Comp slowing down and programs not responding?

Q: Comp slowing down and programs not responding?

Just as the title says computer is slowing down and programs not responding I'm having this prob on my laptop which is vista and my desktop which is win 7 but it's worse on my desktop it's so bad right now I can't open task manager or adjust the time and no programs will respond but the firefox browser is working slowly. it takes around 4-8 hours for this to get so bad I gotta restart the comp. Any idea what it could be?

Preferred Solution: Comp slowing down and programs not responding?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could be heat, too much on the Hard drive,IE temp /cookie/cache is too full. When was the last time you cleaned out the case? How about deleting Cookie and temporary internet files? Oh and how about the last time you defragged the HD?

Hi all,

This isn't really a security question, but it does involve anti-virus software so I hope it's in the right forum.

I just reformatted my old IBM Aptiva for a friend, did a clean install of Win98 SE and it's still almost as slow as when it had a trojan virus! It is an older machine, an AMD K6 - 266 processor, 32 MB Ram, but I was wondering since I installed some anti-virus software if this could be slowing it down? I have installed the following freeware programs:

-AVG Free
-Spywareblaster
-Spybot S&D
-Ad-Aware

I checked the minimum system requirements for all, and it seems to indicate that it's ok, I just wondered if anyone has an opinion as to whether any of these programs are too much for the system and may be slowing it down, and if so if there may be some better alternatives. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Kirsty

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Compaq/Presario 5100CA with 40GB HD, 312 MB, and Windows XP Pro installed recently. Upgrade from Windows ME.
Have been having major slowdowns. I know that memory is a problem and this computer may be due to be used as a doorstop but I just feel that something else is going on.
I have installed FreeRAM XP Pro and am constantly running at 40 to 50 % RAM free. HD is operating with 25.18 GB Hard Drive Free Space. I have run Scandisk and Defragmenter.
I ran Adaware this morning as suggested by a forum on this site and have just run Hijack this.

Well, I recently bought a Compaq tower with the standard stuff installed.

Compaq 5430US
Pentium 4 CPU 1.8GHz
1 GB of DDR Ram (2 512 sticks)
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 w/ AGP8X Graphics Card

Everything runs great except that it keeps bogging down when I run more then one program. It does this when I run my music player and my internet explorer, or when I'm writting something to the harddrive or a cd. I've tried everything I possible could to try and fix it. I've bought new RAM, had several diagnostics run on the motherboard and cpu, checked the video card. I even went as far as to do a complete factory restore to see if that fixes it. Nothing seems to work.
The computer when it first starts runs fine, then it does this choppy freezing that seems to affect the entire comp. It doesn't seem to be thinking when this happens, more like taking a quick nap before it continues on. It'll do this everytime I go to do something. I can't even have a screensaver run because it freezes up for a few minutes.
I'm really lost as to what to do. Any ideas?

Hello. I got sent a virus on MSN messenger, and, in a very stupid move, I accepted the file (in my defense, I was really out of it due to lack of sleep). Anyway, I deleted the file, ran Avast Antivirus, AdAware and SuperAntiSpyware and removed/quarantined any threats found.

However, my computer is still running slow, MSN keeps sending random messages to my contacts (I had to stop signing on), and yesterday, when I tried running Avast, my computer restarted by itself. Same with Adaware.

I recently purchased a Apollo nvidia GeForce FX 5200 SE 256mb, I upgraded from a Geforce4 MX420 64mb, and I am running a Dell 2.53ghz 256mb ram with XP. After I installed it and put the drivers on, I noticed it slowed down a little, so I tried installing newer drivers off a Guru3D.com, first I installed StarStorm 5672 - X drivers, I tried installing those and it really slowed down my comp, I got an error right at first when windows starts up and it was slowed down big time, so I installed ForceWare 61.11 drivers and it speeded up a little bit but was still slower, so now I am using the original drivers that came on the CD, but the log on takes forever, and it loads each program very slowly, but after it loads its fine, theres no chopping in video games or anything.

I've scanned and cleaned spyware, ran norton..no viruses...and the load times are still the same. I'm inches away from reformating, but I don't really want to. Could someone please help me out, give me a link for new drivers, or something that will help speed up my computer the loads are taking over 2-3 minutes.

Okay maybe its not my computer, but its my girlfriends computer. She can't really do anything on it because of how slow it is. Thus I am posting here for her.

She downloaded some program that she thought was safe though it doesn't seem like it now. She needs help badly, she keeps getting pop-ups every 5 minuets, random .dll files are coming up as viruses that she keeps putting in the virus vault(she uses free AVG) and her computers start menu bar thing keeps reverting back to the classic look even though she has it set to the windows XP look(she has windows XP as her OS).

Below is a HJT log, if you need her to download and run something I can give her that link over MSN. Usually her Firefox just time outs when trying to load a web page because of how slow it is.

Also, Internet Explorer occassionally opens trying to go to an antispyware website. Also I have a yellow triangle in the bottom corner telling me security alerts and to Download antispyware.

Any help you guys can give me will be appreciated. I currently have Trend Micro PCcillin, Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG antispyware 7.5, and Smitfraud Fix. The last 4 were downloaded after getting the virus and checking out other forums and advice.

I have done a Clean of Smitfraud in safe mode and it didnt clean em up. I don't know much about viruses, but i have been viewing forums and advice, and was trying to clean it out myself.

The virus names are PSW.X-Vir, [email protected], and [email protected]

Here's the most recent hi jack this log.

A:3 Viruses Found, Slowing my comp

I just remembered some more interesting things happening recently that I think I should report. A Critical System Warning window appears in the middle of my screen. It's not exitable and it asks me if I want to download antispyware. I don't want to hit No because I don't want more problems.

Also 2 new things continue to be on my Desktop and I think the respawn when I StartUP. I delete them and they come back after startup. They are "Live Safety Center" and "Online Security Guide". Live Safety Center has the Blue Icon of the Windows Shield with an exclamation point. Online Security Guide has a Green Icon of the Windows Sheild with a check mark.

Hi all,

I'm really hoping someone can help me as I'm having big problems with my PC and it's my main source of income. Not really sure what information is needed but I'll go over what I know.

PC was working fine on Friday, but randomly started having problems this morning. As far as I'm aware the only thing that changed during the course of the weekend was an automatic patch downloaded by an online game.

The PC is very slow to boot, taking maybe 3-4x longer than previous. Once booted it seems okay for a few minutes or until I interact with the desktop, then it goes to hell. It takes maybe 5-10 minutes just to open a folder and twice as long to launch a program. Anything that does eventually open quickly greys out and has the "not responding" error in the title area of the window.

I've repaired the registry. I've not been able to scan for Malware as on all 3 occasions a blue screen error has appeared sometime during the scan, 2-3+ hours in. I don't know what I can do as I'm unable to actually use the PC itself for long enough to be able to diagnose the problem.

I need to get it sorted by tomorrow but I'm at a loss. I don't have my Windows disk and there's vital information on the computer that I need to backup before wiping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs
Windows 7
8GB Ram
i7 3.7ghz
Geforce 7700

Thanks.

Hello, For a couple days i have been attempting to fix my computer myself, but now i am asking help from you.
Continuous pop ups are slowing down my computer, (the url is always: http://adnetserver.com/?cmpname=vm_...888_b4fe4312+6401E5A8BACD4DE082E303FA191A22DB ) or windows saying that i have a certain virus and i need to have such and such and click OK to download and so on pop up also.

Spybot cannot seem to get rid of two problems named:
Advertising.com
Virtumonde.generic
(i also have ad aware)

I have also read various forums that relate to my problem and tried following the steps given...but the pop ups continue. Perhaps i am doing something wrong? I would greatly appreciate any help!
(This is additional information but i was also suspicious that this may be w?inspool.exe because AVG cannot seem to get rid of this.)

see if you can check what your CPU temperature is when watching movies or something. I know you said, 51C, but is that the highest it goes, or what it is when you randomly check it.

I recommend that you actually stress the computer, and read the highest temperature it actually goes to.

Also, for a processor this new, doing what you mentioned shouldn't be stressing the CPU much at all. I'm thinking you might have some other processes running.
BTW, thats a great first post.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. My computer started freezing and bogging as well as getting "commercials" playing audio in the back ground. I couldn't find a web page open or any application that would play these adds so i looked at my computer usage and saw that when everything was shut off there was this msb.exe using a sizable amount of my pcu. So I looked it up and -oh boy- it turns out that Im not the only person having this problem.

Now Im sure I picked this thing up at some unsavory site but i still need some help getting rid of this as its seriously causing computer failure at times. And of course never at a time when you want it lol.

Im including my HJT log and I hope Ive given enough info for someone to at least tell me where to get started in correcting the problem.

I sincerely thank whoever it is that can spare the time helping me.

Hi,I use Windows 10 with mozilla firefox and for the past 3-4 months I have been having recurring problems with mozilla not responding and being really slow, hanging etc.
I have tried refreshing etc. to no avail....I have managed a couple of times to get it back working reasonably well then the same problem starts up again and I keep forgetting how I managed to fix it.
I have used other browsers in the past such as chrome and opera but have always went back to firefox and was thinking about trying a different browser again and so installed pale moon but I can't import my bookmarks and passwords to it.
I am not sure wether to persevere with firefox or try another browser as I am getting fed up with the slowdown problem.
Can someone tell me what other browsers other than chrome and opera to try out and what should I try in order to fix the problems in firefox?

A:problems with mozilla firefox not responding, slowing down etc.

How do you typically remove obsolete files from the user's profile folder? I mean, cache files, old and/or damaged .sqlite files, session backups, downloaded websites, crash reports, old dump files, minidumps,  etc.. Perhaps there is so much rubbish and damaged files so that they impede the normal operation?
For example the Firefox default enabled cache size is 358400 bytes, if You don't delete them, then Firefox cannot work any way, because it don't delete them itself and also will not over write nothing. User simply must empty this folder.
If You run regularly for example CCleaner, then it cleans what is primary necessary.

Confused and Needing Help, I am running Windows XP Professional with SP3 as well as ALL the updates and corrective installs, at least according to my copy of Belarc Adviser. I am currently using an ASUS A8V-VM SE motherboard, a 2.2Ghz AMD Athlon 64 processor, 512mb of DDR-400-184 Pin SDRAM, a Behringer UCA-202 USB Outboard Fully Digital Audio Adapter which connects directly to my home audio system, a NU-CDRW/DVD DBW 521 & a LITE ON LTR-52246S DVD/CDR Units one of which is non functional, and a RT73 USB Wireless LAN Card. The rest is pretty standard interface equipment. The defective drive is soon to be replaced and the SDRAM maxed out to 2Gig, but not before the system is working properly. So I have this laptop for maybe two years now, in the past few weeks, I thought I noticed that some of my games are running slower than before, notably Starcraft 2, LoL, Diablo 3, etc.
The thing is, it's gotten worse and worse ever since, now I can barely run Starcraft 2 with all settings at low.
Even worse, I tried doing some stuff to improve performance, disabling a few things I read were safe online and ajusting my pagefile.
And now, windows explorer often just stops responding for no reason and must be restarting, and this morning, it stops responding EVERY TIME I try do to a search in the search bar.
I have run various scans with anti-viruses, tried the sfc/scannow thingie which didn't find anything, ran CCleaner and Wise registry cleaner, tried clearing space on my hard drives, but nothing helps apparently.
And now I'm growing really tired, seriously considering just backing everything up and resetting windows altogether, though I'd really like to avoid that =/.

From ny investigations, I have noticed that IAstoricon.exe and MGSysctrl.exe are both taking up a LOT of I/O read (120,000 and 245,000 respectfully), but I have no idea if it's normal or not.

Other than that, I can just say my laptop runs best right after boot, and gradually degrades to the point where I get ridiculously low and unplayable FPS in games...

I didn't really know what specs and info to give you guys so I just attached my dxdiag to the topic.

Please help!

to sum up, I can't run task manager, msconfig, any kind of malwarebytes type program, MSE doesn't detect anything, it blocks certain sites, safe mode can accessed but I can't do anything with it - an error show up shortly after running it.

Hi,

With my laptop, It seems to crash and stops responding after a while. I think my computer has a small bug but I cant run any scans because the laptop crash's. Even if its left on then after some time the laptop will slow downs its response time with opening something as small as a txt file and the mouse will stop responding and then just move slow.

Programs I have:
Windows Vista (Basic)
Kaspersky Anti Virus,
Spybot Search & Destory,
Spysweeper,
Ad-Aware

When i run them they just stop responding as does the laptop. Is it a security issue or is there something I can do?
The memory usage seems to be a bit high as this image shows.

I do have 1.5GB RAM

Help Please?

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition

Click "OK" , then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

We started noticing trouble in our internet browser Google Chrome. Gmail would not respond at all and YouTube would drag loading videos. We have two computers in our home and the other computer works just fine with gmail and youtubes videos so we believe our internet connection is stable. I uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it but got same results. Also, internet explorer was having the same issues. Now, the entire computer system is running slow as if there is computer issues not browser issues.

Ran MS Security Essentials scans but no problems. Malware Bytes full version runs on our computer and no detected problems. Ran CCleanup but no detected problems but did remove alot of junk.

We are at a loss on how to proceed. We have had very good success in the past using Tech Guy support so we thought we would reach out for help.

Thanks!!

So in an attempt to better protect my computer, I think I have drastically slowed down it's performance. Not too long ago I had a virus on my computer that would not let me connect to the internet. I was not able to fix the problem and ended up rebooting my computer to its original factory settings. I was previously using system mechanic as my antivirus software, but it was outdated. So I installed the following free programs:

1. AVG Antivirus (free version)
2. Comodo firewall
3. Spybot - Search and Destroy

As of late my internet has been incredibly slow. Pages take forever to load (I feel like I'm back in the dial up era). Am I running too many programs here? What else can I do to speed up my computer?

Here's a little info on my computer. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 (about 4 years old), pentium M processor, and use internet explorer 7 as my browser.

A:Are my security programs slowing down my computer?

You could use task manager to simply monitor your system resource usage and what not.

To browse more safely and also have a chance to add about any kind of addon you want you can download and install firefox.

Much better in my opinion.
