I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to activate several re-loaded machines for an air-gaped system (no access to the internet). When I open the Windows activation screen the option "Show me other ways to active" is grayed out. Furthermore, if I use the CLI command, SLUI
4, to select a phone number, the drop down menu under "Click the nearest location:" is grayed out as well.

I have verified the services: Telephony, Remote Access Connection Manager, Routing and Remote Access, and all their dependencies are set to auto and running. I have also attempted running SLUI 4 as administrator.
Any ideas?

A:Windows Activation: "Show me other ways to activate" grayed out, "Click the nearest location:" menu grayed out.

I am supposing you are attempting to use Volume Activation License such as KMS key, as I know f you don't have access to a KMS Server, this option won't work for these machines. I?d suggest call the Microsoft Volume License Service Center and explain your
situation to them.
If you are not using Volume Activation License, you might need to enter/change the Product Key by using slui 3.
For Activation and registration information of a Microsoft product, our resources would be limited and we suggest you contact with product Activation Center

Is there someone who has run accross this error and it's solution. I have been recording from TV and Burning shows or Movies to DVD on and Within the Windows Media Center Version 2005 OS. I had a few recoding previously made and kept in the system that burn fine, but all new recordings will not---It doesn't matter which station it is recorded from, I now always get this errors on the recently recorded shows.

The only known change is that I installed an upgraded HP 740i DVD+-RW , DL Drive with Lightscribe. Outside of Media Center, I use Roxio Media Creator Suite 8, but the make CD/dvd function in Media Center has its own program made by Sonic. I am suddenly unable to burn audio CD's or data CD's. I burned 6 last week with no problem.

I use Windows Media Player, and the CD-ROM drive came with the computer (E-Machines).

When I click "BURN" a box pops up with "please insert a blank disc." The disc is blank, and I have tried several different ones. When I look under "properties" of the drive, it shows all the space "used" (the circle is all blue) but used space is 0 bytes, and available space is 0 bytes.

I tried to drag and drop, also, to make a data disc, but that would not work, either - same message "please insert a blank disc"
I've tried playing other CD's in the drive, and they all work fine.

It just won't recognize blank discs
Please Help!

What is the reason for some file names in a folder appearing faint or "grayed out"? This is happening in a friend's Windows XP machine, in which there are a number of GID file names that have the faint, gray appearance.

I've read that these GID files have something to do with "global indexing" and Help status, so they appear to be needed in some way. If they gray appearance is evidence of a problem, can they just be deleted without crippling program operation?

Will appreciate any help you can provide.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

was burning data on a DVD-R
i used the "like flash disc" method formatting it
then went on deleting, moving & renaming image folders..
i think that was wrong to do..
when i started the burn process it stopped responding after several minutes..
i had to force restart the machine to eject disc..
then i discovered a specific folder i put in the image is very big in size..
checked it and found the windows has created system files and folders in it
AppData, Temp, Microsoft, ..etc
it couldnt be deleted the easy way
used Unlocker, could just delete few folders then the machine stops responding..
and this repeated useless several times..
used the Safe Mode With Command: RD /S.. it deleted the folder..
but after restart windows normally the folder is still there and keeps creating system stuff..
some programs started using this location to run, like Chrome..
i discovered i lost all my history and cookies and had to reinstall it and its still sticking to the Burn Folder's infected folder..
the folder is growing fast.. i have to to wipe it using command and reinstall Chrome again and again..
i need to burn discs too..

i apologize for being too long

Hi all,
In Win7 Home Premium, is there any way to remove or hide the "Burn" option from the default Windows Explorer menu configuration? I have the Nero suite installed, so I don't really need the inbuilt Windows capability to burn discs, and I'm forever hitting that option when I mean to create a new folder. It's a pain, because Windows doesn't readily forget it, and keeps nagging me that I have files queued to be burnt to disc when I want to do other things.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I'm coming across a strange issue with Nero Burning ROM 11 (a CD/DVD burner program). I also posted in the Nero forum but thought I would try here too, as the problem seems to relate specifically to Windows 7.

I recently burned a Blu-ray data disc (UDF format) containing 11 folders. The burn completed successfully but with warnings. Something about the file descriptors not matching (I don't remember the exact message). When I go to open the disc in explorer (Windows 7), two of the folders are named correctly but the rest say "Temporary Burn Folder" (which is odd as I didn't think two folders could have the same name, much less nine).

The weird thing is, this only happens in Windows 7. When I open the disc in Windows XP (in my case through a virtual machine in VMWare Workstation), all the folder names are as they should be. Also, if I use the command prompt in Windows 7 and do a dir on my Blu-ray directory, all the folder names are correct. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Nero, Windows 7, or maybe my Blu-ray burner (this is the first time I've burned a data Blu-ray in Windows). Anyone have any ideas?

Hello friends;
i really really need your help in this one.. i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system.
when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out!
Here is a picture;
Now i know this;
if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) .

any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?
Thanks !

A:Realtek HD audio 5.1 speaker "rear pair" is grayed out

I believe this is because in the Realtek HD audio world, the surround speakers are sides, not rears. In a 5.1 config, tick the sides checkbox and plug your black audio cable (rears) into the grey input.

As an alternative to plugging black jack to grey input, you can right click the black input in the "Analog back panel" graphic and "Retask" that input to sides.

Hi All,

I want to format my external hard drive into two partitions so that I can use one of them as a recovery drive for my Windows PC and the other one for my personal data. I am using Windows 8.1.

It is a 1TB WD Elements hard drive currently formatted into one exFAT partition. It is about half full. I don't want to delete the partition and then create two new ones because I have nowhere to backup the files currently on the drive. So I want to shrink the existing partition and then create a new smaller partition but for some reason I can't do that in Windows Disk Management. When I right-click on the drive (E:) The option "shrink drive..." is grayed (as shown in the screenshot).
Does anybody know why this could be? When I right-click on my Windows (C:) drive this option is not grayed out. (I tried doing the same thing using Partition Wizard but I had the same problem - the "split" option, along with a whole lot of others, is grayed out).

Also, another strange thing which might help you to understand. In Partition Wizard, when I right-click on my external hard drive (E:) and click properties it shows that the hard drive is full (first screenshot) even though Windows File Explorer shows that it still has about 500GB of free space (second screenshot)
Why does Partition Wizard (and obviously Windows Disk Management as well) think that the disk is full?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

A:"Shrink Volume" Grayed Out - External Hard Drive

You cannot shrink a FAT disk. Shrinking is only supported with NTFS. You have no choice but to backup your data and re-initialize it as NTFS.

Condensed version of a long story:

I was infected with "Malware Defense", which was a beast to remove.
Finally got clean full system scans from, Panda, Trend, Malwarebytes, and SpyBot & Destroy...

Everything seemed back to normal and working fine, for several days.

Then my system grew increasingly slow, and randomly would hang.

I downloaded updates for Malwarebytes and did a full scan, it was clean.
Like a day later, SpyBot popped up saying something, so I did a scan with it, and it came back saying I was infected with "aureate/radiant", I clicked on fix it, and it said that some of the files were in use and could not be delete can SBD run on next start? Congratulations!: No immediate threats were found. (Status)
And each time I tried to run the scan again it would give me the same results.
I search for the individual files in my system and registry, didn't find anything...

During the system hangs I'd check "system process explorer", and the process consuming most of the resources was ntkmlpa.exe...

On a Windows 7 64 bit system, I've got a compact flash card set up like this:
compact flash card > usb compact flash card reader > USB hub > usb port

Previously, windows allowed me to safely remove both the
card and reader. I unplugged and replugged some connections
a while ago and since then the safely remove list only allows me to
remove the card reader, the card is grayed out. (I replugged the
devices into the same connectors.)

I wanted to check the card's properties to see if its policy was
"quickly remove" or "better performance" but the card is not
in "devices and printer" and it's listed under "Portable Devices"
in Device Manager, which doesn't have a policy tab.

How can I get the device ungray in the "safely remove hardware"
list? And, if I can't do I have to safely remove the reader each
time I want to change cards? That probably requires a reboot
and waiting for it to be installed again and I'd rather be able
to safely remove only the card.

Thanks for any help.

you need to choose "import from a file".

Firstly though you need to export from Firefox (desktop is the most convenient place to store the default "bookmarks.html").

Then import into IE when prompted to choose location. Be sure to choose IE's favorites as destination.
P.S. for some reason your IE's import/export wizard is disabled, hence the greyed out option. IE is not recognizing another browser (FF) being installed.

On a 4-year old laptop running Windows 7, I've been burning, in Windows Explorer, Verbatim brand DVD-DL discs rated at 8x, on an external USB Panasonic UJ-220 blu-ray burner that can burn DVD-DL at 2.4x, at 2.4x (the only burn speed choice that Windows Explorer offers), with no problem.

Now I'm trying to do the same, with the same external USB burner and with discs from the same cake, on a 1-year old desktop, also running Windows 7. Both the laptop and the desktop are running 64-bit Windows 7.

On the desktop, I get this error:

There was a problem burning this disc

The write speed for the recordable disc is either too fast or too slow for your CD or DVD burner. Insert a recordable disc that has a different write speed, adn then try again.

Then it offers choices to try with a different disc, save the temp files for later, etc.

I've tried with 3 discs, and got the same error with all of them.

The UJ-220 has two USB plugs; one for data & power, and one for just additional power. I thought maybe the burner wasn't getting enough power from the cable that's just for power. So I plugged that cable into the laptop, leaving the data cable in the desktop. Same problem.

Burning a disc rated at 8x at 2.4x, in a burner rated at 2.4x, should be no problem, but even if it was, why does it work fine with the laptop?

A:Error burning DVD with Windows Explorer: "disc to fast or too slow"

Hi GregL,

Normally I would say that is because of media incompatibility with the burner (some brands just don't get on with each other), but reading through your post this can't be the problem as you're using the same discs and burner on both machines. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that the drive is being picked up by your laptop as USB 2.0 but only USB 1.1 by your desktop.

Files take longer to load, the HDD is never quiet. Its even starting to click! Which is a bad sign. What the hell is vsta doing? I want all this intense harddisc activity to stop. Whats causing it and how can I stop it?

I've been having this rather annoying problem for nearly 2 months now and have tried several things to fix it, as mentioned in some simmilar old posts on here.
Basically my CD drive suddenly decided not to recognise blank lists so I can't write files to CD. I tend to use itunes but it doesn't work in WMP either.
The message displayed is "Please insert a blank disc"
I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-NS20M / Windows Vista Home Premium
The disc drive is MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ880AS

So far I have tried uninstalling and rebooting, checking for updates, doing a system restore to before the problem started... none of this has worked and it's driving me mad!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am hoping to completely wipe my system, so that it runs faster and has less clutter. Frankly, I enjoy the process and love the peace of mind that comes with having a completely new and clean system. My system is a DIY (built by myself). I have a key for Windows 7 Enterprise (that I validate through my university). I do not have a Windows ENterprise CD.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to achieve my goals here?
Can I make my own reinstintall CD from my current system? I think probably not.
Is there any way I can buy a Windows 7 enterprise disc (without a key)? Any place online. Ebay was sellling one a few weeks back but now it's gone.
Thanks very much for the input. I might need to spend $90 on a Windows 7 Home edition (I dont care which version of windows I get).

A:Want to reinstall Windows (or "wipe" my system) no disc, have key

You can download the iso file from here, but I don`t think you can activate it.

Try Windows 7 Enterprise | TechNet Evaluation Center

Why can`t the University help you ?

Enterprise is designed to be used in a work computer provided by an employer.

Hi, new user here.

Well, bought an used notebook with some car diagnostics software on, and a hardware USB-interface.
The laptop though, runs a Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, which i believe is a "copy". The machine got a OEM Windows 7 x64 Pro sticker underneath.
Did try the downgrade trick, mentioned allover this forum, but for some reason it does not work.
I had to uninstall SP1, as I didn't have a SP1 DVD ready on hand.

When running the compabilityscan, I get the following error; (roughly translated from Danish)

"There is not sufficient discspace in partition (G . There must be at least 15 MB free space."

Note: Partition G: is a partition on 100 MB created by the Windows installation. Theres ~200 gig free on my SSD, which also held the G:, when the installation is started.

Any clues what to do from here?

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm trying to install Windows Vista Business using a burned .iso file on a DVD and it's now saying: "Please insert Windows installation disk 1.", but there's already a DVD in the computer? I don't have an OS on my computer right now if that helps with getting an answer.

I saw a similar thread on these forums about this but it as it was solved the mods closed it. Anyway, my problem is I cleaned out my system 2 wks ago and must have removed something I should have bec now whenever I have my iPod plugged in and I move a file from it, etc a window pops up saying "no disc in drive E, etc.." with 3 buttons (cancel, try again, continue). I push any or all buttons or right click and close to get rid of it. It's becoming very annoying. I read on the net it is sometimes associated with Norton or iTunes and bec I don't have Norton it must be iTunes related.

I did a scan with HijackThis and I think it's just a matter of clicking on the proper file and "fix checking" but I don't want to make it worse so I'm a little hesitant. I've attached the logfile hoping someone can actually make sense of it. Has anyone had a similar problem? Sometimes when I turn off my PC I also get an error message saying "no disc exception 000000013...." are they related? Anyway the logfile is attached below. Thanks in advance.

That's not the way HijackThis works. It's not simply a matter of clicking a file and checking "Fix". "Fix" actually deletes the entry. It doesn't fix anything. You should avoid "Fixing" anything in HijackThis or you may end up with serious problems. Only do so when advised by an expert.

I have a client that I have made a local admin of his computer and have auto updates set to auto download and install. He continues to get the message that updates are almost complete the computer requires but when the dialog box opens restart now is grayed out and they can only select restart later. When they go to start, shutdown, restart manually the message still comes up. They are in a workgroup and running XP SP 3 there is no WSUS server, domain, or GP settings that would override the behavior.

Is it normal that this button is grayed out for every folder I try to share (even if I own it)?

Allow, Admins, Full contr., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, SYSTEM, Full contr., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, Auth Users, Modify, D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, Users, Read & exec., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
I always need to click on the "Advanced sharing..." button.

I have a bad feeling I might have problems with permissions cause I can only access shares when I set the share's permissions to "Full control" for "Everyone" (and delete all the others).

TIA for your input!

Good Day All !!!

I have a few desktop icons (shortcuts) I'd like to change. I used to be able to right click on the icon, hit "Propertys", then "Change Icon". On some on my shortcuts that "Change Icon" box is grayed out. I've researched for hours and can't figure it out. I'm running Windows 7 as an administrator. Under the security tab all users (System, Steve, and Administrators have "Full Control". One of the icons is the Windows Explorer icon that is pinned to the task bar. The other icons are programs I installed.

Any ideas ???? Thanks !!!

A:"Change Icon" Box Grayed Out

Hello Smeyers,

You might see if creating new shortcuts directly from the .exe files of these programs may allow you to change the icons of the new shortcuts. I've noticed some program like Office do not let you change the shortcut icons of the ones it created by default during the program's installation.

Hope this helps,

I'm in the process of trying to install Win XP Pro on my new Dell M1330 notebook. The install went fine, but now I am having problems formatting unallocated space on my 200GB drive. There is one physical drive (Disk 0) listed under the "Disk Management" screen in the Computer Management admin tool. Next to this are 5 blocks: (1) unlabeled; (2) D: drive; (3) C: drive; (4) unallocated - shows black bar with gray stripes; (5) MEDIADIRECT - a separate partition used by some dell software.

When I right-click on the unallocated space to partition it, the "partition now" option is grayed out. This is a 115.13 GB space. How can I partition and use this space?

Hi guys, I ask you a lot of help because I'm in trouble up to my neck. I try to be as detailed as possible.
I have a Packard Bell with initially installed Windows Vista Home Premium (I don't know if 32-bit or 64-bit). Over time I updated it to later versions, and in fact before the problem I normally had Windows 10.

Brief introduction: as you know, telematic lessons have started in the world at home. So I installed Microsoft Teams and so far everything is ok. I noticed, however, immediately that the fan of my old PC with more than 10 years of intense work was starting to fuel quickly. While I was thinking about how to solve, the inevitable happened: during a lesson the PC freeze in the screens, and after waiting 5-10 minutes I turned it off by the button. By re-accessing it, this screen appeared, as the title says:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have the disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
