Slow Download Speeds on Desktop, Fast download Speeds on Laptop

Q: Slow Download Speeds on Desktop, Fast download Speeds on Laptop

I am having issues with my desktop. I am getting download speeds using speedtest.net of about 3mbps. On my laptop however I am getting speeds of 20-25mbps.

I have run a virus scan and malware scan and both came out as clean. What else could be causing my computer to suffer such slow download speeds?

Preferred Solution: Slow Download Speeds on Desktop, Fast download Speeds on Laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer has extremely slow download speeds, upload speeds are fine. Ping is always at ~10-20ms. (to Google) The problem has nothing to do with, my ISP, my router, my type of connection. I know this for a fact.

I've tried multiple network adapters. USB WiFi, integrated WiFi, connecting through another PC via ethernet, they all give the same result.

I'm guessing this is a problem with some software on the PC itself, as it seems to not be a hardware problem.

All other devices on the network have perfectly fine speeds, including Ethernet and WiFi connected devices.
I also cannot connect this PC to Ethernet, would take hours.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I am running a dsl Westell Wirespeed through Southwestern Bell Telephone in Houston, TX. My internet surfing speed is in upper range of speed, but when I try to download anything it is so slow it usually times out. I am using Win98 on an AMD 1.13gig Athlon. I tried to remove IE6.0 and was unable to do so. I would reinstall IE6.0, but to download the program is impossible at this slow speed. I hooked up a dialup in another machine and at 28.8, it runs rings around the download on this machine. Have also recently been unable to even download MSN game software.

I am experiencing very slow upload speeds (<1.5mbps). I have Xfinity blast tier service (150mb dl and 10mb ul). It will sometimes take 2-3 minutes or more to upload a pdf to dropbox.

I have tried speed tests from multiple sites and on multiple devices both wired and wireless. All have fine download speeds, but the uploads are as high as 1.7mbps and as low as 0.3mbps.

I have a Motorola 7550 gateway. However, this issue was still present when using a separate modem and router prior to it.

Hi there.

So today my friend and I, who live in the same country, was downloading this file. It was around 6GB, which is irrelevant, but yea. It was from the same site, we have the same internet, yet he was downloading with 2.6MB/s while I was downloading with 1.338MB/s and it stayed like that for the remaining 40 minutes. Didn't even move at one point, while his went from 2.1 to 2.6 over 10 minutes.
Worth noting, we use the same ISP, he only have 25/2 while I have 50/5, and I could easily download 2 files with the exact same speed (1.338MB/s each), but not 1 with 2.6MB/s or more. There's also a client downloader, for this game, where he again got 2.6+ whereas mine always stayed at an amazing 80-180kb/s. I tried disabling anti virus, firewall, Malwarebytes, nothing changed it. I know you're thinking it's just the seeds or site that is limited to an x number of download speed, but it really can't be the case in this. It happens with every site I try. It's always at 1.3xMB/s and never moves regardless of how good it is.
I honestly don't remember, but I don't think this happens when it's a .torrent file, using programs like uTorrent with good p2p. It happens in all browsers, and apparently game client downloaders.
I can download 5 different downloads at 1.3xMB/s using all of my available internet, but when it comes to a single file, it for some reason, is impossible.

A lot of rambling in this thread, I apologize.
I'm not complaining about the download speed, but it ju... Read more

A:Fast connection to router but slow download speeds?

Your signal strength is so low that you should not expect very good network speed from this connection. I'd also say that this connection will not be very stable with only one bar.

That is definitely not a fast connection to the router. How it works is the weaker the signal strength the slower the connection is going to be.

You might want to considering installing a wireless N access point in a location closer to where you need to connect from.

Here is what's possible using the 802.11n Only setting, 5 bar signal strength with WPA2 security and AES encryption, which are both made to work at wireless N speeds.

Hi there, i was wondering if you could help me this problem i've been having for the past 3 days now. I recently downgraded from Vista to XP, and ever since then i've had download speeds of 5kb/s or less. Before now, i couldn't get onto anywebsites because it would time out, things like www.yahoo.com would take about 5 minutes to open properly. I did notice that when i was asked which partition to install XP on there was 2 sub partitions on the C drive for some reason. Anyway long story short, i managed to fix it by using the format option from booting the pc with the vista installation disk, then put xp in etc.
So, browsing speeds are normal for me, but i can't get on my online games because it just times out due to the slow download speeds, and anything large in size takes extremely long to download even with internet download manager, I've been waiting 10+ minutes for windows live messenger to finish downloading and installing and it still hasn't done so.
If you could have a look at my hijack this log and let me know what you see wrong it'd be much appreciated thanks.
Not sure if this is to do with a virus, ran AVG, Malawarebytes etc and they haven't picked anything up.

Ok so I bought a new laptop the other day from Dell, and everything has been fine except the download speed is far slower than it should be. I'd rather not get Dell involved for now as it's usually a huge hassle dealing with customer support and gets nowhere.

It's running Windows Vista 64, Intel 5100 AGN NIC with latest driver, can post other specs if needed. Brand new install of everything. I could tell it was slow just doing typical internet stuff and trying to download game patches and such, so I tried a few speed tests to try to confirm. Download speeds were anywhere from 500kb to max of 1.5MB, upload speed around the same. It didn't matter if it was wireless, through wire, through router or through modem - the speeds were the same.

*Using the same modem, router, line, even IP, my desktop (running XP) hits 6.5MB downloads no problem.* I searched around and some people with similar issues said they uninstalled McAfee and it fixed it, I tried this and no luck. I've also tried with and without TCP autotuning, no difference.

After that I'm stumped, any help appreciated thanks.

I just purchased a new Laptop (Acer Aspire F 15 F5-571T-569T Signature Edition Laptop) from the Microsoft Store. Everything is fine except the Internet is very slow. Pages loading slowly. Took me like 20 minutes to download Chrome.

On Speedtest I get an verage of 5 Mbps download and 40 Mbps on upload. The upload speed is normal for my tablet and old laptop. The upload speed was at around 1.5 Mbps until I rebooted my router and right after I did that, the next test I did, the upload speed was normal.

I tried rebooting the router a few times after to see if the download speed would be normal, but it remains at around 5 Mbps.

I checked on Device Manager and my network adapter is - Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapter

I have Verizon Fios in Brooklyn and my router is an Actiontech M1424WR

Windows says the drivers for the network adapter is up to date.

On my Dell Venue tablet I currently get about 52 Mbps Up and 40 Mbps Down.

When I check my WiFi status in the Control Panel it says Speed: 65 Mbps.

Something is throttling my download speeds, but I have no idea what to do. I am not too savvy w/ this sort of thing. It seems like it should be an easy fix, but I'm lost and could use some help.

Hello. I have windows 7 x86

i have comcast provider. My internet is working fine. I can browse normal sites.
I am suppposed to have 1.5 Mbs per seconds. And when i did a speed test at speedtest.net. it was approximately 1.5 Mbs.

I used to get these speeds as well, with a single file. Unfortunately about 4 days ago it took a drastic downturn. and now will NEVER go above 200 kb/s.

I have a netgear wirless router. I have done all the usual unplugg reset type things.

I was wondering if there was any idea of why this is happening or if you know of common solutions. Thank you guys very much!

A:Slow download speeds

This might sound really stupid I just want to check you know the difference:

A 1.5 MB broadband connection gives download speed max 200 kBps, a 10 MB line has download speed max 1.2 Mbps. If speedtest shows the speed as 1.5 MBps, and it's actually the speed you pay for, your download speed should be around 200 kBps. If so then you are downloading about as fast as possible using your line.

Hi there.
I recently bought a new Belkin router and can connect to it fine. Everything seems to be working and internet browsing is as fast as it should be (on 54Mbps).

However, since i bought the new router, downloading does not seem to work. This includes downloading through Azureus, Bittorrent and even when just downloading from a webpage (i.e. download.com).

I've searched everywhere for an answer to this but there doesn't seem to be any information on the problem.

Hi guys, this is my 2nd thread on Techguy. I'm posting again despite my previous thread in which I got no replies whatsoever.
So yeah..
My download speeds are very slow, the highest ever reached is around ~80 kb/s. Like it doesn't matter what server, or what download, its always under 80kb/s. A year ago, the download speeds were about 300kb/s highest. I have High Speed Connection with Telus Communications (http://telus.ca/). I had a problem with my modem and I had to return it to Telus to be fixed and when I got a new modem, I noticed the problem. It may have happened on my old modem, but I noticed it first on the new one. I phoned Telus and they ran a few tests and said everything was fine. But I don't think so. Are there any solutions?
Please, help me.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 5 (If you need me to be more specific I can be but it doesnt have much to do with the problem). Windows XP. Now, in my area we have a cable company that gives out a lot of internet so I have the same connection as many of my family and friends. My problem is that my computer downloads files from the internet much slower than friends and family that have the exact same internet connection and worse computers.
For an example I've seen friends download songs at 150 kb/s and with only one song downloading on mine im lucky if i max at 40 kb/s. And it's not just the downloader, wmv files download slower on my computer also. I don't know if there's a setting somewhere I need to change or what.
Not sure if this is the problem but McAfee security Firewall is 7.1.113. Maybe that's what is slowing it down? Modem reads SB 4100 Cable Modem, could it be I need to mesh the Modem with my computer?

Hello TSG,

I hope you can help.
Firstly, I have searched the forums for help regarding my issue, and tried a few things.

Nothing has worked so far.

My problem is this, I have just switched from Cable Broadband, trhugh fibre optics, to ADSL.

And I have to say, I wish I never did.

I went for the top package available to me, unlimited downloads, with a connection speed of upto 8Mb.

I know from running tests I can get upto 6.5Mb in my area.

So, had a professional from BT pop round and install my new Bt Home Hub wireless router and setup the web on both my laptop and desk top.

The laptop has a wireless built in, from Intel. The engineer installed a wireless USB adapter for my desktop, the BT Voyager 1055 Turbo 11g.

He installed Macfee secutiry on both laptop and desk top.

When arriving home after the install I tested my download speeds through;

And supprisingly my laptop was fine, getting speeds of around 6.5mbs

However, my desktop was only achieving speeds of 0.5mbs!

So thinking it could be the fact my desktop was stuck in the corner of my spare room, and perhaps not picking up a great signal, I moved the whole unit about 2 metetrs from the Wireless Hub.

Still only getting around 1.4Mbs.

Then I removed Macfee from my PC, firslty it had slowed my system down anyway, and secondly my system had crashed twice. Which was wierd, as it hasnt crashed in three years before the install.

Now my speeds are much better, getting speeds of 7Mbs !

I notice alot more universities are throttling certain ports. It can be that they have throttled the ports that WoW requires...

Hey guys,

First time posting so hopefully i can get this solved.

Decided to upgrade to fibre broadband and all was well, my pc's were getting 70down and 20 up which was a massive improvement over my DSL connection. Recently we noticed it went down to 20 down. So after talking to the ISP and 2 months later an engineer replaced the copper cable outside the house. After running some tests i was still getting 20 down but now ive found the error is also with my pc.

Currently i have 2 pc's connected to the router (wired) both running windows 10. The pc connected closest to the router is able to get 70 down and is the oldest of the 2 pc's

My gaming machine is about 8 meters away and is only able to get 20 down. I did used to get 70 as well so somewhere i have changed a setting or something has changed and im just not sure. Ive done the usual of changing the port on the router and buying 2 different length cat5 cables and still the same. So that rules out the cables (unless all 3 were dodgy)

Ive updated the Ethernet drivers (killer e2200) and that didnt change it. Looking in the connections side of settings and im connected at 1gbps and im set to AUTO for speed / duplex

Ive also tried resetting the network via windows.

I have a home built 6 core processor, 32 gb ram Running Windows 10.

A few weeks ago, I noticed a dramatic reduction in download speed. I used to be able to watch a YouTube video without the buffer kicking in. What used to take a minute to download now takes several dozen minutes. When I check my download/upload speeds at the AT&T site, they are 7.6 and 1.4 respectively ~ which is what I expected.

I ensured my virus (Avast!) and malware (Malwarebytes) apps were updated and did deep scans but turned up nothing. I checked to see if somebody is syphoning my bandwidth, and that came up clean as well. My girlfriends cheap HP laptop does not seem to be having these issues.

I had been using Google Chrome for years with no problems. When I started having issues, I moved over to Microsoft edge. Speed improved somewhat, but still not where it used to be.

What am I missing?

I'm using the exact same router that I used on the older computer, but my downloads are coming in at about half what they used to.
A speedtest.net scan told me that I'm getting a 23.36 mb/s download speed and 1.61 mb/s upload speed, which seems to be capable of giving me much better speeds than I have currently.
Any help at all would be wonderful.

I had the same thing going on with Vista I was getting 15.00 to 20.00 mb/s
With Window 7 I was getting 6.00 to 7.50 mb/s. So I reset my router & updated firmware now i'am back to the old speed 15.00 to 20.00 mb/s

I recently upgraded to Windows 8, but since my download speeds have been very low. I pay for 2mb, but I'm getting about 100-500 kb/s when I download things on, say, Steam. I've done speed tsts from speedtest.net and it says I'm getting over 2mb/s download speeds, but I'm not seeing this in my actual downloads. Any help is appreciated.

A:Download Speeds Slow with New Upgrade

How big is the file that you are downloading?

Mbps (Mega Bits per Second) is not the same as MB/s (Mega Bytes per Second)

Compared to other peoples download rates that is average for your connection. As a test, does the same speed apply to other machines or devices on the network?

Does anyone have any advice on improving my download speed? I have been trying to download some (admittedly large) 500MB video files from Fileserve. The first time I did, it managed it in under 3 hours, which I can deal with. Last night I tried to run a download, the speed was going up and down from 30 KB/s to mostly below 20 all the way to 0 (there's something incredibly discouraging about having 'Est time- Infinity'). I was still getting that speed at 3am (the previous download had been mid evening on another day), so I left it to download overninght, and found this morning it had reached 92% and had an error, so I lost the whole thing. I don't believe I was capped, as Virgin told me they don't do that unless you *really* hit them, and certainly not at 3am. Does anyone have any suggestions. I don't expect miracle speeds, but I've seen plenty of people on Broadband using Fileserve basic complaining because their speeds were 'only 100 KB/s'! Above 50 and not losing the download would suit me.

I'd really appreciate any advice. I'm running Windows 7.

I have a HP Compaq NC6000 laptop I use at work. I recently lost the hard drive and our IT department replaced it. Anyways, after they did this I am getting terribly slow download speeds. 860-1721 kbps down and 4000 up. I tried two other PCs here at work and the download speeds on them were over 6000--I connected my laptop to those connections to see if that might be the problem but I still get the slow speeds. Where should I start in fixing this?

"Where should I start in fixing this?"

By phone or email or in person with your IT department.

Ok where to start;

Recently I had to reinstall my operating system and ever since I have been getting very slow file transfer speeds of around 4kb/s. This is a nightmare, I use sites like beatport a lot to download music and it can take an hour to download 1 song. I have tried everything, clearing browser history, disabling autotuning level, turning on use SSL 2.0, turning off remote differential compression, uninstalling virus protection, turning off my firewall, reinstalling my NIC although I don't think this matters because I am using mobile boradband which has a built in modem etc. I can't think of anything else to do. I have been in touch with my ISP and everything is fine that end. Signal strength is very good so I don't understand it - please help!! Using vista home premium (really don't know why though). It must be some setting on vista that has changed since my reinstall of the OS, but I'm not very computer literate so if anyone can help, can you make it idiot proof for me ha

Hi guys.Problem: Recently noticed slower download speeds through web browser.Specs:Brand new computer: 64bit win7 i7 system. 2 months old.Browser: firefox Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv: Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.10Starting to see a problem I had with the previous system.Over a short period (3 months approx) I noticed the internet speeds in web browsing getting slower and slower. Whilst another computer on my network remained unaffected. So I did the usual. Winsock repairs, sdfix, virus scans, spyware scans. Turned off all addons on web browser, ran in safe modes. The works.Nothing could fix it.Got my new computer now. And I'm beginning to see a similar thing happening with this.I should be downloading around 150-160kbps. Seeing anywhere in between 20-80kbps. These recorded when no other download activity happening on the network.Tried using both IE and FF. Still, the other computer downloads awesomely.Ran a Hijack this scan and this is what it came up with. I have cable high speed internet running xp and recently my download speed has been extremely slow, transfer rate of 8 to 10 kbs! Surfing the web seems about normal. I have run speed tests and the results are usually about 145 Kb/s. Now does this sound like a computer issue or cable company problem.
According to them, all signals including modem appear fine. I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

A:Very slow download speeds with cable

are the speedtests with your isp or an outside source?

did you provide your own modem, or are you using one provided by the isp?
not all modems work with all isp's. low pricing isn't always the best way to go.

i use the one provided by my isp.
if it dies, they replace it.

I have AT&T DSL internet service and I'm using their 2-Wire 2701HG-B modem/router plus all my phones lines connected to a phone or Sat receiver have their filters installed on them. I'm subscribed to their 3Mbps plan but for quite awhile now I've noticed very slow internet speed.

Going to Speedtest.net - Results or Speed Test | Bandwidth | Broadband Internet Services I'm getting download readings as low as .23Kbps to 2.73Mbps (the latter very, very seldon) with an average of under 1.0Mbps.

AT&T did a ping or something and can tell I have noise on the line so they say it's probably either the router or one of the phone lines so this morning a tech dropped off a new router (same brand/model) but I can't see any improvement.

When the tech came the other day he hooked up his small modem from my phone line to his laptop and ran a speed test and it was consistently 2.5Mbps.

So are there any settings on my modem/router that could be slowing things down? Or do you think one of my phone lines is causing the problem?

A:Slow Download/Upload Speeds

you may want to check for background services using TCP connections.
Via Command prompt, type in: netstat -b

This will list the current connections your services are running. If you see public ip addresses in the list, you know you have a background service (hopefully) connecting to a web address.

usual connections are antivirus and update services like; adobe and windows updates.
