Preferred Solution: Inform me about refurbished laptops

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

I've never purchased used or refurbished computer gear.

The last couple of days I was looking at some refurbed laptops for
a friend. He wants to install 98SE. 512 MB of memory is about the
limit for 98, so an older model laptop is probably a good idea.

I asked someone who has purchased several dozen refurbed (not used)
laptops for his business. I believe what he told me told me, but it doesn't
make a whole lot of sense!

All these so called "refurbished" laptops still needed new hard drives
and battery packs. Even the CMOS battery, which only costs three
or four bucks had to be replaced.

There is a popular Dell refurb that I've seen listed for $239.00. The specs
would be perfect for running 98SE. If a service contractor found a defective
hard drive or battery pack and replaced it, the retailer could never sell this
laptop for such a low price.

So, what's the final verdict on these laptops. If my friend buys one should
he expect to spend more money replacing some of the major components,
or are there online retailers selling refurbed laptops that have been completely
tested and repaired?

Hey guys, I have some questions for you. My current laptop is falling apart, so I'm looking at getting a new one, and since I don't want to spend over $500 on it and I don't need real high performance, I was wondering how good refurbished laptops are.
My brother has a six year old Dell Inspiron 1520 which is still in great condition for it's age, so I was really looking at one of those. I don't need real high graphics capabilities, but I would like to be able to run Crysis, Crysis Warhead, BM:AA, AC, FSX, NFS:HP2, etc. on it on low to medium settings, all of which we've done on the Inspiron. Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks, FSG

A:[SOLVED] Refurbished Laptops

Only issue I have with refurbs is usually the warranty.
Remember the 4-5-6 year old units may have the problem 8xxxm series nvidia graphics chips I so I would stay away from them.

Looking for the cheapest, refurbished laptop that works best with free wifi.

I'd prefer HP laptop suggestions, but anything other than Dell will do. Never had any good experiences with Dell.

I just need a good refurbished laptop for getting on public wifi once in a while. Otherwise I really don't need a laptop. So, the cheaper the better.

I'm not really versed on electronics, especially since they change so often. So, looking for some suggestions on refurb laptops that will work for my needs.

Are they okay to buy or is it a hit-and-miss? Or is it just a 'No'?
Also, sites don't say what has been damaged and repaired in them.
And if it's refurbshed, does that mean it could have been used for a few years, sent back and repaired? Or does refurbished mean reasonably new?

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for the purposes of hires graphics production (PS, Illustrator, Painter etc.) and school. I'm looking at a few and I was hoping for feedback on the system specs for each. Some are refurbished and I'd like to know what experience, if any, anyone here has with Tiger Direct's refurbished laptops.

Here are the ones I'm looking at:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 and Dell Studio 17
My questions about these:

Is the Intel Core i7 really worth the extra money, or would a much cheaper Core 2 Duo serve my purposes just fine? I'm not really going to be playing games on this thing.
I've never heard of Lenovo, should I be wary of them?

MSI A6005 and Acer Aspire AS5732Z
The main difference is that the first has dedicated graphics and the second doesn't.

Any advice?

A:Advice on laptops, Refurbished generally okay?

Lenovo bought out the IBM line of PC's, they are pretty good.

No you don't need the i7, core 2 duo is plenty of processor.

Hi, I am looking for something specific and don't know where to find it. I need an equalizer that controls all sound on my system. I know most software like video players, mp3 players, and even my sound card (Audigy 2 Value) software has built in EQ, but they are all limited and not too functional.

The Windows Volume control has treble and bass bars, but that is also extremely limited.

I am looking for something like a plugin for windows volume control, that is an equalizer, and doesn't eat up a lot of seperate system resources (e.g. I don't need an entire software suite of functions, JUST an EQ)

If anyone could recommend something please, that would be great.

HP collected my laptop for repair on 9th June 2016.  It is now 16th June 2016 and I haven't heard from HP on the status - that it is received by HP, that it is being repaired, etc - nothing. I searched for repair status on HP website and couldn't find any data on my unit.  I called HP support and the person also could not find any data and told me she would send an email to her colleagues. Is this what is meant by the 3-day onsite service?  Oh, by the way, I logged my request for repair much earlier, and in fact received an email from HP on 2 Jun that "we regret to inform you that the unit which need to be replace is currently not available.  We will update you once the part has arrived."  So total cycle time now is more than 2 weeks.  The 3-day on-site thing is a scam.

My dad's recently set up a WEP-encrypted wireless system for the home, and according to him we managed to use 2 gig of the download limit in one day. He claims that it could be someone outside who's managed to crack the WEP password and is now leeching off our crappy wireless. I'm trying to find out if there is a "super hacker that managed to crack the password in 3 seconds" leeching off the wireless.

He's using a D-Link DSL-G624T wireless router-modem. Is there a way to get it to inform the host computer when someone connects to the wireless system (with a pop-up balloon or something)? Trying to change the WEP to WPA doesn't work for some reason, as the router won't take to it.

I am getting a new computer and have everything figured out except for the mobo and memory. I don't understand exactly what the following are, and how they work:

1) Dual Channel Memory. If I have 512mb on one channel, and 512mb on the other, do I now have dual 512, where it acts like a RAID 0 array for hard drives, or do I have 1GB of RAM and it still SORT OF acts like a RAID 0 array?

2) What are the northbridge and southbridge on motherboards? Could you explain this in detail?

3) What does the front side bus and back side bus do? (I know most mobo's don't have a back side bus, but would still like to know what it is)

4) The front side bus, people say an 800mhz isn't really 800mhz, its 200 x 4 or 400 x 2. What does all this mean?

5) AMD's hypertransport technolgy. Its not really a Front Side Bus, so what is it? And why do they advertise it as 1.6GHZ but its only 800mhz FSB? All this is very confusing!

6) Intel's EMT64, is the processor 64 bit or does it just emulate 64 bit instructions?

If anyone could explain this that would be great, or reply with links that explain this stuff. Sorry for all the questions in one post, I am obviously very confused!

You will have 1GB of RAM and that is exactly how RAID 0 works.

2) What are the northbridge and southbridge on motherboards? Could you explain this in detail?Click to expand...

These are the two main chips that make up a chipset. North bridge is a high speed device that interconnects the CPU and RAM. South bridge handles all the perpherals like PCI cards, hard drives, keyboard etc. Some chipsets come on one chip so there is no "north" and "south".

3) What does the front side bus and back side bus do? (I know most mobo's don't have a back side bus, but would still like to know what it is)Click to expand...

Frontside bus is the channel btween the CPU and RAM. Backside bus is the connection between the CPU core and L2 cache. For modern CPUs the BSB is a feature of the CPU, not the motherboard since both the CPU core and the cache sit on the same chip.

4) The front side bus, people say an 800mhz isn't really 800mhz, its 200 x 4 or 400 x 2. What does all this mean?Click to expand...

The FSB has a clock signal of 200MHz, but data is transferred on both the rising and falling edges of the signal (I hope you know how a clock signal looks like). Also, on every tr... Read more

In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

I bought a refurbished HP SFF PC. The COA sticker says "Windows 7 Pro for refurbished PC's".
I haven't turned it on yet to see if it has a bunch of bloat ware from HP.
Can I download the Windows 7 Pro .iso and do a clean install using the COA sticker?

I bought the computer to mess around with, it won't have any important files on it and will be used by guests that come over, I don't want them touching my main PC.

A:refurbished PC COA

Most refurbs have minimal bloatware - but I've never actually seen one that hasn't been in use for a while.
They are supposed to be imaged from clean (i.e. no the maufacturer's) disks from the refurbisher, so unless your was one of the bigger outfits, it's likely to be bare-bones, with possibly an AV, and an Office Trial on it.

So far as I know, the COA Key is valid in exactly the same way as a 'normal' one - and can be reinstalled as many time as you like on the same hardware, using either the refurbisher's recovery media or retail media.

not sure if this is the best place for the question, but i saw peripherals in the description of the forums.

so my question, is there a guide or something giving me the heads up about refurbished items? like are they trust worth or something along those lines. or may i ask you guys about what you think of it? is it a good idea to buy refurbished? this is pertaining to a camera.

I guess it depends how much you trust the retailer and what guarantee comes with it.

Personally, I buy refurbished very often. Most products are not tested when made. A sample size is chosen that assures a high percentage of working products, say 99% or more, but it is unusual that every single product coming down the assembly line is tested.

So, some bad ones get through. The company assumes a level of acceptable failure. But refurbished items have been tested and repaired, so they are far more likely to be working than even the new ones. And if they give you a guarantee, even if only 30 days, any major fault will surely appear in that time.

I have always had good luck with the refurbished items at Tigerdirect.com, but I would be hesitant to buy any from a retailer that I had never done business with before. Guarantess are only good if backed up with action.

(Keep in mind, also, that some items labelled as "refurbished" may actually be brand new, either as returns or that have minor cosmetic imperfections. I got an electronic encyclopedia at 10% retail price because it had a barely visible discoloration of the case. That is usually explained on the sale site if they do this sort of thing.)

Considering that laptops have a life span of about five years, according to some websites. Is it worth it then to buy a laptop that was manufactured about three to five years ago, and is refurbished, but has a i5 processor. Or, get a newer laptop but a much less powerful processor, less RAM, etc

I do want it to last a couple years. So perhaps there's the answer. If you just need it for a short term, then get the refurbished one. If you want it for a more long term, get the new one.

A:Refurbished or new?

I worked for 7 years at HP Financial Services (refurbished Servers/Workstations/Desktops/Notebooks).
The parts that are prone to wear on -i5..-Notebooks:

KB (user damage if cannot be identified at the time of testing e.g. Liquid Damage), otherwise worn keys (but usually then the KB is replaced at the Testing Center)
Optical Drive (if defective and not replaced)

Get a refurbished one, but check it.
After all, even brand new one can fail on you..

What exactly is refurbished computer?
Is it good?Is it bad to buy one?

As I understand it, something was bad with it (hdd, RAM, Mobo, etc), the pc was sent back, they fix it and have to sell it as used now. It could be as good as a new one, perhaps better but warranty will be shorten by a lot.

I'm sure others will have a better answer though.

Opinions please. I have the chance to purchase a refurbished Dell OptiPlex computer. It has: Intel P4, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB DDR RAM, 160HD 7200 RPM, Pioneer 18xDVD +R DVD RW dual layer, ATi Radeon 9550 AGP 256 MB DDR w/VGA, DVI, TV out. It comes with an 18" Dell Ultra Sharp flat panel LCD monitor, Harmon Kardon speakers, Windows XP PRO w/SP2, Windows Office XP PRO. 5 PCI slots, 8USB ports (2 frt and 4 rear), 2 serial ports, 1 parallel printer port, key board and mouse. Seller claims it is upgradeable to Windows Vista. All for $720.00. Question, I am an average user not into business computing just small time gaming and home style browsing. Is this a buy or is it a better choice to purchase a new Dell home PC and probably pay more. Thanks in advance.

A:Refurbished Computer

Do NOT buy that computer. Its not that great of a computer expecially an optiplex with a P4 2.4. the 18" monitor is nice as well. But you can get a new dell with a 19" flat screen for like 699 and it comes with a warranty.

If you are looking to play some games, do not use Windows Vista. I have experienced this myself and it sucks for gaming. There are barely any updates and drivers for it yet. I reinstalled my XP for the time being. And for like 50$ you can get an OK video card off of www.newegg.com that will be better than that 9550 whichs sucks anyways.

With this Dell right here, it would beat the crap out of that used computer you were looking at.

It comes with;
19" Flatscreen Monitor
Pentium D Processor (Dual Core @ 2.8Ghz Which is basically 2.8 x 2 = 5.6Ghz)
1GB Dual Channel Ram DDR2 667Mhz
250GB SATA HDD (7200 RPM)
48X CD-RW/ DVD Combo Drive
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Windows Vista Premium

Yes this computer only comes with 1GB of ram, but that is enough if you dont plan on doing any serious gaming. ANd As for Vista, call them up and tell them you want XP and not Vista, but if you really want Vista go for it.

You can mess around with that Dell setup and customize it a little to even make it cheaper or a little bit more to have some nice components.

VGA card - I would be willing to bet that is does not have PCIe x 16. More than likely it has an AGP slot and a PCI x1 slot. Go with an AGP sl... Read more

Does anybody know what I can do as far as reporting a company for issuing those fake refurb COA's? They look real but dont include a key on them. I ended up with a machine with one years ago but ever since ive always seen keys on the stickers. Or maybe microsoft has a way to pull up the COA based on that serial number on those COA's if they are real?

A:Refurbished COA question...

I have seen older versions of Windows that had a separate Product Key label from the COA/Certificate of Authenticity sticker, usually was on the case or sleeve holding the disc. Never was a problem with Win2000 or WinME and earlier. Was there a problem in Activating WinXP or Win7? Wasn't been with the two refurbs I bought but the discs for either can't be used on a different machine.

I am looking to get another copy of Windows 7 (Full version) - There is a "disclaimer" on the ones that I have seen lately that states that it is "Intended for distribution with a refurbished PC". What I would like to know is if this version is the same as a full retail version from Microsoft, or is it limited in some way ?? - Perhaps like the OEM version that can only be installed on one machine (not moved to another replacement system)

Thanks for any help

Hi! I've been looking at laptops for my brother to use when he goes to Ireland. I think he wants it just to watch movies on the plane. He's not computer savvy---he didn't know a laptop is actually a computer. He just wanted to know if he could watch movies on it. I found a site that sells refurbished laptops. Are they worth the money to take a chance that they'll last for a few years? The one's I've perused either say Grade A Refurbished or Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I have used Microdream for some time now not just for pc's but other computer accessories.
The Win 7 that I am using now came from them a year and a half ago and so far, I have had no problems with it.
They are based in Devon, England.

Hi all, This may not be the most productive post around, as I'm just looking for information, not a solution. I recently purchased a refurbished x131e chromebook (AMD processor) from the online store. Upon receiving it, I found that the device has an `enterprise enrollment' with some k12 school in Missouri. In order to do anything with computer (including installing an alternative OS), I need the device to be unenrolled. I've contact Google, but it seems that the process will take a few weeks. It seems to me that the device should have been unenrolled when Lenovo refurbished it. Is this the normally the case? Or is there an obvious reason I'm missing that they don't? If there is such a reason, then it seems that Lenovo should inform the customer of refurbished Chromebooks that they may not be able to use the product for up to three weeks following the purchase. Any information on this would be helpful, as I've found plenty regarding the unenrollment of used Chromebooks, but nothing regarding the fact that refurbished Chromebooks may remain enrolled. Thanks!

Depends on where you buy it, if it is official Lenovo products, a refurbished machine would have a sticker at the bottom saying the product is refurbished, and would have a 'REF' in the model number if my memory serve me correctly.

our IT man was told he must get refurbished ink for all printers to save money, I have an HP Photosmart D7260. I recall reading that refurb ink for these printers can do damage to the printer, is this so? is there evidence for this reported by users NOT HP?

A:using refurbished ink for photosmart

Just make sure the ink refurb place will replace any printer damaged by exploded cartridges.

Yes, they leak and explode.

Hello All,

I am the proud owner of a refurbished Toshiba laptop, which looks really nice not a mark on it, I hope the inside is good too.

This is the first Win 8 machine I've had, previously win 7 which I love and still own 5 machines with it on. Now it being a refurbish, the documents and instructions did not come so I'm a bit blind to it all and it is very different to win 7. So I start it up and there's this screen saying something to me I don't understand System preparation tool 3.14, what the? Can someone please explain what it is and what it does and do I need it and will it keep bothering me forever?

Also when turning the machine on with the button windows boots and I get a blue screen with an admin telling me my account has been disabled, ah that's no good I can't access the machine, so bit worried I hit restart and all is good it comes to the desk top, Does anyone know what this means? I don't want to login, I just want to up a run, no passwords no mucking about. Can someone help with that also?

Thanks for listening and thanks for helping out

A:new refurbished laptop

Thanks I had a look around and after reading a post by Kari I got it sorted I hope, so after giving Microsoft all my info and setting up an account I'm up and away. It's a pity you have to do all that just to have and use computer.

I purchased a refurbished dell 12 months ago. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Pro and Microsoft office 2010. It has become to corrupted and slow I am considering transferring my files and Microsoft office 2010 to another hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 7 Home edition.
Will the Microsoft office 2010 reinstall on windows 7 home?

A:Refurbished desktop

Hi nocar39,

You can definitely back up files but NOT programs. Microsoft Office 2010 will definitely re-install fine on a Windows 7 home computer but you cannot backup the MS Office 2010 program files and expect the program to work when you transfer it back onto the laptop, after you have re-installed Windows 7. You would definitely need to re-install the MS Office 2010 as well.

Hope everything works out well for you.
