Solved: ipconfig's window has a short life

Q: Solved: ipconfig's window has a short life

The window employed by the RUN ipconfig command appears and disappears in a fraction of a second (too short to read its content)

ipconfig /all yields te same result
ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt does not manage to write anything to the .txt file

On the other hand the command services.msc generates the nowmal window with information.

I am using a SONY VAIO Notebook model PCGGRT716S

Has anyone come across this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear All,

I've recently upgraded my work PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and later this year I'll probably be upgrading the rest of our PCs in my organisation.

We have Active Directory and Exchange set up on the Win2000 Server which is quite new to me.
Every time I start my PC it doesn't connect to anything on the network. I have no Outlook, Internet or anything networked based.

To fix it I have to open a Command Prompt window and type this:
ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew
Then everything works perfectly.
Anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it please.

Many Thanks,

Hy, I bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-FZ485U notebook with windows vista ultimate. In the first weeks the wireless adapter worked but after an update the wireless cannot connect to any signal. I tried everything immaginable: I used the repair conenction feature from vista, reinstall the driver, reset winsock, disable ip6, choose different settings for wireless card and still nothing. I cannot connect. The only other simptom I fund was that the card is not shown in ipconfig /all window. The cable connection works. All the drivers are up-to-date and "working properly". P.S.: system restore is disabled P.P.S.: I really don't want to reinstall the "marvelous" windows vista ultimate If anyone have any idea how to solve this please reply!

I'm trying to get my new AT&T 2-wire modem/router to work. AT&T has been no help to me at all. Their technical "support" is one of the worst I've ever encountered! I've suffered their inneptness for over 2 weeks, and still cannot get a technician to come to my home! They claim that my DSL service is installed, yet my 2-wire modem/router DSL light continuously flashes red. I can't connect to the internet with it.

So, I'm trying to follow the steps I found on Tech Support Guy that were given to another member (a long time ago).

(Here's the old link that I saved: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/748775-having-trouble-router-newbie.html)

I'm trying to use my MS Windows XP Home Edition to 'run' the command: ipconfig /all

But, the 'DOS' box pops up on my display then disappears after only 1/2 second. Therefore, I can't get the info.

What do you recommend to solve that particular issue (before I post again with my main problem of not being able to get DSL to work)?

You missed the steps about first opening a command prompt window.

When I got my Spectre about 6 mo ago I go 8-10 hrs on a charge when doing word processing and e-mail.  However that recently dropped to less than 4 hrs.  After spending several hours with HP Support, we could find nothing obviously wrong with the machine.  A look at the Task Manager CPU useage revealed nothing extraordinary and the HP Battery check indicated the battery was "ok".  In preparing to send the machine back to HP, I decided to first try to reimage it, i.e. wipe the disk and reload the operating system.  HP makes this easy to do.  Once the new image was installed I methodically  loaded each of my major applications one-by-one and retested the battery life after each install.  I now get 8-10 hrs of battery life. During this process I did not update any of the drivers.  This suggests that one of the recent driver upgrades is the culprit to my battery problem so I'm now much more cautious in accepting these.  I always do a restore point before proceeding and test the battery life afterwards. Testing the battery life can be done in several ways.  The key is consistency.  The method I use is to edit the power settings so that the screen stays on and the machine remains awake.  I then just let it sit for a while.  I typically see a loss of 10% of battery power per hour.  Prior to the reimage I saw 25-30% reduction per hour.

Hi forumi have had my X220 for many years, and i have always been very happy with it.  Not using it so much right now, but it is still important to me.After i updated to Windows 10, i noticed that the battery life was getting shorter - and the battery is even drained when the X220 is not used.  My 6 and 9 cell batteries did the same, so i thought that it was because they are old (5-6 years i guess).  Therefore i bought a new 6 cell battery ...... but unfortunately it behave in exactly the same way.  When fully charged and used for max 20 minuttes pr. day, after 3 days the battery is 'flat'.Does anyone have any idea what to do?Best regardsHenrik - Denmark

I just recently bought this yoga 720 and saw online that the battery life is supposed to be around 8 to 10 hours. However, I am only getting around 4 hours of battery life. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or what might be causing it. Recently I've only been watching youtube videos so I'm not running any super intensive programs. I have 8th gen i7, 16gb ram, 1 tb ssd, and the uhd 620 graphics card.

A:Yoga 720: short battery life

YouTube videos can be more intensive than you think. And there may be other things running in the background (virus scanners, Windows Updates, cloud storage synchronization) that are shortening your battery life. Battery life claims on just about anything battery-powered are usually best-case scenarios. I can get 6-8 hours out of my 920. But to do that, I do little more than word processing in airplane mode with the screen brightness as dim as I can handle it. Virus scanners are disabled, no external devices attached. If I connect it to my television and stream Amazon movies with the wireless keyboard and mouse attached for control, then 4-5 hours is about all I get, too.

Check Task Manager to see what else is runing. Tweak your virus scanner and any other background programs you have. Turn off anything you can. That'll stretch it.

Hi, Do you know what is Life-Time Warranty REALLY means ? All standard consumers products have 1 year or 2 years (in some countries) warranty. Not just HP, all of them. You can BUY option or options to get more than standard warranty by laws applicable for your country and HP has Care Packs, you can extend warranty with your money. Regards.

Hi cdeveringham, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

According to the PSREF (PDF), when new that machine delivered "up to 8.2 hr" of life. It won't get anywhere near that for two reasons: 1. The machine is at least 5 years old and the battery will be close to the end of its life ,and normal aging results in degraded runtime (unless you replaced it). 2. The claimed runtime, particulalry at that time, assumed a favorable setup rarely used in real life. I would assume about half for a new battery, less if your setup is more power-hungry.

As for them getting hotter than "normal" it's possible that what today's Windows and applications are working the machine harder than they were 5 years ago. Lenovo doesn't publish "max heat given off".

Hope this helps!

I bought a Yoga 920 about 6 weeks ago and have been loving it, largely because of the touch screen and pen features. However, I've had to replace the batteries in my Active Pen 2 twice already--they are not getting anywhere near the advertised 2000 hours of battery life, I would say they are dying after more like 50-100 hours of active use (I generally only use the pen to read and comment on documents for work).  Are there any settings to improve battery life? Should I not be storing it near the laptop? Is my pen defective? What can I do about this?

Hello. My 4th gen ipod's battery is quite short (4-5 hrs) after a full charge. I did all of the recommendations to extend battery life and charge from the wall mount. Also I noticed that when I synch my ipod to my computer, the back gets quite hot and the screen starts to fade and flicker. It's only after I disconnect the ipod to let it cool does the screen comes back. Is there a primary harddrive issue or is the motherboard messed up. I also replaced the battery already thinking the original one was dying. But that didn't seem to help any.

I've already re-formatted the iPod and restored it last night. Haven't tested it yet. Would replacing the harddrive fix this problem. I suspect the harddrive is constantly spinning when it should be resting between accesses.

Hi All Day 2 using new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6 Gen (HD touchscreen), 8GB RAM. The battery life seems to be about half the 10-14 hours advertised. Alarming. Wondering if it's a manufacture fault or pains reverting back to Windows OS/Lenovo from Apple Macbook Air 11 inch which has 1/3 to double battery life even though it's approaching 4 years old. Or does the battery need to 'warm up' so to speak, i.e. will get better. I keep screen low to medium brightness and sync basic folders. Feeling a bit cheated. Also the 8 GB Ram isn't hot stuff. Regretting not going for the 16 GB. It's a good product but not special. Any views from people? richard

Is there any reason why my battery life is so limited? Has anyone else had similar problems with this model of laptop?

Hi Techie_28,
Thanks for posting.
I apologize that your battery isn't lasting as long as you expected it to.  Batteries normally last between a year and 18 months under normal use.  Dell provides a 1 year battery warranty which is described below:
Batteries for portable systems and mobile devices are not covered under the same terms as the system warranty. Agents should see the procedure below for determining the warranty of the battery in question.

The standard warranty for a portable computer and/or mobile device FRU battery is 1-year from the date of initial shipment or 90 days from when the battery was last replaced.
Out of Warranty batteries that are replaced using the OWR process described below have a 1 year warranty from the date of service.
Accidental Damage (Complete Care) for portable batteries is covered for the period of the battery warranty if the customer has purchased an Accidental Damage (Complete Care) contract.
Dell Accidental Damage Service does not cover any damage to or defect in the battery that is cosmetic only or otherwise does not affect functionality. Dell is not obligated to repair reasonable wear and tear on the battery and other superficial items, such as scratches and dents that do not materially impair use of the battery.

Hope this helps.

A:Yoga 2 11 Running hot with short battery life

Hi David_EMG  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would help if you can generate a battery report ( ac charger unplugged).
How is the battery health if you hover the cursor on the battery icon below?

Battery is a consumable part and depletes its resources in time and heat is one of the factors that can affect battery life. Try running hardware diagnostics along side with this and this test for comparison.

Check the battery status LED indicator (page29) if it goes to the changes from amber blinking to solid white on full charge .  Calibration either using the energy manager via battery gauge reset can also help. Manually you can allow the battery to completely drain and wait for 1-2 hours and then charge it full.

Update us how things go.

Short Battery Life Sinks First Windows 8 Notebooks

Confusing dual-mode operating system, no Start button, counterintuitive swipe gestures? None of these things spells doom for Windows 8. What will kill Microsoft's newest operating system is the abysmal battery life of the systems on which it's supposed to perform the best.

For all of Windows 8's strengths, its one major weakness might be something no one saw coming; significantly worse battery life than the previous generation of PCs.

Leading up to the launch of Windows 8, we saw progressively longer endurance on the two most-portable categories of notebooks. As of September, the average ultraportable (a notebook with a screen size of 11 to 13 inches and weighing less than 4 pounds) lasted 6 hours and 52 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test (Web surfing via Wi-Fi, screen at 40% brightness). The average thin-and-light (12 to 14 inches, less than 6 pounds) was right behind, at 6 hours and 40 minutes.
However, when we started adding Windows 8 notebooks to the mix, those averages receded faster than Steve Ballmer?s hairline. By November, the ultraportable average dropped by half an hour, and the average thin-and-light decreased by 10 minutes. A number of challenges face OEMs and Microsoft when it comes to the adoption of Windows 8, from design to pricing. But solving all those issues will be moot until they fix the most basic requirement for any laptop ? good battery life. www.laptopmag.com

Hi All

I have problem that my C50t-A battery life is very short (less than two hours) and usually use laptop for reading, so how to check the actual battery life and if there is problem in my battery. The application of health monitor shows me the battery health is good, but this actually not correct since I need to charge my laptop each two hours or may be less and this very noising since sometimes not easy to get charging in any place. Is there any programm or application to check my laptop battery?

A:Toshiba Satellite C50t-A - battery life is very short

Download a program called HWMonitor from cpuid.com to view the wear level of the battery.

Lithium batteries only last about 3-4 years before needing replacement. They lose about 20%-30% capacity every year.

Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

The fan is on all the time, really loud and noisy, and the laptop is usually heating up too rapidly, and the battery life is less than 1 hour on power saving mode!! I don't know how it became this way, but I think that I once downloaded the windows 8 preview, installed it, but nothing happened, and I could not detect it on the control panel or in my hard-drive, it just disappeared, and my laptop has not been well eversince. I am not sure If I want to restore it or if I have a restoration point before the problem, but I have important software I do not want to lose. Is there any solution for that?

Thanks

A:laptop heating, fan loud, battery life short in windows 7

dalhoomist,
Welcome to SF. Have you ever opened the bottom up to change ram or your HDD? I would open it up and see how much that exposes the guts and especially the fan which I would take a very close look at and then clean it with air and a damp q-tip. Air flow is critical and these fans get dirty and even clumps of dust can break off and slow if not block the flow of air.

This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

I am trying to hook up a friend's home network. Presently his network is a desktop and a laptop cabled to a hub, which connects to his broadband. He wants to change the laptop to wirelessly connect to his network. He purchased a Linksys router and wireless laptop card. The new Linksys setup is so automatic that it's practically invisible. The desktop, cabled directly to the router, connected seamlessly. The Laptop, when cabled to the router seemed to set up easily, also. When the cabled network adapter is disabled the wireless adapter won't connect to the Internet. I have a similar setup at my house, but it is with older gear which asked me to enter every setting. Here is my problem... When I try to run 'ipconfig' on either computer, I get the DOS-looking window for about a half second, then it closes itself. It has text on it, but I can't read it. Has anyone experienced this? Is there something I need to fix? Is there some kind of switch I can set to hold it on the screen? I would really like to know what IPs have been assigned to each component, especially since the network is a not-work.
KermitD

A:Regarding ipconfig text window

I think I have seen that if I type IPCONFIG (or similar DOS-type commands) in on the Start > Run line directly.

What you want to do of course is run the DOS box first... Start > Run "CMD" (for Command); brings up good old fashioned DOS screen. Then on the DOS prompt type "IPCONFIG" (sans quotes each time). To eventually leave the DOS box click on the X to close it or type "EXIT" at a DOS prompt.

I have 2 computers connected through a router to the Internet, both running WindowsXP. One has been around for a while and works perfectly fine. The other, which I just purchased, is a used Dell desktop and it will not connect to anything at all. I cannot see the good computer in the workgroup...I cannot even see the Dell itself in the workgroup window. And, yes, I did assign both of them to the same workgroup.

On the good computer, I ran "ipconfig /all" in the command line and got this:

In my cmd, every time I try to use "ipconfig" (with out quotes), it says:

'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I have used ipconfig before but now it does not work. I know I could use Ctrl + Shift + Enter, but that requires administrator access

Where are you typing it?

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > right-click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Type ipconfig /all

Press Enter.

Hi, I'm wondering how to make a batch file so that I can launch the ipconfig /all command right off my desktop. I know how to get to the command prompt and running, but I want to just put a shortcut and/or write a batch file with just a click.

I can get the command prompt up. I open a new text file and type: C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe and then I save the text file to .bat and I click on it and my command prompt comes up. I can't seem to get ipconfig /all to come up at all. Thanks in advance!

A:[SOLVED] can't do ipconfig/ release

Hi -

The command has to be run from an elevated Admin command prompt -
START | type cmd.exe into the Start Search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe above under "Programs" | select "Run as Administrator"

The current path in the CMD screen should now read - c:\windows\system32

Now try your command -

Code:
ipconfig /release

I was dinking around with my desktop, not sure what I did.
Yesterday, if I wanted to know what my IP address was, I could use Start> Run> and type "ipconfig" into the little white box. Then the black box would pop up, with the IP address in it. All this is as normal, right?
Today, when I type ipconfig into the little white box, the black box appears for a split second, then dissapears! Where'd it go?
If anyone could tell me how to correct this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

A:Solved: Can't use Start>Run>ipconfig?

Hi Voodoo Thumb

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Key in: cmd
This will open the window where you can key in ipconfig and the window will remain open.

Or, in the Run box, key in: cmd /k ipconfig
This will open the window with ipconfig already entered.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

Can you teach me how to "read" an ipconfig /all? I know the basics, but that's about it.

Also, what is the difference between tcp/ip shared and not? And DHCP enabled or disabled?

EDIT: No, you don't have to worry about the security. Just make sure you have good antivirus installed and a firewall would also be a good idea.

ipconfig tells me that my IP is 10.0.0.1, while Google and other web services tell me its 174.124.##.###.

I can type 10.0.0.1 in a browser to access the router, but that can't be my real IP.

Command Prompt wont let me run "ipconfig /allcompartments /all". Below I pasted the results of both commands; ipconfig /all, and ipconfig /allcompartments /all.

Hey guys, this is another ipconfig media disconnected post. You won't believe me but i did go through at least 6 or 7 posts about this problem and i was not able to find a solution.

I'll try to do the best i can to tell you about my situation, but english is not my first language and computers science and programming are not my areas of expertise.

So, i live in a dorm. The internet on the rooms is by ethernet cable only. There is a little jack in the wall, in which i plug my cable, and then to the computer. I would simply plug the ethernet cable into my laptop (hp dv3, windows vista 64 bit) and i would be able to surf the web. This stopped working yesterday at 1700 hours. As of that moment, i have not been able to go on the internet.

As you're probably thinking right now, yes, i am able to connect to wireless networks. So, today i began looking for solutions and i will list them as clearly as i can, to try to answer future questions.

1) It is only my problem, i have a roomate and the internet on his comp is just fine. This brings me to the next point.

2) I did swap the cables and the jacks, nothing worked. However, i think my cable did not work on his (i will try that later as i dont recall actually trying it).

3) I did this: disable wireless network, reboot, try wired. That did not work either.

4) Then, i was told about dynamic ip and static ip, i don't know how to go about that so i did the ip config command, which showed me the media disconnected... Read more
