Which of these budget laptops is best?

Q: Which of these budget laptops is best?

Am trying to decide between Lenovo G500 15.6" Laptop 4GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive 59399508 - Best Buy

and HP Pavilion 17.3" Laptop 4GB Memory 750GB Hard Drive 17-e019dx - Best Buy.

This will be for Windows 7 multi-tasking on internet, Office, streaming video, Skype, no gaming. The RAM will be doubled to 8gb.

The HP 17" screen for about the same weight is fast with Corei3 4000 Haswell processor which compares favorably with the Lenovo's Core i5 3230. But a possible fatal flaw is the flimsy power port with elbow plug which falls out. Best Buy says they will replace the PC with another one since it isn't a known flaw for the model and extend the return period so I can compare them side-by-side.

Which do you think is best, and why?

Preferred Solution: Which of these budget laptops is best?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Greg .. I have two Lenovos one a Desktop which i have had for for over two years the other one a Laptop which is in my System Specs ...Neither of them have given me any bother in all that time ... So i would say for reliability Lenovo wins hands down .. Apart from that side of things i think the Lenovos are better made .. I have had an HP Laptop in the past that was a number of years ago .. And it did preform well but i think their standards have dropped .. I see a lot of Laptops on here with problems HP rate as one of the highest a long with Sony .. Maybe that is because not many people have Lenovos .. Before i joined the Forums i had all the Bloatware that came with the Laptop and even with that it was still fast booting time was around 20/30 Seconds .. Thanks to you i done a Clean Install and now it is even better .. I think your best bet is to try them both for awhile and see how they compare ...

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Anyone Know whats up?

Thanks All!

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

I am eventually going to build a budget pc, but for now im trying to understand the parts as much as I can. For the cpu i wanted to know what the discription of the cpu
is, for Ex. "Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge 3.2GHz (3.6GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX80637i53470"
For the "3470", I wanted know what that means, like if its overclockable by that much. as well as the "Intel HD Graphics 2500", does that mean what type of graphics card it is compatable with are something else. If any one can help explain these things to me I would be very much greatful. those discriptions above are the only ones I need thank you.

Hi Everybody!

I need some help with my HP Compaq Presario SR5030NX Desktop PC. Lately I have noticed that it has been running low on memory and the performance has been slow. I have already upgraded my RAM to the max capacity (2GB /2 GB (max) ) and I have been running into problems when trying to do general things like surf the net, run WMP11, and some general multitasking. WMP will start skipping as I am running an application or browsing the internet or I will have slow loading times.

I am just wondering if there is anything I can do to improve its performance by not breaking the bank. I have thought about buying a non integrated graphics card to free up memory but I would also need a new PSU since I am working with stock. Could buying a new Mobo with more RAM expansion and a faster processor help or is there anything that you all could think of?

I use my PC for listening to music, surfing the internet, editing videos, and business applications.

Here are a few of my specs:

Desktop PC HP Compaq Presario SR5030NX
Processor Intel Pentium 4 641 / 3.2 GHz
Type & Installed Size L2 cache 2 MB
Chipset type Intel 945GC Express
RAM 2GB / 2 GB (max) PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive 160 GB Serial ATA-300 7200rpm
Graphics Intel GMA 950
OS Windows Vista Home Basic

So, this computer that I'm thinking about started out cheap, but has gotten a little more expensive over time. This is the first build I will be attempting, so this is pretty cool for me. After having multiple computers from places like Dell, I've decided to just build my own. This computer will be used for a range of things, including some gaming (stuff like Tomb Raider: Legend), Internet, Music/Video, School, and so on. Here is what I have so far (just looking at Newegg right now):

- Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply -- $59.99, $39.99 after rebate
- G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL6D-4GBNQ -- $47.99

Totaling: $467.93

I am using from my old computer:
- 120 GB Seagate SATA HDD
- 120 GB WD Caviar IDE HDD
- D-Link WDA-2320 PCI Wireless Card
- Some Hauppage TV tuner (I don't remember the model)

I have $700 to use for a PC setup. I originally was just going to customize a Dell from the Dell web site until I saw how severally overprice many components were and even way outdated! Therefore I want to build my own with parts through Newegg.

Here's what I have so far:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=12032652
I already have a Sata hard drive and THIS power supply so those 2 items can be excluded.

Can anyone tell me for sure the processor, motherboard, memory and case that I picked would all be compatible with each other?

I play on adding a video card down the road also. I remember reading but not sure if it was this specific motherboard, but one of them said it didn't have integrated video so I'm curious as to how you'd even install a video card with no video to install the drivers?

A:$700 Budget for a PC

$700 is a bit more than a budget computer...

You have an OS to install? At least until Windows7 comes out?

I would go with the following (order of your list)
1 - Case: Pretty much anything that is Rosewill = crap. Want a good basic black case with good airflow, try this:
Antec 300 $55 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 (IS your PSU 24pin and 4pin wires very long? Many of todays cases such as the 300 has the PSU on the bottom)

2 - Keyboard, $7 keyboards won't last long. A good cheap keyboard is an HP or Logitech for $15+ But none of them are as good as what was made 10-15years ago.

3 - Spend $40~50 more on a 24" Samsung. Acer tends to be washed out. Over at Costco, they sell the 24" Samsung for $200. $250 with HD-Tuner and HDMI input. (Add $50 from newegg) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001280

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc...=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1

4 - With AMD DDR2 boards, its generally best to go with DDR2-800mhz: RAM 4GB DDR2 800 - $47 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682014518 G.Skills are good, I use them.

5 - Mice : Check out Logitech... $5~10 mice tend to live for a month or so. Spend at least $15+ Good mice are $30~50.

6 - Motherboard The 790 doesn't have onboard graphics. Not sure what you're asking. If you buy a motherboard without on-board graphics and you don't add a video card, you DON'T get vide... Read more

A:$1,900 budget

Hi PYGMUS. I'm assuming your budget excludes the cost of a monitor and peripherals such as mouse, keyboard and speakers.

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz - $299.99
ASUS Rampage III Formula LGA 1366 Intel X58 - $299.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 - $139.99
Seasonic SS-850HT 850W Power Supply - $119.99
2x MSI N460GTX CYCLONE 1GD5/OC GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB - $439.98
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB - $74.99
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Black Steel ATX Full Tower - $139.99

Total - $1,514.92

With the remaining cash you could get yourself a good aftermarket CPU HSF and other components of your choice and requirement. You could look towards getting a Blu Ray Drive or SSD if you're interested.

2 gigs of RAM (Max on Mobo)

A:$200 budget what can I do.

Basically nothing. TF2 relies too much on the CPU for a graphics+power supply upgrade, which you could afford, to make any difference. A new motherboard, CPU, RAM and OS are out of your budget. ~80 $ for a decent motherboard, 110$ for a really good one, 50-80 for RAM, 80-130-150-190 for a CPU, 90-150 for an OS.

Im currently looking for a 144 hz monitor. Preferably 27 inch but obviously doesnt fit my budget (below $300). Therefore I have to go with the 24 inches (not bad either). I'm currently deciding between 3 monitors all in stock on amazon.
Amazon.com: BenQ XL Series XL2411Z 24-Inch LED Monitor: Computers & Accessories

Amazon.com: Philips 242G5DJEB 144hz, 1ms Extreme Performance 24-Inch Professional Gaming Monitor: Computers & Accessories

Amazon.com: AOC G2460PQU 144hz, 1ms Ultimate Performance 24-Inch Professional Gaming Monitor: Computers & Accessories

It's hard to decide which one since i have no experience in these monitors.

A:budget 144 hz monitor, help

Your output will always be 60hz, regardless of the refresh rate of a monitor. Majority of the times, the higher refresh rates, causes what is called "Screen Door effect", "Soap Opera" effect, and for some people, they have actually had severe Migraines. The suggested settings are to turn off all fancy features on the monitor/HDTV, or in the Control panel for your GPU when you calibrate it.

If you really want to know what people are using and want to see the rating. Check through the websites that are dedicated to gaming to look at their ratings. Along with Consumer Reports.

Just remember that your weakest link will always be your GPU & other Computer hardware. The really sad thing is that computer gaming is an ever evolving market. What may be best now. May be worse six months down the road.

Gaming for computers has always been one of those things, that unless you have a whole lot of money. You are never going to get close to the exact same high end hardware or setups that they are using for testing the game products on.

I just built a new gaming rig, and plan on redesignating my older machine as a home server.

The rig I just built contains:

Athlon II X3 440 (Rana)
MSI 870A-G54 Military Class mainboard
OCZ Fatality 550w psu
Zalman CNPS9900 NT cpu cooler
4GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 RAM
1x 800GB WD Caviar Green
and is all wrapped up in a CoolerMaster Cosmos S

The MSI Mainboard has an "EZ Overclocking" Console that allows me to underclock it for better cooling, or Overclock it up to 7% (with the preset settings). I can also manually overclock it, though while I would like to believe I am advanced enough to do this without damaging my system, I simply am not.

I am also aware that the 440 Rana may have an unlockable 4th core, though I have been unsuccessful in all my attempts to unlock it. I haven't tried changing voltages to the cores to try stabilizing the processor as of yet.

My question is- Has anyone built a system with this MB/CPU combination, and if so, is there anyone that has been successful in unlocking the 4th core? How did you do it? Would you be willing to post voltages, clock speeds, etc?

This is the first machine I have attempted to overclock, so if anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it.

(I didn't include a graphics card in the specs because I haven't purchased one yet. I'm currently using an old Nvidia 9600gso as a stand-in)

A:New budget gaming rig

There's a reason the 4th core is locked, it was tested and concluded defective after production. Don't cause yourself more problems than solutions.

Howdy!

Currently I'm running a Nvidia 6800 on a dell XPS 400 (Making my own next time) with 1 meg RAM and a Pentium D 3Ghz.

I know I need another 1G in RAM, and I was thinking of updating to a Nvidia 8600 card.

I'm on a rather limited budget, and could use some suggestions! Note none of my stuff is OC'd. I'm new to tweaking, don't know how, and cant afford to replace toasted parts just yet.

Do I need a new processor/mobo? (AKA: Scrap and salvage the unit I have into a new box?)
Is the 6800 crap, or am I not running it right?
Whats the consensus on the new 8600's?

Thanks in advance!

A:Upgrades on a budget...

Get a new system. You will need a new power supply to add the 8600 card.
You will get little benefit, and substantial risk, if you overclock that board.
The 6800 is not crap. But it is not a gamer video card either.

I am slowly teaching myself hardware, because I want to get a gaming computer for obviously gaming, but also video editing and software development. I figure whatever can handle games well, could also handle video editing fairly well.

I need your help in deciding what I should buy, as I am building my PC from scratch (least expensive way).

Hi, It's my first time to build a custom PC, and I would like one that I could play a lot of games like diablo 3, NBA 2K12, Dragon Age 2 and other high specs game. The problem is I don't know how to build a custom pc. I don't know what parts work with other parts and what parts doesn't synchronize with the other. Just seeing AMD FX something vs Intel i3 gets my mind baffled.

Really need some suggestions on what to get. Thanks in advance. Oh and also If it's compatible with a 2TB HDD. Thanks again!

Hello, I am wondering what a good CPU would be for an AM3 setup. I would like a fairly cheap one around £40-£60 but one that has potential to be unlocked and maybe overclocked as well. :S (not sure if that is a good idea with an unlocked CPU)

Any way this is the motherboard and RAM I will be buy with the CPU

Hi I'm new to the forum and I'd like some help please. I just bought a budget PC and would like to know where to look to upgrade it or if that was even possible.

Its an eMachines E4082 desktop running XP.

Intel Pentium D 820 (Each at 2.80ghz)
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 with available PCI Express slot (Pretty sure this is an onboard card)
512 MB DDR2 RAM

Basically what I would like to find out is if I can upgrade this machine and the best places to look. How do I find out if graphics cards will be compatible? Will any DDR2 RAM work with it? Really am a newbie with PC's when it comes to the hardware side but I would like to play a few older PC games on the machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey!

I was looking through CPUs and Motherboards (As that's all I need to buy at this time, don't worry about the RAM).

I found these (Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links yet):

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R
Intel Core2 Quad Q9400

I want to future-proof this set-up as best as possible FOR UNDER $450.

The Q9400 has SSE4.1, 6mb L2 cache, and 1333mhz fsb (45nm manufacturing process).
I assume SSE4.1 instructions are GOOD to have (should I forget about this)?

The thing is, I will never overclock anything, and I'm wondering how much extra am I paying for this "fairly capable" overclocking gigabyte board. Is there one that's comparable without the overclock-ready components?

Any responses are GREATLY appreciated!!!

A:PC Plans - Less than $450 budget

Futureproofing by my definition: I want to fit into the "reccomended" requirements for games over the next 3 years. Not 120FPS in crysis kind of goal.

"Don't worry about ram": I can get 2GB sticks of DDR2 RAM at any time from my local stores, so I don't need to discuss it. No offense taken .

I am doing this in increments though, trying to capitalize on what I have now, and the future development of products whilst getting the best value possible.

My plan: Core 2 Quad (yet to determine best value per dollar now, i thought the new instructions might be worth my while), Gigabyte motherboard (good quality; not DESIGNED solely for overclocking), 4GB kingston DDR2 probably 1066.
Still keeping my--harddrives, nvidia 7800gt (I know this is "inefficient"), 450W coolermaster PSU, case, sound blaster audigy 4...

I realize at some point I'll have to buy a new GPU, and a new PSU, I'm waiting until DirectX 11 to contemplate this, as I feel buying a DirectX 10 video card is a waste.

The i7 doesn't interest me, by the time I can afford it, octa-core will be released, I have to choose when to buy sometime... I have an athlon 64 right now.

The Question Remains

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R
Intel Core2 Quad Q9400

Good Combo? I will not be overclocking.

Thanks for your response Matthew.

Hi,

I'm after a new processor, on a budget. I've been told this - http://www.processorghz.co.uk/u/pp/...ghz-2mb-fsb800-btx-box/bx80547pg3000ft/274735 - will suit my system, but I'm wondering whether it's good enough? I mostly use the relevant PC for just general web browsing and listening to music..

Thanks!

Okay, so I'm interested in putting together a PC for gaming. So, I've asked around a couple of forums, and I seemed to be getting a lot of mixed messages. Some say I can put together something for around my budget (around $600 or so), others suggest otherwise. I don't know who to listen to, but I obviously hope the former is correct. And I think they are. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I mean, I'm fine not being able to play EVERY game, just being able to play SOME is fine with me.

Now, I should mention that I'm not completely comfortable building from scratch. I am however interesting in purchasing a BareBones kit, which if I understand correctly, includes most of the parts pre-installed, and working from there. I saw one containing the case, motherboard, power supply, processor, RAM, and hard drive. So I'd imagine I just need a graphics card, operating system, cooling fan, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and... I don't know, is there anything else I'd need?

Anyway, here's the link to the one I was looking at: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3017995&Sku=A455-2129 L

Now, again, I know very little about these things. I'm not especially tech saavy, but that seems decent, and it's only $250. It's got 512MB of RAM, what I think is a good processor (isn't it?), it supports PCI-e cards, so I figure if I got another 512MB of RAM, a good graphics card, X... Read more

Alrightly. I'm looking to do a massive reconstuct to my computer, While trying not to spend too much on building an entire new system. Namely, I plan I reusing my old Case, unless I can find cheaper, good one that I like. Newegg has some cheap ones but their cases are either very cheap but Crappy (you get what you pay for) or just out of my price range.

Eitherway, This may sound like a silly question but how can you tell if your Case can fit ATX or Micro ATX or maybe both? Also, can anyone suggest a very cheap Motherboard that can support HighEnd Gaming and a Radeon card?

Added to that, I need a Very Cheaper Processor but is at least higher then 1G and can fit the previous stated MotherBoard?
Anyway, if you haven't guessed, I don't really know what I'm talking about. I'm just tring to find the Cheapest Motherbaord/Processor that I could put into my current case but can also easily support my games (this computer can't).

A:Looking to Upgrade on a Budget.

Cheap doesn't equal high end gaming. I honestly don't know your definitions of both.

In tech forums, most would tend think $600 graphics card for high end gaming. Such as nForce 6800 GT.

I can't recommend any mobo or CPU that are cheapest and for high end gaming.

New Computer - Low Budget.

I have an acquaintence that is seeking to purchase a new computer. No monitor as he wants to purchase a monitor separately - a large one. He uses computer mostly for email and web searching. A little photo editing. No movies. No sophisticated programs.

He does not want a used or remanufactured computer.

My view is that the more RAM the better. There are less expensive computers but with less RAM.

He thinks that "Pentium" is better than AMD. I tried to explain that both manufacturers now make multiple chips with some being better than others with each brand.

Hi, i'll dive straight in and say that i think i need a whole new pc. i think something shorted on my mobo and now nothing works, it won't turn on. ?I think the PSU is ok because after it shutdown (it happened whilst it was on) the fans kept rinng, like they're meant to (Enermax PSU).

So i think i need a new mobo and cpu to go with it, and quite possibly a new graphics card. I'm not worrying about RAM too much because i think i'll probably get that from eBay.

Basically i'm asking for advice on what i could buy, but on a pretty tight budget. I was thinking possibly this cpu AMD Sempron 3000+ and this mobo DFI INFINITY NF4X Socket 754 but nothing's definate yet so i'm fairly flexible.

Thanks in advance

Oh, i found this on eBay too if it's any good

Well most the parts are used but who cares lol, they were bought off anandtech and hardforum.

Used- MSI K8NGM-V 24$
Used- Kingston 512MB DDR400 35$ *Shoulda waited for better deal
New- ARCTIC COOLING ALPINE64 15$
Used- My old emachine 300W PSU
Used- My old Xion XON-103 Case with 80CFM Fans
Used- Mobile Athlon64 3200+ Clawhammer (1MB L2) 22$ *Worth 80+ on ebay (seller has 2 more available)
Used- My Lite-On CD Burner from e-Machine
Used- My old Maxtor 200GB IDE Hard Drive (Need to RMA the damned thing)

So this is an example of a LOW budget system bought from used parts that I got a good deal on. It has rather low power comsumption because of mobile processor, it is also cool because the mobile processor has no IHS and would be a quiet system if I didnt put 80CFM fans in my case lol. I just need to RMA my hard drive for a new seagate.

Total Build Cost is 96$ Excluding Old Parts, including shipping.

When looking up budget MP3 players alot of lists have ones that are up in the 200$ range. how is this budget?

I am asking for some help because I have never owned an MP3 player except on devices that are other things like computers and phones. Okay here is what I need - A budget MP3 player that is nice and small (possibly something that just clips on and I can run out the door). I would like it to be rechargeable but thats not a deal breaker. I would like it to work just like flash memory and not need any extra drivers or any special software to be required to be loaded just to get some songs on it. It does have to be random song playing with the ability to fast forward/rewind.

I don't need any LCD. I don't need any search for a song function. I was almost thinking ipod shuffle would this be the best of a budget type? I really would like the cheapest possible. Can you access the ipod shuffle without loading up itunes and all that junk?

Now on top of this I do have a few 2GB SD cards already.... is there any one that is cheaper and does not come with memory but has a memory slot and may be cheaper?

first of, dont buy anyting from www.nt-micro.com . punks sent me wrong motherboard and 3 weeks later i'm still trying to get them to send me an RMA to return it. the one they sent me actually costs 115$ and i spent 220$ on the purchase. they are about to get a call from my lawyer. or my best friend pretending to be one!

anyhow i was trying to purchase the abit fatal1ty an8, not the SLI version. i had the money to spend and i figured i wouldnt need to upgrade it for a while.

the rest of the equipent i bought is as follows:
amd64 3000+ Rev E (Venice?)
2 gigs of Corsair XMS serries pc3200 cas 2 RAM
SATA 80 Gig HD
x700 ATI Radeon pro 256 mb pci-express
550W psu

anyhow i was wondering what motherboards everyone would recommend? and even if i should still with my abit an8 fatal1ty choice. not interested in any SLI boards either kind like ATI.

so if everyone could make some recommendations that'd be great and list a few reasons as why.

thanks in advance. :bounce:
