Lenovo ThinkPad A485 - No Audio through USB-C and DisplayPort

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad A485 - No Audio through USB-C and DisplayPort

I noticed and issue with the ThinkPad A485 (AMD Ryzen) and DisplayPort audio. If using either the Lenovo Pro dock or the Lenovo USB-C dock, I'm unable to get sound to come through my Acer B247Y 24" monitors using a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. The monitors have built-in speakers. It seems Windows 10 thinks it's sending the audio through to the monitors, but nothing comes out. Connecting the HDMI port on the side of the A485 to HDMI on the monitor will produce sound. Using a DisplayPort to female HDMI adapter from the back of either docking station and then connecting an HDMI cable to the adapter and then to HDMI on the monitor will also produce sound. There are no settings on the monitor that seem to do anything for it. I can select the Acer AMD High Definition Audio source in Sound Properties and the little equalizer meter moves when you right-click "Test sound", just no audio comes out using DisplayPort to DisplayPort. I'm not sure if this is an issue with USB-C and DP Alt-Mode which the A485 uses for either the Pro dock or USB-C dock. This does not seem to be an issue with an Intel-based machines using USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 or just Intel and DisplayPort audio. Other testing I've done.1. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer monitor with the Pro dock and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock using a ThinkPad T480. DisplayPort to HDMI will also produce sound.2. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer monitor on the HP EliteBook 745 G5 (also AMD Ryzen) and the HP UltraSlim docking station. DisplayPort to HDMI will also produce sound.3. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does not produce sound through the Acer monitor on the HP EliteBook 745 G5 and the HP USB-C dock (DP Alt-mode). DisplayPort to HDMI will produce sound.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can we please have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS)?According to the website https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devicelist I can see that fairly new Thinkpads like the P52/P72 are already supported. I do not mind waiting (within reasonable time frame) for Lenovo to fix the BIOS issues but at least I would like to be able to update my system without relying on Windows. Can we please have an update on anything revolving this machine? Is LVFS support coming or not? Is a BIOS update planned fairly soon so that I can stick with Windows for a bit longer? Please shed some light on the situation. A simple yes is coming or no is not will suffice so that we can all move on... Thank you.

A:Lenovo, please add LVFS compatibility for Thinkpad A485

Hi,

I can't answer your immediate question, but I'm posting to make sure you know there's a way to get there. Perhaps you're already aware but others may not be...

It still requires Windows, but that could be in a VM if you don't have a Win box handy.  The Windows update exe includes a tool to make a bootable flash drive.  Instructions in the readme.

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r0wuj37w.exe

I realize it's not ideal but at least it's possible.

Hi, It seems that this latest BIOS version (1.02) is causing a few different performance issues for the ThinkPad A485. Once obtaining my A485 I ran some synthetic benchmarks to judge CPU performance. After updating to the latest BIOS, I have noticed a decrease in performance on the order of about 10%. It seems that this BIOS update has allowed the CPU to exhibit more stable performance and CPU throttling behavior under constant load, e.g. as seen in the updates to this article: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-A485-Ryzen-5-Pro-Laptop-Review.334528.0.html but at the cost of some overall performance. Adding to this, after having owned a ThinkPad A485 with a Ryzen 5 2500u and one with a Ryzen 7 2700u, it seems as though Lenovo's power management is aggressively holding back the Vega 10 GPU in the Ryzen 7 2700u, as opposed to the Vega 8 GPU in the Ryzen 5 2500u. Previously, in CineBench R15 (https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/) benchmarks, my A485 with the 2500u would achieve ~37fps during testing, while hardware monitoring software would show that the GPU was achieving a clock speed of about 800mhz. With my new A485 that has the Vega 10 GPU, it is impossible to achieve more than ~25fps under the same test and testing conditions and the hardware monitoring software shows that the GPU can not reach a clock speed higher than what I believe to be the near-base clock of 400mhz. With both laptops, this testing was performed with the Windows po... Read more

Hi, The ThinkPad A485 currently suffers from the same issue as the E485, where if typing on the keyboard quickly, jumbles up the letters. This appears to be a firmware bug as I have tested in in Windows and Linux, and yet it persists. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/E485-strangely-unresponsive-keyboard/td-p... Could I please also have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via LVFS (fwupd.org)? If you need any more information please ping me. Cheers

I just updated the Bios on my machine hoping for the performance to start going further to becoming at least on par with the E485/E585, but to my horror, it now throttles even worse! What used to be a stable 2.5Ghz on the CPU during a Cinebench run on high performance mode, resulting in an underwhelming but acceptable 530-560cb is now 2.0Ghz! This barely puts it in the 450-480cb range, which is almost as bad as quiet mode on the previous bios. This is completely unacceptable. If the E485/E585 can get 600cb consistently, so can the A485. The cooling isn't the problem, just stop limitting the laptop and let it get a little louder/hotter so we can get the performance we have been advertised! 70 degrees is _not_ a suitable temp limit in high performance mode. Please try and fix this. This could be the best Ryzen laptop around, but right now, you're just a fool for buying this over the E485. Here's a look at my findings https://imgur.com/a/qXJS2Bs

I'm loving my new A485 but I have 2 issues that I'm unanble to solve. First:Silent/Perfomance toggle is only showing up sometimes? There is this little speedometer in the taskbar that is either bleu or orange depending on your silent or performance setting. But often this toggle is missing from my taskbar after a sleep / hibernation or full restart. I tried almost everything to figure out what could trigger this issue but I haven't really figured out what it could be... All software is up to date and I'm running Win 10 1809   Second:Installing a second SSD in the wwan port (m.2 2242)Is this even possible? I inserted a new M.2 2242 SATA SSD with 512GB but it does not show up anywhere in the Disk manager or in MS dos (diskpart).  A little help would be welcome for this new Thinkpad user

I am testing the new models of Thinkpad A485 units Model Type 20MV S00U00.OS installs just fine.I have the drivers for enterprise that were downloaded from the lenovo site, they installed just fine.I have a script that as part of the setup it installs around 38 wireless profiles and its the same script that we use in all our models. On this model is causing a BSOD pointing to the "rtwlane.sys" file.  after some research I have downloaded the latest driver from Realtek.  This did not help.I added a pause command on the script so that the script pauses after each individual profile is installed to see if its one particular profile causing the issue. Each time that I run the script, the BSOD happens at a different profile.

A blue screen error (also called a stop error) can occur if a problem causes your PC to shut down or restart unexpectedly. When you experience this type of error, you won?t be able to see things like the Start menu or the taskbar on the screen when your PC is turned on. Instead you might see a blue screen with a message that your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.

Hello, I have recently acquired my very first Thinkpad, an A485 and although I am pretty happy with build quality I am very disappointed with the firmware related issues regarding performance as well as Lenovo's surprising ignorance towards the multiple open issues posted in this very forum. I thought that this a support forum where people post their issues in order to get some answers from Lenovo support employees. I do not like complaining and I know that replying might take some time but why cant we get a simple, "we are investing the issue please stay tuned for further updates". I'm trying to connect my X1 Carbon (4th Gen) to a monitor using HDMI. I have a Lenovo OnePlus dock, which has DisplayPort and VGA outputs but no HDMI. My monitor has VGA, HDMI, and DVI inputs but no DP. I've tried two DP to HDMI adapters (one passive, one active) but neither will work -- I get neither video nor audio. I've already tried updating the BIOS and the graphics driver. I tested this setup on an X230, which also has a DP output. That didn't work, either. I assumed the monitor's DVI input or the cable were bad -- until I tried setting the X230's BIOS display config to use DP during startup. Suddenly, the output worked -- until the boot sequence ended. Then it stopped. This indicates that the DP output on the X230 works, the HDMI input on the monitor works, and the cable and adapter work. So why can't I see video after the machine boots? I can't try this test on the X1. I was only able to get back into the X230's BIOS by connecting the monitor to an HDMI cable (my Pro Dock has an HDMI output). But the X1 and dock lack HDMI connections, so if I think I'll be unable to get back into the BIOS if I set the boot display to digital. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.

I'm not sure about this since I don't have any of those device, but your question seems to be very interesting.

According to the cable you are listing it says "USB 3.1 Type-C to Mini DisplayPort" which may mean that from a computer with USB-C port you can connect a monitor with mini display port plug, but I'm not sure if it will work the other way.

Maybe someone with more experience with USB-C can reply this.

I picked up a Skylake yoga 14 (model # 20FY0002US) and I'm not getting anything from the DVI or HDMI outputs on a mini-DP to HDMI/DP/DVI adapter. This is the particular adapter I tried:http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-HDMI%C2%AE-Passive-Adapter/dp/B013Z71ZI0/ref=sr_1_9?ie... To be clear, the adapter offers DVI, HDMI, and DP outputs, only one of which works at a time. I'm not trying to plug three monitors into it. However, if I hook up a monitor via either the DVI or the HDMI outputs, the computer freezes for 15-60 seconds and nothing shows up on the external monitor. Drivers are all updated. I've tried the adapter on a Surface Pro 3 and it worked flawlessly. I've also tried it with multiple external monitors, so the problem is definitely with my ThinkPad. I've also tried DP1.1 and DP 1.2 versions of the adapter. Again, nothing out of the DVI or HDMI outputs.  Oddly enough, when I tried a simple mini-DP to VGA adapter, it worked.  What gives? This is a pretty important functionality to be missing...

You might need to enable it.

With the monitor connected, turned on and displaying your computer's desktop:

Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "playback devices."

In the white area of the dialog box, right click and make sure both "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" are both checked.

Right click on the various playback devices to make sure they're all enabled.

If you start something with audio, you should see the little green "meters" bouncing on one of the devices. Right click that device and set it to default.

We've been having an ongoing issue with our Lenovo ThinkCentre workstations that are connected via DisplayPort to Lenovo ThinkVision monitors whereby the default audio playback device gets set to the "Intel(R) Display Audio" device rather than the machine's built-in "Realtek High Definition Audio" device. Is there a way to prevent this?

Does anyone have a definitive answer about whether the DisplayPort in this desktop supports audio?  This machine has the default embedded Intel grahpics adapter.   I'm using an HDMI converter cable that works fine with my laptop so I know the cable is good. A DisplayPort with the "++" symbol is supposed to support audio and the 8000 desktop does indeed show the "++" symbol but I do not get audio.  The audio system settings don't show anything other than headphone and speakers.  I have an HP Elitebook 2540P notebook that also has the DisplayPort with the "++" symbol and it works perfectly.  In addition to headphone and speakers, "HDMI" shows up in the sound settings. I tried to find some specs on the Intel website but I'm not sure what video adapter this is.  HP says "4500"  but it looks like it's part of the "series 4" chipset on the Intel website. Thanks for any help!

Dear Support Team,
I have got an E6410 with a DP > HDMI converter. The video part is working fine on the TV but the audio does not work at all (is still remain on laptop).
I have downloaded and installed the latest software and drivers form  dell.com for this type of laptop but the problem is still the same .
I have  the latest  Graphics Driver for the Intel HD Video card from Dell Support Center.
Do you have any Idea ?
Displayport on E6410 doesn't support audio transmition?
Regards
Jorge

Hello,

I have a problem and hope someone might know what`s wrong.

When I play any pcgame sound stops working after 5 to 10 minutes,
but only when I use a DP Cable, with HDMI it works fine.
Movies and music work fine with either cable.

it`s actually not a huge problem, I just have to change plugs if I want to use my PS4, or buy a headphone cable extension. But maybe someone has the solution on hand.

Thank You!

Motherboard: Asus Z87-A with realtek onboard sound
Graphics: Gforce GTX 770
Monitor: Asus VN279Q
