. Isn't that strange? The electricity would have blown out anything pluged into the surge protected and would have tried the surge protector? RIGHT? Now I don't know if the whole computer will no longer work. Does it sound like it could just be the power supply? How does a computer act after getting hit by electricity? This computer will not do anything! You push the power button and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? Is the computer fried? Is there anyway to fix it? Thanks for the help...

I wanted to get an opinion or a knowlege of what seetings the laptop needs to be, for iCloud to function properly? Maybe the settings on the other end as well, have to be adjusted to accept a PC system?
At this point, I am having screen resolution & color issues. Seems when I open the iCloud program, the screen switches & the colors & resolution go to a negative & cartoonish appearance.
Putting the feelers out there now.

Up til now, I have been happily syncing my iPhone4 and iPad2 with MS Outlook 2007 via my PC x iTunes.

Somehow, I recall choosing an option somewhere to use iCloud "cos it sounded OK" but now when I try to sync the devices on iTunes, it tells me that I cannot do this anymore as it is being done on iCloud and I will have duplicate contacts and all sorts of dire problems.

At the risk of being old fashioned, how do I get rid of iCloud and go back to the procedure first mentioned in Para one ..........?

I feel much happier with it and not having vast numbers of contacts, appontments etc. would prefer to leave iCloud out of it for the moment.

How do I do this thanks?

I have a W7 laptop, an iPad & a MacBook Air and I am thinking of storing photos on one on the above mentioned as a safe guard. I have absolutely no idea at all how this iCloud etc stuff works as it is beyond me in my old age. So what I am looking for is advice on which one I should use and how to go about it. From what I have read One Drive gets the best write up but I would rather take opinions here from members who have had experience & know what they are talking about. Thanks for any help here.

A:OneDrive or iCloud

I use and like DropBox.  They have a free version with no limitations except amount of storage.  I pay $9.99 per month for the basic since I have a lot of photos and some videos.  I back up almost all files I create. And you can share files with others. Without them having access to your folders by a simple right click to create a link like this one:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/ev6a7mgbohlh2o1/2015-07-11%2018.54.52.mp4?dl=0

I switched from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro, so I could utilize the iCloud that comes with my iPad & iPhone 5. It was said I could sync all the devices; which I can, but the colors invert when I click "Open iCloud Control Panel".
The colors invert after the monitor changes to another phase & the screen flips. I went through the trouble shooting prompts & I thought that it was going to clear up. It didn't.
I know that it wants me to setup Outlook, but I already use Thunderbird?
What advice can anyone give from this forum.
Thanks ahead of time.
And I attached the screenshot to illustrate the color change.
I did try the 16bit setting.

A:iCloud issue(s)

Still no bites?
I went ahead & called the maker of the video card, NVIDIA & they said it was an OS problem. Of course Microsoft said it was Apple's & then not to be the only one fixing the blame, Apple said it was a Microsoft problem.
Anyway, took it to the local computer nerd store & they say that iCloud is changing the resolution. The service tech went right in & adjusted the resolution through iCloud, but when clicked on again, the resolution & the colors invert.
I wonder if it makes a difference of what browser that is used, to download iCloud on?

I have a problem with a popup window from iCloud. I am signed in to Apple, and iCloud works, with contacts, calendar, etc. But every now and then I get this popup telling me to sign into iCloud. The problem with this is: I changed my email address and password on my Apple ID, and deleted the old address. I can go in and out of Apple with my new email address, but this popup has the old email address, and none of the passwords I try work. (Not the old PW, and not the new one).
I cannot log into iTunes for the same reason, and it seems my account has disappeared with all my music and books.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?

I returned my old email address to Apple ID, and that seems to help. But I still get the popup, which I ignore. Annoying. Workable but not a fix.

My boss and I used me.com very successfully for his calendar and contacts, but awhile back when he upgraded he was moved to icloud.com, and I can no longer access the site from work. It is not blocked by the firewall, and the browser (firefox) works fine going to any other site. The error I get is: The proxy server is refusing connections.
Nothing has been changed on the browser settings and the browser works fine otherwise. I'm lost without access to this site.

A:Can't access icloud.com

I can get to that site with both my Opera and Firefox browsers but, when I do, it makes it clear that I will need a device (iphone or iPad?) with iOS 5 or a Mac computer with OS X to setup my Apple ID and access it.

I don't know anything about proxy servers but it sounds like it is something your workplace setup or ISP may be using. Is there anyone in your office that deals with techie stuff who might be able to help?

Another possibility is that using the Windows version of Apple's Safari browser might help, but that's complete guesswork on my part; http://www.apple.com/safari/ (although it does state that it works with iCloud).

I have windows 7 and outlook 2010 on a PC. When linking to icloud and enabling it to synch with icloud, icloud took the contacts off my computer (at least it seems that way). In trying to resolve the issue and talking with Apple and Omnitech, a variety of solutions were tried. I now have all my contacts in the right categories showing up on my PC, but it appears that they are not on the PC but in the cloud. My goal is to copy one of my categories, mailing list, into a  new separate folder in the folder list in order to use it to merge with Word and make labels. In the past, I could right click on the mailing list category and drag it to the new folder that I created. It would then ask if I wanted it to copy the file there or move it. I copied it to the new folder and then was able to merge it with word. Currently, when I try to drag the file to the folder, it indicates that this action can not be done. It appears to me that the reason this is occurring is that the contact file is in the cloud not on the computer.  ?? I would like to create a file with my contacts on the PC with the contacts in the right categories and not duplicating what is currently showing up from the cloud. I believe once I do this I will again be able to copy the category to the new folder.

I have a 500gb HD in my Windows 10 Laptop and I also have a Windows 10 Tablet with 9gb spare from 32gb storage with one USB port.

As the bulk of my data is the on 500 drive in the laptop.

What is the best way to share this data between the Laptop and Tablet. Also adding to these two current machines, I am also looking into an iPad. Again the iPad only has 32 or 64gb storage.

Any tips of how solve this, with using MS Cloud/One Drive or iCloud with iPad or of any other method.

A:MS Cloud/One Drive or iCloud from PC

The "best" solution depends on.....

a) How much data (in GB) you need to share between these 3 devices
b) The budget that you have for this
