Error sounds, folder problems, right click problems etc.

Q: Error sounds, folder problems, right click problems etc.

Hi, I hope you can help me, i'm having a bit of a problem and i'm too scared to fiddle around trying to do things myself, I have the feeling i'd just mess it up

I've literally just started having problems with my computer. Sporadically I have lost the ability to right-click, sometimes whenever I do so on either a folder or on an application, no little menu comes up (i'm sounding like a right expert here!).

Also, when browsing through folders, the loading starts to become very slow and sometimes the blue menu at the side of the window isn't there at all. When I click on images to preview, or folders to open, sometimes nothing happens at all and the window just remains the same.

ALSO whilst trying to open some applications I get the error pop-up sound, but no error message box comes up to tell me what the error is. It just makes the noise, and I close the half-loaded application without it crashing (This happened with Photoshop, Adaware, Outlook Express, and once with Sonic RecordNow - all started loading, the error noise was heard, and the program left half loaded or missing parts) I've tried again and it seems it's all hit and miss like the other symptoms...sometimes i'll be able to right-click normally, sometimes i'll be able to browse files normally, sometimes programs will load, but the problem still (at random moments, it seems) arises again.

When Alt Ctrl Delete -ing, either nothing comes up and an error noise is heard, or the little window with the information does come up, but the desktop behind it flickers as if constantly reloading very fast.

The only error sound in which a box popped up, was one telling me "xvidcore.dll was not found". I clicked OK and everything reloaded as if windows explorer had crashed (the start bar, desktop etc).

I haven't done anything as of now, too scared to restart, or try and open any applications it might not like. I can't be exactly sure when I started to have problems, as I leave the computer on for days at a time sometimes (it's been running for about four days this time, about three days is normally the maximum) because I use BitTorrent a lot seeding and downloading.

Preferred Solution: Error sounds, folder problems, right click problems etc.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I recently installed XP Pro since I have had so many issues with system stability on 98SE. That and hardly anyone would respond to my requests for help, so I figure perhaps there are less and less people willing or able to help on such on old OS.

I was happy that so many of the problems plaguing my system disappeared after installing XP, but I am experiencing a very frustrating problem right now that I would greatly appreciate some help on. If I right click my desktop everything hangs up for 10 seconds or so after which my desktop crashes/refreshes and I do not get the right click menu to pop up.

If I open a folder and either right click on it or attempt to open the File drop down menu or attempt to "Make a New Folder" my system hangs up again and goes back to desktop. Sometimes an error message pops up from Dr. Watson saying asking if I want to send an error report. This is all very frustrating because I cannot make new folders or paste the contents of anything into a new folder. This problem DOES occur in safemode as well. I have not been able to create a folder in or out of safemode.

Just in case it helps, I'm posting a Hijack This log, although I have run virus scans and mulitple malware scans. Also posting dxdiag.

Thanks so much in advance for ANY help!!

Hi all,

I have a wierd issue - I removed my laptop from a domain, because I left the company. Before doing so I created a new local profile, logged on, logged off, logged in as admin, copied everything but ntuser.dat stuff to the new profile, then removed laptop from domain.

Now when I log on my new profile, anything I double click on desktop items (folders or my computer) I get an error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" - If I right click and hit open, it works great...

Also - programs seem to open fine, just problems with folders and my computer. I also get the same error from the start menu.

I have tried removing my account as administrator and then restarting and making it administrator again. Removed my permissions and readded them - cant think of what else to do.

Hi everyone

dont know how but all of a sudden my Outlook 2003 hangs up whenever i click the "send/recieve" button. It downloads my emails from the POP server at almost a byte/sec or lesser rate and eventually times itself out, giving me the following error:

Task 'pop6.physiology.wisc.edu - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)."

Further, the icon in the lower right corner of my Outlook 2003 window says that "Microsoft Office Outlook is synchronizing folders" and remains that way.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, Outlook, MS Office and also tried System restore (to various, system generated restore points). None of it has worked, further the system is not able to restore to any point. I should also mention that i have a Norton/Symantec firewall installed. i have tried disabling that but to no effect. Also, if any use, here is the log from HJT, i cant seem to find anything suspicious:

Not sure exactly were to post this but i'm having some problems with my sound.
The reason im posting here is because its most likely windows xp related.

I was just playing Battlefield 1942, when suddenly an error popped up saying i was low on memory(almost near impossible considering the system i have but it gave me that error anyway) and could not continue. Anyway the system froze up and i had to end the program. What followed was really unexpected. Somehow it messed up my sound. Now the sound on anything to do with my computer is slightly echoy and very quiet.

The sound card itself, is just a standered inbuilt one on the motherboard. Its a Realtek AC'97 If anyone intrested. Anyway, this "echo" effect is really annoying and im wondering if theres anyway to reset or maybe settings in xp for the damn thing. Cause i can't go on with this. Yes i've tired restarting. Which i would assume would fix 99% of problems like this.

Anyway ideas/help/suggestions are much needed
Edit/added: Seemed to have fixed the echo problem with the software that came with it....However it still sounds iffy...Anyw ideas on how i can reset the settings?

A:Sounds Problems

You need to install the correct drivers for your sound adapter. If you have a CD that came with your computer or sound card, the drivers are likely to be on there. If you know the exact make and model of the adapter, you can go online and download them from the manufacturer's site. To find out more information on the adapter, go into Device Manager from System in the Control Panel and expand Sound to view your hardware. There will probably be a little yellow /!\ next to the target device.

My computer:

Nvidia nForce 680i Motherboard
GeForce 9800GTX 512mb Video Card
2 GB DDR2 Memory
Intel 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo Processor
600W OCZ Power Supply

One thing to note - I see that there isn't a 8 pin connector for the CPU spot. I only have two 4 pin connectors (but only one of them works for that of the 8 pins available). So I think I need to get a different power supply from Newegg because this one is not right... Doesn't have any 8 pin connectors, only two 6 & 4 pin.

The noise/problem:

At random moments when my computer is running it makes a weird noise like sort of high pitched, not really loud, just something I notice when its running.

I've had it freeze at times and require a manual shutdown.

ALL 3 LEDS are constantly lit up on my mother board (green, blue, orange) as well the temp LCD thing always says "FF".

(I notice the Graphics Card runs default at 25%. Does that ever change with the workload, etc.? I never hear it change when I go in a game or anything. I am pretty sure that was causing the freezing so I used Riva Tuner to change the fan speed to like 70% with gaming, etc.)

I still get a freeze up once in a while. Usually when I have a few programs open after it being on for a little while.

So basically, what makes it freeze up and make me shut down? It usually makes a weird crazy sound ... Read more

I've been using vista since beta last year.. Since I've been using the retail copy of Home premium, I've noticed something odd.

First, my startup sounds have disappeared. The music doesn't play on start up, and most of the actions that had sounds, no longer do. Now, the sounds are still in the default folder, but I notice on my sound configuration page, not all options are listed.. Whats with that?
And about firefox, I've been using this browser for a few years now, never had this problem until switching to the retail of Vista. My extra menu buttons, bookmarks, and my extensions all disappear on occasion. Everytime I start to rebuild them, they get wiped again. Im not wiping them with a 3rd party program either.
Anyone else have problems with these 2?

A:Problems With Sounds, And Firefox..

Re the Firefox problem. Several of the add-in may not have been upgraded for Vista. Try opening Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). Click Start | All programs | Mozilla Firefox | Mozilla Firefox (Safe mode). In this mode all add-ins are disabled. If you experience no problems, activate one add-in and test. Repeat until you get a failure. Look for a new version of that add-in.

This computer (Vista/SP1) is having many problems. IE began running horribly slow and takes up a lot of memory. Sometimes I try to type in searches on google and the type comes across backword (and "right to left" is not checked)... lots of weirdness. I think it's possessed.

When I right-click on something like start, the screen flashes quickly and then disappears right away, so I don't even have time to click on the thing I am after (like I was trying to get up belarc to see what service pack I have in and it took me 5 minutes because I couldn't click on program fast enough. Hello Total,

You might see if downloading and merging the Directory and folder options in the tutorial below may be able to fix this for you afterwards. It restores the default settings and associations for these.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

If not, then you can do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully fix it.

Hope this helps,

I have an older compac laptop, 64 bit with Windows 7. I am guessing about 4 years old. Lately various keys on the keyboard are not functioning unless hit VERY hard. Does this simply mean I need a new keyboard or is there something else I could try?

Tonight I noticed that certain tabs on websites or certain links, or just certain keyboard keys create a bell-like sound...multiple bell tones sort of like a doorbell. Have never had this before. Anyone know what is going on?

I have an older compac laptop, 64 bit with Windows 7. << From this do you mean you Updated to Windows7 from another O/S ??Do you worh in a dusty area, or an area that may cause specks of (for example) dust, dirt, food, etc to fall on the keyboard (not unusual) ??The usual first few ideas are to use a small paint brush or mini broom to clean the keyboard.Following this you would turn the unit upside-down and Very Gently tap the area to see if any bits of "rubbish" fall out. Also just see if you can borrow, or use another mouse for the click problemIf this will not work, please post back, or check if any other answers have been posted to your problem -Thank You -

A:Windows media player sounds problems

Do you have the proper audio driver software installed?

It could also be your DVD drive. (but less likely).

I put a movie in the other day, couldn't get sound, cycled the player tray, and all of a sudden, "let there be sound". And I heard the sound, and verily it was good.

Hi everyone, I have a T480 on Windows 10 , 10.0, build: 17134 (x64), with an Intel I5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz with 8GB RAM, bought three months ago.I've been experiencing intermitent clicking and buzzing for a few weeks when playing audio (both online and directly on the laptop). No change after updating the BIOS and putting the laptop in high performance. I've run LantencyMon, which gave me the following error message: "Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. Also one or more ISR routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates. " Unfortunately, I'm not so familiar with this, so I'm not sure how to fix the problem? There shouldn't be any CPU throttling on high performance so that's probably not the problem. The main source of hard pagefaults in the diagnostic I ran is msmpeng.exe and system.I've seen a few similar posts for other models, would any of you know how to fix this? Thanks a lot!

I am running XP with service pack 3. It's a new computer, Acer Aspire One 10" screen. Anyway, I customized the theme, the appearance and the sounds like I've done on all my other computers, but it has a tendancy to revert back to the XP defaults. I've even made the changes, hit apply, shut down, restarted and the default XP settings/appearance has returned. It is the most bizarre thing. But my custom cursors settings and my walpaper and screensaver remain intact.

It's annoying, but I'm also worried its a sign of something more serious with the OS or computer...

Anyway, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A few days ago I noticed that my Windows Start and Exit Windows sounds weren't playing at all. They were playing before, so I have no idea why they would suddenly stop working. I also noticed some other strange occurrences, including Windows booting unusually fast (i figured this might be why the sound wouldn't play, ie. it didn't have time to, but now I'm not so sure), shutting down unusually slow, icons that are supposed to be in the taskbar aren't, and when the desktop first appears after startup, the right-click menu appears, even though I didn't summon it. I looked in the sounds section of the Control Panel to make sure all the paths were correct, and they were. They even played when I pressed the play button to preview them. Also, I noticed that the maximize sound doesn't play either. Every other System Sound I can think of plays fine, though. When I double-checked the Control Panel under sounds again this afternoon, I got curious and decided to change the startup sound to see if it would work then. upon pressing 'browse', however, I noticed that the directory reset to C:\WINDOWS\Media. This should not have happened, as I have been using a custom sound scheme. I still haven't tried to see if other startup sounds would work, but i will tonight, because right now I don't really feel like rebooting again. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd be glad to hear them!

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

I have an HP All-in-one printer (OfficeJet 6110) and lately when I send something to it to print, it does nothing, and I get an error message that is basically a timeout (asks if I want to retry sending). Before I say to retry, I turn off the printer and turn it back on again, and the strangest sound comes from it after it goes through the normal startup initialization/self-test sounds. It is hard to describe, but kind of sounds like a ratchet that keeps ratcheting until I kill the power again. I turn it on and off multiple times and it does it every time. I've even unplugged it from the power strip and restarted it. This usually helps, at least eventually. It will eventually power-up and not make the sound, and print properly, but this is obviously not right and I'm wondering what to do. What could be wrong?

Don't think this is related, but I have had issues with the ink cartridges in the past where it suddenly rejects the cartridge (tells me to reinsert it over and over again), with nothing having been touched or changed. I had tried store-brand inks at the time and have returned to using HP-only cartridges, and have not had a problem with the ink lately.

My Windows 7:

And Windows 8:

CPU: C2D E7500

Windows 7 No Problem
But Windows 8:
Every time I listen to music or any sounds
There are problems noise or interrupted audio
Especially when DC/CONNECT

A:Noises in Music and Sounds/ DPC LATENCY CHECKER Problems

The DPC latency checker does not work correctly in Windows 8. There is a note on their web site that they are working on a Win 8 compatible version.

Pops/crackling/noise in audio is a common complaint in Windows 7 and becoming one in Win 8 as I'm seeing more and more posts about it. Unfortunately, there is no "one fix" for the problem. It can be cause by sound drivers, video drivers, wi-fi, etc. Sound is always on a shared Interrupt (IRQ) with a higher priority device and that can also cause problems.

First suggestion. Make sure you have the correct vendor (Intel in this case) supplied sound driver. This is an old motherboard and Intel does not have Win 8 drivers, but the old Vista/Win 7 driver is valid for Win 8. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...*&DownloadType=

You can also try uninstalling the RealTek in the Device Manager then restart and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall it. Sometimes, Windows will put it on a different shared IRQ and fix or minimize problems.

Hello, I noticed first that my web history will no longer delete when I exit the internet (even though I have it set to delete on exit but it will allow me to manually do it)and when I was online it added places on my computer I visited to my web history tab. Then I noticed that my windows event sounds have changed from stringed instruments to chimes and I did not do that, sound cuts out for videos and games when it never has before. I tried to restore to an earlier point and get a message saying that all of my restore points up to today can't be found in backup. I have attached a screenshot of the message I get when I try to restore to an earlier point.

A friend told me to try malware bytes after I posted this, I downloaded it. AVG said it was several infections, I got lots of errors on my screen (could not find file)uninstalled it, and it made me reboot to get rid of it... Now maybe I'm really infected?... Lamelamelamelamelame

I have a microsoft basic optical mouse.
I also installed the new drivers (5.2) ,but it didn't solve my problem.I checked for any viruses or spyware, but my pc seems to be clean.
I also tried the mouse on another pc and it works perfect there.
I am running windows xp professional version 5.1.
Maybe someone knows what is going on with the right click.

It is kind of weird, because I didnt install any new software lately.

I have a problem in XP.

If I have a folder open or any windows explorer window for that matter.
I try to close it from the task bar, by right clicking and clicking close.

But insted of closing it 'dings' and does nothing.

Another thing I've noticed, even if the window is open and I right click, one of the bolded options is ''Restore'' which is curious since the window is already open?
I know its not a virus since I only installed the OS earlier today.
It was the reason I reinstalled for that matter.... I thought it was a bug. And decided it was easier to re-format than search for a fix.

However, I cant be bothered to reinstall again

So any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks again

Two days ago my ISP decided to change my virus protection from McAfee to Norton, I made the change. Since that time I'm unable to right click when using any file manager (windows explorer, explorer plus, ect.) I can right click on the taskbar and items on the desktop. I have tried to run SFC /scannow but nothing has changed. Anyone have an Idea as to why this would happen or how to fix it.

A:Right click problems

Personally I would not be dictated to by my ISP to run of all software Norton's - A system hogger that can slow your computer down. I would remove it by downloading Norton's Removal tool to your desktop.

Also I would recommend Avast free 5.0 similarly downloading it to your desktop.

Then after both downloads, physically disconnet form the internet, reboot, and run Norton's uninstaller, then install Avast before rebooting and re-connecting to the internet. Avast should automatically update definitions for you on reboot.

Now you may like to report back with an update as to how your system is running.

kind regards,

As with prior versions, in [Windows] Explorer's main window, you can enable hovering to select and single clicking to expand the folder (but that is a pain in the rear when working with files). Windows XP folder view nicely allowed single clicking the folder name to expand the folder. Was that removed from Windows 7? Looks like the only way to expand a folder in folder view is to either click on the small plus sign or to double click on the folder name.  Or is there a switch somewhere I am missing? Thanks.

A:Single click folder name to expand folder in folder view?

It seems that you are talking about the navigation pane (the left pane) in Windows Explorer. Is that correct?
The feature is not present since Windows Vista. When we click on the item, the sub windows will be displayed in the main pane (the right pane). In the navigate pane we can only click the plus button or double-click on the folder to open it. Arthur Xie - MSFT
