Unknown User not allowing we to control (copy/paste/save to folders) my files

Q: Unknown User not allowing we to control (copy/paste/save to folders) my files

I am attaching the DDS.txt log immediately below and below that the Highjackthis log file. My problem is that on my Win 7 (64 bit) machine I am unable to write to certain folders as the error message says - "You need permission to perform this action" when trying to COPY a file and I'm getting this error message - "You don't have permissions to save in this folder" at time as well. I have 4 accounts (Mine (admin)and 3 other for my sons. When right clicking on a folder, that I am having trouble writing/copying to, and selecting Properties>Security>Edit I see under the "Groups or user names:" there are 3 icons with questions marks next to them named "Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-1889859891-2727000539-980...). I am guessing that this seems a little odd to have unknown users in there coinciding with my current issue. Please help me to fix this.DDS (Ver_11-03-05.01) - NTFS_AMD64 Run by Chris at 14:40:34.92 on Preferred Solution: Unknown User not allowing we to control (copy/paste/save to folders) my files

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I was working on a computer running XP Home. I was trying to backup the documents/files to an external hard drive. The account I was logged into was an administrator account, but not THE administrator account. I tried to backup using the XP backup button through manage HD functions. The button for backup didn't even exist! Just blank space (perhaps that's a non-feature of Home that exists in Pro). Then I tried to copy/paste user docs folders. Some copied over just fine but three users accounts came up with the same error when I tried to paste them. Something like "cannot be created or replaced" along with a comment that it could be hardware or software problem. Also, I could not open the main user folders "access denied" even when logged on as that user. Yes, it seems the OS is fubar but that increases the need to do a backup so the HD can be nuked and reinstalled.

I tried connecting an external HD to the computer, booting up the computer using the primary HD. When I had problems with the OS, I removed the HD, changed it to slave and put it in another computer so I could go around the OS. Of course, I also connected the external HD. Still no joy. I also tried another external HD. Anything I can do from command line? Any ideas for me?

A:can't copy/paste folders & files

You could boot into safe mode and try copy/paste. Sometimes it will work from safe mode. Do you have the Windows Home cd? By default, Home doesn't install the back-up utility. You have to install it manually. 1.After inserting the CD-ROM, open Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" utility. In the "Add or Remove Programs" utility", click on the "Add New Programs" button, then click on the "CD or Floppy" button. 2. In the "Run Installation Program" dialog box that appears, navigate to the VALUEAD/MSFT/NTBACKUP folder on the CD-ROM and select the file NTBACKUP.MSI. Click on the "Finish" button. The Backup utility will be installed. Taken from http://tutorials.freeskills.com/how-to-bac...ome-edition.htm where there are furthur instructions/information concerning the back-up utility.

(you know what? BSOD just happened right before i click the submit button. -_-* luckily Chrome's restored back this page and i don't have to type everything again..)

BSOD started like a week ago. I've been trying to find ways of why it happened or what to do stuff, found one, tried it but to no avail.. and my pc really crashes a lot. I found this place a few days ago and read a few posts. Read the posting instructions for BSOD and i downloaded the SF Diagnostic Tool. I've attached the zip file.

That's one problem. The second problem is, on 1st November i found out that i could not rename any files that i wanted and i was using safe mode too. so i tried to play around with cut, copy, paste or delete and nothing happens. except for cut maybe, because it greyed out when i cut but it won't copy to anywhere else. even if i use drag and drop nothing happens. the same goes for copy-paste with keyboards. no errors warnings or messages, it just does nothing. my recycle bin seems so lonely nowadays..

oh, i've tried some of the methods suggested in some pages here by using unlocker or lockhunter but ... though it seems i can rename the files now by using lockhunter.

the result for SF Diagnostic Tool didn't go to my desktop either. it ended up in my other disk not OS.

Any kind of help is really really appreciated..

I would like to know how I can copy the full internet path to public folders and files in Windows 7.

In Windows XP, I was able to right click a folder or file, select copy path --> copy full internet path, and then paste the result into emails / documents / etc in order to direct work colleagues to files without having to send them as an attachment (using up my limited space in my outlook client).

I'm new to the forums, but would really appreciate any help you can provide!

Hiii everybody,
this is my first ever post in my first forum . That's a disclaimer to ask you guys to forgive me for having very little gray matter :-( .
I have Windows XP HOME SP2 on Intel Celeron 667 MHz and 192MB RAM. I know it doesn't sound like much so I'm always trying to read forums and tweak my settings. But this time, it ended up worse.
I used a program called autoruns.exe to adjust my startup programs so it'll start faster. I'm not sure what I turned off but now
1. It takes longer to start up,
2. I don't see any accounts (not even admin) in Control Panel - User accounts
3. I can access a directory and open files but I can't cut or copy and paste them into another folder.
4. In services.msc, most of the programs under Local with automatic setting don't start and cannot be started. I can't even see the programs under extended.
5. I have a home network but I can't access any of my other computers.
those are a few of laundry list of challenges with my computer (with me ?)
I'm even ready to format and reinstall XP but I need to copy some files before I do that.
I'm sorry for this long post but can you guys help me?

I don't know what on earth happens to my computer. First, this afternoon my computer suddenly slows down A LOT...like for example when I try to open the Windows Media Player it can't open and a message says it's due to low memory...when I was not using any other programs...and then everything else is slow...I can print articles though. Later I restart the computer but it stays the same. Then after some time strangely it gets back to normal by itself and I thought everything's over.
But then tonight when I turn on the computer the problem comes back again. Can't open some high-memory programs...even the Kerio firewall program disappears by itself! In addition, I find that all of a sudden I can't use the cut/copy/paste function on virtually any program that has that function...Word, Notepad, Windows. I was particularly frustrated as I was doing some assignment that becomes quite inconvenient without those functions. And the Edit/Save function on the Internet window was also blocked. ("Luckily" the Save function in Word was not blocked.) Could someone suggest what has happened? Thanks a lot.

I'll try to shorten this some...

I was having some problems that I determined were either caused by the hard drive, corrupted WinXP (Media Version), or my RAM. I ran MEM Test and it failed so I replaced the RAM with one 2G stick. That solved several issues. I still had an issue with switching users. I had the computer set up for 4 users with myself as the admin. My partition(is that what it's called)works just fine, but if I log into one of the other three it will not allow shutdown, restart, log off, or change user. It forces me to do a hard shutdown.

I decided that my OS may be corrupted so I took the opportunity to install a bigger faster HD and installed WinXP Pro. The problem did not go away. This doesn't make sense to me. What else could cause this?

I also have a new problem. Sometimes the copy and paste feature will just quit working. It seems to copy but then the Paste will not "light up" when I right click in the program I want to use. Could this be driver related?

A:Can't switch user can't copy and paste

It's possible that the group policy is keeping the regular users from doing things like log off, or shutdown. You may want to check what the settings are or put all those users into a single group and give them the proper permissions to do whatever you want.

File Explorer used to give me the option to either overwrite or skip existing files when copying a folder from one drive to another to replace a same name folder on the target drive.
Today, that option dialog disappeared and the copy-paste process resulted in the automatic creation of a new folder on the target drive named CopiedFolderName - Copy. I want the option to overwrite back!
FWIW, I'm on Win 10 Pro build 14965.
Any suggestions very much appreciated!

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

A:Move/copy-paste User Account data & docs to New User account same sys

Don't even try would be my recommendation.

Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.

Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.

If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.

Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.

Hi guys. this is my first post. I hope i'm posting this in the right place. I read all the notes before posting and i think i'm in the right place.

My wife's computer is in trouble. It's a dell laptop running windows xp.

I'll do my best to explain the problem.

When i start the computer i get two black screens on the desktop that say:

windows\system32\pump.exe and windows\system32\nvtdm

Then the desktop won't even load right. I can't even see the start buttom.

I see my icons but the screen is white and it says " Active Desktop Recovery" and it won't get out of there.

If i try to open explorer, it won't do it.

If i try to open a folder i get a message that looks like :

This page contains an unspecified potential security risk. Would you like
to continue?"

i press continue and i can browse the folders but can't copy paste the info. That prevents me from saving my files.

I called dell and i got all the restore cds so i could restore the computer and forget about this. But not being able to save the files is what's holding me.

Now, Through that explorer window i try to access the control panel. But when i try to open something ( for example : Add or Remove programs )

I get a small window saying:

Control Panel

The parameter is incorrect.

Have you tried using safemode to get what you need off of the hard drive? I would suggest safemode with networking and then get MBAM. Try running it in safemode, clear out what it finds and then run SUPERAntiSpyware. Keep in mind that SUPERAntiSpyware is limited in function in safemode but run these scans and get rid of what they find. After that reboot and go in to the regular Windows mode. Let us know what happens.

hi all,

Going wind7 soon. Want to copy folder lists and files/contents in window explorer and print them out, then compare with the folders etc on my external HD backup to make sure whats there and if I need to save anything else.

Is there a software that will do this, or way to copy/paste or something similar?

suppose there could be print screens or snip tools but that sounds like a lot of extra work.

A:copy/save & print folders lists?

Well, it's probably not the easiest way to do it, but you can go to any Windows Explorer list in Windows Explorer and do a Prt Sc (or in my case Fn key + Prt Sc). Then paste the image into WordPad and save it as a Word doc. Note though, that when you do this step, it appears to "save" in Rich Text Format, but when you try to open the Word doc, you may have to do a Save as, into RTF again.
Then, when you go back into Windows Explorer to access the file, strangely, the image you printed is saved as a folder, and within the folder is the Word doc in which the image is actually printed.

This problem has started happening about 2 weeks ago and I've given up on how to resolve this issue. Maybe you elites can tell me something I don't. As stated in the title; I cannot copy/cut a file and paste it at a different location. This also includes clicking and dragging a file to another location. Copying and pasting text WORDS still works, it's just files in general. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. I have done a virus scan with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 found 2 viruses and deleted them, problem is still there. I've done a scan with Spybot and Malwarebytes and deleted everything it has found and the problem still persists. I've done a cookie cleaner scan for the registry and fixed any problem it has found. By the way, all scans and deletions have been done in safe mode and rebooted after (except cookie cleaner). What I have found out is that in Safe Mode I am able to cut/copy then paste (or click and drag) normally. So I am still thinking it's either a virus that Kaspersky hasn't picked up or malware. If you have another idea on how to fix this annoyance, much will be appreciated.

I am at a loss here as I didn't know this was even possible without third party tools.

We have an issue I have been getting reports of that I didn't believe until I watched it happen in front me of.
We have a single domain with around 120 users. WHen one user will highlight some text on their computer and copy it either through edit -> copy or Ctril + C, another users clipboard on a completely separate machine will be overwritten by
the new copied text from another user.  When that user goes to paste text, it is what the other user copied on their computer.  All machines are running Windows 7 64bit with the latest updates installed. Any ideas? These are stock machines with no
third party clipboard sharing tools installed and it seems to happen at random.

Hy, need some help!

I've been trying to paste some files on my laptop, the "copy" button on right clicking a file is available, but the "paste" stays light shaded (grey) or not appearing, like if nothing was copied before it. And even Ctrl + C/ Ctrl + v is not working - no file on my windows can be pasted. This problem appears only while coping files (all kind of files) like mentioned in any sort of documents, while for example when i'm using MS Word or Google Chrome, copy/paste texts or URLs (whatever) works completely normal..
Any advice?

Any help and suggestions appreciated,

A:Copy & Paste Not Working for Files

hiya, try this.Log in as administrator on your computer and run CMD. You will find it in the Accessories folder. Run it and type sfc /scannow. Type the command and press enter. The command prompt will scan your computer and if prompted for windows disc then provide it. It will replace and repair any damaged or corrupted files.

I'm going to try and not make that mistake of not providing detailed information as to what happened. And I hope that someone out there can read through this challenge and be deemed THE ULTIMATE PROBLEM SOLVER by explaining exactly what happened and finding a practical solution to recovering my missing files. =)
Here's what happened broken down to the details:
0. Iím using Windows XP Professional
1. I placed my Micro SanDisk card from my cell phone into an adapter that can be read by my SanDisk card reader.
2. I attached my SanDisk card reader to my computer.
3. Copied [ctrl-c] Folders 1 & 2 from SanDisk and pasted [ctrl-v] to Folder A on my computer
4. Went to Folder 1 that I just pasted in Folder A and opened its files one by one
5. Verified all files were pasted properly
6. Deleted contents of Folder 1 of SanDisk (did not delete Folder 1, just contents). Confirmed "Yes" to deletion.
7. Went to Folder 2 of SanDisk and cut contents [ctrl-x]
8. Before pasting the contents to a Folder B on my computer, I changed my mind
9. Went back to Folder 2 of SanDisk and hit ctrl-z to undo cut
10. But hitting ctrl-z did not undo the cut, instead it removed Folders 1 & 2 (the folders I just pasted) from Folder A on my computer
11. Assuming I must not have hit ctrl-x to cut contents of Folder 2, I wondered why ctrl-z didn't undo my last function which was deleting files from Folder 1 of SanDisk.
12. I looked in Folder 1 of SanDisk and nothing was in the... Read more

I have an odd problem, my cut/copy/paste doesn't work correctly. When I try to overwrite a file using cut/copy/paste (diferent files with the same name in the same carpet, for example, a pdf document), the file won't overwrite itself, just made another document of itself with the tag "copy" in the name.

For example, a pdf document named "my work", try to overwrite this document with another document in another carpet with the same name, because the last document is more updated. So, I Cut/Paste but, what happened, I've got two documents, my firts original document named "my work" and another document named "my work -copy". I don't like that.

I would like to attempt to copy an untouched .NET 2.0 directory from a second PC here at home (identical install of Windows) but when I try there are files in use by the system and some say they can't be copied because they are protected system files.

Is there any way that I can accomplish this, both copying the .NET 2.0 directory from another PC, and copying it in its entirety to this PC? I assume this would have to be done outside of Windows but have no idea how to do this. Can anybody help me?

If You're Curious, This Is Why I'm Asking
A while ago I had a mishap and some system files in the Windows directory were deleted. I was able to restore everything, or so I thought, without any issues. Windows has been operating, without issue, for well over six months now, with the exception of Microsoft Framework .NET 2.0. Any app coded for .NET 2.0 crashes when I try to start it (no error code). The registry was not affected during that fiasco so I assume all .NET 2.0 registry entries are completely intact.

Note: I have extensively researched repairing, reinstalling, and replacing the .NET 2.0 installation. I have tried every official and unofficial tool that I could find. Unfortunately, all tools only affect .NET installations you installed to the system. Given that 2.0 is a part of Windows 7, I am unable to fix this using any normal means. If I wish to have a working .NET 2.0 I need to perform a clean install. This is the last possible thing I can try, as far ... Read more

A:How to copy and paste protected & in-use system files?

On my Win7 Ultimate and Win7 Home Premium I have .NET Framework 3.5.1 in Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off. It appears that Only 3.5.1 came with Win7.

In Programs and Features I have .NET Framework 4.5.1.

The downside of .NET Framework is that many programs are written to use only a specific version but they usually install that version if it is not present, there seldom seems to be any backward compatibility with a newer version.

My thought? Try to determine which program/s need it and reinstall that or look on the disc for it.

The main problem is not being able to copy+paste files. This just suddenly happened, and I'm not sure why. When I copy and paste, the copied file doesn't appear. It does sometimes show after a restart though (as if it was just hidden before). When I delete a file, the icon won't immediately disappear until I have refreshed the window or the desktop. I cannot move a file from it's folder into another folder or desktop either.

I should say that sometimes when I press ctrl+C and the 'V' and don't take my finger off of the ctrl button it will work, but only sometimes. If lift my finger off the ctrl button after pressing ctrl+C, and then then press ctrl+v it won't work. If I do this rapidly I eventually can get it to paste, but I have to do it several times.

One thing that works is that when I create a new user for my computer, everything works like it's supposed to, just not on my account.

I've tested this mostly on the desktop.
I've tried the "scannow" in the command line. It showed no problems.
I also ran msconfig from the command prompt and disabled the "startup" of everything. This worked at first, but after a few minutes the problem came back.
I also uninstalled my antivirus software, and doing that didn't help.
I did a system restore and it didn't do anything either.
I ran malware bytes and scanned with AVG Antivirus. It didn't help either.

Again creating a new user on my computer works, but I really need the account I have.

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

What happens when you open the folder up and try dragging and dropping the files where you want them?

I am using Windows XP and I recently had a problem with the user account causing problems when I renamed a folder. It would create a 0 byte file with no extension with the name of the previous folder name. Since this was only happening on the user account and not on the C drive, I rebuilt the administrator login and it was fine. The it happened again so I rebuilt the account again. ( I am considering a new hard drive but I don't know if that is the problem).

My other problem now is when I was cutting and copying and pasting files from one window to another very quickly. I had cut or copied some jpgs and noticed that they were left in the original folder still. I accidentally double clicked one and the jpg wouldn't display in the viewer. In file properties it said 0 bytes. Was it because I was going too fast? I am not sure if the file was left from a cut or a copy as I was going so fast. Or is my Windows corrupt? There was a thumbnail file I left in the folder but that should not cause a problem. I didn't rename the folder to a longer path. (I have had experience with that causing a file management problem before. That was not the problem here). There was no problem deleting the files and folders.

I am going to try to recreate the problem tomorrow when I have some free time to test it.

Was I going too fast? Or is my User account corrupt again? Do I need a new hard drive? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Zooks

I have been having the following problem off and on for some time:

When I try to copy/paste files and folders in windows XP explorer (or in the desktop or a program's dialog box), windows wants to re-install one of the programs I have already installed on my computer or that I installed once upon a time.

Currently this is happening with Roxio Easy media Creator 7, but in the past it has happened with many other programs, such as MS Office, Roxio and some other shareware programs.

This is how it happens:
I choose or drag and drop a file or group of files and folders to select and paste in another directory.
As soon as I initiate the operation, a dialog box pops up and says: "Installing (program name)", in this case, roxio easy media creator 7.
I click cancel and the alert box disappears. Also, the file copies.

In the past I was not so lucky: at times clicking on cancel did not work right away and I had to click it at least 3 times.

A couple of times there was no way to stop the process and I actually I had to fetch the CD installation disk and re-install the application.
Once it happened with a software demo I had tried months earlier, and by the time I had this problem I had trashed the demo file and the new demo available for download was a different version. I had to get the company to send me their old demo file, install it and then unistall it to make this annoyance disappear.

Is this a common occurrence? It seems to happen a lot with Roxio (and I ... Read more

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 with AVG 8.5 as my antivirus. A few weeks ago, I had some pop-ups, random audio ads with no visible windows, and a weird process showing up in Task Manager (svchasts.exe). Then AVG said my E-Mail Scanner wasn't running. Then it stopped updating, then it stopped scanning on schedule. I reported the problem to AVG; they sent me a repair installation that I was able to run and it found and healed a couple of viruses, but there was one that it found and couldn't get rid of: a trojan named Cryptor.

So I searched for help on Cryptor (that's how I found you guys ) and I got some info about MBAM and SUPERAntiSpyware. However I couldn't install or run either program (even after renaming). I was able to get a bit of a reprieve when I downloaded and ran the Sophos anti-rootkit; it got rid of the pop-ups and ads, but I was still running slow and some of my links were being intercepted by Google searches, i.e. if I opened nfl.com, I'd end up with a Google search for nfl.com.

Last weekend, I booted up and was unable to start IE or Firefox; said I couldn't connect to the server. Funny thing is that both my modem and router are showing a full connection to the web (I can still browse on my PS3).
